  • Who is Sam Cosmi’s Wife Blair? All About NFL Stats’s Former NCAA Athlete Partner

Sam Cosmi, the 6-foot-6, 309-pound guard for the Washington Commanders, has quietly built himself into one of the league’s best at his position. Cosmi picked 51st overall in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft, is as reliable in his defensive ability to intimidate defenders as he is in his affection for football — and maybe barbecue. Then, in 2024, with his consistent play, he got a shiny new four-year, $74 million extension ($45 million guaranteed).

But off the court, Cosmi is just as important to a two-man crew (and recently changed his moniker to ‘husband’). His wifey is a stickler about being away from the football action, but she’s no novice when it comes to sports. She’s a former college volleyball player with the brains to match, but now she’s raking it up in her sport, playing on Sam’s side with the same drive that he plays on the field. Together, they’re a power couple — one blocker-bomber, the other destroyer.

    Who is Sam Cosmi’s wife?

Blair Westerlund is no partisan bystander. She was a volleyball star for the Texas Longhorns. And her family? Also athletic. Her father, Jack Westerlund, was a Longhorns football player in the 1980s, so athletic toughness has been in her blood. And when she wasn’t crushing the court, Blair was beating her academic drum too, getting a master’s in Applied Behavior Analysis and becoming a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.

Blair’s volleyball career is match-reels. She served as the 2018 Longhorns’ captain and won accolades such as Volleyball Magazine’s Girls’ Fab 50 and PrepVolleyball’s Senior Ace. Her career was ruined by injuries, but she made a pivot like any good athlete. Instead of spike-slamming, now she’s toppling psychiatric barriers in the service of disabled children. She’s the ultimate utility player.

Sam and Blair together make for the NFL’s version of a power couple. He’s out there defending quarterbacks. She’s out here for kids and busting barriers. They are a love, respect, and desire to do the right thing — on the field or in the classroom — team. And let’s face it, if NFL teams had to take a couple’s pick, these two would take No. 1 overall.

Blair’s is a fourth-quarter comeback story of sorts. As a volleyball champion, as a coach to children, and as a creator of inclusive PE programs, she’s conquered the world head-on – just like her husband. For Sam, Blair is more than a spouse: she’s his all-time teammate, always there for him when he falls.

When did Sam Cosmi get married?

    Article continues below this ad

Sam Cosmi and Blair got married on March 27th, 2023, marking the biggest block of his life. The pair met as Texas Longhorns and became close over sports, work ethic, and (likely) nighttime Whataburger orders. They had a modest, beautiful wedding, with friends, family and plenty of love flying around them—no defensive pressure.

The couple had their first baby, Clara, in December 2023. Childrearing is a different book, and Sam and Blair are apparently up for it. For Sam, who plays Sunday protecting his QB, it just got worse. He’s guarding his young family, too.

Sam has been open about Blair, once calling her the ‘real MVP’, and he’s not wrong: she’s what holds this championship squad together. From college to living together in the NFL, the Cosmos have shown that family and team are always the winners.

Sam Cosmi, the talented offensive tackle for the Washington Football Team, is making waves in the NFL with his impressive skills on the field. But behind every successful athlete is a supportive partner, and for Cosmi, that person is his wife Blair.

Blair is not just any ordinary wife – she is a former NCAA athlete herself, having competed in track and field during her college years. With a passion for sports and a competitive spirit to match her husband’s, Blair and Sam make the perfect power couple.

While Blair may not be in the spotlight like her husband, she plays a crucial role in supporting him both on and off the field. Whether it’s cheering him on from the sidelines or providing him with emotional support during tough times, Blair is always there for Sam.

With her athletic background and love for sports, Blair understands the demands and pressures that come with being a professional athlete. She knows the sacrifices that have to be made and the dedication required to succeed in such a competitive industry.

As Sam continues to make a name for himself in the NFL, Blair will undoubtedly be by his side, cheering him on every step of the way. Together, they are a dynamic duo that proves that behind every successful man is a strong and supportive woman.

  • Who Are Sam Cosmi’s Parents? All About Romanian Natives Cornel and Rodica Who Immigrated to the States

Sam Cosmi is lowkey balling as a guard for the Washington Commanders. The dude’s got mad skills and the work ethic to match. His future in the NFL is looking fire, but what really gets him grinding is the support from his fam—his parents, Cornel and Rodica Cosmi. They’ve been the real MVPs behind his success.

If you wanna know what’s really been fueling Sam’s rise, it’s his parents’ journey from Romania to the U.S. Cornel and Rodica came here looking for a better life, and Sam’s been pushing ever since to make sure their sacrifices weren’t for nothing. The hustle they put in was everything and the foundation of why Sam’s out here balling. So, why don’t we take a look at such amazing parents! Starting with the Boss of the Cosmi household, Rodica Cosmi.

    Who is Sam Cosmi’s mom?

Rodica Cosmi is honestly a real one. She’s been there for Sam, showing him how to hustle, stay tough, and handle challenges like a pro. Moving from Romania to the U.S. isn’t easy, but Rodica made it. Just like us, Sam’s got mad respect for his mom: “She’s one of the hardest working people I know,” he said. “I think a lot of my toughness and mental fortitude comes from her.”

Rodica’s been putting in the work for Sam’s future. Sam said in an interview, “She taught me that nothing comes easy. She always told me to stay humble, no matter how much success I had.” Those words are everything, and it’s that kind of mindset that’s kept Sam grounded, no matter how high he climbs. But she’s not the only support he had. There’s his father, Cornel, as well.

    Who is Cornel Cosmi?

Cornel Cosmi is that man who makes hard work look effortless. He moved to the U.S. from Romania and went straight to work as a car mechanic to support his family. Sam has huge respect for his dad’s grind: “My dad is everything,” he said. “The way he works, the way he sacrifices for the family, it’s unbelievable. I strive every day to be half the man he is.”

The sacrifices of his father were the very foundation of Sam’s success. Sam said, “His commitment to making sure we had everything we needed—nothing else mattered to him but our well-being and success.” That’s the kind of energy that threw Sam to make it in football and in life. Another thing that surely played a major role in Cosmi’s journey is the community he grew up in.

    Where did Sam grow up?

Sam grew up in the Houston suburbs, and if you know Texas, you know football is everything to them. His fam moved there from Romania, and the football culture was at its peak. Which is exactly what Sam needed to step up his game. In Texas, he might have felt more at home while adjusting to life in the U.S. “Football was in my blood from the start,” Cosmi said. “In Texas, it’s a way of life. I wanted to be the best, and that meant grinding harder than everyone else.”

Mr. and Mrs. Cosmi kept Sam locked in on both school and sports, always pushing him to chase his dreams. Growing up in Texas with that football energy was the perfect vibe to turn Sam Cosmi into the NFL star he is today.

Sam Cosmi, the talented offensive tackle for the Washington Football Team, comes from a family with a unique and inspiring story. His parents, Cornel and Rodica Cosmi, are Romanian natives who made the courageous decision to immigrate to the United States in pursuit of a better life for themselves and their family.

Cornel and Rodica’s journey to America was not an easy one. They left behind their home country and everything they knew in search of opportunities and a brighter future. Upon arriving in the States, they faced challenges and obstacles, but their determination and hard work allowed them to overcome adversity and build a successful life for themselves and their children.

The Cosmi family’s story is a testament to the resilience, courage, and strength of immigrants who come to America seeking a better life. Cornel and Rodica’s sacrifices and dedication have undoubtedly played a significant role in shaping Sam’s character and work ethic, which have helped him succeed both on and off the football field.

As we cheer on Sam Cosmi during games and celebrate his accomplishments, it is important to remember the sacrifices and contributions of his parents, who paved the way for his success. Their journey serves as a reminder of the opportunities and possibilities that can be achieved through hard work, perseverance, and the pursuit of the American dream.

  • What is Sam Cosmi’s Ethnicity? All About NFL Star’s Roots And Heritage

Greatness isn’t given; it’s earned on the grindstone of hard work.” This encapsulates Sam Cosmi’s journey from a young rural boy dreaming big to a mighty NFL beast. Cosmi is a wall of human beings at 6’6″, 309 lbs, on the Washington Commanders’ offensive line. But he is also a man with guts, growth, and a family history built on resilience. He firmly established himself as a top-tier guard in 2024 when he put up a breakout season among the league’s top pass-blockers. But who is the guy behind the numbers?

From humble beginnings to stardom, Sam’s story is a fairytale NFL story. He was the son of a mechanic and was taught discipline, willpower, and a desire to overcome hardships. Where then did this journey go and what made Sam Cosmi the “mauler” he is today?

    Where is Sam Cosmi from?

    Article continues below this ad

Sam Cosmi’s story begins in the big-town Humble, Texas, but his roots are more far-flung than America. His parents Cornel and Rodica escaped communist Romania in the 1980s, to live better in the US. Their only assets were hope and hard work, so they moved to Texas and passed those lessons down to their children. Sam was raised in this dynasty of fortitude.

Cosmi obviously has Romanian blood, despite being born in America. His father was a Mercedes-Benz mechanic who commuted two hours one way for his family. This fueled Cosmi’s own insatiable motivation. “Watching my dad leave at 6 a.m. and come back at 8 p.m. taught me that nothing comes easy,” Sam once stated. And this is what led him to play football with unparalleled fervor.

Humble, Texas was more than just a place: it was the furnace in which Cosmi’s aspirations were baked. He started the NFL journey there, starting from backyard games to reaching high school games. And while he’s now a Washingtonian, he was raised in Texas and he’s still the same man. Cosmi’s college life was every bit as dramatic as his home life. He’d signed with the University of Houston and then went with coach Tom Herman to the University of Texas, where he wanted to play. “I couldn’t turn it down,” Sam said, and it was a decisive call. So, Cosmi redshirted his first year, and played in 34 of 35 games, protecting quarterbacks and even catching a touchdown pass against West Virginia — not your usual OT.

Sam Cosmi’s family shaped him so much. His mom, always there for him, was his biggest cheerleader, even when the road wasn’t smooth. And that family sense extended to his draft party, where a full house went wild when Washington called his name. From Humble to FedExField, Sam’s story is about perseverance.

Where did Sam Cosmi grow up?

Born on February 16, 1999, Sam grew up in Humble, not like anything special—working, raising the family, and having a few laughs. He went to Atascocita High School, where his football dreams took off. It wasn’t all roses and sunshines initially. Sam came into high school as a small lineman with barely any interest. But then something interesting happened his junior year in an Oklahoma drill. “He obliterated the defensive line,” his coach reminisced, and then college recruiters got a clue.

    Article continues below this ad

Though he was passed over as a child, Sam was different. “I didn’t have a lot of expectations,” he admitted. “I knew I had to earn everything.” And work for it, he did. He was first-team All-District and second-team All-State by his senior year. It wasn’t about having good skills, it was about doing more than everyone else (he learned that from his parents). And not only talent but also the ability to develop. Months before the NFL Draft, Sam Cosmi drove hours to California to huddle with former All-Pro tackle Joe Staley. All that extra effort was rewarded when Washington took him in the second round of the 2021 draft. Sam was no ordinary draft pick. He was an upcoming mauler.

    Article continues below this ad

In the NFL, too, Sam’s ability to do better has been his signature. Washington coach Ron Rivera was a fan of his development: Sam Cosmi never wavers from an attack. From battles with elite pass rushers like Montez Sweat or Chase Young in practice to recovering from injuries, his resiliency shows up at every snap. We jump ahead to the season 2024 and Sam Cosmi was in full force. He signed a four-year, $74 million extension and cemented himself as one of Washington’s core pieces. His PFF ratings—68.8 on the season and 74.3 on the pass-blocking end—ranked him in the top 25% of guards.

The story of Sam Cosmi isn’t done yet. His life as he lords it in the trenches is a lesson to me that greatness comes through building, not inheritance. From Humble roots to NFL star, Sam is a living example of the fact that you can get anywhere with hustle, ambition and a bit of Texas grit. I mean, The grind doesn’t stop when you make it—it just changes gears.

Sam Cosmi, the talented offensive tackle for the Washington Football Team, has been making waves in the NFL with his impressive skills on the field. But many fans are curious about his background and heritage. So, what is Sam Cosmi’s ethnicity?

Sam Cosmi was born on November 16, 1998, in Houston, Texas, to Mexican parents. His father, Jorge Cosmi, immigrated to the United States from Mexico, while his mother, Maria Cosmi, was also of Mexican descent. Sam has always been proud of his heritage and has spoken about the influence of his Mexican roots on his upbringing and his football career.

Despite facing challenges along the way, Sam Cosmi has worked hard to achieve his dreams of playing in the NFL and has become a role model for many young athletes, especially those from immigrant backgrounds. His success is a testament to his dedication, hard work, and perseverance.

In interviews, Sam Cosmi has expressed his gratitude for his family’s support and the values they instilled in him, which have helped shape him into the player and person he is today. As he continues to excel in the NFL, fans can expect to see more of Sam Cosmi’s talent on display and his pride in his Mexican heritage shining through.

In conclusion, Sam Cosmi’s ethnicity is Mexican, and he proudly embraces his roots and heritage both on and off the football field. He is a shining example of the power of determination and hard work in achieving one’s goals, no matter where you come from.

  • Pitt retires Sam Clancy’s No. 15 jersey

Five men’s basketball banners now hang from the rafters at Petersen Events Center, honoring a select few Pitt alums who have made their mark on the program over the years.

During halftime against Clemson on Saturday, the No. 15 jersey worn by Sam Clancy (1977-81), joined Don Hennon (1956-59), Billy Knight (1971-74), Charles Smith (1984-88) and Brandin Knight (1999-2003) as the only numbers Pitt has seen fit to retire.

Nowadays, Clancy, 66, is Pitt’s Varsity Letter Club director, helping oversee alumni relations and engagement among current Panthers student-athletes.

In all of his seasons at Pitt, Clancy averaged a double-double, finishing with an average of 14.4 points and 11.6 rebounds per game.

He is the only player in program history to score 1,000 points (1,671) and accumulate 1,000 rebounds (1,342).

    Clancy is Pitt’s all-time leader in rebounds, double-figure rebounding games (78) and double-doubles (170).

He ranks 16th in points scored and fourth with 170 career blocks.

During his time at Pitt, he helped the Panthers to the 1980 NIT and 1981 NCAA Tournament.

Beginning his high school career at Fifth Avenue before graduating from Brashear, Clancy won a gold medal with the U.S. at the 1979 Pan American Games under coach Bobby Knight.

After his college days, Clancy embarked on a two-sport professional career, having been selected in the 11th round of the 1982 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks (despite having not played football collegiately) and the 1981 NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns.

From 1982-93, he played in both the NFL and the USFL, including for the Pittsburgh Maulers in 1984.

Clancy also played a season of pro basketball for the Billings Volcanos of the Continental Basketball Association.

Justin Guerriero is a TribLive reporter covering the Penguins, Pirates and college sports. A Pittsburgh native, he is a Central Catholic and University of Colorado graduate. He joined the Trib in 2022 after covering the Colorado Buffaloes for Rivals and freelancing for the Denver Post. He can be reached at jguerriero@triblive.com.

The Pitt Panthers have announced that they will be retiring former basketball star Sam Clancy’s No. 15 jersey in a special ceremony this upcoming season.

Clancy, who played for Pitt from 1979-1982, was a dominant force on the court and etched his name into the program’s history books. He was a three-time All-American and still holds the record for most rebounds in a single season with 422.

His jersey retirement will honor his contributions to the Pitt basketball program and serve as a reminder of his impact on the team and the university as a whole. Fans are encouraged to come out and celebrate this momentous occasion and show their appreciation for one of the all-time greats in Pitt basketball history.

Stay tuned for more details on the ceremony and how you can be a part of this special event. #HailToPitt #SamClancy #JerseyRetirement

  • Pitt Retires Sam Clancy’s Number 15

PITTSBURGH — On Saturday afternoon, Pitt retired Sam Clancy’s No. 15 jersey at halftime of the Panthers’ basketball game against Clemson.

Check out video of the ceremony from the game below.

Pitt retired Sam Clancy's No. 15 jersey at the game against Clemson.

Pitt retired Sam Clancy’s No. 15 jersey at the game against Clemson.

Pitt first announced that it would retire Clancy’s number at a Pitt football game this past season.

Pitt Set to Retire Legendary Basketball Star’s Number

Clancy grew up in the Hill District in Pittsburgh and starred at Fifth Avenue High School in the area, leading the team to a state championship in 1976. When Fifth Avenue closed that year, Clancy played for the newly opened Brashear High School as a senior and joined their first ever graduating class.

He would then go on to play for Pitt from 1977-81. Clancy starred at the collegiate level, averaging 14.4 points and 11.6 rebounds per game, an impressive double-double. He is still the only Pitt player to score more than 1,000 points (1,671) and grab more than 1,000 rebounds in a career and his 66 career double-doubles are also the most in Pitt history. Clancy leads the program all-time with 1,362 rebounds and his 170 blocks are fourth most in Pitt history.

Clancy earned three-time All-Eastern 8 selections and also played for the U.S. team in the 1979 Pan American Games, winning a gold medal.

The Panthers succeeded as a team during Clancy’s time with the program. This includes four winning seasons, the 1981 Eastern 8 Tournament Championship and appearances in the 1980 NIT Tournament as a junior and the 1981 NCAA Tournament as a senior.

Clancy then saw himself earn two draft selections from two different sport leagues. The Phoenix Suns of the NBA drafted him in with the 16th pick in the Third Round of the 1981 Draft and Seattle Seahawks of the NFL drafted him No. 284 overall in the 11th round of the 1982 Draft, despite him never playing collegiate football.

He played one season for the Billings Volcanos in the Continental Basketball Association, where he averaged 11.5 points and 8.3 rebounds before choosing football for the rest of his career.

Clancy started on defensive end for the Seahawks from 1982-83, before joining the Pittsburgh Maulers in the new USFL in 1984. He then played one season for the Memphis Showboats before returning to the NFL with the Cleveland Browns from 1985-88 and the Indianapolis Colts from 1989-93.

Clancy finished his time in the NFL with 227 tackles, 30 sacks and seven fumble recoveries. He would serve as defensive line coach for the Barcelona Dragons in NFL Europe, winning the 1997 World Bowl. He also coached defense in different capacities for the Oakland Raiders and the New Orleans Saints.

He returned back to Pitt in 2005 and earned a bachelor’s degree in social sciences. Clancy worked as a football strength and conditioning assistant for three seasons before he chose to transition to the administrative side at the university. He is in his 15th year as Director of the Varsity Letter Club, where he works with alumni and connecting them with current student-athletes at Pitt.

The University of Pittsburgh announced today that they will be retiring former basketball star Sam Clancy’s number 15 jersey. Clancy, who played for the Panthers from 1979 to 1982, was a dominant force on the court and is considered one of the greatest players in Pitt history.

During his time at Pitt, Clancy was a two-time All-American and led the team to multiple NCAA tournament appearances. He still holds the record for most rebounds in a single game with an impressive 27.
