Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq stumble as Trump recommits to sweeping tariffs on Saturday
The US dollar (DX=F, DX-Y.NYB) is on track to secure its best week since mid-November as a looming tariff deadline pushes the greenback currency to new heights.
The US Dollar Index, which measures the dollar’s value relative to a basket of six foreign currencies — the euro, Japanese yen, British pound, Canadian dollar, Swedish krona, and Swiss franc — rose about 0.5% on Friday to rebound from its worst performance in over a year last week.
The index has gained around 8% since its September lows and is up about 5% since Election Day.
The dollar’s price action has largely been driven by two main catalysts: President Trump’s election and the subsequent Republican sweep, along with the recalibration of future Fed easing in the face of strong economic data.
But the unknown of Trump’s tariff policy has been the biggest driver in recent weeks and looks set to remain that way in the months ahead.
“In case there was any lingering doubt, investors are judging tariffs to be a dollar-positive, as we had anticipated,” Capital Economics senior markets economist James Reilly wrote in a note published on Friday.
But “for all the attention tariffs have received in recent months, they are far from priced in,” he warned.
On Friday, the White House reiterated President Trump’s plan to enact 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada as soon as Saturday, denying an earlier Reuters report that suggested Trump is weighing a tariff plan that includes a delay on implementation by a month.
According to Reilly, elevated volatility in currency markets reflect traders “appear to be bracing for something,” but also said they seem reluctant to take Trump at his word.
“That’s a key reason why we think the dollar still has a bit more upside if, as remains our working assumption for now, a 10% universal tariff and 60% levy on imports from China are imposed around Q2,” he said.
The stock market took a hit on Friday as President Trump announced plans to move forward with imposing tariffs on Chinese goods. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500, and Nasdaq all stumbled as investors reacted to the news.Trump’s decision to recommit to imposing tariffs on Saturday came after talks with Chinese officials failed to reach a resolution. The move is expected to escalate tensions between the world’s two largest economies, potentially leading to a trade war.
Investors are concerned about the impact that tariffs could have on the global economy, as they could lead to higher prices for consumers and disrupt supply chains. The uncertainty surrounding trade relations between the US and China has been a major source of volatility in the markets in recent months.
As a result of Trump’s announcement, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped by over 300 points, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq also saw significant losses. The news has left investors on edge, as they wait to see how China will respond to the US tariffs.
Overall, the stock market is facing increased uncertainty and volatility as a result of Trump’s decision to recommit to imposing tariffs on Chinese goods. Investors will be closely watching how the situation unfolds in the coming days and weeks.

#Dorian #FinneySmith #shoulder #cleared #play #Saturday #Dorian #FinneySmith #News50 ‘Saturday Night Live’ Catchphrases We Say Now
1985
“That’s the ticket”
Uttered by Jon Lovitz’s pathological liar character, Tommy Flanagan, when he’d hit upon a particularly egregious whopper, this line was also Lovitz’s ticket to surviving the notorious 1985-86 “S.N.L.” season and sticking around for four more years.
1986
“Well isn’t that special?”
Even though she’s a fountain of catchphrases, the Church Lady is recognizable without even opening her mouth: All she needs are those pursed lips set hard to one side and she’s ready to start judging you. (Isn’t that convenient?) This Dana Carvey character, the host of “Church Chat,” came along at a perfect time for religious satire, when scandal-prone televangelists and their tingling nether regions were making national news. The Church Lady shot to popularity, but there must be someone who doesn’t find her chicken-winged Superior Dance funny … now, who could it be …
1986
“Choppin’ broccoli”
In addition to the Church Lady, Dana Carvey debuted another defining character in Season 12: Derek Stevens, a washed-up British singer-songwriter who’s antsy to “bloody score.” When he meets with record executives (Phil Hartman and Sigourney Weaver) and doesn’t have a demo as promised, he improvises — performing a song technically called “The Lady I Know” but that has gone down in pop history as “Choppin’ Broccoli,” a send-up of the ubiquitous self-serious rock-pop ballads of the 1980s. Carvey repeatedly revived Stevens during his “S.N.L.” run and even performed the song with a full orchestra on “The Tonight Show” in 2014. If the sight of the cruciferous vegetable doesn’t already evoke this earworm, we promise, it will now.
1987
“We’re gonna pump you up”
Hear me now and believe me later: Hans and Franz (Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon) came from a small village in Austria to host this weightlifting show.
1989
“Party on”
With a blast of cable-access graphics and furiously strummed electric guitar, “Wayne’s World” comes to you direct from Wayne’s mom’s basement in Aurora, Ill. At the sketch’s core are two best friends, Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar (Mike Myers and Dana Carvey), separating what rules from what sucks: Aerosmith? “We’re not worthy!” Julia Roberts? “Schwing!” Their manic slacker energy and guileless enthusiasm even propelled them onto the big screen — just don’t mix them up with their spiritual cousins, Bill and Ted, because that would be bogus.
1989
“Wouldn’t be prudent”
Dana Carvey’s George H.W. Bush is by many accounts the greatest presidential impression in the history of “S.N.L.” It somehow managed to seem realistic but abstract, savage and gentle, highly specific to this patrician Republican as well as a broad cartoon of all politicians. His first efforts at Bush, who did not present nearly as many obvious targets as his son, zeroed in on his attempts to act tough, but then as he kept doing them, Carvey got playful, becoming increasingly stylized in movement and language, pruning dialogue down, speaking in catchphrases (“Not gonna do it”), repeating them over and over, until they became half-enunciated mumbles. He came off like a politician so determined to say nothing that he’s veering into silence.
1989
“Touch my monkey”
Based, Mike Myers has said, on both a German waiter he once knew in Toronto and the avant-garde musician Klaus Nomi, the severe, turtleneck-clad Dieter was a talk-show host extraordinaire — if hosting means alternately ignoring your guests and screaming at them to pet your primate.
1990
“Wrong!!!”
Dana Carvey leads “The McLaughlin Group,” where the other panelists just can’t seem to get up to speed.
1990
“Don’t look at my bum, bum looker”
Mike Myers is Simon, a little English boy having his bath. Keep your eyes on his draw-rings, you cheeky monkey.
Molly Shannon on Kicking, Stretching and Getting Physical
It was never my experience that anyone was like, “OK, let’s get a character with a catchphrase.” I personally think that if you’re manufacturing a catchphrase, trying to push it, people will smell the lack of authenticity. When it’s organic and it feels real, people are going to latch onto it. It has to start with the depth of the character, and then the catchphrase has to fit in an authentic way with that character.
With the characters I created, I was just writing from myself, and sometimes I would just write stuff that was fun to say. [In the Sally O’Malley voice]: “I like to kick, stretch and kick!” It feels musical. Then I added a physical thing with it, and that was also fun. That’s a good thing because maybe other people can have fun saying it, too.
But I’m not really thinking all that when I’m writing it. I’m just thinking, This is fun.
You get an instant feel for when [a character or phrase is catching on] because you’re living in New York City, so people will come up to you on the street right away like: “Oh my God, Mary Katherine Gallagher! She reminds me of my sister! Oh my God, my cousin!” With Sally O’Malley, people started saying: “Could you leave my friend a message? She just turned 50.” I still get that constantly. I do backyard Sally O’Malleys for friends a lot, where I’ll wish people happy birthday doing the character.
I originally did Mary Katherine Gallagher in my stage show, and she was similar then: She’s trying out for something; she hopes she gets it; she acts out a little bit, and then she behaves very badly and gets sent away. But then she ends up getting the part, and she celebrates. My good friend Debra Palermo, who I grew up with in Cleveland, used to come to all my stage shows in L.A. where I did that character. She would always see me before my show and be like, “There she is, my superstar!” So I threw “superstar” into that first sketch with Gabriel Byrne for Debbie — to make her laugh because I knew she was watching.
That’s how not thought out it was. In the moment, I felt like saying it. And then it became a thing.
But what was so cool is I was writing from within. I’m writing an exaggerated version of how I felt as a little girl — anxious, accident-prone, hopeful, nervous, excited. It’s beautiful that when you write from within, people relate to it.
And again, it’s a word, and then it’s physical: It’s “Superstaaaar!” You feel an energy. You lift your arms up into the sky — who doesn’t feel good saying that? As a performer, I do it right now while I’m talking to you. I’ll never get sick of it. It’s joyful, celebratory, fun.
I’m so glad I got the job because “S.N.L.” is the one place where you can think of an idea Monday, write it up Tuesday night, and then it’s live on-air Saturday. It’s like a comedy school where you can just get your ideas live on TV. Where else would you be able to do that? Lorne created a place where comedians get to think stuff up and then produce their own sketches, and then develop it in front of an audience at dress rehearsal. So I just think the show was set up for [minting characters with catchphrases]. “Saturday Night Live” gives those characters life. — As told to Austin Considine

Just four teams have 19 or more wins, and just six teams have two or fewer losses.
• Saturday’s game pits the top two teams in the Mountain West standings against each other, both sides sitting at 9-1. The teams will face off against in Albuquerque on Feb. 16.
• Currently 19-2, USU is off to its fourth-best start to a season in program history through at least 21 games. The only better starts were: 2008-09 (24-1), 2003-04 (25-2) and 2010-11 (22-2). Last year’s team also opened the season 19-2.

The stage is set for an epic showdown as the Utah State Aggies host the New Mexico Lobos this Saturday in a battle between the Mountain West Conference’s top teams. Both teams have been on a hot streak, with the Aggies boasting a 7-1 record and the Lobos sitting at 6-2.The Aggies, led by head coach Blake Anderson, have been dominant on both sides of the ball this season. Quarterback Logan Bonner has been lighting up the scoreboard with his arm, while running back Calvin Tyler Jr. has been a force on the ground. The defense, anchored by linebacker Justin Rice, has been stingy against opposing offenses.
On the other side, the Lobos, under head coach Danny Gonzales, have been equally impressive. The defense, led by linebacker Brandon Shook, has been causing havoc for opposing offenses.

Spurs Injury Report
Miami Heat Best NBA Prop Bet
Tyler Herro has recorded at least seven receptions in four of his last five games, an area that he seems to be focusing on in recent starts. Now, he faces a Spurs team that allows 26.3 assists per game. This is a great spot at plus-money for Herro to reach seven assists once again.
San Antonio Spurs Best NBA Prop Bet
A 12.5 rebound total is a tough too high for Victor Wembanyama, who is averaging 10.9 rebounds per game this season and has reached 13 or more rebounds just once in his last nine games. Now, he faces a Heat team that has improved in the rebounding department, grabbing 50.8% of rebounds in their last three games.
I’m going to lay the two points with the Spurs as small home favorites. They’ve been putting together some strong shooting performances lately, sporting an effective field goal percentage of 55.3% over their last three games. Their effective field goal percentage is also 1.1% better on their home court, whereas the Heat’s effective field goal percentage drops 3.6% when playing on the road.
The Heat have also had an issue turning the ball over lately, coughing it up on 17.3% of their possessions over their last three games, which is the worst mark in the NBA in that stretch.
Give me the Spurs to get the job done at home tonight.
Pick: Spurs -2 (-112)

With both teams looking to secure a win, it’s sure to be a thrilling game.
In terms of odds, the Heat are favored to win this matchup, but the Spurs have proven to be a tough opponent for any team. As for the best NBA prop bets for this game, here are a few to consider:
1. Total Points Over/Under: With both teams boasting strong defenses, the total points scored in this game may be on the lower side. Consider betting on the under for this prop bet.
2. Player Prop Bets: Keep an eye on players like Jimmy Butler of the Heat and DeMar DeRozan of the Spurs. Both players are key scorers for their respective teams and could have a big impact on the outcome of the game.
3. First Half Winner: If you’re looking for a quick bet, consider wagering on which team will be leading at halftime. This could give you an early indication of how the rest of the game will play out.
Overall, this matchup between the Heat and Spurs is sure to be a close and competitive game. Keep an eye on the odds and consider these prop bets to make the most out of this exciting NBA showdown.

NBA Picks, Predictions, Expert Bets for Saturday, February 1
We have a full slate of NBA action scheduled for tonight, with a total of 9 matchups on-tap. Here’s my NBA picks, predictions, and best bets for Saturday, February 1.
NBA Picks, Predictions for Saturday, February 1
Kings at Thunder
There’s a fascinating trend sequence in this game. OKC has the No.1 defense in the league, by a huge margin. So their totals are always compressed. But when the total is greater than 230 in Thunder games this season, the over is 6-1. But the way it’s happened is rare: the Thunder team total is 5-2 to the over, and the opponent team total is 5-2 to the under.
Finally, in the 29 games that OKC has covered the spread this season, the Thunder team total is 22-7 to the over, and the opponent team total is 22-7 to the under.
The Kings had a brief moment of hope and light after firing Mike Brown when they tore through a good stretch. But they’ve lost three of four, and with De’Aaron Fox’s trade request, team morale is at an all-time low. It’s not a good time to head to Oklahoma City.
Even with Jalen Williams out, I make this game OKC -11.
OKC -7.5, Thunder over 121.5 points, Kings under 114.5 points is +350 on DraftKings. We’re going for a beatdown by the Thunder here.
But wait, there’s more! As a separate very, very small SGP play, I’m also going to play the under. I have the Thunder projected at 121 points, and the Kings at just 104, for an under play. Add the under and we jump to +800.
SGP: Thunder -7.5 + Thunder over 121.5 points + Kings under 114.5 points (+350)
Lakers at Knicks
When the Lakers lose without Anthony Davis since the Bubble, the over is 33-30, 52 percent, nothing to write home about. But in road losses since the Bubble without Davis, the over is 23-15, and the opponent team total is 26-11-1 to the over.
I make the Knicks‘ total 122.3 vs. a line of 118.5.
The Lakers, somehow, someway, are third worst in points in the paint allowed this season. Precious Achiuwa is third among the Knicks behind Karl-Anthony Towns and Jalen Brunson in points in the paint per 36 minutes. So I’ll take Achiuwa to put up 6+ points at +100, and throw in his over 4.5 (-125) in a Same Game Parlay.
PICKS: Knicks team total over 118.5, Precious Achiuwa 6+ points (+100)
SGP: Knicks over 118.5, Achiuwa over 4.5 points, Knicks ML (+222)Suns at Blazers
The Suns are on a 3rd-in-4 back-to-back so I’m worried about shenanigans here with the lineup before tip.
Phoenix is bottom-five in scoring allowed off spot-up possessions. Now, this isn’t just catch-and-shoot, but it includes drives off those. They limit the number of catch-and-shoot threes but at the cost of drives off closeouts without real rim protection.
I’m going with Jerami Grant over 12.5 points in his return from injury tonight. Grant leads the Blazers in points off spot-ups and this is one of Portland’s final exhibitions for his trade value.
PICK: Jerami Grant over 12.5 points (-110)
