  • Why Marsai Martin can’t discuss her canceled Disney show ‘Saturdays’ without getting emotional

When Marsai Martin launched her own series on the Disney Channel and Disney + in 2023 — and when it was canceled within the same year — she learned firsthand just how challenging it can be for Black-led shows to survive.

During a recent appearance on Keke Palmer’s “Baby, This is Keke Palmer” podcast, the 20-year-old actress discussed what happened to the short-lived show “Saturdays.”

“Girl, only God knows,” the “Black-ish” alum said initially when Palmer asked her what happened to the series, which debuted on the network in March 2023 with six episodes before it was canceled.

“I think it’s because they never really know how to promote Black television or films,” Martin continued, adding, “It just kind of got overshadowed with a bunch of other projects in the lineup.”

Louisiana Republicans urge NFL to ensure ‘kid-friendly’ Super Bowl halftime show amid Kendrick Lamar performance

The show, executive produced by Martin along with Norman Vance, Jr., Nicole Dow, and Martin’s parents, Joshua and Carol Martin, followed a Black teen girl named Paris living in Chicago with her family and friends as they all just did their best to make it to Saturday nights at their favorite roller rink. The series starred Danielle Jalade in the lead role alongside Omar Gooding, Golden Brooks, Jermaine Harris, and Daria Johns.

In 15 episodes, including a crossover with “Raven’s Home,” the show “Saturdays” quickly gained a fanbase among Black viewers and received favorable early reviews. While the “Little” star admitted she handled the cancellation well personally, she became emotional when she confessed she thought about how the cancellation could have impacted the show’s young Black stars.

“I’m like, ‘OK, it is what it is,’” she said. “We know what happened. But, you know, I think that for our Black girls, our three main leads, that for this show to be like their breakthrough, in a sense, for being seen, I can never talk about it without getting emotional.

Palmer noted it’s because “we all know what it feels like to be let down.”

Author Frederick Joseph asks consumers to stop buying his books at Target

Marsai Martin, the talented young actress known for her role in the hit TV show “Black-ish,” recently opened up about her canceled Disney show “Saturdays” and why she can’t discuss it without getting emotional. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Martin shared her disappointment and frustration over the show’s cancellation, revealing that it was a project she was deeply passionate about.

The show, which was set to follow the lives of four middle school girls and their Saturday morning adventures, was a project close to Martin’s heart. She had been involved in the development of the show from the beginning and was excited to bring a diverse and empowering story to young viewers. However, despite her best efforts, the show was ultimately canceled before it even had a chance to air.

In her post, Martin expressed her sadness over the cancellation, explaining that the show’s message of friendship, girl power, and self-acceptance was one that she felt was important for young audiences to see. She also shared her frustration over the lack of support and resources given to the show, which ultimately led to its demise.

Despite her disappointment, Martin remains hopeful for the future and is grateful for the opportunity to have worked on the show. She is determined to continue advocating for diverse and inclusive storytelling in the industry and hopes to see more representation for young black girls on screen.

As fans of Martin, we can only hope that she will have the chance to bring her vision to life in the future and continue to inspire and empower audiences with her talent and passion.

    What to Know

New Mexico is 1-9 against UNLV since January of 2019 but they’ll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Saturday. Both will face off in a Mountain West battle at 3:00 p.m. ET at Thomas & Mack Center. The Lobos have been getting the ball to fall more lately as they’ve increased their point totals each of their last four games.

New Mexico is headed into Saturday’s contest after beating the impressive 161-point over/under the oddsmakers set for their last match against Fresno State. New Mexico steamrolled past Fresno State 95-67 on Monday. The Lobos have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won six matchups by 19 points or more this season.

New Mexico’s win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Donovan Dent, who almost dropped a double-double on 20 points and nine assists. That’s the most assists Dent has posted since back in November of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Mustapha Amzil, who went 6 for 8 en route to 15 points plus seven rebounds and two steals.

New Mexico smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Fresno State only pulled down seven.

Meanwhile, the point spread may have favored UNLV last Tuesday, but the final result did not. They fell just short of Wyoming by a score of 63-61. For those keeping track at home, that’s the closest loss the Rebels have suffered since December 16, 2023.

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Jaden Henley, who posted 15 points in addition to two steals. Another player making a difference was Jalen Hill, who had ten points plus five rebounds.

New Mexico pushed their record up to 16-4 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home. As for UNLV, their defeat ended a seven-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 11-8.

Saturday’s game is shaping up to be a scrappy match: New Mexico has crashing the boards this season, having averaged 40.2 rebounds per game. It’s a different story for UNLV, though, as they’ve been averaging only 32.5. Given New Mexico’s sizable advantage in that area, UNLV will need to find a way to close that gap.

Looking ahead, New Mexico is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by three points. This contest will be their eighth straight as the favorites (so far over this stretch they are 4-3 against the spread).

    Odds

New Mexico is a 3-point favorite against UNLV, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Lobos as a 2.5-point favorite.

    The over/under is 147.5 points.

    What to Know

Providence is 9-1 against Georgetown since December of 2019, and they’ll have a chance to extend that success on Saturday. Both will face off in a Big East battle at 12:30 p.m. ET at Amica Mutual Pavilion. The Friars are the slight favorite, but fans should be in for an exciting match likely to go down to the wire.

Providence will head into Friday’s matchup ready to turn things around: they couldn’t quite beat Villanova last Friday, but the two-point margin was a huge improvement compared to the 20-point defeat they were dealt last Tuesday. Providence fell just short of Villanova by a score of 75-73. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for the Friars in their matchups with the Wildcats: they’ve now lost three in a row.

Despite their defeat, Providence saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Bensley Joseph, who posted 20 points in addition to seven rebounds, was perhaps the best of all. Joseph had some trouble finding his footing against Creighton last Tuesday, so this was a step in the right direction. The team also got some help courtesy of Corey Floyd Jr., who scored 18 points.

Meanwhile, Georgetown finally caught a break after four consecutive losses. They skirted by Villanova 64-63 on Monday on a last-minute layup from Micah Peavy with but a second left in the second quarter. The win came about thanks to a strong surge starting at the 16:41 mark of the second half, when the Hoyas were facing a 42-29 deficit.

Georgetown’s victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Peavy, who went 6 for 9 from beyond the arc en route to 24 points plus two steals. Those six threes gave Peavy a new career-high. Jayden Epps was another key player, scoring 15 points.

Providence now has a losing record at 9-10. As for Georgetown, their win bumped their record up to 13-6.

Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Providence has crashing the boards this season, having averaged 39 rebounds per game. However, it’s not like Georgetown struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 37.2. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we’ll see if one team can grab an edge.

Providence strolled past Georgetown when the teams last played back in March of 2024 by a score of 74-56. Will Providence repeat their success, or does Georgetown have a better game plan this time around? We’ll find out soon enough.

    Odds

Providence is a slight 1.5-point favorite against Georgetown, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers were right in line with the betting community on this one, as the game opened as a 1.5-point spread, and stayed right there.

    The over/under is 139 points.

'Emergency' box office Day 3: Kangana Ranaut's political drama crosses the Rs. 10 crore mark on the weekend, beats ‘Game Changer,’ ‘Azaad’ and ‘Pushpa’ with Saturday’s collection

Often regarded as the ‘Queen’ of Bollywood, Kangana Ranaut on January 17 made it to the theatres with his highly awaited Hindi film ‘Emergency.’ Based on the events that unfolded during the emergency period in India in 1975, the movie was under the radar right from the word go. Kanagana’s solo directorial faced a lot of controversies from the day she announced the movie to the day she finally released it. Poll

Was the Portrayal of Key Historical Figures in Emergency Convincing?

Before the release of the movie, there were mixed reports about the box office performance of the movie. Many analysts said the movie would not be able to leave a mark on the box office, while others disagreed. To the surprise of the former group, ‘Emergency’ opened with a decent number of Rs.2.5 crore on Friday, and thereafter, it also saw a rise in the business, according to the Sacnilk report. On day 2 the movie made Rs3.6 crore business, which was a 44 per cent increase from the previous day’s collection. On its first Sunday, i.e. day 4, the movie made Rs.4.35 crore and took the overall collection to Rs.10.45 crore.
With these numbers, Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Emergency’ is leading the box office, leaving behind heavy-weight champions like ‘Game Changer.’ Starring Ram Charan, ‘Game Changer’ made an impressive opening with Rs 51 crore; however, after the first day, the business only witnessed a downhill. On Sunday the movie minted Rs. 2.50 crore. It was followed by ‘Azaad,’ featuring Rasha Thandhni and Aman Devgan. The movie made Rs. 1.85 crore. And then comes Allu Arjun’s ‘Pushpa 2,’ which after more than a month of theatrical release, made Rs. 1.18 core on Sunday.
In addition to Kangana, the cast of ‘Emergency’ features prominent actors like Anupam Kher as Jayaprakash Narayan, Shreyas Talpade as Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw. Further, there is Adhir Bhat as Feroze Gandhi and Vishak Nair as Sanjay Gandhi. Each actor has successfully portrayed these significant political figures, enhancing the film’s historical relevance.

Kangana Ranaut’s much-anticipated political drama, ‘Emergency,’ has been making waves at the box office since its release. The film, which is based on the true events of the Indian Emergency in 1975, has managed to cross the Rs. 10 crore mark on the weekend, beating out other recent releases like ‘Game Changer,’ ‘Azaad,’ and ‘Pushpa.’

  • NFL Playoff Bracket 2025: Picture, Schedule After Saturday’s Divisional Round | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors

    B/R

The Kansas City Chiefs are playing in the AFC Championship Game for a seventh straight season.

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs defeated the Houston Texans 23-14 on Saturday night to keep Kansas City’s hopes of a championship three-peat alive.

Later Saturday evening, the Washington Commanders and Detroit Lions will play with a trip to the NFC Championship Game on the line.

Here’s a look at the state of the playoff picture and remaining schedule as the Divisional Round continues Sunday.

    2025 NFL Playoff Schedule

    Divisional Round

NFC: (6) Washington Commanders at (1) Detroit Lions, 8 p.m. ET

NFC: (4) Los Angeles Rams at (2) Philadelphia Eagles, 3 p.m. ET

AFC: (3) Baltimore Ravens at (2) Buffalo Bills, 6:30 p.m. ET

    Conference Championships

AFC at Kansas City Chiefs, 6:30 p.m. ET

    Super Bowl LIX

AFC Champion vs. NFC Champion, 6:30 p.m. ET

The Chiefs have played in every AFC Championship Game since the 2018 season, and that streak won’t end this winter.

Mahomes and the Chiefs won four of those conference championship games on the team’s way to three championships. Now the two-time reigning champs will wait to see which opponent they will be playing for another shot at the Super Bowl.

The Commanders and Lions will compete for a spot in the NFC Championship Game under the dome at Detroit’s Ford Field, but Sunday’s divisional round contests are likely to be shaped by weather.

The Rams and Eagles could be playing in snow in Philadelphia, while the Ravens and Bills are slated to compete in sub-freezing temperatures in Buffalo.

How these teams respond to the cold will determine whether players head home Monday or continue their bid for a trip to New Orleans in February.

Whichever four teams advance will have until next Sunday to prepare for their conference championship.

The Chiefs entered the playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the AFC, so the conference championship game will take place at Arrowhead Stadium regardless of whether the Ravens or Bills advance to the next round.

Home advantage in the NFC Championship Game will similarly go to the highest seed that makes it through this weekend. The top-ranked Lions could lock up another game at Ford Field if they are able to defeat the Commanders on Saturday night.

  • What to know about Saturday’s game against Loyola Chicago

Dayton (11-6, 1-3) has rekindled memories of the Brian Gregory years with three straight losses in Atlantic 10 Conference play. Three times during Gregory’s tenure as coach, Dayton squandered strong non-conference performances with sub-par play in league games, settling for NIT bids in 2008, 2010 and 2011.

Dayton faced a similar situation in coach Archie Miller’s third season. The Flyers started 1-5 in A-10 play that season but then won nine of their last 10 games to secure a NCAA tournament berth. That’s the season everyone points to any time Dayton struggles in A-10 play, but anyone watching the current Flyers will find it hard to imagine a repeat of that turnaround.

Dayton hit rock bottom in 2014 with a 60-57 loss to Saint Joseph’s at UD Arena on Jan. 29. Langston Galloway made a bank-shot 3-pointer to beat the Flyers with 1.8 seconds to play.

“Nobody’s boo-hooing,” Miller said after the game. “Nobody’s crying. We’ve just got to continue to work to get better. We’ll climb our way out of it.”

Continuing to work also was a theme of current Dayton coach Anthony Grant’s press conference Wednesday after a 67-59 loss to George Mason.

“There are 14 games left,” Grant said. “Each game has a life of its own. We’ve got to make sure that we don’t get caught up in the noise or get caught up in necessarily the disappointment of the results.”

The noise is the criticism being directed at the Flyers. There were scattered boos at the game Saturday but nothing overwhelming. It’s a different story online, where fans are venting their frustrations about a sweet season that has turned sour.

Grant doesn’t have a problem tuning out the noise and said his players are used to it in some ways.

“Obviously, it goes both ways,” Grant said. “You can’t always believe the praise, and you can’t always believe the criticism. It depends on where it’s coming from. I think we’re in a day and age where young people are kind of in some ways immune to it because they live in that world, so to speak.”

Dayton doesn’t have to wait long for a chance to break the three-game skid. It plays Loyola Chicago (11-6, 2-2) at 4 p.m. Saturday at UD Arena. Here are 10 things to know about the game:

    1. Series history: Dayton leads the series 35-16. Dayton has won two of the three games since Loyola joined the A-10 in the 2022-23 season.

Last season, Dayton lost 77-72 at Loyola. Dayton committed a season-high 22 turnovers. Loyola scored 20 points off those turnovers.

In 2023, Dayton beat Loyola 85-81 in overtime at UD Arena and then won 65-49 at Loyola. Those were the first two meetings between the programs since 1993. The first game took place in the 1928-29 season.

    2. Losing streak: Dayton will try to avoid its first four-game losing streak in A-10 play since January 2014 when a team that would reach the Elite Eight that March lost to Richmond, Virginia Commonwealth, Rhode Island and Saint Joseph’s.

Dayton also has not lost two straight A-10 games at home — with no road games in between — since 2012 when it lost to Rhode Island and Duquesne in a five-day stretch.

    3. State of the program: Loyola Chicago improved from 10-21 overall and 4-14 in the A-10 in its first season to 23-10 and 15-3 last season. It shared the regular-season title with Richmond in 2024.

After reaching the NCAA tournament three times in its last five seasons in the Missouri Valley Conference, it has not made the tournament the last two seasons. Coach Drew Valentine is 69-45 in his fourth season. His team was picked to finish fifth this season in the A-10 preseason poll.

    4. Standings update: Dayton sits alone in 14th place as one of only two teams that hasn’t won at least two games. Fordham (8-10, 0-5) is the only team without an A-10 victory.

Loyola Chicago is one of five teams tied for sixth place with a 2-2 mark. George Mason (4-1) sits alone in first place with a half-game lead over Virginia Commonwealth, Saint Louis and Duquesne (all 3-1).

    5. Season summary: Loyola started the season 8-0 but beat only one team ranked in the top 150 of the NCAA Evaluation Tool in that stretch, No. 119 Princeton. It then lost four of its last five non-conference games.

Loyola opened A-10 play with an 84-65 loss at home to Virginia Commonwealth. It then won 79-68 at La Salle and lost 93-57 at Saint Joseph’s. In its last game Wednesday, it beat Rhode Island 81-77 in Chicago.

“The guys made a decision tonight to do whatever it takes to win,” Valentine said in his postgame press conference. “I have to give them credit. A lot of guys stepped up when our usual suspects couldn’t get hot.”

    6. Roster losses: Three of Loyola’s top four scorers played their final seasons of college basketball last season: Philip Alston (12.6 points per game); Braden Norris (9.2); and Dame Adelekun (9.1).

Loyola also lost one key player earlier this season. Justin Moore, who averaged 7.7 points and a team-best 5.3 assists in the first nine games, suffered a season-ending knee injury in December.

    7. Top returners: Desmond Watson, a 6-foot-5 senior guard, led Loyola in scoring last season (12.6 points per game) and leads the team again this season (12.2). He played his first two seasons at Davidson. He scored 24 points against Dayton last season.

    • Sheldon Edwards, a 6-4, fifth-year guard, averaged 6.0 points last season and ranks second on the team in scoring this season (12.1).

    • Jayden Dawson, a 6-4 junior guard, has increased his scoring average from 7.9 to 12.0 this season.

    8. Top newcomer: Francis Nwaokorie, a 6-7 senior forward, averages 6.7 points and leads the team in rebounding (5.9). He played the last three seasons at UC San Diego.

    9. Strengths and weaknesses: Loyola has shot 36.9% from 3-point range in A-10 play. That’s the fifth-best mark in the A-10. Dayton ranks ninth (32.1).

    • A-10 opponents have an effective field-goal percentage of 56.4 against Loyola. That’s the worst mark in the conference. Dayton ranks 11th (56.4).

    10. Odds & Ends: KenPom.com gives Dayton an 84% chance of winning and predicts a 78-67 score. Dayton ranks 58th in the Pomeroy ratings. Loyola is No. 146.

    • Dayton ranks 64th in the NCAA Evaluation Tool. It is the second highest-ranked A-10 team behind No. 59 VCU. No. 159 Loyola is the 12th highest-ranked A-10 team.

This is a Quad 3 game for Dayton and a Quad 1 game for Loyola.

    Dayton is 2-3 in Quad 1 games, 1-1 in Quad 2, 3-2 in Quad 3 and 4-0 in Quad 4. Loyola is 0-0 in Quad 1, 1-3 in Quad 2, 2-3 in Quad 3 and 7-0 in Quad 4.

    What to Know

We’ve got another exciting Southern matchup on schedule as the Samford Bulldogs and the ETSU Buccaneers are set to tip at 6:00 p.m. ET on Saturday at Pete Hanna Center. The Bulldogs will be looking to keep their 27-game home win streak dating back to last season alive.

Samford will face ETSU after failing to hit the over/under the oddsmakers set for them on Wednesday which, to be fair, was an imposing 165 points. Samford dodged a bullet and finished off Mercer 75-74.

Meanwhile, ETSU didn’t have quite enough to beat Furman on Wednesday and fell 73-70. The Buccaneers have struggled against the Paladins recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive lost matchup.

ETSU struggled to work together and finished the game with only five assists. That’s the fewest assists they’ve posted since back in February of 2024.

Samford has been performing incredibly well recently as they’ve won 11 of their last 12 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 15-3 record this season. As for ETSU, their defeat dropped their record down to 10-8.

Keep an eye on the arc in Saturday’s game: Samford has made nailing deep shots look easy this year this season, having averaged 11.6 threes per game. However, it’s not like ETSU struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 9. Given these competing strengths, it’ll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.

Looking ahead, Samford is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 5.5 points. This contest will be their seventh straight as the favorites (so far over this stretch they are 3-3 against the spread).

    Odds

Samford is a solid 5.5-point favorite against ETSU, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers were right in line with the betting community on this one, as the game opened as a 5.5-point spread, and stayed right there.

    The over/under is 155 points.

  • 2024 NFL divisional round betting – Saturday’s odds, analysis, picks and trends

The NFL divisional round starts with a bang, as the No. 1 seeds in both the AFC and NFC will be in action Saturday.

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs will begin their pursuit of a third straight Super Bowl championship against C.J. Stroud and the Houston Texans to get the day underway.

The Detroit Lions, fresh off a bye after defeating the Minnesota Vikings in Week 18 to win the NFC North and clinch the conference’s top seed, host rookie sensation Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders.

We break down both games and offer lines, props, picks, trends and more to help you prepare for any betting opportunities.

Odds current as of publish time, courtesy of ESPN BET

The NFL divisional round gets going Saturday with the two-time defending champion Chiefs (15-2, 7-10 ATS) hosting the Texans (11-7, 8-10 ATS after covering in the wild-card round) at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

The AFC top-seeded Chiefs had a bye last week, while the Texans laid waste to the Los Angeles Chargers in the wild-card round. These teams have met twice previously in the playoffs, with the Chiefs winning both matchups.

Kansas City has been involved in several close calls this season, playing in 10 games decided by seven points or less, winning each of them. The Chiefs are 7-0 outright but 0-7 ATS when laying at least six points this season. They opened as 7.5-point favorites for Saturday’s matchup and now are 8-point favorites.

The Texans, who won the AFC South for a second consecutive season with quarterback C.J. Stroud at the helm, intercepted Justin Herbert four times in the wild-card round on the way to a convincing 32-12 victory.

The Texans are looking for back-to-back playoff wins for the first time, while the Chiefs begin their quest to become the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls.

Saturday’s action gets going at 4:30 p.m. ET on ESPN/ABC/ESPN+.

How Tyler Fulghum is betting Texans-Chiefs

Tyler Fulghum breaks down why he likes adding the Chiefs to his teasers for the NFL playoffs and why he is leaning to the under.

The Chiefs play close games and win, but the games are typically competitive, defensive affairs. Only four of the Chiefs’ 15 wins this season were by more than eight points. The combined record of the losing teams in those lopsided contests is 24-44. The Chiefs have not covered a spread this large all season; they are 7-0 outright but 0-7 against the spread when laying at least six points this season, per ESPN Research. They are also coming off a multiweek layoff, with a bye in the wild-card round after sitting their starters in Week 18.

The Texans looked as sharp as they’ve looked all season against the Chargers last Saturday. The Chiefs beat the Texans by eight points when they met in Week 16 and should be favored to win, but the spread for me is too high for a Chiefs team that seems to love winning on the last possession of almost every game.

    • Kansas City is seeking its eighth straight playoff win, which would be third-longest streak in NFL history behind the 2001-05 New England Patriots (10) and 1961-67 Green Bay Packers (9).

    • The Chiefs are a win away from a seventh straight conference championship appearance (would be the second-longest streak since the 1970 merger, trailing only the 2011-18 Chiefs, who went to eight straight).

    • Patrick Mahomes is seeking his 16th playoff win as starting QB, which would tie Joe Montana for second most in NFL history, trailing Tom Brady with 35.

    • Mahomes is 6-0 in the divisional round (already the most wins without a loss by a starting QB in any playoff round in NFL history).

    • Mahomes is 4-1 against the Texans, including the playoffs. In those games, he has averaged over 280 pass yards per game and has thrown 14 TDs to just one interception.

    • The Chiefs are 2-0 all time vs. the Texans in playoffs (won 2015 wild-card matchup 30-0 and 2019 divisional round game 51-31 after trailing 24-0 in the second quarter.

    • The Texans are 6-7 all time in the playoffs and have never won consecutive playoff games (0-5 in the divisional round). They are the only franchise that has never made a conference championship since the round was created in 1970.

    • The Chiefs opened as 7.5-point favorites (currently 8) but have not covered a spread this large all season. They are 7-0 outright but 0-7 against the spread when laying at least six points this season. That is the longest such streak of winning but not covering as a 6-point favorite in the Super Bowl era, just ahead of the 2020 Chiefs and 2006-09 Miami Dolphins (six each).

    • The Chiefs are 15-2 this season but are just 7-10 against the spread. The only other playoff team with a losing record against the spread is their opponent, the Texans, who are 8-10 ATS after covering in the wild-card round.

    • The Chiefs’ eight victories this season without covering the spread are tied for the most in a single season in the Super Bowl Era.

Saturday’s second divisional round game features an NFC matchup between a Lions team currently favored to win the Super Bowl (at +275) versus a Commanders team (30-1) that went from 4-13 and a last-place finish in the NFC East to 12-5 and advancing to the divisional round in Year 1 of the Dan Quinn-Jayden Daniels era.

Last season, the Lions came up one game short of the Super Bowl, falling 34-31 to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game. Meanwhile, the Commanders ended their 2023 season with eight straight losses.

    How things can change.

The Commanders (13-5, 12-6 ATS) finished this campaign with five straight wins to close out the regular season and are coming off a wild-card win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That victory over the Buccaneers was Washington’s sixth win this season in which the game-winning score came in the final 10 seconds of the fourth quarter or in overtime.

Detroit (15-2, 12-5 ATS) lost two games all season (to the Buccaneers and Buffalo Bills) by a combined 10 points on the way to a second straight NFC North title. The Lions boast a prolific offense that led the NFL in scoring and outscored opponents by a league-high 222 points in the regular season. They are the biggest favorites of the weekend, laying 9.5 points against the Commanders.

Kickoff from Ford Field in Detroit is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on FOX.

How Fulghum is backing the Commanders in divisional round vs. Lions

Tyler Fulghum explains why he is taking the Commanders to cover the spread in their divisional round matchup vs. the Lions.

Spread: Lions -9.5 (Opened Lions -8.5)
Money line: Lions -600, Commanders +400
    Over/Under: 55.5 (Opened 53.5)

    First-half spread: Lions -6.5 (-105), Ravens +6.5 (-115)
    Lions total points: 32.5 (Over -120/Under -110)
    Commanders total points: 22.5 (Over -120/Under -110)

Matchup predictor (by ESPN analytics): Lions 73% chance to win (by 9)

    Player props

    Passing

Jared Goff total passing yards: 274.5 (Over -105/Under -125)
Goff total passing TDs: 2.5 (Over +145/Under -190)
Jayden Daniels total passing yards: 224.5 (Over -140/Under +110)
Daniels total passing TDs: 1.5 (Over +105/Under -132)

    Rushing

Jahmyr Gibbs total rushing yards: 79.5 (Over -135/Under +105)

Daniels total rushing yards: 49.5 (Over -145/Under +115)
Austin Ekeler total rushing yards: 24.5 (Over +105/Under -135)

    Receiving

Amon-Ra St. Brown total receiving yards: 79.5 (Over -105/Under -125)
Terry McLaurin total receiving yards: 69.5 (Over -110/Under -120)
Jameson Williams total receiving yards: 59.5 (Over +110/Under -140)
Sam LaPorta total receiving yards: 49.5 (Over -115/Under -115)
Olamide Zaccheaus total receiving yards: 34.5 (Over +100/Under -130)
Dyami Brown total receiving yards: 29.5 (Over -115/Under -115)
Zach Ertz total receiving yards: 29.5 (Over -125/Under -105)

    Pamela Maldonado’s pick: Commanders +9.5

The Commanders displayed both grit and precision in their thrilling 23-20 win over the Buccaneers, with rookie QB Jayden Daniels orchestrating a poised game-winning drive. The Commanders have become masters of the nail-biter this season, notching six victories when tied or trailing in the final moments. Daniels’ rapid development and Washington’s uncanny ability to deliver under pressure solidify the Commanders’ status as a dangerous underdog. Facing a powerhouse Lions squad, the Commanders’ momentum and knack for clutch performances makes them a compelling pick to cover the spread. With their late-game magic, they could make things interesting once again.

    Betting trends and more

    Courtesy of ESPN Research

    • Jayden Daniels‘ 13 wins this season (including playoffs) are tied for the second most by a rookie QB in NFL history, trailing only the 14 victories by Ben Roethlisberger in 2004.

    • The Commanders are looking to win multiple playoff games in a season for the first time since 1991, when they had three wins en route to their last Super Bowl win.

    • The Lions have outscored opponent by 222 points this season, the largest margin in the NFL this season.

    • These teams have met three times in the postseason (Washington is 3-0, with all three wins coming by at least 14 points); Washington went on to win the Super Bowl in two of the three playoffs where the teams met.

    • The Commanders finished last season tied for the second-worst record in the NFL. With a win Saturday against the Lions, they would become the fifth team since the 1970 merger to reach a conference championship after finishing the previous season ranking in the bottom two of the league in record.

    • The Commanders-Lions over/under currently sits at 55.5, which would be the highest in any playoff game since Super Bowl LV (2020) between the Buccaneers and Chiefs (56).
