Duke coach Jon Scheyer to miss Saturday’s game at SMU due to illness
Duke head coach Jon Scheyer will miss Saturday’s road game at SMU due to an illness, the program announced. Associate head coach Chris Carrawell will serve as the acting head coach.
Scheyer, 37, is expected back for Duke’s home game vs. Pittsburgh on Tuesday.
This is the first game Scheyer has missed since becoming head coach in April 2022 and only the third game he’s missed in over 15 seasons at Duke.
Scheyer didn’t miss a single game when he played for the Blue Devils from 2006-2010, and in 12 seasons on Duke’s bench, he has missed only two games — both due to appendicitis in February 2020. Prior to Saturday, he played or coached in 543 out of 545 possible games with the program.
Scheyer has led No. 4 Duke to an 11-2 record so far this season. The Blue Devils are one of three teams — along with Auburn and Marquette — with a top-15 adjusted offensive and defensive efficiency ranking, per KenPom.
What Scheyer’s absence means for Duke
For Scheyer — Duke’s de facto iron man, even dating back to his playing days — to miss a game, he has to be seriously unwell. That’s especially so given the context of Saturday’s contest: Duke’s first-ever conference game against SMU, which has the ACC’s highest-scoring offense.
The most important thing here, obviously, is that Scheyer is OK. In that regard, it sounds like his absence on Saturday is due to a one-off sickness, rather than anything that could linger. For a Duke team with legitimate national championship aspirations, that’s the only news that really matters. Scheyer has built arguably the best team of his three-season tenure — largely behind one of the nation’s best defenses and 18-year-old phenom Cooper Flagg — and the Blue Devils cannot afford to be without him for long.
On a separate note, it is interesting but perhaps not surprising that Carrawell — who was a Mike Krzyzewski assistant alongside Scheyer — will serve as acting head coach, rather than fellow associate head coach Jai Lucas, who coordinates Duke’s defense. Carrawell is the only coach on Scheyer’s staff who has been around since the Krzyzewski era, and he has a close personal relationship with Scheyer to boot. But Lucas, 36, is considered a rising star in the coaching world and should soon be receiving offers to run his own program. It would’ve been interesting to see Lucas step into that role for one game before he becomes a head coach, but Carrawell’s familiarity with the program and longstanding position make him the natural choice.

Unfortunately, Duke fans, it looks like Coach Jon Scheyer will be sitting out Saturday’s game against SMU due to illness. The team announced that Scheyer is under the weather and will not be able to make the trip with the team. Assistant coach Nolan Smith will step in to lead the team in his absence. We wish Coach Scheyer a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the sidelines soon. In the meantime, let’s show our support for the team as they take on SMU without their head coach. Go Blue Devils! #DukeBasketball #JonScheyer #GetWellSoon

Saturday’s Primeira Liga predictions including Benfica vs. Braga
Sports Mole provides score predictions and previews for all of today’s Primeira Liga fixtures, including Benfica vs. Braga.

Having endured a rough end to 2024, Moreirense and AVS will both be hopeful of improved fortunes in the new year as they kick off 2025 with a meeting at Parque de Jogos Comendador Joaquim de Almeida Freitas on Saturday.
This weekend’s Primeira Liga clash will be the maiden meeting between the sides, and both of them will be hopeful of landing the first blow in the history of this fixture to help kickstart their respective campaigns. We say: Moreirense 2-1 AVS
Given their solid record on home turf, Moreirense are the favourites to come out on top, and the onus will be on them to take the fight to AVS.
We are backing the hosts to just about do enough to come away with maximum points at the end of the 90 minutes.

Benfica and Braga are in action for the first time in the new year when they go head to head at the Estadio da Luz in round 17 of the Primeira Liga on Saturday.
Having suffered defeats in their respective last outings of 2024, both sides will head into the weekend looking to bounce back, with As Aguias eyeing a fifth consecutive victory over the visitors since April 2023.
We say: Benfica 2-1 Braga
Looking at recent meetings between Benfica and Braga, we anticipate an action-packed contest at the Estadio da Luz as both sides look to begin the new year on a winning note. As Aguias have been perfect on home turf this season, and while we expect Braga to put up a fight, we are backing Lage’s men to come away with all three points.

Boavista and Arouca open the new year with a bottom-of-the-table clash when they go head to head in round 17 of the Primeira Liga at the Estadio do Bessa on Saturday.
Both sides head into the weekend knowing victory here could serve as a springboard for a strong run of form to start the second half of the season as they look to surge from the doldrums.
We say: Boavista 1-1 Arouca
While Boavista and Arouca have struggled to get going so far, victory here could kickstart an upturn in form as they aim for a strong second half of the campaign. However, both sides are evenly matched on paper and we predict they will cancel out each other’s efforts at the Estadio do Bessa.

Saturday’s Primeira Liga Predictions: Benfica vs. BragaThis Saturday, Benfica will face off against Braga in what promises to be an exciting match in the Primeira Liga. Both teams are in good form and will be looking to secure three points to continue their climb up the league table.
Benfica, currently in 4th place, will be hoping to capitalize on their home advantage and secure a win against Braga, who are just one spot above them in 3rd place. With players like Darwin Nunez and Rafa Silva leading the attack, Benfica will be looking to break down Braga’s defense and come away with a victory.
On the other hand, Braga will be looking to maintain their position in the top three and secure a win against Benfica. With talented players like Ricardo Horta and Abel Ruiz, Braga will be a tough opponent for Benfica to beat.
Overall, this match promises to be a close and competitive one, with both teams having the quality to come away with a win. However, I predict that Benfica will come out on top with a narrow victory against Braga in what should be an exciting encounter. Stay tuned for the final score and match highlights!

The Eastern Conference-leading Washington Capitals are clicking on all cylinders, and their high-powered offense is poised to prevail over a New York Rangers team still struggling to find its footing.

The Washington Capitals are very happy to have their captain Alex Ovechkin back in the lineup again.
Ovechkin has played in their last four games and the Russian superstar has picked up right where he left off ahead of Saturday’s matinee against the New York Rangers.

Rangers vs Capitals prediction
My best bet
Capitals to win in regulation (-105 at FanDuel)My analysis
The Washington Capitals have been one of the best teams in the entire NHL, entering Saturday boasting a record of 25-10-3.
The Capitals have been strong in almost every facet of the game. They score goals, play strong defense, and they have gotten timely saves. Washington is the second-highest-scoring team in the NHL, averaging 3.63 goals per game, and Alex Ovechkin & Co. are generating the fourth-most high-danger chances per game at even strength (11.84).
On the flip side, the New York Rangers don’t defend well by any means, allowing the second-most high-danger chances against per 60 at 5-on-5 (12.96).
Most signs point toward the Capitals starting netminder Logan Thompson, who has been spectacular in goal this season. Thompson has earned a record of 15-2-2 with a .918 SV% and a 2.30 GAA, including a +15.3 goals saved above expected.
Washington has been one of the best home-ice teams in the league this season, sporting a record of 12-4-3 in its own barn. With one of the worst defensive teams in the league going up against one of the best offensive units, the Caps are the pick.
Rangers vs Capitals same-game parlay (SGP)
The Rangers are averaging less than three goals per game, and their power play is only converting at a 17.8% clip.
Dylan Strome is generating 1.78 shots on goal per game and has hit this number in two of his last four contests. You have to think he will get more opportunities to shoot against a Rangers team that allows the third-most shots on goal per game. Strome is in the midst of a breakout season with 41 points, and I like him to keep it rolling against New York.

#Rangers #Capitals #Prediction #Picks #Odds #Saturdays #NHL #GameWhat to know about Saturday’s game against George Washington
Protecting the home court and limiting losses on the road in conference play is the key to topping the standings in the A-10. The Dayton Flyers accomplished one of those goals last season, finishing 9-0 at UD Arena in conference games, but lost four times in nine tries on the road.
Dayton’s first A-10 road test of the 2024-25 season comes at noon Saturday against George Washington (11-3) at the Charles E. Smith Center in Washington, D.C. in the second A-10 game of the season. It will be the first true road game of the season for Dayton (11-3). The Flyers have played 10 home games and four games on neutral courts.
“It’s conference play, so we understand every game we have to expect to get our opponents’ best,” Dayton coach Anthony Grant said Tuesday after a 74-60 victory against La Salle, “so we have to be prepared to bring our best. We understand that it’s a different environment, and so the energy will be different for us. It comes down to having a mature team, a team that has good leadership and a team that understands we’ve got to do the hard stuff all the way through, whether it’s at home or on the road.”
Here are 10 things to know about the matchup:
1. Series history: Dayton leads the series 23-18. UD won 83-61 last season at UD Arena.
Two years ago in Dayton’s last visit to George Washington, it lost 76-69. No one from George Washington who played in that game remains with the team. Malachi Smith is the only Dayton player remaining from that game.
Prior to the 2023 game, Dayton had won six straight games in the series and three straight at the Smith Center since an 87-81 loss in the final game of the 2017 regular season.
2. Tough place to play: Dayton is 6-14 at the Smith Center since 1996. George Washington is 8-0 at home this season. It has won 18 straight non-conference home games. Last season, though, the Revolutionaries were 3-6 at home in A-10 games.
George Washington ranks 13th out of 15 teams in the A-10 in average attendance (1,599). Two years ago, it drew a crowd of 2,380 for Dayton.
“These games are kind of tough just because we have to pick up our energy and our intensity,” Smith said. “It’s probably not going to be a big crowd, like we’re used to playing in front of, but this is what we’ve got to do to get the A-10 championship.”
Explore» RELATED: Dayton continues to win despite cold outside shooting 3. State of the program: George Washington, which was picked to finish 13th in the A-10 preseason poll, is trying to end a streak of seven straight non-winning seasons in coach Chris Caputo’s third season. It finished 16-16 two years ago and 15-17 last season. The program last reached the NCAA tournament in 2014.
4. Disappointing start: In its A-10 opener Tuesday, George Washington trailed Richmond 32-21 in the first minute of the second half. It then outscored Richmond 31-7 in a 10-minute stretch to build a 52-39 lead.
Richmond (6-8) responded with its own comeback and outscored George Washington 9-0 in the last 90 seconds to win 66-61 in Richmond.
5. Schedule strength: George Washington’s non-conference strength of schedule ranked last in the country out of 364 teams, according to KenPom.com. It beat two teams ranked in the top 200 of the NCAA Evaluation Tool: No. 130 Illinois State; and No. 182 Hampton. It lost 83-71 to No. 108 Kansas State, the top-ranked opponent on its non-conference schedule. Its worst loss was to No. 255 American.

6. Transfer portal loss: Maximus Edwards, a 6-foot-5 guard, transferred to Duquesne after averaging 11.5 points in two seasons at George Washington. He’s averaging 6.1 points this season.
7. Top returner: Darren Buchanan, a 6-foot-7 sophomore forward, leads the team in scoring (15.1) after ranking second last season (15.6). He scored 13 points against Dayton last season.
8. Top transfers: Gerald Drumgoole, a 6-5 sixth-year guard, ranks second on the team in scoring (13.8). He played last season at Delaware. Earlier in his career, he spent two seasons at Pittsburgh and then two at Albany. He made 7 of 13 3-pointers against Richmond and scored 27 points.
• Rafael Castro, a 6-10 junior forward, ranks third in scoring (10.1) and first in rebounding (9.0). He played limited minutes the last two seasons at Providence. Castro had Dayton in his final three but committed to Providence in September 2020.
9. Strengths and weaknesses: George Washington ranks second in the A-10 in scoring (78.5 points per game). Dayton is fifth (77.6).
George Washington ranks 11th in the A-10 in 3-point shooting percentage (32.5). It made 10 of 32 3s (31.2%) against Richmond. Dayton ranks fourth in the A-10 (35.2) but has shot under 30% in four straight games.
10. Odds & Ends: KenPom.com gives Dayton a 78% chance of winning and predicts a 78-69 score. Dayton ranks 30th in the Pomeroy ratings. George Washington is No. 138.
• Dayton ranks 44th in the NET. It is the highest-ranked A-10 team. No. 150 George Washington is the 10th highest-ranked A-10 team.

Undermanned Bulls hoping to get right by Saturday’s game against Bucks
ATLANTA — Bulls guard Josh Giddey had a good on-the-court workout Thursday that involved sprinting and cutting — a major hurdle in his recovery from an injured right ankle. He could be ready to return Saturday against the Bucks after missing four straight games.
“I wouldn’t say it’s a long shot, but a lot is going to depend on how he responds off [Thursday’s] workout and then probably get another one in [Friday],” coach Billy Donovan said. “That will probably be a pretty good tell on if he’ll be available on Saturday.”
The Bulls could use him. After starting the season with almost too many guards, they faced the Hawks on Thursday night without Giddey, Ayo Dosunmu and Lonzo Ball. Ball missed the last game because of an illness and still wasn’t fully recovered, so the Bulls left him in Chicago. Donovan sounded confident he’d be available against the Bucks. Dosunmu has been dealing with a sore right Achilles tendon and will have it looked at Friday.
“It’s kind of lingered a little bit, gotten sorer and sorer,” Donovan said. “Some of it may be his minutes — I don’t know. He is uncomfortable with it right now in terms of planting, pushing off, springing, jumping.”
It’s going around
The Bulls have dealt with several players feeling under the weather the last month. The latest was rookie forward Matas Buzelis, who made the trip to Atlanta but was kept away from the rest of the team and didn’t play against the Hawks.
The Chicago Bulls are feeling the pressure as they head into Saturday’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks with a short-handed roster. With key players like Zach LaVine and Alex Caruso out due to injury, the Bulls will need to dig deep and rely on their depth to secure a much-needed win.Despite the challenges they face, the Bulls are not backing down. Head coach Billy Donovan is confident in his team’s ability to overcome adversity and come out on top against the Bucks. The players are determined to make a statement and show that they are a force to be reckoned with, even in the face of setbacks.
As they prepare for Saturday’s game, the Bulls are focusing on tightening up their defense and executing on offense. They know that they will need to bring their A-game if they want to compete with the powerhouse Bucks.
Fans are eagerly anticipating the matchup, hoping to see the Bulls rise to the occasion and prove that they are a force to be reckoned with in the Eastern Conference. With their backs against the wall, the Bulls are ready to fight for a much-needed victory and show that they are a team to be taken seriously. Let’s go Bulls! #BullsNation #RunWithUs

LaMelo Ball Questionable For Saturday’s Game – NBA News
LaMelo Ball Questionable For Saturday’s Game
36 seconds agoCharlotte Hornets point guard LaMelo Ball (ankle, wrist) has been listed as questionable for Saturday’s clash with Oklahoma City. We might be robbed of a fun matchup between Ball and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander because the Hornets leader is dealing with ankle and wrist soreness. Vasilije Micic should log another start if Ball isn’t ready to play. Micic has filled in for Ball regularly in the first unit if he’s been unavailable, averaging 12.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 6.5 assists this season as a starter.

LaMelo Ball Questionable For Saturday’s Game – NBA NewsThe Charlotte Hornets may be without their star rookie, LaMelo Ball, for their upcoming game on Saturday. According to reports, Ball is listed as questionable due to a lingering ankle injury.
Ball, who has been a standout player for the Hornets this season, has been dealing with ankle issues for the past few weeks. Despite his injury, he has continued to play through the pain and put up impressive numbers on the court.
If Ball is unable to suit up for Saturday’s game, it will be a significant blow to the Hornets as they look to secure a playoff spot in the competitive Eastern Conference. Fans will be eagerly awaiting updates on Ball’s status leading up to the game.
Stay tuned for more updates on LaMelo Ball’s injury and whether he will be able to play in Saturday’s matchup.

#LaMelo #Ball #Questionable #Saturdays #Game #NBA #NewsBengals WR Tee Higgins (knee/ankle) active for Saturday’s game vs. Broncos
The Bengals are 6-4 when Higgins has played this season, and 1-4 when he hasn’t. He previously missed the first two games of the season with a hamstring injury and a three-game stretch in Weeks 8-10 with a quad injury.
Despite missing time this season, Higgins has had better production in his 10 games this season than he did in 12 games in 2023, when he dealt with recurring hamstring injuries. Higgins has caught 58 passes for 727 yards (12.5 avg.) and seven touchdowns. He has four TD receptions in his past five games.
The 7-8 Bengals are in desperation mode as far as the playoffs go, currently holding less than a 10% chance to make it. The 9-6 Broncos currently sit in the final wild-card playoff spot heading into Saturday’s game.
In his one career game versus Denver, Higgins caught two passes (on three targets) for 23 yards back in Week 15 of the 2021 season.
The Cincinnati Bengals have announced that wide receiver Tee Higgins will be active for Saturday’s game against the Denver Broncos. Higgins had been dealing with knee and ankle injuries but has recovered in time to suit up for the matchup. His presence on the field will be a boost for the Bengals’ offense as they look to secure a crucial win. What to Know
The Syracuse Orange and the Bucknell Bison will round out the year against one another at 2:00 p.m. ET on Saturday at at JMA Wireless Dome. Both of these teams will be looking for a pick-me-up after considerable defeats in their previous games.
The experts predicted Syracuse would be headed in after a victory, but Maryland made sure that didn’t happen. Syracuse was dealt a punishing 87-60 loss at the hands of Maryland on Saturday. The match marked the Orange’s lowest-scoring game so far this season.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Donnie Freeman, who went 6 for 10 en route to 15 points plus seven rebounds. He had some trouble finding his footing against Georgetown two weeks ago, so this was a step in the right direction. The team also got some help courtesy of Elijah Moore, who went 7 for 11 en route to 16 points plus two steals.
Meanwhile, Bucknell’s recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Saturday after their sixth straight defeat. They found themselves the reluctant recipients of an 86-65 punch to the gut against Gonzaga. The Bison were surely aware of their disadvantage in the point spread, but the foreknowledge did nothing to prevent the result.
Syracuse has been struggling recently as they’ve lost four of their last five matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-6 record this season. As for Bucknell, their loss dropped their record down to 4-8.
Going forward, Syracuse is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 13.5 points. Currently 8-4 against the spread, Bucknell has been a solid investment this season; on the other hand, Syracuse is only 4-7 ATS.
Everything came up roses for Syracuse against Bucknell when the teams last played back in November of 2019, as the squad secured a 97-46 win. In that contest, Syracuse amassed a halftime lead of 51-26, an impressive feat they’ll look to repeat on Saturday.
Odds
Syracuse is a big 13.5-point favorite against Bucknell, according to the latest college basketball odds.
The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Orange as a 12.5-point favorite.
The over/under is 147.5 points.
