Greensburg, Hempfield areas see changes in fast food, retail business scene

As fast food chains and other popular retail locations close in the Greensburg-Hempfield area, the region’s business scene will see some changes in the new year.

    Dick’s Sporting Goods

While Westmoreland Mall prepares to welcome a Dick’s Sporting Goods House of Sport, one of the chain’s stores along Route 30 will close, according to a local real estate agency.

The Dick’s Sporting Goods store in Hempfield Pointe Plaza — about 6 ½ miles west of the Westmoreland Mall — will close in early 2025, said Kevin D. Langholz, senior director of retail brokerage at Hanna Commercial Real Estate.

The store could close sometime between January and March as it offloads its inventory, Langholz said. The sporting goods chain did not respond to multiple requests for comment on the closure.

Hanna Commercial Real Estate is looking for a new tenant to fill the 30,000-square-foot space. Rent costs have not been determined, Langholz said.

Dick’s will open a House of Sport location in the Westmoreland Mall’s former Sears store, according to a real estate prospectus from Howard Hanna Real Estate Services of Pittsburgh. The sporting goods business has not made an announcement about the House of Sport.

The Westmoreland Mall location would be the second House of Sport in the Pittsburgh region, as a store opened in the Ross Park Mall in the spring. House of Sport stores include spaces for athletes to scale a rock-climbing wall and practice baseball, softball, lacrosse, field hockey, soccer and golf.

Dick’s has 17 House of Sport locations. It plans to open about 15 in 2025, but the locations have not been specified.

The Dick’s store located directly behind the Westmoreland Mall will remain open for the time being, Langholz said, but the long-term fate of the store is unclear.

    Big Lots

After filing for bankruptcy in September, discount furniture and home decor chain Big Lots reached a deal last week that could save hundreds of its locations.

Langholz is unsure if the chain’s Hempfield location will be one of them.

“We are actively monitoring the Big Lots information given our current tenancy at Greengate East,” said Langholz, referring to the Route 30 shopping plaza.

Big Lots said Friday it will be sold to Gordon Brothers Retail Partners, which will then transfer Big Lots’ stores and distribution centers to other retailers. Variety Wholesalers Inc. plans to acquire and operate between 200 and 400 Big Lots stores and up to two distribution centers.

Despite recent closures in the area, Langholz said Greensburg and Hempfield are conducive to business success. The Greengate shopping plaza along Route 30 has no vacant spaces, he said.

“I think that the Route 30 Greensburg corridor is a very strong regional node of the Pittsburgh MSA with very little turnover in recent years,” he said.

“What you’re seeing today is the result of expansion by some retailers such as Dick’s and retractions such as Big Lots. Demand for junior box retail space of 20,000 square feet and above remains very strong and active.”

    Wendy’s, TGI Fridays

The South Greensburg Wendy’s and Hempfield TGI Fridays have shuttered in recent months.

The Wendy’s restaurant, located on South Main Street, was one of 140 low-performing locations slated for closure in late October to allow for new openings, a spokesperson confirmed via email.

Wendy’s will open between 250 and 300 restaurants in 2025, including one in Mars, Butler County. There are more than 60 locations in the Pittsburgh area, the spokesperson said.

The former TGI Fridays location in the Hempfield Square shopping plaza is available for lease, according to Pittsburgh-based Legacy Realty Partners’ website. The 5,300-square-foot restaurant is located on a plot of more than three acres, surrounded by a Lowe’s, Target, Giant Eagle, Texas Roadhouse, PetSmart and Firestone.

TGI Fridays did not respond to multiple requests for comment on the closure. The Dallas-based fast food company filed for bankruptcy protection in November, closing 36 locations in January 2024. It said in November it operates 39 restaurants across the country.

The Greensburg and Hempfield areas are experiencing some major shifts in the fast food and retail business scene. With new businesses popping up and old favorites closing their doors, residents are seeing significant changes in their local dining and shopping options.

One notable change is the arrival of several new fast food chains in the area. From trendy burger joints to popular coffee shops, there are now more options than ever for grabbing a quick bite to eat. These newcomers are giving residents fresh choices and injecting some excitement into the local dining scene.

On the flip side, some long-time favorites have recently shuttered their doors, leaving loyal customers disappointed. Whether due to changing consumer preferences or economic challenges, these closures are a reminder of the ever-evolving nature of the business world.

In addition to changes in the fast food scene, the retail landscape in Greensburg and Hempfield is also shifting. New stores and boutiques are opening up, offering residents a wider variety of shopping options. From clothing and accessories to home goods and specialty items, there’s something for everyone in these expanding retail spaces.

Overall, the changes in the fast food and retail business scene in Greensburg and Hempfield are a reflection of the dynamic nature of the local economy. While some businesses may come and go, residents can look forward to a diverse and vibrant array of dining and shopping options in their community.

The Split’s Nicola Walker on filming ’embarrassing’ champagne scene

The Split star Nicola Walker has recalled filming Hannah’s “embarrassing” champagne scene in the new special.

Abi Morgan’s popular drama returned to screens this weekend with one of two new episodes titled The Split: Barcelona, with the conclusion following tomorrow night (December 30).

The festive episodes see the Defoe sisters jet off to sunny Spain for an important wedding, and among the guests is “mysterious” lawyer Archie Moore (Toby Stephens) who is teased as a potential love interest for Hannah.

In an exclusive interview with Digital Spy, the Unforgotten actor remembered filming the pair’s reintroduction after arriving in Barcelona, which sees Hannah spill champagne all down herself.

“It was absolutely scripted by Abi [Morgan],” she laughed, adding of the champagne: “It’s actually technically incredibly hard to time on camera and I was thinking crikey how do they do the volcano eruptions and then it explodes.”

“I think it was done on the third or fourth take it happened,” she continued. “It’s funny when you want a bottle of champagne to explode, sometimes it’s quite obstinate and doesn’t want to.”

Walker hailed the scene as “a great moment of them meeting” which Hannah would rather forget in a hurry, explaining: “It’s just that awful, awful, crippling embarrassment when it’s the last person you want to see across your balcony.”

The Split: Barcelona follows two years on from the season 3 finale which saw Hannah officially divorce from long-term husband Nathan Stern (Stephen Mangan).

Walker believes the new special shines a unique light on second-time love and the difficulties and fears of dipping your toes back into the dating pool again.

“I think what is great about these two episodes is these two grown up people being incredibly vulnerable,” she told us. “Hannah being incredibly vulnerable, to speak about how she feels, which I don’t think I’ve seen very often, if ever.

“She’s a woman at a certain point in her life saying this is absolutely terrifying and I’m afraid. We don’t often present that in primetime TV dramas.”

The Split: Barcelona premiered on BBC One on December 29 and 30 at 9pm, and iPlayer on 29 December.

In a recent interview, Nicola Walker, star of the hit TV series The Split, opened up about filming a particularly “embarrassing” scene involving champagne. The scene in question sees her character, Hannah Stern, attempting to open a bottle of champagne in a rather ungraceful manner.

Walker admitted that she felt a bit self-conscious during the filming of the scene, as she had never actually opened a bottle of champagne before. She joked that she was worried about accidentally hitting someone in the face with the cork or spilling the champagne everywhere.

Despite her initial nerves, Walker managed to pull off the scene flawlessly, much to the amusement of her co-stars and the crew. She explained that the moment ended up being more comedic than she had anticipated, and she was surprised by how well it was received by viewers.

Overall, Walker’s candid confession about filming the “embarrassing” champagne scene serves as a reminder that even seasoned actors can face challenges on set. It’s a testament to her talent and professionalism that she was able to take a potentially awkward moment and turn it into a memorable and entertaining scene for fans of The Split.

  • The one television scene that stunned Meryl Streep

The one television scene that stunned Meryl Streep

In 2019, Meryl Streep seemingly grew weary of being one of the greatest actors in cinema history and decided she wanted to try her hand at being the best actor on television, too. She signed up to star in one of HBO’s most prestigious shows – a black comedy drama starring one of the most astonishing female casts ever assembled. Amazingly, though, on her first day on the show’s set, Streep witnessed something she’d never experienced before, and it both stunned and traumatised her in equal measure.

At a Vanity Fair panel conversation, Streep revealed that she got involved in the show when she received a call from her agent telling her, “Nicole wanted to ask you something”. The “Nicole” in question was, of course, Nicole Kidman, and when the Australian A-lister asked Streep if she ever saw herself working in television, she was intrigued. When Streep found out that Kidman wanted her to join the second season of the hit show Big Little Lies, though, she was extremely excited. After all, she was as big a fan of the first season as anyone else and was ecstatic that another season was in development.

When Streep heard that Kidman wanted her to play a character named Mary Louise, though, she knew it was meant to be. Neither Kidman nor Reese Witherspoon – her co-star on the show and one of the producing team – had any idea that “Mary Louise” is actually Streep’s legal name. Author Liane Moriarty did, though, and she envisioned Streep as the character in her novella that Big Little Lies season two is based on. By giving her Streep’s real name, she thought she could stack the deck in her favour for any potential casting down the line.

To everyone’s surprise, though, Kidman didn’t need to sell the role to Streep, and Moriarty didn’t need to use the “Mary Louise” lure. Streep essentially said yes on the spot without even reading the script, declaring, “It was the greatest thing on television, it really was. There isn’t a woman in this room who wouldn’t sign up.”

Fast forward to her first day on set, though, and Streep quickly discovered that Big Little Lies really was a showcase for the best actors in the game. Day one involved shooting an incredibly emotional scene with Kidman, playing her distrusting daughter-in-law, which required Kidman to go to a highly visceral place early in the shoot.

At the AFI Life Achievement Awards in 2024, Streep presented the trophy to Kidman and gushed about witnessing her prodigious acting ability in this scene. She revealed, “That’s the time when I really came within breathing distance of the formidable gifts Nicole has,” and added, “I haven’t recovered from that first day. I’ve never seen anything like that in my life.”

Streep was stunned by Kidman finding the requisite well of emotion within her at such an early stage and her ability to do multiple takes of the scene that were every bit as harrowing as the first. Streep exclaimed, “For me, it was traumatising because I thought, ‘This woman is a Valkyrie. How is she able to sustain that?’ Never letting up, never letting down.”

Interestingly, though, the first episode of the second season also included a scene in which Streep got to display her own volcanic eruption of emotion when Mary Louise let out a guttural scream at the dinner table. This time, the situation was reversed, with Kidman being stunned at Streep’s performance, which she described as “completely bone-chilling”.

It was during her guest appearance on the hit HBO series “Big Little Lies” that Streep delivered a tour de force performance that left audiences and critics alike in awe. In a pivotal scene, Streep’s character, Mary Louise Wright, confronts her daughter-in-law, Celeste (played by Nicole Kidman), with a chilling mix of vulnerability and manipulation. The raw emotion and intensity that Streep brought to the scene was nothing short of breathtaking, showcasing her unparalleled talent and ability to captivate viewers with every word and gesture.

Streep’s performance in this scene not only solidified her status as one of the greatest actors of our time but also served as a reminder of the power of television to showcase incredible talent in unexpected ways. It was a moment that reminded us all why Meryl Streep continues to be a force to be reckoned with in the world of entertainment.

  • ‘Babygirl’ director says that scene involving a glass of milk actually happened to her

‘Babygirl’ director says that scene involving a glass of milk actually happened to her

Sometimes, the best on-screen stories are ones derived from real life – even if it involves a romantic glass of… milk.

Yes, milk. It’s what Harris Dickinson’s character in the new erotic thriller “Babygirl” makes Nicole Kidman’s character drink at a bar amid their spicy romance, an experience the film’s director Halina Reijn said happened to her in real life.

In the scene, Samuel (Dickinson), who is Romy’s (Kidman) significantly younger intern and her lover, orders Romy a glass of milk from across the bar. When she drinks it, Samuel says “good girl” to her as he leaves the bar.

“The milk is, of course, an archetype,” Reijn told IndieWire in an interview published Saturday. “We’ve seen it in other movies. It is a great symbol of (the) animalistic sides of ourselves. It happened to me.”

Reijn went on to describe her own encounter. She said it happened to her in Belgium years ago when she’d gone to a bar by herself and ran into a “young Belgian actor,” who she did not name but said was famous and “at least 15 years younger than I.”

“He ordered me a glass of milk. I thought it was an incredible, hot thing to do, and so courageous, and so I wanted to reward him by drinking the whole thing, and I did,” she said.

While Reijn admitted that she was “a little nauseated” from drinking the milk, she “did think that was one of the most arousing moments of my life” while she was writing the film’s script.

She added that the mystery actor did not say “girl good” to her as Samuel tells Romy in the film.

“I wish he did,” Reijn said. “He just walked out.”

“Babygirl” was released on Christmas Day and follows Romy, a high-powered CEO who has a steamy affair with her much younger intern Samuel. Kidman, Dickinson, Antonio Banderas and Esther Rose McGregor star in the film.

    Cheers… we guess?

In a recent interview, director of the hit film “Babygirl” revealed that a pivotal scene involving a glass of milk actually happened to her in real life. The scene in question shows the main character, played by rising star Anna Rodriguez, accidentally spilling a glass of milk on her love interest during a tense moment.

Director Sofia Ramirez explained that the scene was inspired by a personal experience she had as a teenager. “I remember being so nervous on a first date that I ended up knocking over a glass of milk all over my crush,” Ramirez said. “It was embarrassing at the time, but looking back, it was a funny and endearing moment that I wanted to capture in the film.”

The scene has become a fan favorite, with many viewers praising its authenticity and relatability. “Babygirl” has been hailed as a refreshing take on the coming-of-age genre, and Ramirez’s attention to detail and personal touch has been cited as a key factor in its success.

Fans of the film can now watch the scene with a newfound appreciation, knowing that it was based on a real-life mishap. Ramirez’s willingness to share her personal stories and experiences adds an extra layer of depth to the film, making it even more memorable for audiences.

  • Death Explained, Season 3 Plans, Credits Scene

Death Explained, Season 3 Plans, Credits Scene

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains major spoilers from “Squid Game” Season 2 finale, now streaming on Netflix.

Game over — for now. “Squid Game” Season 2 concluded its seventh and final episode with the brutal murder of Gi-hun’s (Lee Jung-jae) best friend Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan) right before his eyes. Jung-bae is shot dead by Squid Game supervisor The Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) after Gi-hun leads an uprising of the players in the current game.

While the death on its own is shocking and gutting and horrifying, it’s made all the more gruesome for the viewer than Gi-hun because, unlike our hero, the audience knows The Front Man’s true identity: he’s In-ho, a previous winner of the Squid Game who now works as the head guard.

In-ho has spent this game posing as Player 001 (going by the name Young-il) and growing close to Gi-hun and Jung-bae to gain their trust and pretend to be part of their cause and rebellion, only to don his Front Man mask again in the end and kill Jung-bae to punish Gi-hun.

With one more season to go, “Squid Game” creator Hwang Dong-hyuk broke down the Season 2 finale for Variety — including the mid-credits scene that teases an unfamiliar version of the Squid Game featuring new male and female versions of the giant, lethal laser-eyed “Red Light, Green Light” dolls — and what he has planned for Season 3 and the series finale.

“Squid Game” Season 2 ends on a massive cliffhanger with The Front Man (In-ho/Young-il, unbeknownst to Gi-hun) killing Jung-bae right in front of Gi-hun, leaving Gi-hun to scream in horror as the pink guards hold him down and force him to watch his friend bleed out. Why did you decide to end the season here?

When I first wrote the story of Seasons 2 and 3 it was one long story arc. And I was originally planning to write this story across a span of about eight to nine episodes, but once I finished the story, it came to over 10 episodes, which I thought was too long to contain in a single season. And so I wanted to have an adequate point where I could give closure as a second season and then move on with the third. And when you look at Gi-hun’s story, all of his attempts that he puts in to stop the game: the first one being getting these mercenaries and trying to plant a tracking device, that goes to fail; the second attempt of trying to persuade people to vote so that they can leave the game, that goes to fail as well; and then the third and last attempt of bringing people together and causing the rebellion, it also all goes to fail.

So all of his failures lead to this heavy, heavy crisis of having to lose his very best friend, Jung-bae, at the hands of The Front Man. And when you think about Gi-hun’s journey, I thought that that was an adequate moment to put a stop and give him a little bit of closure along that long story arc. And then from that moment on, in the third season, having that sense of huge guilt and sense of failure weighing heavily on him — how is Gi-hun going to carry on his mission? That’s the story that’ll further unfold.

    No Ju-han/Netflix

When can we expect Season 3 to premiere and what can you tease about the storyline for the series’ final episodes?

At this point, anything I might say is going to be a spoiler, so I want to be cautious. But what I can say is, after Season 2 launches, I believe we will be announcing the launch date for Season 3 soon. I probably expect that to launch around summer or fall next year. But as for the storyline of the third season, Gi-hun having lost everything, including his best friend, and all of his attempts going to failure, it’s now, what is he going to be like? What state is Gi-hun going to be in? And what will he choose to do? Will he continue on with the mission? Is he going to give up or persist? And so you’re going to meet our character Gi-hun at a very critical crossroads as we begin the third season. Gi-hun will not be the man he was in Season 2.

With Gi-hun and a good portion of other players having rebelled against The Front Man and pink guards in Season 2, will the show’s format change in Season 3? How will they be able to go back to the regularly scheduled Squid Game now that so many of the players have disrupted the system?

If you saw the hidden clip after the ending credits roll after the last episode of Season 2 — if you watch that clip, it’s going to give you a slight hint as to where Season 3 might take you. I think that’s all I can say, for now.

Which of the Season 2 games did you find the most satisfying to shoot and why?

I’d say the pentathlon. Not only was it the most challenging to shoot, but I think after we had finished filming it, I enjoyed watching it myself the most. And especially so because within one round of games, you get five smaller games. And as in Season 1, I wanted to showcase these actual children’s games that Korean people grew up playing, especially the ones that I grew up playing myself. With the way I got to show the world five different games in a single round, I would say the pentathlon was probably the most satisfying to shoot.

What do you want to tease about the remainder of the series?

With each episode it’s going to get better. With each season it’s going to get better and a more expanded story, more intense story, and definitely more entertaining. So just be sure to watch it until the very end!
