The Washoe County School Board of Trustees on Tuesday discussed the “Phones Away and Learn Today” district-wide pilot program which is officially underway, including the winners of the campaign’s PSA contest.
During the update, Trustee Coleen Westlake asked the presenters to address emergency phone usage for parents who feel anxious about the new program. She said she had seen several emails from parents concerned they wouldn’t be able to contact their students in an emergency.
WCSD Police Chief Tracy Moore. Photo: Courtesy WCSD School Police Chief Tracy Moore said students will not be denied communication with parents when it is safe to do so, and he understands the desire to be in contact with students during an emergency. He said even he uses an app to communicate with his children in such situations.
He said school police, administrators and the communications department work closely to send information to parents “as quickly as we can and as informative as we can during an emergency.”
He said this way, parents receive information from law enforcement and on-site administrators who have accurate updates for families. “When it’s safe to do so, we want to send that message to the parents in our community,” Moore said.
As part of the pilot program, students were asked to submit public service announcements (PSAs) in the form of posters, videos or similar artwork.
The district received several contributions, and five projects were selected.
- Isabella Buscunan Fernandez of Incline Middle School was selected for her video submission.
- Gavin Cates, Jack Egan, Arek Engelke, Sonia Gustavson and Gio Whittey of AACT were selected for their video submission.
- Madeline Fisher of Wooster High School was selected for her bilingual informational poster submission.
- Sophia Anderson of Spanish Springs High School was selected for her graphic poster submission.
- Liepa Etchegoyhen, Colin Pilcher, Bebe Slater and Sophia Valdez of Reno High School were selected for their video submission.
Each can be viewed here.
All winners received a $25 gift card to Scheels, and their PSAs have already been circulating on-site at schools, as well as on district websites and social media. Smith commended district leadership and Superintendent Joe Ernst for seeking student input on the PSAs.
“When we’re doing it together, we’re going to make progress,” Superintendent Joe Ernst said.
We are thrilled to announce the winners of our school district’s ‘Phones Away and Learn Today’ PSA contest! After receiving numerous creative and impactful submissions from students across the district, our panel of judges had the difficult task of selecting the top entries. Each PSA focused on the importance of minimizing distractions and staying focused on learning by putting away phones and other electronic devices during school hours.
Without further ado, the winners are:
1st Place: Amelia Smith, 10th grade
2nd Place: David Nguyen, 11th grade
3rd Place: Maya Patel, 9th gradeCongratulations to all the winners! Your hard work and dedication to spreading this important message is truly commendable.
We would also like to extend our gratitude to all the students who participated in the contest. Your creativity and passion for promoting a positive learning environment did not go unnoticed.
Thank you to everyone who supported this initiative and helped make it a success. Together, we can continue to encourage a culture of focus and productivity in our schools.
Stay tuned for updates on how these winning PSAs will be shared throughout the district to inspire others to put their phones away and learn today!

STARTS RIGHT NOW. A BLAST OF ARCTIC AIR MAKING ITS WAY ACROSS NEW MEXICO, AND IT’S BRINGING SOME MUCH NEEDED SNOW TO SOME AREAS. THESE VIDEOS FROM ANGEL FIRE AND RED RIVER TAKEN TODAY WE ARE SEEING DANGEROUSLY COLD TEMPS WITH IMPACT CONDITIONS. METEOROLOGIST BYRON MORTON IS HERE WITH WHAT WE NEED TO KNOW. YEAH, DOUG AND SHELLEY. AND FROM RIGHT NOW ALL THE WAY TO ABOUT 11:00 TOMORROW MORNING. THAT’S WHEN WE’RE IN THIS IMPACT MODE FOR THE COLDEST TEMPERATURES THAT WE’VE EXPERIENCED HERE IN ALBUQUERQUE SINCE 2021, AND IT’S GOING TO BE SO COLD THAT SOME OF THOSE TEMPERATURES WITH WIND CHILLS WILL BE BELOW ZERO OR SUBZERO. THAT’S THE KIND OF COLD THAT CAN GIVE YOU FROSTBITE AND HYPOTHERMIA IN A MATTER OF MINUTES. SO YOU DEFINITELY WANT TO TAKE PRECAUTIONS. BUNDLE UP IN LAYERS, LIMIT YOUR TIME OUTSIDE. I THINK THE COLDEST TEMPERATURES WILL BE TOMORROW MORNING BETWEEN 5 AND 9 A.M., WHEN A LOT OF US ARE HEADING OFF TO WORK AND SCHOOL EARLY. SO PROTECT YOURSELF, PROTECT THE PIPES AND OF COURSE, THE PETS AS WELL. COLD ADVISORIES. COLD WARNINGS FOR ALL OF NEW MEXICO INTO SOUTHWEST COLORADO UNTIL TOMORROW MORNING. RIGHT NOW DOESN’T LOOK BAD OUT THERE, BUT WE’VE DIPPED TO 30 IN ALBUQUERQUE. THAT WIND CHILL IS DOWN TO 19 DEGREES. IT CONTINUES TO DROP WITH THE NORTH BREEZE AT 15MPH. YOU SEE THE STRONGEST WINDS RIGHT NOW. CLOVIS AT 26MPH, 13 MILE PER HOUR WIND IN RIO RUIDOSO. WIND CHILL IN CLOVIS, 11 BELOW ZERO FEELS LIKE 18 BELOW ZERO IN LAS VEGAS RIGHT NOW. 16 BELOW IN RATON. THOSE ARE THE FEELS LIKE TEMPERATURES AS ALL THIS ARCTIC AIR IS SURGING FROM THE NORTHERN PLAINS OF THE U.S. INTO NEW MEXICO RIGHT NOW, THE TEMPERATURES THESE ARE ACTUAL TEMPERATURES. HARD TO BELIEVE TWO BELOW ZERO FOR RATON AND LAS VEGAS. THE CURRENT ACTUAL TEMPERATURES TEN IN SANTA ROSA AND ALSO FOR MORIARTY. BIG CHANGE COMPARED TO YESTERDAY WITH THAT ARCTIC AIR WORKING IN THOSE SNOW SHOWERS ACROSS EASTERN NEW MEXICO ARE SUBSIDING. STILL, SOME LINGERING SNOW SHOWERS ACROSS THE NORTHERN MOUNTAINS. TRACKING THE WIND CHILL FORECAST AS WE GO THROUGH TONIGHT. WATCH THOSE NUMBERS COME DOWN IN A BIG WAY. MUCH OF NEW MEXICO FEELING BELOW ZERO. WIND CHILLS AS WE GO INTO THE OVERNIGHT HOURS INTO TOMORROW MORNING. SO AGAIN, PROTECT YOURSELF AND DRESS IN LAYERS. LOTS OF LAYERS. TRY TO LIMIT YOUR TIME OUTDOORS AND OF COURSE, BRING THE PETS

McDowell High School: No active shooting
No shooter, victims found after possible shooting reported at McDowell High School, officials say
GO. WE HAVE A LOOK AT TODAY’S TOP NEWS STORIES, YOUR TRAFFIC AND YOUR WEATHER ALL BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT THE DOOR. THAT’S RIGHT. WE’RE GOING TO START WITH COLD WEATHER, SAFETY PRECAUTIONS AND WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR PIPES THIS WEEK ARE ISABELLE. MARK JOINS US LIVE WITH MORE. HEY, ERIN AND PEYTON, EXPERTS SAY THAT THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO TO KEEP THOSE PIPES PROTECTED IS TO SLOWLY DRIP, DRIP THAT WATER SO THAT IT PREVENTS THE WATER FROM FREEZING. BUT THERE’S A FEW OTHER THINGS THAT YOU CAN DO AS WELL. YOU CAN OPEN UP YOUR CABINET DOORS UNDER YOUR SINKS TO LET THE WARM AIR CIRCULATE. DISCONNECT HOSE PIPES FROM ALL OUTDOOR FAUCETS, CLOSED GARAGE DOORS TO PROTECT WATER SUPPLY AND COVER CRAWLSPACE VENTS IN WINTER TO HOLD THAT WARMTH IN THE CRAWLSPACE, YOU’LL ALSO WANT TO KNOW HOW TO SHUT OFF YOUR WATER. IF PIPES BURST, YOU’LL NEED TO ACT FAST. SO EXPERTS SAY THE BEST THING THAT YOU CAN DO FOR THIS IS TO USE A METER KEY TO TURN OFF YOUR WATER METER, WHICH WILL THEN SHUT OFF YOUR MAIN WATER LINE. BUT FOR NOW, REPORTING LIVE IN GREENVILLE ISABELLE MARAK WYFF NEWS FOUR. WE’RE FOLLOWING BREAKING NEWS IN GREENVILLE. DEPUTIES ARE SEARCHING FOR 11 YEAR OLD AMEL VICTOIRE O’DONNELL. WE’RE TOLD SHE WAS LAST SEEN AROUND 630 LAST NIGHT NEAR THE MAGNOLIA PLACE APARTMENTS ON RUTHERFORD ROAD. DEPUTIES SAY SHE WAS LAST SEEN WEARING BLACK PAJAMA PANTS AND A BLACK COAT. IF YOU SEE HER, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY. AND TODAY IS PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP’S FIRST FULL DAY IN OFFICE. BUT HE GOT TO WORK RIGHT AFTER YESTERDAY’S INAUGURATION. HE’S ALREADY SIGNED DOZENS OF EXECUTIVE ORDERS AND PARDONED HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE, NEARLY ALL CASES RELATED TO THE JANUARY 6TH CAPITOL RIOT ARE OVER NOW. THAT’S AFTER TRUMP PARDONED MORE THAN 1200 PEOPLE CONVICTED OF RELATED CRIMES. HE’S ALSO DIRECTING THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT TO DROP ABOUT 300 PENDING CASES, FREEING 14 DEFENDANTS CHARGED WITH THE MOST SERIOUS SEDITION OFFENSES, A RETURN TO THE PRESIDENCY. CONFIDENT AND OPTIMISTIC THAT WE ARE AT THE START OF A THRILLING NEW ERA OF NATIONAL SUCCESS, HE’S DECLARING A NATIONAL EMERGENCY AT THE SOUTHERN BORDER AND EFFECTIVELY SHUTTING DOWN ASYLUM, SEEKING THERE. HE’S TRYING TO DELAY A TIKTOK BAN AND LIMIT THE CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO CITIZENSHIP AT BIRTH. TRUMP ALSO IS REMOVING THE U.S. FROM THE PARIS CLIMATE AGREEMENT AND THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION. EXPERTS SAY SOME OF TRUMP’S MOVES ARE LIKELY TO FACE LEGAL CHALLENGES. THE U.S. CONSTITUTION DICTATES THAT PEOPLE BORN IN THE U.S. ARE CITIZENS. PETE HEGSETH NOMINATION TO BE THE NEXT SECRETARY OF DEFENSE IS ONE STEP CLOSER TO CONFIRMATION. ALL 14 REPUBLICANS ON THE COMMITTEE VOTED IN FAVOR OF HEGSETH, WHILE ALL 13 DEMOCRATS VOTED AGAINST HIM. JOHN RATCLIFFE IS ALSO A STEP CLOSER TO BEING CONFIRMED AS THE NEXT DIRECTOR OF THE CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY. ALL THREE VOTES AGAINST RATCLIFFE WERE CAST BY DEMOCRATS. IT’S UNCLEAR WHEN THE FULL SENATE WILL VOTE TO CONFIRM HEGSETH AND RATCLIFFE, THOUGH THURSDAY WOULD LIKELY BE THE EARLIEST UNLESS ALL MEMBERS AGREE TO MOVE THINGS ALONG MORE QUICKLY. MEANWHILE, BUSINESSMAN ELON MUSK IS FACING PUSHBACK FOR AN INAUGURATION FESTIVITY. ARM GESTURE. MUSK GAVE BRIEF REMARKS DURING A RALLY YESTERDAY, TWICE LIFTING UP HIS ARM, AND SOME PEOPLE ARE LIKENING IT TO A NAZI SALUTE. MUST THANK THE CROWD FOR REELECTING TRUMP BACK INTO THE OFFICE, HE SAID, QUOTE, THIS WAS A FORK IN THE ROAD OF HUMAN CIVILIZATION AND ALSO THE FUTURE OF CIVILIZATION IS ASSURED. MUSK IS KNOWN FOR HIS BUSINESS IN SPACEX AND TESLA. A SNOW SQUALL WARNING WAS ISSUED IN THE TEXAS PANHANDLE FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER. THE WARNING WAS DUE TO A NARROW BAND OF INTENSE SNOW CREATING NEAR ZERO VISIBILITY ALONG AN ARCTIC COLD FRONT AS IT MOVED SOUTH THROUGH THE PANHANDLE. EXTREME COLD WARNINGS REMAIN IN EFFECT FOR THE AREA UNTIL LATER TODAY. SLICK ROAD CONDITIONS WERE REPORTED THROUGHOUT THE AREA AS WELL. WE’RE TOLD WIND CHILLS COULD FALL TO AS LOW AS 25 DEGREES BELOW ZERO THIS MORNING. SOME WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA SCHOOLS ANNOUNCED SOME SCHEDULE CHANGES BECAUSE OF COLD TEMPERATURES AND ROAD CONDITIONS. AVERY AND MADISON COUNTY SCHOOLS WILL BOTH OPERATE ON A REMOTE LEARNING SCHEDULE. BUNCOMBE AND MACON COUNTY SCHOOLS WILL OPERATE ON A TWO HOUR DELAY. GRAHAM AND HAYWOOD COUNTY SCHOOLS WILL BE CLOSED. BUNCOMBE COUNTY SCHOOLS DOES NOTE BREAKFAST WILL BE SERVED WHEN STUDENTS ARRIVE. HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WILL CONTINUE WITH THEIR EXAMS AS PART OF THE DELAY SCHEDULE. WELL GOOD MORNING. IT’S 649. IT IS FREEZING OUT THERE. 14 DEGREES IN ASHEVILLE, 23 IN PICKENS, 22 DEGREES IN GREENVILLE. AS WE TAKE A LOOK, SOUTHERN PARTS OF THE UPSTATE, STILL IN THE LOW 20S. SO IT IS A HARD FREEZE FOR EVERYONE. FEELS EVEN COLDER, FEELS LIKE 13 RIGHT NOW IN UNION, FEELS LIKE SIX IN HENDERSONVILLE. AND YES, WE’VE GOT SOME SNOWFALL OUT TO THE WEST FOR OUR AREA. SPECIFICALLY, WE’VE GOT CLOUDS, SO IT’S GOING TO BE A CLOUDY, COLD DAY. I DO THINK WE’LL GET ABOUT 3 OR 4 DEGREES WARMER THAN WHAT THIS PARTICULAR MODEL THINKS, SO WE WILL GET ABOVE FREEZING, AT LEAST FOR MOST OF US. BUT AGAIN, THAT DOESN’T HAPPEN UNTIL LATER TODAY. SO IT’S A TIME WHERE YOU WANT TO EXTEND DRIPPING THOSE PIPES. IF YOU LIVE ACROSS WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA, THOSE ARE GOING TO NEED TO BE DRIPPING ALL DAY, ALL NIGHT. AT LEAST THROUGH THURSDAY AFTERNOON. AND THEN WE’LL START TO SEE A LITTLE BIT OF A WARMING TREND. BEST CHANCE FOR A FEW FLURRIES IS SOUTH OF I-85 AFTER 3:00 TODAY, AND FOR MOST OF US, WE WON’T SEE ANYTHING AT ALL BUT A LIGHT DUSTING. SOME LIGHT ACCUMULATION FOR A FEW OF US IS POSSIBLE. WE’LL HAVE SOME MORE DETAILS, INCLUDING YOUR FOUR DAY PLUS THAT’S COMING UP IN LESS THAN 7 OR 8 MINUTES FROM RIGHT NOW. BUT FIRST, LET’S GET YOU OUTSIDE. GET A CHECK ON THOSE ROADS. HOW’S IT LOOKING, PEYTON? PARELLA. IT’S A BEAUTIFUL AND CHILLY DAY ON YOUR ROADS AND IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. THIS IS I-85 SOUTH AT MAULDIN ROAD IN GREENVILLE COUNTY. JUST A FEW VEHICLES ON THE ROAD. WE’VE GOT SOME CARS AND TRUCKS OUT THERE. PEOPLE HEADING TO SCHOOL, HEADING TO WORK. AT THIS POINT. NOTHING CRAZY THOUGH. WE’RE CHECKING OUR TRAVEL TIMES. EVERYTHING IN THE GREEN. 12 MINUTES I-240 TO ASHEVILLE HIGHWAY UP FROM 11 MINUTES SIX MINUTES. AIRPORT TO WOODRUFF ROAD AND 13 MINUTES FAIRVIEW ROAD TO DOWNTOWN. AND HEY, IF YOU HAVE A LAYOVER IN ATLANTA, YOU’RE IN GOOD COMPANY. HARTSFIELD-JACKSON ATLANTA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT WAS NAMED THE WORLD’S BUSIEST AIRPORT FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW, ACCORDING TO THE AVIATION ANALYTICS FIRMS. RESEARCH. FOUR OF THE TOP TEN BUSIEST AIRPORTS WERE IN THE UNITED STATES, AND ALL OF THE TOP AIRPORTS SAW GROWTH IN 2024, AND THE OHIO STATE WON ITS FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP SINCE 2014. LAST NIGHT IN THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME, THE BUCKEYES BEAT NOTRE DAME 34 TO 23, IN ATLANTA, A LATE BUCKEYES FIELD GOAL PUT THAT GAME OUT OF REACH. OHIO STATE WINS ITS FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP SINCE 2014 AND THE SEVENTH IN SCHOOL HISTORY. THE BUCKEYES FINISHED WITH A 14 AND TWO RECORD. NOTRE DAME, WITH THE LOSS, ALSO FINISHES 14 AND TWO. THE CONTEST MARKED THE END OF THE LONGEST COLLEGE FOOTBALL SEASON IN HISTORY, AND THE DEBUT OF THE 12 TEAM PLAYOFF FIELD, NOTHING BUNDT CAKES WILL SOON REQUIRE STORES TO BE OPEN ON SUNDAYS. THE BAKERY CHAIN OF GIVEN FRANCHISE OWNERS THE OPTION OF BEING CLOSED ON SUNDAYS, BUT CORPORATE REVERSED THE POLICY IN THE PAST YEAR. ALL STORES ARE NOW REQUIRED TO BE OPEN A MINIMUM OF FIVE HOURS ON SUNDAYS STARTING IN FEBRUARY. SOME FRANCHISEES ARE NOT HAPPY, SAYING THE OPTION BEFORE WAS A DECIDING FACTOR IN CHOOSING TO INVEST. NOTHING. BUNDT CAKE SAYS IT WOULD CONSIDER EXCEPTIONS FOR STORES OPEN LONGER THAN SIX MONTHS, BUT SO FAR, STORE OWNERS SAY REQUESTS FOR EXCEPTIONS HAVE BEEN IGNORED OR NOT. GRANTED, NEW FRANCHISE CONTRACTS DO INCLUDE THAT NEW RULE. IT’S 651. YOU KNOW, A PHRASE I DIDN’T HAVE ON MY 2025 BINGO CARD? SOUP DROPS, COLD AND FLU SEASON IS AT ITS PEAK, AND CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP IS A POPULAR REMEDY. SO SOUP MAKER PROGRESSO IS MAKING IT EVEN EASIER FOR SOUP LOVERS TO GET THAT WARM FEELING THAT COMES FROM EATING SOUP WITH TRADITIONAL CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP DROPS. THEY SAY THAT SOUNDS GOOD. #N.J #school #closings #delayed #openings #due #snow #ice #Tuesday #JanJCPS, we need equitable school bus transportation now. Here’s what we propose.
Last year’s decision by Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) to eliminate transportation services for magnet and traditional school students has had profound and disproportionate effects on our community, particularly impacting Black and low-income families. This policy change has not only disrupted students’ education but has also exacerbated existing racial and economic disparities within our school system.
This summer, I sat around a table with the mayor, Metro Council president and JCPS and TARC leaders. I watched them put the final touches on an agreement that should have restored service to at least some children disenfranchised only a few months prior. A large press conference followed as many in this community hoped we were on the path to success, even if only marginally. I, along with several other community leaders, stepped away from the table believing the subject matter experts and professionals remaining in the room could get the job done.
We were wrong.
JCPS has failed to keep promises on magnet school bus transportation
The following months were full of confusion, missteps and finger-pointing. The promise of August turned to September, then October, then December, and now here we sit in January with nothing to show for it all. Yes, we have the necessary bus drivers, but no promise has been kept, and there is no plan. That needs to change. On Jan. 28, the JCPS Board of Education agenda states that they will take action on a “Transportation Plan – Return Service.” That is a good thing, but given the timing and everything connected to this decision, fundamental questions and decisions must be addressed.
The decision to cut transportation has forced many families into untenable situations. Thousands of students opted to change schools or not even apply to schools of their choice due to lack of transportation. Other parents have attempted to keep their children in the desired schools and have taken on the challenge of transportation themselves — adding costs, stress and strain to family’s lives. After suing JCPS for cutting her son’s bus service, a mother now faces legal repercussions for being unable to transport him to school, Louisville Public Media reported. This situation underscores the dire consequences of the district’s actions on families who lack the resources to adapt to sudden policy changes.
Gerth: Hopefully DEI isn’t dead – and these companies aren’t afraid of equity | Opinion
Jefferson County Public School students arrive at the Nichols Bus Compound to transfer buses on Friday, August 18, 2023. JCPS had to rethink their strategy after the first day of school saw students arriving home late. Some close to 10pm.
The Louisville Urban League stands in solidarity with these families and calls upon the JCPS school board to take immediate, decisive and comprehensive action to rectify this inequitable situation. We propose the following measures:
Restore school bus service, reopen student assignment process
-
Restore transportation for the spring semester and next school year: Reinstate bus services for magnet and traditional schools, prioritizing students from low-income households and those residing in areas with limited access to alternative transportation. While only a small number of students may benefit this spring, every little bit counts, and this will give the transportation department time to create more efficiencies for the fall. The more important step is for the superintendent to reopen the assignment process so students who will now have transportation can make their choices based on the new reality. This step is crucial to ensure that all students have equal opportunities to attend the schools of their choice. Both steps must happen together to ensure equity.
-
Consider outsourcing transportation services: JCPS should seriously explore partnerships with third-party transportation providers to address logistical challenges and improve efficiency. Outsourcing could alleviate the current driver shortage and reduce bureaucratic inefficiencies, ensuring more reliable service for students. I openly acknowledge that with unionized drivers and shortages nationwide, utilizing a third-party company may not be an easy option or solve the problem completely. But the district’s desire to “go it alone” has proven insufficient at best. We owe it to our children to seek the best possible options.
-
Implement an equitable assignment plan: Develop and enforce a student assignment plan that guarantees access to magnet and traditional schools regardless of a student’s transportation options. This plan should include reserving a percentage of seats in every magnet and traditional school for students who reside in the area of that building. This would not solve the issue for all students but would ensure equitable access to significantly more students than currently available.
Opinion: The Democratic Party doesn’t respect Black Americans. I’m leaving it behind.
Education is a fundamental right, and transportation and economic barriers should not hinder access to it. The current situation not only undermines the academic success of our students but also perpetuates systemic inequities that our community has long struggled to overcome.
We urge the superintendent and JCPS school board to act swiftly in implementing these recommendations, demonstrating a commitment to equity and the well-being of all students. Our children deserve nothing less than full access to the educational opportunities that will shape their futures and, by extension, the future of our community.

JCPS, we need equitable school bus transportation now. Here’s what we propose. As students, parents, and community members, we have seen firsthand the disparities in school bus transportation within Jefferson County Public Schools. Some students have to wake up hours before school starts just to catch a bus that takes them across town, while others have a short, convenient ride to school. This inequity is unacceptable and must be addressed immediately.
To create a more equitable school bus transportation system, we propose the following changes:
1. Implement a tiered bus system based on distance from school. By organizing bus routes based on proximity to the school, we can ensure that students who live farther away have access to transportation without having to wake up excessively early.
2. Increase the number of buses and bus stops in underserved areas. Many students in low-income neighborhoods have to walk long distances to catch a bus, putting their safety at risk. By adding more buses and stops in these areas, we can provide a safer and more convenient transportation option for all students.
3. Provide transportation options for students with disabilities. Currently, many students with disabilities face challenges in accessing school bus transportation. By offering specialized transportation services, such as wheelchair-accessible buses or door-to-door service, we can ensure that all students have equal access to education.
4. Improve communication and transparency around bus routes and schedules. Many families struggle to navigate the complex bus system, leading to missed buses and late arrivals at school. By providing clear and easy-to-access information about bus routes and schedules, we can help families plan their transportation more effectively.
Overall, it is essential that JCPS prioritize equitable school bus transportation for all students. By implementing these changes, we can ensure that every student has equal access to education and opportunities for success. Join us in advocating for a more equitable school bus transportation system in JCPS.
