  • CLOSURES: What GA school districts are canceling, moving to virtual learning for winter weather? – WSB-TV Channel 2


    ATLANTA — Parts of the Southeast are bracing for another winter storm that will move through Tuesday.

    Severe Weather Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Brad Nitz says the winter storm will be historic across the Gulf Coast for several cities that usually don’t see accumulating snow.

    Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp declared a statewide State of Emergency on Monday ahead of a winter storm that will move through parts of the state on Tuesday.

    Here is a list of the school districts and colleges in the Channel 2 Action News viewing area that updated their schedules for Tuesday.

    Will Howard has led a high-powered Ohio State offense to the College Football Playoff title game vs. Notre Dame.

    The Buckeyes’ quarterback, in his first season with the team after transferring from Kansas State, has had a strong season. Through Ohio State’s 15 games, Howard has totaled 3,779 passing yards, 33 touchdown passes, and 10 interceptions in offensive coordinator Chip Kelly’s talented offense.

    Howard, a fifth-year senior, will be playing his final game with the Buckeyes in the national championship no matter the result. His journey at Ohio State will last just one season, but Howard has been playing closer to his hometown than when he was with the Wildcats.

    Howard, a member of the 2020 recruiting class, wasn’t considered a top-tier quarterback prospect, but he still garnered some interest. The 247Sports Composite Rankings had Howard as the No. 882 overall player in the class, No. 33 pro-style quarterback, and No. 7 player out of Pennsylvania.

    Also receiving offers from schools like Rutgers, Kansas, Minnesota, Maryland, and more, Howard, a three-star recruit, ultimately chose Kansas State in 2019. He would spend four seasons with the Wildcats, throwing a total of 48 touchdown passes. 

    Howard entered the transfer portal after the 2023 season, later committing to Ohio State for his final collegiate season.

  • Will Howard, Emeka Egbuka, Denzel Burke Among Buckeyes Who Could Set School Records in National Championship Game


    The only stat that matters in the national championship game is which team scores more points, but numerous Ohio State players will also have the chance to break school records and achieve statistical milestones in Monday night’s season finale.

    The team as a whole would break a national record just by winning the game as Ohio State would become the first team ever to beat five teams who were ranked in the top five of the AP poll at the time the Buckeyes played them. Having already earned wins over No. 3 Penn State and No. 5 Indiana in the regular season, followed by wins over No. 1 Oregon and No. 4 Texas in the CFP quarterfinals and semifinals, Ohio State would break a tie with 2019 LSU, 1967 USC and 1943 Notre Dame with a win over 2024 Notre Dame, the No. 3 team in the AP poll that preceded the College Football Playoff.

    There’s always the possibility that any single-game, College Football Playoff or national championship game record could be broken with a spectacular performance Monday night. There are also several season or career school records and milestones, though, that are well within reach of being broken by various Buckeyes in the final game of the season, which will also double as the final college football game for the likes of Will Howard, Emeka Egbuka, TreVeyon Henderson, Denzel Burke and potentially Quinshon Judkins, among others.

    Howard could set completion percentage record

    Entering the national championship game, Will Howard has completed 72.6% of his passing attempts across 15 games this season. If Howard’s completion percentage for the season remains at 72% or better after Monday night’s game, Howard would break Ohio State’s single-season completion percentage record, which was previously set at 71.9% by C.J. Stroud in 2021.

    As long as Howard’s season-long completion percentage remains above 70%, Howard will also break OSU’s career completion percentage record, currently held by Dwayne Haskins.

    Howard also has a chance to tie Craig Krenzel’s record for the most wins in a single season by an Ohio State quarterback with 14.

    Egbuka could break career receiving records

    Emeka Egbuka has a chance to break two of Ohio State’s three major career receiving records on Monday night.

    The record Egbuka seems likely to break is Ohio State’s all-time receptions record, as he needs just three catches against Notre Dame to reach 202 for his career, which would surpass K.J. Hill’s record of 201 catches for his career.

    The more challenging but still attainable record for Egbuka to break is Michael Jenkins’ record for career receiving yards. Entering Monday’s game with 2,804 career receiving yards, Egbuka needs 95 yards against the Fighting Irish to surpass Jenkins’ career mark of 2,898. Egbuka has surpassed 95 yards in a game 10 times in his Ohio State career, but he’ll need his first 95-yard game since September to break Jenkins’ record.

    Egbuka needs only 53 yards against Notre Dame to reach 1,000 receiving yards for the season. If he reaches that milestone, he’ll become just the second receiver in Ohio State history with two 1,000-yard seasons, joining his former teammate Marvin Harrison Jr.

    Henderson, Judkins could both reach 1,000

    Both of Ohio State’s standout running backs enter the national championship game on the cusp of reaching 1,000 rushing yards for the season. Henderson has rushed for 967 yards and Judkins has rushed for 960 yards in Ohio State’s first 15 games of the year.

    If Henderson rushes for 33 yards or more and Judkins rushes for 40 yards or more against Notre Dame, they’ll become just the third pair of Buckeyes to rush for 1,000 yards in the same season. Running backs Archie Griffin and Pete Johnson were the first Buckeye duo to accomplish the feat in 1975. Running back Carlos Hyde and quarterback Braxton Miller each topped 1,000 yards in 2013.

    Henderson would become the 10th Buckeye with multiple 1,000-yard rushing seasons, having rushed for 1,248 yards as a freshman in 2021. Judkins, who also surpassed 1,000 yards in both of his two previous collegiate seasons at Ole Miss, would be the 26th different Buckeye to rush for 1,000 yards in any season.

    Burke could break record for most defensive starts

    Assuming Denzel Burke returns to action and starts at cornerback for the Buckeyes against Notre Dame, he’ll make the 51st start of his four-year Ohio State career, breaking a tie with Luke Fickell for the most starts by a defensive player in Ohio State history.

    Burke, who has started every game he’s played in as a Buckeye since starting the season opener in his freshman season in 2021, would move into second place for the most starts all-time by any Buckeye behind only Billy Price, who starts 55 games on Ohio State’s offensive line from 2014-17.



    As the Ohio State Buckeyes prepare to face off against the Alabama Crimson Tide in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, all eyes are on star players like quarterback Justin Fields and running back Trey Sermon. However, there are a few other Buckeyes who could also make history and set school records in the big game.

    Wide receiver Chris Olave and tight end Jeremy Ruckert have been reliable targets for Fields all season, but it’s Will Howard, Emeka Egbuka, and Denzel Burke who could steal the spotlight on Monday night.

    Howard, a freshman running back, has shown flashes of brilliance throughout the season and could be poised for a breakout performance in the championship game. If he can find the end zone a few times, he could set a new school record for most rushing touchdowns in a national championship game.

    Egbuka, another freshman, has been a dynamic playmaker on special teams and in the receiving game. If he can break off a few big plays and rack up some yards, he could set a new school record for most receiving yards in a national championship game.

    Burke, a freshman cornerback, has been a lockdown defender all season and has shown a knack for making big plays in crucial moments. If he can come up with a few interceptions or pass breakups in the championship game, he could set a new school record for most turnovers forced in a national championship game.

    While all eyes will be on the Buckeyes’ stars, don’t be surprised if Howard, Egbuka, and Burke make a name for themselves and etch their names into the Ohio State record books in the national championship game.

  • Jacksonville area school closings list for winter storm


    Several area school districts have not yet made definitive plans on closing Wednesday for winter weather – but are monitoring the situation.

    JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Several counties across the First Coast, including Duval County and Jacksonville, are under a Winter Storm Watch as a winter weather system is set to bring wintry precipitation and possibly snow to the area.

    Area school districts are actively monitoring the winter weather threat, and some districts and universities have already announced closures due to the possibility of snow and ice on roadways.

    Weather models are showing a potential cold snap that could bring high temperatures down into the 40s with low temperatures into the 30s and 20s. A stiff, northerly breeze could produce wind chills in the 30s. This would raise concerns about icy conditions on bridges and overpasses, particularly in areas like inland southeast Georgia. 

    School districts in Nassau County, and Ware and Camden counties in Georgia, are actively monitoring conditions before they make a call. Here’s what school districts and universities are saying:

    Duval County Public Schools 

    In a message to Parents Monday, DCPS said their schools will remain open as normal for Tuesday, Jan. 21, but have not made a decision yet on closing Wednesday, Jan. 22, when the bulk of the winter weather is forecasted to hit the First Coast. 

    Nassau County School District

    Schools will remain open on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. Due to anticipated winter weather conditions, they are continuing to monitor forecasts in partnership with Nassau Emergency Management to determine school operations for Wednesday, January 22, 2025.

    Camden County Public Schools

    Schools will be open on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

    Due to the forecasted winter weather conditions (potential wintry mix, icy roads, below freezing temperatures, and low wind chill temperatures), schools will be closed on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.

    All afterschool activities for Tuesday and Wednesday will be canceled.

    They urge residents to sign up for CodeRed.

    Glynn County

    Glynn County Schools will remain open on Tuesday, January 21. However, all extracurricular activities and after-school programs will conclude by 4 p.m. that day.

    Due to potential hazards such as black ice on roadways, impacts to power lines and trees, and freeze advisories forecasted for Tuesday night, all schools will be closed on Wednesday, January 22, as a precautionary measure.

    Ware County

    Ware County Schools will release students and staff 90 minutes early on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Additionally, all schools will remain closed on Wednesday, January 22, 2025. All afterschool activities are canceled for Tuesday, January 21 and Wednesday, January 22.

    DAFFODIL Pre-K will release at 12:45PM, and elementary schools will follow at 1:00PM. The high school will release at 1:38PM, and both middle schools will release at 2:00PM. 

    Charlton County

    Charlton County Schools will be open and on regular schedule on Tuesday, Jan. 21. However, all after-school activities are canceled.

    On Wednesday, all schools are closed for students and staff. 

    Schools are expected to open as usual on Thursday.

    Brantley County

    Brantley County schools have canceled after-school activities Tuesday. Schools will dismiss early at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

    Schools will be closed Wednesday. 

    Florida State University

    Florida State University’s Tallahassee and Panama City campuses will cancel classes and suspend normal business operations Tuesday, Jan. 21, and Wednesday, Jan. 22. This includes the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering.

    Florida A&M University 

    Florida A&M University (FAMU) will be closed for all students, faculty, staff and non-essential personnel on the Tallahassee, Quincy, and Crestview campuses for the entire day. 

    Coastal Health District

    Due to expected winter weather and precipitation, all operations in the Coastal Health District will be suspended at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, January 21 and remain suspended all day Wednesday, January 22. They anticipate a delayed opening on Thursday, January 23 at 11 a.m. This includes all health department clinics and offices in Bryan, Camden, Chatham, Effingham, Glynn, Liberty, Long, and McIntosh Counties.

    Anyone with an appointment previously scheduled during the closure will be contacted to reschedule.

On their faces was the possibility of destiny.The Middie Marching Band witnessed 2003 MHS graduate JD Vance being sworn in as the 50th Vice President of the United States. The families know exactly how far that is from the working class factory town.”I don’t think I could ever be a president or vice president, but its pretty cool that someone from here was able to step up,” band member Chloe Patterson said.Vance selected the marching band of his alma mater to play at the inauguration parade last month, with MHS Carmela Cotter accepting the invitation, saying, “We are honored and excited to be included in this historic moment and represent our district, city, county, and state in celebration of Middletown High School alumnus, Vice President-Elect J.D.     The Middletown High School band performed during the inaugural parade in Washington D.C. on Monday.

    The parade was moved indoors due to weather.

    “I’m extremely excited,” said Stephanie Pringle, who sent off her daughter, Machala, Sunday morning. “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity for generations to come. My kid is in the inaugural parade. I am a proud parent.”

    With a police escort, buses rolled from Middletown high’s campus with 146 students, staff and chaperones in tow, beginning their eight-hour ride for their journey into history.

    The educational opportunities they will have around the parade, I’m excited for them,” said Monica Rothe, who saw off her daughter Abigale.

    There were warm hugs and goodbyes as the students boarded the bus. On their faces was the possibility of destiny.

    The Middie Marching Band witnessed 2003 MHS graduate JD Vance being sworn in as the 50th Vice President of the United States.

    The families know exactly how far that is from the working class factory town.

    “I don’t think I could ever be a president or vice president, but its pretty cool that someone from here was able to step up,” band member Chloe Patterson said.

    Vance selected the marching band of his alma mater to play at the inauguration parade last month, with MHS Carmela Cotter accepting the invitation, saying, “We are honored and excited to be included in this historic moment and represent our district, city, county, and state in celebration of Middletown High School alumnus, Vice President-Elect J.D. Vance.”

    The district is covering the cost of travel for students and staff to participate in the event.

    SMYRNA, Tenn. (WZTV) — A local high school band will be performing at the Inauguration Day Parade in Washington D.C., thanks to a generous final donation.

    Stewarts Creek High School’s marching band in Smyrna was selected to represent Tennessee in the 60th Inaugural Presidential Parade of President Donald J. Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance on January 20 in D.C. The only snag was each selected high school is expected to cover the cost of the trip. In their case, for all 120 band members and 40 adult staff members and chaperones.

    Stewarts Creek was able to raise most of the amount needed for the entire band to travel to the inauguration but was short $40,000.

    On Thursday, Tractor Supply surprised the band with the final $40,000 needed to reach their $130,000 goal.

    An announcement was made the weekend ahead of the inauguration that the band would no longer participate in the parade because of weather.

    On Monday, Rutherford County Schools reported Stewart Creek High Band was reinstated to perform in the 60th Presidential Inauguration parade.
