Solon city schools earn high rankings from U.S. News and World Report | Local News

The U.S. News and World Report recently ranked multiple schools in the Solon City School District in the 2025 Best Elementary and Best Middle Schools rankings, which were released in November. The report includes more than 79,000 public schools that are ranked at the state and district level, a U.S. News & World Report news release stated.

Orchard Middle School earned the No. 1 spot among all Ohio middle schools, while Solon Middle School secured No. 4. In addition, all three of the district’s elementary schools ranked in the top 10 statewide, with Parkside ranking No. 5 in Ohio, Roxbury at No. 7 and Lewis at No. 10.

The 2025 Best Elementary and Best Middle Schools rankings are based on publicly available data from the U.S. Department of Education, the release stated. For district-level rankings, at least two of the top-performing schools must rank in the top 75% of the overall elementary or middle school rankings to qualify for district-level recognition, according to the release.

The release stated the rankings methodology focused on state assessments of students who were proficient or above proficient in mathematics and reading/language arts while accounting for student background and achievement in core subjects. Student-teacher ratios are applied to break ties in the overall score, the release stated.

“The 2025 Best Elementary and Middle Schools rankings offer parents a way to evaluate how schools are providing a high-quality education and preparing students for future success,” LaMont Jones, managing editor for Education at U.S. News, stated in the release. “The data empowers families and communities to advocate for their children’s education. Research continues to indicate that how students perform academically at these early grade levels is a big factor in their success in high school and beyond.”

According to the U.S. News and World Report’s 2024 rankings, Solon High School was named the No. 1 in the Cleveland metropolitan area as the top-ranked high school in the region and ranked No. 4 among all Ohio high schools. In 2023, Solon High School was named the top public high school in the Cleveland area and ranked No. 6 in the entire state in the U.S. News and World Report’s 2023-24 Best U.S. High Schools report, the Cleveland Jewish News previously reported.

Along with Solon City Schools District, the report listed Chagrin Falls Exempted Village school’s Chagrin Falls Middle School which ranked No. 2 in the state rankings.

Solon City Schools Shine in National Rankings

Solon, Ohio – Solon City Schools have once again received high praise from U.S. News and World Report, earning top rankings in the latest annual report. The district, known for its academic excellence and innovative programs, has solidified its reputation as one of the best in the nation.

According to the report, Solon High School was ranked #1 in the state of Ohio and #15 in the nation, based on factors such as graduation rates, college readiness, and student performance on state assessments. Solon Middle School and Solon Elementary School also received high marks, further highlighting the district’s commitment to providing a top-notch education for all students.

“We are incredibly proud of our students, teachers, and staff for their hard work and dedication to excellence,” said Superintendent Dr. Joseph Regano. “These rankings are a testament to the outstanding educational opportunities available in Solon City Schools.”

In addition to academic success, Solon City Schools have also been recognized for their strong extracurricular programs, including athletics, music, and the arts. Education is a fundamental human right, yet many students are still left behind in our current education system. In “The Right to Learn: A Blueprint for Creating Schools That Work,” authors Linda Darling-Hammond, Brigid Barron, P. David Pearson, and Alan H. Schoenfeld provide a comprehensive guide to creating schools that truly meet the needs of all students.

“The Right to Learn” also emphasizes the importance of collaboration among educators, parents, and community members in creating schools that work for all students. By working together to create a shared vision for education, schools can better support the academic, social, and emotional development of all students.

The Revolution: It’s Time to Empower Change in Our Schools

As an educator, I have seen firsthand the need for revolution in our educational system. It’s time to break free from the traditional ways of teaching and learning and embrace a new era of innovation and empowerment.

We need to empower our students to think critically, problem-solve creatively, and collaborate effectively. We need to provide them with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in an ever-changing world.

But this revolution cannot happen without the support of teachers, administrators, parents, and policymakers. We must all work together to create a learning environment that fosters growth, curiosity, and exploration.

It’s time to rethink the way we assess student learning and success. It’s time to move away from standardized testing and towards more authentic, relevant assessments that truly measure student growth and achievement.

It’s time to prioritize social and emotional learning, mental health support, and diversity and inclusion in our schools. Every student deserves to feel safe, supported, and valued.

It’s time to provide teachers with the resources, training, and support they need to be successful in the classroom. We must invest in our educators and give them the tools they need to inspire and empower our students.

The revolution starts now. It’s time to empower change in our schools and create a brighter future for all. Let’s work together to make it happen.

In a world that is constantly evolving, education must adapt to meet the needs of the future. Traditional methods of teaching are no longer enough to prepare students for the challenges that lie ahead. In order to truly inspire and engage students, educators must embrace a new approach to learning that incorporates imagination, observation, and zero-based thinking.

Imagination is a powerful tool that allows students to think creatively and outside the box. By encouraging students to use their imaginations, educators can help them see beyond the confines of traditional education and envision a world of endless possibilities. Imagination also fosters a sense of curiosity and wonder, driving students to explore new ideas and concepts.

Observation is another key component of timeless learning. By encouraging students to observe the world around them, educators can help them develop critical thinking skills and a deeper understanding of the world. Observation allows students to make connections between different subjects and concepts, leading to a more holistic approach to learning.

Zero-based thinking is a concept that challenges students to question everything they know and start from scratch. By adopting a zero-based thinking mindset, students can break free from preconceived notions and think more creatively and critically. Schools are constantly striving to improve student outcomes and create a positive learning environment for all students. One way to achieve this is by consulting pupils and involving them in decision-making processes. But what exactly is in it for schools to consult pupils?

    1. Improved student engagement: When students feel like their opinions are valued and that they have a say in decisions that affect them, they are more likely to be engaged in their learning and school community.

    2. Increased sense of ownership: By involving pupils in decision-making processes, schools can help students develop a sense of ownership over their education and school environment. This can lead to increased motivation and a greater sense of responsibility.

Better understanding of student needs: Pupils are the ones who experience the school environment on a daily basis, so they have valuable insights into what is working well and what could be improved. Consulting pupils can help schools better understand and address the needs of their students.

    4. Enhanced school culture: By involving pupils in decision-making processes, schools can create a more inclusive and democratic school culture. This can help foster a sense of community and collaboration among students, teachers, and staff.
