Fantasy Basketball: Why it’s time to scoop up Scoot Henderson | The Playlist

Yahoo Sports fantasy analyst Dan Titus discusses why the Portland Trail Blazers point guard is a waiver wire target, Week 10 streaming advice, and the impact of the D’Angelo Russell – Dorian Finney-Smith trade.

    Video Transcript

    Week 10 in fantasy basketball.

    Welcome back to the playlist.

We had fights, we had trades.

It’s been a crazy week in fantasy basketball, but first and foremost wanna wish everyone a happy holiday and an early happy new year as well.

    Let’s get to my pickups.

First pickup’s gotta be Spencer Dinwoodie.

Lucadontis is set to miss at least a month with a calf injury, and Spencer Dinwoodie’s filled in.

Great for Lucadontis in the interim.

He’s averaging over 17 points, 4 boards, and 6 dimes in relief of.

    Luke Adonche.

So at under 40% roster, you need to add him in all leagues.

Next, you gotta pick up Scottie Pippen Jr. John Morant is day to day with a shoulder injury, and Scottie Pippen Jr. has been one of the best backups in fantasy basketball this year, averaging 15 points, 5 boards, and 6 dimes without John Morant on the court.

This guy is a two-way player, can get you a lot of steals as well.

Make sure you don’t sleep on him.

And then lastly, at under 30% roster gotta add Scoot Henderson.

I know he’s inefficient, prefer him in points lead.

But right now over the last 7 days, Scoot Henderson has been a top 50 player.

    He’s averaging 17 points, 3 rebounds, and 6 dimes.

More importantly, he’s getting stocks and he’s hitting 3s.

Both rarities for Scoot Henderson, so make sure you pick him up while he’s still hot.

Let’s get to the schedule things you need to know.

Alright, let’s talk some strategy and how you’re gonna manage your week.

Week 10 is very good for streaming purposes.

You can actually stream on every day because we don’t have any day or any slate that exceeds 9.

Games, which has been pretty rare over the last couple of weeks and we have games every day of the week.

So if we’re looking at the schedule, I’m liking the teams that are playing 4 games.

That’s the 76ers, the Nuggets, the Lakers, and the Knicks.

Early in the week, try to snag guys like Peyton Watson because Aaron Gordon’s gonna be missing at least the next couple of games, as well as Derrick Jones Jr, a guy that’s gonna be playing 3 games in 4 nights, which is a huge advantage for you in fantasy.

He knows he’s gonna get some rebounds.

He’s also gonna get some stock.

And some 3s while we wait for Kawhi Leonard to return, this is gonna be a good pickup for fantasy managers.

And later in the week, take a look at Dalton Kne.

Now that there’s gonna be some movement on the Lakers, he’s been playing very well.

He could be that primary option off the bench with D’Angelo Russell now back on the Brooklyn Nets.

And look at Lugen Dor as well, because even though he hasn’t been playing particularly well coming off of that ankle injury, the Thunder do have 3 games in 4 nights to close out from Thursday to Sunday.

So If you can get a little scheduling advantage by rostering those guys and all those teams play 4 games in week 10.

Teams you’ll want to avoid Phoenix Suns, the only team that plays 2 games in week 10.

But the good thing about the Suns is that if you’re looking to head to week 11, they actually are the only team that plays 5 games in week 11.

So you’ll want to pay attention to that if you have any extra transactions left over from week 10, maybe you wanna pick up Royce O’Neal, Bradley Beal, Devin Booker, they’ve been in and out of the line.

    Line up with respective injuries.

So Royce O’Neal, regardless of the situation, has been a guy that’s been pretty valuable in 12 team leagues, points or 9 categories.

So if he’s on waivers because of his recent injury, make sure you pick him up at the end of the week if you have the roster space available.

All right, let’s get to what I alluded to before, trade season.

All right, let’s talk about the trade that went down on Sunday.

D’Angelo Russell, along with Maxwell Lewis in 3 2nd round picks, went to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Dorian Finney Smith.

    And Shake Milton.

I think this is a better real life move than it is for fantasy.

I think that D’Angelo Russell right now is the biggest beneficiary of this trade because he goes from a bench role in the Lakers to a starting spot with the Brooklyn Nets, an organization he has a lot of familiarity with.

He was an all-star there at one point, so him stepping into a starting role, I think we could see an uptick in his usage as well as his playmaking.

    Now Cam Johnson is also.

On the trade block, so who knows what other moves the Brooklyn Nets are planning to make, but it looks like a really good situation for D’Angelo Russell to kind of regain his fantasy stock.

I’m not worried about Cam Thomas.

I think he’s still pretty secure with his fantasy value.

Keep an eye on where the minutes go for Dorian Finney Smith.

This is a guy that was a starting forward for the Brooklyn Nets, so let’s see who kind of emerges there.

It could be Noah Clowney, but keep an eye on it.

    On the Lakers side.

Um, I’m definitely curious about how this rotation is gonna work.

Roy Hatchamura was the starting power forward, knowing how much JJ Redick really likes Dorian Finney Smith and what he brings from a versatility perspective on the defensive end, he can also shoot over 40% from 3. this is a guy that really helps this perimeter defense for the Lakers, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Dorian Finney Smith eats into Roy Hatchamura’s opportunity size a little bit here, but then also.

So take a look at Dalton Connect because I think now with D’Angelo Russell gone, there could be an opportunity for Dalton Connect to really thrive as the primary option off the bench.

So some things to look at there.

I think there’s definitely more value in D’Angelo Russell going to Brooklyn than there is during Finney Smith and Shake Milton trying to succeed from a fancy perspective in LA, but it’s a good trade for both sides.

That’ll do it for the week 10 playlist.

    I’ll see y’all in week 11.

    Peace.

  • When Will Scoot Henderson Finally Prove Himself?

When Will Scoot Henderson Finally Prove Himself?

Expectations were high in the Summer of 2023 when the Portland Trail Blazers selected Scoot Henderson as the third overall pick in the NBA Draft. Nobody expected Henderson to equal first-overall pick Victor Wembanyama, but he was touted as a clear second choice by many pundits.

87 games into his career, Henderson is coming off the bench for the Blazers in the midst of his second consecutive up-and-down season. The intermittent nature of his development has given rise to near constant questions, including this one from the Blazer’s Edge Mailbag.

    Dave,

I know not everyone is sold on Scoot, and I can’t really say I am either. Scoot is 20 years old. At his age he might be expected to be playing in college, but he never went. He played in high school obviously, then played two years in the G-League before he came here. Can we really say he was proven when Cronin took him third overall?

    Martin

Ah, the eternal question. And it’s still one of the most important facing the Blazers.

Here’s the only thing that matters right now:

11.3 points, 5.1 assists, 2.7 turnovers in 25.8 minutes per game with 39.8% field goal shooting, 30.3% from the three-point arc.

Obviously there are plenty of advanced metrics too, but bottom line, Scoot is who Scoot is. History, draft position, team needs, past expectations…none of that changes his production on the floor. While it’s improving in a couple areas—his turnovers are down slightly and his steals are up on a per-minute basis—he’s still not what you’d consider a good point guard.

Here are the first strengths that NBADraft.net listed for Henderson in preparation for the 2023 NBA Draft:

Henderson is a 6’2 190 guard with outstanding length (wingspan reported to be around 6’9) and a strong build already as a 19 year old … He also possesses standout athleticism, as he has top-notch speed, agility, body control and explosive leaping ability off one or both feet … Aggressive; has very little problems getting where he wants to on the court, even when turning the corner against ball hedges or traps, and does a great job of pressuring the defense with his burst and speed but also decelerating and/or stopping on a dime to keep defenders off balance … Absorbs contact and is rarely knocked off his pivot when slashing to the rim … Can also finish at the rim over and through defenders in emphatic fashion due to his strength and leaping skills … Likes to operate at the point of attack to create offense for himself and his teammates, and is most comfortable with the ball in his hands … Very tricky player to stay in front of due to the slithery footwork, great 1st step and outstanding ball-handling skills that he displays …

That paragraph should seem familiar. It pretty much describes Henderson’s gifts and style a season and a half on. The only part you’d quibble with is finishing at the rim, simply because it’s been more difficult for him against NBA-level defensive players.

    Here are the corresponding weaknesses:

3-point shot needs improvement (27 3FG%); added range and consistency would make him an even more dangerous matchup problem offensively … Currently more comfortable taking lower percentage shots off the dribble than open with his feet set (42 FG%) … Will inevitably be dared to shoot deep shots and has to prove that he has to be guarded in the screen game to keep defenses honest, which will have an impact on spacing given how often he operates in those types of actions … Dictates the pace well, but sometimes spends too much time pounding the rock which can stagnate the offensive flow … Natural feel for being a playmaker for others can stand to improve; sometimes takes ill-advised shots before looking to set up the offense … Given the pressure he puts on the defense, his lack of trips to the charity stripe in the G-League was disappointing (2.9 FTA/G, on 76.4%) … A work in progress defensively, not yet being consistent on a possession-by-possession basis…

I don’t think Scoot “spends too much time pounding the rock” anymore. That’s one of the things that has improved since his rookie season. The rest of it still seems apt, though.

Long story short, Scoot is Scooting. He has improved incrementally, but he hasn’t become more than he was.

The fear isn’t that we don’t know who Scoot is, it’s that we do. And it amounts to 11.3 points, 5.1 assists, 2.7 turnovers in 25.8 minutes per game with 39.8% field goal shooting, 30.3% from the three-point arc. We’d rather believe there’s more proof to be had than accept that as the ultimate reality. That’s part of why we have so many questions about him.

So, to answer your question directly, Scoot was hyped, but he was not proven coming into the NBA and he is still not proven today. The longer the current trends continue, though, the closer to proven he becomes. You’re just not going to like the proof.

Addressing the implications behind the question: yes, point guard is a tricky position to learn. We still won’t know if there’s more to Scoot for another couple years, at least. He does have time to improve.

However, for every story of a player who revolutionized their game in their first few seasons, there are eight of players who couldn’t. This is especially true of the point guard position. The same difficulty that makes us refrain from passing judgment on point guards too young also cautions that actually making the leap is hard. The odds don’t favor Henderson at the moment.

None of this is inherently an issue. It’s part of the natural course of the NBA. The problem, if any, is that the Blazers need a point guard badly. The gap between Scoot’s production and Portland’s roster requirements are causing tension. If we were back in 1991 and Henderson played behind Terry Porter and Danny Ainge, his development would be a curiosity with only upside, third overall pick or no. That’s not the case. The Blazers need to make decisions about their future. Knowing Henderson’s ceiling and the likelihood of him reaching it would go a long way towards determining their next steps.

The issue here isn’t just Henderson, but what the Blazers are asking and will be asking from him. If you need a million dollars by next Christmas, you don’t want to ask someone who’s going to start digging in his pockets and rummaging around the couch cushions for change. He may come up with a tidy sum for all you know, but you really want the guy who pulls up in a Rolls Royce already. Maybe that’s what the Blazers were hoping they were getting in Scoot. It’s not what they got. Angst is the inevitable result, fair or not.

Riding out the developmental cycle seems like the best option for all involved right now. It’s not likely that other teams will be beating down Portland’s door to get at Scoot. The Blazers will be better off betting on his potential ceiling than bailing on him. Maybe another year will make a bigger difference, or a new coach. Who knows? But conclusions aren’t likely to come soon and they won’t be direct. You might want to get a bottle of antacids and resolve to judge Scoot season-to-season (like the team does) while he puts in the work game-to-game as (a player must). Someday those divergent timelines may overlap, but right now the perspectives are too far apart to yield meaningful results.

One way or another Henderson will end up proving himself. The operative question is, as what? I know “wait and see” is a dissatisfying answer to the developmental question, but it’s all Scoot and the Blazers have right now, so there you go.

Thanks for the question! You can always send yours to blazersub@gmail.com and we’ll answer as many as we can!

When Will Scoot Henderson Finally Prove Himself?

Scoot Henderson has long been hailed as a top prospect in the world of basketball. With his explosive athleticism, smooth ball-handling skills, and scoring ability, the hype surrounding Henderson has been building for years.

However, despite all the potential and promise, Henderson has yet to truly prove himself on the court at the highest levels. Whether it’s been due to injuries, limited playing time, or simply not living up to the lofty expectations, Henderson has yet to have that breakout moment that solidifies him as a true star.

So the question remains: when will Scoot Henderson finally prove himself? Will it be in his next game, his next season, or will it take even longer for him to reach his full potential?

Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain – the basketball world is eagerly awaiting the moment when Scoot Henderson finally lives up to the hype and cements his place among the elite players in the game.

  • Scoot Henderson gives Portland Trail Blazers win

Scoot Henderson gives Portland Trail Blazers win

Three thoughts on the Utah Jazz’s 122-120 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers from Salt Lake Tribune Jazz beat writer Andy Larsen.

    1. The perfect game from the forward-thinking Jazz fan perspective

This tweet from Jazz fan @superfinn23 resonated with a lot of Jazz watchers tonight:

In many ways, this was the ideal Jazz game for the 2024-25 season. The Jazz competed well, and its rookies got significant playing time, including significant clutch minutes. The veterans that played, like Lauri Markkanen, showed out too. And in the end, the Jazz were beaten on a near-buzzer beater from Portland’s Scoot Henderson for the win with just 00.1 seconds on the clock. Such a bummer — if the organization was trying to win games.

Isaiah Collier was the team’s starting point guard, and Cody Williams was the first man off the bench, and finished the game. With Collier, the position was understandable: Keyonte George was out due to his ankle sprain.

For Williams? It was a drastic change in approach from the team’s last game, where Williams was a DNP-CD — clearly, they’ve newly decided to prioritize his playing time. He didn’t do much in his 25 minutes on the floor, with just five points, one rebound, and one assist, but he was out there anyway to finish the game.

This was, in other words, the Jazz embracing #TankNote. I understand if you have significant qualms with the Jazz tanking, not doing their best to win basketball games. But from my point of view, it sure beats subsisting in perpetual mediocrity, as they threatened to do otherwise. This is going to be an ugly period of Jazz basketball either way, but playing the young kids at least has the potential to change the state of affairs.

To be in a close loss like this was the best of both worlds: the Jazz’s rookies had the chance to gain some clutch experience, and the team looks more likely to acquire a difference-maker in next year’s draft.

    2. Isaiah Collier, starting point guard

Isaiah Collier had his second career start tonight, with Keyonte George out. In his first start against the Spurs, though, he only played 24 minutes. Tonight, he played 35.

The results were a mixed bag. He had seven assists and eight rebounds, but scored just seven points on 3-10 shooting. He also committed four fouls and had six turnovers. If we were holding him to veteran point guard standards, his performance would certainly not be good enough.

There are times, especially in transition, Collier takes advantage like no other young Jazz guard can.

There are also times, especially in the half-court, where Collier looks wildly overmatched and irresponsible with the ball.

With the latter plays, Collier looks like a player who expects his high school approach to work. In the NBA, though, the other players are even more long and even more physical, especially when you drive to the rim. As a result, his approach will simply have to change in the NBA: passes will have to come sooner, and drives to the rim will have to be more reserved, more prodding, in order to succeed.

There’s a balance here Collier can find, if he realizes it: attack with the advantage, be more cautious without it. Some young NBA players find it, others don’t. We’ll find out through the course of the year, and years to come, if he embraces that.

    3. The NBA TV ratings conversation

    OK, let’s get into it.

The general conversation has been that the NBA’s ratings are down. The commonly-cited statistic is that ratings are down 19% from last year.

ESPN responded with terrific ratings on Christmas day, that were, as they spun it, up 84% from last year.

Any conversation about this has to start out with a fact: the NBA just signed a new TV deal worth $76 billion dollars over 11 seasons. That figure about the GDP of Belize, so, you know, pretty good. That means that absolutely none of this matters: Ryan Smith and fellow owners are going to paid tens, if not hundreds, of millions of dollars above what they currently pay in player salaries in just the NBA’s TV deals. The Delta Center could see zero attendance and Smith would be doing okay from a monetary point of view.

But I also understand why people care regardless: people who like watching basketball like watching basketball with friends. If you feel like you’re the only one of your friends who watches the NBA… well, you start to feel a bit siloed. A bit… weird.

    I believe two things:

    • First, the NBA is a league with many faults and could certainly use some improving. The TV ratings are not amazing.

    • Second, the negative conversation about them is largely hooey driven by people with agendas.

The list of what people blame the NBA TV ratings on is lengthy. Is the NBA too woke? Or did it turn its back on those who care about social justice, say, with China? Are there too many games? Too many injuries? Do they not care enough? Is there too much offense, or too many threes? Or too little offense, with the teams tanking? Are there not enough stars? Are the stars being traded too much? Are the games blacked out too often? Is TV too difficult to watch? Is America’s youth to blame?

Heck, even I’ve gotten in to the act. Five years ago, I wrote a column blaming NBA TV ratings on how the NBA’s analysts didn’t talk enough about the league. I can attest: it’s fun to blame the league’s ills on your favorite concern.

So here’s what I’m asking, for anyone who makes these arguments now:

    What evidence do you have?

Hold the NBA’s TV ratings to a real standard of investigation. Many things have changed over the last 20 years. If you’re going to argue that one in particular is responsible for the ratings decline, I want to see evidence as to how your particular talking point is at fault.

I haven’t seen much of that. I’m willing to learn. But I need more facts, and less talk, to decide what, if anything, is driving the NBA downward.

Editor’s note • This story is available to Salt Lake Tribune subscribers only. Thank you for supporting local journalism.

Trail Blazers’ Scoot Henderson sinks game-winner in victory over Jazz

Portland Trail Blazers guard Scoot Henderson hit the biggest shot of his young career Thursday night when his jumper with .1 seconds remaining lifted Rip City to a 122-120 win over the Utah Jazz at the Moda Center.

Henderson came off the bench to score 18 points with 10 assists while shooting 6 of 12 from the field.

His effort complimented that of Shaedon Sharpe and Deni Avdija during a game that almost got away from the Blazers before they came back in the fourth quarter, leading to a wild final eight minutes.

The Blazers had plenty of motivation to win this game. The Jazz dominated them 141-99 on Dec. 6 and the Blazers wanted to play well for coach Billups, who missed the game to attend his grandmother’s funeral.

Lead assistant coach Nate Bjorkgren led the Blazers in a game played evenly before the Jazz began to pull away in the third quarter.

The Jazz opened the second half with three consecutive threes and led by as much as 15 in the third quarter.

Henderson said the team did a good job of maintaining its composure.

“Nobody veered off …” he said. “We knew we had to lock in on the defensive side of the ball.”

But the Blazers pushed back. A 14-6 run to start the fourth quarter allowed Portland to eat away at Utah’s lead. Eventually, a Donovan Clingan putback of a Sharpe missed three gave the Blazers a 95-94 lead with 8:18 on the clock.

The game became wild from that point on. Utah built another lead only to see the Blazers come back to go up 109-108 on a three-point shot from Avdija with 4:24 to go.

Avdija later blocked Isaiah Collier’s shot in the lane then went the other way for a layup to put the Blazers up 113-112. After a stop, Avdija got into the lane and drew a foul on Collier while scoring. The made free throw put Portland up 116-112 with 2:28 remaining.

The Jazz tied the game at 120-120 when Lauri Markkanen, who missed the first meeting between these two teams, hit a deep three to give him 25 points on the night.

That set up the final play. Henderson appeared caught up with nowhere to go before stepping back and hitting the jumper.

The Jazz attempted an inbound pass toward the basket on their final play, but Clingan intercepted the ball at the rim to end the game.

The Blazers won the final quarter 41-32.

Sharpe scored 27 points, 12 in the fourth, on 11-of-18 shooting. Avdija also had 27 points, 14 in the fourth, to go along with eight rebounds and six assists.

Collin Sexton had 19 points and 11 assists to complement Markkanen. The Jazz shot 50% from three-point range (21 of 42). Portland made 15 of 38 from beyond the arc (39.5%) but outscored the Jazz in the paint 50-36.

“I thought we generated a lot of shots that we wanted, especially when we needed them most,” Bjorkgren said.

As for the revenge factor, it certainly existed.

“We definitely had to get a little payback,” Henderson said.

    WHAT IT MEANS

The Blazers (10-20) defeating the Jazz (7-22) doesn’t mean much in terms of this team’s evolution. Utah isn’t good. But avenging that earlier loss to the Jazz certainly had meaning.

“When we’re playing like that and we’re all connected, that’s fun,” Henderson said.

    BILLUPS OUT

Billups lost his grandmother, Mattie Billups, who died recently at the age of 90.

“Just sending my condolences to Chauncey and his family,” Henderson said. “That was definitely for him.”

Billups could return for Monday night’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Blazers host the Dallas Mavericks (19-11) at 7 p.m. Saturday.

In a thrilling matchup between the Portland Trail Blazers and the Utah Jazz, rookie sensation Scoot Henderson came up clutch with a game-winning shot to secure the victory for his team.

  • Scoot Henderson News: Posts solid numbers in backcourt

Henderson chipped in 14 points (4-11 FG, 2-3 3Pt, 4-4 FT), six rebounds, four assists and one steal over 26 minutes during Monday’s 132-108 loss to the Mavericks.

Henderson was a valuable reserve amid mediocre results from Anfernee Simons and Shaedon Sharpe. Although Simons and Sharpe are locked into first-unit roles, Henderson is proving his worth as a backup. The youngster skipped college and went pro right out of high school, and his coronation as Damian Lillard’s heir apparent was a bit premature. Henderson is a key piece of Portland’s future plans, but he’s only on the cusp of fantasy consideration as he develops with the second unit.

  • Blockbuster Trade Proposal Sees Blazers Move on From Scoot Henderson

Blockbuster Trade Proposal Sees Blazers Move on From Scoot Henderson

One of the teams who are looking to rebuild is the Portland Trail Blazers. Portland has been straddling the line between rebuilding and trying to make the playoffs for a while now. After trading Damian Lillard before the start of last season, they have fully committed to embracing a rebuild.

One of the pieces that they were counting on being a key part of their future is Scoot Henderson. Henderson was drafted third overall in the 2023 NBA Draft. With his combination of size and ferocity, he was expected to quickly become one of the young stars in the NBA.

Instead, things have not gone the way that they expected to. Henderson has not been the kind of player that they hoping for early in his career. As a rookie, Henderson averaged 14 points, 5.4 assists, and 3.1 rebounds per game. He did so on just 38.5 percent shooting from the field.

Henderson was expected to take a leap in his second year. Instead, things have gotten worse. His numbers have taken a dip across the board. He’s averaging just 10.9 points, 4.8 assists, and three rebounds per game. His shooting has somehow not gotten better either, as he is converting just 38.7 percent of his shots. Henderson’s three-point shooting has dipped from 32.5 percent to just 30 percent as well.

It looks like Henderson might be a bust. If that’s the case, the Trail Blazers need to trade him as soon as they can so they can get as much in return for him as possible. This trade proposal could help them do just that.

Blazers receive: Keldon Johnson, a 2025 second-round pick from the Spurs, a 2026 second-round draft pick from the Spurs, and a 2027 second-round draft pick from the Spurs

Jazz receive: Scoot Henderson, Malaki Branham, Sidy Cissoko, and a 2025 first-round draft pick from the Spurs

Spurs receive: Collin Sexton and Matisse Thybulle

The Blazers would get a young wing in Keldon Johnson who has a lot of physical tools. He just needs to be on a decent team to showcase how good he can be. Portland would also be able to get some draft capital to help fund their continued rebuild.

The Jazz would get a lot of young players, including Henderson. They are also a team in rebuild mode. Getting all of those young players, as well as a first-round pick, makes this trade very enticing for them. Meanwhile, the Spurs get two players who can help them win now.

More Trail Blazers news: Blazers Guard Impressed Chauncey Billups Despite Blowout Loss to Spurs

The Portland Trail Blazers are reportedly considering a blockbuster trade proposal that would see them part ways with highly-touted prospect Scoot Henderson. Henderson, who was selected by the Blazers with the 10th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, has shown flashes of potential but has struggled to find consistent playing time in Portland’s crowded backcourt.

The proposed trade would send Henderson to the New Orleans Pelicans in exchange for a package that includes veteran point guard Lonzo Ball and a future first-round draft pick. Ball, who is set to become a free agent this offseason, would provide the Blazers with a much-needed playmaker and defensive presence in the backcourt.

While the trade would be a tough decision for the Blazers, as Henderson has the potential to develop into a star player in the league, it could also be a necessary move to address their current roster needs and improve their chances of contending for a championship.

Stay tuned for more updates on this potential blockbuster trade proposal as the NBA offseason continues to heat up.
