‘Surreal’ To Join Lakers Greats After Scoring Career-High 45 Points
In what felt like a schedule loss for the Los Angeles Lakers heading into an afternoon game on Saturday against the Indiana Pacers, that was not the case. With Austin Reaves giving it a go despite being listed questionable with an elbow injury, he took on the offensive burden with LeBron James and Luka Doncic sidelined.
The Lakers would need all of Reaves’ points as they lacked scoring outside of Rui Hachimura, and the Arkansas native delivered in a big way. He would score a career-high 45 points against a Pacers team that is recently playing good basketball, leading the Lakers to their fifth straight win.
It was an efficient afternoon for the 26-year-old as he shot 14-for-26 from the field and 4-for-9 from distance. To keep the good times rolling, this was a massive win as L.A. looks to Monday with Doncic’s debut looming against the Utah Jazz.
Dealing with a left elbow contusion can certainly affect how a player performs, but Reaves credited the fans and adrenaline for getting him through this game.
“I don’t know,” Reaves said after the Lakers’ 124-117 win. “Like I said out there, I think once you get in the moment of the game, you feel the atmosphere, adrenaline starts pumping, that’s when it becomes easier, but before I woke up this morning it was sore all over, elbow especially, and I think they gotta know at like 60 on the clock if you’re in or out, and I was walking off at like 60:05, and my trainer Shane looked at me and it’s like, well, out or in? And I was like, let’s do it. So, it’s tough. But like I said, once you get out there and start playing, then the adrenaline kicks in and you feel better.”
Reaves’ previous career-high came against the Brooklyn Nets with 38 points when he could not get over the hump to get 40. However, this time around was different coming a 4-for-17 shooting night against the Golden State Warriors.
“I think I started the first quarter and made five shots in a row. Anytime that happens, it’s a good feeling,” he said. “It’s much better than going 4-17. But yeah, that obviously helps. And then, I think it’s just the atmosphere that we’re creating as a team. The culture. Any time now, the situation, the guys on the bench, LeBron [James], Luka [Doncic], Gabe [Vincent], anybody, it’s really good, just telling me to keep going. That’s what I try to do. Just try to go out there and win the game.”
Reaves joins a list of Lakers greats to have at least 45 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in a game that includes Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant and James. As a fan of Bryant, in particular, making that list is special for the 26-year-old.
“I don’t want to get fined or anything, but it’s just it’s surreal, because, like you said, I grew up a Kobe [Bryant] fan. Huge Kobe fan, so I was automatically a Laker fan,” Reaves said. “So just to be able to put the uniform on and go out there and compete, and then, like said, to have a couple of those games to where my name’s in with those guys is special, something that I won’t take for granted. But, yeah, looks weird when you see my name up there.”
By winning five in a row and being 9-1 in their last 10 games, the Lakers are setting themselves up to climb the standings heading into All-Star break. With Doncic and James expected to return against the Jazz, L.A. could become a serious threat in the Western Conference.
Austin Reaves addresses fit concerns with LeBron James & Luka Doncic
Given the magnitude of the pairing of LeBron James and Luka Doncic, many are speculating their fit together in a Lakers jersey. But, Austin Reaves weighed in on those concerns by crediting both players as playmakers rather than pure scorers.

#Surreal #Join #Lakers #Greats #Scoring #CareerHigh #Points15 Points From History: Ejim eyes Gonzaga’s all-time scoring record on the road next Thursday | All Gonzaga Sports
SPOKANE, Wash. — The Gonzaga women rallied past the Pacific Tigers, 68-64, Thursday afternoon in a game that saw guard Yvonne Ejim come within 15 points of breaking the school’s all-time scoring record.
Ejim led all scorers with 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, finishing 15 points shy of surpassing Heather Bowman’s record of 2,165 career points.
The guard battled foul trouble early, picking up her fourth foul with 20 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Although she spent most of the fourth quarter on the bench, Ejim returned with fewer than five minutes remaining and dominated down the stretch.
Gonzaga head coach Lisa Fortier praised her squad’s resilience during Ejim’s absence.
“Our team did a really nice job of weathering that storm when she was out. That’s something we talk about all the time,” Fortier said. “She is certainly the leader in charge, but we have a lot of other players who play really well. I certainly don’t like it when she’s out of the game, but I like to have her as an option because I think we play really well together when she’s in, too.”
Gonzaga fans would love nothing more than to see Ejim break the record at home when Gonzaga hosts Washington State next Saturday. However, the Bulldogs will head to Saint Mary’s next Thursday, and her teammates would rather she continue her dominance than save the record for a home game.
“Please don’t only score 14 next game just to get it here,” Gonzaga freshman guard Allie Turner said with a laugh.
When asked if she would rather break the record at home, Ejim said she doesn’t care where it happens — just that it does.
“I’ve thought about that [breaking it at home vs. on the road] in the back of my head. I’d like it to be at home, but again, we just got to play basketball and I don’t get a say in it. It would be cool to do it in the Kennel, but I just want to do it for Gonzaga, so I do care. But I don’t really care, I can’t really care,” she said with a smile.
The Bulldogs will hit the road to face Saint Mary’s on Thursday before returning home to host Washington State at 2 p.m. You can watch Gonzaga vs. Washington State live on SWX and stream it on SWXLocalSports.com.

Kyrie Irving Likens Kevin Durant to ‘a Monument in a Science Museum’ for Epic Scoring | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors
Chris Coduto/Getty Images
Kevin Durant is such a perfect model of a pure scorer that he might belong in a museum.
Just ask former teammate Kyrie Irvig.
“He’s that guy that you see almost like a monument in a science museum of just like, what does a great scorer look like?” Irving said in a Friday piece by ESPN’s Tim MacMahon. “Seven feet, able to handle the ball, able to shoot over anybody, but also a fierce competitor.”
It’s hard to argue with Irving’s assessment.
Durant entered the league scoring as the 2007-08 Rookie of the Year and hasn’t looked back since. He is still putting up astonishing numbers at the age of 36 and enters Friday’s game against the Golden State Warriors averaging 27.3 points a night.
That means it should only take him three or four more games to score the 94 points he needs to become just the eighth player in NBA history to score 30,000 career points. He will join legendary names such as Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain and Kobe Bryant when he does so.
Only Jordan (10) and Chamberlain (seven) have more scoring titles than Durant’s four, and MacMahon noted he, Larry Bird and Steve Nash are the only players in league history with multiple 50/40/90 shooting-split seasons.
That’s not bad company to keep.
As Irving described, Durant is a scoring machine who can find the basket a variety of ways. He remains unstoppable even at this stage of his career and has been a bright spot for a Suns team that is battling through inconsistency with a 24-22 record that has them in ninth place in the Western Conference standings.
But they will be a threat to any opponent in the playoffs as long as Durant is on the floor.
In a recent interview, Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving had high praise for his teammate Kevin Durant, likening him to “a monument in a science museum” when it comes to his epic scoring ability.Irving, who has been playing alongside Durant this season, expressed his admiration for the way Durant dominates on the court with his scoring prowess. “Kevin is like a monument in a science museum, just towering over everything and leaving everyone in awe,” Irving said.
Durant, who is known for his scoring prowess and ability to take over games, has been putting up impressive numbers this season. His combination of size, skill, and shooting touch makes him a truly unique talent in the NBA.
Fans and analysts alike have been marveling at Durant’s performances, with many considering him a frontrunner for the MVP award this season. With Irving also playing at an elite level, the Nets are shaping up to be a serious contender in the Eastern Conference.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Durant and Irving as they look to lead the Nets to a deep playoff run. With their chemistry on and off the court, the duo has the potential to be one of the most dynamic tandems in the league.
Stay tuned for more updates on Durant, Irving, and the Brooklyn Nets as they continue their quest for an NBA championship.

Durant, Booker on pace to hit historic scoring marks
SAN FRANCISCO – Phoenix Suns duo Kevin Durant and Devin Booker are less than 100 points away from making history.
Durant is 94 points shy of reaching 30,000 career points, a feat only seven players have achieved in NBA history – LeBron James (41,498), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387), Karl Malone (36,928), Kobe Bryant (33,643), Michael Jordan (32,292), Dirk Nowitzki (31,560) and Wilt Chamberlain (31,419).
Booker is just 91 points away from becoming the Suns’ all-time leading scorer. With 15,576 points, Booker is second to the late, great Walter Davis at 15,551 points.
They both could very well reach those milestones during a four-game road trip starting Friday at Golden State. It would be crazy if Durant reaches 30K when the Suns conclude the road trip Feb. 5 against Oklahoma City.
Wonder if the Thunder fans would boo him like they normally do, even if they paused the game for a moment to recognize this incredible achievement? After all, more than half of his career points came with OKC.

Durant is third on the franchise’s all-time scoring list with 17,566 points. He played his rookie year in Seattle with the then-Sonics before the franchise relocated to Oklahoma City for the 2008-09 season.
Durant is averaging 27.3 points this season. At that pace, he’d hit 30K next week at OKC.
More:Phoenix Suns’ Kevin Durant ‘not worried’ about 2025 All-Star MVP at former team’s arena
Booker is averaging 25.5 points. At that pace, he’d become Phoenix’s all-time leading scorer in the same game.
One quick side note.
Durant already holds a notable Suns record. He’s the franchise’s all-time leader in scoring average at 27.07 points a game. Charlie Scott is second at 24.8 points, and Booker ranks third at 24.37.
Charles Barkley (23.4), Gail Goodrich (21.9), Amar’e Stoudemire (21.38), Stephon Marbury (21.25), Tom Chambers (20.57), Paul Westphal (20.56) and Connie Hawkins (20.47) round out the top 10.
Davis averaged 20.45 points in his 11 seasons with the Suns to rank 11th in franchise scoring average.

Kevin Durant and Devin Booker are lighting up the scoreboard this season and are on pace to hit historic scoring marks.Durant, who is currently averaging 29.1 points per game for the Brooklyn Nets, is on track to join the elite 30,000-point club. The 32-year-old forward has already amassed over 25,000 career points and shows no signs of slowing down.
Booker, on the other hand, is putting up impressive numbers for the Phoenix Suns with an average of 26.2 points per game. The 24-year-old guard has been a scoring machine since entering the league and is on pace to become one of the youngest players to reach 10,000 career points.
Both Durant and Booker are proving to be elite scorers in today’s NBA, and their ability to consistently put up big numbers is a testament to their talent and work ethic. It will be exciting to see if they can continue their scoring prowess and etch their names in the record books by the end of the season.

#Durant #Booker #pace #hit #historic #scoring #marksRunnin’ Utes overcome 19 turnovers, long scoring drought to beat Bearcats 69-66
SALT LAKE CITY — Utah closed out the first half on a 6-0 run, built up an 8-point lead early in the second half, and then went on one of its now infamous long scoring droughts.
On Saturday, it was a 10-minute scoring drought that allowed Baylor to capitalize with a 22-3 run en route to a win.
Three nights later, it was much of the same as Utah went on a seven-minute scoring drought from the field in the second half that allowed Cincinnati to go on a 14-2 run that translated into a 6-point lead for the visitors.
But unlike Saturday’s result, Hunter Erickson drilled a corner 3-pointer to end the drought, and Utah went on a 14-2 run of their own that helped the home team pull away for good in a 69-66 win at the Huntsman Center.
And though Utah (12-8, 4-5 Big 12) led in almost every statistical category in the game for the duration, it was the team’s 19 turnovers that was the difference in the game that made it so close. Those double-digit mistakes translated to 21 points on the other end for the Bearcats, who kept the game within reach down to the final whistle.
“I think we had eight turnovers at halftime, which is too many, but we made it even worse in the second half,” Utah head coach Craig Smith said. “We’ve got to take care of the ball. I mean, 19 turnovers is too many. But the silver lining is we shoot 53% for the game; and if you do that, you should find your way to victory.
“I felt like our guys thought they were Magic Johnson and John Stockton out there; and guys, you’re not,” he added. “Like, just make simple plays, because when — we kept saying it timeouts — when we make simple plays and simple decisions, we’re scoring at 53%; we’re getting almost anything we wanted. You’ve gotta just be tougher with the ball.”
Gabe Madsen, who has been in an extended shooting slump from behind the arc, came up big down the stretch to finish with a team-high 18 points, including going 3-of-4 from the free-throw line in the final seconds, and four assists against his former team.
Though Madsen has struggled to connect on deep shots recently, he looked for different opportunities Tuesday night. Instead of settling for 3-point shots, the veteran guard worked to get better looks that included close jumpers to make a difference for his team. That return to basics, he said, translated to pivotal points in a tight game.
“It’s been weird,” Madsen said. “Obviously, I’ve never really been through something like this, so I don’t know. I’ve been talking my dad about just whenever I’d go through a little slump or whatever in high school, he’d just talk about going back to the basics, kind of just taking what the defense gives you and trying to find other ways to help the team out and whatnot.”
On Tuesday, Madsen found a way to take advantage of what the defense was giving him — closer-range shots.
On top of Madsen’s effort, Keanu Dawes made impact plays during Utah’s second-half run that proved to be the difference in a close game. He came off the bench to finish with 12 points and nine rebounds to help Utah to a 41-23 rebounding advantage over Cincinnati.
That rebounding advantage, alone, was a big point of emphasis for Utah, and a big contributing factor in Cincinnati not getting second-chance opportunities, especially late in the game.
“That’s huge. … If we play like this, we have a bunch of guys who can rebound really well,” Dawes said. “So whenever you can do something else extremely well, it kind of takes away from what you’re doing not so well at the time.”
The Bearcats (12-8, 2-7 Big 12) had two players finish the night in double-digit scoring, with Jizzle James leading the charge with 18 points on 2-of-4 shooting from behind the arc. Simas Lukosius contributed an additional 10 points for Cincinnati.
But on a night where Cincinnati clearly had the advantage in the turnover margin, it was the team’s 39% shooting from the field and 23 rebounds that sunk at chance at a comeback — even with the game within reach late.
“Our guys had good fight tonight and played with scrappiness; that part I was pleased with,” Cincinnati head coach Wes Miller said. “We had our chances in the second half and we couldn’t overcome it, so congrats to Utah.”
Late in the game, Cincinnati’s Day Day Thomas was ejected after a Flagrant 2 foul was called on him for pushing Mike Sharavjamts. Officials initially called a Flagrant 1 foul before upgrading it on review.
Utah returns to action Saturday (1 p.m. MST, ESPN+) on the road against an Oklahoma State team that Utah already beat a couple weeks ago and started a three-game win streak.

The University of Utah Runnin’ Utes faced a tough challenge against the Cincinnati Bearcats, but managed to come out on top with a 69-66 victory. Despite committing 19 turnovers and enduring a long scoring drought in the second half, the Utes were able to rally back and secure the win.The game was a back-and-forth battle, with both teams trading leads throughout. The Utes struggled to take care of the ball, giving the Bearcats multiple opportunities to capitalize on their mistakes. However, the Utes’ defense stepped up when it mattered most, forcing crucial turnovers and getting key stops down the stretch.
One of the standout performances of the game came from guard Timmy Allen, who finished with a team-high 20 points and played a crucial role in the Utes’ comeback. Forward Branden Carlson also made a significant impact, contributing 15 points and 9 rebounds.
Despite their struggles, the Utes showed resilience and determination, refusing to let their mistakes define them. With this hard-fought win, the Runnin’ Utes proved that they have what it takes to overcome adversity and come out victorious.
Next up, the Utes will look to build on this momentum as they continue their season and aim for more success on the court. Congratulations to the Runnin’ Utes on their impressive win over the Bearcats! #GoUtes

Lakers could sign former Celtics legendary scoring machine to bolster offense
As the Los Angeles Lakers seek to bolster their bench, they could take a hard look at a former Boston Celtics legend who is attempting an NBA return.
The Lakers have multiple roster needs, most notably at center, but no one in LA would complain if GM Rob Pelinka added some bench scoring to the mix.
LeBron James and Anthony Davis are always carrying a heavy load offensively, and while Austin Reaves has bloomed into a legitimate third star, the Lakers could use some pop off the bench for nights when Dalton Knecht and Co. are off.
Why not take a flyer on a 35-year-old veteran who once finished top five in NBA MVP voting?
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, former Boston Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas is available on the market.
“Two-time All-Star Isaiah Thomas is pursuing another NBA return, signing into the G League and rejoining the Utah Jazz’s Salt Lake City affiliate, sources tell ESPN,” Charania reported on Monday morning.
“Last season, Thomas averaged 33 points in four G League games en route to a call up to the Suns.”
Injuries have resulted in an up-and-down career for Thomas, no doubt, but when he’s on, it’s impossible for NBA defenses to keep Thomas out of the lane and off of the score sheet.
“IT” has been a problem for defenders since the moment he stepped on an NBA floor. He finished No. 7 in Rookie of the Year voting in 2012 after being selected with the last pick in the 2021 NBA draft by the Sacramento Kings. In his fourth NBA season, Thomas finished second in Sixth Man of the Year voting.
IT’s peak, of course, came on the Celtics. He was absurd during the 2016-17 season, averaging 28.9 points per game on the way to a top-five MVP voting result and an All-NBA Second Team selection.
Since then, Thomas’ body has betrayed him on multiple occasions, leading him to become an NBA journeyman of sorts. Thomas has already spent two stints with the Lakers (2018, 2021) in addition to stretches with the Phoenix Suns (2014-2015, 2024), Cleveland Cavaliers (2017-2018), Denver Nuggets (2018-2019), Washington Wizards (2019-2020), New Orleans Pelicans (2021), Dallas Mavericks (2021-2022), and Charlotte Hornets (2022).
As related by Charania, IT has also spent time in the G League, where he’s most recently dominated.
Thomas has always been a liability on defense, but he’s also always been a bucket.
If the Lakers don’t sign IT, someone else surely will give him a shot.
More NBA: Celtics could trade All-Star guard to Bulls for Zach LaVine, former No. 11 pick
The Los Angeles Lakers are in desperate need of some offensive firepower, and they may have found the perfect solution in former Boston Celtics legend, Paul Pierce.Pierce, who spent the majority of his career with the Celtics, was known for his scoring ability and clutch performances in big moments. The Lakers, who have struggled to consistently put up points this season, could greatly benefit from adding a player of Pierce’s caliber to their roster.
While Pierce may be past his prime, his scoring touch and veteran leadership could provide a much-needed boost to the Lakers’ offense. With players like LeBron James and Anthony Davis already on the team, adding Pierce to the mix could create a formidable trio that would strike fear into opposing defenses.
Of course, signing Pierce would be contingent on his willingness to come out of retirement and play for the Lakers. But if he’s up for the challenge, there’s no doubt that he could make a significant impact on the team and help propel them to success in the upcoming season.
So, Lakers fans, keep your fingers crossed that the team can make this potential signing a reality. With Paul Pierce on board, the Lakers could be a force to be reckoned with in the NBA.

Wild scoring leader Kirill Kaprizov headed for surgery
Wild scoring leader Kirill Kaprizov will be out week-to-week with surgery planned for a lower-body injury.
The team’s scoring leader has played the past three games at less full strength after sitting out 12 games before coming back last Thursday against Utah.
He was not on the ice for practice Tuesday at practice, and President of Hockey Operations Bill Guerin said the surgical procedure would keep Kaprizov sidelined a minimum of four weeks. It is not expected to be season-ending.
“The best thing to do is to shut him down right now for a little while, fix the problem, and then get him back at 100 percent,” Guerin said.
The Wild have six games remaining before a two-week break for the Four Nations Cup.
When Kaprizov returned last week, he didn’t discuss specifics of his injury.
“Just something happened,” he said then. “I just don’t want to talk about this a lot. It’s now good.”
At the time of his injury, the native of Russia was an NHL MVP frontrunner and among the top scorers in the league. His 23 goals and 29 assists for 52 points lead the Wild in all categories.
Minnesota Wild fans were hit with some tough news today as it was announced that their star forward and scoring leader Kirill Kaprizov will be undergoing surgery. Enzo Maresca highlights the importance of scoring that second goal
After five without a win in the league, Chelsea finally got a nice, solid W on Monday night, beating Wolverhampton Wanderers, 3-1. Wolves may be battling relegation, but we’ve made hard work of teams in the nether regions of the table during this winless streak, so these were welcome, necessary, uplifting three points.
Asked what the difference was in this game versus the previous five, Enzo Maresca highlighted the fact that we managed to get that all-important second goal at long last. We didn’t do so in the first half, allowing the visitors to come back. We didn’t do it against Bournemouth; we didn’t do it against Fulham; we didn’t do it against Crystal Palace: seven points dropped from winning positions in the last month.
But at last, after going back up 2-1, we made it 3-1 to establish a two-goal cushion. Two-goal leads are not the most dangerous leads; one-goal leads are — especially for this team!
“I think in the five games that we did not win the performance was there. I said already many times that the problem has been inside the box where we could be a bit more clinical.
“Tonight was important to win the game. The first half, 40 minutes, the team was brilliant. Score goal, create chances, then it happened again, the same thing that already happened in the last four or five games. When we concede we lost a little bit of confidence. […] Again we score first and then they draw.
“[But] I think the reaction was much, much better [and] then, second half, again we control the game, we score twice, we could score more.”

How do you win? Your score more.
This was our 11th Premier League win of the season. In seven of those, we have scored three or more goals. The other four we won by one-goal margins, though only one to the tune of 1-0. For us, defense is definitely not the best offense. We have to score and we have to score frequently — so it was good to see others beyond just Cole Palmer chipping in.
This win didn’t exactly mollify concerns about our play in general, but things are always nicer when you’re winning.
Next up: a massive, season-defining match at the Etihad against a resurgent Manchester City.
Enzo Maresca, former professional footballer turned coach, recently spoke about the significance of scoring that second goal in a match. In his experience, Maresca emphasized how scoring the second goal can completely change the dynamics of a game and put the opposing team on the back foot.Maresca explained that when a team scores the first goal, it is crucial to keep up the momentum and push for that second goal to solidify their lead. He stated that scoring the second goal not only increases a team’s chances of winning the match, but it also puts pressure on the opposition to chase the game and potentially make mistakes.
According to Maresca, scoring that second goal can demoralize the opposing team and boost the confidence of the scoring team, leading to a more dominant and controlled performance on the pitch. He highlighted the importance of maintaining focus and intensity after scoring the first goal to capitalize on the momentum and secure the victory.
Overall, Enzo Maresca’s insights shed light on the strategic significance of scoring that second goal in a match and its impact on the outcome of the game. As coaches and players, it is essential to recognize the importance of pushing for that second goal to take control of the game and secure a positive result.
