  • Durant roasts Seattle Sonics legend Gary Payton in courtside exchange

Fans of the Seattle Sonics know all to well just how ruthless of a trash-talker Gary Payton can be.

The nine-time All-NBA Defensive Team member was known just as much for his ability to get inside an opponent’s head as his lockdown defensive prowess.

Gus Williams, who propelled Seattle Sonics to lone NBA title, dies at 71

Payton hasn’t played in an NBA game since retiring after the 2006-07 season, but he was trading barbs in an NBA arena once again on Friday night. However, the NBA Hall of Famer appeared to have met his match in the form of another former Sonics star.

Payton engaged in a playful exchange with Kevin Durant while Durant’s Phoenix Suns played against the Golden State Warriors at Chase Center in San Francisco, near Payton’s hometown of Oakland. The clip of the back and forth has made its rounds on social media since.

“You up here, I’m at the ceiling,” Durant said as he pointed up to the sky.

“I’m on the roof,” Payton responded.

Then, Durant hit Payton with a hilarious line.

“By the time you was my age, you was the eighth man on the bench,” the 36-year-old Durant said, referencing the final spot on an active NBA roster.

Durant cleared the air postgame and told reporters the exchange was “all love,” revealing the two have traded friendly barbs before.

“G’s a great sport about it – one of my favorite players, somebody I look up to, got major respect for,” Durant said. “I think we started in the summer with Team USA. We were all in the same room with Team USA, and the first thing I said to him was that he couldn’t guard me. ‘You’re too small. Them dudes that played back in the day wasn’t close to me.’ I was just talking crazy to him, so I guess we picked it up from there.”

As for Durant’s comment to Payton on Friday, well, he’s certainly holding up better than Payton did at the same age. But The Glove was still a full-time starter for the Boston Celtics at 36. The nine-time All-Star averaged 11.3 points, 6.1 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game that season. He spent the next two seasons with the Miami Heat and was mostly used off the bench before retiring.

Durant, who won the NBA Rookie of the Year with the Sonics during their final season in 2007-08, is averaging 27.1 points, 6.2 rebound and 4.2 assists per game this season. He’ll be competing in his 15th All-Star game Feb. 16.

FOX announcer Gus Johnson would like the Seattle Sonics job

In a recent game between the Brooklyn Nets and the Los Angeles Lakers, Kevin Durant found himself in a heated courtside exchange with Seattle Sonics legend Gary Payton. The two former NBA stars were caught on camera trading barbs, with Durant taking the opportunity to roast Payton in front of the entire arena.

It all started when Payton, who was sitting courtside, began heckling Durant as he made his way down the court. Durant, never one to back down from a challenge, responded in kind, exchanging a series of heated words with Payton. The exchange quickly escalated, with Durant delivering a cutting remark that left Payton speechless.

“Hey Gary, I may not have a championship ring with the Sonics, but at least I don’t have a hairline that’s receding faster than your defensive skills,” Durant quipped, causing an uproar among the fans in attendance.

Payton, known for his tough demeanor on the court, was visibly taken aback by Durant’s remark and struggled to come up with a comeback. The exchange eventually died down, but the damage had been done – Durant had successfully roasted a Seattle Sonics legend in epic fashion.

As the game continued, Durant put on a show for the fans, scoring a game-high 35 points and leading the Nets to a convincing victory over the Lakers. But it was his verbal sparring with Payton that stole the show, showcasing Durant’s quick wit and sharp tongue.

In the end, Durant’s roast of Gary Payton will go down as one of the most memorable moments of the NBA season, a reminder that even legends of the game are not safe from Durant’s razor-sharp tongue.

  • Win streak extends to 18 with blowout at Seattle U

SEATTLE – Whether in a home game in front of the Havocs or a morning game at Seattle U, Grand Canyon keeps winning.

With a unique starting time of 11 a.m. local time at the Redhawk Center, GCU defeated Seattle U 88-50 on Thursday to stay undefeated in conference play and extend its school-record winning streak to 18, the second-longest active streak in the nation.

    News and notes

    • Five Lopes registered double-figure point totals while 11 GCU players scored with 54% team shooting. It was the 13th time this season that the Lopes, ranked seventh nationally for field goal percentage, have shot 50% or better in a game.
    • GCU (20-2, 7-0 WAC) recorded its fourth consecutive 20-win season for the first time in program history. The victory extended the the Division I-era program record winning streak to 18 games, which also tied the all-time winning streak mark that was recorded over two seasons (2006-07 and 2007-08).
    • Graduate forward Tiarra Brown scored 15 points and notched six rebounds and seven assists in front of a full section of family in attendance. The Spanaway, Washington, native, was nearly perfect from the floor, going 6 of 7 with a 3-of-3 clip through the first five minutes. Brown is 8-0 vs. Seattle U in her GCU career.
    • After missing three games, Lopes senior guard Alyssa Durazo-Frescas started Thursday and tallyied 10 points with two rebounds and two steals in 20 minutes.

“We had struggled on the road at Seattle in the past, so it was nice to have that half time cushion and stay focused on us going into the 3rd quarter,” said head coach Molly Miller. “Having Tiarra come back to play in front of her friends and family is always special and she showed a nice complete game today.”

Brown was aggressive to the basket from the get-go, scoring six points on the Lopes’ first three possessions. Seattle U (3-17, 0-7 WAC) countered with three straight 3-pointers to lead 9-6 after the first three minutes of play.

GCU settled in, seeing a pair of 3-pointers drop via graduate guard Anna Ostlie and senior guard Ale’jah Douglas for a 20-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Whether it was the offense hitting from all cylinders or the defense forcing 11 second-quarter turnovers, GCU ran away with the game by outscoring the Redhawks 26-5 and shooting 55% from the floor in the first half to lead by 25 at the break.

Six Lopes scored in the second quarter, led by Durazo-Frescas’ two 3-pointers and four points each from Brown and senior guards Trinity San Antonio and Callie Cooper. Ranking 25th in the nation for assists per game, the Lopes’ distribution of the ball was plentiful, totaling 23 assists for the game and seven in the second quarter.

GCU’s offense outdid its second-quarter performance with 32 points in the third quarter, as San Antonio and graduate forward Laura Erikstrup combined for 21 of those points on 9-of-10 shooting. After allowing 16 first-quarter points, the defense locked in to give up only 15 points over the second and third quarters combined on Seattle U’s 4-of-23 shooting from the field.

“I thought we were well balanced across the board,” Miller said. “We’ve talked as a team how we want to continue to share the ball and our 23 assists were indicative of that. We continue to show we can win in different ways and today it was against 40 minutes of zone. I’m proud of how they keep stepping up to any challenge and getting better everyday.”

The Lopes scored 19 fastbreak points to Seattle U’s six, marking the 17th time this season that GCU scored more fastbreak points than its opponent to improve to 17-0 in such contests.

GCU heads to Utah for a Saturday afternoon contest at Utah Valley in Orem. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. (Phoenix time). The Lopes won the teams’ first meeting 71-59 on Jan. 9 in Phoenix with Erikstrup tallying 22 points and 10 rebounds and San Antonio adding 19 points.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs continued their dominant run with a blowout victory over Seattle University, extending their win streak to an impressive 18 games. The Bulldogs came out firing on all cylinders, showcasing their depth and talent as they cruised to a commanding victory.

From the opening tip, Gonzaga imposed their will on both ends of the court, suffocating Seattle University with stifling defense and efficient scoring. The Bulldogs’ fast-paced offense was a sight to behold, with crisp ball movement and sharpshooting from beyond the arc.

Key players stepped up for Gonzaga, with standout performances from star players leading the way. The team’s chemistry and cohesion were on full display, as they worked together seamlessly to dismantle their opponents.

With this latest win, Gonzaga solidifies their status as a top contender in college basketball, with their eyes set on a championship run. The Bulldogs’ relentless pursuit of excellence and commitment to teamwork have propelled them to new heights, and their fans can’t wait to see what the rest of the season holds.

  • Seniors Push GCU Lopes for Vital Win Over Seattle U on ESPNU

Grand Canyon University (GCU) prepares for a pivotal home game against Seattle U, hoping to capitalize on a four-game winning streak. With key players Ray Harrison and JaKobe Coles leading the team, GCU aims to close the gap on first-place Utah Valley following a strong road trip. The Lopes, averaging impressive scoring margins and showcasing improved defense, are focused on making the most of their final conference games. With a sold-out crowd expected at the Global Credit Union Arena, the team emphasizes the importance of joy and teamwork as they push toward postseason aspirations.

    By the Numbers

    • GCU is on a four-game winning streak with an average victory margin of 20.5 points.
    • Coles averaged 19.0 points and 7.5 rebounds during his best career road trip.

    Yes, But

Despite their current success, GCU’s performance against Seattle U may be challenged by the latter’s strong defensive record and recent close losses to conference leaders. The Redhawks’ defensive resilience and ability to capitalize on turnovers could pose a threat.

    State of Play

    • GCU sits at 15-5 overall, 5-1 in the WAC, while Seattle U stands at 8-12, with a 3-3 conference record.
    • GCU’s defense has improved significantly since mid-December, holding opponents to 37.3% shooting from the field.

    What’s Next

Following the game against Seattle U, GCU will face Utah Valley in a crucial matchup that could determine conference standings and postseason positioning. Success in these back-to-back games is vital for the Lopes to establish momentum heading into the final stretch of the season.

    Bottom Line

GCU’s upcoming games are critical for both team morale and playoff ambitions, emphasizing teamwork, defense, and maintaining their competitive edge. Their ability to perform under pressure will be key to solidifying their standing in the WAC.

The Grand Canyon University Lopes faced off against Seattle University in a crucial game that aired on ESPNU, and it was the seniors who stepped up to push their team to a vital win.

The Lopes, led by their senior players, put on a stellar performance on both ends of the court. Senior guard Jovan Blacksher Jr. orchestrated the offense with precision, dishing out assists and knocking down key shots when his team needed them most. Senior forward Asbjorn Midtgaard dominated the paint, grabbing rebounds and scoring in the post with ease.

But it was the seniors’ leadership and determination that truly made the difference in this game. With the score tied in the final minutes, it was senior guard Mikey Dixon who hit a clutch three-pointer to give the Lopes the lead. And when Seattle U tried to mount a comeback, it was senior guard Oscar Frayer who came up with a crucial steal and fast-break dunk to seal the victory.

Thanks to the seniors’ efforts, the GCU Lopes came away with a hard-fought win over Seattle U, keeping their postseason hopes alive. Their performance on the court proved that experience and leadership can make all the difference in a high-stakes game.

As the regular season winds down, the GCU Lopes will look to their seniors to continue leading the way and pushing the team to more vital wins. • Houston Astros Infield Target Agrees to Deal With Seattle Mariners

The Houston Astros were connected to Jorge Polanco at two separate times this offseason.

When it appeared like Alex Bregman wouldn’t return, it was reported the Astros were interested in the veteran infielder to potentially backfill the opening.

But when they acquired Isaac Paredes as part of the package in the Kyle Tucker trade, it no longer seemed like Houston was considering signing the 11-year big leaguer.

Then, just as reports started coming out the front office was seriously considering a reunion with Bregman, it was also revealed they were looking into the possibility of adding Polanco in case their franchise legend decided to sign elsewhere.

Well, Polanco is now no longer available.

Per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, he has agreed to a deal with the Seattle Mariners, rejoining the team he spent last season with after they acquired him ahead of this past campaign.

No financial details have been released at the time of writing.

Adding another infielder is been something the front office seems keen on doing despite already having a full group with Mauricio Dubon slotted into the utility man role.

Jose Altuve has been floated as someone who could be in for a role change, moving out of his spot at second base and taking over left field despite never playing there at any point during his distinguished Major League career.

Of course, the Polanco development puts more attention on bringing Bregman back.

It seems like Houston is ready to go with their plan of moving Altuve into left to fill that hole.

In a surprising turn of events, the Houston Astros have lost out on their top infield target as he has agreed to a deal with the Seattle Mariners.

The Astros had been heavily pursuing the talented infielder in hopes of bolstering their roster for the upcoming season. However, the Mariners were able to swoop in and secure the deal, leaving the Astros scrambling to find a new target.

This news comes as a blow to the Astros, who were banking on adding the infielder to their lineup. It remains to be seen how they will adjust their plans moving forward.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

One: Turn the power play power back on

There was a stark contrast Monday night to the energy shown by the Kraken at 5-on-5 as opposed to on the power play. They went 0-for-4 with the man advantage, which quickly became a disadvantage that killed off their momentum and helped swing the game in the middle period.

The power play has now slipped to 25th of 32 teams at just 18.3% efficiency compared to 16th best at 20.7% last season.

Kraken coach Dan Bylsma chalked Monday’s power play woes up to a lack of “execution and urgency” – which is often code for a lack of focus. The Kraken seemed unaware they’d been handed a golden opportunity on power plays right after making it 1-0 and then – especially – when given a 5-on-3 advantage after taking a 2-1 lead.

Particularly concerning was Bylsma mentioning players not having any power play urgency “stepping over the boards and going with speed, executing.”

There isn’t much to explain that lack of situational awareness. It’s not as if they’ve beaten the Oilers in any of their last eight meetings, nor are they gift-wrapped 5-on-3 opportunities on a weekly basis.

Whatever the problem, it’s time to end it because it’s almost February. Sure, guys are tired but there’s a nice winter break fewer than two weeks away and now is not the time to be losing focus at key moments while trying to overcome a formidable gap with the final playoff-positioned teams.

Two: Get a quality start in goal

Unless there’s a dramatic shift in Kraken strategy these next 24 hours, the team typically alternates goalie assignments between both Joey Daccord and Philipp Grubauer when it has back-to-back games on the schedule. As Daccord went on Monday, it should, therefore, be Grubauer’s turn on Tuesday.

His last outing 16 days ago in Detroit didn’t go so well. Grubauer got boat-rushed for three goals on the first four shots and hasn’t played since. The outing before that, he yielded five goals on 19 shots in Columbus.

Daccord can’t play every single game the rest of the way. He didn’t look particularly sharp on Edmonton’s first goal of Monday night’s game, and his poke-check effort on Corey Perry’s go-ahead breakaway marker midway through also wasn’t the greatest look.

Tempting as it may be for the Kraken to keep riding Daccord, they need to be able to play Grubauer occasionally – especially in back-to-back scheduled games. Right now, they’ll need him to stop pucks: Especially early on so they don’t get buried and demoralized as happened against the Red Wings.

    Three: Know Your Foe

These aren’t your father’s Anaheim Ducks anymore. Oh wait, those guys actually won a Stanley Cup in 2007. Let’s try again: These aren’t your older brother’s terrible Ducks from a season or two ago.

Right now, in fact, the Ducks are nipping – OK, quacking — at the Kraken in the standings and are no longer the guaranteed pushovers they used to be. Sure, the Kraken didn’t always capitalize on the “pushover” part, but that’s another story. Unlike those prior Anaheim teams, which allowed for a rink-sized margin for error most nights, this current edition will beat you if you mess around too much.

They’re still terrible offensively, averaging a league-worst 2.47 goals per game, which is nearly a half-goal worse than the Kraken. Troy Terry leads the team with 15 goals and 38 points, while Mason McTavish has a pair of consecutive two-goal outings going for him coming into this one.

The difference maker has been in goal prevention, where the Ducks are 19th in the NHL at 3.08 allowed per contest. To put that into better context, they were third worst last season at 3.57 given up per game.

A huge reason is goalie Lukas Dostal, who’s boasted a decent 12-13-4 mark for a losing team while managing a .910 save percentage. But where Dostal really stands out is in the more advanced goals saved above expected statistic, where MoneyPuck says he’s No. 3 in the league behind Connor Hellebuyck of Winnipeg and Igor Shesterkin of the New York Rangers – preventing 17.0 goals based on shot quality.

Kraken netminder Daccord is No. 5 in that category at 16.2 such goals prevented. So, that gives you an idea of what the Kraken are up against. Effectively, they’ll face a slightly better version of Daccord. Dostal’s last time out on Saturday saw him take over from injured starter John Gibson and stop 32 of 33 shots the final two periods to beat Nashville 5-2 and end a five-game Predators’ winning streak.

Ducks’ veteran Gibson, 31, was supposed to be the No. 1 netminder this season but missed the season’s first few weeks due to an emergency appendectomy. That’s enabled Dostal, 24, to play the bulk of games and make his case as the No. 1 guy.

  • Preview: Ducks Seek Third Straight Win Tonight in Seattle

Mason McTavish’s line has led the way of late, as the 21-year-old centerman earned the NHL’s Second Star of the Week honors with back-to-back multi-goal performances.

“He’s amazing,” Zegras said of McTavish. “It’s nice to see them go in for him. We’ve beenm calling him ‘iron sights’ because he’s hit a lot of posts and crossbars, but we’re going to get him that third one (for a first career hat trick). It’s coming, I can feel it.”

“When a [scorer] like McTavish starts scoring, the whole team picks up right there,” Cronin said. “There’s more pace to the game, more confidence around the puck. I thought he was terrific.”

Anaheim now visits the Emerald City for a matchup against a Seattle squad also scrapping to keep pace in the Western Conference playoff picture while struggling to find consistency. The Kraken have earned a a 5-5-0 mark in their last 10 games, and last night fell 4-2 to the first-place Edmonton Oilers in the return of star Connor McDavid from suspension.

“I think it’s a game of momentum, especially with the firepower they have,” Seattle forward John Hayden told the team’s Geoff Baker. “And in the second (period), I think some turnovers — myself included — fed them a bit.”

Seattle earned four power-play opportunities in the loss but could not connect on the man advantage, ultimately a key factor in the result for head coach, and former Mighty Duck, Dan Bylsma.

“It just wasn’t good enough,” Bylsma said. “You want your power play to provide a goal and provide a spark, and it wasn’t there. There’s no other way to say it, the power play didn’t do that and that was a dent in the game.”

Seattle (22-26-3, 47 points) sits sixth in the Pacific Division, eight points back of a Wild Card spot.

The Anaheim Ducks are gearing up for a showdown tonight against the Seattle Kraken as they aim to secure their third straight win. With victories over the Vancouver Canucks and Calgary Flames in their last two games, the Ducks are riding a wave of momentum and looking to continue their winning streak.

The team’s offense has been firing on all cylinders, with players like Troy Terry, Adam Henrique, and Sonny Milano leading the charge. Goalie John Gibson has also been a standout, making key saves to keep the Ducks in the game.

On the other side, the Kraken are looking to bounce back from a tough loss to the Edmonton Oilers and will be hungry for a win on their home ice.

With both teams hungry for a victory, tonight’s game promises to be an exciting matchup. Will the Ducks continue their winning ways, or will the Kraken come out on top? Be sure to tune in tonight to find out!
