  • Seth Meyers, Kenan Thompson, Kate McKinnon Share SNL Secrets (Exclusive)

It’s early January, and six legendary comics from the most legendary sketch comedy show in television history are together in Manhattan studio. And they are celebrating the birthday of Saturday Night Live.

Once Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, Seth Meyers, Molly Shannon, Kenan Thompson, and Bowen Yang finish their photo shoot and impromptu dance party, they assemble, and two topics quickly emerge: Lorne Michaels, the creator and executive producer of SNL (Michaels’s mantra, “The show doesn’t go on because it’s ready, it goes on because it’s 11:30,” is remembered) and, well, love. “We all did this because it’s the greatest job in television,” Shannon says. “Underneath it all is love.”

‘Saturday Night Live’ cast members Kate McKinnon, Bowen Yang, Kenan Thompson, Leslie Jones, Molly Shannon and Seth Meyers on January 13, 2025.

    Mary Ellen Matthews

SNL premiered on NBC in October 1975 and was boundary-breaking and FCC censor-skirting from the start. It also, without question, became a star factory, launching the careers of Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, Tina Fey, Kristen Wiig . . . and, of course, the six sitting down with PEOPLE. Now the show is turning 50, and celebrations and retrospectives are underway: Docs SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night and NBC’s Ladies & Gentlemen . . . 50 Years of SNL Music are now streaming on Peacock; a live music event takes over Radio City Music Hall on Feb. 14, streaming live on Peacock; and SNL’s three-hour anniversary special will be live from Studio 8H on Feb. 16 on NBC and Peacock.

Molly Shannon, Kate McKinnon, Bowen Yang, Kenan Thompson, Seth Meyers, Leslie Jones.

    Mary Ellen Matthews

As the six begin chatting, the love is palpable, the laughs are well-earned, and the up-all-night, swing-hard, fail-big pressure of sketch comedy before a live studio audience — and millions of screens—is recognized as only a very rare group of people can. Here they reflect on their journeys to 30 Rock and the moments, players and characters that paved the way.

    Kenan Thompson.

    Mary Ellen Matthews

You all began, like many, as SNL fans. What cast members first inspired you?

BOWEN YANG My first exposure to the show was Molly and Will [Ferrell] and [Chris] Kattan. And then graduating college, it was Kate and Leslie, Seth and then Kenan being this perfect, constant thing. It’s amazing to have the continuum in this tableau. I’m using so many obnoxious words.

KENAN THOMPSON “Continuum in this tableau.” Well said.

LESLIE JONES [Gilda Radner as] Roseanne Roseannadanna. Chevy Chase falling down the stairs. Garrett Morris. Yeah. I’m old.

KATE MCKINNON I started watching when I was 12. Watching Molly’s characters taught me what I wanted to do, which was to be this full wacky, amazing, joyful odd man out.

MOLLY SHANNON Oh my god, that’s so sweet!

    Molly Shannon.

    Mary Ellen Matthews

Auditions for the show are famously scary — and quiet. What do you remember from yours?

SETH MEYERS I would’ve told you nobody laughs at auditions because nobody laughed at mine, but I was there for Leslie’s.

JONES I was cocky as f—. I walked in there, I was like, “Y’all in the back, move to the front. I don’t perform like that.” And then when I finished I was like, “My name is Leslie Jones. Peace.”

SHANNON I spent all my waitressing money making a five-minute VHS tape. I hired an editor and a guy to shoot it in my little dumpy apartment. I was on a payphone when they said, “Sorry, they passed on your tape.” Then I picked myself back up and worked really hard on my characters. They came back around five years later and asked for a tape again. I was like, “You have to come see my live show.”

YANG At one of my auditions, I was in a silver metallic onesie and Kate was there. She gave me a hug and was like, “You should be so proud of this audition, no matter what happens.”

    Bowen Yang.

    Mary Ellen Matthews

Let’s talk about hosts. Who came in surprisingly prepared?

THOMPSON Melissa McCarthy came in with a lot of ideas and she was just like, “I just want to throw this out there real quick.“ And they were all hilarious.

SHANNON I felt that way with Jim Carrey. I was like, “God, he just elevates every sketch.”

    Kate McKinnon.

    Mary Ellen Matthews

Fans love it when you break.

    JONES It’s funny as hell.

YANG It’s a live show. When things go wrong, it’s an error in stimulus. You laugh because something is not landing normally.

    JONES Or something is landing.

MEYERS But also sometimes we get to witness something the audience doesn’t. I guess it was the Betty White show, and Molly, you did Sally O’Malley. You were pulling your pants up, and Amy [Poehler] and I were at the Weekend Update desk. The audacity and the joy. We were so lucky to have that vantage point. That was one of my favorite moments.

    Seth Meyers.

    Mary Ellen Matthews

THOMPSON Molly, you eat it up every single time. And my favorite is when you say, “Stretch.” Because it’s like the “kick” is intense. You’re having such a good time doing the dance of your gift.

MEYERS I turned 50 last year, and 15 different SNL people texted me that it was time to “kick and stretch.”

SHANNON This is not funny at all, but my dad was very badly injured in an automobile accident and he had to learn to walk again. The character is based on his limp. That’s me imitating my dad. She’s like, “I can’t,” but then she fools people. She’s got power. She can f— you all.

    Mary Ellen Matthews

Lorne has told cast members that it takes three to four years to get comfortable on the show.

YANG I think it takes three to four years to get over the fear of getting fired. But I’m still a wreck every Saturday.

THOMPSON Comfortable is subjective because we’re always presenting something new. We never really have a relaxed moment until after it’s done.

Saturday Night Live airs Saturdays at 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Saturday Night Live veterans Seth Meyers, Kenan Thompson, and Kate McKinnon opened up about some behind-the-scenes secrets from the long-running sketch comedy show.

Meyers, who served as head writer and “Weekend Update” anchor before leaving SNL in 2014, revealed that one of the most challenging aspects of the show was the high-pressure environment of live television. “You never know what’s going to happen when you’re live on air, and that’s part of the thrill of it,” he said.

Thompson, who holds the record for the longest-tenured cast member in SNL history, shared that the camaraderie among cast members is what keeps him coming back year after year. “We’re like a family here, and that bond is what makes the show so special,” he explained.

McKinnon, known for her spot-on impressions and hilarious characters, revealed that the most memorable moments for her are when a sketch unexpectedly takes off with the audience. “It’s always a great feeling when you can feel the energy in the room and know that you’re connecting with the viewers at home,” she said.

Fans of SNL can catch Meyers, Thompson, and McKinnon in action on the upcoming season of the show, which is set to premiere this fall. Until then, we’ll just have to wait and see what other secrets they have up their sleeves.

    Meg Donnelly and Drake Rodger

The Winchesters was a new spinoff series that was cancelled after one season…

In 2022, Supernatural fans got a big treat – a spinoff series called The Winchesters. The show starred Meg Donnelly and Drake Rodger, and Jensen came back to narrate it. It was the most-watched debut series of the season, but it wasn’t renewed for a second season.

    Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki

    The Winchesters sparked some drama…

Onscreen bros and close pals Jensen and Jared had a bit of drama after news about The Winchesters broke. Jared said that he was “gutted” to learn about the show on Twitter. Of course, they patched things up and moved on, and Jensen explained that he kept it under wraps because he “didn’t wanna jinx it at any cost.”

Are you a die-hard fan of the hit TV show ‘Supernatural’? Well, even if you think you know everything there is to know about the Winchester brothers and their demon-fighting adventures, think again! Here are some things you never knew about ‘Supernatural’:

    1. Spinoff Drama: Did you know that there was actually a spinoff of ‘Supernatural’ in the works? The show was called ‘Wayward Sisters’ and was set to focus on a group of female hunters. Unfortunately, the pilot episode did not get picked up for a full series.

    2. Jensen Ackles Auditioned for Sam: Believe it or not, Jensen Ackles originally auditioned for the role of Sam Winchester, not Dean! However, the casting directors felt that he was better suited to play Dean, and the rest is history.

    3. Set Secrets: The Impala, the iconic car that Dean drives in the show, has actually been in Jensen Ackles’ possession since the show started. He even has a special bond with the car and has referred to it as his “baby.”

    4. Extended Run: ‘Supernatural’ was originally only supposed to run for five seasons, but it was so popular that it was renewed for a total of 15 seasons. The show finally came to an end in 2020.

    5. Evergreen Fanbase: Despite the show ending, the fanbase for ‘Supernatural’ remains strong and dedicated. Fans continue to rewatch old episodes, attend conventions, and create fan fiction and art inspired by the show.

So, there you have it – some things you never knew about ‘Supernatural.’ Whether you’re a longtime fan or just discovering the show, there’s always something new to learn about the Winchester brothers and their supernatural adventures.

From a potential spinoff drama to the role Jensen Ackles originally auditioned for, here are some things you never knew about Supernatural:

    1. Spinoff Drama: There were talks of a spinoff drama centered around the character Jody Mills, played by Kim Rhodes. Unfortunately, the pilot for the spinoff, titled Wayward Sisters, was not picked up by The CW.

    2. Jensen Ackles’ Original Audition: Jensen Ackles, who plays Dean Winchester on the show, actually originally auditioned for the role of Sam Winchester. However, the producers felt that he was better suited for the role of Dean, and the rest is history.

    3. Set Secrets: The Impala, the iconic car driven by the Winchester brothers, is actually a 1967 Chevrolet Impala. The car has become such a symbol of the show that fans often refer to it as the “Baby.”

    4. Extended Run: Originally intended to only run for five seasons, Supernatural has now been on the air for an impressive 15 seasons. The show has become the longest-running sci-fi series in American television history.

    5. Evergreen Fanbase: Despite the show coming to an end after 15 seasons, the fanbase remains strong and dedicated. Supernatural conventions continue to draw large crowds, and the show’s stars, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, remain fan favorites.

  • “Paradise” is a gripping thriller once the secrets start to come out

“Paradise,” a new drama from “This Is Us” creator Dan Fogelman starring that show’s Sterling K. Brown, begins as a murder mystery. The show, which now has three episodes up on Hulu, stars Brown as Xavier Collins, the man charged with protecting President Cal Bradford (James Marsden). In the early moments of the series, he’s failed at exactly that; Bradford has been murdered in his home. But Collins’s reaction — he carefully examines the entire murder scene and the rest of the building before notifying anyone about what’s happened — immediately lets the viewer know something else is going on here.

In fact, quite a lot is going on here. The first episode has been out since this past weekend, but spoilers are ahead if you’d rather go into the series without learning the big secret revealed in the premiere (which you get your first glimpse of in that premiere). The idyllic town where they live is idyllic for a reason — it’s an entirely artificial community constructed underground. How and why the characters all got there is teased out over the course of the season, but very quickly it becomes clear that something catastrophic has occurred to drive them underground.

Fogelman, no stranger to jumping around between the past and the present during his “This Is Us” days, offers glimpses of all of these people at earlier times. Bradford and Collins are on strained terms at the time of his death, but we quickly learn that they were quite close in the past; the reasons for their break are gradually revealed. And while Bradford may be president, he’s grappling with a power behind the throne in the form of Julianne Nicholson’s tech impresario Samantha Redmond. She’s steely and sinister, but we soon learn she’s also battling a traumatic past.

Sarah Shahi and Julianne Nicholson in “Paradise.”Disney/Brian Roedel/Disney

The early episodes are slow going. Clues about the town’s origins are doled out sparingly, and the murder investigation stalls out once Collins is pulled off of it thanks to his strange behavior after finding the body. And while Brown is himself a tremendously compelling performer, his Collins fails to deepen beyond a couple of notes: He’s a grieving widower with cute kids, and a pure-of-heart lawman who’s determined to root out the corruption that’s led here. Nicholson, also a talented actor, inhabits a character who’s perpetually moments away from tapping her fingertips together villainously like Mr. Burns on “The Simpsons.”

It’s Marsden, somewhat surprisingly, who gets the meatiest role, despite being murdered in the pilot. His good looks help him craft a portrait of a callow man thrust into responsibility by his overbearing, wealthy father. In flashbacks, Bradford is revealed to be both complicated and shallow: a man who wants to do good but has never had much willpower to do so. He’s trapped in a life many people would want, but he hates it. He’s only there because of his own extraordinary privilege, and he knows it.

If those early episodes were where the show stayed throughout the season, I’d probably advise you to skip it. I wasn’t overly interested in learning more about the town, or following Collins’s oddly cheerful flirtation with a town therapist (Sarah Shahi), who maintains a concerningly close friendship with Redmond. These folks just aren’t quite compelling enough on their own to make the slow reveals worth your time.

But when the show finally starts giving some answers in the latter half of the season, I became so invested I didn’t even want to pause an episode. The answers themselves matter less than the excitement of watching the reveals; despite Fogelman’s past with emotional dramas, the best moments in “Paradise” are when the thriller aspect takes center stage.

The show’s emotional weight tends to be tied to how complicated it is for all of these people to live the way they do. What does it mean to survive? How could they possibly stay true to the people they were prior to all of this? How can they live with the choices they were forced to make in order to get here?

Until the show begins to open up into storytelling about its broader world, the paradisiacal town has to be the focus, and it simply lacks the excitement of similar idyllic-until-it-isn’t premises. The town is neither sinister enough nor hedonistic enough to be compelling. I kept waiting for some kind of menacing shoe to drop, so to speak, and it never quite does. I’ve seen “Pleasantville”; I know there’s abundant fun to be had with the idea that something that seems like heaven can very well be the opposite.

The upside to all of this, and the reason you may want to keep watching, is that the show doesn’t hold its cards that long, and a better and more confident show emerges over the course of the seven episodes.
