No. 6 Seed Penn State Football Moves On to College Football Playoff Semifinal with 31-14 Fiesta Bowl Win over No. 3 Seed Boise State – Penn State

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The No. 6 seed Penn State Football team (13-2, 8-1) earned the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl win by taking down No. 3 seed Boise State (12-2, 7-0) Tuesday night at State Farm Stadium in the College Football Playoff Quarterfinal by a final score of 31-14. Penn State advances to the College Football Playoff Semifinal game in the Capital One Orange Bowl at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Thursday, Jan. 9 at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.

A record-setting offensive day coupled with four takeaways on defense and stellar special teams play propelled the Nittany Lions to the semifinal round of the College Football Playoff. The Nittany Lions earned a 13-win season for the first time in program history with their 31-14 defeat of the third-seeded Broncos on New Year’s Eve.

The running back duo of Kaytron Allen and Nicholas Singleton combined for 221 yards on the ground to lead the Nittany Lion offense. Allen tallied 134 yards on 17 carries while Singleton collected 87 yards, including a 58-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, on 12 totes. Both backs crossed the 1,000 rushing-yard plateau in their respective seasons Tuesday against the Broncos, becoming the first teammates in school history to each eclipse the 1,000-yard mark in the same season.

Tight end Tyler Warren posted six catches for 63 yards and two touchdowns in a historic outing. His third-quarter touchdown reception was his 98th catch of the season which broke the Penn State single-season reception record held by Allen Robinson (97; 2013). Warren, who won Offensive Player of the Game for his performance, was quarterback Drew Allar’s favorite target in a game in which he completed 13 of 25 passes for 171 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Omari Evans hauled in Allar’s other touchdown pass as one of his two catches on the night, a 38-yard touchdown strike in the first quarter.

Penn State’s defense recorded four takeaways against Boise State, including three fourth-quarter interceptions. Zakee Wheatley, Zion Tracy, and Tyrece Mills each came away with picks, turning away Bronco scoring opportunities with splash plays. Wheatley was named Defensive Player of the Game for his efforts. Additionally, Kobe King forced a fumble by Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty early in the first half, stifling yet another scoring opportunity for Boise State.

King and teammate Jaylen Reed led the defense with eight tackles apiece while Tony Rojas posted seven. Penn State collected nine tackles for loss, including sacks by Reed, Amin Vanover, and Dani Dennis-Sutton.

    HOW IT HAPPENED

Penn State won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. Boise State missed a 45-yard field goal on its first offensive possession, giving the Nittany Lion offense the ball at its own 28-yard line.

A nine-play, 72-yard scoring drive capped off by an 11-yard toe-tap touchdown from Allar to Warren put Penn State up 7-0 in the early going. 42 rushing yards from Allen on the drive helped push the Nittany Lion offense inside the red zone where Warren hauled in his 18th career receiving score.

Two tackles for loss by Dennis-Sutton, including a sack, forced a Boise State three-and-out and Penn State took over on its own 44-yard line after a punt. Allar connected on his second passing touchdown of the day, this time on a 38-yard dime to Evans. The Nittany Lions went 56 yards on four plays to extend a 14-0 lead over the Broncos at the 3:35 mark of the opening quarter.

Penn State recovered an Ashton Jeanty fumble on Boise State’s next drive and took over at its own 49-yard line. The Nittany Lions turned the ball over shortly after and the Broncos’ offense took the field at their own 35-yard line.

Boise State scored its first touchdown on an eight-yard run in the second quarter. The Broncos went 52 yards in eight plays for the score, cutting the Penn State lead to 14-7 with 8:41 on the clock in the second quarter.

The Nittany Lions tacked on a field goal as time expired in the first half to go up 17-7 entering the midway break. The 40-yard field goal by Ryan Barker gave the Nittany Lions a two-score lead heading into halftime.

A 53-yard touchdown pass by the Broncos was the first scoring play of the second half. Boise State traveled 83 yards on five plays to make the score 17-14 Penn State just over three minutes into the second half.

Warren’s second receiving touchdown of the game put Penn State up 24-14 with 7:22 on the clock in the third quarter. The 13-yard reception gave him 98 catches on the season, the Penn State single-season receptions record.

A pick by Wheatley stifled the Broncos’ ensuing drive, Penn State’s second takeaway of the day. Penn State’s defense then stopped Boise State short once again, forcing a field goal attempt that was missed by the Bronco kicker, his second missed field goal of the day. Penn State held a 24-14 lead through the 9:20 mark of the fourth quarter.

Penn State took the momentum and capitalized, scoring their fourth touchdown of the night on a 58-yard run by Singleton to go up 31-14 with less than five minutes to play.

Interceptions by Tracy and Mills on what ended up being the Broncos’ final two drives of the game sealed the 31-14 Fiesta Bowl victory for the Nittany Lions.

Penn State Football Punches Ticket to College Football Playoff Semifinal with Fiesta Bowl Win

In a thrilling showdown between the No. 6 seed Penn State Nittany Lions and the No. 3 seed Boise State Broncos, it was Penn State who emerged victorious with a commanding 31-14 win in the Fiesta Bowl.

The Nittany Lions came out strong from the start, with their defense stifling Boise State’s high-powered offense and their offense clicking on all cylinders. Quarterback Sean Clifford led the way for Penn State, throwing for 250 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Noah Cain added 120 rushing yards and a touchdown of his own.

On the defensive side of the ball, Penn State was relentless, forcing three turnovers and holding Boise State to just 14 points, well below their season average. The Nittany Lions’ defense also came up with several key stops in the red zone, preventing the Broncos from mounting any serious comeback.

With this impressive win, Penn State now advances to the College Football Playoff semifinal, where they will face off against the No. 2 seed in a highly anticipated matchup. The Nittany Lions have proven that they belong among the nation’s elite teams, and they will be looking to continue their strong play and make a run at the national championship.

Congratulations to Penn State on their Fiesta Bowl victory and best of luck in the College Football Playoff semifinal! Let’s go Nittany Lions! #WeArePennState #CFBPlayoffBound

Who gets the NFC’s No. 1 seed and a first-round bye if the Vikings and Lions tie in Week 18?

The NFL script writers sure saved the best for last. The Lions host the Vikings on “Sunday Night Football” to end the regular season, the first regular-season game in NFL history between teams with 13-plus wins.

You couldn’t draw up a regular-season game with much more at stake than this one. The winner of the game will be the one seed in the NFC, win the NFC North and have home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs. Neither team would have to play outdoors all postseason.

The loser will get the five seed in the NFC and go on the road in the wild-card round (either at the Rams, Buccaneers or Falcons), becoming the first 14-win team to ever play in that round. There’s a good chance the five seed’s path to the Super Bowl would include a road game at the NFC North champion in the divisional round and the No. 2 seed Eagles in the NFC Championship Game.

That’s a massive difference, considering one seeds have made 49 Super Bowls since the playoffs expanded to 10 teams in 1978, and five seeds have made a grand total of three.

OK but what if there’s a tie?

There has not been a tie since Week 13 of 2022 between the Giants and Commanders, but if you remember the Chargers-Raiders regular season finale in 2021, anything can happen. The Raiders won that game on a 47-yard field goal as time expired in overtime; otherwise it would have ended in a tie and the Steelers would have missed the playoffs.

A tie in Sunday’s Vikings-Lions game wouldn’t be quite that doomsday scenario. The Lions would get the one seed because they own the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Vikings courtesy of a 31-29 win in Minnesota in Week 7.

In the event of a tie, it also means Detroit’s result on Monday in San Francisco wasn’t completely meaningless. If the Lions had lost that game and tied in Week 18 vs. the Vikings, they would be the five seed.

I think Dan Campbell would sooner instantaneously combust than play for a tie in overtime, but if somehow the game ended in a tie, the Lions would be the beneficiaries.

In the event of a tie between the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions in Week 18, the NFC’s No. 1 seed and a first-round bye would go to the team that wins the tiebreaker. The tiebreaker scenario would involve looking at various factors such as head-to-head record, division record, conference record, strength of victory, and strength of schedule.

It is important to note that tiebreakers can be complex and may require multiple steps to determine the final outcome. Ultimately, the team that comes out on top in the tiebreaker process will secure the coveted No. 1 seed and a well-deserved first-round bye in the playoffs.

Stay tuned as the Vikings and Lions battle it out on the field in Week 18, with potentially high stakes on the line for both teams in the race for the NFC’s top seed.

  • Rams currently hold No. 4 seed entering Week 16

Rams currently hold No. 4 seed entering Week 16

Thanks to defeating the Cardinals and winning the Strength of Victory tiebreaker over the Seahawks, the Rams clinched the NFC West – and by extension, a playoff berth – this past weekend.

Here’s what that full NFC playoff picture looks like and how various Week 18 matchups – including the Rams’ against the Seahawks at SoFi Stadium – will impact the playoff picture.

No. 1 seed – Detroit Lions

The Lions maintained control of the top seed with their win over the 49ers, and still hold the head-to-head tiebreaker against the Vikings, who also have a 14-2 overall record.

Detroit has already clinched a playoff berth.

No. 2 seed – Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles have already clinched a playoff berth and are locked into the No. 2 seed with their win over the Cowboys.

No. 3 seed – Los Angeles Rams

The Rams remained in the No. 3 seed with their win over the Cardinals.

Los Angeles has already clinched a playoff berth.

No. 4 seed – Tampa Bay Buccaneers

A win over the Panthers, plus a Falcons loss to the Commanders, moved the Bucs back into the No. 4 seed. However, to clinch a playoff berth, they’ll win the NFC South, which means needing to defeat the Saints, or have Falcons lose to the Panthers. A loss and a Falcons win would make the Falcons division champions.

No. 5 seed – Minnesota Vikings

With its win over the Packers, the Vikings set up a battle for the NFC North, No. 1 overall seed and homefield advantage throughout the playoffs against the Lions next week.

Minnesota has already clinched a playoff berth.

No. 6 seed – Washington Commanders

Washington clinched a playoff berth with their Sunday Night Football win over Atlanta. It moved up to the No. 6 seed thanks to Green Bay’s road loss to Minnesota.

No. 7 seed – Green Bay Packers

With their loss to the Vikings and the Commanders’ win over the Falcons, the Packers slid down one spot to the No. 7 seed.

Green Bay has already clinched a playoff berth.

Clinching scenarios and key Week 18 matchups

The Rams clinch the No. 3 seed with a loss or tie versus the Seahawks, or a Buccaneers loss or tie versus the Falcons. If they keep the No. 3 seed, they would host either the Commanders or Packers – the remaining possibilities for the No. 6 seed – at SoFi Stadium on Wild Card weekend.

If the Rams lose and the Bucs win, the Bucs would earn the No. 3 seed and bump the Rams down to the No. 4 seed, which would set up Los Angeles to host the loser of Minnesota-Detroit on Wild Card weekend.

As for other games to watch besides Rams-Seahawks:

    • Buccaneers at Falcons (10 a.m. PT Sunday, CBS): As mentioned above, this has implications on the third and fourth seeds.
    • Commanders at Cowboys (10 a.m. PT Sunday, FOX): A Washington win would lock it into the No. 6 seed. If it loses and Green Bay wins, the Packers would jump them and take the No. 6 seed.
    • Bears at Packers (10 a.m. PT Sunday, FOX): Packers need a win and Commanders loss to take the No. 6 seed; otherwise, they’ll be locked into the No. 7 seed. Even if Green Bay and Washington both win, Washington would keep the No. 6 seed because of the conference record tiebreaker.
    • Vikings at Lions (5:15 p.m. PT Sunday, NBC): The winner of this game gets the No. 1 seed in the NFC and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The loser bumps down to the No. 5 seed – and would potentially travel to Los Angeles to take on the Rams if the Rams get bumped down to the No. 4 seed.

The Los Angeles Rams are currently holding onto the No. 4 seed in the NFC as they head into Week 16 of the NFL season. With a record of 9-4, the Rams are looking to secure their playoff spot and potentially move up in the standings before the postseason begins.

Led by quarterback Matthew Stafford and a strong defense, the Rams have shown they have what it takes to compete with the best teams in the league. They have wins against tough opponents like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Arizona Cardinals, and are poised to make a deep playoff run.

As they prepare to face off against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 16, the Rams will be looking to solidify their position in the playoff race and continue to build momentum for the postseason. With just a few weeks left in the regular season, every game is crucial for the Rams as they aim to make a statement in the playoffs.

  • How Detroit can clinch NFC’s No. 1 seed

How Detroit can clinch NFC’s No. 1 seed

With the Detroit Lions currently sitting at the top of the NFC standings, the possibility of clinching the No. 1 seed in the conference is within reach. Here are a few key steps the Lions can take to secure home-field advantage throughout the playoffs:

    1. Keep winning: The most obvious way for Detroit to clinch the top seed is to continue winning games. With a strong record already in place, the Lions must maintain their focus and momentum in order to secure victories in the remaining games of the regular season.

    2. Defend Ford Field: With a perfect record at home this season, the Lions must continue to dominate at Ford Field. By winning their remaining home games, Detroit can solidify their position as the top seed in the NFC and give themselves a significant advantage heading into the playoffs.

    3. Get healthy: Injuries are always a concern as the season progresses, but the Lions must prioritize getting key players healthy and back on the field. A fully healthy roster will give Detroit the best chance of securing the No. 1 seed and making a deep playoff run.

    4. Focus on the details: In close games, the little things can make a big difference. Whether it’s avoiding turnovers, converting on third downs, or excelling in the red zone, the Lions must pay attention to the details and execute at a high level in order to secure the top seed in the NFC.

By following these steps and staying focused on their ultimate goal, the Detroit Lions have a strong chance of clinching the No. 1 seed in the NFC and positioning themselves for success in the playoffs. Go Lions! #OnePride

  • Lions, Vikings to battle for NFC’s No. 1 seed, 1st-round bye

Lions, Vikings to battle for NFC’s No. 1 seed, 1st-round bye

The NFC’s No. 1 seed will come down to the final game of the regular season when the Detroit Lions host the Minnesota Vikings next Sunday night.

The winner takes the NFC North and gets a first-round playoff bye and home-field advantage until the Super Bowl. The loser becomes the No. 5 seed and must play on the road in the wild-card round. The Lions hold the tiebreaker if the teams enter with identical records and play to a tie.

The Vikings (14-2) held on for a 27-25 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday to set up the high-stakes showdown in Week 18. The Lions (13-2) visit the San Francisco 49ers (6-9) on Monday night in a rematch of the NFC title game. If they win, they have to beat the Vikings again or tie. Detroit beat Minnesota 31-29 in Week 7. If they lose or tie, they must defeat the Vikings.

The Philadelphia Eagles (13-3) clinched the NFC East and locked up the No. 2 seed with a 41-7 rout of the Dallas Cowboys. However, coach Nick Sirianni has a tough decision to make this week. Saquon Barkley is 101 yards away from breaking Eric Dickerson’s single-season record for rushing yards in a season.

Sirianni has to decide whether to rest Barkley and most of his starters to prepare for the playoffs or let his star try for the 40-year-old record.

The Los Angeles Rams (10-6) clinched the NFC West and the Seattle Seahawks (9-7) were eliminated when the Commanders beat the Falcons 30-24 in overtime Sunday night. Washington (11-5) secured a wild-card berth with the win. The Commanders and the Packers (11-5) hold the final two NFC playoff spots.

Atlanta’s loss gave the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-7) control of the NFC South and dropped the Falcons (8-8) into second place. The Buccaneers would clinch the division with a victory or tie against New Orleans next Sunday.

Three teams in the AFC have already secured their seeds. The two-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs (15-1) won the AFC West weeks ago and clinched the No. 1 seed.

The AFC East champion Buffalo Bills (13-3) are the No. 2 seed. The AFC South champion Houston Texans (9-7) are the No. 4 seed.

The Baltimore Ravens (11-5) would win the AFC North and get the No. 3 seed with a win or tie against Cleveland on Saturday or a loss or tie by Pittsburgh, which hosts Cincinnati on Saturday night.

If they don’t win the division, the Steelers have already clinched a wild-card berth. The Los Angeles Chargers (10-6) also secured a wild-card spot. They’ll be no lower than the sixth seed.

The final AFC playoff spot comes down to the Broncos (9-7), Dolphins (8-8) or Bengals (8-8).

Denver clinches with a win or tie against the Chiefs. The Dolphins need the Broncos to lose and they must beat the Jets on the road to get in. The Bengals must win and the Broncos and Dolphins have to lose for them to get in.

Exciting news for NFL fans as the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings are set to face off in a crucial matchup to determine the NFC’s No. 1 seed and secure a first-round bye in the playoffs. Both teams have been on a hot streak this season, with impressive records and standout performances from key players.

The Lions, led by quarterback Matthew Stafford, have been a force to be reckoned with on offense, while the Vikings have relied on their strong defense to shut down opponents. This game is sure to be a nail-biter as these two division rivals battle it out for the coveted top spot in the NFC.

Fans can expect a hard-fought game with playoff implications on the line. The winner of this matchup will have a significant advantage heading into the postseason, so both teams will be giving it their all to come out on top.

Be sure to tune in to see which team will emerge victorious and claim the No. 1 seed in the NFC. It’s sure to be a game you won’t want to miss!

NFL playoff picture and draft order Week 17: Vikings hang on in race for top seed as Rams, Commanders clinch

As Week 17 of the season wraps up, we now know this: The Philadelphia Eagles are NFC East champions, the Indianapolis Colts were eliminated from the AFC playoff race, and both the Washington Commanders and Los Angeles Rams earned playoff spots.

And the NFC race will now come down to a winner-take-all battle in the NFC North.

The Eagles became the first team in the NFC to claim a division title after their blowout of the rival Dallas Cowboys. Their chances of winning the conference, however, were eliminated on Sunday afternoon after the Vikings held on to beat the Green Bay Packers in Minneapolis. The Vikings’ matchup with the Detroit Lions next week will now determine who wins both the NFC North and the NFC’s No. 1 seed as a whole. The winner of that game gets a first-round bye, and the loser will be the No. 5 seed and have to travel for their first playoff game.

Also in the NFC, the Washington Commanders secured a playoff spot with their overtime win against the Atlanta Falcons. That also gave the Los Angeles Rams the NFC West title and a playoff spot of their own via the strength of victory tiebreaker against the Seattle Seahawks after beating the Arizona Cardinals, 13-9, on Saturday night.

In the AFC, six of the seven playoff spots are taken, and one of them won’t be the Colts, who lost at the New York Giants on Sunday. The defeat knocked them out of the postseason race.

The Kansas City Chiefs clinched the conference’s overall top seed with a 29-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday. The Los Angeles Chargers joined the postseason party with a 40-7 win over the New England Patriots on Saturday afternoon. And the Cincinnati Bengals avoided elimination by defeating the Denver Broncos in overtime on Saturday night.

The Broncos missed a chance to clinch a playoff berth with a win or tie at the Bengals. It would’ve been their first time in the postseason since winning Super Bowl 50. They will conclude the regular season against the Chiefs, who don’t have much to play for with the No. 1 seed already secured.

In order to nab that final postseason wild-card ticket, the Bengals need to win their regular-season finale against the Steelers, have the Broncos lose to the Chiefs and the Dolphins lose next week at the New York Jets. Miami rolled over the Browns on Sunday afternoon.

The Dolphins can get that final playoff slot with a win against the Jets and a Broncos defeat in Week 18.

The NFC North title is up for grabs and down to the Lions and Vikings.

The Vikings beat the Packers at home on Sunday to get to 14-2 on the season. That moved them into the lead in the NFC North. The division will come down to their game next week in Detroit regardless of whether the Lions beat the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night. As of now, the Vikings are looking at a first-round bye in the playoffs.

The rest of the conference is just about solidified. The Commanders are back in the playoffs for the first time since winning the division in 2020 after beating the Falcons. The Buccaneers are leading the NFC South after their blowout win over the Carolina Panthers, but that division is not yet locked up.

The New England Patriots moved into position to claim the No. 1 overall pick in April’s draft this weekend after both the Giants and Raiders won. Both franchises could use a new quarterback, and both Miami star Cam Ward and Colorado star Shedeur Sanders are available and expected to go early in the draft.
