Wyden demands answers on Musk personnel seeking access to U.S. Treasury system
WASHINGTON, D.C. (KATU) — Senator Ron Wyden, D-Ore., has called for an explanation from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent following reports that individuals linked to Elon Musk attempted to gain access to a highly sensitive Treasury Department payment system. The system, which is managed by non-political staff, handles trillions of dollars annually, including Social Security and Medicare benefits, tax credits, and payments to government contractors, some of which compete with Musk-owned companies.
“To put it bluntly, these payment systems simply cannot fail, and any politically-motivated meddling in them risks severe damage to our country and the economy,” Wyden wrote in a letter to Bessent. “I am deeply concerned that following the federal grant and loan freeze earlier this week, these officials associated with Musk may have intended to access these payment systems to illegally withhold payments to any number of programs.”

Wyden expressed further concern about Musk’s business ties to China, stating, “The press has previously reported that Musk was denied a high-level clearance to access the government’s most sensitive secrets. I am concerned that Musk’s enormous business operation in China…endangers U.S. cybersecurity and creates conflicts of interest that make his access to these systems a national security risk.”
Wyden’s letter posed several questions to the Treasury Department, including whether officials linked to Musk or DOGE have requested or been granted access to the Bureau of the Fiscal Service’s payment systems, and if so, under what legal authority and for what purpose. The senator also inquired about any vetting processes conducted by the Treasury Department regarding potential conflicts of interest due to Musk’s business operations in China.
Senator Ron Wyden, the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, has demanded answers from Tesla CEO Elon Musk regarding reports that Tesla personnel were seeking access to the U.S. Treasury Department’s system for processing tax credits.Wyden expressed concerns over potential misuse of taxpayer funds and called for transparency in the matter. He requested a detailed explanation from Musk on the reasons for Tesla employees seeking access to the Treasury system and how the company intended to use the information obtained.
The senator emphasized the need for oversight and accountability in ensuring that federal resources are not being exploited for private gain. He warned against any attempts to manipulate the system for personal or corporate benefit.
Wyden’s inquiry comes amidst ongoing scrutiny of Musk and Tesla’s financial dealings, including allegations of tax evasion and other improprieties. The senator has vowed to hold those responsible accountable and ensure that taxpayer dollars are used responsibly and ethically.
Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as more information becomes available.

Ole Miss hoops seeking first ever win over No. 1 this weekend as red-hot Auburn comes to town
If one were to ask Ole Miss head coach Chris Beard about the significance of this weekend’s home matchup against No. 1 Auburn, he’d say that it’s the biggest game of the year simply because it’s the next game on the schedule.
That said, the Rebels (16-5, 5-3 SEC) have a chance to make history for the second time this season if they are to pull off the upset. Earlier this month, Ole Miss earned the program’s first ever road win over an AP Top 5 opponent. However, Ole Miss is still 0-for-16 all time against the top-ranked team in the country. On Saturday, the Rebels will get another shot at it as the red-hot Tigers (19-1, 7-0 SEC) come to town.
Tipoff on Saturday is set for 1 p.m. CT inside the SJB Pavilion and can be seen on ESPN or listened to on the Ole Miss Radio Network (Sirius XM 84).
This matchup has been declared a sellout since December of 2024.
“It’s a great opportunity to play against the No. 1 ranked team in the country. Night in and night out, you look at the rankings and there’s 10 ranked teams from the SEC in the Top 25,” Ole Miss assistant coach Brian Burg said on Thursday’s RebTalk. “… They’re really talented. Johni Broome is probably right now player of the year across the country. It’s not just him, it’s an entire team around him. We’re excited to have that ability to compete against them… You look at their team, they’re dynamic from the guard play and Johni Broome being inside. We’re going to have to execute our game plan to a tee and be able to rebound and to have the play style we like to play in. It’s important to execute on Saturday.”
There’s a number of good reasons why Auburn is the unanimous top-ranked team in the country. Out of the 20 games they’ve played, 13 of them were against Quad 1 teams, boasting an incredible 12-1 record against them. They’ve won 12 consecutive games since suffering their one loss at No. 9 Duke.
Preseason SEC Player of the Year and All-American candidate Johni Broome missed two games recently with a left-ankle sprain, but the Tigers have continued to win without him. Broome currently averages 18.2 points per game (second in the SEC) and a conference-best 11.2 rebounds per game. He also ranks among the nation’s best in blocks per game at 2.8, best in the SEC and fifth in the NCAA, and double-doubles with 12, best in the SEC and fifth in the NCAA as well.
It’s not just him though, as the Tigers had five players averaging double-figure points per game. Auburn leads the nation in blocks per game with an average of 7.0 per game, and ranks fourth in assist-turnover ratio at 1.82, and fourth in scoring margin at +18.4. Like Ole Miss, they take care of the basketball by committing just 9.4 turnovers per game.
While Auburn is the unanimous No. 1 overall projected seed in the NCAA Tournament, Ole Miss finds itself projected as high as a No. 5 seed in the South Region, in the exact same region as Auburn. Ole Miss is No. 22 in the NCAA NET at the time of writing with a 4-5 record against Quad 1 opponents.
Ole Miss has been on a bit of a roller coaster since the beginning of SEC play, starting 4-0 for the first time since 2013, dropping three straight with two decided by a single possession, before getting back in the win column with a 72-69 win over Texas.
“We always talk about it being an 18-round fight and we just finished the eighth round. Glad to get back on the winning side. I thought it was a real competitive game. Texas is really talented, but our guys really executed especially late,” Burg said on Thursday.
The Rebels rank fourth in the country by committing just 9.3 turnovers per game with a turnover margin of +6.6, which is third-best in the NCAA. They also force 15.9 per game, the 13th most in the nation.

ICC prosecutor seeking arrest warrants for those accused of atrocities in Sudan’s West Darfur region
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court announced Monday that his office will be seeking arrest warrants for those accused of atrocities in Sudan’s West Darfur region, which has seen reported ethnic cleansing by paramilitary forces that have been fighting government forces for 19 months.
Karim Khan told the U.N. Security Council that crimes are being committed in Darfur “as we speak and daily” and are being used as a weapon of war. He said that conclusion is the result of “a hard-edged analysis” based on evidence and information collected by his office.
Sudan plunged into conflict in mid-April 2023, when long-simmering tensions between its military and paramilitary leaders broke out in the capital, Khartoum, and spread to other regions, including the vast western Darfur region.
Two decades ago, Darfur became synonymous with genocide and war crimes, particularly by the notorious Janjaweed Arab militias, against populations that identify as Central or East African. Up to 300,000 people were killed and 2.7 million were driven from their homes.
Khan told the council in January there were grounds to believe both government forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Force, which was born out of the Janjaweed, may be committing war crimes, crimes against humanity or genocide in Darfur.
The Biden administration, just before it left office this month, determined that the RSF and its proxies are committing genocide in Sudan’s civil war. And the ICC prosecutor told the council Monday that there are “very clear echoes” in the current conflict of what happened 20 years ago.
“The pattern of crimes, the perpetrators, the parties, tracked very closely with the same protagonists, the same targeted groups as existed in 2003” and led the Security Council to refer Darfur to the ICC, Khan said. “It’s the same communities, the same groups suffering, a new generation suffering the same hell that has been endured by other generations of Darfuris, and this is tragic.”
Human Rights Watch in a major report last May said the Rapid Support Forces and their allied militias carried out attacks against the ethnic Masalit and other non-Arab groups in El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur state, from April to June 2023, with attacks intensifying that November.
At least thousands of people were killed and hundreds of thousands displaced during the attacks, according to the report by the leading rights group.
“I can confirm today that my office is taking the necessary steps to put forward applications for warrants of arrest in relations to crimes we allege are being committed and have been committed in West Darfur,” Khan told the council on Monday.
He gave no details on the specific crimes or the people the ICC wants arrested. But he did say his office is particularly concerned about a stream of allegations of gender crimes against women and girls, which he said were “a priority” for the ICC.
He said the last six months have seen “a tailspin into deeper suffering, deeper misery for the people of Darfur,” with famine present, conflict increasing, children targeted, girls and women subjected to rape and the whole landscape “one of destruction.”
Khan had a simple message for those on the ground in El Geneina in West Darfur, the city of El Fasher in North Darfur, which is besieged by RSF forces, and elsewhere in Darfur: “Now, better late than never, for goodness sake, comply with international humanitarian law, not as a charity, not out of some political necessity, but out of the dictates of humanity.”
Khan told the council he made efforts to engage with the RSF to obtain information relevant to the ICC’s investigations, and members of his office met with representatives of the paramilitary force last week.
“I do expect, and hope, and require swift and meaningful action, and will be monitoring that,” he said.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor is seeking arrest warrants for individuals accused of committing atrocities in Sudan’s West Darfur region. The prosecutor has launched an investigation into alleged crimes including murder, rape, torture, and other forms of violence that have taken place in the region. The prosecutor’s office has stated that there is evidence to suggest that these crimes were committed by both government forces and rebel groups operating in the area. The ICC prosecutor is urging the international community to support efforts to hold those responsible for these atrocities accountable.
The situation in West Darfur has been marked by ongoing violence and displacement of civilians, with reports of widespread human rights abuses and violations of international humanitarian law. The ICC prosecutor’s decision to seek arrest warrants sends a strong message that those who commit such crimes will not go unpunished.
As the investigation continues, it is crucial for the ICC prosecutor to receive full cooperation from all parties involved in order to ensure that justice is served for the victims of these heinous crimes. The international community must also remain vigilant and continue to pressure all parties to end the violence and work towards a peaceful resolution in West Darfur.

Texas hosts No. 13 Texas A&M seeking to avenge 20-point loss in College Station
The Lone Star Showdown finally returns to the Forty Acres as the Texas Longhorns host the No. 13 Texas A&M Aggies on Saturday at the Moody Center after matchups on the gridiron and the hardwood in College Station.
The basketball edition came earlier this month in the SEC debut for Texas, a 20-point loss after heading into halftime tied as the Longhorns went 1-of-12 shooting from beyond the arc in the second half, turned the ball over six times, and committed 12 fouls. The inability to defend without fouling produced 32 free-throw attempts for the Aggies, who also won the rebounding battle by 10 boards and had a 48-16 edge in points in the paint, aided by 17 layups.
It was a physical introduction to conference play for Texas, which has won two of its last three games behind an improving defense with the Aggies looming as the sixth
After falling apart down the stretch in Gainesville against Florida Texas head coach Rodney Terry challenged his team to turn in a complete defensive performance in Tuesday’s 61-53 win over No. 22 Missouri in Austin and the Longhorns responded, holding the Tigers to 33.3-percent shooting in the second half, including 3-of-12 shooting from three.
Junior guard Jordan Pope called it the team’s best defensive game of the season and the numbers agree — the win over Missouri bested the road win against Oklahoma as top performances in defensive efficiency.
“Coming into the Missouri game, we really wanted to hang our hats on the defensive end and execute the game plan. And I think we did a good job bouncing back and just looking ourselves in the mirror and seeing what we need to work on, what we need to do in order to be successful in this league,” Pope said.
Even in the two SEC wins, however, Texas has struggled with putting opponents on the free-throw line — the Texas A&M loss was an anomaly at the time, but the free-throw rates were similar for Oklahoma and Missouri.
With a win probability of 54 percent on Saturday, the Longhorns need to protect their home court with the team’s NCAA Tournament projections swinging 20 percentage points with alternating wins and losses in the last three games. To do that, Texas needs to keep A&M off the free-throw line and out of the paint.
They also have to compete harder than they did in College Station — Terry calls the Aggies the best team in the country at getting to 50/50 balls, bolstering an offensive rebounding rate that ranks No. 1 nationally. With 11 offensive rebounds in the first matchup, Texas A&M’s offensive rebounding rate was about 10 percent below its season average, but the 14 second-chance points scored by the Aggies made a big impact on the game.
“I think the thing that translates for us from that game that we’ll have to have carry over with the A&M game is competitive plays. I thought we made a lot of competitive plays in the game Tuesday night against Missouri. When I say competitive plays, A&M is I think the best in the country at 50-50 balls — they do a great job of out-competing you to loose balls, long rebounds, the best at extra-effort plays. I thought we had a lot of really good extra-effort, competitive plays in the game that we’ll have to try to have on Saturday against the team that I think that does it best in the country,” Terry said.
Junior guard Chendall Weaver is still out “indefinitely,” according to Terry, while the SEC availability report for Saturday’s game has senior forward Arthur Kaluma was listed as a game-time decision before being ruled out shortly before tipoff with a left knee injury. Kaluma has recorded double-doubles in each of the last two games.
Tip is at 1:30 p.m. Central on ESPN2 with Texas a 1.5-point favorite, according to FanDuel. The Longhorns have won 10 straight games against the Aggies in Austin and 23 of the last 24 home games dating back to 1988.
The highly anticipated rematch between in-state rivals Texas and Texas A&M is set to take place this weekend, with the Longhorns seeking redemption after suffering a 20-point loss to the Aggies earlier in the season.No. 13 Texas A&M delivered a dominant performance in their last meeting, outscoring the Longhorns with ease and handing them a humbling defeat on their home court in College Station. Now, Texas will have the opportunity to turn the tables and show that they are capable of competing with one of the top teams in the country.
With both teams boasting talented rosters and a fierce competitive spirit, fans can expect an intense and closely contested matchup as the Longhorns look to avenge their previous loss and secure a crucial victory in conference play.
The game is sure to be a can’t-miss event for college basketball fans, as Texas and Texas A&M renew their rivalry and battle it out on the court in a high-stakes showdown that will have implications for both teams as they jockey for position in the standings.
Be sure to tune in to see if Texas can come out on top and exact revenge on their rivals, or if Texas A&M will continue their winning ways and assert their dominance once again. It’s bound to be a thrilling game that will keep fans on the edge of their seats until the final buzzer sounds.

Newly minted Secretary of State Marco Rubio has reportedly directed his agency to freeze passport applications that contain a request for an X gender marker or a change of gender.
According to an internal State Department document obtained on Thursday by The Guardian, Rubio told staff that “sex, and not gender, shall be used” on documents like passports and overseas birth certificates. The document instructs workers to “suspend any application requesting an X sex marker,” as well as “any application where the applicant is seeking to change their sex marker,” citing President Trump’s anti-trans executive order this week: “The policy of the United States is that an individual’s sex is not changeable.”
Rubio’s memo reportedly did not provide additional details about the suspension policy, including how long any such suspension periods may last. In response to an emailed request for comment from Them, a State Department spokesperson said only that the agency “does not comment on leaked internal documents.”
Earlier this week, following Trump’s executive order, White House officials said that the policy changes would not affect existing valid passports until they are renewed. At that point, trans, nonbinary, and intersex people “have to use their God-given sex, which was decided at birth,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told NOTUS.
“This is an area where there is broad presidential authority to make changes,” said ACLU attorney Chase Strangio in an Instagram video Friday morning. “This has always been the area where they could act the fastest [in the sex discrimination executive order].” Strangio emphasized that “it would be a significant escalation outside their legal authority” to attempt to revoke currently valid passports, and that the policy change does not affect state ID cards or similar state-level identification. Speaking to Them via email, Strangio further stressed that “just because we are seeing immediate action on this part of the [executive order] does not mean that the rest of the EO is going to be immediately implemented across the government.”
Trump’s Anti-Trans Executive Order Includes “Conception” Language That Signals Trouble for Reproductive Rights
“This is just the first of many alarm bells that should be sounding about this administration,” an ACLU spokesperson told Them.
“We are monitoring every agency action that is attempting to implement Trump’s executive order,” Strangio added in the video. “I’m here, and I’m sorry, and we’re going to keep fighting.”
LGBTQ+ legal advocacy group Lambda Legal also vowed to litigate against Trump’s orders this week, noting in a statement that the State Department was forced to adopt “X” passport markers as a result of a lawsuit from intersex activist Dana Zzyym. A district court ruled in 2018 that the department’s previous binary sex policy violated the Administrative Procedure Act.
“Lambda Legal secured the first U.S. passport with an ‘X’ gender marker for our brave client, Dana Zzyym,” wrote Lambda Legal CEO Kevin Jennings, “and we’ll continue to stand with Dana and all intersex, nonbinary, and transgender people to defend their right to identity documents that accurately identify who they are, and their equal protection rights against targeting and exclusion by their own government.”

In a controversial move, Senator Marco Rubio has ordered the suspension of passport applications from anyone seeking to change their gender marker. This decision has sparked outrage and criticism from LGBTQ+ advocates and allies.Rubio’s decision to suspend these applications is seen as a direct attack on the transgender community and a violation of their rights. Many argue that individuals should have the right to change their gender marker on official documents in order to accurately reflect their gender identity.
Critics of Rubio’s order have pointed out that this move is discriminatory and goes against the progress that has been made in recognizing and respecting transgender individuals. They are calling for the immediate reversal of this decision and for the protection of transgender rights.
This latest move by Rubio has reignited the debate over transgender rights and has once again brought the issue to the forefront of political discourse. It remains to be seen how this decision will be challenged and what impact it will have on the transgender community.

The proposed larger landing zone is part of SpaceX’s application for experimental permits and a vehicle operator license from the FAA Office of Commercial Space Transportation to operate its Starship/Super Heavy launch vehicle from Boca Chica in Cameron County, Texas.
ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW ADARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW ADSpaceX proposes to increase the Starship’s heavy landings from 5 to 10 to up to 25 Starship and 25 Super Heavy landings annually. Plans call for landing at the vehicle launch area or on floating platforms in the ocean.
Some vehicles would be reused while others would be “expended in the ocean” in three ways, depending on the stage of the program’s development.
Those three ways are:
- Hard water landing at terminal velocity and break up on impact resulting in an explosive event at the surface of the water.
- Soft water landing and tip over and sink or explode on impact at the surface of the water.
- In-flight breakup – Breakup during reentry resulting in debris falling into the ocean (up to 25 times per year of each vehicle stage).
ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW ADSpaceX says it anticipates “no more than 20 explosive events at the surface of the water for each vehicle for the life of the program. These scenarios would occur within the first five years of the program.”
Now, SpaceX lands Super Heavy in the Gulf of Mexico and Starship in the Pacific Ocean (near Hawaiʻi) and the Indian Ocean. In the future, SpaceX is proposing to expand the potential landing sites of Starship. For ocean landings, Super Heavy would land on a droneship or continue to be expended in the Gulf of Mexico. Starship could land on a droneship (floating platform) or be expended in any of the four landing areas: the Indian Ocean, the Pacific Ocean (near Hawaiʻi) and the northeast Pacific Ocean, or the southeast Pacific Ocean.
SpaceX, the aerospace company founded by Elon Musk, is seeking permits to conduct splashdowns in the Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and Indian Ocean for its spacecraft. The company is known for its innovative approach to space travel, and this move could potentially open up new possibilities for commercial space missions.According to Maui Now, SpaceX has already conducted successful splashdowns in the Atlantic Ocean, but is now looking to expand its capabilities to other bodies of water. The Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and Indian Ocean could serve as additional landing sites for SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft, which is designed to transport astronauts to and from the International Space Station.

Pitt Take 5: Pitt plays host to Stanford, seeking 1st 12-2 start in 9 years
When Pitt plays Stanford on Saturday at Petersen Events Center, the Panthers (11-2, 2-0 ACC) have a chance for the program’s best start after 14 games since 2015-2016, when the Panthers opened 14-1 in Jamie Dixon’s last season as coach.
The formula for success includes Pitt’s ability to score (84.2 points per game, third in the conference) with a four-pack of guards good enough to create hyperbole trying to describe them.
For now, let’s stick to the facts:
Ishmael Leggett is averaging 17.50 points, a hair ahead of his running mate, Jaland Lowe (17.46). Damian Dunn was at 11.1 after seven games before his hand injury, and freshman Brandin Cummings sits at 8.2 for the season, 13.8 in the past five games.
Leggett missed the California game Wednesday with a foot injury that is not considered serious. Coach Jeff Capel was noncommital when asked about Leggett’s availability Saturday.
Dunn’s return has been anticipated for early- to mid-January, which is about now. So, it could be Saturday, Tuesday at Duke or Jan. 11 at home against Louisville.
Capel revealed Thursday on his radio show on 93.7 FM that Lowe played the first 12 games with a minor injury after dislocating the ring finger on his shooting hand in a preseason scrimmage against Cincinnati. Lowe’s fingers had been wrapped, but the wrap came off before the Cal game and he responded with 27 points.
There is a feeling among the team that with the wrap off, Lowe’s shooting percentages (38.7 overall, 27.1 from 3-point range) will improve.
Meanwhile, here are five thoughts after the first few ACC games:
1. One after another
The rapid-fire nature of the games to start the month — only two days between tipoffs — means there’s no rest for Capel and his staff after games. He said Wednesday that he planned to spend that evening studying Stanford video.
The Cardinal (9-4, 1-1) look like a better team than Cal, having defeated the Golden Bears, 89-81, on the road. Stanford is in the midst of a two-game East Coast swing after losing at Clemson on Wednesday, 85-71.
“I know a little bit (about Stanford) because I watched them play Cal,” Capel said before he immersed himself in serious video study. “That big kid (7-foot-1, 245-pound Parisian Maxime Raynaud) is really, really freaking good. I was really impressed with him in that Cal game. I heard a lot about him, but that was my first time seeing him play. He’s as good a player as I’ve seen this year.”
Raynaud leads the ACC and is 10th in the nation in scoring (20.8 points per game). He also tops the conference with 11.9 rebounds and is shooting 50% from the field and has made 21 3-pointers. With his scoring and rebounding skills, it’s no surprise he is No. 1 in the nation with 11 double-doubles.
He is supported by Duke transfer Jaylen Blakes (15.2 points) and USC transfer Oziyah Sellers (14.2).
2. The confusing NET
If the Panthers defeat Stanford, they should be ranked in the Associated Press poll before they visit No. 4 Duke on Tuesday. But after Pitt’s rousing comeback from a 16-point deficit against California, the Panthers dropped from No. 10 to No. 13 in the NCAA NET rankings.
Explanation: Defeating Cal at the Pete is only a Quad 3 victory because the Golden Bears are ranked 122nd. Stanford is 85th, another Quad 3 opponent.
Duke (No. 3 in the NET), Louisville (No. 50) and Clemson (No. 32) in the next two weeks will provide stiffer tests and a more accurate gauge. The football team’s journey from 7-0 to 7-6 should have taught everyone to wait before making any definitive statements.
3. Next men up
Pitt dominated Cal so thoroughly in the second half Wednesday that it was difficult to believe they trailed by 11 in the final 100 seconds before halftime. Yet the Panthers went into the locker room at the break down only four.
Big props to backups Papa Kante and Amsel Delalic, who were on the floor at that time.
Kante registered a block, rebound and assist on Zack Austin’s 3-pointer. Delalic snatched two key rebounds and assisted on Guillermo Diaz Graham’s breakaway dunk.
Pitt’s bench may be stronger than expected, and Capel will need it with the ACC grind just beginning.
4. See the USA
Some may consider coast-to-coast travel for regular-season games strange, but nothing is out of bounds anymore in college athletics.
Pitt is in the midst of its initial connection with the ACC’s California teams after Cal and Stanford joined the league last year.
From Pitt’s point of view, there is little history with those schools. The Panthers’ 86-74 victory against Cal was the teams’ fourth all-time meeting and only the second since 1950. The series stands 2-2, with Pitt defeating the Golden Bears in the 2002 NCAA Tournament at the Civic Arena, 63-50.
The first scheduled game was canceled Dec. 28, 1932, because of a snowstorm. And there is a bit of a story that goes with it.
Pitt had lost at Northwestern, 31-22, on Dec. 18, and doubled back to Butler in Indianapolis — the next day — to win, 38-30. Then, the team got back on the train for an intended trip to the West Coast but traveled only as far as Colorado before weather conditions intervened and the train turned back to Pittsburgh.
Those types of excursions were not unusual for the Panthers of Dr. H.C. “Doc” Carlson, the most successful Pitt coach of all-time (367 victories and two national championships from 1922-1953).
“Doc Carlson wanted the team to see the country,” Pitt historian and author Sam Sciullo Jr. said, “let them be exposed to different cultures and places.”
Sciullo said Carlson used to walk up and down the train’s aisle, and if any player was asleep, resting his head on a window, he woke him and demanded he use that window to see the countryside.
5. Stanford/Pitt history
The game with Stanford likewise will only be the fourth in the teams’ series.
Carlson dragged his team to the West Coast in 1931 (a 22-11 victory) and 1949 (a 55-37 loss in San Francisco). Dixon’s Panthers defeated Stanford, 88-67, on a neutral court in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 2013.
Sidebar: Dixon coached Pitt for 13 seasons and is the second-winningest coach in the school’s hoops history (328 victories), but he would have needed to stick around at least another two years beyond 2016 to catch Carlson.
Jerry DiPaola is a TribLive reporter covering Pitt athletics since 2011. A Pittsburgh native, he joined the Trib in 1993, first as a copy editor and page designer in the sports department and later as the Pittsburgh Steelers reporter from 1994-2004. He can be reached at jdipaola@triblive.com.
The University of Pittsburgh men’s basketball team is set to take on Stanford at the Petersen Events Center in a highly anticipated matchup. The Panthers are looking to secure their first 12-2 start to a season in nine years, a feat that would solidify their status as a force to be reckoned with in the college basketball world.Led by head coach Jeff Capel, Pitt has been on a hot streak this season, with impressive wins against top-ranked teams and a strong showing in conference play. The team’s chemistry and talent have been on full display, and fans are eager to see if they can keep up their winning ways against Stanford.
The game promises to be a thrilling showdown between two powerhouse programs, with both teams hungry for a victory. Pitt will need to bring their A-game and continue to execute on both ends of the court to come out on top and make history with a 12-2 start.
Stay tuned for what is sure to be an exciting and intense matchup as the Panthers look to make a statement and continue their journey towards a successful season. Let’s go Pitt! #H2P

Mike Johnson seeking re-election as House speaker with endorsement from President-elect Donald Trump
The House Speaker election is expected to be narrow and contentious. The 20th Amendment stipulates that a new session of Congress begins on Jan. 3.
With each session of Congress passing its own rules, House business is stymied until a Speaker is elected.
With former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., indicating he will not return to his seat despite being reelected in his Pensacola district, that leaves the Republican caucus only able to weather a one-vote defection.
Gaetz called President-elect Trump’s endorsement of current House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., to retain his role “’Art of the Deal’-level practicality” in a post on social media.
“We could never have held up [Kevin] McCarthy two years ago for concessions if a Trump certification hung in the balance. Now, it does,” said Gaetz, whom McCarthy blames for his turbulent ouster in 2023.
So far, Rep. Thomas Massie, a fiscally conservative member from Ashland, Ky., has indicated he will not support Johnson’s bid to remain House speaker, comparing him unfavorably to ex-Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis.
Massie was also a no-vote on Ryan’s speakership, and wrote that the Wisconsinite “went on to offer a fake repeal of ObamaCare, increased spending, backed the deep state, and didn’t fund a [border] wall” – and that Johnson’s bids to “send money to Ukraine, authorize spying on Americans and blow the budget” are comparable.
If other Republicans join Massie in either voting “present” or for a candidate other than Johnson, the House may be at a standstill for some time and unable to conduct other business including their own swearing-in.
One other speaker candidate is Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries of Brooklyn, N.Y.
Mike Johnson, current House speaker, has announced his intention to seek re-election for his position with a strong endorsement from President-elect Donald Trump. In a statement released by the Trump campaign, the President-elect praised Johnson’s leadership and dedication to conservative values, stating that he has been an invaluable ally in advancing the administration’s agenda.
Johnson, who has served as House speaker since 2019, has been a vocal supporter of Trump’s policies and has worked tirelessly to push through key legislation in Congress.
“I am honored to have the support of President-elect Trump as I seek re-election as House speaker,” Johnson said in a press conference. “I am committed to continuing to work with the President to deliver on our promises to the American people and to advance our conservative principles.”
The endorsement from Trump is expected to bolster Johnson’s re-election bid and solidify his position as a key player in the Republican Party. With the support of the President-elect, Johnson is poised to continue leading the House with strength and determination.

Selena’s Murderer Yolanda Saldivar Is Seeking Parole in 2025
Yolanda Saldivar TDCJ / MEGAYolanda Saldívar is seeking parole in 2025 after she was convicted of murdering singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez after 30 years in prison.
Us Weekly confirmed on Monday, December 30, that Saldívar, 64, is currently in the parole review process. Her eligibility date is March 30, 2025. Saldívar is also eligible for inmate visitation, per online records viewed by Us.
The New York Post reported on Sunday, December 29, that Saldívar’s prison record is currently in good standing.
Selena was shot by Saldívar in March 1995 at a motel in Corpus Christi, Texas. While paramedics tried to revive her, Selena died of hypovolemic shock at Corpus Christi Memorial Hospital. She was 23 years old. Selena was survived by her family and her husband, Christopher Pérez, who was also the lead guitarist in her band, Selena y Los Dinos.
Saldívar, who was the Tejano singer’s former fan club president and boutique manager, was arraigned and pleaded not guilty. She previously claimed that the shooting was accidental and that she had intended to commit suicide.
“They made me out to be a monster, and I just want to say, I did not kill Selena,” Saldívar claimed in an interview with 20/20 in 1995. “It was an accident, and my conscience is clear.”
Selena Larry Busacca/Getty ImagesSaldívar was found guilty by a jury of first-degree murder in October 1995. She was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years behind bars. Saldívar has been serving her sentence at the Patrick O’Daniel facility in Texas.
Following Selena’s tragic death, her legacy has continued to live on. Selena’s first English language album, Dreaming of You, was released posthumously just months after her passing. The record debuted on the Billboard 200 debut, making Selena the first Latin artist to do so. Dreaming of You sold more than one million copies.
Two years later, a movie was made about Selena’s life which starred Jennifer Lopez as the Grammy winner. The film launched Lopez into superstardom. In 2020, Netflix dropped a miniseries about Selena starring Walking Dead alum Christian Serratos.
In addition to her story being told through film and TV, Selena has also earned a series of accolades following her death. Selena has sold approximately 18 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling female artists in Latin music. In 2021, the “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” singer was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award at the Grammys. Three years later, Selena was selected as one of the National Medal of Arts recipients by President Joe Biden.
Selena’s Murderer Yolanda Saldivar Is Seeking Parole in 2025It has been nearly 27 years since the tragic death of beloved Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla, and her murderer, Yolanda Saldivar, is reportedly seeking parole in 2025. Saldivar was convicted of first-degree murder in 1995 for fatally shooting Selena at a Days Inn motel in Corpus Christi, Texas.
The murder of Selena shocked the world and left a lasting impact on her fans and loved ones. Saldivar, who was the president of Selena’s fan club and manager of her boutiques, claimed that the shooting was accidental and that she never intended to harm Selena. However, she was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years.
Now, as the parole hearing for Yolanda Saldivar approaches in 2025, many are left wondering if she will be granted early release. Selena’s family has been vocal about their opposition to Saldivar’s potential parole, stating that they believe she is a danger to society and should remain behind bars.
As we await the outcome of Yolanda Saldivar’s parole hearing in 2025, let us remember the legacy of Selena and the impact her music continues to have on fans around the world. May justice be served for Selena and may her memory live on forever.
