  • Mavericks stars Kyrie Irving, Luka Doncic not selected to 2025 NBA All-Star Game

The NBA released the reserves for the 2025 NBA All-Star Game on Thursday evening. For the first time since his rookie season, Luka Doncic is not an All-Star. Neither is Kyrie Irving, who misses out on the All-Star Game for the second straight season.

Injuries have hampered the Dallas Mavericks superstar, as he’s played in just 22 games this season thanks to a litany of ailments, including a calf strain he suffered on Christmas Day against the Minnesota Timberwolves. He hasn’t played since then, costing him his sixth-straight All-Star selection, but he should be returning in the next few weeks.

Irving, meanwhile, has had a tremendous season, averaging 24.2 PPG, 4.9 APG, and 4.6 RPG while nearly shooting 50/40/90. He’s played in the majority of the Mavericks’ games and has helped keep the team afloat, but the coaches felt differently. He’s still waiting to make an All-Star appearance as a Maverick; he technically made one in 2023, soon after being traded to Dallas, but most of his production came with the Brooklyn Nets. He’s an eight-time All-Star in his career.

Doncic got off to a slow start to the season by his standards but had rebounded to still be averaging 28.1 PPG, 8.3 RPG, and 7.8 APG before going down on Christmas. His numbers are All-Star worthy, and if the initial starter ballots were still the deciding factor, he likely would’ve been in, as he finished third among Western Conference guards in voting. The starters are weighted from 50% of the fan vote, 25% of the player vote, and 25% of the vote from a media pool. All-Star reserves are selected entirely by the NBA coaches.

Decades from now, people will be looking at Luka Doncic’s Basketball Reference page and wondering what caused the blip in All-Star and All-NBA appearances. He got off to a torrid pace in his NBA career, making five consecutive All-NBA First-Teams starting from his second season in the NBA, one of few players in NBA history to do so. He likely would’ve been on pace to make another First Team before the injuries, and the NBA’s new 65-game requirement disqualified Doncic for any awards at the end of the season.

But if Doncic returns soon and helps the Mavericks make another late regular-season run with a deep push into the playoffs, all will be forgiven. Doncic entered the season as the favorite to win the MVP, but he said his only goal was to be healthy in the playoffs so he could help bring a championship to Dallas as Dirk Nowitzki did before him.

The 2025 NBA All-Star Game rosters have been announced, and to the surprise of many fans, Mavericks stars Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic have not been selected to participate in the highly anticipated event.

Despite their impressive performances throughout the season, Irving and Doncic were unfortunately left off the roster, leading to disappointment among Mavericks fans and supporters of the two talented players.

Irving, known for his exceptional ball-handling skills and scoring ability, has been a dominant force on the court for the Mavericks this season. Similarly, Doncic, with his remarkable playmaking and scoring prowess, has been a standout player for the team.

While it is disappointing that Irving and Doncic will not be showcasing their talents in the All-Star Game this year, there is no doubt that they will continue to excel and make their mark in the league.

Fans can still support their favorite Mavericks players and enjoy the All-Star festivities as they cheer on the other talented athletes who have been selected to participate in the game. Let’s show our support for Irving and Doncic as they continue to shine bright on the court and represent the Mavericks with pride.

  • Kings’ Domantas Sabonis not selected for 2025 NBA All-Star Game

SACRAMENTO — Sacramento Kings star big man Domantas Sabonis was not selected for this year’s NBA All-Star Game.

Sabonis, a three-time All-Star, is averaging 20.9 points, a league-leading 14.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists, which only trails Nuggets star Nikola Jokic among all big men.

NBA coaches select the reserves after the 10 names for the starters pool were announced last week through a combination of fan voting (50%), media voting (25%) and active player voting (25%).

San Antonio star and reigning rookie of the year Victor Wembanyama is an All-Star for the first time, one of the 14 players announced Thursday night as members of the reserve pool for the Feb. 16 event in San Francisco.

Wembanyama becomes only the fourth Spurs player to make the All-Star Game in his first or second season. The others: Alvin Robertson in 1986, David Robinson in 1990 and 1991, and Tim Duncan in 1998.

There were seven players picked Thursday from each conference. From the Eastern Conference: Boston’s Jaylen Brown, Indiana’s Pascal Siakam, Cleveland’s Darius Garland and Evan Mobley, Detroit’s Cade Cunningham, Milwaukee’s Damian Lillard — last year’s All-Star MVP — and Miami’s Tyler Herro.

From the West: Wembanyama, Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards, the Los Angeles Lakers’ Anthony Davis, the Los Angeles Clippers’ James Harden, Memphis’ Jaren Jackson Jr., Houston’s Alperen Sengun and Oklahoma City’s Jalen Williams.

Wembanyama, Cunningham, Mobley, Herro, Sengun and Williams are first-time All-Stars.

There will be at least 15 players who “start” at the All-Star Game this season. It’s the first year of a new All-Star format, with three games. The 24 All-Stars will be drafted into three teams of eight players apiece by TNT personalities and former NBA greats Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith.

Those three teams will be entered into a four-team tournament, with the remaining squad made up of NBA rookies and second-year players from the Rising Stars event on All-Star Friday. There are two semifinal games, with the winners meeting in a championship game. The games should go quickly; the first team to reach 40 points wins.

Oklahoma City coach Mark Daigneault and an assistant from his staff will coach two of the teams, and Cleveland coach Kenny Atkinson and one of his assistants will lead the others.

Among the notable names who did not make it: Charlotte’s LaMelo Ball — who narrowly missed out on being picked as a starter, but didn’t have enough coach support to be a reserve — along with Atlanta’s Trae Young, Phoenix’s Devin Booker, Dallas’ Kyrie Irving and the Clippers’ Norman Powell.

Despite putting up impressive numbers this season, Domantas Sabonis of the Sacramento Kings has been left off the roster for the 2025 NBA All-Star Game. Sabonis, who is averaging a double-double with 20.5 points and 11.3 rebounds per game, was seen as a strong candidate for the All-Star nod.

Fans and analysts alike have expressed disappointment over Sabonis’ exclusion from the All-Star Game, with many citing his consistent performance and impact on the Kings’ success this season. Despite his snub, Sabonis remains focused on helping his team make a playoff push and continuing to prove his worth as one of the top players in the league.

While Sabonis may not be participating in the All-Star Game this year, his standout play and work ethic have not gone unnoticed. Fans can expect to see him continue to elevate his game and make a strong case for future All-Star selections.

  • Pacers’ Pascal Siakam selected as an NBA All-Star – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana Traffic

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Pacers forward Pascal Siakam was selected as a reserve for the NBA All-Star Game.

This is Siakam’s third All-Star nod, and his first since the 2022-23 season.

He’s averaging 20.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game for the Pacers this season. Siakam has played and started in every game so far.

Siakam is also having easily his best season from beyond the arc, shooting 41.8% from three, a career high.

He had his highest scoring game as a Pacer on Wednesday, putting up 36 points in their win against the Pistons.

After the game, Siakam was asked what it would mean if he was selected as an All-Star.

“I’m blessed to be a part of this team,” Siakam said. “The support that I’ve had since I’ve been here has been just amazing. I don’t think I’ve had an organization just showing so much support from top to bottom but it’s been awesome and I’m so grateful for it. It would mean a lot to represent the Pacers out there in All-Star Weekend.”

His teammate Tyrese Haliburton had no doubt that Siakam deserved to be an All-Star when he was asked on Tuesday.

“It’s no question,” Haliburton said. “Just ask the coaches. Ask other players. It’s not a debate. People just got to use their eyes and watch the game.”

Haliburton added that Pascal’s been helping to lead the charge for the Pacers in flipping their season around. After starting the season 9-14, the Pacers are 17-6 in their last 23 games.

NBA coaches select the All-Star reserves. Haliburton said the coaches typically reward winning and playing the right way, and Siakam does just that.

This is Siakam’s second year and first full season with the Pacers. He was acquired in January 2024 for Bruce Brown, Jordan Nwora, and three first round picks.

The Pacers re-signed Siakam as a free agent in July for a four-year deal worth $189.5 million.

He was critical in the Pacers run to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2024. Siakam led the Pacers in scoring in the postseason, averaging 21.6 points per game.

The All-Star Game is on Sunday, February 16 at 8 p.m. EST.

The Indiana Pacers have another player representing them in the NBA All-Star game this year. Pascal Siakam has been selected to the All-Star team, making it his second appearance in the prestigious event.

Siakam has been a key player for the Pacers this season, averaging 20.1 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game. His versatility on both ends of the court has been a major factor in the team’s success this season.

Fans in Indiana are excited to see Siakam showcase his skills on the big stage and represent the Pacers in the All-Star game. Congratulations to Pascal Siakam on this well-deserved honor!

  • Pelicans rookie Yves Missi selected for Rising Stars Game | Pelicans

New Orleans Pelicans general manager Bryson Graham saw something special in Yves Missi the moment he laid eyes on him back in October 2023 at Baylor.

So Graham told Pelicans executive vice president of basketball operation David Griffin that they should put him on their radar.

They did, drafting him with the No. 21 overall pick eight months later.

Now, Missi — who many thought would be a project — is on everyone’s radar.

He’s been one of the best players in the rookie class, which is why he earned a roster spot for the Rising Stars Game during next month’s NBA All-Star Weekend in San Francisco. The rosters were announced Tuesday.

It’s the sixth straight year the Pelicans have had at least one player in the Rising Stars Game, which consists of rookies and second-year players.

Of the 10 players selected for the rookie team this year, only Jaylen Wells of the Memphis Grizzlies was drafted after Missi.

Miissi is averaging 9 points, 8 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots for the Pelicans, who play the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday at Smoothie King Center.

“He’s just scratching the surface of where we think he can end up,” Pelicans coach Willie Green said in January. “I try not to put a ceiling on these young guys when they come in.”

Missi has started 36 of 44 games, the most of any Pelicans player. He’s also recorded eight double-doubles.

His best game was a 23-point, 12-rebound effort against the Atlanta Hawks. He blocked five shots, a season-high, against the Los Angeles Clippers in late December.

Missi was named Western Conference Rookie of the Month for December. It was a month in which he faced some of the best big men in the league, including Nikola Jokic (Nuggets), Karl-Anthony Towns (Knicks), Alperen Sengun (Rockets), Pascal Siakam (Pacers), Damontas Sabonis (Kings) and Victor Wembanyama (Spurs).

“It’s like a dream coming true, to be honest,” Missi said in January about facing that gauntlet of centers. “It’s always good just having to go coast to coast against them and see what I saw on TV when I was younger.”

NBA All-Star Weekend is set for Feb. 14-16. The Rising Stars Game will be played Feb. 14.

    Schedule changes

The now have a make-up date for the game against the Milwaukee Bucks that was postponed last Wednesday because of snow in New Orleans.

The Pelicans now will host the Bucks at the Smoothie King Center on April 6 at 7:30 p.m. The Pelicans originally were scheduled to host the Orlando Magic that day, but that game has been rescheduled to March 13 at 7 p.m.

The Pelicans’ road game at the Milwaukee Bucks originally was scheduled for April 9 but has been moved to April 10.

Also, the Pelicans’ road game Feb. 5 against the Denver Nuggets now will start at 8 p.m. and will no longer be televised by ESPN. It’ll be shown locally on the Gulf Coast Sports & Entertainment Network.

The New Orleans Pelicans’ rookie sensation Yves Missi has been selected to participate in the Rising Stars Game during NBA All-Star Weekend. The 21-year-old forward has been making waves in his first season in the league, showcasing his impressive skills and athleticism on the court.

Missi, who was selected with the 13th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, has quickly established himself as a key player for the Pelicans, averaging 14 points and 6 rebounds per game. His ability to score from all areas of the court, as well as his defensive prowess, has caught the attention of fans and analysts alike.

The Rising Stars Game, which features the top first and second-year players in the league, will give Missi the opportunity to showcase his talents on a bigger stage and compete against some of the best young talent in the NBA. Pelicans fans should be excited to see their promising rookie represent the team in this exciting event.

Congratulations to Yves Missi on this well-deserved honor, and we can’t wait to see him shine in the Rising Stars Game! #Pelicans #YvesMissi #NBAAllStar

  • Celtics Guard Selected For Rising Stars Battle At All-Star Weekend

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown won’t be the only Boston Celtics representatives at NBA All-Star Weekend in San Francisco.

Members of the Rising Stars rosters were announced Tuesday and third-year Celtics guard JD Davison made the cut. The 22-year-old will join young up-and-comers like Dalton Knecht of the Los Angeles Lakers and Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs for the Feb. 14 showcasing. Davison was among 28 players chosen — 10 rookies, 10 sophomores and seven G Leaguers — to participate.

Davison, a second-round pick in the 2022 draft, has spent most of the season with Boston’s G League affiliate Maine Celtics. He’s been the third-leading scorer in the G League, so far, averaging a career-high 26.5 points on 48.3% shooting from the field with 4.8 rebounds and 8.3 assists through 15 games — impressive enough to earn some All-Star Weekend recognition, but not enough for a major call-up.

Boston hasn’t relied on Davison since drafting the Alabama product three years ago. While developmental players like Neemias Queta and Sam Hauser have escaped the G League stepping stone, Davison has remained put. He’s an explosive athletic, semi-crafty guard with an undersized 6-foot-2 frame that doesn’t help Davison’s struggles to score when given the chance to suit up for head coach Joe Mazzulla.

The Celtics are 47 games into their championship defense and have gone 3-9 in games following a win since Dec. 18. They most recently tumbled to Ime Udoka’s Houston Rockets at TD Garden on Monday night, marking the fifth Boston defeat in its last 10 games. The ongoing slump and inability to replicate last season’s success on both ends of the floor have prompted a hovering palm over the panic button — pending the team’s first red-hot run — and at the very least, a roster transaction of some sort.

    Story continues below advertisement

Jaden Springer, a non-factor who’s spent most of the campaign keeping the bench warm, has been floated as a potential trade candidate. It would help clear up $4 million off the team’s salary cap and allow the franchise to consider giving Davison a promotion. That possibility might be a bit of a stretch considering Davison has attempted only 1.4 shots in the NBA across 25 appearances in the past three years and the Celtics are in a win-now window. But there’s still a chance nonetheless.

Exciting news for Celtics fans! Celtics guard, Jaylen Brown, has been selected to participate in the Rising Stars Challenge at All-Star Weekend. Brown has been a key player for the Celtics this season, showcasing his scoring ability and defensive prowess.

The Rising Stars Challenge features the top first and second-year players in the league, giving fans a glimpse of the future stars of the NBA. Brown’s selection is a testament to his hard work and dedication on the court.

Celtics fans can look forward to seeing Brown compete against other young talents in the league during All-Star Weekend. Make sure to tune in and support our rising star, Jaylen Brown! #Celtics #JaylenBrown #RisingStarsChallenge #NBAAllStar

  • Provost Ian Baucom Selected as Next President of Middlebury College

Executive Vice President and Provost Ian Baucom, who has served the University of Virginia more than a decade, will become the next president of historic Middlebury College in Vermont, the college announced Wednesday.

Baucom will step down as provost in March, 11 years after his hiring as the dean of the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences and three years since his promotion to provost, the University’s chief academic officer.

“Our lives have been blessed by being here in Charlottesville,” Baucom said of his family. “And we will hold that as we move. But at the same time, I am also counting the days. I can’t wait to get to Middlebury and get going.”

UVA President Jim Ryan said Baucom’s contributions to the University have been far-reaching.

“Ian has left an indelible mark on UVA, both from his time as dean and his years as provost,” Ryan said. “Our academic environment has been enriched by his wise and steady leadership and a long list of accomplishments, from improvements to curriculum and advising to investments in research, faculty hires and school leadership. He is someone who is deeply motivated by mission, which made him a perfect fit for UVA, and now for Middlebury College.

“Ian will be greatly missed on Grounds but will remain a dear friend and lifelong champion of higher education.”

In Vermont, Baucom will oversee a campus of 2,900 undergraduates that, like Virginia, is deeply enmeshed in the country’s history. Founded in 1800, Middlebury College was created to train young men to serve the new nation in the ministry and other critical professions. And, akin to UVA, the liberal arts college has since grown to become a leader in national and global education.

The similarities are not coincidental for a scholar who has studied history and served at historic schools – including 17 years at Duke University – as they grow into modern educational institutions.

“I am fascinated by the commitment to the future,” Baucom told UVA Today from his office in Madison Hall recently. “The future flows from the present and begins in the past. Both institutions are part of the fabric of American history and, increasingly, world history. It’s powerful, and I love it.”

You Have To Be Able To Fall in Love

Baucom said one of the key lessons he’s learned from Ryan is how important it is to fall in love with the institution you serve.

“These are terrific leadership opportunities that come with a lot of responsibility,” Baucom recounted from a conversation with the president. “There are many, many good days, and there are days that are difficult. What carries you through them is, do you think you can fall in love with the place, with its people?”

That rang true to him because Baucom fell in love with UVA long ago, and there were many good days, and there were tough times.

“Without any question whatsoever, it was the loss of our three students and the tragic shooting and wounding of two others,” he said.

In November 2022, a gunman on Grounds fatally shot football student-athletes D’Sean Perry, Devin Chandler and Lavel Davis Jr., and wounded students Mike Hollins and Marlee Morgan. What got Baucom through, he said, was the bottomless love from students and the unending support from faculty and staff.

“Good people can walk into the hardest of times, and walk through them,” he said. “And on that front, I would say the colleagues I get to work with, and the students who we are so fortunate to share this place with, showed courage and resilience. The compassion of our students carried us even as we knew we had a responsibility to hold them and walk with them.”

    Early Experiences Shaped Later Research

Baucom was born to missionaries in South Africa. As a child, he began to see the racism and oppression of the nation’s apartheid government, an experience that would later influence his academic research.

Baucom earned a political science degree from Wake Forest University. At Yale University, he earned a master’s in African studies and a doctorate in English.

In 2014, Baucom was named dean of the College, where he oversaw efforts to hire 150 new faculty members and to overhaul the curriculum to better meet the needs of modern education. He also spearheaded a stronger commitment to research, a focus that has helped UVA become one of the country’s top research institutions. In his tenure as provost, Baucom has hired five deans and a vice president for research.

    Also on his watch:

    • Extensive renovations of academic spaces

    • The growth of the Emmet-Ivy Corridor

    • The opening of the School of Data Science’s new building

    • A bolstering of academic advising, particularly for students before they declare majors

    • The creation of the Task Force on Religious Diversity and Belonging

Along the way he’s written three scholarly books and edited others, largely centering on his research specialties of colonialism and slavery. Yet GoodReads.com, a website devoted to showcasing literature to readers, had this to say of the author: “Ian Baucom’s most popular book is ‘Through the Skylight,’” a book for young readers.

He had not seen that internet entry, and he chuckled.

“If you ask my children what my most famous work is, that’s the answer they would give you,” Baucom said. “And you know, fortunately, there are more children in the world than there are English professors.” Hence the popularity.

During a two-month assignment in Venice with his family, Baucom ran out of traditional bedtime stories. So, to educate his children about their temporary home, Baucom started writing a tale set in Venice and starring characters based on his kids.

“We wanted them to understand something about the history of Venice and to take them to art museums and take them to churches and piazzas and to understand the lagoon,” he said. “And so, the city became somewhat of a character in the book, and it was a way of hopefully helping them get excited about the city, because the kids who are the characters in the novel spent a lot of time in museums, where pieces of art come to life.”

    ‘It’s the People’

Before he accepted the Middlebury presidency, he talked it over with his wife and six children, who are now mostly college-age and beyond. Some of the couple’s children are in Virginia, while others are in North Carolina. “They’re at the age where they move around,” he said.

He wanted this decision to be a family decision, he said. And all supported the move to Middlebury. Still, he knows he’ll pine for Charlottesville.

I am thrilled to share the exciting news that our very own Provost Ian Baucom has been selected as the next President of Middlebury College! Baucom, who has been a dedicated member of our community for many years, has consistently demonstrated strong leadership, innovative thinking, and a deep commitment to academic excellence.

His vision for higher education is both inspiring and forward-thinking, and I have no doubt that he will bring the same level of passion and dedication to his new role as President of Middlebury College.
