Benny Blanco proposed to the singer, 32, with a stunning marquise engagement ring earlier this month after a year of dating, and the music producer, 36, had a specific image in his mind when designing the sparkler.
Blanco teamed up with jewelry duo Katherine Theofilos Claster and Stephanie Theofilos, the designers behind Abril Barret, to create the totally custom and special piece: a marquise center stone in a cathedral setting with an oversized brilliant-cut eternity band.
The music producer chose the shape in reference to the pop star’s 2015 song “Good for You.” @selenagomez/Instagram Blanco teamed up with the jewelry duo behind Abril Barret for the stunning, cathedral-set design. The designers tell us Blanco knew he wanted a marquise shape from “day one” and felt the stone was a soulmate. The duo has worked with Blanco for a few years and have a “synergy” with him that “just works,” Theofilos Claster tells Page Six Style exclusively, so when it came to creating perhaps the most important piece of jewelry, the collaboration was seamless.
“We started the project earlier this year. Benny, a wonderful creative himself, had specific inspiration, including the center cut, the marquise,” Theofilos Claster says.
“We worked closely with multiple approaches before our final ring,” she adds. “Benny had a very sharp idea of what he ultimately envisioned. We combined it with our Abril Barret sentiment to capture the essence of an heirloom piece with a modern hand.”

The shape — an elongated oval with sharp ends — dates back to the 18th century and King Louis XV, who commissioned a stone fashioned in the shape of his lover Marquise de Pompadour’s lips.

In order to find the specific stone that takes center stage on Gomez’s ring, the trio of Blanco, Theofilos Claster and Theofilos worked together to find an “exceptional” piece.
“There is an inexplicable energy within every natural stone; it’s vital to ensure that its vibration, wavelength, energetic presence is in perfect harmony with the client’s,” Theofilos Claster says.

As for the design, Theofilos Claster tells us there are “a handful of special symbols folded into the design of the ring,” including the “intention of optimizing light.”
She concludes, “We wanted the ring to have an elegant lightness for a timeless and forever girl.”

Gomez also shared a video seemingly from the same evening, in which she and Blanco shared a smooch.
She included a photo of the pair posing while peering at a security footage monitor at a T.J. Maxx store. The gallery was rounded out by a picture of Gomez and her younger sister enjoying New York City restaurant Serendipity 3’s iconic frozen hot chocolate, and a mirror selfie displaying Gomez’s engagement ring.
