Bruins call up goalie ahead of Senators game
BOSTON — After interim coach Joe Sacco hinted that Jeremy Swayman was dealing with something health-related when he didn’t return for the third period of the Bruins’ loss to the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday, Boston called up a goalie from the AHL.
The Bruins officially summoned Michael DiPietro from Providence less than three hours from the start of Boston’s game with Ottawa on Thursday at 7 p.m. at TD Garden.
Boston didn’t have a morning skate on Thursday after playing on the road Wednesday so there’s been no update on Swayman’s status.
DiPietro is 14-5-3 with a 1.95 goals against average and a .930 save percentage for Providence this season. The 25-year-old is second in the AHL in GAA and fourth in save percentage.
He was originally a third-round pick of the Vancouver Canucks in 2017. This will be his first stint in the NHL.
When Swayman came out after the second period, the Bruins were down 4-1, so it seemed logical for Sacco to change goalies to give himself the option to start Swayman again at home on Thursday.
But after the game, Sacco said health was another reason for the change.
“He was dealing with something minor,” Sacco said. “We thought it would be best, with how the game was going, to get him out of there. We’ll see how he is tomorrow.”

The Senators just took down the Bruins on Saturday, and our NHL picks expect a repeat performance at TD Garden on Thursday night.
The Ottawa Senators have topped the Boston Bruins in each of their first two meetings this season, and the Atlantic Division rivals will hit the ice at TD Garden again on Thursday, January 23.
With Boston reeling along a 3-6-2 stretch and Ottawa ripe for improved puck luck, my Senators vs. Bruins predictions and NHL picks are calling for the Sens to win again tonight in Beantown.
Senators vs Bruins prediction
My Senators pick
Senators moneyline (-123 at Pinnacle)My Senators analysis
The Ottawa Senators topped the Boston Bruins 6-5 in a shootout on Saturday, and it was the Sens dominating the play with a 63.0 Corsi For percentage and 64.8 expected goals percentage at 5-on-5 and 48 overall shots to Boston’s 28.Ottawa has been solid in the underlying metrics all season at 5-on-5, and they’ve continued the trend out of the holiday break with a ninth-ranked 52.1 CF% and middling 51.5 xGF%. The issue for the Sens during the 6-5-2 run has been a league-low 4.9 team shooting percentage at 5-on-5.
Boston is the perfect opponent for improved puck luck to kick in because the Bruins are playing the second leg of a back-to-back set, and both No. 1 Jeremy Swayman and Joonas Korpisalo saw time during Wednesday’s 5-1 loss to the Devils.
Additionally, Boston has been the complete opposite of Ottawa out of the holiday break.
The Bruins sport a 27th-ranked 45.4 CF% and 29th-ranked 43.6 xGF% at 5-on-5, but they’ve been bailed out by tremendous puck luck reinforced by their fifth-ranked 102.0 PDO. In particular, allowing the third-most expected goals per 60 minutes at 5-on-5 (3.08) and also sporting the 10th-highest team save percentage (.922) is unsustainable.
Of course, the Bruins are also without their No. 1 defenseman. The loss of Charlie McAvoy (upper body) is significant. He plays in all situations with a team-high 23:41 per night, and Boston has already been without top-four stalwart Hampus Lindholm (lower body) since mid-November.
Ottawa makes it three straight wins against Boston tonight.
Senators vs Bruins odds analysis
There has been action on the Ottawa side of this moneyline, and Pinnacle has moved the number from Sens -115 at opening to -123 as of Thursday morning. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was additional Ottawa support based on the Boston starting goalie, too.
Both teams are trending to the Under, and it aligns with the highlighted poor team shooting percentage for Ottawa and excellent goaltending from the Bruins. There has been a small move to the Under 5.5 at Pinnacle, with the shop opening Under 5.5 -103 and the vig increasing to -109 as of Thursday morning.

Tonight’s NHL game features a matchup between the Ottawa Senators and the Boston Bruins. Both teams are looking to secure a much-needed win, but who will come out on top? Here are our predictions, picks, and odds for tonight’s game:The Ottawa Senators have struggled this season, currently sitting near the bottom of the standings. However, they have shown flashes of potential and have the ability to surprise their opponents. The Senators will need a strong performance from their top players, including Brady Tkachuk and Thomas Chabot, if they want to pull off an upset against the Bruins.
On the other hand, the Boston Bruins are one of the top teams in the league and have been playing well recently. Led by their star players such as Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak, the Bruins have a potent offense and solid defense. They will be looking to continue their winning streak and secure another important victory tonight.
In terms of odds, the Bruins are favored to win this game. However, hockey is a unpredictable sport and anything can happen on any given night. Our prediction is that the Bruins will come out on top in a close game, but the Senators will put up a fight and keep it competitive.
Our pick: Boston Bruins to win
Odds: Boston Bruins -150, Ottawa Senators +130Make sure to tune in to tonight’s game to see who comes out victorious in this exciting matchup between the Senators and Bruins. Let us know your predictions and picks in the comments below!

The Ottawa Senators (24-19-4) visit the Boston Bruins (23-20-6) Thursday. Puck drop from TD Garden is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NHL odds around the Senators vs. Bruins odds and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.
Season series: Senators lead 2-0
The Senators snapped a 2-game win streak Tuesday with a 5-0 loss at the New York Rangers, failing to cover as +110 underdogs with the Under (5.5) cashing. It marks the fourth time in the last 10 games that Ottawa has been shut out.
Boston has dropped 2 of its last 3 after falling 5-1 at New Jersey Wednesday. The Bruins, who were outshot 35-23, were +190 underdogs as the Over (5.5) hit midway in the third period. C Morgan Geekie scored the first goal of the game — in the opening frame — but New Jersey scored 4 times in the second and once in the third to run away with it.

Senators at Bruins projected goalies
Leevi Merilainen (6-3-1, 2.32 GAA, .914 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Jeremy Swayman (15-16-4, 3.00 GAA, .896 SV%, 2 SO)
Merilainen has been in net 6 of the Senators’ last 7 games with usual starter Linus Ulmark dealing with a back injury. Merilainen is 4-2 with a 2.17 GAA and a .920 SV% (160 saves against 174 shots) in that span. The Finn rookie will be looking to rebound from Tuesday’s 5-0 loss at MSG. He did allow 5 goals to the Bruins against 28 shots Saturday but managed to stop all 3 shootout attempts in a Senators 6-5 victory — Ottawa was a -136 home favorite and the Over (5.5) hit early in the second period.
There is a question on who will start in goal for the Bruins. Starter Jeremy Swayman was pulled after the second period in Wednesday’s loss after allowing 4 goals — 2 on power plays — on 28 shots. “He was dealing with something minor, so we thought it be best the way the game was going was to get him out (of) there after the second period,” coach Joe Sacco said postgame. If the Anchorage native doesn’t start, look for backup Joonas Korpisalo (8-4-2, 2.88 GAA, .891 SV%, 2 SO) to tend the pipes.

Rangers move closer to wild-card spot after destruction of Senators
Entrenched in the Eastern Conference wild-card race, the Rangers are making their push.
A 5-0 rout of the Senators on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden extended their season-best point streak to nine games. The win not only bumped the Blueshirts up to just two points out of the second wild-card spot, but it also prevented Ottawa, currently occupying the first spot, from widening their lead.
Every time the Rangers have stepped on the ice since the new year began, a big-game aura has followed.
The Rangers celebrate Alexis Lafreniere’s goal in the first period of their 5-0 win over the Senators on Jan. 21, 2025. Robert Sabo for New York Post That’s what happens when your season reaches the brink of ruin and you’re fighting to make up for it.
Though the Rangers have rather consistently answered the call in these high-stakes contests, and it’s allowed them to bulldoze their way back into contention after their season was all but dead in the water.
“Defensively, I think one of the best games of the season,” goalie Igor Shesterkin said after making 20 saves to extend his shutout streak to 164:43, following a 1-0 win over the Blue Jackets on Saturday.
Tuesday night was a gritty win by the Rangers, who stayed the course despite having two goals called back through the first two periods.
This all against a Senators team that had won five of its past six games entering the matchup.
The shutout victory counted as the Rangers’ second in the past three games, as well as their fifth of the season, and the fifth time in Shesterkin’s career he has had back-to-back shutouts.
Igor Shesterkin guards the net as Ottawa’s Ridly Greig looks to get off a shot during the Rangers’ shutout win over the Senators. Robert Sabo for New York Post The Rangers were scoreless and then had a 2-0 lead when Ottawa successfully challenged for offside both times, the first an early goal from Sam Carrick and the second a snipe from Arthur Kaliyev.
Instead of letting frustration play out on the ice, they continued to push offensively and were rewarded for it.
After Kaliyev made it a 2-0 game less than two minutes into the middle frame, the Rangers fended off back-to-back power plays from the Senators to take the lead into the third.
Will Cuylle (50) scores a goal during the third period of the Rangers’ blowout win over the Senators on Jan. 21, 2025. Robert Sabo for New York Post Adam Edstrom then fed Matt Rempe, who flicked a backhander past Ottawa goalie Anton Forsberg to kick off a three-goal final frame for the Blueshirts.
“You’re thinking in the back of your head it’s one of those nights,” head coach Peter Laviolette said of the pair of overturned goals. “But our guys were just really focused. I thought the work was really good.”
A fracas that broke out after Brady Tkachuk barreled into Shesterkin pumped some adrenaline into the game, but only the home team cashed in on it.
After Shesterkin went after Tkachuk for the infraction and the Rangers earned a power play, Michael Amadio knocked the star Russian goalie down behind his net to force the Senators to defend five-on-three for 33 seconds.
Artemi Panarin then ripped his 20th goal of the season short side on Forsberg for the 4-0 lead before Will Cuylle capitalized with the five-on-four edge shortly after.
“I just got a couple punches from Tkachuk,” Shesterkin said. “To be honest, this was [from his] hit on me. Not really enjoy that, because I was between the pipe and him. I didn’t want to jump there, but I saw he get [inaudible] on a fight between our guy and their guy, so I just tried to hold him, but he wanted to fight. It’s tough for me because I cannot drop my gloves. If I do that, I will go to locker room.”
The New York Rangers took a giant step closer to securing a wild-card spot in the playoffs after a dominant performance against the Ottawa Senators. The Rangers came out firing on all cylinders, scoring early and often to secure a decisive victory. The offensive firepower of the Rangers was on full display, with goals coming from all corners of the lineup. Artemi Panarin, Chris Kreider, and Mika Zibanejad all found the back of the net, while goaltender Igor Shesterkin stood tall in net, making key saves to preserve the lead.
With this win, the Rangers now sit just a few points out of a wild-card spot, putting themselves in prime position to make a late-season push for the playoffs. The team’s confidence is sky-high, and they are playing some of their best hockey of the season at just the right time.
Fans are buzzing with excitement as the Rangers continue to climb the standings and inch closer to a postseason berth. With momentum on their side, the Rangers are a team to watch as they make a strong push for playoff contention.

Senators vs Rangers Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game
The Ottawa Senators have won five of their last six games, and that’s thanks in large part to their attention to detail defensively. Johnny Lazarus believes the great D can continue in a low-scoring game against the Rangers.
The Ottawa Senators have seemed to have found a winning formula. After a tough start to the New Year, losing four straight games, the Senators have now won five out of their last six and have collected points in seven of their last eight games.
The Senators have done an outstanding job defending over their recent run and my Senators vs. Rangers predictions calls for a low-scoring contest.
Find out more about my free NHL picks for January 21.
Senators vs Rangers prediction
My Senators pick
Under 5.5 (+102 at Pinnacle)My Senators analysis
Leevi Merilainen has been quite the story lately for this Ottawa Senators team. After getting the opportunity due to a Linus Ullmark injury, Merilainen has taken over the crease. After not playing any games in the NHL during the 2023-24 season, Merilainen has now gotten in nine games for Ottawa this year and has earned a 6-2-1 record. Not only is he winning games, but he’s also boasting a .917 save percentage with a 2.20 goals-against average.
Merilainen’s numbers have been incredibly impressive this season, but even more so in his last five starts. During this span, he is 4-0-1 with an unreal .940 save percentage and a 1.57 goals-against average. As a team, the Senators are allowing just 2.00 goals against over their last eight games and their penalty kill has been excellent as well.
Offensively, the group hasn’t been scoring as much as they would like, averaging just 2.38 goals per game in this span, but as long as they’re winning games, they don’t care how they’re doing it. Shane Pinto and Claude Giroux are leading the way during this stretch, both of who have notched six points, Pinto with two goals and four helpers while Giroux hasn’t found the back of the net, he’s been a bit of an apple tree handing out six assists.
One negative, but could be turned into a positive is Ottawa’s power play as of late. They’ve scored just one goal on the man-advantage in their last five games on a total of 13 attempts. While that might sound bad, the positive is that they’re still finding ways to win despite not scoring on the power play.
Senators vs Rangers odds analysis
The last time Ottawa was in Madison Square Garden they didn’t get what they deserved. They were the much better team that night, outshooting the New York Rangers by a margin of 41-18, but they had a hard time beating Igor Shesterkin.
Shesterkin is coming off a few days of rest and a shutout win, so he might be getting into a bit of a groove. On the flip side, the Rangers haven’t necessarily been firing on all cylinders offensively lately.
This game should be a bit low-scoring as both teams are in desperate need of the two points to try and climb the Eastern Conference standings. The under has hit in eight of the Senators’ last 10 games and I imagine they will do whatever they can to limit the Rangers offensively tonight, just like they did the last time they were in New York City.

The Ottawa Senators head to the Big Apple to take on the New York Rangers. These Eastern Conference opponents are both surging as of late, and are neck and neck in a tight playoff race. There are lots of games left to go but this one feels crucial. To get you set for the action, here are our Senators vs Rangers predictions.
We know it’s been a disappointment of a season for New York so far, but by no means are they out of things. They have been playing great hockey recently, as they in the midst of an 8-game point streak, where they have gone 5-0-3. This is huge, as they have gathered 12 points from a possible 16 and are remaining a threat in the playoff hunt. They are gaining momentum and confidence, and the fact remains that they have a solid team overall that should be higher than where it currently is. I think they should be able to take down this Ottawa team, which has been great itself. The Senators are not a league-leading threat even with a 5-0-1 stretch of hockey, and the Rangers are on home ice which is always a boost in one of the best buildings in the league. Make no mistake, this should be a close game, but our Senators vs Rangers pick leans towards a New York win.

Tuesday night is the ultimate opportunity for NHL fans, with an eight-game slate of thrilling matchups that fans eagerly anticipate. The game that sticks out is an original six matchup between the fiery Ottawa Senators and the emerging New York Rangers.
For bettors, this matchup provides a chance to capitalize on some of our recent strong trends, like our 15-10 record on our last 25 picks and our 21-15 record on our last 36 player prop picks.
All betting lines are from Bet365 and are subject to change. Hockey is a difficult sport to predict so please gamble responsibly.
Bet: Artemi Panarin anytime goal (+170), Senators Rangers Under 5.5 goals (+100), Rangers ML (-125), Igor Shesterkin Over 25.5 saves (-115)
The Blueshirts have started to pick things up since the calendar turned to 2025 with New York recording a 6-1-3 record and totaling 15 points, which is tied for the most in the league during that span.
Ottawa has also started playing at an elite level with their defence carrying the load with a 5-3-2 record, the sixth-best goals against average at 2.40 but also the fifth-worst goals per game average at 2.10 over their last ten games.
The Rangers recent run of success has been headlined by their offence which has been carried by superstar winger Artemi Panarin, who has three goals and six assists for nine points in his last ten games.

The 33-year-old veteran has abused the Sens in the past with goals in four straight matchups as well as points in 12 of their last 14 matchups. He’s totalled eight goals and 13 points for 21 points over that 14-game stretch and with his recent hot streak makes him a solid option to find the back of the net on Tuesday.
Despite Panarin likely scoring, we expect this game to be low-scoring as the Senators have struggled on offence as of late and have done so all season on the road with a 2.52 goals per road game average which lands them bottom seven in the NHL.
This should help the Rangers stay hot and edge out another win with Igor Shesterkin playing a big role. The New York netminder has a 4-1-1 record, a 1.82 goals against average of 1.82 and a .942 save percentage in six career starts versus Ottawa.

The New York Rangers secured a hard-fought victory over the Ottawa Senators in a low-scoring affair, thanks to the stellar performances of Artemi Panarin and Igor Shesterkin.Panarin, the Rangers’ star forward, continued his impressive season by scoring the game-winning goal in the third period. His goal showcased his incredible skill and ability to come through in clutch moments.
Shesterkin, the Rangers’ young goaltender, was equally impressive, making key saves throughout the game to keep the Senators at bay. His strong play between the pipes was crucial in securing the win for the Rangers.
Despite the low-scoring nature of the game, both teams played with intensity and determination, making for an exciting matchup. The Rangers’ victory showcased their resilience and ability to come out on top in close games.
With Panarin and Shesterkin leading the way, the Rangers look poised to make a strong push towards the playoffs. Their chemistry and talent on the ice make them a formidable force in the league, and fans can’t wait to see what they accomplish next.

#Panarin #Shesterkin #Rangers #Senators #LowScoring #AffairDoug Collins, a Key Trump Impeachment Player, Will Face Senators as V.A. Pick
Former Representative Doug Collins, an Air Force Reserve chaplain who defended President Trump during his first impeachment investigation, is set to testify in a confirmation hearing on Tuesday morning after being chosen by Mr. Trump to lead the Veterans Affairs Department.
Mr. Collins, a Navy veteran and fast-talking former pastor, is set to appear before the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee as the first potential cabinet official to face confirmation hearings after Mr. Trump took office. His hearing was delayed by a week because of an incomplete background check.
Like many of Mr. Trump’s other cabinet selections, including Pete Hegseth, his nominee to oversee the Defense Department, Mr. Collins reflects the new president’s priorities in filling out agency leadership for his second term, with personal loyalty central to each selection.
Mr. Collins is not expected to face a difficult confirmation fight, in part because of the bipartisan and apolitical nature of much of the department’s work managing a sprawling health system and veterans’ benefits.
Dr. David Shulkin, the former V.A. secretary who was the lone Obama administration holdover in Mr. Trump’s first-term cabinet before being pushed out of the job, said in an interview that Mr. Collins would most likely need to focus on the same priorities as his predecessor, Denis McDonough.
“Because the issues the V.A. deals with are systemic and complex, and unfortunately the same ones that were there when the last secretary was in,” Dr. Shulkin said.
Mr. Collins is in some ways an unusual choice. Previous V.A. secretaries have had long military careers, or held senior roles at the Defense Department or the Veterans Affairs Department itself. In the House, Mr. Collins did not serve on the Veterans’ Affairs or Armed Services Committees.
As a member of the Air Force Reserve, Mr. Collins deployed to Iraq, visiting with injured service members at Balad Air Base.
Mr. Trump’s experience fending off impeachment inquiries during and after his first term heavily influenced how he chose political allies. Other House Republicans who defended him in the first impeachment inquiry were also chosen to serve in his cabinet, including Representative Elise Stefanik of New York and former Representatives Lee Zeldin of New York and John Ratcliffe of Texas.
“You have been so great,” Mr. Trump told Mr. Collins in a packed room of supporters at the White House after the Senate voted to acquit him.
In 2019, before the acquittal, Mr. Trump pressed Gov. Brian Kemp of Georgia to name Mr. Collins to the Senate seat vacated by Johnny Isakson. Mr. Kemp instead named Kelly Loeffler, a businesswoman. Mr. Collins ran against, and lost to, Ms. Loeffler in a special election for her seat in 2020. Mr. Trump chose Ms. Loeffler last month to lead the Small Business Administration.
Even with his zeal to protect Mr. Trump during his first term, Mr. Collins nurtured a reputation for working with Democrats, coauthoring criminal justice reform legislation with Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York, now the top House Democrat.
Some of Mr. Collins’s duties at the Veterans Affairs Department may involve divisive health care policies. A second Trump administration may seek to reverse a Biden administration rule allowing the department to provide abortions to veterans when a pregnancy resulted from rape or incest, or when the life of a pregnant woman is at risk.
But much of Mr. Collins’s portfolio will likely involve seemingly intractable problems that have trailed past secretaries from Republican and Democratic administrations, including behavioral health access.
A report published by the department last month showed that there were more than 6,400 suicides among veterans in 2022, fewer than 12 of the 14 prior years but a slight increase from the year before. The number of homeless veterans dropped to a record low under President Joseph R. Biden Jr., but remained above 32,000 between January 2023 and January 2024.
Dr. Shulkin said that atop Mr. Collins’s list would be a budget deficit that has caused the department to slow hiring. That has risked its ability to care for the nearly 900,000 veterans brought into the system through legislation signed by Mr. Biden that expanded medical benefits for veterans exposed to toxins from burning pits of trash on military bases.
“There’s a big backlog of demands and needs,” Dr. Shulkin said.
Like past secretaries, Mr. Collins will also likely need to tend to aging V.A. facilities with outdated medical equipment and record-keeping systems. The department oversees roughly 1,200 sites across the country that serve almost nine million veterans.
Mr. Collins on Tuesday is likely to be pressed about his views of private medical care for veterans. During Mr. Trump’s first term, the department began allowing veterans to seek medical care outside of traditional V.A. hospitals, an effort intended to give more flexibility to patients.
But critics have said that continuing to push veterans out of the V.A. system could compromise the integrity of its own health care.
“There’s this grass is greener on the other side of the field sensibility to it,” Joe Plenzler, a retired Marine Corps officer and veterans’ advocate, said. “What the data show is that when veterans get care at the V.A., they’re happier with it and get better-quality care.”
Were Mr. Collins to continue the first Trump administration’s push, Mr. Plenzler said, it could “turn the V.A. into an insurance company.”
In a dramatic turn of events, Doug Collins, a key player in President Trump’s impeachment proceedings, is set to face senators once again, but this time in a different role – as the nominee for the position of Veterans Affairs (V.A.) Secretary.Collins, a former Republican congressman from Georgia, gained national attention for his vocal defense of President Trump during the impeachment hearings in the House of Representatives. Now, he will have the opportunity to showcase his leadership abilities and policy priorities as he goes through the confirmation process in the Senate.
As a staunch supporter of the president, Collins is likely to face tough questions from Democratic senators about his views on important V.A. issues such as healthcare for veterans, mental health services, and accountability within the department. However, his experience in Congress and his track record of advocating for veterans’ rights could work in his favor during the confirmation process.
The outcome of Collins’ nomination will undoubtedly have significant implications for the V.A. and the millions of veterans who rely on its services. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as Collins prepares to make his case to the Senate.

Elise Stefanik to face senators at confirmation hearing for U.N. ambassador today
Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik will face senators’ questions on Tuesday as she defends her record and qualifications to become the next U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
Stefanik, one of President Trump’s most reliable allies in Congress, goes before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations for her confirmation hearing less than 24 hours after Mr. Trump was sworn into office. Mr. Trump hopes his key Cabinet picks will sail through confirmation and take their posts once he’s president on Jan. 20. Stefanik is likely to be confirmed when the full Senate takes up a vote.
Stefanik, 40, would be the youngest-ever U.S. ambassador to the UN. The New York Republican has served in a leadership position as Republican conference chair, and she was on the House Armed Services Committee and House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. And that skillset honed in Congress will serve her well, said John Alterman, senior vice president and director of the Middle East program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
Alterman said Stefanik brings some of the most important qualities a UN ambassador can have — a close relationship with the president and an ability to communicate and execute his policies.

“The most important part of being a representative is having a relationship to the president, being able to speak for the president, and speak for the administration’s policies,” Alterman said. “I think she is very good at thinking about messaging, she understands the president’s instincts and he likes her.”
“And I think the political skill that you pick up being in Congress ends up being really helpful when you’re working in the UN,” Alterman continued. “I mean, a lot of it is about building coalitions, about neutralizing opposition, about finding compromises. All those kinds of things are skills that Congress and other kinds of political experience is great for.”
Trump’s pick to represent the U.S. at the UN is also one of the institution’s most vocal critics. Stefanik has blasted the UN as antisemitic, lambasting its approach to Israel in the wake of Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023 terrorist attack.
After the UN in September overwhelmingly passed a nonbinding resolution demanding that Israel end its “its unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory” within 12 months, Stefanik said the UN’s “antisemitic rot is on full display as it punishes Israel for defending itself.” Stefanik has been highly critical of the Biden administration’s handling of the situation in the Middle East, and she was the first high-ranking House member to visit Israel after Hamas’ attack. She will no doubt play a role in the aftermath of the ceasefire deal between Hamas and Israel that took effect this weekend. .
Stefanik has championed Mr. Trump’s “America first” messaging and agenda, insisting the United States needs to focus its spending, energy and attention on issues directly affecting the U.S. While Stefanik has supported military assistance to Ukraine in the past and voted to sanction Russia before it expanded its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, she has opposed recent, additional aid. In April 2024, she was one of 112 Republicans to vote against a $61 billion aid package for Ukraine.
When Mr. Trump announced her as his pick for the UN, Stefanik said she is “ready to advance President Donald Jr. Trump’s restoration of America first peace through strength leadership on the world stage on day one.”
Alterman said he thinks people “underestimate her communication skills.”
“I think she’s very smart and savvy,” Alterman said. “And having an ambassador to the UN who can understand the impact of her words and actions advances the administration’s agenda.”
Who is Elise Stefanik?
Elected to represent New York’s 21st Congressional District in 2014, Stefanik was the youngest Republican woman to join Congress at the age of 30. She has easily won reelection in her upstate New York district ever since. As GOP conference chair, Stefanik has been the highest-ranking woman in the House.
Born and raised in upstate New York, Stefanik was the first in her immediate family to earn a college degree, according to her office. She graduated from Harvard University, where she studied government.
In her 20s, she worked in the White House on President George W. Bush’s Domestic Policy Council.
Stefanik and her husband have one son.
