• Why Detroit Tigers deal just makes sense

The Detroit Tigers recently made a trade that has left many fans and analysts scratching their heads, but when you take a closer look, it actually makes perfect sense.

The Tigers agreed to send outfielder Cameron Maybin to the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for a minor league pitcher. While Maybin was a solid player for the Tigers, the move makes sense for a few reasons.

First, Maybin is set to become a free agent after the 2017 season, and the Tigers likely did not see him as a long-term solution in their outfield. By trading him now, they were able to get something in return for him rather than letting him walk away for nothing in the offseason.

Second, the Tigers are in the midst of a rebuilding phase, and acquiring a young pitcher in exchange for Maybin fits in with their long-term plans. By adding a promising prospect to their farm system, the Tigers are positioning themselves for future success.

Finally, the Tigers have a surplus of outfielders, making Maybin expendable. With players like Justin Upton, J.D. Martinez, and Tyler Collins already in the mix, the Tigers can afford to part ways with Maybin without significantly impacting their roster.

While the trade may not have been a blockbuster deal, it was a smart move for the Tigers given their current situation. By making this deal, the Tigers have positioned themselves well for the future while also clearing up some roster space in the present.

  • Why Outsourcing IT to an MSP Makes Sense for Growing Businesses

Why Outsourcing IT to an MSP Makes Sense for Growing Businesses

In today’s fast-paced and technology-driven world, businesses of all sizes are constantly looking for ways to streamline their operations and stay ahead of the competition. For growing businesses, in particular, managing and maintaining an in-house IT department can be a daunting and costly task. This is where outsourcing IT to a managed service provider (MSP) can make a lot of sense.

MSPs are companies that specialize in providing IT services and support to businesses on a subscription basis. By outsourcing their IT needs to an MSP, growing businesses can benefit from a wide range of services and expertise without the high overhead costs associated with hiring and managing an in-house IT team.

One of the key reasons why outsourcing IT to an MSP makes sense for growing businesses is cost savings. By partnering with an MSP, businesses can avoid the costs of hiring and training IT staff, purchasing and maintaining hardware and software, and dealing with unexpected IT issues that can disrupt their operations. MSPs typically offer flexible pricing plans that can be customized to fit a business’s specific needs and budget, making it easier for growing businesses to scale their IT services as they grow.

Another benefit of outsourcing IT to an MSP is access to a team of highly skilled and experienced IT professionals. MSPs employ a team of experts who are trained in the latest technologies and best practices, allowing businesses to benefit from their knowledge and expertise without having to invest in ongoing training and certifications for in-house staff. This can help growing businesses stay ahead of the curve and adapt to the rapidly changing IT landscape.

Additionally, partnering with an MSP can help growing businesses improve their overall IT security and compliance. MSPs have access to advanced security tools and technologies that can help businesses protect their data and systems from cyber threats and ensure compliance with industry regulations. This can give growing businesses peace of mind knowing that their IT infrastructure is being monitored and managed by professionals who are dedicated to keeping their systems secure and compliant.

In conclusion, outsourcing IT to an MSP can be a smart move for growing businesses looking to streamline their operations, reduce costs, and improve their overall IT infrastructure. By partnering with an MSP, businesses can benefit from a wide range of services and expertise, access to a team of skilled professionals, and improved security and compliance. If you’re a growing business looking to take your IT to the next level, consider outsourcing your IT needs to an MSP – it just might be the best decision you make for your business.

  • 2025 Shrine Bowl standouts that make sense for the Cowboys

FRISCO, Texas — The common misconception is that the future is what simply happens next and, while that’s true, the deeper truth is that the future is, actually, constantly and perpetually becoming the present — the latter converting to the former every instant — and it’s best the Dallas Cowboys keep this in mind as they work to do multiple things at the same time.

In other words, the next word you read in this sentence was in the future until you read it, making it your current present, and this will continue until you reach the end of this column.

See, it’s still happening. Fun, isn’t it?

And with the dust is quickly settling for the Cowboys’ coaching staff following the biggest domino having fallen, namely Brian Schottenheimer being named as head coach for 2025 and beyond — both the 2025 Reese’s Senior Bowl and East-West Shrine Bowl effectively kicking off draft season.

The latter got underway at the home of the Cowboys, no less, bringing a total of 142 draft prospects to AT&T STadium and though the 25-0 shutout victory by the East over the West wasn’t exactly a carnival ride, it did provide a clear-and-present opportunity at assessing future talent in the now.

Several stood out, and several others were interstellar.

With a shiny and well-deserved five-year contract under the arm of scouting guru Will McClay, the Cowboys hope to still be pioneers in the NFL draft going forward, and the hope is that they have barely begun, but their greatest accomplishments cannot be behind them, because their destiny lies above them.

So, which standouts from the Shrine Bowl might become their next step toward a postseason destiny?

Glad you asked, because the future is right now, and here are the ones that make the most sense at positions of need in Dallas to help launch the Schottenheimer era into orbit.

[Note: All height measurements are rounded to the nearest inch.]

    Quarterback

    • Brady Cook, Missouri (6’2 “, 209 lbs)
    • Cam Miller, North Dakota State (6’1″, 210 lbs)

To be frank, neither Cook nor Cam Miller really floored me, and I’ll spare you my review of Max Brosmer and Ethan Garbers, because it isn’t pretty. Not that things were stupendous for the starting quarterbacks, but there were at least some positive takeaways hiding within the mayhem of botched snaps and lost fumbles.

Cook showed an ability to make top-shelf throws when given time to do so, evidenced in the exceptional placement on an early ball down the right sideline to Colorado receiver Will Sheppard, put where only Sheppard had a chance for it with the defensive back draped all over him. His protection didn’t exactly help his cause on Thursday, however, but he didn’t let that force him to give the ball away in the air.

Miller, hailing from the same school as Trey Lance, showed more composure than did Cook when pressured, using his mobility and keeping his eyes downfield at all times, also using that mobility to deliver a successful two-point conversion; his two lost fumbles blackening an otherwise solid, though not outstanding, outing.

As it stands, either could be worth a look in undrafted free agency for a shot to compete in training camp for either an immediate backup role to Dak Prescott or for a practice squad seat to develop further.

    Running back

    • Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Arizona (5’11”, 206 lbs)

It would have been nice to get a look at Phil Mafa out of Clemson in this game, seeing as I had him on my pregame watch list, but he didn’t take a single rep. All that did, however, was allow for me to get an up close and personal look at Croskey-Merritt and, let me tell you, I’m writing home to mother about him and sending the telegram on the fastest steed I can employ.

Initially, JCM caught my eye late in the first quarter with a 27-yard gain that saw him explode through the run lane and then separating from several defenders. By the time he later executed a jump cut that saw him plant and violently disappear laterally, followed by his first of two touchdowns displaying patience to allow blocks to develop and a hesi move that froze linebackers before bursting to the pylon, I was sold.

Winning offensive MVP honors were of no consequence to my assessment, because I had already awarded it to him at halftime. I’m not saying he’s a Day 1 or Day 2 pick, but using a flyer on this type of potential at a position of dire need would make sense.

    Wide receivers

    • Will Sheppard, Colorado (6’2″, 198 lbs)
    • Efton Chism III, Eastern Washington (5’10”, 195 lbs)

Sheppard didn’t get a lot of burn, but I liked what I saw when he was on the field. His first offensive drive included a throw from Brady Cook that required an ability to not only high point the ball while fading toward the boundary with the defender hanging on him like grandmother’s tablecloth, but also a tremendous spatial awareness and body control to come down with the catch.

As for Chism, what can I say other than “my my my”, in my best Johnny Gill voice. Don’t let the height fool you, because he played as tough as anyone and, actually, tougher than several at his position on Thursday. His athleticism was also put on full display when he hurdled a defender atop the second quarter. Shifty, quick, tough, fast and also provides value as a return specialist — finishing the game with four catches on four targets for a team-high 48 yards while averaging 10.8 yards per catch is simply delectable.

    Offensive line

    • Gerad Christian-Lichtenhan, OT, Oregon State (6’8″, 328 lbs)
    • John Williams, OT, Cincinnati (6’3″, 324 lbs)
    • Jack Conley, iOL, Boston College (6’6″, 327 lbs)

I’ll keep this one short because, as much as I hate to say it, there wasn’t a lot to enjoy on either offensive line in this year’s Shrine Bowl; but that isn’t to say there wasn’t good film put out there by some on several occasions. GCL showed me a nice anchor that is difficult to move once he drops it and sets his lower body, and Williams has a high motor that had him finishing initial block assignments before continuing to the second level to seek out more work; and I also feel he could be kicked inside, if versatility is something you like (hint: the Cowboys love it).

Conley showed me a very good pin and pull technique later in the first quarter and his only truly bad play was when Tonka Hemingway dismissed him en route to sacking Cook in the first quarter. In all, these three showed me enough to warrant a continued watch as their pro days approach.

    Defensive tackle

    • Tonka Hemingway, South Carolina (6’3″, 288 lbs)
    • Payton Page, Clemson (6’1″, 210 lbs)

With a name like Tonka Hemingway, you’re likely destined to do something special with your football life, because what’s better than a defensive tackle named after a truck but who also has the same last name as a legendary writer — earnest (wink) in how he approached the Shrine Bowl and his competitors across the line. If not for Hemingway’s destructive ways, Cook might’ve had a better outing. He not only sacked the opposing quarterback but also had two pass deflections, his ability to “J.J. Watt” the ball in the passing lanes paying off well in Arlington, a wrecking ball with trees glued to it.

Page’s stat line won’t jump out at you, but he had a critical fumble recovery in the second quarter that made a difference. Also, his ability to penetrate the pocket and pressure Ethan Garbers into a bad throw that was intercepted by cornerback Tyron Herring further demonstrated his ability to impact a game, even if it’s not from sacks and takeaways.

    Defensive end/EDGE

    • Cam Horsley, Boston College (6’2″, 307 lbs)
    • Johnny Walker Jr., Missouri (6’3″, 246 lbs)

Not one, but two Boston College guys make my list as Horsley joins Conley in standing out at AT&T Stadium. There was violence in his play but also some finesse when needed, and though there’s still development to be had here, the potential is there for the right coach to mold. Horsley’s best play was when he beat Joshua Gray with a speed rush on the first defensive drive to flush Cam Miller out of the pocket and into what became a bad throw on third down that led to a punt.

And what could be more perfect to catch the attention of owner and general manager Jerry Jones than a tall glass of Johnny Walker? This one was left would-be blockers punch drunk on more than one occasion, displaying speed off the edge en route to two sacks, three quarterback hits and a forced fumble that gave his team the ball back immediately after his offense lost one themselves in a bang-bang sequence of plays in the second quarter.

Maybe Jones would be willing to turn this Johnny Walker … blue … on Day 3?

    Linebackers

    • Teddye Buchanan, Cal (6’2″, 236 lbs)
    • Francisco Mauigoa, Miami (FL) (6’1″, 231 lbs)
    • Jamon Dumas-Johnson, Kentucky (6’1″, 246 lbs)

Buchanan wasn’t kidding around, now was he? I will say that he needs to continue working on his eye discipline but there’s no denying his instincts. When he doesn’t overthink and simply trusts his abilities, he’s quite the missile. If you doubt this, check the tape at the 1:18 minute mark in the first quarter for an example, and the fact he finished with the most tackles on the West team (6 combined) is telling.

Not to be overshadowed, Dumas-Johnson led the East in tackles through the first three quarters, helping in run support and in trying to keep a lid on any would-be big plays. It worked, considering his defense completely shut out the West’s offense, and there were some points during JDJ’s play that my eyes got involuntarily large due to his reaction and closing speed; and he was joined in those efforts by Mauigoa, who finished with the same number of tackles as did JDJ (4) but also added a pass break up and a fumble recovery to his tape.

Maui’ basically looked at his Shrine Bowl coaches and said, “You’re welcome.”

    Cornerbacks

    • O’Donnell Fortune, South Carolina (6’1″, 188 lbs)
    • Tyron Herring, Delaware (6’1″, 202 lbs)
    • Shiloh Sanders, Colorado (6’0″, 195 lbs, via school)
    • Nohl Williams, Cal (6’1″, 200 lbs, via school)
    • Marques Sigle, Kansas State (5’11”, 196 lbs)

This was one hell of a competition, and I was here for all of it. A quiet start for Shiloh Sanders, the only Sanders that chose to participate in the game, gave way to a very active evening for the former Buffalo. Five tackles were good enough to tie him for second most on the West’s defense, adding a pass break up and also showing value on special teams. Williams nearly matched Sanders’ production in every way, helping for a much better second half from that unit.

On the opposite sideline is where the fireworks were housed, though, because from Fortune’s 65-yard pick-six in the second quarter (a terrible throw by Ethan Garbers, admittedly, missing a wide open target in the open field) helped propel Fortune to Defensive Player of the Game honors.

I personally would’ve given the nod to Johnny Walker, but I digress, and don’t let this tidbit detract from O’Donnell’s good fortune. Prior to the pick-six stealing the show, it was Herring grabbing an interception early in the second quarter and finishing with two pass break ups as well. He was fairly sticky in his coverage, definitely physical, and with soft hands that can compete with receivers’.

Last but certainly not least, Sigle stands to catch the Cowboys’ eye. For one, they’ve established a pipeline from Kansas State that previously led to the selection of Deuce Vaughn and Cooper Beebe and, for two, Sigle did enough to strengthen the interest. Not only did he lead the East’s outstanding shutout defense with six tackles, he also showed an ability to force turnovers — laying a hit on Prieskorn to force the fumble that was recovered by Mauigoa.

It was difficult to take my eyes off of Sigle but, then again, the same is true for most of the standouts that made my list on Thursday evening.

Bring on the NFL Combine and pro days.

Remember, the future is already here, so there’s literally no time to waste.

The 2025 Shrine Bowl showcased some impressive talent, and there are a few standouts that could make sense for the Dallas Cowboys. Here are a few players who caught the eye of scouts and could potentially be a good fit for America’s Team:

    1. QB Jacoby Smith – Smith showed great poise and accuracy during the Shrine Bowl, leading his team to victory. With the uncertainty surrounding Dak Prescott’s future in Dallas, Smith could be a solid backup option or even develop into a future starter for the Cowboys.

    2. CB Taylor Johnson – Johnson’s speed and ball-hawking skills were on full display in the Shrine Bowl, making him a potential target for the Cowboys’ secondary. With the need for depth at cornerback, Johnson could provide some much-needed support for the defense.

    3. WR Marcus Davis – Davis was a standout performer in the Shrine Bowl, showcasing his route-running ability and hands. With the Cowboys looking to add more weapons for their passing game, Davis could be a valuable addition to their receiving corps.

Overall, these Shrine Bowl standouts have the potential to make a significant impact for the Dallas Cowboys in the future. Keep an eye on these players as they continue their football journey.

  • 5 trades between the Warriors and Bulls that make sense for both sides

The Golden State Warriors have been getting tied to the Chicago Bulls in trade talks for months. With rumors continuing to fly, I decided to put together five potential trades that could make sense for both sides.

Here’s what I came up with:

    1. Zach LaVine for a package without Jonathan Kuminga or Andrew Wiggins

Warriors get: Zach LaVine, Talen Horton-Tucker, Julian Phillips
Bulls get: Dennis Schröder, Gary Payton II, Buddy Hield, Kyle Anderson, Kevon Looney, 2025 GS 1st (Unprotected)

Yes, the Warriors can take on LaVine’s salary without trading Wiggins or Kuminga and stay just below their hard cap.

It’s undeniable that LaVine is no longer viewed by the league as player who is less valuable than his salary. The question facing the Warriors and Bulls is how much has the pendulum swung? Chicago is less than six months removed from desperately trying to get LaVine’s contract off their books, and given his injury history, one unlucky break could have them right back there.

Jonathan Kuminga would undeniably be a bigger name return, but that seems off the table from Golden State’s perspective. It honestly might not be that big of a problem for Chicago either. While Kuminga is a far better scorer than Patrick Williams, there are some similarities in their career-arcs that could rightfully make the Bulls front office nervous about paying another tweener 4/3.

In this deal, the Bulls would not have to worry about getting an extension with Kuminga, or committing $25 million per year to Wiggins. Instead, they could immediately redirect as many of the players they receive to other teams for as many second-round picks as they can acquire. They should easily be able to net three second rounders, and possibly more.

It’s fair to argue that LaVine’s impact is worth more than one unprotected first and several seconds, but is there another team out there that could help the Bulls clear that much salary that quickly alongside a first-round pick that will probably fall in the 12-20 range?

Given how desperate the Bulls once were to trade LaVine, fully clearing his contract for a bevy of mid to low-value picks might be too hard to pass up. If not, it’s not out of the question that the Warriors could part with a protected 2027 first-rounder as well, perhaps recouping a second rounder or two from Chicago.

    2. Just Nikola Vučević

Warriors get: Nikola Vučević, 2025 SAC 2nd, 2028 CHI 2nd
Bulls get: Gary Payton II, Kyle Anderson, Lindy Waters III, 2025 GS 1st (Top-5 protected)

The emergence of Quinten Post may make adding a stretch big with defensive weaknesses like Vučević less appealing, which is probably why the Warriors have reportedly shifted their focus to LaVine, however, there has been enough smoke here to justify playing around with potential fits.

The hold up here is no secret. The Bulls want a first-round pick for Vučević. The Dubs have been unwilling to do tha. In this deal, the Bulls give Golden State some protections and part with a pair of second-round picks to get them across the finish line. I’d be surprised if the Warriors move in this direction for several reasons, but this seems like the way a deal gets done if the Warriors decide Vučević is their top priority at the deadline.

    3. A Zach LaVine trade built around Andrew Wiggins

    Warriors get: Zach LaVine
Bulls get: Andrew Wiggins, Kyle Anderson, Kevon Looney, 2025 GS 1st (Top-5 Protected), Right to first-round pick swap 2029 (Unprotected), 2025 MIA 2nd

The Warriors are making their salary cap management a lot harder by trying to acquire another player with a massive salary. Dealing Andrew Wiggins will weaken the Warriors wing depth significantly and put massive pressure on LaVine and his health. However, it also makes it far easier to make a deal work. LaVine is an undeniable upgrade (when healthy). If the Bulls aren’t open to other options, it’s probably still a deal worth pursuing.

If the Bulls are taking on Wiggins’ contract though, it’s harder to imagine Chicago accepting just one first-round pick. In this deal, the Warriors are able to hold onto their first-round picks in 2026-2028, leveraging the uncertainty that faces them in the likely post-Steph years by giving up unprotected opportunity to swap first-round picks in 2029 instead.

    4. A funky Patrick Williams deal

    Warriors get: Patrick Williams
Bulls get: Gary Payton II, Kyle Anderson, 2025 MIA 2nd

This out of left field idea made more sense prior to the Warriors recent wins. Williams signed a five-year, $90 million contract last offseason and has significantly regressed in Chicago to the point where they have started shopping the former-fourth overall pick. In a world where the Warriors are fully focused on the 2025-26 season, it might be worth using some of their expiring (or valuable mid-tier) deals to take a chance on Williams as a 3-and-D player to lessen their reliance on Wiggins.

    5. The Complete Makeover

Warriors get: Zach LaVine, Nikola Vučević, Coby White, Torrey Craig, Talen Horton-Tucker, Julian Phillips, 2025 SAC 2nd
Bulls get: Andrew Wiggins, Dennis Schröder, Gary Payton II, Buddy Hield, Kyle Anderson, Kevon Looney, Jonathan Kuminga, 2025 GS 1st (Unprotected), 2027 GS 1st (Top-5 protected)

What are the Bulls trying to do? If the answer is a complete tear down and tank, the Warriors could conceivably give them that opportunity. Wiggins, Kuminga, two first-round picks, several second rounders and roughly $50 million in 2025-26 salary commitments off their books would be a pretty massive reset for Chicago.

The Dubs wing depth would become incredibly thin following the trade, but Curry would have the most offensive firepower helping him out in years. While Curry, LaVine, Green, and Vučević would obviosuly be locked into the starting lineup, head coach Steve Kerr would have some experimenting to do to find the fifth starter.

Is there enough scoring to reinvigorate Podziemski in the starting lineup as a high-energy distributor? Would it be worth the defensive consequences of starting White in the backcourt alongside Curry? Perhaps veteran Torrey Craig is the kind of stable small forward that would balance the lineup best. Or maybe Moses Moody (*whispers* or maybe Kevin Knox)? Nevertheless, that would be Kerr’s biggest challenge in the second half.

While the immediate impact of such a major mid-season shakeup on the 2024-25 season is hard to predict, the Warriors would undeniably be in a far better position heading into the offseason. They would already have the following depth chart under contract:
    PG: Curry, White, Podziemski
    SG: LaVine, Moody
    SF: Philips
    PF: Green, Santos
    C: Vučević, Jackson-Davis, Post*

*Assuming Post is converted from a two-way contract.

There offseason strategy would be simple, beef up their wing depth to compliment their offensive firepower. They would also have their mid-level exception and a clear opportunity at playing time to pitch prospective free agents.

It’s easy to see why rumors have swirled around the Bulls and Warriors for months. They have several avenues to aligning on some trades that could have ripple effects around the league. With less than a week until the NBA trade deadline on February 6th, we will see whether any of these possibilities turn into a real deal.

    1. Warriors trade Andrew Wiggins and a future first-round pick to the Bulls for Lauri Markkanen and Thaddeus Young: The Warriors add shooting and frontcourt depth with Markkanen, while the Bulls get a versatile wing in Wiggins and a future asset.
    2. Warriors trade James Wiseman, Kelly Oubre Jr., and a future first-round pick to the Bulls for Zach LaVine: The Warriors upgrade their backcourt with an elite scorer in LaVine, while the Bulls get a promising young center in Wiseman and a solid wing in Oubre.
    3. Warriors trade Draymond Green and a future second-round pick to the Bulls for Patrick Williams and Tomas Satoransky: The Warriors add a versatile young forward in Williams and a solid backup point guard in Satoransky, while the Bulls get a veteran leader in Green to mentor their young core.
    4. Warriors trade Jordan Poole and Kevon Looney to the Bulls for Coby White: The Warriors add a young scoring guard in White to bolster their backcourt depth, while the Bulls get a promising young wing in Poole and a solid big man in Looney.
    5. Warriors trade Eric Paschall and a future second-round pick to the Bulls for Garrett Temple: The Warriors add a veteran wing in Temple to provide leadership and shooting off the bench, while the Bulls get a young forward in Paschall who can contribute right away.

  • Lakers Trade Rumors: Sense is Lakers could stand pat at deadline

The optimism that came with the Lakers swinging a late-December trade has been stamped out in recent weeks. After an initial run of wins that Dorian Finney-Smith joined in the midst of, the Lakers have lost four of the last six games.

When the Lakers made their early move, most assumed it would be the first of multiple moves. After over a year of no deals, the Lakers were finally showing life at the deadline and surely that wouldn’t be the only time they do so…right?

    Well!

With the trade deadline just over two weeks away, the latest report from Jovan Buha of The Athletic suggests that the Lakers could go back to sitting on their hands this deadline.

The sense around the league, when talking to rival scouts and front-office personnel, is that standing pat or making a half-measure trade (likely one or two second-round picks) is more likely than the Lakers going all-in and trading both of their future first-round picks that can be moved. That’s dependent, of course, on the available players, asking prices and the team’s performance through the deadline.

If this feels like a redux of past seasons, just know you’re not alone in that sentiment. This is something that could have been written any time in the last 18 months and it wouldn’t have felt out of place.

Now, if you’re looking for some solace, this is:

    1. One report from one writer
    2. A sentiment that hasn’t been shared anywhere else
    3. Reporting on what others around the NBA think, not what the Lakers are thinking.

None of this is to discredit Buha’s work in any way. He’s as connected as it comes to reporting on the Lakers. Even he would probably agree with at least most of the caveats above.

At the same time this is being reported, Dan Woike of the LA Times is also reporting that the Lakers are making calls, specifically about centers. Multiple things can be true here.

And realistically, there probably isn’t many players the Lakers could trade both firsts for on the market. That type of player isn’t even available.

There won’t be much time to wait before we find out an answer on whether the Lakers are going to stand pat. But it’s a bit of déjà vu all over again in all the bad ways reading a report like that.

With the NBA trade deadline rapidly approaching, rumors have been swirling about potential moves the Los Angeles Lakers could make. However, recent reports suggest that the Lakers may ultimately decide to stand pat and not make any major trades.

Despite some speculation that the Lakers could look to shake up their roster in order to improve their chances of making a deep playoff run, sources close to the team indicate that they are content with their current group of players. With LeBron James and Anthony Davis leading the way, the Lakers feel confident in their ability to compete with the top teams in the league.

While there may still be some minor moves made before the deadline, such as adding depth to their bench or making a small trade to address a specific need, it appears that the Lakers are unlikely to make any blockbuster deals. This decision could be influenced by the team’s chemistry and success so far this season, as well as the challenges of integrating new players into their system mid-season.

Of course, things can change quickly in the NBA, and the Lakers could still surprise fans with a last-minute trade. But for now, it seems that the sense within the organization is to stay the course and trust in the roster they have built. Only time will tell if this proves to be the right decision as the trade deadline approaches.

  • Lakers Rumors: Rivals’ Sense Is ‘Half-Measure Trade’ More Likely Than ‘Going All-In’ | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors

Having already made one in-season trade, the Los Angeles Lakers could be quiet as far as making anymore deals prior to the Feb. 6 deadline.

Per The Athletic’s Jovan Buha, the “sense” from rival scouts and front-office executives around the NBA is the Lakers are more likely to either stand pat or make a “half-measure” trade rather than try for an “all-in” move.

Buha noted this approach is dependent on which players will be available, the asking price for those players and how the Lakers perform over the next two weeks before the deadline.

If the Lakers make a move, Buha cited a big man or another ball-handler as the areas they would prioritize.

There are two problems for any team that might be trying to go all-in before the trade deadline. The first one is apron restrictions that have 17 of the NBA’s 30 teams hard-capped at either the first or second apron.

    Bobby Marks @BobbyMarks42

The list of teams that are hard capped:

$178.1M- 1st Apron

- Atlanta (sign-and-trade)
- Brooklyn (sign-and-trade)
- Charlotte (sent out cash)
- Chicago (non- tax ML)
- Dallas (sign/trade |Non-tax ML)
- Golden St. (sign/trade | Non-tax ML)
- Houston (biannual/prior TE)
- LA…

Another problem, even if the Lakers were to decide they wanted to push their chips in for this season, is there aren’t many difference-making players available.

Jimmy Butler is the biggest name who seems likely to be dealt, but there’s been nothing connecting him to the Lakers at this point.

Cameron Johnson’s three-point shooting and perimeter defense would be a great fit for any team, but the market for him figures to be very competitive because every contender is looking for a wing right now.

Buha noted there is a “lack of available two-way wings in Los Angeles’ price and asset range,” suggesting there is a high price tag on Johnson. Brian Lewis of the New York Post noted the Brooklyn Nets want either two first-round draft picks or the equivalent value thereof in exchange for the 28-year-old.

The Lakers and Nets previously struck a deal on Dec. 29 for Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton, with Los Angeles sending D’Angelo Russell, Maxwell Smith and three future second-round picks to Brooklyn.

Anthony Davis and LeBron James did get the Lakers to the Western Conference Finals two years ago after earning the No. 7 seed in the playoffs by beating the Minnesota Timberwolves in the play-in tournament.

That team was built around what would be considered more marginal upgrades prior to the trade deadline, including acquiring Rui Hachimura, Mo Bamba, Malik Beasley and Jarred Vanderbilt.

Los Angeles currently sits in sixth place in the Western Conference with a 22-18 record. The team has lost four of its last six games, including a 116-102 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday.

The Los Angeles Lakers are no strangers to trade rumors, especially when it comes to making big moves to improve their roster. However, according to recent reports, it seems that the Lakers’ rivals believe that a “half-measure trade” is more likely than the team going all-in on a blockbuster deal.

While the Lakers have been linked to several star players in trade rumors, including Bradley Beal and Damian Lillard, it appears that their rivals believe that the team is more likely to make a smaller move to bolster their roster rather than making a big splash.

This news comes as a bit of a surprise to Lakers fans who have been hoping for a major trade to help the team compete for another championship. However, it seems that the team’s rivals believe that the Lakers are more likely to make a more modest move to address their needs.

As the NBA trade deadline approaches, it will be interesting to see if the Lakers do indeed make a “half-measure trade” or if they decide to go all-in on a blockbuster deal. In the meantime, fans will have to wait and see what moves the team makes as they continue their quest for another championship.

  • Trump says ICE can arrest people at churches and schools, directs agency to use ‘common sense’

    Washington
    CNN
     —

Federal immigration authorities will be permitted to arrest people and carry out enforcement actions in and near places such as churches and schools, marking a departure from long-standing policy to avoid so-called sensitive areas.

Acting Homeland Security Secretary Benjamine Huffman announced the end of two directives in a statement, giving agents more authority over whether they carry out enforcement and eliminating a legal pathway for migrants seeking to come to the United States.

“Criminals will no longer be able to hide in America’s schools and churches to avoid arrest. The Trump Administration will not tie the hands of our brave law enforcement, and instead trusts them to use common sense,” the statement reads.

It’s a key example of how enforcement is going to be different under the new Trump administration from the Biden administration.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement set a policy in 2011 preventing agents from making arrests in sensitive locations. The Biden administration put out similar guidance. Immigrant advocates have shared concerns over stripping that policy, arguing that doing so would stoke fear in immigrant communities and keep children from going to school or people from seeking care at hospitals.

The second directive includes the phaseout of parole programs that allowed certain migrants to temporarily live and work in the United States. Republicans have repeatedly said the Biden administration abused the parole program by extending it to multiple nationalities. The statement doesn’t clarify which programs will be phased out, but says the program will be returned to a “case-by-case basis.”

“The Biden-Harris Administration abused the humanitarian parole program to indiscriminately allow 1.5 million migrants to enter our country. This was all stopped on day one of the Trump Administration. This action will return the humanitarian parole program to its original purpose of looking at migrants on a case-by-case basis,” the statement says.

In a recent statement, President Trump declared that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has the authority to arrest individuals at churches and schools. He directed the agency to use “common sense” when carrying out these arrests.

This announcement has sparked controversy and raised concerns among immigrant communities and advocates. Many argue that places of worship and educational institutions should be considered safe spaces where individuals, regardless of their immigration status, should not fear being targeted for enforcement actions.

Critics of the Trump administration’s immigration policies argue that this directive could have a chilling effect on individuals seeking refuge and assistance at churches and schools. They worry that this could deter vulnerable populations, such as undocumented immigrants, from seeking help and accessing essential services.

On the other hand, supporters of the President’s stance on immigration enforcement argue that ICE should have the ability to apprehend individuals who are in the country illegally, regardless of where they may be located. They believe that enforcing immigration laws is crucial to maintaining national security and protecting American citizens.

As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how ICE will interpret and implement this directive. The implications of allowing arrests at churches and schools are significant and have far-reaching consequences for immigrant communities across the country.
