‘Wolf Man’ and ‘September 5’ now available at home; Florence Pugh, Andrew Garfield romance ‘We Live in Time’ hits Max
After Universal tried and failed to usher in a new era of their classic monster movies, 2020’s The Invisible Man helped resurrect the concept with Leigh Whannell’s clever and thoroughly modern take on the story.
Not only was that movie a hit with both audiences and critics, but it also seemed to provide a much-needed template for Universal to update its beloved characters to reflect the times. It took five years, but the studio has finally made a proper follow-up in Wolf Man, and they brought back Whannell to try his hand again.
The response to Wolf Man was markedly different than that of The Invisible Man, regarding both box office and critical reception. But is it worth your time? It debuted on digital this week, 17 days after its theatrical release, so you can find out for yourself.
Wolf Man isn’t the only movie newly available on streaming this week — the critically acclaimed, ripped-from-the-headlines period journalism thriller September 5 is out now, and A24’s hit romance We Live in Time, starring Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield, hits Max.
The Pharrell Williams Lego biopic Piece by Piece is out on Peacock, which could be appealing to kids and parents alike. For after the kids go to bed, Kill, a hyper-violent action-thriller from India that earned rave reviews, is available on Hulu.
Here’s what to know about the theatrical movies newly available to stream as of this week and where you can find them.
Click on the links below to jump straight to a specific movie:
Wolf Man
Wolf Man sets up a loaded metaphor in its terrific, tense opening sequence: A boy and his overbearing survivalist father hunting in the woods encounter some sort of animalistic creature. As the movie progresses, it becomes clear there’s not enough meat on the bone for the analogy they’re going for regarding parenthood, trauma, abuse and how we’re doomed to become our parents, no matter how hard we try to stray from the path.
It’s heavy stuff for a movie that could stand to have some fun, but there are still elements worthy of praise, including the practical makeup effects on the wolf transformation and the impactful, but all-too-brief moments of body horror. Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner are two great performers, but it’s hard to get a read on their characters.
Wolf Man is ambitious enough to recommend to those who like their genre fare more offbeat, but it doesn’t come together in the same satisfying way that Whannell’s previous effort did.
How to watch: Wolf Man is now available to rent or purchase on Prime Video and other video on demand platforms.
We Live in Time
Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh star in A24’s romance We Live in Time, which you may want to watch with a box of tissues nearby. It’s all about the inventive structure here, as it’s a story you’ve otherwise likely seen before. The movie is told nonlinearly, turning it into a sort of puzzle you solve as it goes.
It’s a neat trick to keep you engaged in what could be overly familiar, weepy material, and both Pugh and Garfield are great in it as a couple that we see go through many ups and downs over a decade. It’s refreshing that the movie isn’t afraid to present the hardships as equally as it depicts the good times.
How to watch: We Live in Time is now streaming on Max.
September 5
September 5 has to be one of the most overlooked and underseen movies of 2024. It earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture — Drama, and was nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars, but still, it feels like few people have seen or heard of this movie.
Maybe some of that has to do with the fact that it is about events that were already famously depicted in the capital-G Great Munich, which Steven Spielberg directed. Still, that shouldn’t affect your interest in September 5, which tells a separate story.
It’s a journalism process movie that takes place during the 1972 Munich Olympics, when an American sports broadcasting crew found itself thrust into covering the hostage crisis involving Israeli athletes. It may be a journalism movie, and a great one at that, but it’s also a gripping thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat, as the sports journalists and the news junkies jockey to cover it effectively.
It’s about big ethical questions and moral quandaries that are as relevant today as they were in 1972, and you get the sense this moment in time was important in establishing broadcast journalism as we know it. A terrific nuts-and-bolts “how tough decisions get made in real time” movie!
How to watch: September 5 is now available to rent or purchase on Prime Video and other video on demand platforms.
Piece by Piece
Piece by Piece isn’t the first animated movie to use the Lego aesthetic, but it’s certainly the first biopic about a real person to be depicted in Lego.
It’s not as strange as it sounds, and the movie actually does a good job of setting up why exactly you’re watching a movie about legendary music producer and musician Pharrell Williams in Lego form. Pharrell has synesthesia, which allows him to essentially see music, which alone is a clever justification for the colorful world in the movie.
There’s an infectious and inspiring creative energy that’s hard to ignore, and if the story of Williams’s rise from rags to riches wasn’t compelling enough, the soundtrack of wall-to-wall bangers that he either produced or sang on himself is undeniable.
How to watch: Piece by Piece is now streaming on Peacock.
Kill
If you love a good revenge movie and you don’t mind a lot of blood and nonstop violence, the aptly titled Kill is for you. The plot is high-concept, yet simple: A guy is out for revenge, killing those who have wronged him, except it’s set entirely on a moving train.
Kill doesn’t pull a bait-and-switch exactly, but the degree to which the tenor of the violence changes after a certain death at the midpoint of the movie is unexpected and harrowing. A movie that revels in violent deaths suddenly starts showing you that every death means the world to someone — what was once just bombastic entertainment has been rendered upsetting and hard to shake.
Kill does a great job of building emotional stakes so the audience cares about what’s going on, and thankfully, the action is also shot well and choreographed so there’s rarely a dull moment.
How to watch: Kill is now streaming on Hulu.

Omar Vega/Getty Images
Canelo Álvarez and Terence Crawford have reached a tentative agreement for a September fight, according to The Ring’s Keith Idec.
The two are expected to face off this fall in Las Vegas, with the venue and specific date still up in the air.
Boxing fans have long hoped this matchup would come to fruition. Some of the optimism steadily faded as Canelo selected a series of opponents who could charitably described as lackluster. Since winning a unanimous decision over Gennady Golovkin in September 2022, he has beaten John Ryder, Jermell Charlo, Jaime Munguía and Edgar Berlanga.
But ESPN’s Mike Coppinger first reported on Jan. 18 that negotiations between Álvarez and Crawford’s camps were “in the red zone,” a reference to the 20 yards before the end zone in football. The event is slated for the weekend of Mexican Independence Day to carry on Canelo’s annual tradition of stepping into the ring around the holiday.
Mike Coppinger @MikeCoppinger
No signed contracts yet, but Canelo Alvarez, boxing’s top star, and Terence Crawford are primed to meet on Mexican Independence Day Weekend in September if all is finalized. And as Crawford said all along, it would take place at 168 pounds with no rehydration clause. pic.twitter.com/Gw0DoA21uH
Per Idec, Álvarez is likely to fight May 3 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas to keep himself sharp, and William Scull is one potential candidate for that slot. Scull is unbeaten with nine knockouts in 23 professional fights, most recently earning a unanimous decision over Vladimir Shishkin in October.
It’s unclear whether Crawford would also schedule a tune-up ahead of a megafight with Canelo, though that seems a strong possibility.
The 37-year-old fought just once in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024, so a yearlong layoff between his August win over Israil Madrimov and a date with Álvarez wouldn’t be uncommon. For a headliner of this magnitude, he may prefer to avoid having any ring rust.

This clash between two of the sport’s biggest stars is sure to be an epic showdown that fans won’t want to miss.Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting matchup, including news, scores, highlights, stats, and rumors leading up to the fight. The Ring has learned that an agreement is in place for Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to defend his super middleweight titles against Terence Crawford in an intriguing battle between generational greats.
Alvarez, 34, and Crawford, 37, are expected to meet in the main event of a Riyadh Season show – on a September date to be determined, and a venue to be chosen in Las Vegas.
The Alvarez-Crawford megafight will pit the No. 3 fighter on The Ring’s pound-for-pound list, Crawford, against the seventh-rated Alvarez, boxing’s most marketable star in the United States.
Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs), of Omaha, Nebraska, and Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs), of Guadalajara, Mexico, are four-division champions and elite-level talents, but Crawford will move up two weight classes – from the junior middleweight limit of 154 pounds to the super middleweight maximum of 168 – for what figures to be the most difficult fight of his 17-year professional career.
Alvarez and Crawford both stand at approximately 5-foot-8, but Alvarez figures to open as a decided betting favorite because he is the more powerful fighter and has competed as high as the light heavyweight limit of 175 pounds.
Crawford made his junior middleweight debut August 3, when career-long 154-pound contender Israil Madrimov (10-1-1, 7 KOs) gave Crawford some trouble in a 12-round bout the former undisputed welterweight champ won by unanimous decision at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles.
The business savvy Alvarez initially ignored Crawford’s overtures. As momentum developed for their fight among hardcore and casual boxing fans, Alvarez eventually came around.
The Mexican superstar and Turki Alalshikh – owner of The Ring and head of Riyadh Season – met in London last month to discuss the Crawford bout because Alvarez attended the inaugural Ring awards gala at Old Royal Naval College.
Crawford has long been committed to moving up two weight classes to square off against Alvarez in what has all the makings of a very successful pay-per-view event.
Alvarez – who holds the Ring, IBO, WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight titles – is first expected to fight May 3 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. His opponent for what will amount to a stay-busy fight prior to facing Crawford has not been determined.
IBF super middleweight champ William Scull (23-0, 9 KOs) has long been considered as a possible option for Canelo’s return in May.
Scull won the IBF belt stripped from Alvarez last July on October 19. The Cuban-born, Germany-based Scull defeated Russia’s Vladimir Shishkin (16-1, 10 KOs) by unanimous decision that night at Stadthalle in Falkensee, a suburb of Berlin.
It isn’t clear if Crawford will box before a fight with Alvarez in September. If Crawford waits, he won’t have fought for 13 months by the time he steps into the ring to box Alvarez.
Crawford has history on his side, because unlike most championship-caliber boxers, he has performed at an elite level even when ending long periods of inactivity.
Keith Idec is a staff writer and columnist for The Ring. He can be reached on X @idecboxing.
After months of negotiations and speculation, boxing fans can finally rejoice as an agreement has been reached for a megafight between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford. The highly anticipated bout is set to take place in Las Vegas in September, with both fighters eager to prove their dominance in the ring.Canelo Alvarez, the reigning WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight champion, is coming off a dominant victory over Billy Joe Saunders in May. Widely regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, Alvarez will be looking to add another impressive win to his already stellar resume.
On the other hand, Terence Crawford, the undefeated WBO welterweight champion, is considered one of the most skilled and versatile fighters in the sport. With an impressive record of 37 wins and 0 losses, Crawford will be looking to make a statement against Alvarez and solidify his status as one of the top fighters in the world.
The matchup between Alvarez and Crawford promises to be an electrifying clash of styles, with both fighters known for their speed, power, and technical prowess. Fans can expect a thrilling back-and-forth battle that could go down as one of the greatest fights in recent memory.
Stay tuned for more details on this highly anticipated showdown between two of boxing’s biggest stars. Get ready for an unforgettable night of action in Las Vegas as Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford square off in what promises to be a historic megafight.

Tim Fehlbaum’s September 5 is an emotionally throttling cinematic experience. At one moment, your pulse is pounding and you are thrilled watching a team of journalists rising to the task in covering a serious international incident amid a major event. At the next, your heart is in your throat as mistakes are made, shots are called incorrectly, and tragedy unfurls. It features powerful thrills alongside serious commentary about journalistic practice – and it manages to do so without expanding the story’s scope much beyond of a single location.
September 5
Release Date: December 13, 2024 (Limited), January 17, 2025 (Wide)
Directed By: Tim Fehlbaum
Written By: Moritz Binder, Tim Fehlbaum and Alex David
Starring: Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro, Ben Chaplin, Benjamin Walker and Leonie Benesch
Rating: R for language
Runtime: 95 minutesBut that’s not all. Tremendous commitment to details in the film’s period setting not only embed you alongside the characters in a specific time (namely the early 1970s), but successfully contribute to the stakes. And along with a stellar cast full of demonstrative drive that gives the movie an extra charismatic kick, September 5 coalesces as one of the most all-around impressive works to arrive in theaters in 2024.
The only truly bad thing about the movie is its inappropriately boring title, which refers to the date in 1972 when a group of terrorists executed a hostage plot at the Summer Olympic Games in Munich, West Germany. The only American media team on the ground to cover the event via satellite is the crew from ABC Sports, but given their primary professional focus, they are inexperienced in covering a news event of such magnitude.
Calling the shots in the control room, Geoffrey Mason (John Magaro) thinks fast about how best to shift coverage from the Olympics to the crisis involving members of a Palestinian militant organization threatening the lives of Israeli Olympic team members. With coordinating help from head of operations Marvin Bader (Ben Chaplin), network communication handled by producer Roone Arledge (Peter Sarsgaard), radio translations provided by local Marianne Gebhardt (Leonie Benesch), on-the-scene reporting from Peter Jennings (Benjamin Walker), and more, Mason experiences unprecedented successes in the world of televised news, but he also discovers the extreme consequences that come with live updates from such a chaotic event.
It’s a thrill to watch September 5’s ensemble leap into action.
Mason and his colleagues are blindsided by the terrorist plot, but there is a special thrill that comes when a movie features protagonists facing a crisis and responding to it with competency rather than panic, and September 5 rides on that energy for much of its runtime. The members of the broadcast team go to work on the fateful day expecting to be doing normal coverage of various sporting events, and movie-goers are inspired watching them perform an extreme pivot so that they can keep their audience up to date with all of the latest developments.
The film elicits wry smiles as a member of the crew is disguised as an Olympian so that he can surreptitiously transport equipment past barricades and massive cameras are rolled outside to get angles on the action. The specific setting adds its own special flavor, as while broadcasting footage around the world in the 21st century is no issue, the movie sees characters negotiating for satellite usage; the work from Marianne Gebhardt listening in on local police broadcasts and giving the Americans an inside scoop on what’s happening has a similar effect. Each step of the way, the bits of ingenuity have you invested and rooting for the team to provide the best coverage possible.
With shocking developments in the third act, September 5 becomes something different and unforgettable in the third act.
As fun as it is to see the folks at ABC Sports rise to the occasion and find clever ways to report on a crisis, however, what’s not lost in September 5 are the life-and-death stakes in the crisis that is being reported on – and at its core, that’s what makes the film stand out as a great story about journalism. When the line between providing reporting and providing entertainment is blurred, things can get exceptionally scary (and it renders Tim Fehlbaum’s feature a powerful commentary on modernity despite it being set over a half-century ago). There is a distinct chill in scenes where characters understand that oversteps have been made, including the broadcast tipping the terrorists off about a police maneuver or the film’s final act where hearsay ends up ruling the day.
September 5 utilizes an intimate scale to powerful effect.
The world is literally watching as events unfold on September 5, 1972, but the storytelling opts to keep things exceptionally intimate, and it’s a tremendous choice by the filmmakers. While the film in many instances breaks the rule of telling instead of showing, the larger impact is that we are fully locked into the perspectives of the character, and every update that gets delivered offers an opportunity for empathetic response – be it excitement, relief, or horror.
Having not known about the true events that inspired the film going into my screen, I found myself completely shell-shocked walking out of the theater, but given the remarkable presentation of the story, the terrific performances and its commentary on journalism practice, I don’t imagine it will have any less emotional impact on anyone already aware of the way things play out (or anyone seeing the movie for a second time, for that matter). All around, September 5 is an exceptionally well-crafted thriller and one of the best movies of 2024.
“September 5 Review: A Powerful Journalism Thriller And One Of The Best Movies Of The Year”I recently had the opportunity to watch the highly anticipated film, September 5, and I must say, it exceeded all my expectations. This gripping journalism thriller had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish, and left me in awe of the incredible storytelling and performances.
The film follows the journey of a fearless journalist who uncovers a major political scandal that threatens to shake the foundations of power. As she delves deeper into the story, she faces numerous obstacles and dangers, but her determination and courage never waver.
The performances in September 5 are truly outstanding, with each actor bringing their character to life in a way that is both captivating and heart-wrenching. The suspense and tension build throughout the film, keeping the audience hooked until the very end.
Not only is September 5 a thrilling and intense watch, but it also delves deep into important themes such as the power of the press, corruption, and the pursuit of truth. It serves as a powerful reminder of the vital role journalism plays in holding those in power accountable.
Overall, I can confidently say that September 5 is one of the best movies of the year. It is a must-watch for anyone who appreciates a well-crafted story, compelling performances, and thought-provoking themes. Don’t miss out on this incredible film – it is sure to leave a lasting impact on all who watch it.

How ‘September 5’ director Tim Fehlbaum re-created ABC’s Munich studio
With his latest film, Tim Fehlbaum wanted to find a way to add to our understanding of a horrific moment in history that he first learned of as a teenager watching the Oscar-winning 1999 documentary “One Day in September.”
The Swiss filmmaker and his co-screenwriter, Moritz Binder, found the story that would become “September 5” in ABC. It was the only network then with a live camera, and its sports team was thrown into becoming the globe’s real-time eyes and ears, navigating a new technology-driven and morally tricky journalism during an early-morning terrorist attack on Israeli athletes at the Munich Summer Olympics in 1972. “They were the most important channel that day,” says the 42-year-old Fehlbaum. “I was intrigued immediately by the media aspect, to tell it entirely through the control room’s perspective.”
Meeting with eyewitness Geoffrey Mason, now a veteran sports TV executive but then a producing newbie (played in the film by John Magaro), sparked Fehlbaum’s storytelling approach: Mason described a situation that sounded to the writer-director like an ethics thriller as much as a slice of history. “I asked him if they’d reflected on the consequences of their broadcast, and he said to us simply, ‘There was no time for that. We were too busy covering what was happening in real life,’’’ recalls Fehlbaum. “We realized that’s how the movie had to feel, with these questions constantly asked against a ticking clock.”
Mason’s memories also affected how Fehlbaum, who’d gone to film school in Munich, wanted to shoot the ABC control room that production designer Julian Wagner built at the city’s Bavaria Studios. “Mason told us they constantly felt trapped in that little studio,” says Fehlbaum, “so we chose to have no moving walls. We wanted everything to be close to the camera, to feel really claustrophobic. I like movies that draw their strength from a limitation of space. We wanted to shoot it as if we were a reporter team in that room that day, documentary-style. We wanted long takes, really tight, and to be able to pan anywhere.” Even the detail Mason offered up that the air conditioning wasn’t working that grim day became a point of verisimilitude for Fehlbaum, so he turned it off on the Bavaria stage. “I wanted the actors to really sweat.”
Fehlbaum also wanted to secure access to ABC’s original footage to avoid green-screen placeholders and allow his cast — including Peter Sarsgaard as Roone Arledge — to see and manipulate a bank of working monitors showing actual film and tape. The producers, benefiting from their relationship with Mason, locked up clearances just in time for the 32-day shoot.
The filmmakers didn’t want to have to cast anyone as Jim McKay, whose much-admired anchoring that day earned him a place in broadcast history and, from their perspective, was worthy of being shown in original form. “His performance is essential, a very special blend of being professional and sometimes letting emotions overcome him,” says Fehlbaum. “He was unique.”
Although ABC’s studio could be rebuilt from original plans, the devices — walkie-talkies, phones, tape machines, all state-of-the-art technology then — couldn’t be replicated if they were to be used accurately onscreen. Collectors helped save the day for the filmmakers. “You would be surprised how many passionate collectors there are,” Fehlbaum says. “One guy was obsessed with Munich ’72. We went to his apartment, and he had one of those huge cameras.”
Fehlbaum takes pride that viewers have praised the film for giving them a palpable sense of how “old-school television” worked, saying “United 93,” a favorite of his, similarly took him inside a plane’s inner workings as a specific frame for a tragic story. But he also knows that last year’s Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel, which happened as “September 5” was in postproduction, will shade how audiences absorb his film. “Of course, our movie touches that subject, a conflict that has never ended and is relevant today,” he says. “But I’m confident it will be seen as telling a story on how to report something like that.”
Dramatizing the mix of expertise and improvisation that went into covering an unfolding nightmare has affected the filmmaker’s view of journalism. “I had a lot of respect before for it but even more now, how complex it is,” says Fehlbaum. “These were sports reporters, so they had an innocent view on questions like, ‘Can we show violence on TV?’
“A lot of the questions they raise, they didn’t know how to answer, and I wouldn’t know how to answer,” he continues. “So we wanted to tell it from that perspective.”
