  • Living to Serve, Living as Myself: A Transgender Service Member’s Perspective


    I grew up in a religious and conservative house. I was homeschooled all but 2 years of my K-12 education. I considered myself a conservative until 2016. I’m still religious today.

    I come from a family of service. My cousin is Ret. Admiral James O. Ellis Jr., former commander of United States Strategic Command who is now a fellow at the Hoover Institution. My great uncle served in the Army during WW2 in the Battle of the Bulge as a forward artillery observer. My grandfather served in the Navy during WW2 hunting submarines. My older brother served in the Army as an M1 Abrams tank operator in Iraq in 2003. Service is in my blood.

    I joined the Virginia Army National Guard in 2009 as a 15G helicopter mechanic. I deployed to Iraq for Operation New Dawn in 2011 and earned the Air Medal for serving as a helicopter door gunner. I served in reserve operations in Guatemala in 2014 for Operation Beyond the Horizon, deployed to Kuwait in 2016 for Operation Inherent Resolve, and completed my BA in International Relations while deployed to Kuwait.

    I’ve had symptoms of what I now know to be “Gender Dysphoria” since I was 5 years old.  I learned early to hide these symptoms from my family because I thought they meant I was a bad person. This led to healthy and not-so-healthy coping mechanisms. I thought that if I could just be more religious, more successful, more manly… that I would cure my condition.

    I got married, bought a house, helped raise a stepdaughter, played drums in the church band, and adopted a dog. All the things I believed a good man should do. And I really wanted to do those things, but I also secretly hoped it would fix me. It didn’t work.

    In 2020, as a Staff Sergeant, I applied and was accepted into the Army’s Warrant Officer Flight Training program. I completed Warrant Officer Candidate School, SERE School (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape), and the UH60 Black Hawk helicopter course. During the Pandemic and flight training, I realized that I had repressed my gender dysphoria symptoms and was finally at a point in my life and career where I could face them. I sought therapy and learned what options were available. I returned home from flight school and flew with my unit for a year before taking next steps. After much counseling and discussion with my spouse, we agreed that for my health I needed to take steps towards transition.

    In 2023 I sent an email to my command giving them notice that I intended to start transition under the current in-service transition policy. My commander called me immediately after receiving the email and offered his support. I was met with overwhelming support from my entire command team and it would be kept confidential until I was ready to officially change genders. During this time, I started hormone treatment and started slowly presenting female in private or on vacations. I was medically stable and deployable 2 months later. Not every transgender person needs or wants gender reassignment surgery.

    In 2024 I came out to my unit and started presenting publicly as a woman. Once again, I was met with overwhelming support from my unit at large. For obvious reasons, I was nervous I’d be unwelcome or make other females feel uncomfortable with my presence in the barracks, restrooms, etc. Many female soldiers in my unit offered their support. Some even went out of their way to make me feel comfortable in their space.

    I’ve paid out of pocket for all my trans-related care. The military hasn’t covered any of it.  I recently underwent facial feminization surgery and was non-deployable for 6 weeks. This was considered an elective surgery and not deemed medically necessary for transition. Similar to anyone who gets a nose job or face lift.

    Since I’m part time military, I’ve also had to balance military obligations while working full time in the private sector. When I’m called up for service or training, I make less money than I do in the private sector. I say this to stress that this is coming from a servant heart and not motivated by finances or promises of medical care.

    I’ve served in the same unit for 15 years. I want to serve at least 15 more. I love my state and I love my country.

    Living to Serve, Living as Myself: A Transgender Service Member’s Perspective

    As a transgender individual serving in the military, my journey has been one of self-discovery, acceptance, and resilience. Being able to serve my country while also living authentically as my true self has been a transformative experience, one that has allowed me to fully embrace my identity and purpose.

    For many years, I struggled with my gender identity, feeling like I had to hide who I truly was in order to fit in and conform to societal norms. However, the military has provided me with a supportive and inclusive environment where I can be myself without fear of judgment or discrimination.

    Being able to serve alongside my fellow service members, who have shown me nothing but acceptance and respect, has been incredibly empowering. I have been able to fully embrace my identity and live authentically, knowing that I am valued for who I am as a person and not judged based on my gender identity.

    I believe that my experiences as a transgender service member have only strengthened my commitment to serving my country. I am proud to be able to contribute to the defense of our nation while also advocating for greater inclusivity and acceptance within the military.

    I hope that by sharing my story, I can inspire others to live authentically and unapologetically, regardless of their gender identity. We all deserve to be seen, heard, and respected for who we are, and I am grateful to have found that acceptance within the military.

    I am living to serve, and I am living as myself – a proud transgender service member.

    Quali sono le motivazioni che porterà la squadra nella sfida di domani? Ha visionato qualche giovane della Primavera per domani?
    “Abbiamo portato i ragazzi giovani che stanno facendo meglio, anche se domani siamo numericamente contati dobbiamo fare una partita vera, è quello che vogliamo con la squadra. La nostra concentrazione massima è rivolta alla gara di domani”.

    Quanto è cresciuto lei durante questa Europa League?
    “Io cresco ogni gara, chi fa questo mestiere ed è ambizioso deve porsi come obiettivo andare sempre oltre i limiti. Non sono contento per quanto successo domenica, accetto le critiche e me le devo assumere. Per alcune scelte devo dire che le rifarei perché hanno una natura che ci ha portato anche in Europa a far bene. È stata una gara particolare dove l’avversario ha raccolto tutto ciò che ha fatto, che è stato poco, mentre noi non siamo riusciti anche se la produzione offensiva è stata buona. Devi sempre avere qualcosa su cui ancorarti forte, l’identità della squadra e la produzione offensiva fatta anche nelle difficoltà è stata importante. Siamo i primi a metterci in discussione e faremo in modo di ridurre quei pochi errori che paghiamo a caro prezzo”.

    Non aveva neanche una panchina europea ed è primo quasi matematicamente, questo cosa significa?
    “Il calcio non è uguale a tutti i livelli, ci sono i livelli. Io ho lavorato duro per avere una chance, ma grande merito di questi risultati è dei calciatori. Io sono felice del percorso fatto, ma non abbiamo fatto niente. Nell’essere ambiziosi dobbiamo chiedere molto a noi stessi individualmente e di squadra, questa competizione è meravigliosa ma c’è anche il percorso in campionato. Domani anche se incontriamo un avversario forte servirà una partita importante a prescindere dalle assenze che abbiamo”.

    Come stanno Guendouzi e Dia? Chi può sostituire Guendouzi? Sul mercato ha chiesto delle caratteristiche specifiche alla società?
    “Guendouzi ha avuto un attacco influenzale e per questo è rimasto a Roma, abbiamo anche Dia che stamattina è stato preservato ma è con noi. Devo valutare, è molto probabile che Gila possa giocare a centrocampo perché secondo me lo può fare, ma sto anche valutando alcuni ragazzi che abbiamo portato. Sicuramente qualcuno sarà della partita. Sul mercato capisco che la finestra è aperta ed è un tema, io chiaramente ho parlato con la società delle possibili esigenze della società, ma questo non è compito mio. La mia attenzione è sempre rivolta a chi eventualmente arriva e ai ragazzi che ho a disposizione, io guardo quello che ho e non quello che potrei avere. La mia attenzione è veramente rivolta alla squadra e ai giocatori che ho, domani lo ripeto nonostante le assenze pretendo che la squadra faccia una prestazione importante”.

    Si può sperare di ripetere il miracolo dell’Atalanta dello scorso anno? Cosa può portare Gila da mediano?
    “Gli sto cucendo un ruolo che possa interpretare, sarà importante la sua disponibilità. Si alza di qualche metro, è un ragazzo giovane che avrà un futuro importante e queste possono essere delle opportunità di crescita per lui. Guai a non avere sogni, ma poi bisogna dargli corpo con il lavoro. Ci sono ampi margini di miglioramento e dobbiamo crescere, solo migliorando possiamo arrivare fino in fondo”.

    Qualche giocatore come Tchaouna può essere preservato in chiave mercato?
    “Domani chi gioca veste la maglia della Lazio, siamo tutti professionisti e dobbiamo convivere con la finestra di mercato aperta. Non ho nessun dubbio che sarà un’opportunità individuale e di squadra, domani si gioca una gara di Europa League contro un avversario importante. Questo è l’aspetto che va oltre tutto, servirà una squadra che scende in campo con la voglia e il piglio giusto per fare una grande partita”.

    Si aspettava un cammino così entusiasmante in Europa? Quanto questo cammino è servito per l’autostima della squadra?
    “Vincere le partite fa mentalità, non esiste costruire una mentalità vincente senza vittorie. La squadra deve lavorare nel coraggio e nella fiducia, questo ti porta ad alzare quell’autostima che è fondamentale. Siamo contenti del percorso, vogliamo continuare ma ripeto che gli obiettivi si guardano all’inizio, poi si deve abbassare la testa e lavorare. La cura dei dettagli e il miglioramento che dobbiamo fare nella gestione della partita ci può portare in fondo all’obiettivo, questo è il passo più importante che dobbiamo fare”.

    Cosa conosce del Braga? La Lazio è favorita domani?
    “In queste gare non ci sono dei favoriti. Ho visto molte partite del Braga, è una squadra pericolosa che fa una costruzione verticale e alternano costruzione a tre e a quattro. Abbiamo cercato di preparare bene la partita anche se abbiamo avuto poco tempo, domani affrontiamo un avversario di livello e ci sarà da lottare forte sul campo”.

    È più importante il primo posto in classifica o la gestione delle energie e della squadra?
    “Non possiamo parlare di gestione, dobbiamo affrontare la partita al massimo perché siamo al livello altissimo dell’Europa League. L’aspetto più importante è dentro la partita, non si possono sottovalutare queste partite. Sarebbe l’errore peggiore possibile, l’avversario merita rispetto e lo dobbiamo affrontare nella maniera giusta”.

    Bucsa’s 5-7 7-5 7-5 victory at the WTA 250 event will be a huge reality check for Raducanu, who insisted she was improving after her hefty defeat by Iga Swiatek at the Australian Open last week.

    In a contest that ebbed and flowed, there was hardly anything to separate the pair and the statistics suggested as much. Bucsa won 119 points to Raducanu’s 118, but it was the Spaniard who bossed it in the big moments.

    Raducanu’s second serve told its own sorry story – she landed merely 25 per cent of her points off it – which ultimately allowed Bucsa to dictate from the back of the court, executing her groundstrokes with confidence.

    Bucsa is a successful doubles specialist by trade – she won a bronze medal for Spain alongside Sara Sorribes Tormo at last year’s Paris Olympics – but showed she is still a force to be reckoned with on the singles court by toppling world No 56 Raducanu.

    Bucsa has a fine track record in Asia, having reached the fourth round of last year’s China Open when she defeated 11th seed Liudmila Samsonova and 24th seed Elise Mertens.

    Her father, Ion, represented Moldova in biathlon and was a flagbearer at the Winter Olympics in 1998 and 2002. He has seemingly passed those endurance genes on to his daughter.

    The match tipped into its fourth hour when Raducanu, who was broken at 5-5 in the deciding set, fended off two match points. Bucsa, though, meant business, and she closed out victory after Raducanu splayed a forehand wide.

    Raducanu had spoken of the “pressure” she invites with her flimsy second serve in the aftermath of her chastening defeat by Swiatek last week. On this evidence, that element of her game is in most urgent need of work as she bids to climb the rankings in 2025.

    After her premature exit in Singapore, Raducanu could feature as early as next Monday at the Abu Dhabi Open, having received a wildcard for the WTA 500 event.

    Depending on how she fares there, she could then travel to the Qatar Open, which is the first WTA 1000 event of the season. Raducanu entered the tournament last year but fell in the first round to Ukraine’s Anna Kalinina.

    Monday is shaping up to be a memorable night for a pair of Edmonton-based netminders.

    The Edmonton Oilers announced that they have signed University of Alberta goaltender Tyler Palmer to an amateur tryout, and that the U Sports standout will serve as the team’s backup as they host the Seattle Kraken.

    The Oilers are in need of a new face on the bench, as regular starter Stuart Skinner will be away from the team after the birth of a baby boy earlier in the day.

    Calvin Pickard will get the start between the pipes, but it will surely be a special experience for Palmer to join the Oilers.

    Palmer is in his first year with the Golden Bears after playing four WHL seasons with the Victoria Royals and Everett Silvertips. The Fernie, B.C. native holds an 11-4 record with a .914 save percentage and 2.14 goals-against average for the UofA in 17 games this season.

    The Golden Bears currently sit second in the Canada West’s East Division with an 18-6-0 record.
