In a rebuke to Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, the GOP-dominated Florida legislature on Monday quickly gaveled out a special session called by the two-term governor to take up a series of proposals to help implement President Donald Trump‘s immigration crackdown.
State lawmakers then held their own special session, where they passed other immigration bills and also overrode a DeSantis budget veto, the first time in 15 years the legislature has overturned a Florida governor’s veto.
It was a dramatic turn of events for DeSantis, who long enjoyed massive influence over the Florida legislature, especially after his nearly 20-point re-election in 2022.
But following his unsuccessful 2024 White House bid, the now-lame duck governor doesn’t have the same clout over lawmakers that he once enjoyed.

“This would have been unthinkable two years ago,” a Florida-based Republican strategist told Fox News.
The strategist, who asked to remain anonymous to speak more freely, added that “it shows that he’s sunsetting and the legislature is not afraid to buck him.”
DeSantis wanted lawmakers to pass bills that would support the president’s flurry of immigration and border executive orders, signed since last Monday’s inauguration, and Trump’s plans for mass deportation of illegal immigrants.
The governor called for mandating that Florida’s counties and cities participate in the federal deportation program and wants the power to suspend officials who do not comply. He also proposed to make it a state crime to enter the nation illegally, and he wants to mandate that people show identification and their immigration status before sending money back home.
“We’ve got to make sure that we are working hand-in-hand with the Trump administration,” DeSantis emphasized last week in an interview on Fox News’ “Ingraham Angle.”
He added that the special legislative session would help “to facilitate the Trump administration’s mission.”

Eleven bills were filed on the eve of the special session by Florida lawmakers. Among them are measures to create a state immigration czar and to allow the governor to activate the national and state guards for immigration enforcement.
Under Florida’s constitution, if the governor calls for a special session, lawmakers are obligated to show up at the capitol in Tallahassee. However, the top Republicans in the state House and Senate say that while they support Trump’s immigration efforts, the special session is unnecessary with the regularly scheduled legislative session scheduled for early March.
“It’s not premature,” DeSantis told Fox News. “We’ve been waiting four years to have a partner in Washington, D.C., on this issue. We have a sense of urgency. We have to get the job done. No more dragging your feet.”
But lawmakers quickly adjourned and then held their own session.
“I believe special sessions should be used sparingly,” state House Speaker Daniel Perez, a Republican, said during his address to the House. “They should not be stunts designed to generate headlines.
GOP state Senate president Ben Albritton said “sometimes leadership isn’t about being out front on an issue. It’s actually about following the leader you trust. For my part, I trust President Trump,”

The governor, in a statement Monday afternoon, said “though the Florida legislature’s leadership initially said the call for a special session on immigration enforcement was “premature,” they have now finally agreed to come in and do their job.”
“I am glad the Legislature’s bill includes many of my proposals, including the long-overdue need to eliminate tuition waivers for illegal immigrant students. But overall, their new bill is substantially weaker than the proposals I outlined and that are necessary to ensure that Florida leads on fulfilling the Trump Administration’s mandate to enforce immigration law and deport illegal aliens,” he emphasized.
DeSantis, who waged a bitter and unsuccessful primary challenge against Trump for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, was praised by the then-president-elect earlier this month.
“Thank you Ron, hopefully other governors will follow!” Trump wrote in a social media post after DeSantis announced the special session.
Dan Eberhart, an oil drilling chief executive officer and a prominent Republican donor and bundler who raised big bucks for Trump’s 2020 and 2024 campaigns, but who supporter DeSantis in the 2024 GOP presidential primaries, told Fox News that “Gov. DeSantis is right about the issues that need to be addressed. This was just a matter of timing,”
Republican lawmakers in Florida have made a bold move by defying Governor Ron DeSantis and scrapping his proposed special session. Instead, they have called their own session to address key issues facing the state.
The decision to bypass DeSantis’ special session comes amidst growing tensions between the governor and members of his own party. Many Republican lawmakers have voiced concerns over DeSantis’ handling of various issues, including COVID-19 response, education funding, and environmental policy.
By taking matters into their own hands, Republican lawmakers are asserting their independence and showing that they are not afraid to challenge the governor’s authority. This move could signal a shift in power dynamics within the GOP in Florida, as lawmakers seek to assert their own agenda and priorities.
It remains to be seen how Governor DeSantis will respond to this bold move by his fellow Republicans. Will he try to regain control and assert his authority, or will he work with lawmakers to find common ground and address the pressing issues facing the state?
One thing is clear: Republican lawmakers in Florida are not afraid to defy their own party leader in order to do what they believe is best for the people of their state. This could be a turning point in Florida politics, and it will be fascinating to see how it unfolds in the coming days and weeks.

In their latest skit, Christina, 41, and Heather, 37, sit down for a “therapy session” at Christina’s Newport Beach home to discuss some of Tarek’s problematic behavior they’ve both experienced over the years. The Instagram Reel was shared jointly by Heather, Tarek and Christina on Monday, Jan. 20.
“So Heather, what brings you in today?” Christina asks.
Heather jokingly responds, “Christina, it’s Tarek. He’s driving me absolutely crazy. I just don’t know what to do at this point. He farts under the covers, and he holds my head under. I can’t deal with it anymore. Did he ever do those things to you?”
The Christina on the Coast star jokes back, “Sometimes he would throw them at me.”
“He does that to me too. Every single day, I don’t know what personality I’m going to get,” Heather says. “He yells at me, and then everything’s fine two minutes later.”
After Heather says that “it’s been almost six years of this” and Tarek has only gotten “15% better,” Christina tries to console her by looking at the situation in a more positive light.
“Look at what the next six years would be. Another, I would say, 30% better,” she says, followed by Heather asking, “Can I last that long, Christina? You lasted what, nine years, was it?”
Christina responds, “Yeah, but I will tell you this – the grass isn’t greener on the other side. So look, he’s gotten 15% better, so there’s probably another 30%. By the time that you’re 60, he’s going to be really nice. There’s hope.”

She continues to reflect: “I feel like all men are big kids, though. I mean, I had the cargo shorts, stinky sandal version,” and Heather chimes in, “In the same black shirt every day?”
Tarek then bursts into the room, startling Christina. Heather tells her husband, “We’re having a therapy session. About you.”
“I told Heather to stick it out,” Christina notes to her ex, before telling Heather, “You got this girl.” The skit ends with Christina giving Heather a big hug as she warns Tarek to “behave.”

The trio’s most recent skit comes nearly a week before the premiere of their HGTV series, The Flip Off, out Wednesday, Jan. 29. The house flipping showdown will follow Heather and Tarek as they compete together against Christina and her “trusted team,” according to the network.
This is the first time Christina, Tarek and Heather are starring in a show together. Christina and Tarek previously co-hosted their show, Flip or Flop, which ended in March 2022. The pair — who share daughter Taylor, 14, and son Brayden, 9, together — continued to film the series for several seasons even after their dramatic 2016 split.
While Heather and Christina didn’t always get along, the pair have since made amends and now consider each other friends. Christina told PEOPLE in July 2024 that she and Heather have been “close for a while now” and that she thinks “she’s an amazing stepmom.”
The Flip Off premieres Wednesday, Jan. 29 on HGTV.
In a recent episode of Flip or Flop, Christina Haack and Heather El Moussa sat down for a heart-to-heart conversation about their co-star and Christina’s ex-husband, Tarek El Moussa. The two women discussed their feelings and experiences working with Tarek, and opened up about the challenges they have faced in their personal and professional relationships.
During the emotional conversation, Christina and Heather shared their perspectives on Tarek’s behavior and communication style, and reflected on how their experiences with him have impacted their own lives and careers. The two women also discussed their own friendship and how they have supported each other through the ups and downs of working in the high-pressure world of reality TV.
The candid and vulnerable conversation between Christina and Heather was a powerful reminder of the importance of communication and empathy in navigating complex relationships and emotions. It also highlighted the strength and resilience of these two talented women as they continue to thrive in their careers and personal lives.

Max Scherzer believes he still has enough left in the tank to pitch at a competitive level in 2025, and while the 40-year-old free-agent has yet to find a home for the upcoming season, both New York teams have been keeping tabs on his offseason work.
According to Pat Ragazzo of SI.com, the Mets and Yankees were among at least eight clubs that attended Scherzer’s pro day at Cressey Sports Performance in Florida earlier this week.
Scherzer, who’ll one day be enshrined in Cooperstown, is striving for a bounce-back campaign. His past two seasons have been marred by a variety of injuries, as he’s logged only 88.1 innings since the Mets unloaded him to the Texas Rangers ahead of the 2023 trade deadline. He was limited to nine appearances in 2024 due to back, shoulder, and hamstring issues.
While teams rightfully have questions about Scherzer’s health and durability – he’s produced just one 30-start season since 2019 – starting pitching is always in demand. The three-time Cy Young winner still logged a 3.57 ERA with 93 strikeouts in 17 outings for Texas, averaging 88-mph on his fastball with a 22.6 strikeout rate.
Whether or not Scherzer finds his next opportunity in New York, he’s already achieved Hall of Fame success. Since making his major league debut in 2008, the eight-team All-Star and two-time world champion has won 216 games and finished top five in Cy Young voting eight times. He also led the National League in strikeouts from 2016-18 and currently ranks 11th all-time in punchouts (3,407).
According to recent reports, the New York Mets and New York Yankees were among the teams in attendance at Max Scherzer’s recent throwing session. The star pitcher, who is currently a free agent, showcased his skills to a number of interested teams as he looks to find a new home for the upcoming season.
Both the Mets and Yankees are in need of pitching help, and Scherzer would be a valuable addition to either team’s rotation. With his impressive track record and proven ability to perform in high-pressure situations, Scherzer could be a game-changer for whichever team lands him.
It’s unclear at this point where Scherzer will ultimately sign, but with the Mets and Yankees showing interest, it’s clear that there will be no shortage of suitors for the talented pitcher. Stay tuned for more updates as the offseason continues to unfold.
Brazilian influencer Ricardo Godoidied while he was under anesthesia for a tattoo procedure. He was 45.
“Today we say goodbye to Ricardo Godoi, an incredible person who left his mark on the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him,” a Monday, January 20, statement on Godoi’s official Instagram read. “His joy, generosity and light will continue to be present in our memories and every story he helped build.”
The statement continued, “May he rest in peace. Our condolences to family & friends .”
Godoi reportedly enlisted a local tattoo studio to complete a new piece of art on his back, according to multiple outlets. He allegedly went into cardiac arrest on the operating table. An investigation is ongoing.
Courtesy of Chris O’Donnell/Instagram; Courtesy of Kyle Marisa Roth/Instagram The deaths of several online stars have shaken the TikTok community — and broken the hearts of fans — over the years. Taylor Rousseau Grigg died in October 2024 at the age of 25 after battling undisclosed medical issues. Her husband, Cameron Grigg, announced her death […]
“What happened was that, at the beginning of the sedation and intubation, he went into cardiac arrest,” the studio owner told the Daily Mail in a statement. “That occurred before they even started tattooing him. He was quickly checked and a cardiologist was called in to try to revive him, unfortunately without success.”
According to the outlet, Godoi was scheduled to get the tattoo while under general anesthesia, sedation and intubation.
“To do this, we hired a private hospital with all the staff, equipment and anesthetic drugs necessary for the safety of the procedure,” Monday’s statement continued. “We also hired a doctor with a specialism in anesthesiology and experience in intubation, whose documentation was approved by the hospital.”
From filmmakers to artists, Hollywood lost several stars in 2025. News broke on January 4 that Aubrey Plaza’s husband, Jeff Baena, died one day earlier at the age of 47. Per medical examiner records viewed by Us Weekly, Baena died by suicide. “This is an unimaginable tragedy,” Plaza’s rep said in a statement to Us […]
The message concluded, “Blood tests were requested beforehand, which showed no explicit risk in carrying out the procedure. Ricardo signed the consent form regarding the risk of the procedure.’”

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Governor Gavin Newsom agreed to add the Southern California wildfires to a special session of the legislature.
This comes after Republicans in Sacramento called for that special session to deal solely with the wildfires and not focus on the incoming Trump administration.
Governor Newsom reached a deal that adds $25 million to a special session aimed at “Trump-proofing” California. One local assemblyman said that’s not what Californians are asking for.
“Republicans are standing together calling for action, immediate action, on recovery to ensure that these communities recover from this disaster,” Assemblyman Republican leader James Gallagher said.
California Republicans are calling for Governor Newsom to hold a special session to tackle wildfires.
“We should not be distracted by a special session to pay more government lawyers to sue Donald Trump,” Gallagher said.
Republicans say this special session would increase funding for wildfire prevention, enhance criminal penalties for arsonists and stabilize the insurance market to name a few. Central Valley representative David Tangipa was at the press conference in Sacramento.
“There are more areas that are under risk of more wildfires If it’s going to happen in January and it’s happening in L.A., it will happen in the high Sierras,” Assemblyman for District 8 David Tangipa said.
Tangipa called out Governor Newsom for approving an additional $25 million bill to be included in the special session: one for battling the Trump administration and one for immigration resources.
“This $50 million should be designated to what Californians are really thinking about today. And I don’t think that they’re thinking about some person in D.C. right now,” Tangipa said.
However, worries about president-elect Trump threatening to withhold federal aid to battle fires are real.
“He did it to California back before I was even governor in 2018 until he found out folks in Orange County voted for him and then he decided to give the money. So he’s been at this for years and years and years,” Newsom said.
State Senate Budget Committee Chair Scott Wiener announced the additional $25 million, saying California faces two massive challenges, one being “an incoming federal administration that has vowed to make it harder for Los Angeles to recover, by withholding disaster relief and deporting immigrant Angelenos who have been impacted by the fires and who are actively helping their neighbors.”
We asked Tangipa about Trump threatening to withhold funds from California.
“If we feel like we’re going to lose out on federal funds, then that probably means that California is doing something that, one, the federal government that is elected doesn’t coincide or at least agree with. And so when we’re looking at it that way, it’s not California’s way or not,” Tangipa said.
Tangipa said these fires are a non-partisan issue and that he hopes California lawmakers can come together to help Los Angeles.

California Republicans are urging Governor Gavin Newsom to convene a special session of the state legislature to address the ongoing wildfire crisis. As wildfires continue to ravage the state, Republican lawmakers are pushing for immediate action to prevent further destruction and loss of life.
In a letter to Governor Newsom, Republican leaders emphasized the need for a comprehensive wildfire prevention and response plan that includes increased funding for firefighting resources, improved forest management practices, and measures to reduce the risk of wildfires in high-risk areas.
“We simply cannot afford to wait any longer to take decisive action to combat these devastating wildfires,” said Assembly Minority Leader Marie Waldron. “A special session of the legislature is needed to address this urgent crisis and ensure the safety and well-being of all Californians.”
Democrats have also expressed support for a special session to address the wildfire crisis, signaling a potential bipartisan effort to tackle this pressing issue. With wildfires continuing to burn across the state, the need for immediate action is clear.
As California grapples with the impacts of climate change and ongoing drought conditions, Republicans are calling for swift and decisive measures to protect communities and prevent further devastation. A special session of the legislature could provide the necessary platform for lawmakers to come together and develop a comprehensive strategy to combat wildfires and safeguard the state’s residents and natural resources.
A cartoon image of US President-elect Donald Trump with cryptocurrency tokens, depicted in front of the White House to mark his inauguration, displayed at a Coinhero store in Hong Kong, China, on Monday, Jan. 20, 2025.
The flagship cryptocurrency was last lower by more than 2% at $103,558.38, according to Coin Metrics, in what appeared to be a “buy the rumor sell the news” event. Overnight, it rose as high as $109,350.72.
Bitcoin gained steam last week as traders anticipated the inauguration, viewed by many in crypto as symbolic of a new golden era of more supportive crypto regulation in the U.S. Ahead of the event, speculation that Trump might announce an executive order on crypto early in his new term grew. Enthusiasts hope to see him create a crypto advisory council and establish a national bitcoin stockpile or reserve.
Bitcoin hits a new record ahead of Trump inauguration
Over the weekend, Trump launched the “Official Trump” meme coin, which on Monday morning had risen to a more than $10 billion market cap, according to CoinGecko. Returning First Lady Melania Trump launched her own “Melania” meme coin Sunday. They have attracted $31 billion and $7.2 billion in trading volumes, respectively, over the last day.
“Rumors that cryptocurrency may be declared a national interest by the United States during the inauguration are having a positive effect on the price of bitcoin,” Gracy Chen, CEO of crypto exchange Bitget, told CNBC. “I don’t believe the rise in bitcoin’s price is due to the launch of new meme tokens. Rather … without the release of the Trump family tokens, bitcoin’s price would have grown more. Instead, capital shifted to new coins, limiting overall growth.”
The broader crypto market, as measured by the CoinDesk 20 index, fell 3.6% on Monday afternoon. Solana, down 9%, led the losses following a 14% rally over the weekend, benefitting from the Trump meme coin being launched on the popular Ethereum alternative network.
Meme coins are considered the riskiest corner of the already risky cryptocurrency market, but the Trumps’ coin launches over the weekend gave traders further conviction that the incoming administration will be positive for the industry, according to Joel Kruger, market strategist at LMAX.
“There is a logic here that would suggest that putting a stamp of approval on what could be perceived as the wildest of crypto assets, meme coins, is the best way to send a message of just how supportive the market should expect the administration to be when it comes to embracing crypto and making America a major player in the space,” he told CNBC.
Noelle Acheson, economist and author of the “Crypto is Macro Now” newsletter, echoed that sentiment, calling the meme drops net positive and “a sign he is very much in favor of new ideas [and] new markets.”
Bitcoin’s new record opens the door to a possible upside extension to $130,000, LMAX’s Kruger added.
Don’t miss these cryptocurrency insights from CNBC Pro:
Bitcoin soared to a new all-time high of $109,000 on the day of President Trump’s inauguration, as investors eagerly awaited the impact of his policies on the cryptocurrency market. However, the digital currency quickly reversed course in a volatile session, shedding nearly half of its value before stabilizing.
The sudden spike and subsequent drop in Bitcoin’s price left many traders puzzled, with some attributing the sharp swings to market manipulation and profit-taking. Others speculated that the uncertainty surrounding Trump’s presidency and the potential for regulatory crackdowns on cryptocurrencies were to blame.
Despite the rollercoaster ride, Bitcoin enthusiasts remained optimistic about the long-term prospects of the digital currency, pointing to its growing acceptance among mainstream investors and the increasing adoption of blockchain technology.
As the dust settled on the tumultuous trading day, Bitcoin found support at around $60,000, prompting some to view the pullback as a buying opportunity. Whether the cryptocurrency will be able to regain its previous highs and continue its upward trajectory remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – the volatility of Bitcoin is here to stay.

A pair of high-stakes judicial decisions will shape the next few weeks of the already messy Minnesota legislative session, including a delayed special election to determine control of the House, and a delayed criminal trial that threatens to dominate the proceedings of the Senate.
The Minnesota Supreme Court canceled a special election in House District 40B that had been called by Gov. Tim Walz for Jan. 28, ruling that Walz wrongly called for the election on Dec. 27 even though the law required him to wait until until after the beginning of the legislative session on Tuesday.
Walz called the election after Democrat Curtis Johnson resigned the seat when a judge ruled he didn’t live in the district he sought to represent.
The outcome is significant because Republicans currently hold a 1-vote advantage in the House, 67-66, and the special election in the heavily Democratic north metro district is expected to bring the House to 67-67, necessitating a power-sharing agreement.
Democrats have thus far boycotted GOP-led House proceedings in an effort to deny a quorum, which is the minimum number of members that must be present to conduct business. The two sides will make oral arguments at the Supreme Court next week.
The delayed special election will force Democrats to hold out longer, exposing them to attacks from Republicans that they aren’t showing up for work.
Separately, a judge granted state Sen. Nicole Mitchell’s request to delay her criminal trial until after the legislative session. The Woodbury Democrat pleaded not guilty in August after she was charged with felony burglary for allegedly breaking into her stepmother’s Detroit Lakes home in April.
Her lawyers cited a Minnesota law and 2007 appellate ruling stating that legal proceedings involving legislators should be delayed until after the legislative session.
Becker County District Judge Michael Fritz granted the motion, ruling that “if a legislator is forced to stand trial during the legislative session, their constituents would be without a voice during that session.”
Republicans signaled they will turn up the heat on Democrats if they continue to allow Mitchell to vote.
Sen. Mark Johnson, R-East Grand Forks, called Mitchell’s request “an abuse of her status as a senator.” The Republican leader added: “This is not a victimless crime; this delay revictimized those involved, and Senate Republicans will not stand idly by while Sen. Mitchell abuses her position to deny justice.”
The Senate is currently tied 33-33, but a special election Jan. 28 in a northeast Minneapolis district is expected to give Democrats a one-seat majority. The two parties have worked out a power-sharing agreement until then.
Democrats have sought to isolate Mitchell, stripping her of committee assignments and barring her from their caucus meetings. Leading Democrats, including Walz, have encouraged her to resign. Thus far, Senate Democratic leader Sen. Erin Murphy has argued Mitchell deserves due process before the Senate considers expulsion.
The trial delay may have Democrats reconsidering.
In a shocking turn of events, two court decisions have thrown the Minnesota legislative session into chaos. The decisions, handed down by the state Supreme Court, have upended the carefully laid plans of lawmakers and set the stage for a contentious battle in the coming weeks.
The first decision struck down a controversial law that would have allowed lawmakers to bypass the governor and veto certain agency spending. The court ruled that the law violated the separation of powers and was unconstitutional, sending shockwaves through the Capitol.
The second decision, even more surprising, invalidated the results of a recent special election that had given Republicans control of the state Senate. The court found that there were irregularities in the voting process and ordered a new election to be held.
These decisions have thrown the Minnesota legislative session into turmoil, with lawmakers scrambling to come up with a new plan to move forward. With time running out before the session ends, the pressure is on to find a solution that will satisfy all parties involved.
Stay tuned for updates as this developing story unfolds.
