  • The Eaton Rapids Library is set to offer the Vita program

    • The Eaton Rapids Library is set to offer the Vita program.
    • The Vita program will help neighbors get taxes done for free.
    • Watch the video above to learn about the Vita program.

(The following is a transcription of the full broadcast story)

For one of my neighbors, having to get new brakes is connected to getting her taxes done.It all has to do with that tax refund. She’s able to get her taxes done for free, and I’m showing you how some of my other neighbors can, too.

Meet Eaton Rapids neighbor Megan Crawford. She tells me she paid $800 last week to get new brakes.

“Repairs are not cheap on any vehicle I drive. A truck, unfortunately, repairs a little more,” Eaton Rapids resident Megan Crawford said.

And just like most of my neighbors can relate to car expenses, most can also relate to filing and paying taxes. With that in mind, the Eaton Rapids Library is set to offer what’s called the VITA program. That’s short for volunteer income tax assistance.

“Free tax prep services for households earning up to $67,000,” Eaton Rapids Library Director Bryonna Barton said.

Eaton Rapids Library Director Bryonna Barton told me that free tax service can be beneficial for neighbors who are looking to save money.

“People can get their taxes done for free, huge relief on their financial burdens or sure, taxes are expensive to get done,” Eaton Rapids Library Director Bryonna Barton said.

And Crawford plans to use the program.

“It’s just beneficial because everything has gone up in cost,” Eaton Rapids resident Megan Crawford said.

“If you can save a tax prepare cost which is anywhere from $150 to $300-plus for your taxes is worth it,” Eaton Rapids resident Megan Crawford said.

And as a mom, she qualifies for the federal child tax credit of $2,000 per year. And with the VITA program, she’s getting free help to make sure she sees that money.

“$2,000 can be a home repair,” Eaton Rapids resident Megan Crawford said.

The VITA program starts this Friday at the Eaton Rapids Library, going from from 10 in the morning to 2. There will be another session every month through April. Here is the link on how to apply.

  • Colin Cowherd says he’s getting ‘very, very sick’ on set of FS1 show

Colin Cowherd hosts his own talk show for 3 hours every weekday on FS1. Love him or hate him, the guy shows up and talks by himself with very few breaks.

On Monday’s show, however, Cowherd didn’t look so hot. That was confirmed by the host himself toward the end of a segment about the blockbuster NBA trade sending Luka Doncic to the Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis.

As you can see below, Cowherd was struggling through the segment and eventually said he was getting sick and needed to cut to commercial:

“Folks, I am going to take a break,” Cowherd said suddenly. “I am getting very, very sick very, very quickly on the set. We will return.”

As you can see in this video, he wasn’t looking so hot earlier in the segment, either:

When the show came back from a lengthy commercial break, Jason Mcintyre was in the host’s chair. He said Cowherd was feeling under the weather and was relaxing in a dressing room.

The show’s official social media account confirmed that Cowherd was OK shortly thereafter, acknowledging that Mcintyre would be hosting the rest of Monday’s show:

Hopefully Cowherd can return to the show later this week. With the Super Bowl on Sunday, you know this is a week he doesn’t want to miss.

Cowherd, known for his hot takes and strong opinions on all things sports, admitted that he has been struggling with an illness that has been affecting his performance on set.

“I don’t know what’s going on, but I am getting very, very sick on set,” Cowherd said. “I’ve been feeling off for the past few days and it’s starting to really impact my ability to do the show.”

Despite his illness, Cowherd assured viewers that he is doing everything he can to push through and continue delivering the content that fans have come to expect from him.

Fans of the show took to social media to send their well wishes and support to Cowherd, with many expressing concern for his health and urging him to take care of himself.

  • Blues finally green light big-name exit as transfer conditions are set in stone

AC Milan are confident they can bring Chelsea misfit Joao Felix to the Italian giants before the transfer window shuts, TEAMtalk can reveal.

The Portugal international swapped Atletico Madrid for Chelsea last summer for a fee in the region of £45.5 million (€53m, $59m) but he has struggled for game time thus far.

Felix, who had a loan spell with the Blues in the second half of the 2022/23 season, has made 20 appearances in all competitions this term but he has just three Premier League starts to his name.

Head coach Enzo Maresca admitted it is “difficult” to hand regular minutes to the 25-year-old, particularly when Cole Palmer has been the club’s standout attacker.

TEAMtalk previously revealed that Milan wanted to complete a deal for the former Barcelona loanee, with head coach Sergio Conceicao a ‘big admirer’ of his talents.

Now, our sources state the Serie A team believe they can get this move over the line, with Chelsea giving a loan move the green light. We understand that a buy option is not out of the question and Felix himself is pushing for a San Siro transfer.

Furthermore, Chelsea are evaluating all loan options, so it is not set in stone that Milan seal the deal with this one.

DON’T MISS: Fabrizio Romano gives two Chelsea exits Here we Go confirmation as FOUR departures hurtle closer

Maresca admits to ‘difficult’ Felix situation

With Nicolas Jackson leading Chelsea’s attack and Palmer often behind him, that has made it difficult for the versatile Felix and Christopher Nkunku to get much of a look in.

Both have been linked with a Stamford Bridge exit, something Maresca has not ruled out.

“The only thing I’ve said since the start of this season is that it’s difficult to play him with so many attacking players. In my idea it means that if Joao plays, it means Cole [Palmer] doesn’t play. Or, if Joao [Felix] plays he has to play with Cole together, but it depends on the game,” he said last month.

“For me it’s quite easy, we have three players but they are more or less similar; Cole, Joao and Christopher Nkunku. Joao played some games, Christopher also played and they both started against Ipswich and Southampton they played, Leicester they played.

“Some games they can both play together, but not every game because every game is a bit different.”

Chelsea transfer roundup: Garnacho latest, Man City ace targeted

All eyes are on whether or not Alejandro Garnacho will leave Manchester United before the transfer window shuts at 11pm on Monday.

The Chelsea-linked winger is said to be interested in a Blues move but there are a number of reasons why that may not happen.

Chelsea are reportedly plotting a last-ditch move for Manchester City star Nico O’Reilly, after giving up on United’s Kobbie Mainoo.

The 19-year-old would be a cheaper option, as would Saint-Etienne midfielder Mathis Amougou.

Finally, Tottenham are trying to gazump Chelsea in the race to sign Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi – who is into the last 18 months of his contract.

Who has been Chelsea’s biggest flop of the Todd Boehly era?

After weeks of speculation and negotiations, Blues have finally given the green light for a big-name exit as transfer conditions have been set in stone. The player in question has been the subject of intense interest from several top clubs, but it seems that a deal is finally in the works.

Fans have been eagerly awaiting news of this transfer, and now it seems that their wishes will soon be granted. The player’s departure is sure to have a significant impact on the team, but with the transfer conditions now firmly established, it looks like the move is all but certain.

Stay tuned for more updates as this exciting transfer saga unfolds.

  • Matt Rhule set to hire Mike Ekeler as special teams coordinator

Nebraska football and head coach Matt Rhule have found its next special teams coordinator.

Inside Nebraska can confirm Mike Ekeler will lead Nebraska’s special teams in 2025. Ekeler spent the past four years on Josh Heupel’s staff at Tennessee as special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach.

Ekeler has plenty of ties to the state of Nebraska and the Husker football program. He’s from David City and coached Nebraska’s linebackers for three seasons for Bo Pelini from 2008-10.

Ekeler replaces former Nebraska special teams coordinator Ed Foley, who Rhule hired to his first staff in December 2022 but was let go by Rhule in early January upon his contract expiring on Dec. 31, 2024. That decision came after the Huskers’ major two-year struggles on special teams, the worst of which came during the 2024 season and ultimately culminated in the biggest breaking point – game-changing mistakes by the special teams units that paved the way for the Huskers’ 13-10 loss at Iowa in November.

Rhule is now turning to Ekeler in the mission to turn things around on those special teams units.

Baylor head coach Matt Rhule is reportedly set to hire Mike Ekeler as the special teams coordinator for the Bears. Ekeler, who most recently served as the inside linebackers coach at North Carolina, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the role.

Known for his high energy and attention to detail, Ekeler has a proven track record of success in special teams coaching. He has previously held positions at schools such as Georgia, Nebraska, USC, and Indiana, where he helped develop some of the top special teams units in the country.

Rhule’s decision to bring Ekeler on board is a strategic move aimed at bolstering Baylor’s special teams performance and overall success on the field. With Ekeler’s leadership and guidance, the Bears are sure to see improvements in their kicking, punting, and return game.

Fans are excited to see what Ekeler will bring to the table and are hopeful that his addition will help elevate Baylor’s special teams to new heights in the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Desperation a factor on both sides as Mountaineers set for clash with Bearcats

CINCINNATI — West Virginia put itself in good position to earn an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament by winning 13 of its first 17 games, including four victories over ranked foes, three of which were in the top 10 at the time.

For that to still be the case in the near future, the Mountaineers need to put an end to a losing streak that’s stretched three games over the last two weeks.

The first opportunity comes at 2 p.m. Sunday in a matchup with Cincinnati at Fifth Third Arena that will be carried by ESPN+.

“It’s a long season and it’s a grind. We still have 11 games left, so there are lots of opportunities to go win games,” first-year WVU head coach Darian DeVries said. “They’ve put themselves in a good position to survive a stretch like this where you go through a three-game losing streak, but at some point you have to put the brakes on and we have to get back on the other side of that column. Every night, there’s an opportunity going forward where it’s a Quad 1, Quad 2-type gam,  and we have to win our share of those.”

During the skid, which began with a home loss to Arizona State, continued with a setback at Kansas State and most recently included another home loss to No. 6 Houston, WVU has struggled defensively and suffered through three of its five lowest-scoring games this season.

The Mountaineers (13-7, 4-5) have fallen to 15th in scoring among Big 12 Conference teams at 70.1 points on average — one spot behind the Bearcats and their average of 71. In Big 12 play, WVU remains 15th with an average of 61 points, while UC falls to last in the league with a mark of 60.7.

West Virginia guard Javon Small remains the Big 12’s leading scorer with an average of 19.1 points, though he’s been held in check twice during the skid, totaling 22 points in the losses to the Sun Devils and Cougars. Small is consistently draw the bulk of attention from opposing defenses that often includes sending double teams his way in an effort to make another Mountaineer beat them.

“We did a lot of stuff tonight with Javon off the ball to try and get it back to him and get him on the move a little bit more,” DeVries said of his season-low eight-point effort against Houston, which came on only seven field-goal attempts. “Houston is a good defense and they’re able to show another guy out or switch it to keep him from coming off clean. But we did get those switches, because he was going to come off clean or get an open three and that gave us some advantages on the interior. Something to build on for us as we continue to try to find different ways to utilize all the guys that are out there.”

After trailing the Cougars 39-19 at halftime, West Virginia scored the first 11 points of the second half and was within five with more than 6 minutes remaining, before falling short down the stretch.

Still, DeVries liked much of what his team displayed over the final 20 minutes in a matchup against one of the nation’s top teams, which included disruptive defense that helped create transition offense and led to 12-for-21 shooting.

“I told them to leave this building tonight only focused on what it looked and it felt like in the second half,” DeVries said. “Make that their mindset again and approach as we go into practice and get ready for Cincinnati. That team in that 15-minute stretch, we’ll take anywhere, because they’ll go compete and line up and go do some things that can be pretty special.”

For as much as the Mountaineers are in need of a win, Cincinnati (12-8, 2-7) could be even more desperate after following up two Big 12 victories with three straight losses, including setbacks at BYU and Utah over the last week.

The Bearcats began their second season in the Big 12 with a No. 20 national ranking, but have struggled mightily since completing their non-conference schedule with 10 wins in 11 games.

Four players average double-figure scoring for UC, though the Bearcats do not have a player among the top 25 scoring leaders in the Big 12.

Simas Lukosius leads the squad with an average of 12.2 points. He does a large portion of his damage from the perimeter and 47 of his 85 field goals are three-pointers.

Guard Jizzle James and swingman Dan Skillings Jr. follow at 10.8 points, while Texas transfer Dillon Mitchell averages 10.6 points and provides defensive versatility with his abundance of athleticism.

With the exception of Lukosius, UC has struggled shooting from long range and its 31.7 percent shooting on triples is ahead of only TCU in the Big 12. Excluding Lukosius, the Bearcats are shooting 29.6 percent on threes.

UC has won 12 of 23 all-time meetings against the Mountaineers, including six of eight in Cincinnati and four or five at Fifth Third Arena.

The upcoming showdown between the Mountaineers and Bearcats is shaping up to be a must-watch game, with desperation playing a key factor for both teams.

On one side, the Mountaineers are coming off a tough loss and are hungry for a win to keep their playoff hopes alive. They know that a victory over the Bearcats could be the spark they need to turn their season around and make a push for the top spot in their conference.

Meanwhile, the Bearcats are also feeling the pressure as they look to maintain their undefeated record and solidify their spot as a top contender in the conference. They know that a loss to the Mountaineers could derail their championship aspirations and put a dent in their playoff hopes.

With both teams feeling the weight of desperation, this matchup is sure to be intense and hard-fought. Fans can expect to see a battle of wills as these two teams leave it all on the field in pursuit of victory.

Be sure to tune in to see which team will come out on top in this clash of the titans.

  • Digital groundhog from W.Va. set to overtake end-of-winter tradition

Digital groundhog from W.Va. set to overtake end-of-winter tradition
No one’s saying that we should turn our backs on the groundhog, but there’s an easier way, and the groundhog gets to sleep in.

PAX, W.Va. — While the U.S. and Canada turn to the groundhog on February 2 for an end-of-winter forecast, a new online tool created in West Virginia is poised for a stand-off with the scrappy rodent.

Created by West Virginia developer Jonathan Moore, the “” uses real-time weather data and historical temperature trends to estimate whether spring will arrive early or if winter will hold on for six more weeks.

According to tradition, if a groundhog leaves its burrow on that day and sees its shadow, winter will last another six weeks. It’s a cloudy day and its shadow doesn’t appear, warmer weather will arrive sooner.

Moore says he doesn’t have anything against groundhogs, but that he found building the app just as much fun as waiting for the groundhog to appear.

“Instead of relying on a groundhog’s shadow, the app uses the user’s location and fetches the latest 14-day temperature forecast,” he said. “It then contrasts that with last year’s average February temperatures.”

Groundhog lore in West Virginia is partly derived from Pennsylvania Dutch superstitions.

While meteorologists have long scoffed at the idea of shadow-based forecasting, the tradition is a time-honored excuse for a late-winter celebration.

It derives from the  superstition that if a  emerges from its burrow and sees its shadow, it will retreat to its den, and winter will go on for six more weeks. If it doesn’t see its shadow, spring will arrive earlier.

The weather lore was brought from German-speaking areas where the is the forecasting animal. In , the  serves the same purpose, and badgers were only watched when bears were not around. It’s also related to the lore that clear weather on the Christian festival of  forebodes a prolonged winter.

In actuality, meteorlogical spring is reckoned to begin March 1 when winter begins to lose its grip. Astronomical spring is said to begin at the , which usually falls on March 19, 20, and 21.

Though built for fun, the Early Spring Predictor is accurate

Moore’s tool cuts to the chase, offering data-backed predictions immediately. It also features seasonal visuals, changing the background and animations based on whether the result is an early spring or a prolonged winter.

Snowflakes drift across the screen for a winter forecast, while fluffy clouds and a springtime backdrop appear when temperatures are expected to rise.

Moore, who’s a senior software engineer and cybersecurity specialist, is no stranger to web applications. Known for his work on West Virginia Explorer and other digital projects, he created the predictor as a fun, practical way to apply weather data APIs.

“This started as a small coding project, but I realized it could actually provide an interesting, location-based prediction,” Moore said.

“It’s not meant to replace meteorologists, but it gives people a fun way to check if they should start looking forward to spring or brace for more winter.”

While Phil may still be the star attraction on February 2, Moore’s tool offers a 21st-century way to predict the seasonal shift without waiting for a groundhog to emerge from its burrow.

Every year on February 2nd, people across the country eagerly await the prediction of Punxsutawney Phil, the famous groundhog from Pennsylvania, to determine whether we will have six more weeks of winter or an early spring. However, a new contender from West Virginia is set to shake up this age-old tradition.

Introducing the Digital Groundhog, a cutting-edge AI creation that has been programmed to accurately predict the end of winter with unprecedented precision. Developed by a team of tech experts in the Mountain State, this digital groundhog uses sophisticated algorithms and data analysis to make its prediction, leaving traditional methods in the dust.

With its state-of-the-art technology and unmatched accuracy, the Digital Groundhog is poised to overtake Punxsutawney Phil as the go-to source for weather predictions on Groundhog Day. Will this digital newcomer be able to steal the spotlight and become the new face of the end-of-winter tradition? Only time will tell.

Stay tuned on February 2nd to see if the Digital Groundhog’s prediction aligns with Punxsutawney Phil’s, or if this high-tech contender will revolutionize the way we celebrate Groundhog Day. Get ready for a new era of weather forecasting with the Digital Groundhog from West Virginia.

If this is your first time hearing of forecasting groundhog Phil from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania; you probably have a lot of questions.

So, who exactly is the woodchuck, the myth, the legend?

According to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, established in 1886, Phil has been providing his predictions for over a century now.

The lifespan of a groundhog in the wild is around six years but a special “elixir of life” is regularly administered to Phil to keep him “immortal”.

There is, allegedly, only one Phil.

Phil does have a family and has recently become a new father with wife Phyllis bearing him two pups this past Spring named Sunny and Shadow.

Every year on February 2nd, all eyes turn to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where the famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil emerges from his burrow to make his annual weather prediction. Will we have six more weeks of winter or an early spring? The anticipation is palpable as people gather in Punxsutawney for the traditional Groundhog Day festivities.

As the legend goes, if Phil sees his shadow, we can expect six more weeks of winter. But if he doesn’t see his shadow, an early spring is on the way. The origins of this tradition date back to ancient European weather lore, but Punxsutawney Phil has been making his predictions since the 1800s.

Whether you believe in the accuracy of a groundhog’s weather forecasting abilities or not, there’s no denying the fun and excitement that surrounds Groundhog Day. So, bundle up and join in the festivities as we await Punxsutawney Phil’s prediction for the coming weeks. Will it be more winter or an early spring? Only time will tell.

  • IndiGo Set to Soar into Europe with Direct Flights to Amsterdam

IndiGo Airlines is gearing up to make a bold entry into the European market, with plans to launch daily flights to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport from its hubs in Mumbai and Delhi.

The airline, renowned for its dominance in the Indian domestic market, is now setting its sights on international expansion, aiming to connect India more seamlessly with Europe.

Operations are expected to commence in the summer of 2025, marking a significant milestone in IndiGo’s journey toward becoming a global aviation powerhouse.

    A Strategic Move into Europe

Amsterdam, one of Europe’s busiest and most strategically located airports, is a key target for IndiGo as it looks to tap into the growing demand for travel between India and Europe.

With thousands of passengers traveling annually between Amsterdam and major Indian cities like Delhi and Mumbai, the market potential is undeniable.

IndiGo’s entry will not only provide travelers with more affordable options but also intensify competition on these routes, traditionally dominated by legacy carriers.

To support its expansion plans, IndiGo has bolstered its leadership team in Europe.

The airline has appointed experienced aviation professionals to oversee operations and establish its presence in key European markets. This strategic focus on leadership and market development underscores IndiGo’s commitment to making its European venture a success.

    Fleet Upgrades for Long-Haul Operations

IndiGo is preparing its fleet for the demands of long-haul international routes. The airline will soon introduce Airbus A321XLR aircraft, which are designed for extended-range operations with greater fuel efficiency.

Additionally, IndiGo plans to add Airbus A350s to its fleet by 2027, further strengthening its ability to serve distant destinations.

In the short term, IndiGo has secured six Boeing 787 Dreamliners on a wet lease arrangement.

These wide-body aircraft will initially operate on high-demand regional routes before being deployed to Europe. The first two Dreamliners are expected to join the fleet by March 2025, signaling IndiGo’s readiness to take on long-haul operations without delay.

    Overcoming Challenges

While the expansion plan is ambitious, it is not without challenges. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport has faced regulatory hurdles due to proposed reductions in flight operations, which could impact IndiGo’s ability to secure permanent slots. However, the airline is actively engaging with authorities to navigate these obstacles and ensure smooth operations at the airport.

A New Era for Indian Aviation

IndiGo’s push into Europe marks a significant shift in its business strategy as it transitions from being a predominantly domestic carrier to a global player.

With competitive pricing, modern aircraft, and a focus on customer-centric service, IndiGo is well-positioned to disrupt traditional markets and offer travelers new choices for affordable long-haul travel.

As the airline prepares for takeoff into Europe, all eyes are on how this move will reshape connectivity between India and one of the world’s most dynamic regions.

For passengers seeking convenience and value, IndiGo’s arrival in Amsterdam could be just what they’ve been waiting for.
