Phoenix sets 1st of 2025
PHOENIX — It didn’t take long for a daily heat record to be broken in Phoenix in 2025.

The mercury hit 80 degrees at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the National Weather Service uses for the city’s official readings, at 2:25 p.m.

The previous record for Jan. 3 of 79 degrees was set in 1989.

Daily heat record: Nothing new in Phoenix

Arizona’s capital city had just a 13-day break between heat records.

Phoenix had most recently broke a daily heat mark on Dec. 21, when it was 79 degrees.

Overall, the city matched or set a daily temperature record 39 times in 2024, a record.

That included a 21-day streak of records in September and October.

Phoenix finished with an average temperature of 78.6 degrees in 2024, making it the warmest year in city history.

Franz Ferdinand: The Human Fear review – stiffness sets in on stodgy sixth | Franz Ferdinand

For the most part, British indie-mania of the 00s involved a slew of sixth-form poets holding forth over amateurishly jerky guitars: the results were often simultaneously brilliant and deeply cringeworthy. Somehow, Franz Ferdinand managed to establish themselves as a tent pole of the scene while wholly bypassing the awkward young upstart vibe. Frontman Alex Kapranos was in his 30s when the band released their debut album, which combined sharp riffs with arch, arty posturing and lugubrious vocals. Kapranos and co were cooler than their contemporaries in both senses: their aesthetic was less messy and their lyrics less bracingly obvious, but they were also less sweatily relatable.

Franz Ferdinand – Night and Day video

If Franz Ferdinand were the grownups back then, 20 years on they’re positively avuncular. The Human Fear – their sixth album, and first since 2018 – feels markedly middle-aged in tone. Despite opener Audacious kicking off with Kapranos muttering about the disintegration of reality over a pleasingly grainy riff, the song then slows into the kind of sweeping, plodding chorus you could imagine Take That crooning on a teatime chatshow. Other songs (Bar Lonely, Tell Me I Should Stay) channel 70s glam to pleasant but unremarkable ends, while a track called The Doctor – told from the perspective of a man unwilling to vacate his hospital bed (“I have nurses to talk to … and thermometers to hold”) – doesn’t exactly telegraph vitality. There are even a couple of actively eye-watering moments, such as Kapranos singing the praises of a new paramour over Hooked’s novelty EDM-style synths. It’s safe to say that two decades on from their heyday, Franz Ferdinand have finally lost their cool.

Four unseeded semifinalists! Kei Nishikori sets Shang Juncheng clash in Hong Kong
The 19-year-old, coming off a breakout year that saw him crack the Top 50 and lift his maiden ATP trophy in Chengdu, equaled his 2024 Hong Kong run.

“We’ve been playing a lot the last few months,” said Nishikori. “We just played an exhibition last week. I lost, so I have to do better!”

Fellow unseeded competitors Jaume Munar and Alexandre Muller will battle it out for the other championship spot. Munar ousted second seed Lorenzo Musetti, 2-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5, saving two break points in a key game at 5-5 in the second set.

Muller also mounted a comeback with his 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over fourth-seeded compatriot Arthur Fils. He and Munar—both 27—have never met above the ATP Challenger Tour, with all four of those encounters coming on clay.

In a surprising turn of events, the Hong Kong Open has seen four unseeded players make it to the semifinals, with Japanese star Kei Nishikori set to face off against Chinese qualifier Shang Juncheng.
