  • Biden sets presidential pardons, commutations record as he commutes almost 2,500 more sentences


    Washington — President Biden announced Friday that he was commuting the sentences of almost 2,500 people convicted of nonviolent drug offenses, using his final days in office on a flurry of clemency actions meant to nullify prison terms he deemed too harsh.

    The recent round of clemency gives Mr. Biden the presidential record for most individual pardons and commutations issued. The Democrat said he’s seeking to undo “disproportionately long sentences compared to the sentences they would receive today under current law, policy, and practice.”

    “Today’s clemency action provides relief for individuals who received lengthy sentences based on discredited distinctions between crack and powder cocaine, as well as outdated sentencing enhancements for drug crimes,” Mr. Biden said in a statement. “This action is an important step toward righting historic wrongs, correcting sentencing disparities, and providing deserving individuals the opportunity to return to their families and communities after spending far too much time behind bars.”

    The White House didn’t immediately release the names of those receiving commutations.

    Still, Mr. Biden said more could yet be coming, promising to use the time before President-elect Donald Trump is inaugurated Monday to “continue to review additional commutations and pardons.”

    Friday’s action follows Mr. Biden’s commutations last month of the sentences of roughly 1,500 people who were released from prison and placed on home confinement during the coronavirus pandemic, as well as the pardoning of 39 Americans convicted of nonviolent crimes. That was the largest single-day act of clemency in modern history.

    All of this comes as Mr. Biden continues to weigh whether to issue sweeping pardons for officials and allies who the White House fears could be unjustly targeted by Trump’s administration. Though presidential pardoning powers are absolute, such a preemptive move would be a novel and risky use of the president’s extraordinary constitutional power.

    Last month, he also commuted the sentences of 37 of the 40 people on federal death row, converting their punishments to life imprisonment just weeks before Trump, an outspoken proponent of expanding capital punishment, takes office. Trump has vowed to roll back that order after his term begins.

    Mr. Biden also recently pardoned his son Hunter, not just for his convictions on federal gun and tax violations but for any potential federal offense committed over an 11-year period, as the president feared Trump allies would seek to prosecute his son for other offenses.

    If history is any guide, meanwhile, Mr. Biden also is likely to issue more targeted pardons to help allies before leaving the White House, as presidents typically do in some of their final actions.

    Just before midnight on the final night of his first term, Trump, a Republican, signed a flurry of pardons and commutations for more than 140 people, including his former chief strategist, Steve Bannon, rappers Lil Wayne and Kodak Black and former members of Congress.

    Trump’s final act as president in his first term was to announce a pardon for Al Pirro, ex-husband of Fox News Channel host Jeanine Pirro, one of his staunchest defenders. Al Pirro was convicted of conspiracy and tax evasion charges and sentenced to more than two years in prison in 2000.

  • NWS issues extreme cold warning for Atlanta, sets Monday wind chill at zero


    Low temperatures below 20 degrees and winds gusting up to 20 mph will make temperatures feel like they are near or below zero, the National Weather Service said.

    “Dangerously cold wind chills as low as 3 below expected,” NWS said.

    A winter storm watch will also be in effect in metro Atlanta and a large swath of Georgia from Tuesday to Wednesday morning when snowfall could be moderate to heavy. NWS estimates snow accumulations could be between 1 and 3 inches, with some of the heavier snowfall expected in Middle Georgia.

    “Plan on slippery road conditions,” NWS said. “The hazardous conditions could impact the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes.”

    Delta Air Lines warned travel could be affected by the winter weather and issued a waiver for those with flights booked to, from or through Atlanta for Monday or Tuesday, to allow more flexibility to change travel plans to avoid the storm.

    Gov. Brian Kemp said Saturday the state is monitoring and preparing for the incoming winter weather front.

    “I urge all Georgians to take precautions now and ensure you and your family can remain safe in the coming days, especially if icy conditions prevent use of roads,” he said in a social media post.

    NWS cautioned the freezing temperatures could cause water pipes to freeze or rupture, urging residents in affected areas to wrap or drain them. Letting water drip slowly from faucets can also prevent pipes from freezing.

    The agency also recommended people stay indoors or dress in layers, including a hat, face mask and gloves if they must go outside.

    Other parts of the Southeast including Alabama, South Carolina and Florida are also under a cold weather advisory.

    A freeze warning will be in effect in southeast Georgia and North Florida from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday morning, where temperatures will be as low as 26 degrees.

    NWS said the cold wind chills could result in hypothermia or frostbite if precautions are not taken.

    “Appropriate action should be taken to ensure tender vegetation and outdoor pets have adequate protection from the cold temperatures,” NWS said. “Young children, the elderly and the homeless are especially vulnerable to the cold.”

  • Keys ousts Rybakina in Melbourne; sets quarterfinal meeting with Svitolina


    Continuing her hot start to the season, No.19 seed Madison Keys of the United States moved into the Australian Open quarterfinals for the fourth time in her career by grinding out a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 victory over No.6 seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan.

    Keys shook off a second-set lull to topple 2023 Australian Open finalist Rybakina in 1 hour and 49 minutes, moving ahead 3-2 in their head-to-head. Keys is now a win away from reaching her third Australian Open semifinal, having made the final four here in 2015 and 2022.

    “Obviously pretty good first set, and I think I finished the third set really well,” Keys said in press. “There are some things that I can take and learn from the middle of the match, but overall, really happy with how I was able to finish and close out that match.”

    Keys will next take on No.28 seed Elina Svitolina in a quarterfinal showdown. Svitolina came back from a double-break down in the first set to roll past Veronika Kudermetova 6-4, 6-1 in Rod Laver Arena on Monday.

    Keys has a narrow 3-2 head-to-head lead over Svitolina. Their most recent meeting came almost exactly three years ago, also in Australia: Keys beat Svitolina in the first round of the WTA 250 event at Adelaide in 2022, then went all the way to the title.

    Keys’ winning streak extended: Keys did it again in Adelaide this year, winning the WTA 500 title in that city a week ago. The American is now on a nine-match winning streak, and she is the tour leader in match-wins so far this year (overall win-loss record of 10-1 in 2025).

    The 29-year-old Keys brought her sparkling form into her marquee match against 2022 Wimbledon champion Rybakina. The 2017 US Open finalist out-winnered Rybakina by 12 to nine in the first set, and she swatted away the lone break point she faced in the opener.

    Obviously there would be many momentum shifts in a match between two big hitters, and Rybakina took complete charge in the second set. The decisive third set was very much up for grabs as well through 3-3.

    But Keys reclaimed her top form from there, creaming massive returns to stymie Rybakina. A return winner gave Keys the pivotal break for a 4-3 lead, and she slammed her 27th winner of the day to convert her second match point and reach her 11th Grand Slam quarterfinal.

    “At 3-3 [in the third set], I made a pretty conscious decision to really try to take advantage of anything that I got as early as I could in the point,” Keys said. “I felt like from that moment on I really was able to just kind of dictate and run away with the last set.”

    This was Keys’ first Top 10 win at a Grand Slam since she notched back-to-back victories over Jessica Pegula and Marketa Vondrousova to make the 2023 US Open semifinals.

    Surging Svitolina: Former World No.3 Svitolina, meanwhile, continues to rack up strong Grand Slam results. She is into her 12th career Grand Slam quarterfinal, and her first quarterfinal at the Australian Open since 2019.

    Her Slam successes have not dwindled since her return from maternity leave in 2023 either. This is Svitolina’s fourth Slam quarterfinal since she gave birth to daughter Skai in 2022.

    Svitolina reached back-to-back Australian Open quarterfinals in 2018 and 2019. She came close to making another quarterfinal Down Under last year, but she retired in her fourth-round match against Linda Noskova due to a back injury.

    The 30-year-old has gone one further this year, during a fortnight which has already been historic. With her second-round win over Caroline Dolehide, Svitolina became the first Ukrainian player of any gender in the Open Era to post 100 main-draw wins at Grand Slam events.

    “All the four matches that I played here, I’m really happy with my fitness,” Svitolina said afterwards. “I’m really happy with the way I’ve been handling tough physical matches that I had. Yeah, so far so good.”

    It was a tricky start for Svitolina on Monday, as powerful hitting by former World No.9 Kudermetova gave the unseeded player a 4-1, double-break advantage. Kudermetova, by the way, had won both of their previous meetings, each time in three sets.

    However, Svitolina found some of her best shots — including stunning angles and exceptional passes — to reel off five straight games and snatch the one-set lead. Kudermetova, meanwhile, had two visits from the physio in the latter stages of the first set.

    Behind heavier returns, Svitolina took full command in the second set. A pristine volley gave the Ukrainian a break for 3-1, and she eased to an 83-minute win from there. Svitolina converted five of her nine break points on the day.

    “It was tricky today at the beginning,” Svitolina said. “But I’m very proud of myself I could find my way.”

    Is 2025 The Peak Year For Bitcoin Price?

    In its latest weekly report, blockchain intelligence firm CryptoQuant revealed its target for the Bitcoin price in the year 2025. The on-chain analytics platform sheds light on the potential trajectory of the flagship cryptocurrency over the year.

    CryptoQuant projected the price of Bitcoin to reach as high as $249,000 — or at least $145,000 —  in the new year. This represents somewhere between a 45% to 150% positive yearly performance for the world’s largest cryptocurrency.

    The market intelligence expects the Bitcoin price rally to be catalyzed by institutional capital flows, in the context of a favorable regulatory environment, accommodative monetary policy in the United States, and historical cyclical patterns.

    For instance, the imminent inauguration and administration of pro-crypto Donald Trump is expected to see crypto-friendly regulators take office and implement positive executive actions. Hence, CryptoQuant anticipates a Bitcoin demand rise when President Trump returns to the Oval Office.

    Furthermore, optimistic macroeconomic conditions are also expected to play a significant role in the Bitcoin price performance in 2025. “The projected interest rate reductions by the Federal Reserve could provide a favorable environment for capital to flow into risk assets like Bitcoin,” the report read.

    Additionally, 2025 is the last year in Bitcoin’s 4-year cycle, which has been historically correlated with significant price surges. The price of Bitcoin reached a new record high of over $67,000 in the final year of the previous cycle.

    While this historical perspective suggests that the market leader could reach a new all-time high price this year, it also signals the likelihood of a Bitcoin price top in 2025. As of this writing, the Bitcoin price stands at around 104,450, reflecting an over 4% increase in the past day.

    How Much Capital Will Flow Into Bitcoin In 2025?

    According to CryptoQuant, roughly $520 billion could flow into the flagship cryptocurrency this year, especially considering favorable regulatory, monetary, and cyclical conditions. This projection was calculated based on the realized capitalization metric, which is the sum value (in US dollars) of each Bitcoin when it last moved on-chain.

    CryptoQuant noted:

    A total of $86 billion flowed into Bitcoin from 2015 to 2018, then $384 billion from 2019 to 2021, and $440 billion from the end of 2022 to 2025. The realized cap increases particularly quickly in the last year of each Bitcoin cycle, 2017 and 2021, which would suggest Bitcoin could experience a similar inflow of capital in 2025.

    Bitcoin (BTC) zoomed to a record level above $109,000 during the Asian trading hours on Monday ahead of Republican Donald Trump’s scheduled inauguration later in the day. The largest cryptocurrency touched $109,333 on Binance.

    Trump mentioned the asset’s record performance in a Sunday speech alongside gains in the broader U.S. stock market.

    “Since the election, the stock market has surged and small business optimism has soared a record 41 points to a 39-year high. Bitcoin has shattered one record high after another,” Trump said.

    BTC reversed losses from earlier in the day when it fell to nearly $100,000 from a high over $102,000 on Sunday as first lady Melania Trump issued a memecoin, drawing liquidity away from major assets.

    Trump has been vocal about his support for cryptocurrencies during his campaign. Promises like making the U.S. the “crypto capital of the planet” and creating a “strategic national bitcoin reserve” have fueled investor optimism.

    “Bitcoin reached $108K while other cryptocurrencies have rapidly pumped on the eve of the US presidential inauguration, with hopes that new policies and regulators will send the price of BTC much further this year as the US economy continues to show strength in the long term,” Ben El-Baz, Managing Director of HashKey Global, told CoinDesk in a Telegram message.

    “The forward momentum has been further accelerated by the launch of the TRUMP and MELANIA memecoins which have attracted more retail users, and hopes that Trump will prioritize and reaffirm his commitment to the crypto industry.”

    “Designating crypto as a national priority and launching TRUMP coin over the past few days have been strong, positive signals. As the main bellwether for the industry, Bitcoin’s surge was expected and is likely to continue through the week,” Jeff Mei, COO at BTSE, said in a Telegram message.

    Year-end bitcoin targets range from $185,000 to as high as $250,000, as CoinDesk previously reported.

    Meanwhile, bitcoin dominance has started to trend higher and is now approaching 60%, the highest level since Dec. 20. The spread between the two largest cryptocurrencies, bitcoin and ether (ETH), continues to widen, with a $1.75 trillion market cap differential — the largest difference ever recorded.

  • 19-year-old angry over Tik-Tok ban sets fire to local congressman’s office space


    On Sunday, January 19, 2025, City of Fond du Lac Police Department Officers apprehended a 19-year-old Menasha male suspected of setting fire to 525 N. Peters Avenue, in the City of Fond du Lac, which has office space leased to U.S. Congressman Glenn Grothman.

    Chief Aaron Goldstein stated, “We are relieved that no one was injured and the office was unoccupied at the time of the fire.  Acts of violence, in any form are not tolerated, and we remain committed to protecting the safety and well-being of our community.  I am thankful for the swift response of our Officers in helping knock down the fire and also locating the suspect of this arson.”

    At approximately 1:02 a.m., Fond du Lac Police Department Officers, along with the City of Fond du Lac Fire Rescue responded to a structure fire at 525 N. Peters Avenue.  Fond du Lac Police Department Officers arrived and used fire extinguishers to hold the fire in check until fire companies arrived and extinguished the fire.  Officers located a 19-year-old Menasha man near the strip mall.  The mane admitted to starting the fire in response to recent talks of a TikTok ban.

    The male is being held at the Fond du Lac County Jail and a charge of arson is being referred to the Fond du Lac County District Attorney’s Office.  More information is anticipated to be released if and when a criminal complaint is filed by the District Attorney’s Office.

    The building was unoccupied at the time and no injuries were reported.

    The investigation into this incident is at the preliminary stages and remains under active investigation by the City of Fond du Lac Police Department and the City of Fond du Lac Fire Rescue.
