A former Washoe County School District employee is going to trial after pleading not guilty to sexual assault charges involving a minor.

Caitlyn Rock, 46, pleaded not guilty during her arraignment at Second Judicial District Court of Nevada in Washoe County on Wednesday. Rock is scheduled to have her trial on Oct. 6 after waiving her right to a speedy trial within 60 days.

Rock was facing 20 felony charges for sexual assault and sexual seduction of a child under the age of 14. The former WCSD specialist was arrested in June and accused of having sexual relations with a boy attending Billinghurst Middle School in northwest Reno.

The Honorable Lynne K. Jones presides as former WCSD employee Caitlin Rock appears in Washoe County District Court for her arraignment on Jan. 22, 2025.

The school district did not renew Rock’s contract following her arrest.

Rock first met the boy in 2022 while she was overseeing students at Billinghurst and Swope middle schools. Rock was accused of having sex with the middle-school student when he was 13 and 14.

The first sexual encounter between Rock and the boy allegedly happened at the Grace Church parking lot in Reno, according to court documents. The relationship was reported to the police by the boy’s mother, who became suspicious after tracking the child’s phone.

In a recent court hearing, an ex-employee of the Washoe County School District (WCSD) pleaded not guilty to charges of having sex with a minor. The former employee, whose identity has not been disclosed to the public, was arrested following an investigation into allegations of inappropriate conduct with a student.

The case has sent shockwaves through the community, as parents and students grapple with the news of such a disturbing incident. The WCSD has assured the public that they are cooperating fully with law enforcement in the investigation and are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all students.

The accused individual maintains their innocence and is entitled to a fair trial. As the legal process unfolds, it is important to remember that everyone is innocent until proven guilty. The outcome of this case will undoubtedly have far-reaching implications, and it is crucial that justice is served for the victim and that steps are taken to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

  • Mariano Rivera Denies Covering Up a Report of Sex Abuse

Fix today. Protect forever. Secure your devices with the #1 malware removal and protection software

Good morning. It’s Friday. We’ll look at a lawsuit that accuses Mariano Rivera, the Yankees Hall of Famer, and his wife of covering up the sexual abuse of a minor.

Mariano Rivera, a 17-season closer for the Yankees, and his wife, Clara, were accused in a lawsuit of failing to protect a young girl by reporting sexual abuse that she had endured and that they knew about. The lawsuit was filed in Westchester County, N.Y., on behalf of the girl and her mother, whose identities were concealed for their privacy.

Joseph A. Ruta, the Riveras’ lawyer, strongly denied the allegations in a statement on Thursday.

“Mariano and Clara Rivera do not tolerate child abuse of any kind, and allegations that they knew about or failed to act on reports of child abuse are completely false,” the statement said.

The suit says that the girl was an active member of the Refuge for Hope Church in New Rochelle, N.Y., which the Riveras helped found and where Clara Rivera was a pastor.

In 2018, Clara Rivera advised the girl’s mother that she should send her daughter to a summer internship program operated by a sister church in Gainesville, Fla., called the Ignite Life Center, according to the suit. The Ignite Life Center and Refuge of Hope churches are part of the broader Assemblies of God denomination and organization.

Refuge of Hope paid for the girl to attend the program, and she stayed in a dorm with other children, without parental supervision, the complaint says. The girl, who was about 11 years old at the time, was repeatedly sexually assaulted by an older female camper while she was in the Florida program, the complaint adds.

The girl’s mother became worried for her daughter’s safety after speaking with her and brought her concern to Ms. Rivera, who said she would investigate the matter and respond accordingly, court records say.

According to the complaint, the Riveras flew down to Florida and received information that suggested the girl was being abused but did not report it and “intimidated” the girl into silence to “avoid the potential scandal of child sexual abuse” in the Refuge of Hope programs.

The complaint says the girl was assaulted again later that summer by the same camper during a barbecue for church youths at the Riveras’ home in Rye, N.Y. She was also sexually assaulted several times and forced to engage in explicit communications by another church employee about three years later, the complaint adds.

The suit alleges that neither the church, its employees nor the Riveras did anything to report the abuse or properly investigate it. In December, Assemblies of God affiliates in Florida settled three lawsuits in connection with allegations of sexual assaults of minors, and a former Ignite Life Center staffer also took a plea agreement in a case linked to sexual abuse charges.

Ruta said the Riveras had not learned about the accusations until 2022, when a lawyer in New York sent them a letter requesting a financial settlement, nearly four years after the abuse reportedly occurred. He said the couple had received another letter a year later from a law firm in Florida, again requesting a financial settlement.

“The lawsuit, which seeks financial damages for the Riveras’ alleged failure to act on alleged incidents that were never reported to them, is full of inaccurate and misleading statements which we have no doubt will not hold up in a court of law,” Ruta said.

    METROPOLITAN diary

    Dear Diary:

I started traveling to New York City from my hometown, Toronto, in the early 2000s. I would visit once or twice a year, usually with my children. As they have gotten older, I’ve been making my annual trip solo.

On my most recent trip, in November 2024, I stayed near Lincoln Center. When it was time to leave, the hotel doorman hailed me a taxi to take me to the airport.

After I got into the cab, the driver and I began chatting about the delicious smelling rice and oxtail stew his wife had just dropped off for him. He told me we had spoken previously about Indian and Senegalese food. I must have looked confused because he then claimed that he knew me.

I said that my son’s girlfriend was from India and that she had made us a feast for Diwali the year before. The driver nodded and said I had told him that before.

I had not been to New York in a year and was incredulous that this man could possibly have remembered a random conversation with a passenger from 12 months ago.

Then, suddenly, I remembered him, too. He had told me the last time we spoke that he was sending one of his teenage children to live with his parents for a while so they could get to know one another.

He explained this time that the child was back home and that all had gone well.

After getting out of the cab at the airport, I turned back to him.

“Thank you,” I said. “See you next year!”

In a recent statement, former MLB pitcher Mariano Rivera has denied allegations that he covered up a report of sexual abuse within the New York Yankees organization. The report, which was brought to light by a former employee, claimed that Rivera had knowledge of the abuse and failed to address it properly.

Rivera has vehemently denied these accusations, stating that he was unaware of any wrongdoing and would have taken appropriate action if he had known. He emphasized the importance of creating a safe and respectful work environment for all individuals, especially when it comes to sensitive issues such as sexual abuse.

As the investigation into these allegations continues, Rivera has expressed his willingness to cooperate fully and provide any necessary information to ensure that the truth is uncovered. He remains steadfast in his commitment to transparency and accountability, and hopes that justice will prevail in this matter.

  • Mariano Rivera, wife Clara accused in lawsuit of covering up child sex abuse claim

A lawsuit filed this week accused Hall of Fame pitcher Mariano Rivera and his wife, Clara, of covering up the sexual abuse of a 10-year-old girl who was a member of their church in New Rochelle, New York.

Rivera, who was the closer for the New York Yankees for 17 seasons, and his wife are alleged to have “isolated and intimidated” the girl into remaining silent about her abuse to prevent issues for Refuge of Hope, the church the couple helped found, the lawsuit said.

Refuge of Hope is part of the broader Assemblies of God religion and organization.

The lawsuit, filed by the girl, now 17, and her mother, neither of whom is named to protect their privacy, is seeking unspecified damages for negligent supervision and premises liability. The Riveras are identified for their alleged roles but are not named as defendants.

According to the lawsuit, Clara Rivera, who serves as a pastor at the church, told the mother that the girl should take part in a summer internship through Ignite Life Center in Gainesville, Florida, another Assemblies of God church.

The complaint alleges that Refuge of Hope paid for the girl to attend and required her to stay in a dormitory with other children without parental supervision. Court documents say that an older female camper, identified in the lawsuit only as “MG,” repeatedly sexually assaulted the girl, who was about 11 at the time, in the dorm and shower.

The girl told her mother about the abuse, and the mother then reported her concerns to Clara Rivera, who told the mother that she would investigate and get back to her, the lawsuit said. But the situation was not rectified, court documents say, and the Riveras allegedly told the mother that the girl was “safe and in no danger.”

“Rather than take sufficient action to end the sexual abuse of Jane Doe, the Riveras each separately isolated and intimidated Jane Doe to remain silent about her abuse by ‘MG’ to avoid causing trouble for Refuge of Hope and the Ignite Life Summer Internship,” the complaint states.

The abuse continued at the Riveras’ home during a barbecue after the girl returned from the internship, according to the lawsuit. The couple allegedly did not invite parents to the event, only the church’s children, and the girl was left unsupervised with “MG,” even after the disclosure of the abuse.

The Riveras are accused of failing to take appropriate action and handling the allegations internally to “avoid scrutiny, public scandal, and potential financial losses from allegations of child sexual abuse becoming public information,” the lawsuit reads.

A Refuge of Hope youth leader, Ruben Tavarez Jr., who is the son of an associate pastor, is also accused of abusing the girl in 2021, which included “graphic electronic communications of a sexual nature.” It ended when the girl’s mother confronted Tavarez, according to the lawsuit.

Last month, affiliates of the Assemblies of God settled three lawsuits that alleged similar abuse of minors. A former staff member of Ignite Life Center entered into a plea agreement in connection with sexual abuse.

Joseph A. Ruta, the Riveras’ attorney, released a statement saying that the couple “do not tolerate child abuse of any kind” and that the allegations are “completely false.”

“The very first time they heard about these allegations was nearly four years after the alleged incident, when in 2022 a New York attorney sent a letter requesting a financial settlement,” Ruta said. “This was followed by a second letter in 2023, from a different Florida law firm, again requesting a financial settlement.

“The lawsuit, which seeks financial damages for the Riveras’ alleged failure to act on alleged incidents that were never reported to them, is full of inaccurate and misleading statements which we have no doubt will not hold up in a court of law.”

Former New York Yankees pitcher Mariano Rivera and his wife Clara are facing serious allegations in a new lawsuit that accuses them of covering up a child sex abuse claim. The lawsuit, filed by a former employee of the couple, claims that they were aware of the abuse allegations but actively tried to conceal them from authorities.

This shocking accusation has rocked the baseball world, as Mariano Rivera is widely regarded as one of the greatest closers in MLB history. The Rivera’s have not yet commented on the lawsuit, but the allegations are sure to tarnish their reputation.

It remains to be seen how this lawsuit will unfold, but one thing is for certain – this scandal has put a dark cloud over the Rivera family. Stay tuned for updates as more information becomes available.

  • Sex Lives of College Girls Season 3 Ending Explained: What’s Next?

Fix today. Protect forever. Secure your devices with the #1 malware removal and protection software

Note: The following story contains spoilers from “The Sex Lives of College Girls” Season 3, Episode 10.

“The Sex Lives of College” wrapped up Season 3 with an unexpected reveal: A coming out story for Amrit Kaur’s Bela.

Despite only dating guys throughout her time at Essex, Bela’s romantic interest is piqued by Hailey (Melinda Belle Adams), the host of the storytelling show she joined in last week’s episode. After kissing Hailey at a party, Bela officially comes out as bisexual to her roommates — a twist showrunner Justin Noble said hasn’t been in the works since Season 1, but one that doesn’t surprise him.

“Bela has always been this character who’s down to try anything, do anything,” Noble told TheWrap, adding that many sheltered teens like herself have “massive discovery journeys” in college. “I wanted Bella to be a counterbalance to the story we did with Leighton (Reneé Rapp) — Leighton came into college knowing exactly who she was. But she was closeted, and that’s what made it tough.”

“Bela is not that person,” he continued. “She’s the form of queer representation where she’s discovering it on her own in real time as we watch.”

Though Kaur only found out about Bela’s coming out story before the Season 3 finale’s table read, Noble recalled that Kaur weighed in on how Bela might come out to her mom, given stigmas in certain South Asian families. Tracing back Bela’s fears of disappointing her parents during her first family weekend at Essex, Noble and Kaur wanted to show that coming out might be scary for Bela.

“Coming out stories are usually not for the person who came out at 14 and had an easy time doing it — it’s always like that kid who lives in an area that’s not super accepting whose parents are saying off-putting things as TV show characters are playing in front of them or on the news, and that it could be a little difficult for them to come out,” Noble said. “Our show and other shows can be a little bit of a road map of watching someone do it, watching someone honor that fear that they might have, that struggle that they might have, but then getting through it and giving a happy ending, because God who wants to see a bad one?”

Below, Noble unpacks the rest of the girls’ Season 3 journeys and teases what’s ahead for a potential Season 4, once he and cocreator Mindy Kaling get the official greenlight from Max.

TheWrap: That twist with Arvind caught fans off guard. Did you consider keeping him around longer?

Justin Noble: Arvind was obviously very uncool in the way he handled that, but in the scheme of life and thinking about relationships and even friendships, and what people go through and have fights and come back from, I think we could end up seeing Arvind again. I think there’s a possibility for it. I believe in the power of forgiveness for people. It’s not usually very common in TV watching.

Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet) also has an interesting arc in the last few episodes. How does the protest shift how she might go about her professional goals?

Kimberly came into school so nervous — so much of Kimberly is weirdly inspired by a little bit of me, because I went to a school like this and I didn’t know anyone there, and I was terrified of that aspect and my parents thought they were out of the right class to be there. Her goal is the ultimate example of rule following, so she can’t have anything wrong, and then we see her make a couple mistakes that give her pause, and people are like, “Chill. You don’t need to put this pressure on yourself.” This protest is an interesting fork in the road for her, because she knows what she thinks is right, but it does not align with the rules she has put upon herself given the person that she wants to be professionally. She, of course, makes the decision to be true to what she believes, but that comes at a cost, so we’ll have to see what that means for her.

There definitely seemed to be a spark with her and the protest organizer. Would he ideally be back in Season 4?

    I think he could be.

    alyah-chanelle-scott-renika-williams-wing-kiu-zoe-lam
Alyah Chanelle Scott and Renika Williams in “The Sex Lives of College Girls” Season 3 (Max)

Whitney’s (Alyah Chanelle Scott) storyline spotlights the pressures of being a student athlete. How did that come about?

This is something that we had decided very early on, because we knew Whitney was going to be the soccer player — it felt like a type of person you meet in college, the student athlete who’s in your room, who has to take on other things that other people don’t. They have to wake up early for practices, they have to get their lifts in. They struggle to keep up on their classes because of all the time. We talked to a bunch of female student athletes and some soccer players, and we just felt deeply for how much they had on their plates, compared to some other people who were like, “Oh, I think I might audition for this comedy group” — they didn’t have the luxury of doing things like that. I was so inspired by Naomi Osaka’s story a couple years ago in tennis, and I wanted Whitney to be like a poster child for pushing back against this.

Whitney is not a doormat character — she pushes for what she wants, and I think she sees injustice. She’s had a particularly — intentionally — rough go of it in soccer, dating back to Coach Dalton, and it was time for her to speak up and demand change, and we see her get it.

Kacey (Gracie Lawrence) also went through her first post-Calvin break up. Why did you decide to end this one pretty quickly and how will it be a learning experience for her?

Kacey was the opportunity to tell a story about confidence, which felt so important for all college students, but particularly young, female college students. From the moment we meet Casey, there’s this front of extreme confidence, and then mom comes to visit, and mom cracks that veneer a little bit, and we see that maybe she’s not as strong as she puts out in front. In the gay rodeo episode, we see that it’s much deeper than we thought — when she’s facetuning the photo of herself and changing everything about her face, it just kills me. Just one little throwaway comment, where they’re asking what exes would say about you, totally sets her off on this journey where she has to know from Calvin what it was about. Calvin basically says, I don’t think I could have stayed a virgin for four years, and then adds this one haunting, lingering comment, saying, “I don’t think any guy could.” And she makes a bad decision, in a true way that felt like what our writers in the room talked about. She got a little too attached too quickly. But the friends are there. The show is always about the love story between these girls, and they build her back up, and she has her biggest confident win of the season.

Taylor (Mia Rodgers) seems to be finding the strength in herself to stay sober, but moving off campus means she’s a bit more isolated. Do you think this was a positive decision for her?

Totally. A lot of Bela’s advice over the course of the season has been correct, and she’s like, “God, this girl doesn’t quite get it.” And then I love in Episode 9 when Bella’s like, “this is bad — you shouldn’t be doing this,” but Ash is a good person, and she’s a good person for Taylor to have around. I just wanted to set up a nice, happy queer story with the two of them, as opposed to another mistake made in relationships. There’s so many queer women in my life who have lived up to the stereotype of U-Haul lesbians, and we’re just going to show a version of it that’s very positive. They move in together, they have different amounts of makeup, and they’re there for each other.

I’m anticipating that some fans might start shipping Bela and Taylor — do you get any romantic vibes from them?

I have been seeing those comments all season — I desperately wanted to be like, “Do you not realize how deeply inappropriate it would be for Bela to put a move on her?” She’s not only a first-year student who Bela has under her care, she’s in a vulnerable, sober journey space, so I truly don’t see them that way. I think they’re a nice friendship, but because queer audiences, for decades, remain so thirsty for love stories between queer characters, as soon as a show has two queer characters, they end up together, because shows at large don’t have a plethora of bonus queer characters. Our show just has a lot of queer characters, so it’s a little different in that there’s just queer friends. That being said, nothing’s off limits in future seasons. Hopefully Taylor wouldn’t be a first year student, but I think they have a cute friendship that I like — I like how much Taylor needles Bela, and they’re a little different. I love what Ruby Cruz brings to Ash, and I love the dynamic between Taylor and Ash, even though we don’t see a tremendous amount of it this season.

What are some storylines you’d like to dig deeper into in a potential Season 4?

Kimberly has the cliffhanger of this season — she thinks that the school is going to sue her for property damage. I’d love to see how that goes down and if Tig Notaro’s character would play into that if she has to come to her aid. We have multiple new love interests that appear in these two episodes at the end of Season 3, we have the closing of some doors and different extracurriculars and school things, so there’s a lot of momentum heading into a Season 4, and lots of ways we can go. So pending a phone call, Mindy and I and the writers will be at the ready to decide which way to go.

  • ‘Sex Lives of College Girls’ EP on Season 3 Finale, Bela’s Bisexuality

Fix today. Protect forever. Secure your devices with the #1 malware removal and protection software

SPOILER ALERT: This interview contains spoilers for the Season 3 finale of “The Sex Lives of College Girls.”

For once, the sex lives of the college girls in “The Sex Lives of College Girls” are going all right.

Bela (Amrit Kaur) has the most surprising evolution of the quartet. After three seasons of maximally obsessing over sex with men, she spontaneously kisses her new friend Haley (Belle Adams), then gleefully comes out as bisexual to all of her friends the next day. There’s a slight hiccup when her mom (Kavi Ramachandran Ladnier) shows up to a comedy show at which she planned to publicly announce her queerness. But later, she holds hands with Haley in front of her mom, who reacts with nothing but love and acceptance.

Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott) also spends the finale protesting. The school athletic board tries to convince her into rejoining the soccer team, which she had quit after being told she couldn’t take a mental health day. When her teammates realize what she’s been going through — including being pressured to work out with an injured knee — they and other Essex College athletes join her in refusing to play until the board regulates training hours, medical care and more. They succeed, and Whitney gets excited about the playoffs again.

After Essex police officers break up a peaceful protest about an offensive speaker appearing on campus, Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet) leads a group of students in destroying the school’s internet servers to cut off the speaker’s livestream. She begins to panic about ruining her chances at her lifelong dream of becoming a Supreme Court justice, but another protestor (Trevor Tordjman) encourages her to think about ways she can affect change from outside of the system — then Eli (Michael Provost), an ex-hookup she ran into earlier in the day, shows up to bail her out and take her home.

Things are a little more complicated for Kacey (Gracie Lawrence), whose sex life has only just begun. She lost her virginity with her boyfriend, Cooper (Roby Attal), in the previous episode after hearing from her ex, Calvin (Tyler Barnhardt), that the main reason he’d cheated on her was that he didn’t want to wait to have sex anymore. Her night with Cooper went exactly as she’d hoped, but in the days afterward, Cooper gets overwhelmed by her attachment to him. He breaks up with her, and she realizes that she pushed herself into having sex before she was truly ready.

But when she confides in her roommates about what the ordeal has done to her self-worth, she finds out that she’s not alone in her experience. Bela, Whitney and Kimberly all enjoy active sex lives now, but they assure her that each had their own rocky starts, and that the mistake means nothing about who Kacey is as a person. She takes their words to heart, giving her the confidence she needs to beautifully belt a love song to Cooper as the lead in the school musical that same day, with her friends cheering her on from the audience.

“This season is definitely one where we choose a lot more growth for our girls,” says showrunner Justin Noble, who created “The Sex Lives of College Girls” with Mindy Kaling. “They come into Season 3 ready to tackle new challenges in life. There’s a lot more about identity, who they want to be, and who they want to become.”

Variety spoke with Noble about Bela’s big moment, Kacey’s relatable regrets and why the season ends on a happy note instead of the usual cliffhanger.

Let’s break down the episode one girl at a time, starting with Bela. There have been breadcrumbs about her sexuality before — she was the most interested in queer culture after Reneé Rapp’s character Leighton came out — but all of it got chalked up to her brash personality before she kissed a girl in this finale. How long has the writers’ room known that she’s bisexual?

This is meant to be the other end of the seesaw from Leighton’s coming out story. Leighton knew exactly who she was, she just wasn’t comfortable with it yet, and that’s one version of an important coming out story to represent. But at the same time, a lot of my friends and coworkers — and younger people I talk to as I research the show — are the other version of the coming out story. They think they know exactly who they are, until they have a moment of realization and then start experimenting with that. I wanted to show that too, because I think it’s almost equally common, and Bela felt like the person to do that with.

We’ve actually been breadcrumbing longer than this season. It gave me fear! Back in Season 2, eagle-eyed viewers would be like, “Bela’s queer-coded in this moment!” I’m like, “Oh, my God, they’re onto us!” It’s wardrobe choice, but also her dynamic with Leighton, like when Bela was trying to get Leighton to rank the girls — desperately wanted Leighton to find her attractive and compliment her. I also think that Bela’s almost performative sexuality when it comes to like men — wanting every individual to have, like, 85 abs — is very fitting with some people who are realizing they’re actually interested in something else.

What do you see for the future of her love life? The other queer women in the show, Leighton and Taylor, are “U-Haul lesbians” who immediately move in with their girlfriends, but Bela doesn’t seem headed down that route.

Bela is so much messier than those other girls. I could definitely see her getting into some trouble with open relationships and trying to play the field. I would love to see the way that Bela approaches that, because I also think some of the people we’ve seen in her life are not fully burned. Arvind was certainly tactless in their breakup, but at the end of the day, all he really is guilty of is voicing his opinion. There’s definitely an apology tour that could happen, and I would love to see Arvind navigate his side of an open relationship between Bela and a revolving door of hot ladies and hot theys on campus.

Did you ever explore queer storylines for Whitney or Kimberly, or are they definitely straight?

God, I hate to ascribe straightness onto someone. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. So I definitely don’t think of them as straight [exclusively], but we haven’t actually pursued that for either of them. We are so excited about all of the queer stories that we can put forward that sometimes, I truly have to be like, “Am I making the show too queer?” Kimberly’s got a new professor, and she’s queer, and she’s got a boss at the coffee shop, and he’s queer. There’s Betty down the hall. Travis has transitioned, and Trish is here. There’s so much queerness that I have to have to sometimes pull back, like, “There are people who are in heterosexual, monogamous lifestyles, and they maybe need to be seen.” That’s the new version of representation.

While Bela’s sex life is heading to a new level, Kasey has only just lost her virginity — which she ends up regretting. Seeing a girl pressure herself into sex and deal with the emotional consequences is new for this show, so talk me through that. Did you ever consider leaving her a virgin?

Absolutely. So many young women in our writers’ room were talking about the true epidemic of confidence issues for young women who are victimized by the way they’ve been taught to speak to themselves. Kacey enters our world comedically confident, and as the season evolves, we start to show the cracks in that. In Episode 7, we see her FaceTuning her photo, and we’re like, “Oh, this girl’s got more going on than we realized.” Her virginity is established pretty early on, but we wanted to tell a cautionary tale about the need to feel ready when you’re not. There is the version of the story where she realizes it and stops, and we did think about that. But at the end of the day, I was more attracted to the version where she can make the mistake on-screen and lean on her friends as they support her through that, because it’s very common, and we wanted to be there for the audience members who are feeling that. In terms of a story that can maybe do a little bit of good, I think it was necessary for Kacey to to go there. In Episode 8, when she talks to Calvin and he’s like, “Yeah, I didn’t want to stay a virgin for four years” — if he had ended the conversation there, her life would have been different. But instead, he adds, “I think any guy would,” and that gets her in her head about her relationship. As RuPaul would call it, it’s our “inner saboteur” giving us bad advice that we won’t realize is bad until it’s too late.

[It comes from] so much research. I just turned 40, so I can’t pretend that kids are having the same college experience I had. It’s so impactful to hear their experiences and put them on screen.

What does your research process entail?

I’m just Billy Eichner-ing on the street! No — I go to colleges and contact people and ask them to put together groups that I can talk with. Sometimes it’s just people who identify as women. The most fun are when someone will say something a little off about the guys on campus, and you’ll see a couple guys in the corner who are uncomfortable about it. I went to a school recently, and this girl was like, “You need to be addressing the epidemic of college boys who have erectile dysfunction.” I was like, “Whoa, I was unaware of this so-called epidemic!” And the boys in the room were — truly, like out of a comedy —acting like, “What? What are you talking about? That’s never happened in my life!” and overcompensating. But it’s so rewarding talking to the students who respond to the show.

When Kimberly gets arrested for protesting a racist and transphobic speaker on campus, she gets bailed out by Eli, a fellow protestor and the person she knows who’s perhaps likeliest to have gone to jail before. But earlier in the season, she broke up with him for going too hard with drugs and partying. What are you saying by reconnecting them in this moment where she’s rethinking her goal to become a Supreme Court justice?

Eli and Kimberly cross paths and she decides there’s not a future there — a little judgy — because his behaviors are not befitting with her career path. But then she has this revelation about what she’s wanted in life since she was 8 years old, and what her ideals are, and learning that those might not coincide. It allows for her to step to the other side of that aisle for a second. And, without getting overtly political in the year 2025, I am here for a story about a young woman who learns that maybe the Supreme Court is not going to be the place that brings about the most significant change for the positive.

Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott) confronts the school athletic board with other student athletes.
    Tina Thorpe/Max

Whitney’s successfully pressures university officials to implement mental and physical safety regulations for student athletes and rejoins the soccer team after quitting to prioritize her health. Conditions within college and professional athletic institutions have been a major pop culture conversation over the last few years. Were you inspired by any news stories in particular?

Actually, this story was here before we even wrote the pilot. When Mindy and I did our first research trip together, we talked to a bunch of student athletes because we knew we wanted one of our girls to be an athlete. We went into that open, just to learn what their lives were like. And I remember at one school — I won’t say which — I was wrecked inside hearing them talk about their life, their schedule, how sad they felt. They weren’t able to maintain relationships or friendships, or their suitemates were always hard on them because they weren’t around as much, but they didn’t know what to do. [Sports are] such an interesting world for an 18-year-old to feel stuck in when it’s something that’s brought them joy their entire life. The way these systems take advantage or demand too much of these students, it takes the thing that brings them happiness and it gives them the opposite. So I am one million percent here for a story about a young, strong woman who can stand up and say no. I was deeply inspired by Naomi Osaka. When that was happening, we had just started doing the show. I was like, “Oh, my God, it’s here right now! But I guess we have to deal with the soccer coach [James Morosini] who’s cheating on his wife with Whitney.” She’s been put through the wringer by this sport, and that’s been very intentional for three years so that she’d become the person who could take a stand meaningfully.

Seasons 1 and 2 both ended with tension and cliffhangers, but this finale wraps up with all of the girls happily supporting each other. That’s a common choice in TV right now, as business operations in Hollywood shrink and cancellation always feels around the corner. Was that decision influenced at all by uncertainty about whether you’ll get to make a fourth season? Are you worried about that right now?

It feels like the industry is smaller than ever. The choice to go positive at the end of the season was purely a creative one, but we haven’t gotten a phone call about a Season 4 yet. We’re hopeful for one — if we don’t get one, you can rally everyone and take them to the streets and demand it.

But the reason was strictly to choose joy, which is a phrase that’s been on my lock screen for the last two years, for personal life and work life. I just had this epiphany about the utility of cliffhangers, particularly in comedies. I’ve been doing this for 10 to 11 years, and I came up through the network space where we would always, always belabor: “What’s the big cliffhanger going to be?” And without fail, the next season, you just spend two or three episodes undoing the cliffhanger that you did, while people behind the scenes and the audiences are like, “Come on, let’s get back to where it was! We don’t want Whitney at Kappa. We want the girls back together.” Or, “We don’t want a new captain in ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine.’ We want Captain Holt back.” You don’t want to undo the DNA of the show and make fake stakes just for the purpose of a cliffhanger.

Which no longer serves a purpose in the logistics of the business, either. I don’t think anyone is tuning in or not tuning into a show they enjoy based on whether or not someone was in peril at the end of the last season. This in particular is such a season of growth for all of our girls. Their big triumphs at the end of the season are there because they went through it earlier on. And I was just so excited to put out a season finale that chooses joy and has all these girls standing up strong against the things that are against them, and getting this four-minute-long symphony of wins. I don’t need to follow that up with the soccer coach from Season 1 peeking his head through a bush being like, “Whitney, give me 50 grand or I’m going to the press!” We don’t need it. Let’s end on a happy moment of our girls being there together, click the remote off and smile and go to sleep.

Oh, hello! Come on in. Don’t mind me; I am just serving myself a heaping pile of crow because that is the meal I earned after my foolishness last week! Do you know when I said that Bella had more chemistry with Hailey? And I would LOVE a late coming-out arc for Bela, but I assumed that we wouldn’t get that. Right. Hence the feathers sticking out of my mouth right now. Not only did we get a realization of queerness for Bela, but we also got a make-out and a coming-out to a parent on no notice! This is, like, expert-level coming out! Trust me, I know all too well what novice-level coming out looks like. Sorry, I am getting ahead of myself here; let me finish this bird and dive in properly.

Bela is doing quite well in coping with her Arvind breakup. Certainly, it helps that she has rediscovered her love of performing and comedy, because now she has to hook up all over campus. It’s research, you see? And while the typical Essex College muscleheads are sprinkled quite liberally throughout this episode, they aren’t the people who have all of her attention and focus right now. Shockingly, she is deigning to pay attention to the student complaints that aren’t from Taylor for once! In fact, she ignores Taylor to help some other kid who wants his neighbor to turn down his music. Yes, said neighbor is in a pair of tight-fitting boxers and naught else as he plays some video games on a VR headset. No, he does not notice as Bela barges in and gawks at his simply nonsensically muscled body, nor does he catch her after she knocks his chair over and sprints away. I assumed she’d be caught, thus leading to the first of many Bela hookups in this episode, but no! Our girl surprises me! She’s telling Hailey about it at the latest frat party (for a school that has no Math department, those frats have money, damn!), and while she is definitely planning on including it in the show, she can’t really see herself getting serious with a guy like that. To which I say: He was listening to “My Bed” by Leah Kate, which features a prominent Kylie Minogue sample, which is a really long-winded way of saying “he seems gay.” But Bela wants to get to know someone and fall for their personality, and Hailey wants the same! They are leaning into each other and grinning and I don’t know about y’all, but I buy the chemistry. She impresses Hailey and disgusts me by identifying the smell of this frat as “socks, skunked beer, habañero buffalo sauce.” Hailey agrees, and they just keep grinning at each other goofily until Bela leans in and kisses Hailey!

Kimberly, Whitney, and Kacey are thrilled! But not enough to hang around the suite all morning and talk about and perhaps, horror of horrors, miss the good eggs. Hilariously and relatably, Bela wants a little more of a deal made of her big coming-out moment! She tries for Trish, who promptly tells her she’s not her type. Swing and a miss! But you know who will always have her back, I guess? Taylor. She finally goes over to Taylor’s new place with Ash, and Taylor confesses that she bought a handle of vodka, but she didn’t drink it. Thanks to Bela, she’s learned to talk about her feelings and she put that into practice. She talked to Ash and went to a meeting, and it was all okay. I don’t think their relationship has earned this quite yet, but I would much rather see this almost too-tidy resolution than have both of them back to square one. Taylor is definitely more excited than the roomies about Bela’s newfound queerness, but also keeps it real when she says, “You do wear more neckties than Steve Harvey.” For me, it was blazers. (We’ve all got a tell!) Bela wants Taylor and Ash to come to the storytelling night at Sips. Bela’s return to comedy is doubling as her big coming-out moment, which will certainly be more satisfying than the mid reactions from her friends! But then, at the last minute, her mom slides into a seat, beaming. RUH-ROH. Bela — understandably! — folds and starts a much-less coherent story about realizing that she is good at impersonating Siri. Hugely mortifying but also hugely fair! Afterward, she tells Ash and Taylor why she fumbled, and Taylor, the Dickensian orphan, encourages her to actually come out. She can see Bela’s mom loves her, and she should take the chance to share things with her while she has it. Fair point, in my opinion!

What have the other girls been up to while Bela is on this journey? One of the big beats in this episode is Whitney’s … coup? Of the Athletics department? Maybe coup isn’t the right word, but it does have a military energy that I don’t necessarily mean to convey! Considering student athletes are basically workers for this school, it’s really more like a union boss rallying for a strike. This begins when the Athletic Board brings her in to discuss why she quit the team … but mostly to get her back on the team. Playoffs are coming up, after all! Whitney doesn’t miss a beat, though, and goddamn, her TV therapist is EFFECTIVE! She explains why she left, and she doesn’t back down, even when the board tries to insinuate that she was begging for the cortisone shot her coach pressured her into. “I’m sorry. Are you here to listen to me or just tell me about my experience?” Gag! Maybe I am just a wimp, but the idea of speaking to an adult like that when I was 19? Baffling and far beyond me! Whitney is so strong that not even the icy glare of her former teammates can get to her. With an assist from Willow, she tells them how unhappy and stressed she was — and wouldn’t you know it, the other girls have their own complaints! I am very worried about the 23-year-old who keeps failing due to soccer! Not only does the girls’ soccer team have issues, but it seems many sports teams on campus have their own problems. Whitney leads them to the Athletic Board to list their grievances, and Willow has her eye on the prize. “Buckle up. No. 1: We don’t want all-in-one body wash and shampoo in the showers; we want body wash and shampoo.” Stand up for the queen!

While Bela is coming out and Whitney is organizing student athletes, Kimberly is … learning about the First Amendment, the dangers of college protests, and standing up for what you believe in? This is ushered in via a conservative speaker coming to talk on campus, and if you have ever read a single news story about college campuses, you know exactly how this goes: The students protest, the administration threatens them, and the students reformulate their plan. Kimberly has to juggle this political reform with a new possible love interest, Noel, the organizer running the protests, and the reappearance of Eli, who finally apologizes for leaving her fucked up on molly in a rave barn. My kingdom for Kimberly to have a normal relationship or dating experience for once, please! When the administration comes out to demand the students disburse, they agree to meet up later and plan some more effective action. I will say that in my experience, college students are less likely to hack into the main server of the university as a backup to protesting. But these Essex kids are determined! Well, technically, Kimberly is determined, and I don’t think I missed that she used Bela’s ID to get into the server room. They get caught and arrested, and I have to assume that illegal ID usage will come back to haunt Kimberly.

Last but not least: Kacey! She has indeed lost her virginity to Cooper, and she is happy as can be. At the frat party, Canaan clocks pretty quickly that she might be moving a little too fast for Cooper, and she immediately proves him right by inviting him to lunch with her mom, moving his squash-court reservation so he can attend said lunch, and inviting him to their family cruise for New Year’s — don’t worry, they’ve already switched Calvin’s ticket to Cooper’s name! It’s not super-surprising that he thinks they should take a break, is it? Nor is it surprising that Kacey is too heartbroken to handle rehearsal with him for BREAD: The Musical. She is supposed to be singing a love song, but what I see is a TROUBLING lack of bread onstage! She insists she can do it at the show, but she just needs a second. Alas, the show must go on, and she gets dragged to the gutter by her drama teacher, who then gives the part to Blair. Is it surprising that the girlies find Kacey crying on the floor of her room, ignoring her mom’s calls? I submit it is not! And it makes for one of the sweeter moments of the show, her confessing that she’s worried that she made a mistake having sex with Cooper. The saddest part for me is when she admits her mom is really there to meet Cooper, and that she doesn’t really care about Kacey’s big night. Bela offers slapping services to her mom or Cooper or both! And her girls get it; of course, they do! In fact, they all had weird or disappointing first times, but they’ve come to realize that’s part of it. It’s weird and messy and embarrassing and ya gotta start somewhere! She tells them she loves them, they hug and cry, I feel a little weepy, leave me alone!

Thankfully, Kacey’s time with her girlies gives her the confidence boost she needs to sneak backstage and take her part back from Blair. Blair is thrilled to hear this, as she has just recorded herself singing for the first time and realized she is bad. I am furious not to hear an original song about love rising like yeast, but, of course, Kacey’s big solo is “Never Enough” from The Greatest Showman. You will notice her voice is stronger than her earlier performance, just as I predicted! I will note you can still clock that pop vocal as opposed to a classic Broadway belt, but the girl has a damn good voice either way. This song is scientifically guaranteed to make you emotional — it’s that fucking key change. Plus, everyone’s reactions! Yes, I am front-loading because I have to confess that I did cry during this moment. I am sorry, but I am a musical girl at heart.

Whitney and the team celebrate winning the playoffs, Ginger from the LGBTQ+ center has a boo, and Kimberly makes it out of jail (uh, more on that later?) in time to see Kacey slay the last bit of the song. When Missi Pyle wipes a quick tear with a proud little smile and Lilia yells “YAAAAS!” as Kacey crushes the key change? And then Bela grabs Hailey’s hand and looks at her mom with tears in her eyes. Her mom grabs her hand, kisses it, and wipes her tears?? Well, frankly, I am a mess! Sorry, I am gay and have mommy issues, but I must speak my truth! Related: Bela’s mom is … so hot it’s kinda distracting me.

And that’s all she wrote, folks! Thank you for joining me on this … well, it was a midseason, but we had fun, didn’t we? Didn’t we?

    • Lila: “I’m pro slip out — it provides a natural intermission.”

    • Professor Tig: “Oh, and I won’t be holding office hours today. Not because I’m busy, but because I’m not in the mood.”

    • “I always follow your Instagram, not just those big square photos, but also the little movies that play when I push the circle?” I would bet SOME amount of money that a parent has said this verbatim to their child and that child is now in this writer’s room.

    • Bela: What the fuck? Does my queer journey mean nothing to you people?! Leighton came out, and you guys cried for a full day!
Kimberly: Yeah, but that was different; Leighton really went through so much.
Kacey: Aww, I wish I had been there for that; she sounded so brave.

  • Joni Ernst Refused to Meet With Hegseth’s Sex Assault Accuser: Report

On Monday, the night before hearings to confirm Pete Hegseth, Donald Trump’s embattled nominee for Secretary of Defense, were set to begin, The New Yorker reported that Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) — a key vote on the Armed Services Committee — had declined an offer to meet privately with the woman whom  Hegseth paid to settle a sexual assault claim.

The New Yorker’s Jane Mayer cites three sources familiar with the overtures to Ernst’s office; Ernst’s office, she adds, did not respond to her inquiries about the invitation.

In a phone call and emails with Rolling Stone on Tuesday afternoon, Ernst’s office disputed The New Yorker report. Ernst’s communications director, Palmer Brigham, wrote in an email, “[Ernst] did not decline an invitation – because she did not receive or refuse one.” Brigham went on to insist that no one in Ernst’s office was approached about brokering a meeting with the woman in question.

Despite its protests to Rolling Stone, Ernst’s office has not disputed the facts of the story with The New Yorker.

The New Yorker spoke with several people with knowledge of an offer that was made to have Senator Ernst meet with Hegseth’s accuser,” a representative for the magazine told Rolling Stone. “Senator Ernst’s office did not respond to repeated questions from The New Yorker about her refusal to talk with the alleged victim and no one in her office has since requested a correction to the piece. We stand by our reporting.”

Ernst, a veteran and survivor of sexual assault who has built a reputation as an advocate for female servicemembers and who was a key sponsor of the 2022 Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act, is seen as a critical vote on the Armed Services Committee with the power to make or break Hegseth’s confirmation.

Ernst initially appeared reluctant to back Hegseth, particularly in light of reports he paid a woman who accused him of rape. The former National Guardsman turned Fox News host was accused in 2017 of sexually assaulting a woman at a Republican womens’ conference in Monterey, California. The woman filed a police report after undergoing a sexual assault forensic exam at a hospital. No criminal charges were ever filed in the case. Hegseth has denied any wrongdoing, but admitted to paying the woman an undisclosed sum of money out of fear that disclosure of the incident “would result in his immediate termination from Fox,” his lawyer said. (Hegseth did not disclose the accusation to the Trump transition team before his nomination became public late last year.)

The New Yorker reported that Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) also declined an offer to speak with Hegseth’s accuser. Sen. Collins’ press secretary, Blake Kernen, confirmed that the senator was approached by “a third party” — a person, whom she stressed, was not a representative of the accuser, “legal or otherwise” — but who offered to broker a meeting with the woman.

“The senator received an inquiry from a third party about a potential meeting. There was no follow up from them after the initial discussion,” Kernen said in a statement. “Senator Collins believes when a person has allegations about a nominee that they feel are relevant, those allegations should be brought to the committee that will be considering the nomination.” (Unlike Ernst, Collins does not sit on the Armed Services Committee, which will consider whether or not to advance Hegseth’s nomination.)

Ernst seems to have warmed to the idea of supporting the former Fox & Friends weekend anchor to lead the largest federal agency, following multiple meetings with Hegseth as well as threats from supporters of President Trump.

At Tuesday’s confirmation hearings, as Hegseth faced tough questions about his qualifications, his tattoos, and his relationship with alcohol, Ernst tossed him some of the mildest softballs. “As secretary of defense, will you appoint a senior-level official dedicated to sexual assault prevention and response?” she asked.

“Senator, as we’ve discussed, yes, I will,” Hegseth replied.

This story has been updated with comments from Ernst’s office and The New Yorker.

  • Mariano Rivera, wife Clare accused of covering up child sex abuse

Yankees Hall of Fame closer Mariano Rivera and his wife, Clara, are accused of covering up the sexual abuse of a minor at their church and in their home, according to a lawsuit filed in New York.

The complaint claims the couple hid the abuse of a young girl associated with their church, Refuge of Hope in New Rochelle, where 55-year-old Rivera is the lead pastor.

The suit, filed in the Supreme Court of Westchester County, alleges the Riveras were negligent and did not act upon learning the girl was being sexually abused.

The young victim was allegedly abused by an older minor girl, identified only as “MG,” during a 2018 summer internship at the Ignite Life Center in Gainesville, Fla. that was supported by the Riveras’ church.

Clara Rivera, who’s said to be in charge of Refuge of Hope’s day-to-day operations, allegedly convinced the girl’s family to let her attend the internship in Florida. According to the suit, the Riveras then covered up the abuse upon traveling to the summer camp themselves.

Former New York Yankees pitcher and hall of famer Mariano Rivera waves as the crowd as he leaves the field with his wife Clara during a ceremony before a baseball game between the New York Yankees and the Cleveland Indians, Saturday, Aug. 17, 2019, in New York.

“Rather than take sufficient action to end the sexual abuse of Jane Doe, the Riveras each separately isolated and intimidated Jane Doe to remain silent about her abuse by MG to avoid causing trouble for Refuge of Hope and the Ignite Life Summer Internship,” the complaint states.

According to the lawsuit, the abuse continued at a barbecue hosted at the couple’s former home in Rye, N.Y. after the girl returned home from the internship.

Ruben Tavarez Jr., the adult son of Refuge of Hope Associate Pastor Ruben Tavarez Sr., is also accused in the lawsuit of abusing the girl in August 2021.

The complaint also points to separate instances of abuse at Ignite Life Center, where two sons of pastors and a former volunteer have been arrested for child sex crimes.

Former Yankees closer Mariano Rivera and his wife Clare have been accused of covering up child sex abuse allegations against their son, Jaziel Rivera. The accusations came to light after a former employee of the Rivera family’s church, who worked closely with Jaziel, came forward with disturbing allegations.

According to the employee, Jaziel Rivera had been accused of sexually abusing multiple children in the church’s youth program. Despite the allegations, the Rivera family allegedly swept the incidents under the rug and failed to report them to the authorities.

The employee also claimed that Mariano and Clare Rivera used their influence and power within the church to protect their son from facing any consequences for his actions. The employee stated that the Rivera family’s reputation and status in the community were prioritized over the safety and well-being of the children who were victimized.

As the scandal continues to unfold, many are calling for a thorough investigation into the Rivera family’s involvement in covering up the child sex abuse allegations. It remains to be seen how Mariano and Clare Rivera will respond to the accusations and what repercussions they may face as a result of their alleged actions.
