49ers to repeat formula in 2025 with Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch, despite a disastrous 2024

Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch are set to continue their journey with the San Francisco 49ers next season, despite the challenges faced during the 2024 campaign. Team owner Jed York made this clear in a recent conversation with The San Francisco Standard, expressing his steadfast support for the coach-general manager duo.

York stated, “They’re not going anywhere,” reinforcing the idea that the successful partnership will remain intact. This assurance comes amidst swirling rumors regarding Shanahan’s potential interest from other teams seeking a head coach. York emphasized, “You can write that, for sure.”

Reports from ESPN’s Adam Schefter support York’s position, indicating that the 49ers have no plans to trade Shanahan, who has also expressed his desire to stay. Earlier this month, he addressed trade speculations directly, saying, “I don’t want to be any place in the world more than here.” This commitment reflects the long-term vision that both Shanahan and Lynch have cultivated since they joined the organization in 2017.

Lynch shared similar thoughts during a Dec. 8 interview ahead of the 49ers’ game against the Chicago Bears. Commenting on the chatter surrounding Shanahan’s future, Lynch remarked, “I’ve found the whole discussion on Kyle and some of the stuff rather comical.” He pointed out their significant achievements, highlighting, “We have won four of the last five division championships. We’ve been in two Super Bowls. The standard here is to win championships, and we’ve fallen short of that, but we have an excellent head coach.”

The recent struggles of the 49ers have been surprising, given their history of strong performances under Shanahan and Lynch. Following a loss to the Detroit Lions, San Francisco’s record now stands at 6-10, marking their first losing season since 2020. However, the accomplishments of Shanahan and Lynch are noteworthy. In their eight seasons with the franchise, they have led the team to four NFC Championship Game appearances and two Super Bowl runs.

Both Shanahan and Lynch secured multiyear extensions in September 2023, solidifying their roles within the organization. While this season has posed significant challenges, York’s public endorsement underscores the faith in their leadership. For now, any discussions about departures remain speculative, as both Shanahan and Lynch seem dedicated to guiding the 49ers back to championship glory.

The San Francisco 49ers may have had a disastrous 2024 season, but don’t count them out just yet. Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch are poised to repeat the formula that brought them success in the past and lead the team to glory in 2025.

Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks in 2024, including injuries to key players and underperforming performances on the field, Shanahan and Lynch have remained committed to their vision for the team. They have shown resilience and determination, working tirelessly to make the necessary adjustments and improvements for the upcoming season.

With a talented roster and a proven coaching staff in place, the 49ers have the potential to turn things around in 2025. Shanahan’s innovative offensive schemes and Lynch’s savvy roster building skills have been the foundation of the team’s success in the past, and there’s no reason to believe that they can’t replicate that success once again.

So, despite the disappointments of 2024, 49ers fans can look forward to a bright future with Shanahan and Lynch at the helm. With their leadership and dedication, the team is poised to make a strong comeback and compete for a championship in the upcoming season. Stay tuned for an exciting and promising 2025 season for the San Francisco 49ers. #GoNiners

49ers owner says Kyle Shanahan, John Lynch ‘are not going anywhere’

Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch will be back with the San Francisco 49ers next year after a disappointing 2024 season, according to team owner Jed York.

York told The San Francisco Standard that Shanahan and Lynch “are not going anywhere,” emphasizing that the successful coach-general manager tandem will remain in their current roles.

“You can write that, for sure,” York told the Standard before the Niners’ game Monday night against the Detroit Lions. “They’re not going anywhere.”

York was responding to the Standard’s question regarding recent speculation that other teams might target Shanahan via a trade to fill their head-coaching vacancy. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday that the 49ers are not interested in trading Shanahan and that the two-time NFC championship-winning coach isn’t interested in leaving San Francisco.

Shanahan also dismissed trade talk earlier this month, saying, “I don’t want to be any place in the world more than here.”

Lynch echoed those sentiments in a separate interview ahead of the 49ers’ game Dec. 8 against the Chicago Bears, who have been linked to Shanahan since firing coach Matt Eberflus last month.

“I’ve found the whole discussion on Kyle and some of the stuff rather comical,” Lynch told San Francisco radio station KNBR. “We have won four of the last five division championships. We’ve been in two Super Bowls.

“The standard here is to win championships, and we’ve fallen short of that, but we have an excellent head coach. And the fact people are talking about stuff like that, I do find it comical.”

Shanahan and Lynch signed multiyear extensions with the Niners in September 2023.

San Francisco fell to 6-10 with Monday night’s home loss to Detroit and is nearing the end of its first losing season since 2020. The Niners have reached the NFC Championship Game four times and have two Super Bowl appearances in eight seasons since hiring Shanahan and Lynch as their coach and GM, respectively.

In a recent statement, San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York made it clear that head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch are here to stay.

Despite a disappointing season for the team, York expressed his confidence in Shanahan and Lynch’s leadership and vision for the future of the franchise. He stated, “Kyle and John are not going anywhere. They have my full support and I believe in their ability to turn things around.”

This declaration comes amidst speculation about potential changes within the organization following a string of losses. However, York’s statement serves as a vote of confidence in Shanahan and Lynch, signaling that the ownership is committed to their long-term plan for success.

Fans can rest assured that the 49ers’ leadership remains stable, with Shanahan and Lynch at the helm for the foreseeable future. With their dedication and expertise, the team is poised to bounce back and compete at a high level in the seasons to come.

When I asked whether he expects a quick resolution Purdy’s pending negotiations — which can’t begin until after the 49ers’ regular-season finale Sunday in Arizona — York demurred, saying only that he hopes Purdy is the team’s quarterback for a long time.

None of this is a surprise, of course. York went through a carousel of coaches and executives before hiring Shanahan and Lynch shortly after the 2016 season and has no desire to repeat that. He’s got his coach and general manager. Shanahan and Lynch slowly rebuilt the 49ers’ roster, then burst through in 2019, making it to that season’s Super Bowl with QB Jimmy Garoppolo and a host of young stars.

They suffered an injury-ravaged season in 2020, then traded three first-round picks to move up in the 2021 draft and select Trey Lance, who failed to grab hold of the job. But they drafted Purdy with the last pick in the 2022 draft and watched him bloom into their long-term starting QB. Purdy led the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game the next January and to the Super Bowl after the 2023 season.

This season, the 49ers (6-9 heading into Monday’s game) are headed to a potential top-12 draft pick and their second losing record out of the last six. Overall, the 49ers have made the playoffs four times in the eight-season Shanahan/Lynch era — but have won at least two postseason games in each of those playoff seasons.

Within 49ers HQ, even as the losses have piled up, Shanahan and Lynch have remained in lockstep — and are seen chatting together before almost every practice. And, in vast contrast to the public whispering during Jim Harbaugh’s final years with the 49ers, there have been no indications, public or private, of any tension between the team’s three leaders.

Also, the two men both signed contract extensions in 2023 that guarantee them money through 2026 — and probably longer. Shanahan is believed to be making about $15 million a year through 2027.

“I don’t want to be any place in the world more than here,” Shanahan said when asked this month about rumors he might leave for another team. “And my family is just as strong if not a lot stronger [about that]. They’re going to have to kick me out of here.”

Shanahan’s not going anywhere, at least for another year. Neither is Lynch. It wasn’t a mystery, but now York is on the record about the certainty.

It’s official: Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch have signed contract extensions that will keep them with the San Francisco 49ers through the 2025 season. The dynamic duo, who have led the team to multiple playoff appearances and a Super Bowl appearance, have been instrumental in the team’s success and are excited to continue building a championship contender in the years to come.

Shanahan, known for his innovative offensive schemes and play-calling, has helped develop young quarterback prospects into franchise players, while Lynch has made key personnel moves to bolster the roster and create a winning culture in the locker room.

With their future secured, 49ers fans can rest assured that the team is in good hands and will continue to compete at the highest level in the years ahead. Here’s to many more successful seasons under the leadership of Shanahan and Lynch! #GoNiners #ShanahanLynch2025

  • Jed York says Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch aren’t “going anywhere”

Jed York says Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch aren’t “going anywhere”

Four weeks after a spitballed idea about how the Bears should try to fill their coaching vacancy morphed into a widespread thought that 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan could be traded to Chicago, team owner Jed York has chimed in regarding both Shanahan and G.M. john Lynch.

They’re not going anywhere,” York said before Monday night’s game, via Tim Kawakami of the San Francisco Standard.

It all started when someone (me) suggested that the Bears should break from the typical categories of coaching candidates (coordinators, fired former NFL head coaches, and college coaches) to call teams that might be thinking about making a change, and then if there’s an opening attempting to make a deal. I mentioned Shanahan, Ravens coach John Harbaugh, and Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel.

In the aftermath, Shanahan became the focal point. Two weeks ago, Troy Aikman endorsed that approach during the Bears-Vikings Monday night game.

The point stands. The Bears should make the calls. Hell, they should still call York. If he’s intrigued by what he could get from the Bears or someone else, who knows what might happen?

Shanahan was mentioned in part because it feels like both sides might benefit from a fresh start, and because the 49ers nearly traded Jim Harbaugh to the Browns in 2014, after three straight seasons of NFC Championship appearances, with a Super Bowl berth in the second.

The calls are free. And proven coaches are worth the draft-pick compensation.

As Aikman explained it, promoting a successful coordinator involves a roll of the dice that he’ll thrive at the next level. A coordinator who has already shown he can coach an NFL team has real value.

Besides, haven’t we learned to not take such broad proclamations at face value? From multiple teams having “no intention” to trade a player who was then traded to a man who once said “I’m not going to be the Alabama coach” who then became the Alabama coach, certain situations require certain things to be said. In no uncertain terms.

Even if the truth entails far less certainty.

In a recent press conference, San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York made it clear that head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch are not going anywhere. Despite a disappointing season, York expressed his confidence in the leadership of Shanahan and Lynch, stating that they have his full support moving forward.

York emphasized the importance of continuity and stability within the organization, highlighting the progress that has been made under the guidance of Shanahan and Lynch. He believes that the team is on the right track and that with some key adjustments, they will be able to bounce back and compete at a high level in the upcoming seasons.

Fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Shanahan and Lynch will remain at the helm of the 49ers, with York fully backing their vision for the team. With a strong foundation in place, the future looks bright for San Francisco as they look to turn things around and get back to their winning ways.

Kyle Shanahan hopeful struggling former 3rd-round pick can bounce back

Despite recent struggles from Jake Moody, the San Francisco 49ers still believe they have the right guy at kicker.

Moody is now 23-of-30 on field goal tries this season and missed again from 41 yards out in the 49ers’ 29-17 loss at the Miami Dolphins last Sunday.

Since returning from a right high-ankle sprain that he sustained in Week 5 trying to make a tackle on a kickoff return against the Arizona Cardinals, Moody has missed six field goal attempts.

That included a trio of missed field goals of 49, 50 and 44 yards at Tampa Bay in Week 10 and a pair of missed field goals in a snow storm at Buffalo from 45 and 55 yards in Week 13.

Though he misfired three times, Moody did connect on the game-winning, 44-yard field goal as time expired in the 49ers’ 23-20 win over the Bucs.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked on Thursday if recent inconsistencies raise any questions about Moody’s long-term future with the franchise.

“I still feel the same about him, that I believe he is going to be our guy. Everyone has got to perform and do things like that and I think he has had a tough year. I think before his high-ankle sprain, I think he was like, missed one. I think he was 12 of 13 before that.

“So I thought he was doing really well and then had a high-ankle sprain to his kicking foot. Since he’s come back, he hasn’t been as consistent, obviously. But I think a lot of that probably has to do with that, just common-sense wise. And hopefully he can get to this offseason, heal up and find a stroke again and play at a high level that I think he will, because he’s real talented,” Shanahan said.

Moody was actually one make better than Shanahan credited him for prior to suffering the high-ankle sprain against the Arizona Cardinals. The 6-foot-1, 210 pound kicker made 13 of his first 14 field goal tries on the season, including every kick from inside 50 yards.

Shanahan said that Moody has the mental makeup to bounce back from this recent tough stretch.

“I think he’s made of the right stuff just from a mental standpoint and everything and I think he has all the tools to be a great kicker in the this league. He’s still working to find that though,” Shanahan said.

Shanahan touched on how patience with kickers can be vital. To illustrate his point, Shanahan referred back to his time in Washington and the franchise’s decision to cut Graham Gano.

After being cut by Washington, Gano morphed into one of the league’s trustiest and highest-paid kickers.

“That’s what’s tough, I remember we were in Washington and we had a young kicker who missed a number of kicks, but I didn’t have much experience with kicking then,” Shanahan recalled.

“I remember I kept telling the head coach that he’s cost us two games, when are we going to move on from this guy? And he kept telling me how talented he was, ‘You’ve got to be patient.’ But then he lost us a third game and then the head coach had to make a move, but two years later that guy was the highest paid kicker in the league and going to Pro Bowls. So he was right, we had to be patient. But how long can you do it?”

The 49ers are hopeful their patience will be rewarded with Moody.

“I think that’s just what’s tough with that position. There are no backups and stuff like that, so that’s what the challenge is. But I believe we’ve got the right guy and I think that eventually, I think he has shown that at times, thought he showed that at times his rookie year. I thought he showed that big time being 12 out of 13 to start this year. And I think he’ll show us all that in the future,” Shanahan said.

Moody was selected by the 49ers with the No. 99 overall pick in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft. The Michigan alum connected on 21-of-25 field goal tries during the 2023 regular season and 6-of-8 field goal kicks in the 2023 postseason with the 49ers.

Kyle Shanahan, head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, is hopeful that struggling former 3rd-round pick Dante Pettis can bounce back and reach his full potential. Pettis, who has shown flashes of brilliance but has struggled to consistently perform at a high level, has been working hard in training camp to improve his game.

Shanahan believes that Pettis has the talent and potential to be a key contributor to the 49ers offense, and is optimistic that he can turn things around this season. With a renewed focus and determination, Pettis is looking to make the most of his opportunities and prove his worth to the team.

As the regular season approaches, all eyes will be on Pettis as he looks to silence his critics and show that he is capable of being a difference-maker on the field. With Shanahan’s support and guidance, Pettis has the tools to succeed and make a significant impact for the 49ers this season.

  • Promising Brandon Aiyuk recovery update provided by Kyle Shanahan – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

Promising Brandon Aiyuk recovery update provided by Kyle Shanahan – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

Star 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is recovering from right ACL and MCL tears he suffered earlier this season.

San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan offered a promising update on Aiyuk’s rehab progress in speaking to reporters on Saturday.

“Yeah, he’s plugging along with that,” Shanahan said. “The rehab guys I don’t see too much of. They come in early in the morning and they’re usually out of here before we get off the practice field. But he went to L.A. for surgery, did the rehab there for a while, but he’s been back here like the last month or so going through his process, working hard. It’s a long process, but he’s on track.”

Aiyuk being “on track,” as Shanahan said, is good news for the playoff-eliminated 49ers.

The 26-year-old signed a four-year, $120 million contract extension on Aug. 29 just before the start of the 2024 NFL season, ending one of the league’s most notable contract hold-outs.

But this season obviously wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Aiyuk struggled before suffering his devastating injuries, recording a mere 25 receptions for 374 yards and zero touchdowns. The star receiver appeared to be rusty after his hold-out and didn’t make the plays the 49ers were accustomed to him making.

San Francisco certainly could use Aiyuk during what many are expecting to be a do-or-die 2025 season for the 49ers — one that can end in a successful quest for the franchise’s sixth Vince Lombardi Trophy or as the one responsible for sparking a rebuild.

Aiyuk has 294 career receptions for 4,305 yards and 25 touchdowns. The 49ers — especially quarterback Brock Purdy — eagerly will welcome the wideout back when the time is right.

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has been making strides in his recovery from a hamstring injury, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. In an update provided by NBC Sports Bay Area & California, Shanahan revealed that Aiyuk has been working diligently to get back on the field.

Shanahan praised Aiyuk’s work ethic and determination, stating that he is “really impressed with how hard he’s been working to rehab and get back to full health.” The coach also noted that Aiyuk has been participating in team meetings and staying engaged with the offense despite being sidelined.

The update on Aiyuk’s recovery is a positive sign for the 49ers, who are counting on the second-year receiver to play a key role in their offense this season. Aiyuk showed flashes of his potential as a rookie, recording 60 receptions for 748 yards and five touchdowns in 12 games.

While there is still no definitive timeline for Aiyuk’s return to action, Shanahan’s comments suggest that the young receiver is on the right track. Fans will be eagerly awaiting Aiyuk’s comeback, as he has the potential to be a game-changer for the 49ers.

Stay tuned for more updates on Brandon Aiyuk’s recovery as the season progresses.
