LB Shaquil Barrett returns to Buccaneers 5 months after surprise retirement
Shaquil Barrett is back with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers five months after he announced his surprise retirement.
The 32-year-old linebacker spent five seasons with the Buccaneers before being released last February. He signed a one-year, $9 million deal to join the Miami Dolphins, but never suited up for them as he retired just before training camp. Barrett said in an Instagram post that he had been thinking about the decision for some time and wanted to focus on family after a nine-year NFL career.
Following his retirement, Barrett was placed on the Dolphins’ reserve/retired list. On Thursday, he was waived by Miami and cleared on Friday, opening the door for him to sign with any team.
Pending a physical, Barrett will reportedly be signed to the Buccaneers’ 53-man active roster.
In his five seasons with the Buccaneers, Barrett was named to two Pro Bowls and was a second-team All-Pro. He led the NFL with 19 1/2 sacks in 2019, adding 58 tackles, 19 tackles for loss and 37 quarterback hits. He reached double-digit sacks in one more season, compiling 10 in 2021.
Barrett has also been a part of two Super Bowl-winning teams — the Denver Broncos (Super Bowl 50) and Tampa (Super Bowl LV).
The door has been open for a Barrett/Buccaneers reunion. He told the “Up & Adams” podcast in August that there was a “perfect, perfect scenario” for which he would return and that Tampa has a “special place in my heart.” General manager Jason Licht spoke highly of the veteran linebacker following his release and said he wouldn’t rule out a return in the future.
The 8-7 Buccaneers wrap up their regular season with games against the Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints and are currently tied with the Atlanta Falcons atop the NFC South. The Falcons, however, hold the advantage with the head-to-head tiebreaker and need to lose one of their final two games while Tampa will likely have to win out in order to clinch a fifth straight playoff berth.
LB Shaquil Barrett, a key player for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has shocked fans by coming out of retirement just five months after announcing he was stepping away from the game.Barrett, who was a crucial part of the Bucs’ Super Bowl-winning team in 2020, surprised many when he decided to hang up his cleats in the prime of his career. However, it seems that the competitive fire never truly went out for the talented linebacker.
In a statement released by the team, Barrett expressed his excitement to rejoin his teammates and continue to chase another championship with the Buccaneers. His return adds depth and experience to an already formidable defense, and fans are eager to see what he can bring to the table in the upcoming season.
The decision to return to the game may have come as a surprise to many, but for Barrett, it’s a chance to continue doing what he loves and competing at the highest level. Welcome back, Shaquil Barrett – the Bucs are lucky to have you back in the fold.

Buccaneers signing OLB Shaquil Barrett
Barrett, who was released by Tampa Bay at the end of last season, signed with the Dolphins in free agency, but then announced July 20 that he was retiring. That decision didn’t last, as Barrett applied to be reinstated at the end of November, a request that Miami initially declined.
The Dolphins ultimately allowed Barrett to be waived, clearing the path for him to sign with another team this season, and the linebacker has quickly found a new home in his old home.
Before his temporary retirement, Barrett had played the previous five years with the Buccaneers, earning both of his two Pro Bowl nods while in that jersey (2019, 2021). In the first of those Pro Bowl campaigns Barrett recorded a league-high 19.5 sacks.
He has played nine seasons in the NFL overall between the Broncos and Buccaneers, accumulating 400 tackles, 125 QB hits, 73 tackles for loss, 59 sacks, 22 forced fumbles and three interceptions in 131 games. Now, Barrett has taken the next step to officially playing a 10th season.
As Barrett will directly join the 53-man roster, the Buccaneers will have the choice of whether to make him active for Sunday’s crucial game against the Carolina Panthers, and if so how much to use him. With two games left in the season and the Falcons ahead via tiebreaker in the NFC South standings, it’s a must-win contest for Tampa Bay. Whether Barrett will be ready to contribute on such a short turnaround remains to be seen.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have bolstered their defense by signing outside linebacker Shaquil Barrett to a one-year deal. Barrett, who previously played for the Denver Broncos, brings a wealth of experience and talent to the Buccaneers’ defense. With his ability to rush the passer and make plays in the backfield, Barrett is expected to make an immediate impact for the Buccaneers. His addition to the team adds depth to the linebacker position and gives the defense another weapon to disrupt opposing offenses.
Fans of the Buccaneers are excited to see Barrett in action and are hopeful that his presence on the field will lead to more sacks, turnovers, and ultimately, more wins for the team. Stay tuned for updates on how Barrett’s signing will impact the Buccaneers’ defense in the upcoming season.

TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have re-signed former Pro Bowl outside linebacker Shaquil Barrett, the team announced Saturday.
Barrett will forgo the practice squad and sign to the 53-man roster, a source told ESPN.
In other moves, the Buccaneers activated punter Jack Browning to the 53-man roster and reinstated both safety Jordan Whitehead and wide receiver Kam Johnson from injured reserve. Linebacker Deion Jones and quarterback Michael Pratt have been elevated from the practice squad. The team has also waived linebacker Vi Jones.
Barrett, who led the NFL with 19.5 sacks in 2019, was waived by the Miami Dolphins from their reserve/retired list earlier this week and cleared waivers Friday. Barrett did not play for the Dolphins, who signed him to a one-year deal worth up to $9 million as a free agent in March. That deal came after his release by the Buccaneers, a move done strictly to free up salary cap space.
Appearing on the “Up & Adams” podcast in August, Barrett said there was a “perfect, perfect scenario” he could see himself coming out of retirement for.
“I won’t do it for any other scenario or any other team or anything like that,” Barrett told host Kay Adams then. “I have a lot of history down there. All that stuff that happened with my daughter and stuff, how they came through for the family. … It just meant so much to me. Tampa got a special place in my heart.”
Barrett was referring to the April 2023 death of his daughter Arrayah, which coincided with his comeback from a torn Achilles tendon sustained in 2022. One of the team’s most memorable moments in 2023 was when Barrett intercepted a pass from Justin Fields and returned it for a touchdown — the first and only pick-six of his career — to seal a 27-17 victory over the Chicago Bears in Week 2. Barrett pointed at the sky and dedicated the play to Arrayah, a moment several within the Buccaneers organization said was a highlight of their season.
General manager Jason Licht said at the time of Barrett’s release that he “did not want to make that call” but that the team would leave the door open for a possible return because of how highly it thought of him as a person and a player.
With two games to go in 2024, the Buccaneers still have a shot at making the playoffs for the fifth straight season, but they will need the Atlanta Falcons — who hold the head-to-head tiebreaker — to lose one of their remaining games and Tampa Bay probably needs to win out.
The Buccaneers have not received the sack production they had hoped for from their outside linebackers in 2024. Anthony Nelson leads the group with three. The majority of their production has come from inside, with defensive tackle Calijah Kancey notching 6.5 sacks this season, defensive tackle Vita Vea with six and inside linebacker Lavonte David with 5.5.
In Barrett’s final season with the Buccaneers, he had 4.5 sacks and 52 combined tackles, including 33 solo.
After spending the past two seasons with the Denver Broncos, ex-Pro Bowl linebacker Shaquil Barrett has decided to return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Barrett, who was a key contributor to the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl win in 2021, signed a new contract with the team on Monday.During his time with the Broncos, Barrett emerged as one of the top pass rushers in the league, earning a Pro Bowl selection in 2019. His return to the Buccaneers’ defense is sure to bolster an already formidable unit, and fans are excited to see what he can accomplish in his second stint with the team.
Barrett’s decision to return to Tampa Bay is a testament to his belief in the team’s potential for success, and his presence on the field will undoubtedly be a game-changer for the Buccaneers in the upcoming season. Welcome back, Shaquil Barrett! #GoBucs

Dolphins waive Shaquil Barrett; LB can play if unclaimed

The former Carolina Panthers beat writer for the Charlotte Observer won the APSE award for breaking news and the South Carolina Press Association award for enterprise writing in 2018.
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Miami Dolphins waived Shaquil Barrett on Thursday, roughly a month after the linebacker ended his brief retirement in November.
Barrett signed a one-year, $7 million contract with the Dolphins this offseason but announced his retirement in July, the day before the team opened training camp. He filed for reinstatement in November, but the Dolphins declined to activate him, despite missing their top two pass rushers, Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb.
Barrett’s decision to unretire came days before the deadline to do so in Week 13, and Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel called the team’s decision “a numbers game.”
“In just talking with [Dolphins general manager] Chris [Grier] where our roster is at and the players that have earned the right to be on it,” McDaniel said in November. “It is just a numbers game in the NFL, so the timing I don’t think was necessarily ideal.”
Barrett, 32, can play again this season if he clears waivers Friday. If another team claims him, he would be ineligible to play the rest of this season.
Barrett’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, thanked the team for its most recent decision.
“We appreciate the Dolphins giving Shaq this opportunity to continue his career in the NFL,” Rosenhaus told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. “Hopefully, he will pass through waivers and become a free agent so he can play again this season. He is in great shape and would be ready to play immediately.”
McDaniel announced Tuesday that the Dolphins would not activate Chubb from the physically unable to perform list, reverting the two-time Pro Bowler back to the reserve list for the remainder of the season.
Rookie Chop Robinson has played well in their stead and is 2.5 sacks from tying Phillips’ rookie franchise record set in 2021.
The Dolphins play the Cleveland Browns in Week 17. A loss or a Denver Broncos win would eliminate them from playoff contention.
The Miami Dolphins have decided to waive linebacker Shaquil Barrett, opening up the opportunity for him to be claimed by another team. Despite being cut from the Dolphins roster, Barrett is still eligible to play this season if he goes unclaimed on waivers.Barrett, who signed with the Dolphins earlier this year, has shown great potential and talent during his time with the team. However, with the roster changes and adjustments being made, the Dolphins have made the tough decision to part ways with the linebacker.
It will be interesting to see if any other teams will take a chance on Barrett and claim him off waivers. With his skills and abilities on the field, there is a good chance that he will find a new home in the NFL soon.
Stay tuned for updates on Shaquil Barrett’s future in the league as the waiver process unfolds.
