In an old interview, which was done six months before his fourth title in 2006, Shaq talked about getting so close to the dream in 2005.
The big man claimed that he is usually very cautious on the brink of the playoffs. However, in 2005, he wasn’t cautious at all and ended up getting injured. The “freak injury” that Shaq was referring to was a deep thigh bruise caused by an impact from Jermaine O’Neal, which made it difficult for him to move, let alone do what he wanted to on the floor.
Shaq said that during the playoffs, when the stakes are high, he always raises his game to another level. But he couldn’t do that in 2005 due to his injury.
But he took pride in the fact that he managed to get Miami so close despite his handicap. Shaq said, “I think it [the injury] hindered me in the playoffs. Everyone knows that the playoffs is the time where I like to raise my game, wasn’t able to raise my game and still we almost got it done.”
The Heat took the Conference Finals against the Pistons to Game 7 and lost. Shaq said that if he wasn’t injured, he had no doubts about winning his fourth title that year.
Although Detroit got the best of him in 2005, the following season was the season of redemption for Shaq and the Heat.

Jimmie Johnson doubles down on free throw competition with Shaquille O’Neal, raises stakes
The back-and-forth between Jimmie Johnson and Shaquille O’Neal took another turn Friday. The NASCAR icon fired back at the NBA legend and made a new proposal in their free throw competition.

O’Neal, of course, wasn’t known much for that jump shot or his efficiency at the charity stripe. He retired as a career 52% free throw shooter but was as dominant a center as anyone has ever seen in the NBA. Without knowing much of his prowess on the hardwood, Johnson has to like his chances against O’Neal — in a free throw competition, that is.
O’Neal, of course, retired from the NBA in 2011 and is a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. He’s also a staple of TNT’s Inside The NBA, which will move to ESPN next season as part of a sublicensing agreement.
Johnson, meanwhile, made his Daytona 500 debut in 2002 and has two victories to his name. But at 49 years old, he’s racing a more limited schedule.
As part of his announcement, he also released his 2025 schedule. It only includes a second race in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte. If he qualifies in both races, Charlotte will be his 700th Cup Series start. Carvana will serve as the sponsor for Johnson, and he will be back in the No. 84 for his team, Legacy Motor Club.
Johnson, who co-owns Legacy alongside Maury Gallagher, has competed in 12 races over the last two seasons, making nine starts in 2024. His best finish was a P26 result in the last season’s finale at Phoenix. Johnson has an average finish of 31.8.

Shaquille O’Neal Sends 7-Word Verdict on Caitlin Clark’s Time Athlete of the Year Win
Back in September, NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal admitted that he had a change of heart regarding Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark in an interview with Sports Illustrated.
“(Clark) does everything right,” Shaq said in the interview. “I never spoke about her (before) because Angel (Reese) is my girl but I can truthfully say — Caitlin Clark is for real. I’m watching her play and I’m trying to be upset but she makes the right pass, makes the right play. Girls try to beat her up and she doesn’t really complain. She’s a great one, even early on (in her career).
“She’s the real deal,” Shaq added of Clark. “Much respect to her and her family and the way she grew up and the way she plays. All little girls should watch all the WNBA players play but those two (Clark and Reese) are my favorite.”
It was really cool to hear Shaq give Clark her flowers, despite his affiliation with Reese.
Since then, Clark has added multiple impressive records and accolades to her resumé; perhaps the most notable being her winning Time Athlete of the Year for 2024.
Shaq conducted an interview with TMZ Live that appeared to be recorded back in December but was released on January 1. And when the topic of Clark winning this Time honor was brought up, Shaq had only seven words to express his opinion.
“Congratulations to her. She’s a fabulous player,” Shaq said.
He kept it brief when discussing Clark’s Time win, but went on to discuss other WNBA matters. “Caitlin, my girl Angel [Reese], definitely brought a lot of publicity to the WNBA. But we can’t forget about all the other WNBA greats. A’ja [Wilson], Sabrina [Ionescu], Diana [Taurasi], all the women that’s playing great,” he said.
“They’re finally getting the credit that they deserve. They play much harder than the men, they play better than the men. That’s a beautiful game to watch,” Shaq added.

For eight decorated seasons, Los Angeles Lakers legends Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant had a fraught-but-productive working relationship.
Bryant was a 17-year-old shooting guard phenom out of Lower Merion High School in Philadelphia in 1996 when Los Angeles shipped out center Vladimir Divac to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for the right to select Bryant with the No. 13 pick. By their 2000-01 season, however, fissures were starting to show between O’Neal, the established veteran star and the club’s offensive fulcrum, and Bryant, whose flashy game had made him a fan favorite — despite him clearly being a supplemental superstar next to the Big Diesel. Tensions fully bubbled over after the club’s 2003-04 run, which saw a veteran-laden L.A. club fall in a five-game NBA Finals defeat to the Detroit Pistons.
In the 2004 offseason, O’Neal was flipped to the Miami Heat to accommodate Bryant. Eventually, the Lakers landed another future Hall of Fame big man, Pau Gasol, in a 2008 deadline trade with the Memphis Grizzlies. With Bryant now unquestionable the team’s leader and most valuable player, the Lakers promptly appeared in another three consecutive NBA Finals, winning in 2009 and 2010.
On a recent episode of his must-listen podcast “Gil’s Arena,” retired former three-time All-Star Washington Wizards point guard Gilbert Arenas made a bold statement about Bryant’s hierarchical place on those title teams next to O’Neal.
