  • Raleigh police chief officer wounded in shooting; ex-wife of suspect details terrifying moments

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson praised First Class Officer Max Gillick, who was wounded during a shooting Tuesday as he responded to a call in the Renaissance Park neighborhood.

“He’s a hero. Very heroic, very courageous,” Patterson said.

Patterson delivered remarks Friday morning at a Raleigh Police Department promotion ceremony, where she shared more details on Gillick’s actions.

“As many of you know, Officer Gillick was shot Tuesday evening as he was performing his duties and protecting the victim who had been assaulted in a domestic situation,” said Patterson.

As police arrived on the scene, they heard shots from inside the home. An officer called for backup and a person inside continued shooting. During the gunfire exchange, Gillick was wounded and the suspect was killed.

Gillick underwent surgery Tuesday night at WakeMed and remains in critical condition.

“While he is progressing well in his recovery, he is not out of the woods. He still needs, desperately needs our prayers and positive vibes,” said Patterson.

Authorities identified the shooting suspect as 70-year-old Antonio Rodrigues, and the victim as 73-year-old John Rowe; both men died. The incident happened inside the home of Rodrigues’ ex-wife, Jill Rohner.

“(Antonio) just came in and shot John. And so, John fell to the floor and I was on the phone with 911 and was screaming bloody murder for them to please hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry,” said Rohner in an interview with our newsgathering partners at The News & Observer.

According to court records, Rodrigues had pleaded guilty to several counts of stalking and disclosing private images in 2021 and 2022, cases in which Rohner was the victim.

“I have pleaded that (Rodrigues) get serious health and mental health kind of help because I suspected that he could snap at any minute. He was just constantly harassing me,” said Rohner.

She said Rodrigues had previously been violent toward her; according to The News & Observer, a Carteret County judge granted their divorce in 2014.

“The first place he held me down with a gun was in a home in Carteret County,” Rohner said, and she added that she believed the townhome in Raleigh felt safe.

She said the suspect, Antonio Rodrigues, had previously been violent toward her.

Rodrigues was on probation at the time of the shooting, with Rohner calling for victims of domestic violence to receive more protection.

“He could have killed me. He opted not to. We were face-to-face and I was pleading with him like, ‘What are you doing? Why, please stop.’ And he said ‘You took everything from me,’” said Rohner.

Rohner told ABC11 that she was in a relationship with Rowe and had planned on moving in with him.

“A couple of years ago, I met this wonderful man, John Rowe, who I have recently said to people, (it) took me 67 years, but I finally got it right, found the right person, was very much in love,” said Rohner.

This is the second high-profile shooting within a week for the Raleigh Police Department, coming days after an incident at a North Hills restaurant, in which two people, including the suspect died, and a third person was injured.

The incidents underscore broader efforts to ensure a widespread law enforcement presence, as the department works to fill open positions.

“A day like (the promotion ceremony), when people see advancement, the opportunity for advancement, they want to be a part of this team and so they come to the department. Our challenge moving forward is not in recruiting and retention. We want to make sure that our leaders are doing everything that they can to keep the people that we have,” said Patterson.

A Raleigh Police Department spokesperson told ABC11 there are 51 vacancies, down from 84 vacancies at the beginning of 2024. On Saturday, Raleigh Police are holding a hiring event at the Law Enforcement Training Center, which begins at 9 a.m.

  • AI weapon detection system at Antioch High School failed to detect gun in Nashville shooting

An artificial intelligence-powered weapon detection system failed to pick up the handgun a 17-year-old Nashville, Tennessee, student used in a school shooting Wednesday that killed a 16-year-old girl, officials said.

The software, called Omnilert, failed to detect the gun because of where cameras were in Antioch High School, Metro Nashville Public Schools spokesperson Sean Braisted said at a news conference Thursday afternoon.

But the system was activated by police brandishing their weapons during the response to the shooting, Braisted said.

Omnilert connects to the school’s existing network of cameras and uses AI technology to detect weapons, he said, but “in this instance, based on the shooter’s location in proximity to the cameras, it wasn’t close enough to get an accurate read and to activate that alarm.”

“The location of the shooter and the firearm meant that the weapon was not visible,” said Omnilert CEO Dave Fraser in an email. “This is not a case of the firearm not being recognized by the system.”

Metro Nashville Public Schools Director Adrienne Battle said, “There is not one system that is 100% going to capture everything that a person may have on them.”

Omnilert works by turning security cameras “into life-saving tools, protecting lives while reducing the operational, legal, and social costs of gun violence,” its website says. It helps detect firearms and then triggers immediate alerts.

“These are designed to capture things that are on camera, and so we wanted to have a system that worked on multiple cameras throughout the network. It does work, but it’s not going to work in every instance, in every spot, based on where that weapon might be visible,” Braisted said. “So that’s why we have additional safety and security protocols.”

In addition to Omnilert, the school uses AI systems at the front door, it has security vestibules, and it uses school resource officers.

“It all works together as a system, but one system alone is not going to keep people safe,” Braisted said. “And there’s also just the general public concerns around how a 17-year-old has a weapon.

“I mean, these are questions that are beyond the scope of Metro Schools but need to be addressed by the broader community,” he said. “But we are doing what we can as a district to install and equip our schools with the safety protocols and resources that we can use to be safe.”

The missed detection offers a lesson in the shortcomings of high-tech security solutions — and the risk of relying on them, experts said.

“This highlights the challenges school districts face,” said Donald Maye, head of operations at IPVM, a surveillance technology research company that investigates weapon-detection systems.

“They’ll make these announcements that they’ve invested millions on a solution and then there are still many cases that can occur where the system is not going to be a factor in preventing violence,” Maye said.

Amy Klinger, director of programs for the nonprofit Educator’s School Safety Network, said the most effective safeguards against violence are based on building trust among students, teachers and administrators to share early signs of potential threats — like erratic behavior or troubling social media posts.

“In the vast majority of cases there is something of concern — behaviors, disclosures, conversations, warning signs — that if someone is paying attention you could pick up on,” Klinger said. “If you combine that with technology, great. But you can’t replace it with technology.”

Some have questioned why the school did not use metal detectors. Battle told reporters Thursday that research has shown there are pros and cons to using the detectors.

“There are lots of unintended consequences, mainly when you think about the types of learning environments we want for our students. I mean, the first person we want our students to interact with are their principals and their teachers and their fellow students,” she said.

A motive in the shooting is unclear. Nashville Police Chief John Drake said authorities are looking into “some materials on the internet” believed to be from the shooter, who was identified as Solomon Henderson. He shot and killed himself after the attack.

Authorities said Henderson was an active student. They said he took the school bus before he later opened fire in the cafeteria, killing Josselin Corea Escalante. Another student was wounded when he was grazed in the arm.

Recently, there was a tragic shooting at Antioch High School in Nashville, Tennessee where a student was injured. The school had implemented an AI weapon detection system to help prevent such incidents, but unfortunately, it failed to detect the gun in this instance.

This failure highlights the limitations of relying solely on technology to keep students safe. While AI can be a valuable tool in enhancing security measures, it is not foolproof and should not be seen as a substitute for proper training, vigilance, and proactive measures.

It is crucial for schools to have a comprehensive approach to safety that includes regular drills, mental health support for students, and a strong relationship with law enforcement. While technology can play a role in this, it is important to remember that it is just one piece of the puzzle.

Our thoughts are with the victim of the shooting and their loved ones, and we hope that this incident serves as a reminder of the importance of ongoing efforts to improve school safety.

  • Rapper A$AP Rocky faces shooting assault trial in Los Angeles

An assault trial begins on Friday against rapper A$AP Rocky, who is accused of firing a gun at a former friend in Los Angeles.

The rapper, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, faces 24 years in prison if convicted on two felony assault charges in the 2021 incident near a Hollywood hotel.

The Grammy-nominated hip-hop star, who is also a fashion mogul and the longtime partner of singer Rihanna, has pleaded not guilty and denied the allegations.

The victim, fellow artist and childhood friend Terell Ephron, testified last year that bullets grazed his knuckles and he decided to seek medical treatment at a hospital after flying back to New York.

A jury of seven women and five men was selected over the course of three days this week before the opening arguments kick off on Friday. The trial is expected to last about three weeks.

Authorities say the shooting happened on 6 November in 2021 after a “heated discussion” in Hollywood between the rapper and Terell Ephron, who were both part of the A$AP Mob hip-hop collective and have known one another since their time together at a New York high school.

The rapper is alleged to have first pulled out the weapon in a threatening manner during a physical argument outdoors, just one block from the Hollywood Walk of Fame, according to the charging documents.

Prosecutors say he later fired the weapon twice in the direction of the victim, who sustained a minor injury.

The rapper rejected a plea offer ahead of the trial and said the weapon he was accused of firing was a “prop gun” incapable of firing real ammunition, according to US media. The AP news agency reported that this would have meant agreeing to 180 days in prison.

His attorney told US media that they are ready for the trial and look forward to putting it behind them.

“We’re ready to go. It’s been a long time,” his attorney Joe Tacopina told the Associated Press. “It’s been something that’s waiting over Rocky’s head and Rihanna and their family’s heads for a while. We’re anxious to get this thing underway and get this behind him.”

A key point of contention in the case is the police investigation and Mr Ephron’s injuries. The rapper’s attorneys argued in court documents that the case should be dismissed over Mr Ephron taking multiple days to report the incident.

Authorities who responded to the shooting did not find any shell casings when surveying the area but Mr Ephron returned to the scene later and gathered two shell casings he said he found in the area. He brought them when he reported the incident two days later.

The gun allegedly used in the incident was not located.

Mr Mayers’s lawyer also questioned the wound Mr Ephron had on his hand and allege it may have been from a punch.

The trial is happening at a crucial moment for A$AP Rocky, who has two children with singer Rihanna.

In May, he is set to co-chair the 2025 Met Gala alongside big names like Anna Wintour, British race car driver Lewis Hamilton, singer Pharrell Williams and basketball superstar LeBron James.

Later this summer, he is also set to appear in a film directed by Spike Lee called “Highest 2 Lowest” with acting legend Denzel Washington.

The star was previously given a two-year suspended sentence for his role in a brawl in Stockholm in August 2019.

The rapper and two members of his entourage were convicted of kicking and beating a 19-year-old man after an argument. They said they acted in self-defence, but the court rejected their argument.

The case drew worldwide media attention after US president Donald Trump unsuccessfully tried to secure Mr Mayers’s release from prison as he awaited trial.

Born in New York, Mr Mayers was one of the biggest break-out stars of the 2010s, earning eight platinum singles in the US including Wild For The Night, Everyday, LSD and A$AP Forever.

He rose to fame after being championed by Drake, and has worked with artists including Alicia Keys, Lana Del Rey, Skepta, Selena Gomez and Kendrick Lamar.

The BBC’s Mark Savage contributed reporting.

  • First Class Officer Max A. Gillick | RPD identify officer critically injured in deadly shooting in Renaissance Park area

  • Georgia basketball shooting for bracketology boost at Arkansas

ATHENS — A road win at Arkansas on Wednesday night isn’t necessarily a “must-win” for a Georgia basketball team striving to build an NCAA tournament resume.

But the 9 p.m. tip in Fayetteville represents one heck of an opportunity for the Bulldogs (14-4, 2-3 SEC) to steal a road win in the ultra-competitive SEC.

Georgia was most recently projected as a No. 8 seed in the NCAA tournament — one of 12 SEC teams currently expected in the field — per ESPN bracketology expert Joe Lunardi.

The Bulldogs have an average rank of 31.8 among six popular metrics (NET, KenPom, Jorvik, KPI, BPO and SOR), according to a recent UGA release.

Beating the Razorbacks — UGA is a 1-point underdog and has lost seven straight in Bud Walton Arena dating back to a 60-59 win in 2011 — would provided a boost to the Bulldogs’ postseason resume

Georgia, coming off losses at No. 6 Tennessee (74-56) last Wednesday and at home against No. 1 Auburn (70-68) on Saturday, will be facing an uncharacteristically cold Razorbacks (11-7, 0-5) team.

The Razorbacks spent six of the first eight weeks this season under first-year coach John Calipari ranked in the Top 25 on the strength of 11 wins against a schedule that KenPom.com ranks as the 46th toughest in the nation.

Arkansas is expected to be without freshman point guard Boogie Fland, the team’s second-leading scorer (15.1 points per game) and assists leader (103).

Fland injured his hand in the Razorbacks’ 71-63 loss to Florida on Jan. 11 and has been fighting to play through the injury.

Fland, who was a 5-star recruit and McDonald’s All-American coming out of Archbishop Stepinac High School (N.Y.) in the Bronx, played 85-percent of the minutes possible and accounted for 25 percent of the Razorbacks’ shot volume.

Georgia’s only road win to this point was back on Nov. 15, when the Bulldogs beat Georgia Tech (8-11) by a 77-69 count in McCamish Pavilion.

The road will get even rockier later this week for the Bulldogs, who dropped their first two road SEC games at No. 16 Ole Miss (15-3) and at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, as they travel to play at No. 5 Florida (16-2) on Saturday.

Georgia’s schedule strength ranks only 76th — 12th among SEC teams — despite opening the league slate playing Top 25 opposition in its first five conference games.

Such metrics will take care of themselves as the Bulldogs wade deeper into the SEC waters, but wins will need to be part of the equation for Georgia to make what would be its first NCAA tournament appearance in 10 years.

Lunardi suggested last week SEC teams could make the NCAA tourney fields as an at-large even with league marks as low as 7-11 or 6-12.

That’s not where Coach Mike White’s mindset is at, of course, as he works to identify and improve the team’s ball movement.

The Bulldogs rank last in the SEC in assist/turnover ratio in league games, averaging just 7.8 per outing.

Florida and Arkansas, however, rank 15th and 16th in the SEC in league games in the steals category, which could provide optimism for the Georgia backcourt.

Big picture, White knows he has a capable UGA team that’s in the midst of raising the bar on the basketball culture, and a road win at Arkansas — or any SEC school — would go a long way toward that.

The Georgia basketball team is gearing up for a crucial matchup against Arkansas as they look to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament. With March Madness right around the corner, every game is critical for the Bulldogs as they aim to improve their seeding and boost their chances of making a deep run in the tournament.

Currently sitting on the bubble, Georgia knows that a win against Arkansas could be just what they need to solidify their spot in the bracket. The Bulldogs have been playing some of their best basketball as of late, with impressive wins over ranked opponents like Kentucky and Tennessee.

Led by star guard Sahvir Wheeler and forward Toumani Camara, Georgia has the talent and experience to compete with the best teams in the country. If they can continue their strong play and come out with a win against Arkansas, they will undoubtedly catch the attention of the selection committee and improve their chances of making it to the Big Dance.

So, Georgia fans, get ready to cheer on your Bulldogs as they take on Arkansas in a game that could have major implications for their postseason hopes. Let’s go Dawgs! #MarchMadness #Bracketology #GoDawgs
