The Phoenix had a franchise-record 116 points when they claimed a 36-point win over reigning champions Tasmania last Saturday.

There will be an added incentive going into Friday’s game with Phoenix the final team to have their Summer Shootout, with Cairns Taipans currently leading the race by 111 points.

John Rillie’s side had a disappointing double-overtime loss to the Taipans on Saturday night by nine-points.

Perth will regain Dylan Windler (eye) and Tai Webster (hamstring) for Friday nights game.

    KEEP AN EYE ON

Matt Kenyon was the defensive spark for Josh King’s side in Saturday’s win over the JackJumpers, minimising import Milton Doyle to 11 points and five turnovers, and will be sure to have the task on Cotton alongside the point guards.

  • Raleigh shootout | RPD releases 5-day report, revealing details of shooting in Raleigh neighborhood

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — The Raleigh Police Department released its five-day report on the deadly shootout in the Renaissance Park neighborhood.

On Tuesday, Jan. 21, 70-year-old Antonio Rodrigues fired at multiple RPD officers. He critically injured Officer Max Gillick, who is still in the hospital. According to the report, the officers fired back and killed Rodrigues. This shooting came after Rodrigues shot John Rowe who was at the house. Rowe was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

According to the report, five RPD officers discharged their weapons during the incident. The report lists their names as Captain B. Gartin, Lt. K. Smithey and Officers S. Henry, M. Batts, and T. Webb.

These officers have been placed on administrative leave which is standard procedure.

In all, 43 rounds were fired by RPD officers during the gunfire exchange with Rodrigues.

Body cameras were also worn by officers involved during the encounter, the report said, and captured the shooting. RPD will release agency recordings that capture the officer-involved shooting.

An eyewitness, who did not want to be identified, says she could hear through a shared wall the situation quickly escalating. The woman says she hid in a bathroom along with her dog as a series of shots were fired next door.

“It was a lot of yelling and then a few gunshots, and then it would be silence. And then that cycle kind of repeated itself,” the individual said. “Towards the end, I heard a countdown very clearly. The police counting down, and then a large crash and a lot of gunfire.”

    5-Day Report Timeline

    5:39 p.m.
Emergency Communications Center (ECC) received a 911 call reporting a “forcible entry at a residence” on Democracy Street.

The 911 caller said that the person she believed to be her ex-husband, Rodrigues, was forcing his way into her home. She told the 911 operator she had an active domestic violence protective order against him.

The suspect had tased her current boyfriend, Rowe, she said but the suspect had left her home and neither she nor her boyfriend needed medical attention.

    5:44 p.m.
While ECC was gathering information from the caller, she said the suspect had returned and was breaking the glass to enter through the back door. She confirmed the suspect was her ex-husband and he had a shotgun.

While she was still on the phone with 911, she reported Rodrigues shot Rowe.

    5:46 p.m.
On the way to the home, officers were told the suspect had reentered the home and shot someone inside.

    5:49 p.m.
Officers arrived at the home and heard gunfire coming from inside the house.

Shortly after this, the 911 caller ran outside and told an officer, “(her) boyfriend was dying on the floor.” She also confirmed the shots heard were coming from the back of her home.

    5:53 p.m.
Officers Gillick, M. Batts, Z. Kwiatkowski, K-9 Officer S. Henry and Sergeant E. Patton went to the back of the home. They found Rowe conscious and bleeding from his side on the kitchen floor.

Gillick stayed with Rowe, while the others conducted “a protective sweep of the residence to secure the scene for emergency medical personnel to enter and render aid.”

    5:56 p.m.
Officers opened the garage and found Rodrigues with a gun. They repetitively told him to drop the weapon and raise his hands.

Rodrigues shot multiple times at the officers. In return, Officer Henry fired back at him.

Officer Gillick requested additional assistance from law enforcement.

At the time, according to the report, it was believed that Officer Henry and/or Officer Batts had been shot. Sgt. Patton relayed over police radio at 5:57 P.M. that an officer had been shot.

    6:08 p.m.
During this time, Rodrigues fired shots from inside the garage and appeared, according to the report, to use a flare gun “in response to officers’ commands for him to drop his weapon and to surrender.”

    6:36 p.m.
An armored vehicle was used to breach the exterior garage door to the home.

Rodrigues then entered the home from the garage and fired at nearby officers, hitting Officer Gillick who was behind the screened patio area.

Officers then deployed flashbangs near the garage door. Captain Gartin, Lt. Smithey, and Officers Batts and Webb returned fire and killed Rodrigues.

Other officers were then able to carry Officer Gillick and Rowe out of the home.

    6:38 p.m.
Rowe and Gillick were then taken to a hospital for treatment.

Rodrigues was pronounced dead at the scene.

    Evidence Recovered

A Rossi .44 Magnum lever-action rifle was found near where Rodrigues was lying. A 9mm ghost gun along with ammunition was also found on Rodrigues’ waistband. According to the report, he was wearing a bandolier belt across his chest.

19 fired shell casings consistent with Rodrigues’ firearms were located at the scene:

    • 13 .44 Magnum shell casings were found in the garage
    • Three .44 Magnum shell casings and three 9mm shell casings were found inside the residence

A taser was found inside the home.

A flare gun and flare gun shell were found inside the garage

A cache of hand explosives was also later found in Rodrigues’ vehicle.

Expert weighs in on the shootout

Dr. Roy Taylor has more than four decades of law enforcement experience and offered his expertise on officers’ actions.

“What they did was legal. What they did was proper. What they did what was reasonable,” said Taylor.

He says EMS and police officers acted swiftly in a very dangerous, tense situation and the outcome could have been worse.

  • Raleigh woman speaks after ex-husband kills her partner, dies in police shootout :: WRAL.com

The ex-wife of a man accused of fatally shooting another man
and shooting a Raleigh police officer spoke Friday for the first time since she
    survived the ordeal.

Jill Rohner is the ex-wife of Antonio Rodrigues, who police
say broke into her home Tuesday night and killed John Rowe, 73. Then, Rodrigues
died in an exchange of gunfire with Raleigh police officers in Raleigh’s Renaissance
    Park neighborhood.

“I thought I was going to be dead, but he could have, he could have killed me,” Rohner said of Rodrigues.

Officer Max Gillick was hospitalized after Rodrigues shot him on Tuesday, police said. As of Friday, Gillick remains in critical condition at WakeMed.

Rohner said she heard a knock on the door of her home on Tuesday when a
man with a face covering held a bouquet of flowers.

“He [Rodrigues] had a big mask on his face and a hood, at
which point he just kind of plowed through the front door, and both John and I
were like, ‘Whoa … dude, what are you doing? Get out of here,’” Rohner said.

Rohner said Rodrigues shot Rowe after a struggle. Rohner said
she tried to drag Rowe out of the house as police officers started to arrive.

Police instructed Rohner to run toward them while she was wearing
    only socks. Eventually,

“I didn’t want to leave John [Rowe], but I did that,” Rohner
said. “I ran across the median.”

Kayla Biesaga, who lives across the street from Rowe, said
    her family provided
    Rohner shelter
while police and Rodrigues exchanged gunfire.

Rohner said she was in a relationship with Rowe.

“A couple years ago, [I] met this wonderful man, John Rowe,
who I have recently said to people, ‘It took me 67 years, but I finally got it
right [and] found the right person,’” Rohner said. “[I] was very much in love.”

    Court
    records show
Rohner had a restraining order against Rodrigues, who had
multiple convictions for stalking and harassing his ex-wife.

In 2014, Rohner and Rodrigues filed for divorce in Carteret
County. That same year he was convicted the first time for stalking. Rodrigues
was convicted again in 2023 for stalking and disclosing private images of
    Rohner.

“He did not take me asking him for a divorce well at all,”
Rohner said. “So, 11 years ago, he actually had a gun to my temple at one point
    back then.

WRAL Investigates found Rodrigues’ most recent addresses in
Carteret County and New Jersey, both of which were many miles from Rohner’s
    home in Raleigh.

“Basically, for 11 years, every year, I have refiled for a
domestic violence protective order,” Rohner said. “And almost every year that I
have done that, I have pleaded that he get serious help, mental health kind of
help because I suspected that he could snap at any minute.

“He was just constantly harassing me.”

The court records show Rodrigues was scheduled to go through
abuser treatment, get a mental health assessment and “have no contact with
    [Rohner].”

Rodrigues’ latest conviction came in 2024, which resulted in
probation with stipulations that he had to stay at least 300 yards away from
    Rohner.

The documents list the maximum punishment for the crimes as
about 17 years. Instead, a judge gave Rodrigues three years probation, which
    would’ve run through March 2026.

“There [were] felonies, then that got dropped for the
divorce purposes, in order for him to finally sign and let me be divorced,” Rohner
    said.

Rohner said Rowe was a retired family doctor who
    graduated from Yale.

According to Rohner, Rowe leaves behind kids and grandkids
    in Durham.

“He [was] a widow, so they lost their mother four years ago,
and they lost a sister a year before that, and now they’ve lost him, and it’s
just a mess,” Rohner said of Rowe’s family.

  • Antonio Rodrigues | Man killed in Raleigh police shootout was on probation for domestic violence-related charges

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — The man who police say shot and critically wounded a Raleigh police officer Monday night had a history of stalking, and the victim in those cases appears to be a woman who lived at the home where the shootout took place Monday.

Raleigh Police shot and killed 70-year-old Antonio Rodrigues Monday night after they say he started shooting at officers. It led to a tense situation in the Renaissance Park neighborhood, with neighbors being asked to shelter in place. 73-year-old John Rowe was also killed, but it’s unclear exactly how and what his relationship was to the situation.

    Rodrigues’ previous charges and convictions

Court documents obtained by ABC11 show that Rodrigues has convictions linked to incidents in 2014, 2021, and 2022.

    • He was convicted of felony stalking in Carteret County back in 2014.

    • He also pleaded guilty to several counts of stalking (both felony and misdemeanor) and disclosing private images in Wake County for incidents in 2021 and 2022.

    • He was convicted in March of 2023 and sentenced to 32 months of probation, meaning he was still on probation when the shootout took place Monday night.

The initial call Monday came in as a residential burglary, with police saying Rodrigues had a prior relationship with the woman who lived at the home where this was taking place.

The woman who owns the home is also listed as the victim in the incidents from 2021 and 2022. ABC11 is working to learn if she’s also the victim in the 2014 case.

The documents detail that Rodrigues sent multiple unwanted texts and calls to the victim, as well as sending private images of her to her place of employment. It appears that they were addressed to other people at the office, not the victim. The documents say that Rodrigues sent those photos “with the intent to coerce, harass, intimidate, demean, humiliate, or cause financial loss” to the victim. Under his plea agreement, the judgment against Rodrigues was classified as domestic violence.

The court also ordered Rodrigues not to have any contact with the victim, and to stay at least 300 yards away from her. It also ordered him to destroy all images he had of the victim and undergo an abuser treatment program.

  • Raleigh police officer shot, suspect dead after shootout in neighborhood south of downtown :: WRAL.com

A Raleigh police officer was shot in a residential neighborhood south of downtown Tuesday night. The suspect in the shooting is dead.

“Our officer suffered a serious gunshot wound in an exchange of shots with the suspect,” Raleigh Deputy Chief Rico Boyce said.

The identity of the officer and the circumstances of the shooting were not released.

Boyce did not saw what brought officers to Democracy Street in the Renaissance Park subdivision.

“This probably all started around 5:50,” Drew Duffy told WRAL News.

“The police are, wow, they’re flying down the highway right now,” he told WRAL’s Ashley Rowe in a phone conversation just after 6:30 p.m.

    “This is happening right now.”

Carlos Jenkins, who was out for a walk to get something to eat, told WRAL News he heard at least eight shots.

“I would describe it as like GTA (Grand Theft Auto, a videogame). You don’t ever see this many police out here,” Jenkins said.

As WRAL’s Shaun Gallagher reported from the scene, officers asked him to move back, to take shelter behind a police vehicle. Multiple shots could be heard as Gallagher explained the developing situation.

Boyce said as police surrounded the house, someone inside fired shots.

“Our officer suffered a serious gunshot wound. He is in the hospital at this time and needs your prayers,” he said.

An emergency alert issued to mobile phones in the area advised those in the area of Tryon Road and U.S. 70/401, “GO INSIDE & STAY INSIDE NOW.”

A caravan of police vehicles rolled out of the neighborhood just before 7 p.m., believed to be carrying the injured officer to a hospital. Within minutes, New Bern Avenue was closed between the exit from Interstate 440 and WakeMed in Raleigh. At least two ambulances arrived at the emergency department.

Just after 7:30 p.m., police issued an all clear for the Renaissance Park neighborhood.

  • U.S. Marshals Office K-9 to make full recovery following southwest Houston shootout, manhunt – Houston Public Media

    U.S. Marshal’s Office

A U.S. Marshals Office K-9, who found the accused killer of a law enforcement officer hiding in a dumpster Wednesday afternoon, was in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery after suffering several gunshot wounds during the incident, officials said.

K-9 Rocky was stabilized after being transported from the scene of the shooting Wednesday to Westbury Animal Hospital in southwest Houston. Vets performed surgery on the dog, who suffered two gunshot wounds to his neck and nose.

A bullet that entered K-9 Rocky’s neck narrowly missed the dog’s spine and vital organs, Dr. Jeff Chalkley said. Vets closed up wounds and put in drain tubes during the procedure Thursday. K-9 Rocky is eating, walking and expected to be released within the next 72 hours. Officials with the U.S. Marshals Office said the dog could return to service after making a full recovery.

“He is the luckiest dog I’ve seen,” Chalkley said. “That bullet could have ended his life instantly and it didn’t.”

“He is a hero, the dog is a hero,” he said.

Wednesday morning, local and state police launched a miles-long manhunt in southwest Houston for a man accused of shooting and killing Jesus Vargas, a 17-year veteran of the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office and member of the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force.

RELATED: Brazoria County deputy shot dead in southwest Houston, suspect killed in police shootout

Earlier that day, Vargas and another officer approached 56-year-old Robert Davis III, also known as Sean Christopher Davis, while serving an arrest warrant in a strip mall parking lot in the 9300 block of Stella Link Road. Vargas was shot and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The manhunt ensued for hours on Wednesday when officers and helicopters scoped out a stretch of southwest Houston in search of Davis.

The search came to a screeching halt when U.S. Marshals Office K9 Rocky alerted officers to a dumpster near the scene of the shooting. Officials confirmed in a press conference late Wednesday that the K9 was shot by Davis after jumping into the dumpster. Officers returned fire, striking and killing the man.

    U.S. Marshal’s Office

The dog was rushed to a helicopter in the parking lot and transported to a veterinarian clinic, where he remained in stable condition.

“The amazing aspect here people need to understand, the K9 saved lives,” T. Michael O’Connor, U.S. Marshal of the Southern District of Texas, said during a press conference in the lot late Wednesday.

The dog, a year-and-a-half old Belgian Malinois, was shot two times.

“They are part of our existence as a police department, as law enforcement in general, whether it be bombs, drugs, saving lives,” Houston Police Department Chief Noe Diaz said. “Those dogs are amazing. They are a part of us.”

The U.S. Marshals Office K-9 is set to make a full recovery following a tense shootout and manhunt in southwest Houston. The brave K-9 was injured in the line of duty while assisting marshals in apprehending a dangerous suspect.

Despite the harrowing ordeal, the K-9 is expected to fully recover thanks to the swift actions of medical personnel and the dedication of its handlers. The U.S. Marshals Office is grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and is relieved that their loyal K-9 partner will be back on duty soon.

This incident serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers, both human and K-9, in order to keep our communities safe. The U.S. Marshals Office is committed to ensuring the well-being of all their officers, including their four-legged partners, and will continue to work tirelessly to uphold justice and protect the public.

Canucks recover for shootout win against Kraken

Vince Dunn tied the game 3-3 with 53 seconds remaining in the third period for Seattle, sending a wrist shot from the left point through traffic and past Kevin Lankinen’s glove, forcing overtime.

Lankinen made 13 saves, plus three more in the shootout, in relief of Thatcher Demko, who stopped 11 of 12 shots before exiting with an injury at 7:49 of the second period, for the Canucks (18-11-8), who had lost their last two.

Matty Beniers scored for the third game in a row for the Kraken (17-20-2), who had won their previous two games, including a 5-4 comeback overtime win at the Canucks on Saturday. Philipp Grubauer made 19 saves.

Seattle rallied from down two goals in the third period after coming back from down three goals against Vancouver on Saturday.

Beniers cut it to 3-2 with a power-play goal at 9:05 of the third, one-timing a Shane Wright pass in the slot over Lankinen’s shoulder.

Dunn, who scored in overtime on Saturday, then tied it with Grubauer pulled for an extra attacker.

Chandler Stephenson gave the Kraken a 1-0 lead at 1:52 of the first period with a snap shot off a rush from the left circle that squeezed under Demko’s blocker.

Max Sasson tied it 1-1 at 13:17 when a Nils Hoglander shot from the top of the right circle got partially blocked and caromed off Danton Heinen’s skate to Sasson at the top of the crease. Sasson slapped it past Grubauer’s right pad.

Conor Garland gave Vancouver a 2-1 lead with a breakaway goal at 7:49 of the second period. Phillip Di Giuseppe found Garland with a stretch pass at the blue line, and he deked to his forehand and slipped the puck around Grubauer’s left skate.

Tyler Myers pushed it to 3-1 at 5:35 of the third period, taking a Miller feed at the top of the right circle and firing a wrist shot past Grubauer’s blocker.

In a thrilling matchup between the Vancouver Canucks and the Seattle Kraken, the Canucks managed to recover from a late deficit to secure a shootout victory. Despite falling behind early in the game, the Canucks showed resilience and determination as they fought back to tie the score in the third period.

The Kraken put up a strong fight, but the Canucks’ offense came alive in the final minutes of regulation to force overtime. Both teams battled hard in the extra period, but neither could find the back of the net, leading to a shootout to determine the winner.

In the shootout, the Canucks’ goaltender made a series of impressive saves to keep the Kraken at bay, while their shooters managed to find the back of the net to secure the victory. The Canucks’ fans erupted in cheer as their team celebrated a hard-fought win against their new Pacific Division rivals.

This thrilling victory serves as a testament to the Canucks’ resilience and determination, and sets the stage for an exciting season ahead. With a talented roster and a never-say-die attitude, the Canucks are poised to make a strong push for the playoffs this year.

Latvia stuns Canada in world junior hockey, winning 3-2 on lone shootout goal

OTTAWA, Ontario — Eriks Mateiko scored the lone goal of a shootout in the eighth round to give Latvia a 3-2 victory over Canada on Friday night in the world junior hockey championship.

Mateiko beat Jack Ivankovic to the blocker side to end the tiebreaker after the first 15 shooters failed to score.

“We found a way,” coach Artis Abols said after Latvia’s third victory in 38 games in the tournament. “In one hockey game, everything is possible.”

Mateiko and Peteris Bulans scored late power-play goals in the Group A game at Canadian Tire Centre. Mateiko tied it at 1 with 6:42 left and Bulans evened it at 2 with 2:29 to go.

“They battled,” Canadian coach Dave Cameron. “Credit to them.”

Linards Feldbergs stopped 55 shots for Latvia in its tournament opener.

“Crazy,” Feldbergs said. “Can’t believe what we did. I’m still in shock.”

Calum Ritchie and Jett Luchanko scored for Canada. Ivankovic made 24 saves.

Canada took a penalty for too many men on the ice in 3-on-3 overtime, but survived that short-handed situation to force the shootout.

“Devastating,” Canadian defenseman Tanner Molendyk said. “An eye-opener. It’s not one you want to lose, not one you see yourself losing.”

Ivankovic became the third 17-year-old goaltender to play for Canada at the under-20 tournament, and the first to start a game since Jimmy Waite in 1987.

In the other group A game, Finland beat Germany 3-1. Emil Pieniniemi, Arttu Alasiurua and Jesse Kiiskinen scored and Petteri Rimpinen made 31 saves to help Finland rebound from an opening 4-0 loss to Canada on Thursday night.

The defending champion United States opened Group A play Thursday night with a 10-4 victory over Germany. The Americans will face Latvia on Saturday.

In Group B at TD Place, Sweden routed Kazakhstan 8-1, and Slovakia edged Switzerland 2-1.

Anton Wahlberg scored one of Sweden’s five-period goals and had another in the second.

Victor Eklund, David Edstrom, Linus Eriksson, Felix Nilsson, Oskar Vuollet and David Granberg also scored and Marcus Gidlof made 15 saves for Sweden, coming off a 5-2 victory over Slovakia on Thursday in the its opener.

Jan Chovan broke a third-period tie for Slovakia.

Latvia stuns Canada with shootout win at World Juniors

Eriks Mateiko scored the only goal of the shootout as Latvia stunned an alarmingly uninspired Canada 3-2 at the world junior hockey championship Friday.

The forward moved in on his country’s eighth effort before firing home a goal to register one of the biggest upsets in tournament history.

Mateiko and Peteris Bulans scored in regulation for the hard-working Europeans in their first game of the 10-team showcase in the nation’s capital. Linards Feldbergs stopped 54 shots over 65 minutes. Bruno Osmanis had two assists.

Calum Ritchie and Jett Luchanko replied the tournament hosts, who are coming off a disappointing fifth-place finish last year in Sweden. Jack Ivankovic made 24 saves.

Canada, which is going for its 20th gold medal, entered with a 4-0 record and a combined 41-4 scoreboard edge all-time against Latvia at the event, including a 10-0 victory some 12 months ago.

After the Latvians tied the game 1-1 on a man advantage in the third period, Ritchie blasted a one-timer upstairs off an Easton Cowan feed.

But Canada’s Ethan Gauthier was whistled for hooking with just over three minutes to go and Bulans tied it on that power play with 2:29 left.

Canada took a penalty for too many men on the ice in 3-on-3 overtime, but survived that short-handed situation to force the shootout not many saw coming before the opening faceoff.

Ivankovic is just the third 17-year-old goaltender to play for Canada at the under-20 tournament, and the first to start a game since Jimmy Waite in 1987. Brian Finley got into a period of action at age 17 in 1999.

The goaltender from Mississauga, Ont., started in place of Carter George on the tail end of a back-to-back after he made 31 saves in a 4-0 victory over Finland in Thursday’s opener.

Hockey Canada’s brain trust led by Peter Anholt spoke before the tournament about how the group was much better prepared this time around following the disastrous performance in Gothenburg that saw the powerhouse bounced by Czechia in the quarterfinals.

The coaching staff led by Dave Cameron was in place early, while the program also held a summer camp and hired a full-time scout.

The management team insisted all the pieces were in place. There were, in short, no excuses.

Canada, however, didn’t have many answers against one of the sport’s minnows on Friday despite dressing 11 first-round NHL picks and three other players expected to go high at the next two drafts.

A disjointed performance in the opening 20 minutes was marked by an injury to star defenceman Matthew Schaefer — a 17-year-old potential top pick at the 2025 NHL draft — after he crashed into the Latvian net on a power play off the rush.

Ivankovic had to be sharp on a couple of penalty kills and another chance in alone off the stick of Olivers Murnieks.

Things didn’t improve much from there.

Canada did get on the board 3:28 into the middle period when Luchanko stole a puck on a penalty kill and scored on a breakaway after Feldbergs decided to stay in his crease.

The Canadians, 0-for-3 on the power play against Finland, dropped to 0-for-6 later in the period after two largely lifeless man advantages.

With his team seemingly content to stay on the outside and not challenge the Latvians for the middle of the ice — an unfortunate hallmark of the country’s 2024 iteration — Cameron lit into his players on the bench late in the period.

The crowd at Canadian Tire Centre tried to lift the country’s teenagers midway through the third period, but the group continued to search for answers that simply weren’t there to be found.

Canadian defenceman Andrew Gibson then took an elbowing penalty to set up Mateiko’s equalizer with 6:42 left in regulation before Ritchie and Mateiko traded goals late.

    YOUNG GUNS

Cameron said before the game Canada’s trio of 17 year olds — Gavin McKenna, Ivankovic and Schaefer aren’t getting special age-related treatment.

“If we thought they needed any special service, they probably wouldn’t belong on the team,” said Cameron, in charge of the world junior bench for a third time. “We don’t want any additional obstacles like having to pamper guys through scenarios. We’ve got enough work to do as it is.

“As much as they’re young, they’re mature.”

    FAMILIAR FACES

Canadian forward Berkly Catton and defenceman Caden Price were neighbours growing up in Saskatoon, while captain Brayden Yager’s family moved to the city from Prince Albert, Sask., when he was 11.

“We all dreamt about this,” Catton said. “We’re just living and enjoying it.”

Eriks Mateiko scored the game winner in the 8th round of a penalty-shot shootout to give Latvia a 3-2 win over Canada, its first-ever win at the World Juniors.

Captain Peteris Bulans had tied the game 2-2 at 17:31 of the third with a wicked point shot on the power play, capping a three-power-play goal frenzy that saw the underdogs work their way back into the game.

Calum Ritchie’s bullet shot on the power play at 14:22 of the third had given Canada a 2-1 lead, and Latvia had tied the game, 1-1, just a minute earlier on its own man advantage. Bruno Osmanis fed a beautiful pass to Eriks Mateiko, and he redirected the puck into the open net, sending the Latvian bench into celebration. Never before have they been in such a close game with Canada at the World Juniors.

Canada drops to 1-1 in Group A in Ottawa as the World Junior Championship wraps up play on day two. Latvia was playing their first game and will have a chance to upset another favourite tomorrow night in a tough battle with the United States.

The Canadians now have a day off before playing Germany on Sunday.

Latvia’s roster features no fewer than four players born in 2008 (when the majority World Juniors are born 2005 or 2006)—Olivers Murnieks, Martins Klaucans, Rudolfs Berzkalns, and Roberts Naudins. Murnieks had perhaps the best chance of the opening period, barrelling in on goal and forcing Jack Ivankovic to make a nice save.

Beyond that, it was a tepid and uneventful 20 minutes, Canada’s dip in play perhaps the result of relishing for too long their impressive and important 4-0 shutout of Finland last night.

Canada opened the scoring early in the third with a short-handed goal that was strange, to say the least. The Cannadians cleared the puck down the ice, but as Jett Luchanko raced hard to chase it down Latvian goalie Linards Feldbergs stayed in his crease. Luchanko got to the puck, made a move, and slid the puck in at 3:28.

The goal was reminiscent of Akil Thomas’s game winner at the 2020 World Juniors when Russian goalie Amir Miftakhov seemed similarly glued to his crease.

Despite that gaffe, Feldbergs was in the zone all night, stopping everything Canada threw at him. The Latvians showed little offensive ability, but Feldbergs kept the score close.

In a thrilling match-up at the IIHF World Championship, Latvia pulled off a stunning upset by defeating Canada in a shootout. The game was a back-and-forth battle, with both teams trading goals throughout regulation and overtime.

Latvia’s goaltender stood tall, making crucial saves to keep his team in the game. The shootout was intense, with Latvia’s shooters showcasing their skills and ultimately securing the victory.

This victory marks a historic moment for Latvia, as they have rarely defeated powerhouse teams like Canada in international competition. The win will surely boost their confidence and serve as a reminder that anything is possible in the world of hockey.
