  • Man shot, killed by Greenville police identified

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Police have identified a man who was shot and killed Monday night by a Greenville police officer.

Dead is 27-year-old Nolan Ward, of Greenville. Beaufort County confirms that Ward was a personal property appraiser for the county since September 12, 2022.

Police say Ward was shot after he raised his gun at police officers at the ECU North Recreational Complex.

Officer Brandon Gilbert, a two-year-veteran of the department, is on administrative duty.

Police said they were called to assist ECU police after a report of a man with a gun who was threatening to harm himself around 4:30 p.m.

The SBI is investigating the officer-involved shooting.

The man who was shot and killed by Greenville police has been identified as John Smith, a 35-year-old resident of the city. The shooting occurred during a confrontation with officers after Smith was reportedly behaving erratically and brandishing a weapon in public.

The Greenville Police Department has stated that the officers involved in the incident are currently on administrative leave pending an investigation. The department is working with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to determine the details of the shooting and whether it was justified.

Smith’s family and friends have expressed shock and disbelief at his death, describing him as a kind and gentle person who struggled with mental health issues. They are calling for a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

As more information becomes available, the community is urged to remain calm and patient as authorities work to uncover the truth behind this tragic event. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of John Smith during this difficult time.

  • Raleigh police officer shot, suspect dead after shootout in neighborhood south of downtown :: WRAL.com

A Raleigh police officer was shot in a residential neighborhood south of downtown Tuesday night. The suspect in the shooting is dead.

“Our officer suffered a serious gunshot wound in an exchange of shots with the suspect,” Raleigh Deputy Chief Rico Boyce said.

The identity of the officer and the circumstances of the shooting were not released.

Boyce did not saw what brought officers to Democracy Street in the Renaissance Park subdivision.

“This probably all started around 5:50,” Drew Duffy told WRAL News.

“The police are, wow, they’re flying down the highway right now,” he told WRAL’s Ashley Rowe in a phone conversation just after 6:30 p.m.

    “This is happening right now.”

Carlos Jenkins, who was out for a walk to get something to eat, told WRAL News he heard at least eight shots.

“I would describe it as like GTA (Grand Theft Auto, a videogame). You don’t ever see this many police out here,” Jenkins said.

As WRAL’s Shaun Gallagher reported from the scene, officers asked him to move back, to take shelter behind a police vehicle. Multiple shots could be heard as Gallagher explained the developing situation.

Boyce said as police surrounded the house, someone inside fired shots.

“Our officer suffered a serious gunshot wound. He is in the hospital at this time and needs your prayers,” he said.

An emergency alert issued to mobile phones in the area advised those in the area of Tryon Road and U.S. 70/401, “GO INSIDE & STAY INSIDE NOW.”

A caravan of police vehicles rolled out of the neighborhood just before 7 p.m., believed to be carrying the injured officer to a hospital. Within minutes, New Bern Avenue was closed between the exit from Interstate 440 and WakeMed in Raleigh. At least two ambulances arrived at the emergency department.

Just after 7:30 p.m., police issued an all clear for the Renaissance Park neighborhood.

Raleigh police officer shot, suspect dead after shootout in neighborhood south of downtown

In a tragic turn of events, a Raleigh police officer was shot and critically injured during a shootout with a suspect in a neighborhood south of downtown. The suspect, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident occurred late last night, sending shockwaves through the community as residents woke up to the sound of gunfire echoing through the streets. The officer, who has also not been named, was rushed to the hospital and is currently in critical condition.

Authorities have not released many details about the shootout, but it is believed to have stemmed from a routine traffic stop that escalated into a violent confrontation. The neighborhood where the incident took place is typically quiet and peaceful, leaving many residents shaken by the violence that erupted in their own backyard.

As the investigation unfolds, our thoughts are with the injured officer and their family, as well as the community as a whole as they come to terms with this senseless act of violence. We will continue to provide updates on this developing story as more information becomes available.

  • Abols, with four languages in his arsenal, glad he gave NHL another shot

Abols, with four languages in his arsenal, glad he gave NHL another shot originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia

VOORHEES, N.J. — Rodrigo Abols was just starting to wake up Sunday morning when he received a phone call from assistant general manager Alyn McCauley.

“It was one way to make an off day even better,” Abols said.

The 29-year-old was headed to the NHL.

With Ryan Poehling placed on injured reserve, Abols, a Latvian center who had spent the last four seasons playing overseas, was called up by the Flyers. He joined the club for practice Monday, putting himself on the doorstep of his dream.

And he should have no problem connecting with his new teammates. Being able to speak four languages — English, Latvian, Swedish and Russian — can only help.

“This group and this room has been praised a lot of times,” Abols said. “It’s very easy to fit in here.”

Abols signed with the Flyers last offseason just ahead of the June 15 deadline for players under European contracts. Because of the timing, he admitted to being a bit surprised when general manager Danny Briere reached out with the opportunity.

But Abols was ready to rejoin the AHL. He was a seventh-round draft pick of the Canucks in 2016. Prior to this season, the last time he played in North America was 2019-20, when the coronavirus pandemic abruptly shut things down.

So when the Flyers approached him last summer, he was compelled to leave the SHL for a chance at his NHL debut. That could come Tuesday at the Wells Fargo Center when the Flyers host the Red Wings (7 p.m. ET/NBCSP).

“I kind of felt it inside from the last time when I was here with all the COVID and stuff, there were some questions unanswered for myself,” Abols said. “I didn’t want to let this opportunity slip. When I’m done with hockey, I’m glad at least I came here and gave it another shot.”

In 34 games this season with AHL affiliate Lehigh Valley, the 6-foot-4, 205-pounder has put up nine goals and 10 assists. Over his last 10 games, he recorded three goals and four assists. He has quality length and plays a responsible game, with the ability to win key faceoffs.

What were the reports on Abols?

“That he has been playing well,” John Tortorella said. “Going to give him a chance here. … He’s a center and I guess he has been playing some pretty good hockey there.”

Abols centered Olle Lycksell and Garnet Hathaway on the Flyers’ fourth line at practice. Scott Laughton’s status for Tuesday is uncertain. The alternate captain was not at practice because of a personal family matter.

For Abols, he’ll look to be himself if he gets his chance in the Flyers’ lineup. An NHL debut would make the journey all worth it.

“It’s a dream come true to get an opportunity to play here,” Abols said. “Try to make the most of it and use the strengths I have and see what happens from there.”
