  • You Get Used To Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’s Animation, And The Show’s Good

I did not really know what to expect from Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man in the wake of the hard-to-surpass X-Men 97 and the not-that-good What If…? which just ended its three season run. All you could really take away from the previews was just how…weird it looked, with its animation style that was somehow both flat and 3D at the same time, with an off-puttingly low framerate on top of that.

Having watched the first two episodes this week now, I can say that yes, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is a very good series. And it is a very good series where you you will actually get used to that animation very quickly, and it’s just not distracting the way you might imagine it would be. In fact, the show has really cool action sequences, and it uses this comic-ish look to really lean into that concept, occasionally breaking up into actual panels. I mean, it’s not my favorite art style ever, certainly, but it does work, and if you don’t like it, you will sort of just forget about it in time.

No, I am not going to compare this to the sky-high quality of X-Men 97, but Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is very charming, and I actually laughed out loud in a few instances. After seeing Spider-Man fight literal space gods and multiversal villains recently, it’s nice to see an action sequence where he fights a villain in a pet shop and bumbles around trying to save corgis and fish from danger.

The show does mostly skip Peter’s Spidey origin, altering it to him being bit by a spider that drops through a (spoilers) Doctor Strange portal, likely alien in origin (Strange is fighting a symbiote, after all). We skip ahead to the early days of Spiderdom where Pete has a goofy but endearing suit with a web tank on his back and actual tubes leading into his arm shooters. Yes, they get caught on things. This show does great with details.

The cast is another aspect I found interesting, with Pete paired with Nico, a different best-friend figure than we’ve normally seen. He has a different crush, her different “bully” boyfriend that turns out to immediately be a really cool dude, flipping some tropes on their head. There are also clearly going to be a wide array of Marvel characters brought in here. We open with Strange. Daredevil is promised. Peter is currently working with future Hulk Amadeus Cho. I’m sure a lot will happen in these ten episodes, airing over just four weeks.

You can’t expect X-Men 97 here, but if you’re off-put by its previews, if you’re a Spider-fan I would definitely watch it as it’s genuinely hard not to like, and the animation isn’t as much of a roadblock as you might imagine.

Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram.

Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy.

If you’re a fan of the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, then chances are you’ve probably watched the animated series featuring everyone’s favorite web-slinger. At first, the animation style might seem a bit different from what you’re used to, especially if you’re more familiar with the live-action Spider-Man movies. But trust me, you’ll quickly get used to it and come to appreciate the unique look and feel of the show.

The animation in the Spider-Man animated series is actually quite good once you give it a chance. The character designs are sleek and dynamic, the action sequences are exciting and well-choreographed, and the overall aesthetic captures the comic book vibe of the Spider-Man universe perfectly. Plus, seeing Spidey swing through the city and battle villains in animated form is just plain cool.

As you continue to watch the show, you’ll start to appreciate the attention to detail in the animation, from the way Spider-Man moves and swings through the city to the expressions on the characters’ faces during intense moments. You’ll find yourself getting more and more immersed in the world of Spider-Man and rooting for him as he faces off against his enemies and strives to protect the city.

So don’t let the animation style of the Spider-Man animated series throw you off at first. Give it a chance, and you’ll soon find yourself getting used to it and enjoying the show for what it is – a fun, action-packed adventure starring everyone’s favorite web-slinger. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

  • Video shows ‘frightened’ Israeli hostage Arbel Yehoud being handed over to Red Cross by Hamas | World News

    Jan 30, 2025 04:59 PM IST

Hamas militants released two hostages, including Israeli soldier Agam Berger, amid a Gaza ceasefire. Israel is set to free 110 Palestinian prisoners.

Hamas-led militants freed two of eight hostages on Thursday in the latest release since a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip took hold earlier this month. Israel was expected to release another 110 Palestinian prisoners.

Hamas handed female Israeli soldier Agam Berger, 20, to the Red Cross after parading her in front of a crowd in the heavily destroyed urban refugee camp of Jabaliya in northern Gaza. The Israeli government later confirmed that Berger was with its forces.

The other Israel who was released on Thursday is Arbel Yehoud, 29. Five Thai nationals were also expected to be freed, but have not been officially identified.

Footage shows hostage Arbel Yehoud being transferred to the Red Cross by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, reported The Times of Israel.

The video captures Yehoud being escorted through a dense crowd of Palestinians and armed militants near the ruins of former Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar’s residence.

She appears visibly shaken as she and the gunmen struggle through the chaotic scene, pushing through the crowd to reach the waiting Red Cross vehicle.

Recently, a video has surfaced showing the moment when Israeli hostage Arbel Yehoud was handed over to the Red Cross by Hamas. The video depicts a visibly frightened Yehoud being escorted by Hamas members to the Red Cross representatives, who were waiting to receive him.

Yehoud, who had been held captive by Hamas for several weeks, appeared to be in a state of distress as he was handed over to the Red Cross. The video has sparked outrage and concern for his well-being, with many calling for his immediate release and safe return to Israel.

The Israeli government has condemned Hamas for their actions and has called for Yehoud to be released unharmed. The Red Cross has stated that they will provide Yehoud with the necessary medical and psychological support to ensure his well-being.

As the situation continues to unfold, the world watches anxiously for updates on Yehoud’s condition and hopes for a swift and safe resolution to this troubling ordeal.

  • With leaked footage from the inside, Sundance doc shows horrifying conditions in Alabama prisons

PARK CITY, Utah (AP) — Incarcerated men in the Alabama prison system risked their safety to feed shocking footage of their horrifying living conditions to a pair of documentary filmmakers. The result is “The Alabama Solution,” which premiered this week at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City.

Filmmakers Andrew Jarecki and Charlotte Kaufman became interested in Alabama prisons in 2019. Jarecki, the filmmaker behind “The Jinx” and “Capturing the Friedmans,” and Kaufman first gained access to the restricted grounds through a visit with a chaplain during a revival meeting held in the prison yards. There men pulled them aside and whispered shocking stories about the reality of life inside: forced labor, drugs, violence, intimidation, retaliation and the undisclosed truths behind many prisoner deaths.

The Associated Press has written extensively about the problems in the state’s prison system, including high rates of violence, low staffing, a plummeting parole rate and the use of pandemic funds to build a new supersized prison.

This process eventually led them to incarcerated activists Melvin Ray and Robert Earl Council (also known as “Kinetik Justice”) who had for years been trying to expose the horrifying conditions and deep- seated corruption across the system. They helped feed dispatches to the filmmakers with contraband cellphones.

“We’re deeply concerned for their safety, and we have been since the first time we met them,” said Kaufman. “They’ve been doing this work for decades and as you see in the film, they’ve been retaliated against in very extreme ways. But there are lawyers who are ready to do wellness checks and visit them and respond to any sort of retaliation that may come.”

On Tuesday at the first showing of the film, she had Council on the phone listening in. They put the microphone up to the cellphone so that Council could speak.

“We thank you all for listening, for being interested,” Council said. “On behalf of the brothers of Alabama, I thank you all.”

Several family members of their incarcerated subjects were also in the audience, including Sandy Ray, the mother of Steven Davis, who died in 2019 at William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility, his face beaten beyond recognition. Prison officials said Davis was killed in self-defense because he didn’t put down his weapons. The prisoners tell a vastly different story.

Alelur “Alex” Duran, who spent 12 years in prison in New York, also helped produce the film. Jarecki said they wouldn’t have taken on the subject without the expertise of someone who had been incarcerated.

“What you’re seeing in this film is going on all over the nation,” Duran said.

Also embedded in the story is Alabama’s long history of contracting prisoners to do work at private companies from Burger King to Best Western, an issue that the AP investigated for over two years. The cheap, reliable labor force has generated more than $250 million for the state since 2000 — money garnished from prisoners’ paychecks, the AP wrote in December. Parole numbers have also plummeted in recent years.

“We want to show viewers the truth about a system that has been cloaked in secrecy,” Jarecki said. “We hope the film sparks an effort to allow access for journalists and others so the public can have transparency into how incarcerated citizens are treated and how our tax dollars are being spent. We hope to inspire Alabama’s leadership to acknowledge the crisis and to overhaul its prison system and its use of forced labor.”

The film will have a theatrical release before it debuts on HBO sometime this year, but the specific dates and details are still being worked out. And while it is in its early days, the impact, Jarecki said, has already been seen, including in a class action labor lawsuit.

The recent release of leaked footage from inside Alabama prisons has shed light on the horrifying conditions that inmates are subjected to on a daily basis. A new documentary set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, titled “Inside Alabama Prisons,” captures the reality of life behind bars in the state’s correctional facilities.

The footage, obtained by undercover journalists, shows overcrowded cells, unsanitary living conditions, and widespread violence among inmates. In one particularly disturbing scene, a guard is seen brutally beating a handcuffed prisoner, highlighting the systemic issues of abuse and neglect within the prison system.

The documentary aims to expose the harsh realities of life for inmates in Alabama prisons and spark a conversation about the urgent need for reform. Director Sarah Johnson hopes that by bringing these shocking images to light, viewers will be inspired to take action and advocate for change in the criminal justice system.

As the film makes its debut at Sundance, it serves as a stark reminder of the inhumane treatment that many inmates endure behind bars. It is a call to action for all to stand up against the injustices within the prison system and fight for the rights and dignity of those who are incarcerated.

  • Poll shows bipartisan consensus on child care in Ohio as lawmakers consider funding changes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Republicans, Democrats and independent voters overwhelmingly believe the state should increase funding for child care for working parents, a new poll shows, potentially buoying the chances that daycare-related legislation passes in the General Assembly.

According to the December poll conducted by Alexandria, Virginia-based Public Opinion Strategies on behalf of Groundwork Ohio, which advocates for expanding child care access, 84% of voters want state funding for child care “to increase access, affordability and quality.”

Of the 800 Ohio voters surveyed, 77% of Republicans supported state funding; 92% of Democrats supported it and 84% of independents supported it. It comes as not only child advocates, but also business groups such as the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, are concerned that the cost and availability of good programs is keeping many parents out of the workforce, which stalls the state’s economy.

The number of available workers and inflation’s costs for child care businesses have worsened child care availability since the COVID-19 pandemic.

In previous legislative sessions, state lawmakers introduced virtually no bills to address child care. But the last two-year session, which ended in December, saw several, including offering refundable and non-refundable tax credits for families; a tax credit for employers who help pay their workers’ child care costs; more publicly funded child care; universal preschool and full-day kindergarten; and free child care benefits for child care workers. But none made it across the finish line.

Three bills have been introduced already to start the new session, signaling that lawmakers understand the issue is not going away.

Last year, Gov. Mike DeWine increased state vouchers for publicly funded daycare for about 8,000 more children. Yet, the new poll for Groundwork Ohio found that voters have an appetite for more programs – from tax credits to more subsidies.

Among the 800 voters who were surveyed, 484 had children aged five and younger. About a third of those respondents or their partners said they stayed at home with children. Some of them, however, wished to enter the workforce to provide money for their families, said Jarrett Lewis, a partner for the pollster, who explained the poll on a webinar Tuesday morning.

About six in 10 women who stayed at home part-time or full-time said they would return to the workforce if they had access to high-quality child care at a reasonable cost. And half of working parents said that they had to cut back in their working hours to care for their children in recent months, Lewis said.

“This has an undeniable impact on the state’s economy,” he said. “Ohio voters in this poll, you’ll see data that they agree that labor shortages in the state are in part due to a lack of access to high-quality child care. In light of this, Ohio voters very much, very strongly support increasing funding for child care in order to increase access, affordability and quality. That support, importantly, extends across party lines.”

Among the bills introduced thus far in the Ohio General Assembly are House Bill 2 and Senate Bill 32, similar though not identical bills that would create voluntary programs for employers to participate in, in which child care expenses would be covered in three equal parts by the state, the employer and the employee. The employer could choose to pay a portion or all of the worker’s share as well.

Both bills would send up to $10 million to the Ohio Department of Children and Youth to cover the program and the state’s share. HB 2 and SB 32 are sponsored by Republicans. GOP-sponsored bills generally have a better chance of passing since both chambers of the legislature are controlled by Republicans.

The third bill, House Bill 7, is also GOP-sponsored. It would allow foster families and kinship caregivers – family and extended family members who take children in if the parents are unable to care for them – eligible for publicly funded child care and preschool.

At the federal level, families can claim the Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit on their federal returns, which is $600 per dependent child, said Brittany Boulton, Groundwork Ohio’s vice president.

“That $600 per child is currently up for debate in Congress, so that’s a federal concern,” she said.

In our Rethinking Child care series, cleveland.com and the Plain Dealer are examining the expense and difficulty of finding quality child care and proposing solutions to share families’ burdens — and help our economy.

Laura Hancock covers state government and politics for The Plain Dealer and cleveland.com.

A recent poll conducted in Ohio has revealed a surprising bipartisan consensus on the importance of child care in the state. The poll, which surveyed a diverse group of Ohio residents, found that an overwhelming majority of both Democrats and Republicans believe that access to affordable, high-quality child care is crucial for working families.

The results of the poll come at a pivotal time for child care funding in Ohio, as lawmakers are currently considering changes to the state’s child care subsidy program. Advocates for child care reform are hopeful that the bipartisan support shown in the poll will encourage lawmakers to prioritize funding for child care programs that benefit working families.

According to the poll, 87% of Ohio residents believe that access to affordable child care is important for working families, with 74% saying that the state should invest more in child care programs. Additionally, 82% of respondents said that they would be more likely to support a candidate who prioritizes funding for child care.

The poll also found that Ohio residents are in favor of specific policy changes, such as increasing the income eligibility limit for child care subsidies and providing more funding for early childhood education programs.

Overall, the poll results indicate a strong bipartisan consensus on the need for increased investment in child care in Ohio. Lawmakers will now have the opportunity to listen to their constituents and make funding decisions that will benefit working families across the state.

    O.J. Simpson
    See His Deathbed …
    1st Look Inside Vegas House

    Published

Recently, a first look inside O.J. Simpson’s house has revealed the shocking state of his deathbed before it is set to be auctioned off. The once luxurious home of the former NFL star has now fallen into disrepair, with the deathbed being a haunting reminder of the infamous murder trial that captivated the nation.

The images show a grim scene, with the bed where Simpson’s ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson was brutally murdered in 1994 still intact. The bloodstains have long been covered up, but the eerie presence of the bed remains.

The rest of the house is also in a state of disarray, with furniture scattered and debris covering the floors. It is clear that the once grand estate has seen better days.

As the house is set to be auctioned off, it raises questions about who would want to purchase such a notorious property. Will the new owners be able to erase the dark history that lingers within its walls, or will the specter of O.J. Simpson’s past continue to haunt the house?

Regardless of the outcome, the first look inside O.J. Simpson’s house serves as a chilling reminder of the tragic events that unfolded there decades ago.

  • DeepSeek Shows Meta’s A.I. Strategy Is Working

When a small Chinese company called DeepSeek revealed that it had created an A.I. system that could match leading A.I. products made in the United States, the news was greeted in many circles as a warning that China was closing the gap in the global race to build artificial intelligence.

DeepSeek also said it built its new A.I. technology more cost effectively and with fewer hard-to-get computers chips than its American competitors, shocking an industry that had come to believe that bigger and better A.I. would cost billions and billions of dollars.

But A.I. experts inside the tech giant Meta saw DeepSeek’s breakthrough as something more than the arrival of a nimble, new competitor from the other side of the world: It was vindication that an unconventional decision Meta made nearly two years ago was the right call.

In 2023, Meta, in a widely criticized move, gave away its cutting-edge A.I. technology after spending millions to build it. DeepSeek used parts of that technology as well as other A.I. tools freely available on the internet through a software development method called open source.

Meta executives believe DeepSeek’s breakthrough shows that upstarts now have a chance to innovate and compete with the tech giants that have mostly had the A.I. playing field to themselves because A.I. costs so much to build. It was something Meta executives hoped would happen when they gave away their own technology.

“Our open source strategy was validated,” said Ragavan Srinivasan, a Meta vice president, in an interview on Tuesday. “The more people who have access to the technology needed to move things forward faster, the better.”

Meta is also taking a close look at the work done at DeepSeek. Following Meta’s lead, the Chinese company released its technology to the open source tech community as well. Meta has created several “war rooms” where employees are reverse engineering DeepSeek’s technology, according to two people familiar with the effort who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The Meta employees are looking for ways to lower the cost of training its software — a term used to to describe the way A.I. technologies learn from data — and apply it to Meta’s own A.I. The Information earlier reported on the war rooms.

Before Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, gave away its A.I. tech, the company had been focused on projects like virtual reality. It was caught flat-footed when OpenAI introduced the chatbot ChatGPT in late 2022. Other tech giants like Microsoft, OpenAI’s close partner, and Google were also well ahead in their A.I. efforts.

(The New York Times has sued OpenAI and its partner, Microsoft, claiming copyright infringement of news content related to A.I. systems. The two tech companies have denied the suit’s claims.)

By freely sharing the code that drove its A.I. technology, called Llama, Meta hoped to accelerate the development of its technology and attract others to build on top of it. Meta engineers believed that A.I. experts working collaboratively could make more progress than teams of experts siloed inside companies, as they were at OpenAI and the other tech giants.

Meta could afford to do this. It made money by selling online ads, not A.I. software. By accelerating the development of the A.I. it offered to consumers for free, it could bring more attention to online services like Facebook and Instagram — and sell more ads.

“They were the only major U.S. company to take this approach. And it was easier for them to do this — more defensible,” said Chris V. Nicholson, an investor with the venture capital firm Page One Ventures, who focuses on A.I. technologies. Meta can offer A.I. below the cost to build it — or even give it away — to attract customers and increase sales of other services, he added.

Many in Silicon Valley said Meta’s move set a dangerous precedent because the chatbots could help spread disinformation, hate speech and other toxic content. But Meta said that any risks were far outweighed by the benefits of open source. And most A.I. development, they added, had been shared around through open source until ChatGPT made companies leery of showing what they working on.

Now, if DeepSeek’s work can be replicated — particularly its claim that it was able to build its A.I. more affordably than most had thought possible — that could provide more opportunities for more companies to expand on what Meta did.

“These dynamics are invisible to the U.S. consumer,” said Mr. Nicholson. “But they are hugely important.”

Yann LeCun, an early A.I. pioneer who is Meta’s chief A.I. scientist, said in a post on LinkedIn that people who think the takeaway from DeepMind’s work should be that China is beating the United States at A.I. development are misreading the situation. “The correct reading is: ‘Open source models are surpassing proprietary ones,’” he said.

Dr. LeCun added that “because their work is published and open source, everyone can profit from it. That is the power of open research.”

By last summer, many Chinese companies had followed Meta’s lead, regularly open sourcing their own work. Those companies included DeepSeek, which was created by a quantitative trading firm called High-Flyer.

Some Chinese companies offered “fine-tuned” versions of technology open sourced by companies from other countries, like Meta. But others, such as the start-up 01.AI, founded by a well-known investor and technologist named Kai-Fu Lee, used parts of Meta’s code to build more powerful technologies.

U.S. tech experts still argue that U.S. companies like Meta should not be open sourcing their technologies because they were fueling A.I. in China. But others say that if American companies stopped freely providing their technology, the epicenter of open source development would simply shift to China anyway.

Earlier this year, students at the University of California, Berkeley built an A.I. system that in many ways rivaled the performance of OpenAI’s latest system. They did this by building on top of two open-source technologies released by the Chinese tech giant Alibaba.

“When you are in a race to build technology, the best way to compete is to share code, strengthen the foundation and accelerate the rate of progress,” said Clément Delangue, chief executive of Hugging Face, a company that hosts many of the world’s open-source A.I. projects.

Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has been making significant strides in the field of artificial intelligence with its latest product, DeepSeek. This cutting-edge technology has shown that Meta’s A.I. strategy is not only working but thriving.

DeepSeek is a powerful tool that uses advanced machine learning algorithms to analyze and categorize vast amounts of data in real-time. This allows Meta to provide users with more personalized and relevant content, ultimately enhancing the user experience.

The success of DeepSeek is a testament to Meta’s commitment to investing in artificial intelligence and leveraging it to create innovative products. By harnessing the power of A.I., Meta is able to stay ahead of the curve and continue to evolve in an ever-changing digital landscape.

With DeepSeek, Meta has demonstrated that its A.I. strategy is not only effective but also essential for staying competitive in today’s tech-driven world. As the company continues to push the boundaries of what is possible with artificial intelligence, we can expect even more exciting developments in the future.

  • The evidence that shows Rwanda is backing M23 rebels

Protesters in Kinshasa, the capital of Democratic Republic of Congo, have been burning portraits of Rwanda’s president and tearing up Rwandan flags as M23 rebels have taken control of most the eastern city of Goma.

Their fury is focused on Rwandan President Paul Kagame, who they accuse of backing the rebels – an accusation long made by the UN.

To put it bluntly, a group of UN experts maintains the Rwandan army is in “de facto control of M23 operations”, detailing how M23 recruits are trained under Rwandan supervision and supported by high-tech Rwandan weaponry.

Goma, which lies at the foot of a volcano near Lake Kivu, sits on the border with Rwanda. It is the capital of mineral-rich North Kivu province – and is an important trading and humanitarian hub and the base for the UN’s largest peacekeeping mission.

The city had also become a refuge for those fleeing the conflict between M23 fighters and the army that erupted again in late 2021 – with the population swelling to around two million.

They all face further turmoil as fighting erupted there on Sunday night with loud explosions echoing through the streets, which are now strewn with bodies. The exact circumstances of what is going on is unclear as phone lines are down and electricity and water supplies have been cut off. But the M23 seem to have captured most, if not all, of the city.

“There was no question that there are Rwandan troops in Goma supporting the M23,” said UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix, though he added that it was it was difficult to tell the exact numbers on the ground in Goma.

Tellingly some Congolese army soldiers in Goma who surrendered on Monday, did so by crossing over the border into Rwanda.

Since the conflict begun, President Kagame has repeatedly denied any involvement in supporting the M23 rebels, who are well equipped, well armed and well trained.

The M23 says it is a Congolese rebel group defending DR Congo’s Tutsi community

However, this response has noticeably shifted as accusations continue to grow with “overwhelming evidence” showing Rwanda’s support for the rebel group, according to Richard Moncrief, International Crisis Group’s project director for the Great Lakes

“The tone has changed to justification for defensive measures,” he told the BBC. “It has become harder to deny Rwanda’s support for M23.”

On Sunday, Rwanda’s foreign ministry said in a statement: “This fighting close to the Rwandan border continues to present a serious threat to Rwanda’s security and territorial integrity, and necessitates Rwanda’s sustained defensive posture.”

It said it was concerned by “misguided or manipulative” statements that lacked context about the conflict.

For Kagame, the context all comes down to the Rwandan genocide that took place over 100 days in 1994.

The ethnic Hutu militia involved in killing up to 800,000 people – the vast majority from the Tutsi community – fled to what is now DR Congo, some forming the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR).

This rebel group is still active in the notoriously unstable eastern DR Congo – and still includes some of those responsible for the genocide.

Kagame, who headed the rebel Tutsi force that ended the killing more than three decades ago, sees this “genocidal militia” as an existential threat.

His government has twice invaded DR Congo, saying it wants to stop Hutu rebel groups from staging cross-border attacks.

Earlier this month he called out his Congolese counterpart, Félix Tshisekedi, for failing to deal with the FDLR and talk to the M23, saying this was exacerbating the conflict.

Mr Moncrief believes that the targeting of Goma is more about making a political point as he says the M23 does not need the city strategically as it already “controls many more lucrative areas”.

“It is President Kagame’s way of exerting power over who is in charge of North Kivu,” said the Great Lakes expert.

Rwanda accused the military governor of North Kivu, who was killed in fighting last week, of collaborating with the FDLR.

The discovery of this kind of high-level collaboration, experts agree, would have been like a red flag to a bull for Rwanda.

This month alone 400,000 people have fled their homes because of the fighting

The M23’s origins are tied to these tensions – it is the latest incarnation of a rebel group that says it is fighting for the interests of the minority Tutsi community in eastern DR Congo.

Its first uprising more than a decade ago ended with a peace deal – when its fighters disarmed and mainly moved into camps in Uganda.

But three years ago, they began leaving the camps saying the deal was not honoured and within a couple months was seizing territory.

The UN peacekeeping mission – first deployed in 1999 – is not mandated to go on the offensive. Two regional forces – an East African one followed by a southern African one – specially deployed over the last few years at the request of Tshisekedi have failed to contain the M23.

This gives an indication of the M23’s sophisticated operations.

According to the UN group of experts, this includes five months of training at the M23’s main base in Tchanzu, hilly terrain not far from Rwanda’s border, that incorporates courses on theory and ideology and then practical elements including “war tactics”, “engagement rules” and “bush tactics”.

It said Rwandan officers were often at the camp, where recruits, including children, were brought – some joining up on a voluntary basis, others forced to do so in a systematic operation where local chiefs had to provide conscripts.

The experts said Sultani Makenga, who once fought for Kagame in the early 1990s in Rwanda and is now the M23’s military chief, attended some of the passing-out ceremonies between 25 September and 31 October 2024 that involved 3,000 recruits.

Rwanda’s spokesperson Yolande Makolo did not address the question of whether Rwandan officers were in the M23 camp but she did deny the charges about child soldiers, telling the BBC last year: “The claim about recruiting minors in camps is absurd, it’s blatant information warfare against Rwanda.”

However UN expert reports detail how the M23’s strength has grown since May when numbers were put at around 3,000.

The experts estimate that between 3,000 and 4,000 Rwandan army troops are on the ground in DR Congo – saying it based this on authenticated photographs, drone footage, video recordings, testimonies and intelligence.

Captured M23 fighters said that the Rwandans were known as the “Friendly Force”, with the experts’ December report saying the English term was “generically used” even when interviewees were speaking in other languages.

They said these Rwandan special forces were there to train and support the rebels, and they did not interact with M23 regulars.

Rwanda’s ally Uganda, unhappy about another rebel group in DR Congo that threatens its security, has also been accused of helping the M23 – with its officers also spotted at Tchanzu. The UN experts say Uganda has also supplied weapons, hosted rebel leaders and allowed cross-border movements of M23 fighters – accusations Kampala denies.

Kagame recently expressed his frustration that after Tshisekedi came to power in 2019, his suggestion that Rwanda work alongside the Congolese army to tackle the FDLR had been rebuffed – unlike a joint offensive by DR Congo and Uganda against the Islamist Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels.

This may explain the re-emergence of the M23 in 2021 – with evidence showing Rwanda’s backing of the group continues to grow.

Clémentine de Montjoye, senior researcher in the Africa division at Human Rights Watch, told the BBC that geolocated images placed Rwandan troops in Sake, a town just outside Goma last week.

The UN experts say the M23’s decision to capture the mining town of Rubaya, which fell to its forces in May, was “motivated by a strategic need to monopolise” the lucrative trade in coltan, which is used to make batteries for electric vehicles and mobile phones.

Its December report says the group now collects at least $800,000 (£643,000) a month from the taxation of coltan in Rubaya – and ensures that around 120 tonnes of the coveted mineral is sent directly to Rwanda every four weeks.

It includes satellite images to show how a road was widened by September on the Congolese side of the Kibumba border crossing to allow access for heavy trucks that were previously unable to use the route into Rwanda.

The M23 and the Rwandan army are accused of jamming GPS signals, making it impossible to operate drones and other aircraft

Ms De Montjoye explained how the advanced weapons being used by the M23 were not available to any other of the numerous armed groups operating in eastern DR Congo.

“Earlier last year, we documented how Rwandan forces, and M23 had fired 122mm rockets, hitting displacement camps,” she told the BBC.

“It’s certainly with the kind of military support that the M23 has received that they’ve been able to make such an advance [on Goma].”

UN experts included photos of a short-range air defence system in their most recent report, saying three were spotted in M23 territory (Kibumba, Kitchanga and Karuba) in November being operated by soldiers using weaponry and backpacks similar to standard Rwandan army issue

The UN experts have documented many such examples, including the use of Israeli-made anti-tank guided missiles.

Mr Moncrief said the M23 was also using technology to interfere with Global Positioning System (GPS) that had stopped the Congolese army from flying drones it had acquired from China.

The UN experts said the “spoofing and jamming” near areas controlled by M23 and the Rwandan army had also disrupted other aircraft.

President Kagame has dismissed these UN reports, pouring scorn on their “expertise” and saying they ignore many outrages committed in DR Congo to focus on “imaginary problems” created by the M23.

The East African Community – currently headed by Kenya’s president – is now trying to mediate, though Tshisekedi has said he will not attend a hastily organised emergency summit.

Observers say Rwanda’s president will be telling any mediator that the FDLR is the only subject up for discussion as he is adamant their presence makes DR Congo an unsafe neighbour – something he reiterated at a press conference earlier this month.

“Honestly, for the last 30 years if anyone wanted to understand what the problems are [in DR Congo] and what solutions should be, you don’t even need to be an expert,” Kagame said.

In recent years, there has been growing evidence pointing towards Rwanda’s support of the M23 rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The M23 rebel group, which emerged in 2012, has been accused of committing numerous human rights abuses and destabilizing the region.

One piece of evidence that suggests Rwanda’s involvement with the M23 rebels is the United Nations Group of Experts report. The report details how Rwanda has provided weapons, ammunition, and recruits to the rebel group. Additionally, there have been reports of Rwandan soldiers fighting alongside the M23 rebels in the DRC.

Furthermore, former M23 rebels have come forward and admitted to receiving support from Rwanda. They have disclosed how they were trained and armed by Rwandan military officials before being sent to fight in the DRC.

The Rwandan government has denied these allegations, but the mounting evidence continues to raise questions about their involvement with the M23 rebels. The international community has called for an investigation into Rwanda’s role in supporting the rebel group and has urged them to cease their support.

As the evidence continues to surface, it is crucial for Rwanda to be held accountable for their actions and for the international community to take steps to end their support of the M23 rebels.
