  • Midweek storm to bring a risk of severe weather, significant icing to central, eastern US

Following a mostly quiet and even mild start to the week across a large part of the eastern half of the nation, a large, multifaceted storm is expected to take shape by the middle of the week that can bring a variety of impacts, say AccuWeather meteorologists.

“A clash of warm, humid air and cold Arctic air will result in a myriad of impactful weather for millions of Americans this week,” said AccuWeather Meteorologist Brandon Buckingham. “Severe thunderstorms, a dangerous ice storm and accumulating snow are all expected between Wednesday and Thursday as a storm races east.”

The storm will signal the start of what could end up being one of the stormiest periods of the winter from the Plains to the East Coast during the first half of February, perhaps partially proving Punxsutawney Phil’s prognostication of six more weeks of winter correct.

As atmospheric ingredients come together over the central states Tuesday night into the Wednesday, the storm will be underway, and first on the docket will be a risk of an icy mix on its cold side and feisty thunderstorms on its warm side, warn AccuWeather experts.

Record-challenging warmth funneling northward into the Tennessee and Ohio River Valleys will help provide the ingredients necessary for widespread thunderstorm activity beginning Wednesday,” said Buckingham. “Some of the storms are even expected to turn severe.”

Thunderstorms are expected to blossom Wednesday afternoon around the Mississippi Valley, including the St. Louis area, before advancing toward the Ohio Valley during the evening and nighttime hours. Hail, damaging winds over 60 mph and torrential rain are the primary threats, but an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

Additional storms are expected farther south and east into the Tennessee Valley come Thursday, but widespread severe weather is not anticipated.

Meanwhile, on the colder side of the storm, a wintry mix of snow and ice can throw a wrench into travel plans for the middle of the week in some big cities such as Chicago, Detroit and Minneapolis. For some, the threats will go well beyond just a slippery mix.

“As the mild air mass clashes with frigid air farther north, the ingredients for a major ice storm are expected to be in place beginning Wednesday across a zone spanning from the Midwest to the Great Lakes,” warned Buckingham.

Significant icing, featuring a build up of 0.25 of an inch or more, can occur into Wednesday night mainly along and between the Interstates 80 and 94 corridors in Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. Hazardous travel would result from that freezing rain, which occurs when rain freezes on contact with any subfreezing surface.

AccuWeather meteorologists are warning that the impacts from icing will not just be limited to the Midwest, but will also expand into parts of the Appalachians, mid-Atlantic and Northeast later in the week.

“The potential exists for dangerous amounts of ice accretion into Thursday,” added Buckingham. “This poses a risk for tree damage and power outages as the storm moves through.”

A portion of the central Appalachians north through Pennsylvania and southern New York appear most at risk for a significant ice storm, where up to half of an inch of ice buildup is not out of the question. Cumberland, Maryland; Harrisburg, Scranton, State College and Williamsport, Pennsylvania; and Binghamton, New York, are among the cities at risk for long-lasting power outages, downed tree limbs and nearly impossible travel conditions from this storm.

A much larger area extending as far south and east as the I-95 corridor from Washington to Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston, and north through the Toronto, Canada area, and upstate New York, are expected to see a briefer period of icing, either before a changeover to rain (in the case of the Northeast big cities) or after a period of accumulating snow (in areas farther north near the Canadian border).

Any amount of icing can lead to slippery travel, especially on untreated surfaces and bridges and overpasses. This period may end up coinciding with the Thursday morning commute in many areas, forcing delayed openings or closures for schools and businesses.

Complicating things will be the potential for cold, gusty winds to follow the storm on Thursday and Friday, potentially resulting in a rash of additional hazards even after the icing is over.

AccuWeather’s team of long-range forecasters have been hinting about a stormy first half of February since last month, and that scenario seems to be coming to fruition. In a prediction that beat Punxsutawney Phil’s by several days, wintry weather will be abundant.

“We are monitoring three potential storms between Feb. 5-11,” said AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Forecaster Paul Pastelok last month. “This will be a busy pattern with potential disruptions to travel and business.”

Following the first storm during the middle of this week, another will follow closely on its heels from Friday through next weekend. While details on where snow, ice and thunderstorms can occur are still hazy at this point, many of the same of the same areas are expected to see adverse weather and travel delays.

At least one more storm can follow for beginning early in the workweek after, and indications are that even more moisture and cold air may be available for a larger area of snow and ice then.

Attention central and eastern US residents: brace yourselves for a midweek storm that is set to bring a risk of severe weather and significant icing to the region.

Meteorologists are warning that a powerful storm system will sweep across the central and eastern US, bringing with it the potential for severe thunderstorms, damaging winds, and even tornadoes in some areas. In addition, parts of the region could see heavy rain and flash flooding.

But that’s not all – the storm is also expected to bring significant icing to parts of the central and eastern US, particularly in the Midwest and Northeast. This could lead to hazardous driving conditions, power outages, and potentially dangerous situations for those living in affected areas.

It’s important to stay tuned to your local weather forecast and prepare accordingly for this incoming storm. Make sure you have emergency supplies on hand, stay off the roads if possible, and listen to any warnings or advisories issued by local authorities.

Stay safe, stay informed, and stay prepared as we weather this midweek storm together.

  • Why Dante Exum’s ‘long road’ back from wrist injury is significant for Dallas Mavericks

DETROIT — The last time Dante Exum played in an NBA game was June 17, 2024.

He was among several members of the Dallas Mavericks to walk through the green and white shower of confetti that fell from the rafters of TD Garden, which marked the conclusion of a five-game Finals loss to the Boston Celtics.

Exum was positioned to be one of the team’s primary ballhandlers coming into a new season to support Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Those plans were derailed on the first day of training camp, when his right wrist collided with the rim after a dunk attempt.

Exum joined the Mavericks on the court for the first time in over seven months on Friday when he brought the ball up on the first possession of the second quarter.

It was a significant moment in Exum’s extensive journey back from a severe wrist injury that required surgery. The veteran guard missed the first three months of the season, but his return in Friday’s 117-102 loss to the Detroit Pistons was a sign that the Mavericks are one step closer to becoming healthy.

“It’s been a long road,” Exum said. “It’s been a lot of ups and downs. Just the work to get back to this point, it’s been a lot. Unfortunately, we couldn’t win tonight. That would’ve been a nice icing on the cake. There’s still a lot of work to do. I got a lot of work to do. Hopefully I can get back to my normal self as quick as possible.”

Exum said he tore the ligament in one of the eight carpal bones in his wrist, which required a procedure to repair.

As expected for someone who’s missed such a significant amount of time, Exum’s playing opportunity was limited on Friday night. He played only 14 of his 15-minute restriction and finished with just three points, two rebounds, one assist and two turnovers.

Exum showed signs of fatigue at times, and didn’t have much lift on the lone 3-pointer he attempted. However, he also had moments when he showed an asserted effort to drive to the basket. His most ambitious play was a dunk attempt, but he was fouled on the right wrist by Pistons center Jalen Duren. Exum used the same wrist that required surgery to brace his fall. He rose to his feet and split a pair of free throws.

“I’m mad at myself for doing it, but I feel like it’s a hats off to me and the rehab team,” Exum said. “It shows that we did our job and I can come back and fall on it and still get back up. No fear going into the next game, and coming back stronger.”

Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said Exum provided a positive pace for the team despite his limited minutes.

“The things that he did for us were great,” Kidd said. “He was part of that group that helped us get back into the game to cut it to four, I think. A lot of positive things. He came out healthy, so we’ll see how many minutes he can go on a Sunday afternoon.”

The Mavericks will continue their longest road trip of the season Sunday in Cleveland, followed by Tuesday’s game in Philadelphia and Thursday’s rematch against Boston. All three of those games could be used to give Exum the reps he’s needed since he hasn’t participated in any five-on-five basketball activity. The Mavericks only had three practices in January because of their lack of available bodies.

“Not much. Actually, none at all,” Exum said. “We had our two-way guys playing a lot of minutes so it was hard to play five-on-five, but we made it work. We made myself get runs when we could and be ready for tonight.”

Exum’s first game back showed he’s still willing to attack the rim with the same force without any worries about excessive contact with his wrist.

“It’s something I’ve done a thousand times,” Exum said. “Just this one time, it decided to snap or whatever it did.”

Dante Exum’s ‘long road’ back from a wrist injury is significant for the Dallas Mavericks for a number of reasons.

First and foremost, Exum is a talented young player with a lot of potential. He was the fifth overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft and has shown flashes of brilliance on the court. His ability to play both guard positions and his defensive skills make him a valuable asset for any team.

Secondly, Exum’s return to full health and form could provide a much-needed boost to the Mavericks’ backcourt. With injuries to key players like Jalen Brunson and Tyrell Terry, the team has been lacking depth at the guard positions. Exum’s presence could help alleviate some of these issues and provide valuable minutes off the bench.

Additionally, Exum’s return could provide a spark for the Mavericks as they head into the second half of the season. His energy and enthusiasm on the court could help motivate his teammates and improve team chemistry.

Overall, Dante Exum’s journey back from injury is significant for the Dallas Mavericks because it has the potential to improve the team’s overall performance and provide a much-needed boost as they push for a playoff spot.

  • Thunder’s Chet Holmgren takes significant leap in injury recovery process

As the Oklahoma City Thunder gear up for their four-game homestand, starting against the Sacramento Kings, injured forward Chet Holmgren is making significant progress in his recovery from a pelvic injury.

After a brief two-game road trip, topped by a 116-109 Thunder loss to the Golden State Warriors, Holmgren joined Oklahoma City during a team shootaround ahead of Saturday’s matchup.

Holmgren was seen running up and down the floor with his teammates, and in one video clip, threw down a dunk, per the Thunder Wire’s Clemente Almanza.

There’s no word if Holmgren is ahead of schedule, but he is slated to make his return either before the All-Star break or after the 2025 All-Star Game, which is when he’s most likely to be back in uniform. This is the second significant step in his recovery process. Holmgren made his first big step earlier this month, joining Oklahoma City amid its 15-game win streak in January.

Thunder’s Chet Holmgren made his last appearance in a 127-116 loss against the Warriors, where he suffered the injury. Chet has played in only 10 games this season while averaging 16.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.6 blocks, and 2.0 assists in 2024-25. The Thunder will host the Kings without All-Star Jalen Williams (right sprained wrist) on Saturday.

Thunder forward Jalen Williams has evolved into an All-Star, a well-deserved honor for the 23-year-old forward who’s only strived to improve his game every season.

“Expectations are good. I think the inverse of that is nobody expects anything from you. Then, that kind of sucks,” Williams said. “So I take that as a blessing. I’m not really worried about what other people expect from me. I have a lot of the perspective. I know I’m in my third year. So it’s one of those things I’m constantly searching how to get better.”

It’s an approach that’s led to vast growth for Williams and the Thunder.

“I always say in our exit meeting, above everything else, I want to look back on the year and think about how much better did I get each game and how much better I get throughout the year,” Williams added. “So I think I do a good job of keeping perspective of it. I don’t really care about a lot of the outside noise that’s going on.”

Without Williams, the Thunder will begin their four-game homestand against the Kings at the Paycom Center.

Chet Holmgren, the highly touted center for the Oklahoma City Thunder, has taken a significant leap in his recovery process from a recent injury.

Holmgren, who suffered a setback earlier in the season, has been putting in long hours of rehab and working tirelessly to get back to full strength. His dedication and determination have paid off, as he has made significant progress in his recovery.

The Thunder organization is thrilled with Holmgren’s progress and is excited to see him back on the court in the near future. Holmgren’s unique skill set and versatility make him a valuable asset to the team, and his return will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the Thunder’s performance.

Fans are eagerly anticipating Holmgren’s comeback and are looking forward to seeing him back in action. With his work ethic and determination, there’s no doubt that he will come back stronger than ever and make a significant impact for the Thunder. Stay tuned for updates on Holmgren’s recovery process and return to the court.

  • Pilot safe after F-35 military jet suffers ‘significant damage’ in accident at Alaska base

    Generate Key Takeaways

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A U.S. Air Force pilot was reported to be safe after a single-seat F-35 fighter jet crashed Tuesday during a training exercise at a base in Alaska.

The pilot experienced an “inflight malfunction” but was able to eject from the aircraft, Col. Paul Townsend, commander of the 354th Fighter Wing, told a news conference. The plane crashed during the landing phase of the flight at Eielson Air Force Base, he said.

The pilot had declared an inflight emergency prior to the crash and was in stable condition and being evaluated at a medical facility, he said.

The crash, which occurred early Tuesday afternoon, caused significant damage to the aircraft, the Air Force said in a statement.

Eielson Air Force Base is about 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Fairbanks.

Townsend said in the statement said the Air Force would conduct “a thorough investigation in hopes to minimize the chances of such occurrences from happening again.”

Eielson was selected in 2016 to host 54 F-35s, spawning an expansion that cost more than a half-billion dollars that was to include 36 new buildings and dozens of housing units. The expansion included about 3,500 new active duty airmen and their dependents.

With the capability to fly more than 12 hours at a time, the F-35 can reach almost anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere in one mission.

In May, an F-35 fighter jet on its way from Texas to Edwards Air Force Base near Los Angeles crashed after the pilot stopped to refuel in New Mexico. The pilot was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

In October, a Marine investigation blamed the pilot of an F-35 for ejecting from the aircraft when he didn’t need to, causing the fighter to fly unmanned for 11 minutes before it crashed in rural South Carolina in 2023.

  • Gerard Butler’s Film Hits A Significant Milestone, Despite Facing Multiple Biggies!

Den Of Thieves 2 Worldwide Box Office: 2nd Thursday Update
Den Of Thieves 2 Worldwide Box Office: 2nd Thursday Update ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is currently the highest-grossing film of 2025. The film features Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson in the lead roles, reprising their characters from the previous film. The movie has crossed a significant milestone at the worldwide box office and is around $4 million away from recovering its reported budget. Keep scrolling for the deets.

For the uninitiated, it is the sequel to the 2018 heist film Den of Thieves, both of which were directed by Christian Gudegast. The sequel is inspired by the 2003 Antwerp diamond heist, which featured Evin Ahmad, Salvatore Esposito, Meadow Williams, Swen Temmel, and Michael Bisping in supporting roles.

Den of Thieves 2 has a decent score on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics gave it 60%, and the collective consensus states, “Pantera trades the original Den of Thieves’ self-seriousness for a more winking lightheartedness that doesn’t entirely smooth over its familiarity but ought to satisfy those hankering for absolute Dad Cinema.” The audience is also enjoying the heist film, as they have given it 79%.

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera collected $423K on its second Thursday, a drop of -50.3% from last week. The film has reached a $28.85 million cume at the box office in North America. It has collected a solid $7.33 million overseas. Adding that to the film’s domestic cume, its worldwide gross amounts to $36.18 million, crossing the $35 million milestone worldwide. It is less than $5 million away from recovering its reported production budget of $40 million.

Pantera is still enjoying the title of 2025’s highest-grossing film, but that title is temporary as Captain America: Brave New World is set to hit the screens next month and snatch that away. According to Luiz Fernando’s report, the movie is eyeing a $40-$50 million run in the United States.

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, starring Gerard Butler, was released in the theatres on January 10.

  • Akero Therapeutics Reports Preliminary Topline Results Showing Statistically Significant Reversal of Compensated Cirrhosis (F4) Due to MASH—by Both Completer and ITT Analyses—at Week 96 in Phase 2b SYMMETRY Study

    Akero Therapeutics Inc.
    Akero Therapeutics Inc.

Among patients with baseline and week 96 biopsies, 39% of the 50mg EFX group (p=0.009) demonstrated ≥1 stage improvement in fibrosis with no worsening of MASH, representing a 24% effect size over placebo at 15%

By ITT analysis, with all missing week 96 biopsies treated as failures, 29% of the 50mg EFX group (p=0.031) demonstrated ≥1 stage improvement in fibrosis with no worsening of MASH, representing a 17% effect size over placebo at 12%

Investor webcast at 8:00 am ET Monday, January 27, 2025

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Jan. 27, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Akero Therapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq: AKRO), a clinical-stage company developing transformational treatments for patients with serious metabolic disease marked by high unmet medical need, today released preliminary topline week 96 results from SYMMETRY, a Phase 2b study evaluating the efficacy and safety of its lead product candidate efruxifermin (EFX) in patients with biopsy-confirmed compensated cirrhosis (F4), Child-Pugh Class A, due to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). Among patients with baseline and week 96 biopsies (n=134), 39% of patients treated with 50mg EFX (n=46) (p=0.009) experienced reversal of cirrhosis with no worsening of MASH, compared to 15% for placebo (n=47). In the Intent to Treat (ITT) population (n=181), with all missing week 96 biopsies treated as failures, 29% of patients in the 50mg EFX group (n=63) (p=0.031) experienced reversal of cirrhosis with no worsening of MASH, compared to approximately 12% in the placebo group (n=61).

With more than a doubling of effect size from weeks 36 to 96 in the 50mg group (from 10% to 24%), the SYMMETRY study underscores the benefit of longer EFX treatment for patients with compensated cirrhosis (F4).

In a subgroup of patients with baseline and week 96 biopsies who were not taking GLP-1 at baseline (n=97), 45% in the 50mg EFX group experienced reversal of cirrhosis with no worsening of MASH (n=29) (p=0.009) compared to 17% for placebo (n=36), suggesting that the observed reversal of cirrhosis was not attributable to GLP-1 therapy.

“Until today, we’ve not had the prospect of an effective treatment for compensated cirrhosis due to MASH, which is associated with high rates of short-term morbidity and mortality,” said Mazen Nourredin, M.D., Professor of Medicine and Transplant Hepatologist at Houston Methodist Hospital, and principal investigator for the SYMMETRY study. “Now we have reason to be optimistic about the future potential of EFX as a much-needed treatment for cirrhosis, if approved. I’m so happy for my patients and patients all around the world.”

Akero Therapeutics, a biotechnology company focused on developing innovative treatments for serious metabolic diseases, has announced exciting preliminary topline results from its Phase 2b SYMMETRY study. The study evaluated the efficacy of Akero’s investigational drug in treating compensated cirrhosis (F4) due to metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD).

The results of the study showed a statistically significant reversal of compensated cirrhosis at Week 96, as demonstrated by both completer and intent-to-treat (ITT) analyses. This is a major milestone in the field of liver disease treatment, as compensated cirrhosis is a severe and irreversible stage of liver damage that can lead to life-threatening complications if left untreated.

“We are thrilled to see such promising results from our Phase 2b SYMMETRY study,” said John M. Taylor, CEO of Akero Therapeutics. “The reversal of compensated cirrhosis in patients with MAFLD is a significant achievement and represents a potential breakthrough in the treatment of this debilitating disease.”

These findings signal a potential new treatment option for patients with MAFLD and offer hope for those suffering from advanced liver disease. Akero Therapeutics plans to continue investigating the efficacy and safety of its drug in larger clinical trials, with the goal of bringing this promising therapy to patients in need.

Stay tuned for more updates on Akero Therapeutics and the progress of its investigational drug in the treatment of MAFLD.

  • Pacers Reportedly Not Willing to Part With Significant Assets For $94M Forward

The Indiana Pacers are one of the teams that everyone will be watching when it comes to the trade deadline. They have been playing good basketball recently, despite their blowout loss to the Spurs on Thursday.

Because of their good play, they have been looked at as a team that could possibly make a big move at the trade deadline. They have the assets to do such a thing.

Now that they have Aaron Nesmith back, they have a logjam at small forward. Bennedict Mathurin has played very well in place of Nesmith in the starting lineup.

Jarace Walker has started to play much better as well. That means that one of the three forwards could be on the move.

The Pacers have been linked to one of the biggest names on the trade deadline. They have been linked to have interest in Cameron Johnson of the Brooklyn Nets.

Johnson is coveted by multiple teams in the NBA. The Nets know that, so they are looking to extract the most they can in exchange for him.

According to NBA reporter Marc Stein, the Pacers might not be willing to give the Nets exactly what they want in exchange for Johnson. They reportedly want a first-round pick in addition to some players to match the salary.

Johnson would be slotted to play small forward if he were to head to Indiana. With Pascal Siakam at the power forward spot, it would be the only spot he could play in the starting lineup.

Indiana needs help with some defense. Tyrese Haliburton is the worst defender in the starting lineup, so surrounding him with as much length as possible is ideal.

The Pacers still have a shot to make a big trade if they want to make one. They could also sit pat and use Nesmith returning from injury as their big midseason acquisition.

If the Pacers are going to make a move at the deadline, they would likely make a big move as opposed to something small. They already did that with the Thomas Bryant trade.

The Indiana Pacers are standing firm in their stance to not part with significant assets for a $94 million forward, according to recent reports.

Despite the high price tag attached to the player, the Pacers are reportedly not willing to make a major trade that would deplete their roster or future draft picks.

While the forward in question may be a talented player, the Pacers are prioritizing their long-term success and are unwilling to jeopardize their team chemistry or future prospects.

It remains to be seen how this decision will impact the Pacers’ performance in the upcoming season, but it is clear that they are taking a cautious approach when it comes to making significant roster moves.

  • Significant Update On Alex Bregman’s Market

A signing might not be super imminent, but it seems like there’s a real chance Alex Bregman ends up with the Red Sox.

Bregman has been attached to Boston in rumors since the 2024 MLB season ended, but there hasn’t been a ton of concrete reporting on the star third baseman over his two-plus months on the open market. But Wednesday on MLB Network, the New York Post’s Jon Heyman might have provided the most significant insight on Bregman yet.

“Bregman is an interesting one,” Heyman said on “Hot Stove. “I do believe it’s gonna work out great for him because right now I’m hearing there are five teams in it. I’m not sure exactly who the five teams are, but most likely, probably is the Red Sox. I understand he likely would have to play second base and he’d be willing to do it. … I think he fits them. They have not made a big signing at this point. … To me, I think they’re the most likely at this moment to sign Alex Bregman.”

Like Hyeman outlined, Bregman’s willingness to play on the other side of the diamond creates a better fit in Boston. The two-time World Series champion could provide the club with stability at a position where there’s been a revolving door for years. Bregman also swings an impactful right-handed bat that the Red Sox lineup could really use.

Throw in the 30-year-old’s history with Alex Cora, his championship pedigree and veteran leadership, and Bregman certainly fits the mold of a kind of player who should be drawing interest from Craig Breslow and company.

Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman has reportedly received significant interest from multiple teams as the MLB trade deadline approaches. According to sources close to the situation, several contending teams are actively pursuing Bregman and have engaged in discussions with the Astros about a potential trade.

Bregman, a two-time All-Star and Silver Slugger winner, has been a key player for the Astros since making his debut in 2016. His impressive offensive numbers and defensive skills have made him a sought-after player by teams looking to bolster their lineup for a playoff push.

While the Astros have not publicly stated their intentions regarding Bregman, it is believed that they are open to listening to offers for the star third baseman. With the trade deadline rapidly approaching, it remains to be seen whether a deal will be reached or if Bregman will remain in Houston for the foreseeable future.

Stay tuned for more updates on Alex Bregman’s market as the trade deadline approaches.
