“They didn’t say (anything) other than ‘Win out. There’s no other option,’” Beamer said. “I said, ‘OK, that’s great to say, but there’s some things we got to perform better. We got to coach better and we got to play better.’
“They committed to it and they’ve been on a mission since then as well, to not just say it but be about it as well. To do it.”
This is where the story could have ended. One more loss could have sunk the season and relegated the passionate speech to the bin of others that were never publicized because, um, they didn’t work.
But the Gamecocks went to Oklahoma — granted, a team that had a sorry season, but still a team playing at home on a field where USC had never played — and punched the Sooners nearly back into the Big 12. They roared to a 44-10 win over Texas A&M, ranked 10th at the time, sprinted past a surprisingly strong and ranked Vanderbilt team, then faced nemesis Missouri at home.

Winning out meant every game. Not just the regular season. It’s why so many elected to stay and play instead of taking the easy choice and opting out.
“The whole year, we knew what we could be. It was one of those moments, if we wanted to accomplish what we wanted to accomplish, we had to win out,” said defensive tackle Boogie Huntley. “We all knew it was possible and we all knew we would do that.”
The Gamecocks had a simple message for their coach at 3-3: Keep fighting
