Eagles RB Saquon Barkley will not play in Week 18 vs. Giants; Eric Dickerson’s single-season record remains

He became just the ninth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards, accomplishing the feat in Week 17 against the Dallas Cowboys. Barkley also became the very first 2,000-yard rusher to hit the milestone with his second NFL team.

During his time with the Giants, Barkley had his share of injury issues and that history likely played at least a part in the thinking of shutting him down. Entering the final week, Barkley leads the NFL with 345 carries, his 2,005 rushing yards, 125.3 yards per game, 378 touches and 2,283 scrimmage yards.

He’d already well surpassed his previous career highs in carries (295) and touches (352 twice), so worries about his workload were glaring, especially as the NFC East champions are hoping to make some noise in the postseason.

In his first game playing against the Giants back in Week 7, Barkley was sensational to the tune of 176 yards and a touchdown on only 17 carries. Consequently, Sirianni asked Barkley during the 28-3 blowout if the RB wanted to remain in the game to set a new single-game career high. At the time it was 189 yards and Barkley declined. During his remarkable season, Barkley blew past his previous game high with a Week 12 showing of 255 yards.

This time around, Barkley won’t be going back in against the Giants, either, as the onus on him emerging unscathed for the Eagles’ playoff run has taken precedence over individual history.

The Philadelphia Eagles will be without star running back Saquon Barkley in their Week 18 matchup against the New York Giants. Barkley, who has been dealing with a lingering injury, has been ruled out for the season finale, meaning he will not have a chance to break Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record.

Dickerson set the record in 1984 when he rushed for 2,105 yards in a single season. Barkley, who has had a productive season when healthy, falls short of that mark with 1,250 rushing yards on the season.

While it is disappointing for Barkley and Eagles fans that he will not have the opportunity to break the record, his health and long-term success are the top priority. The Eagles will look to other running backs to step up in Barkley’s absence and finish the season strong against their division rival.

  • Eric Dickerson isn’t rooting for Saquon Barkley to break his single-season rushing record: ‘Absolutely not’

Eric Dickerson isn’t rooting for Saquon Barkley to break his single-season rushing record: ‘Absolutely not’

Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson may not have the most gracious response when asked about Saquon Barkley possibly breaking his mark for most rushing yards in a single season. But he’s certainly honest in how he feels about possibly being topped in the record book.

“I don’t think he’ll break it,” Dickerson said to the Los Angeles Times’ Sam Farmer. “Do I want him to break it? Absolutely not.”

Barkley is 268 yards away from Dickerson’s record of 2,105 yards, set during the 1984 season with the Los Angeles Rams. The Philadelphia Eagles have two games remaining on their regular-season schedule, giving Barkley a chance to overtake Dickerson.

With 1,838 yards, the seven-year veteran has to average 133.5 yards in those final two games to seize the all-time mark. Barkley has topped that number in six of his 15 games this season. With quarterback Jalen Hurts out while in concussion protocol, the Eagles may rely more on their ground game versus the Dallas Cowboys.

Dickerson is also quick to point out that if Barkley does surpass him, he’ll do it in 17 regular-season games — one more than Dickerson played in 1984.

“I don’t pull no punches on that. But I’m not whining about it,” he added. “He had 17 games to do it? Hey, football is football. That’s the way I look at it.”

If Barkley doesn’t overtake Dickerson for the single-season rushing mark, he can still join an exclusive club of NFL running backs who gained 2,000 yards. Eight others have rushed for 2,000 yards or more in a season. Derrick Henry did it most recently, gaining 2,027 yards in 2020 with the Tennessee Titans. O.J. Simpson was the first to break the 2,000-yard mark in 1973 with the Buffalo Bills — doing so in 14 games.

Here is the current list of 2,000 rushers:

    Eric Dickerson – 2,105 (1984)
    Adrian Peterson – 2,097 (2012)
    Jamal Lewis – 2,066 (2003)
    Barry Sanders – 2,053 (1997)
    Derrick Henry – 2,027 (2020)
    Terrell Davis – 2,008 (1998)
    Chris Johnson – 2,006 (2009)
    O.J. Simpson – 2,003 (1973)

Dickerson is also aware that Barkley could set the rushing mark against the New York Giants, the team that let Barkley go as a free agent. That would likely feel like redemption for Barkley and provide another embarrassing note in what’s been a miserable 2024 for the Giants.

“How ironic would it be for him to break the record on them, the team that let him go,” Dickerson said. “A true slap in the face.”

Legendary running back Eric Dickerson has made it clear that he is not rooting for New York Giants star Saquon Barkley to break his single-season rushing record.

In an interview with TMZ Sports, Dickerson was asked if he was rooting for Barkley to surpass his record of 2,105 rushing yards in a single season. His response was a resounding “Absolutely not.”

Dickerson went on to explain that he takes pride in holding onto his record and believes that records are meant to be broken, but he doesn’t want his record to be broken by just anyone.

“I want it to be broken by a great running back, not just a good one,” Dickerson said. “Saquon Barkley is a good running back, but he’s not a great one yet. So, absolutely not, I’m not rooting for him to break my record.”

While Dickerson may not be rooting for Barkley to break his record, the Giants running back has proven to be a dynamic playmaker in his own right and could potentially challenge the record in the future. Only time will tell if Barkley will be able to surpass Dickerson’s impressive mark.

  • Will Eagles’ Saquon Barkley break the single-season rushing record?

Will Eagles’ Saquon Barkley break the single-season rushing record?

Saquon Barkley, Philadelphia Eagles’ star running back, has been making headlines with his explosive plays and incredible performances on the field. With the NFL single-season rushing record currently held by Eric Dickerson at 2,105 yards, many fans and analysts are wondering if Barkley has what it takes to break this longstanding record.

Barkley has shown time and time again that he is a force to be reckoned with, using his speed, agility, and power to evade defenders and gain yards on the ground. In just a few seasons in the league, he has already established himself as one of the top running backs in the NFL, earning multiple Pro Bowl selections and All-Pro honors.

While breaking the single-season rushing record is no easy feat, Barkley has the talent and determination to make it happen. With a strong offensive line to block for him and a dynamic quarterback in Jalen Hurts to keep defenses honest, Barkley has all the tools he needs to put up big numbers on the ground.

If he can stay healthy and continue to perform at a high level, there’s no doubt that Barkley has a shot at breaking the single-season rushing record. Eagles fans will be eagerly watching and cheering him on as he chases this historic milestone. Stay tuned to see if Barkley can etch his name in the record books!

  • NFL legend Eric Dickerson doesn’t want Saquon Barkley to break his single-season rushing record

NFL legend Eric Dickerson doesn’t want Saquon Barkley to break his single-season rushing record

Saquon Barkley is on the cusp of NFL history. If the Philadelphia Eagles running back can get just 268 yards over the final two weeks of the season, he’ll break Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record, which has stood for 30 years.

Dickerson set the record in 1984 when he rushed for 2,105 yards while playing for the Los Angeles Rams and after three decades of holding it, it sounds like the Pro Football Hall of Famer prefers to hold it for a few more decades.

During a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, Dickerson didn’t try to hide the fact that he doesn’t want Barkley to break the hallowed record.

“Do I want him to break it? Absolutely not,” Dickerson said. “I don’t pull no punches on that. But I’m not whining about it.”

With Barkely needing to average 134 yards per game over the final two weeks, Dickerson thinks his record will be safe for another year.

“I don’t think he’ll break it. But if he breaks it, he breaks it,” Dickerson said.

When Dickerson set the record in 1984, there were only 16 games on the regular-season schedule, but that was bumped up to 17 in 2021, something the Dickerson is definitely aware of.

“He had 17 games to do it? Hey, football is football,” Dickerson said. “That’s the way I look at it. If he’s fortunate to get over 2,000 yards and get the record, it’s a great record to have.”

Dickerson probably won’t complain too much about the fact that Barkley is getting 17 games to break the record and that’s because he got to take advantage of a similar situation when he broke O.J. Simpson’s then-record.

Simpson held the rushing record before Dickerson and he set the mark of 2,003 yards during a 14-game season in 1973. Simpson was the first player to cross the 2,000-yard mark, and since then, it’s happened just seven more times. In the 30 years since Dickerson set the record, Adrian Peterson, who rushed for 2,097 yards in 2012, is the only running back who has even come within 35 yards of topping Dickerson’s mark.

The 27-year-old Barkley needs just 162 yards to reach 2,000 and if he does that, he’ll become the second-oldest player to hit 2,000 yards, trailing only Barry Sanders, who rushed for 2,053 yards as a 29-year-old in 1997.

If Barkley doesn’t break the record this year, Dickerson might end up holding it for a few more seasons. With most NFL teams turning to a running back-by-committee approach, it’s going to be rare to see a player do what Barkley’s doing. As a matter of fact, this is the fourth season of the 17-game schedule and in that time, only two running backs have even rushed for more than 1,700 yards: Jonathan Taylor in 2021 (1,811) and Barkley this year (1,838 heading into Week 17).

In a recent interview, NFL Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson expressed his desire for his single-season rushing record to remain intact. The record, set in 1984 with 2,105 yards, has stood for over three decades.

Dickerson admitted that he admires the talent and skill of current New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley, but he hopes that Barkley falls short of breaking his record.

“I have a lot of respect for Saquon Barkley and what he can do on the field, but I worked hard for that record and I would like to see it stand for a little while longer,” Dickerson said.

Despite his desire to hold onto his record, Dickerson acknowledged that records are made to be broken and that Barkley has the potential to achieve great things in the NFL.

“I know Saquon is a special player and he has the ability to do great things in this league. If he does end up breaking my record, I will congratulate him and wish him the best,” Dickerson added.

It remains to be seen if Barkley will be able to surpass Dickerson’s impressive record, but one thing is for sure – the competition in the NFL is fierce and records are always at risk of being broken.

Eric Dickerson doubts Saquon Barkley breaks his single-season rushing record

Eric Dickerson broke the NFL’s single-season rushing record 13 years before Saquon Barkley was born when Dickerson rushed for 2,105 yards with the Rams in 1984.

Barkley is 268 yards from breaking Dickerson’s record with two games remaining.

The Eagles play the Cowboys and the Giants to close out the season, but if they win Sunday, it would seem likely Nick Sirianni will choose to rest most of his starters in Week 18.

I don’t think he’ll break it,” Dickerson told Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times. “But if he breaks it, he breaks it. Do I want him to break it? Absolutely not. I don’t pull no punches on that. But I’m not whining about it. He had 17 games to do it? Hey, football is football. That’s the way I look at it. If he’s fortunate to get over 2,000 yards and get the record, it’s a great record to have.”

Dickerson set his record in 16 games. The NFL now plays a 17-game schedule.

Dickerson seems unbothered by the fact Barkley could break his record with an extra game. As Dickerson points out, O.J. Simpson needed only 14 games to became the NFL’s first 2,000-yard rusher when he ran for 2,003 yards in 1973.

“O.J. Simpson was my favorite player. He went over 2,000 yards in 14 games. It took me 15 games to get to 2,000. I had one extra game to play,” Dickerson said. “Getting to 2,000 is an accomplishment in itself. I got close to that three other times.”

Besides Simpson and Dickerson, Adrian Peterson (2,097 with Minnesota in 2012), Jamal Lewis (2,066 with Baltimore in 2003), Barry Sanders (2,053 with Detroit in 1997), Derrick Henry (2027 with Tennessee in 2020), Terrell Davis (2,008 with Denver in 1998) and Chris Johnson (2,006 with Tennessee in 2009) are the only other backs to top 2,000 yards.

Former NFL running back Eric Dickerson recently expressed doubt that New York Giants’ star running back Saquon Barkley will break his single-season rushing record. Dickerson currently holds the record with 2,105 rushing yards in a single season, set in 1984.

In a recent interview, Dickerson stated that while Barkley is undoubtedly a talented and explosive player, he believes that the modern NFL game and the emphasis on passing has made it more difficult for running backs to reach such lofty rushing totals. Dickerson also mentioned the challenges that Barkley may face with injuries and the overall wear and tear of the position.

Despite the skepticism from Dickerson, Barkley has shown flashes of brilliance in his young career and has the potential to be a dominant force in the league for years to come. Only time will tell if Barkley can defy the odds and break Dickerson’s record, but it’s clear that he has the talent and determination to make a strong push for it.
