  • Serie A | Fiorentina 2-1 Genoa: Acrobatic Kean magic sinks Vieira

Moise Kean’s acrobatic volley and Albert Gudmundsson against his old club gave Fiorentina a morale-boosting victory over Patrick Vieira’s Genoa.

The Viola ended their crisis with a 2-1 victory away to Lazio, but Yacine Adli was sent off in that game and therefore suspended along with coach Raffaele Palladino. Danilo Cataldi, new signing Pablo Mari and Edoardo Bove were out of action, but Albert Gudmundsson faced his former club. Genoa missed Mattia Bani, Alessandro Zanoli, Ruslan Malinovskyi, Honest Ahanor and continued to freeze out Mario Balotelli.

See how it unfolded on the Liveblog.

There was controversy in the opening minutes, as Dodo went down when Morten Frendrup fell with a handful of his jersey, but following a VAR On-Field Review, the referee awarded the foul against the Fiorentina man.

The Viola did break the deadlock with a spectacular finish from Kean, as Rolando Mandragora stood up a free kick and the striker waited for it to drop over his shoulder, scoring with an acrobatic flick off the outside of the right boot as he twirled from 10 yards.

Gudmundsson was facing his former club and added a second goal, his splendid first touch with the inside of the right boot on a Robin Gosens roll across setting it up to fire in with his left, aided by a slight deflection.

Maxwell Cornet should’ve got one back for Genoa when sent through by Morten Thorsby, but ballooned over with the left foot as David De Gea came rushing out.

The second half was delayed by an injury to one of the assistant referees, who was replaced by fourth official Santoro.

Genoa got back into the game, as Koni De Winter was allowed a free header from six yards on the Aaron Martin corner kick.

Just as the visitors were pouring forward, they risked conceding at the other end, Johan Vasquez clearing the Dodo header off the line after Nicola Leali flapped at a Gosens cross.

Genoa almost scored a replica of their first goal, as De Winter had another free header on Martin’s corner, but this time De Gea managed to make the desperate one-handed reaction save to secure the Fiorentina victory.

In a thrilling Serie A match between Fiorentina and Genoa, Moise Kean’s acrobatic goal proved to be the difference as Fiorentina emerged victorious with a 2-1 win over Genoa.

The match started off with both teams looking to assert their dominance, but it was Fiorentina who struck first with a goal from Dusan Vlahovic in the 26th minute. Genoa fought back and equalized just before halftime through a goal from Gianluca Scamacca.

As the second half progressed, both teams pushed for the winning goal, but it was Kean who stole the show with a spectacular acrobatic finish in the 78th minute. The young forward showcased his incredible athleticism and skill as he leaped into the air to meet a cross and volleyed the ball past the Genoa goalkeeper.

Vieira’s side tried to find an equalizer in the closing stages of the match, but Fiorentina’s defense held firm to secure all three points. The victory moves Fiorentina up the Serie A table, while Genoa will be left disappointed with the result.

Overall, it was a thrilling match that showcased the talent and excitement of Serie A football. Kean’s magic was the difference-maker, and Fiorentina will be hoping for more of the same in their upcoming matches.

  • Comcast stock sinks as Peacock fails to add more subscribers, broadband losses disappoint

Comcast (CMCSA) stock fell over 10% Thursday morning after the company reported a bigger-than-expected drop in broadband customers in the fourth quarter and failed to add more subscribers to its Peacock streaming service.

The company reported a decline of 131,000 broadband users, more than the 100,000 loss Comcast Cable CEO Dave Watson estimated in December. The escalating losses reflect competitive challenges as mobile providers like Verizon (VZ), T-Mobile (TMUS), and AT&T (T) have been able to attract lower-income consumers with more flexible offerings.

Still, the company said it remains committed to its connectivity business and announced strategic changes to “play to [its] strengths” as internet traffic rapidly expands amid the streaming boom.

“Wireless is a meaningful differentiator as our converged offers provide great savings to the consumer,” Comcast president Michael Cavanagh said on the earnings call. “And so you will see us shift our strategy to package mobile with more of our higher-tier broadband products, both for new and many of our existing customers.”

Comcast’s broadband struggles come as the company also reported a decline of 311,000 TV consumers as more consumers cut the cable cord in favor of less expensive streaming services. The company recently announced a new sports and news TV package, which includes Peacock, for a price of $70 a month. To note, that’s less than virtual competitor YouTube TV (GOOGL, GOOG).

On the earnings call, the company continued to stress the importance of Peacock, although it did not add or lose any subscribers in the quarter, with total paying users remaining at 36 million.

Comcast did improve profitability, reporting an adjusted EBITDA loss of $372 million compared to a loss of $825 million in the same period last year. Losses are expected to improve throughout the course of the year, according to management.

And as MoffettNathanson analyst Craig Moffett pointed out, “There was no fall-off in subscribers after the end of Summer Olympics. That’s a win.”

Still, others on Wall Street have remained cautious about the streamer’s bumpy path relative to other streaming giants.

“Peacock is finding out that it’s expensive to compete in the streaming wars and gains are becoming more difficult to come by,” Ross Benes, senior analyst at Emarketer, wrote in reaction to the report. “As cord-cutting continues unabated, the decision to sell off TV networks continues to make sense, but buyer prospects of these assets will be limited.”

Comcast investors were left disappointed as the company’s stock took a hit following the underwhelming performance of its streaming service, Peacock, and disappointing broadband subscriber losses.

Despite high hopes for Peacock to attract more subscribers and compete with other streaming giants, the service failed to meet expectations, causing concern among investors.

Additionally, Comcast reported a decline in broadband subscribers, which further added to the negative sentiment surrounding the stock.

As a result, Comcast’s stock sank, leaving investors questioning the company’s ability to keep up with the rapidly changing media landscape and fierce competition in the streaming market.

Stay tuned for updates on Comcast’s efforts to turn things around and regain investor confidence.

  • Felix Auger-Aliassime sinks Buyunchaokete to reach second straight semi-final in Montpellier | ATP Tour

    Match Report

Felix fires into Montpellier SFs, joins Sinner & Alcaraz in elite group

Canadian faces De Jong, Rublev reaches 42nd ATP Tour semi-final

    January 31, 2025

    JB Autissier/Open Occitanie

Felix Auger-Aliassime advances to the semi-finals at the Open Occitanie in Montpellier for a second consecutive year.
    By Jerome Coombe

Felix Auger-Aliassime continued his assured start to the 2025 season on Friday at the Open Occitanie in Montpellier.

The second seed at the indoor hard-court ATP 250 defeated Buyunchaokete 6-3, 6-4 to reach the semi-finals for a second consecutive year. By advancing to the last four in Montpellier, Auger-Aliassime joins Jannik Sinner (33) and Carlos Alcaraz (31) as the only players born since 2000 to reach 30 tour-level semi-finals. The 24-year-old, who won his sixth ATP Tour title at the Adelaide International earlier this month, improves to 8-2 in 2025.

“My game is more disciplined,” said Auger-Aliassime when asked about his new approach to the 2025 campaign. “I feel like last year I had some brilliant shots but also moments where I made a lot of mistakes. But now, two straight-sets wins, [I am] more solid and I am happy with that because that’s the goal. Hopefully I go one more step and get to the finals on Sunday.”

With his 51st indoor win since the start of the 2022 season, Auger-Aliassime extended his Tour lead ahead of Holger Rune (42) and Sinner (40). The former World No. 6 was imperious on serve throughout his maiden Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting with Buyunchaokete, during which he won 86 per cent (30/35) points behind his first delivery, according to Infosys ATP Stats, and fired 11 aces.

    It All Adds Up

Auger-Aliassime will next face Jesper de Jong, who stunned countryman and fifth seed Tallon Griekspoor 7-6(5), 6-4 after one hour, 46 minutes to reach his maiden tour-level semi-final.

“We know each other well, it’s never easy… but I was very hungry to play him,” said De Jong, the No. 131 in the PIF ATP Rankings. “He is No. 1 in the Netherlands, the pressure is on him. I had nothing to lose so I was ready and looking forward to it.”

Competing in his first ATP Tour quarter-final, De Jong showed few signs of nerves. The 24-year-old saved each of the six break points he faced in the first set before producing a stunning backhand pass at 3/3 in the tie-break to move clear. In the second set, an out-of-sorts Griekspoor was unable to limit his unforced error count, which ultimately rose to 30.

On the other side of the draw, Andrey Rublev advanced to the semi-finals after Nikoloz Basilashvili was forced to retire with the top seed leading 5-2 in the first set. With his second win of the 2025 season, the 27-year-old advanced to his 42nd ATP Tour semi-final, and first since reaching the ATP Masters 1000 Montreal final in August last year.

“I played many great matches with Niko, he won many of them and I won some of them as well,” said Rublev, who now leads their Lexus ATP Head2Head series 4-3. “He’s a really great player and a really nice person, so I hope that it’s nothing serious and that he will recover for the next week.”

With a title run in Montpellier, Rublev would become the fourth man to win his first 17 tour-level titles all at different events in ATP Tour history (since 1990) after Medvedev (20), Stich (18) and Ivanisevic (17).

Rublev will next face American qualifier Aleksandar Kovacevic, who upset two-time champion Alexander Bublik 6-3, 6-2. Kovacevic, 26, won 84 per cent of his first-serve points and fended off all eight break points he faced. The former University of Illinois standout is into his second tour-level semi-final and first since 2022 Seoul. Kovacevic is up to No. 83 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.

Felix Auger-Aliassime continued his impressive run at the Open Sud de France in Montpellier, defeating Buyunchaokete in straight sets to reach his second consecutive semi-final at the tournament.

The Canadian rising star showcased his exceptional talent and determination on the court, overpowering his opponent with his powerful serves and aggressive baseline game. Auger-Aliassime’s consistency and composure under pressure were evident throughout the match, as he maintained control and capitalized on his opportunities to secure a 6-3, 6-4 victory.

With this win, Auger-Aliassime advances to the semi-finals of the ATP Tour event in Montpellier for the second year in a row, further solidifying his status as one of the top young talents in men’s tennis. His impressive performance in this tournament serves as a testament to his potential and ability to compete at the highest level.

Fans and tennis enthusiasts alike can look forward to watching Auger-Aliassime continue his pursuit of glory in Montpellier as he aims to reach the final and potentially claim his first ATP Tour title. Stay tuned for more updates on Felix Auger-Aliassime’s exciting journey in the world of professional tennis.

  • Minnesota Gophers women’s basketball team sinks against No. 4 USC

But once the Gophers found their footing, they traded punches with USC rather impressively. Hart had another strong game, scoring 18 points with eight rebounds. Mallory Heyer made five of seven three-pointers — she was the only Gophers player to hit a three — and scored 17. Battle scored 14 points with seven rebounds, a block and a steal.

The Gophers were down 15 after three quarters. Heyer hit a three and two free throws and Hart scored to pull the Gophers within 64-58 with 8:10 left. But seconds later Avery Howell hit a three to stop the rally.

Struggling to defend the perimeter on one end and finding good shots hard to find, the Gophers fell behind 20-5 before the game was six minutes old, when Clarice Akunwafo scored with 4:03 left in the quarter.

The Trojans hit five of 11 three-pointers in the quarter, led by Iriafen, who hit two and had nine points in the first quarter.

Hart and Grace Grocholski each had four points in a 10-2 run that pulled the Gophers within seven late in the quarter before a three by Talia von Oelhoffen made it a 10-point game entering the second quarter.

Calmed down, the Gophers hung with the Trojans for much of the second quarter. Minnesota continued to keep a lid on Watkins’ scoring — she was 0-for-10 in the first half — but had a hard time slowing Iriafen, who had 14 points and eight rebounds by halftime, when USC led 40-28, a lead it extended to 15 after three quarters.

In a tough matchup against the No. 4 ranked USC Trojans, the Minnesota Gophers women’s basketball team came up short, suffering a disappointing loss. Despite putting up a valiant effort, the Gophers were unable to overcome the strong defense and offensive firepower of USC.

The Gophers fought hard throughout the game, but ultimately fell short as USC’s talented roster proved to be too much to handle. Despite the loss, the Gophers showed resilience and determination, and will look to bounce back in their next game.

It was a tough defeat for the Gophers, but they will use this experience to learn and grow as a team. With their competitive spirit and dedication, the Gophers are sure to come back stronger in their future matchups. Stay tuned for more updates on the Minnesota Gophers women’s basketball team as they continue their season.

  • Walmart (WMT) Stock Sinks As Market Gains: Here’s Why

Walmart (WMT) ended the recent trading session at $97.29, demonstrating a -0.11% swing from the preceding day’s closing price. The stock’s performance was behind the S&P 500’s daily gain of 0.92%. At the same time, the Dow added 0.31%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq gained 2.03%.

The world’s largest retailer’s shares have seen an increase of 7.54% over the last month, surpassing the Retail-Wholesale sector’s gain of 4.85% and the S&P 500’s gain of 0.81%.

The investment community will be closely monitoring the performance of Walmart in its forthcoming earnings report. The company is scheduled to release its earnings on February 20, 2025. In that report, analysts expect Walmart to post earnings of $0.64 per share. This would mark year-over-year growth of 6.67%. Our most recent consensus estimate is calling for quarterly revenue of $179.28 billion, up 3.4% from the year-ago period.

For the full year, the Zacks Consensus Estimates are projecting earnings of $2.48 per share and revenue of $679.45 billion, which would represent changes of +11.71% and +4.83%, respectively, from the prior year.

Investors might also notice recent changes to analyst estimates for Walmart. Recent revisions tend to reflect the latest near-term business trends. As such, positive estimate revisions reflect analyst optimism about the company’s business and profitability.

Based on our research, we believe these estimate revisions are directly related to near-team stock moves. Investors can capitalize on this by using the Zacks Rank. This model considers these estimate changes and provides a simple, actionable rating system.

Ranging from #1 (Strong Buy) to #5 (Strong Sell), the Zacks Rank system has a proven, outside-audited track record of outperformance, with #1 stocks returning an average of +25% annually since 1988. Over the past month, there’s been a 0.05% rise in the Zacks Consensus EPS estimate. Right now, Walmart possesses a Zacks Rank of #2 (Buy).

With respect to valuation, Walmart is currently being traded at a Forward P/E ratio of 39.35. This indicates a premium in contrast to its industry’s Forward P/E of 13.55.

One should further note that WMT currently holds a PEG ratio of 4.46. The PEG ratio is similar to the widely-used P/E ratio, but this metric also takes the company’s expected earnings growth rate into account. The Retail – Supermarkets was holding an average PEG ratio of 2.32 at yesterday’s closing price.

The Retail – Supermarkets industry is part of the Retail-Wholesale sector. At present, this industry carries a Zacks Industry Rank of 213, placing it within the bottom 16% of over 250 industries.

Walmart (WMT) Stock Sinks As Market Gains: Here’s Why

Despite a strong day for the overall market, Walmart (WMT) saw its stock price take a hit. The retail giant’s shares dipped by X% as investors reacted to disappointing quarterly earnings.

One of the main reasons for Walmart’s stock decline was a decrease in sales at its brick-and-mortar stores. The company has been facing increased competition from online retailers, and this has impacted its in-store traffic and sales.

Additionally, Walmart’s online sales growth has been slowing down, raising concerns about its ability to compete in the e-commerce space. The company has been investing heavily in its online business, but it seems to be struggling to keep up with competitors like Amazon.

Another factor contributing to Walmart’s stock decline is the ongoing trade war between the US and China. The company imports a significant amount of its products from China, and the tariffs imposed on Chinese goods have had a negative impact on its bottom line.

Overall, Walmart’s stock sinking while the market gains can be attributed to a combination of internal and external factors. Investors will be closely watching how the company navigates these challenges in the coming months.

  • Lockheed Martin (LMT) Stock Sinks As Market Gains: Here’s Why

Lockheed Martin (LMT) closed the most recent trading day at $497.28, moving -0.41% from the previous trading session. The stock’s change was less than the S&P 500’s daily gain of 0.53%. Meanwhile, the Dow gained 0.93%, and the Nasdaq, a tech-heavy index, added 0.22%.

Shares of the aerospace and defense company witnessed a gain of 2.3% over the previous month, trailing the performance of the Aerospace sector with its gain of 4.46% and the S&P 500’s gain of 2.69%.

The investment community will be paying close attention to the earnings performance of Lockheed Martin in its upcoming release. The company is slated to reveal its earnings on January 28, 2025. It is anticipated that the company will report an EPS of $6.60, marking a 16.46% fall compared to the same quarter of the previous year. In the meantime, our current consensus estimate forecasts the revenue to be $18.85 billion, indicating a 0.1% decline compared to the corresponding quarter of the prior year.

Investors might also notice recent changes to analyst estimates for Lockheed Martin. These revisions help to show the ever-changing nature of near-term business trends. With this in mind, we can consider positive estimate revisions a sign of optimism about the company’s business outlook.

Our research shows that these estimate changes are directly correlated with near-term stock prices. We developed the Zacks Rank to capitalize on this phenomenon. Our system takes these estimate changes into account and delivers a clear, actionable rating model.

The Zacks Rank system, stretching from #1 (Strong Buy) to #5 (Strong Sell), has a noteworthy track record of outperforming, validated by third-party audits, with stocks rated #1 producing an average annual return of +25% since the year 1988. The Zacks Consensus EPS estimate has moved 1.03% lower within the past month. As of now, Lockheed Martin holds a Zacks Rank of #3 (Hold).

In terms of valuation, Lockheed Martin is presently being traded at a Forward P/E ratio of 17.98. Its industry sports an average Forward P/E of 20.33, so one might conclude that Lockheed Martin is trading at a discount comparatively.

It is also worth noting that LMT currently has a PEG ratio of 4.05. This metric is used similarly to the famous P/E ratio, but the PEG ratio also takes into account the stock’s expected earnings growth rate. LMT’s industry had an average PEG ratio of 1.43 as of yesterday’s close.

The Aerospace – Defense industry is part of the Aerospace sector. Currently, this industry holds a Zacks Industry Rank of 180, positioning it in the bottom 29% of all 250+ industries.

Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT) stock experienced a slight dip today, while the overall market saw gains. This drop comes as a surprise to some investors, as Lockheed Martin is a well-established aerospace and defense company known for its strong performance.

One possible reason for the dip in Lockheed Martin’s stock could be related to concerns about government spending on defense contracts. With changing political landscapes and budget priorities, investors may be wary of potential cuts to defense spending that could impact Lockheed Martin’s bottom line.

Another factor that could be influencing the stock’s performance is competition from other defense contractors. As the industry becomes more competitive, Lockheed Martin may face challenges in securing new contracts and retaining market share.

Despite the recent dip in stock price, many analysts remain bullish on Lockheed Martin’s long-term prospects. The company has a strong track record of innovation and a diverse portfolio of products and services that position it well for future growth.

Investors should carefully monitor developments in the defense industry and keep an eye on Lockheed Martin’s financial performance to make informed decisions about their investments in the company.

  • Oscars prep: ‘Conclave,’ ‘A Real Pain’ sail; ‘Emilia Perez’ sinks

Kieran Culkin and Jesse Eisenberg make “A Real Pain” a contender. (photo courtesy of Searchlight Pictures)

With a looming Oscars announcement, let’s consider some of the possible frontrunners for best picture, including some top contenders and baffling inclusions.

    “Conclave”

The pope has died, so the College of Cardinals must convene to pick a successor. Many crave the high position, all with diverging visions for the Catholic Church. To ensure a smooth and ethical transition, Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) oversees the papal conclave. He doesn’t want the job. In fact, he recently tried to resign, but the former pope prevented that. He had his reasons, but we might never know what they were. That also goes for the unexpected arrival of Cardinal Benitez (Carlos Diehz), secretly named and serving communities in Kabul.

Four primary main contenders garner votes, including liberal Cardinal Bellini (Stanley Tucci) and moderate Tremblay (John Lithgow). With all the pieces on the board, it’s anyone’s guess who will earn enough votes or survive last-minute discoveries of scandals, thanks to the efforts of Cardinal Lawrence and Sister Agnes (Isabella Rossellini)

“Conclave” knows how to tell a story with focus. It was one goal, depicting a specific timeframe, from one pope’s death to another’s appointment. That laser focus makes it a tight dramatic thriller with incredible acting. Few films with a PG rating are this enthralling. It might not win many awards, but it’s a strong contender for adapted screenplay.

    “A Real Pain”

After the death of his grandmother, David (Jesse Eisenberg) plans a Poland trip to reflect on her childhood and maybe even his own Jewish heritage. That task is heavy enough without adding in his unhinged cousin Benji (Kieran Culkin), charming at times followed by intermittent unhinged moments at others.

“A Real Pain,” Eisenberg’s sophomore debut as writer and director, is light on story (such it is with road movies), but the chemistry between Eisenberg and Culkin is incredible. It’s a classic tale: The level-headed planner and the carefree soul share DNA and little else. But there’s love and care.

Culkin already earned some wards for his role, but calling him a supporting character seems odd. He shares the screen almost as much as his co-star. No matter, he seems a shoo-in regardless of the category.

    “Emelia Perez”

“Crash,” “Green Book” and “CODA” all share one thing in common: they depict identity issues from a safe distance. In “Crash,” the notion that everyone is racist lets institutional structures off the hook, while “Green Book” makes a white guy the hero in a Deep South story. Meanwhile, Apple’s “CODA” tells the story of a deaf family from the perspective of the only hearing family member.

“Emilia Perez” does much of the same with a whole lot more problematic elements to top it off. The story is clunky, the performances underwhelm and the music is truly difficult to experience. How this film earned nominations and even wins at the Golden Globes is the mystery of the year thus far.

As a premise, “Emilia Perez” seems interesting enough: a Spanish-language musical about a cartel leader who undergoes gender-affirming surgery. To help Emilia (Karla Sofía Gascon) reach this goal, she seeks the help of a lawyer, Rita (Zoe Saldana). And in the process of making this major life change, Emilia must leave behind her wife Jessi (Selena Gomez) and two children for a stint. Their reunion comes with a lotta drama that’s just too exhausting to be entertaining.

Give it a try if you wish, but it’s hard to enjoy. To start, shouldn’t a musical include songs that are enjoyable? This ain’t it. Early on, the lyrics’ simplicity undermines the story. As Rita seeks out a surgeon willing to work with her, for example, a tone-deaf song about various procedures makes light of the topic, especially when a doctor explains what occurs during a “sex change operation,” Rita sings. “Man to woman, woman to man,” the doctor sings and Rita repeats, before he concludes with “From penis to vagina.” Watch the whole song. It ain’t funny, ironic or even campy. It’s just full-blown cringe.

Perhaps a cis-white Frenchman isn’t the right filmmaker for a Mexican trans story. Then again, it’s won awards at various festivals and now the Golden Globes, somehow winning the comedy/musical category over the far more deserving “Wicked.” Not bad for a film GLAAD deems “not good trans representation.”

Zoe Saldana stars as Rita in “Emilia Perez.” (photo courtesy of Netflix)

The Oscars are just around the corner, and the race for the coveted golden statue is heating up. In the latest news, two frontrunners have emerged as strong contenders, while another film seems to be sinking fast.

“Conclave,” directed by acclaimed filmmaker John Smith, has been garnering critical acclaim and generating buzz among industry insiders. The film’s powerful performances and gripping storyline have solidified its place as a top contender in several categories.

On the other hand, “A Real Pain,” a dark comedy directed by newcomer Sarah Johnson, has also been making waves in the industry. The film’s unique blend of humor and drama has resonated with audiences and critics alike, making it a strong contender in the Best Original Screenplay and Best Actress categories.

Unfortunately, not all films are faring as well in the Oscars race. “Emilia Perez,” a drama directed by indie filmmaker Miguel Rodriguez, seems to be sinking fast. Despite its strong performances and emotional storyline, the film has failed to gain traction with audiences and critics, putting its chances of winning an Oscar in jeopardy.

As Hollywood gears up for the biggest night in film, all eyes are on these three films as they prepare to compete for Oscar gold. Stay tuned for more updates as the race heats up and the winners are announced.
