  • 1/20 Preview – Playing for LA + Players Talk Return Home, Rittich, Doughty/Laferriere skate

WHO: Los Angeles Kings (25-13-5) vs. Pittsburgh Penguins (19-21-8)
    WHAT: 2024-25 Regular-Season Game
WHEN: Monday, January 20 @ 7:30 PM Pacific
WHERE: Crypto.com Arena – Los Angeles, CA
HOW TO FOLLOW: VIDEO: Fan Duel Sports Network – AUDIO – ESPN LA App – TWITTER: @dooleylak & @lakings

TODAY’S MATCHUP: The Kings are back home for just a few days, beginning a short, two-game homestand this evening against Pittsburgh.

HEAD-TO-HEAD: Forwards Anze Kopitar and Alex Turcotte scored for the Kings when these teams met in Pittsburgh, while defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov collected assists on both goals.

Kopitar leads the Kings with 11 points (2-9-11) from seven games played against the Penguins over the last four seasons. In that same span, forward Adrian Kempe has eight goals in seven games, the fourth most goals in the NHL in that span against Pittsburgh specifically.

KINGS VITALS: After yesterday’s day off, the Kings hit the ice today for a full-team skate this morning in El Segundo.

Goaltender David Rittich was the first goaltender off the ice this morning after morning skate, making him tonight’s projected starter between the pipes for the Kings. Rittich has played against Pittsburgh four times throughout his career, posting a record of 1-0-2, with a .906 save percentage and a 2.77 goals-against average.

Despite the full skate, I didn’t see formal line rushes today. As such, here is last game’s lineup for reference –

Not expecting any changes to the lineup tonight, though, beyond the goaltender. The Kings went 11/7 in Seattle, as is their preferred alignment, and both Akil Thomas and Andreas Englund were on late after skate today.

Both Drew Doughty and Alex Laferriere joined the team in red, non-contact jerseys this morning. Neither will play tonight, but still a positive sign. Laferriere is unlikely to play Wednesday either, so we’ll reassess heading onto the road. More on Doughty’s return below.

PENGUINS VITALS: Pittsburgh has won three of 12 games since the NHL’s holiday break, posting a record of 3-6-3 in that span.

Per the Michelle Crechiolo of PittsburghPenguins.com, here’s how the visitors lined up this morning in Los Angeles –

Forward Blake Lizotte will play at Crypto.com Arena for the first time as a visiting player, after signing with the Penguins as a free agent over the summer.

Pittsburgh forward Rickard Rakell did not take the morning skate earlier today in Los Angeles and will not play tonight due to “family reasons”. Forward P.O. Joseph, who missed the game in Washington due to illness, was on the ice today and is available to play tonight against the Kings.

Storyline Of The Day – Playing For LA
Should be a special night in Los Angeles.

“We felt far away from it and we want to be here with our city,” Kings forward and California native Trevor Moore said this morning. “It’s good to be back and we’re looking forward to tonight.”

For the Kings, yes there’s a hockey game. Yes, it’s a big one, back at home after a 2-3-0 roadtrip came to an end with a disappointing performance in Seattle. It’s likely to be an emotional one for the team, though, as was the game in Winnipeg. Since the most recently scheduled home game on January 8 was postponed due to the wildfires throughout California, the Kings have not played a game in Los Angeles since they begun.

Until tonight, with the Penguins in town for a Monday-evening faceoff.

“We’ve all seen the pictures of our home ice, so that’ll be really cool to see,” forward Trevor Lewis added. “Just to see the support for the city, the firefighters and everyone chipping in and coming together. I think it’ll be a good start for us.”

What Lewis is referring to is a specifically designed center-ice logo, which will be in place for games this week and likely through the 4 Nations Faceoff break at least.

The Kings have worn LAFD stickers on their helmets and patches on their jerseys throughout their recent five-game roadtrip. They’ll do that again tonight here at home as well. But the in-ice logo is a new element, something that you don’t see very often in professional sports. The Kings were able to make it happen starting with tonight’s game and the players certainly expressed their support.

“I don’t think we can thank the first responders enough, Lewis added. “For the rink to have that and to come out and skate on it will be pretty special.”

For veteran players like Lewis, Los Angeles has become a second home. He and his family have spent so many years of their life here. For Moore, who is from the area, it certainly hits a bit closer to home as well. Moore has friends and family here too who have been impacted.

“We’re just trying to play for something bigger than just hockey,” he added. “Sometimes it’s silly, because it’s just a sport and these are real people’s lives who were impacted. Anything we can do to support them, we will.”

At tonight’s game, beyond the center-ice logo, look for support and donation opportunities throughout the night, both to show appreciation for those who have gone above and beyond to help and also to help those who were impacted.

As such, it’s obvious there will be emotions tonight. It’ll certainly be an emotional game for the Kings, there’s no doubt about that. Only human, after all.

“Of course there’s going to be, this is real emotion, real human tragedy and you can’t just say ‘let’s put that aside’ and nor should you,” Hiller added. “So, I think the players will feel an appreciation. I think that’s the biggest emotion they’ll feel is appreciation for everybody that’s gone out and done the work.”

Ultimately, as was the case in Winnipeg, we’ll see how things go on the ice tonight. Kings are certainly aware of everything that’s going on but also hope their focus will be between the glass when the puck drops at 7:30.

    3 To Watch For –
    – No, Drew Doughty is not going to play tonight.

But man, was it good to see him back with the team this morning. When the first 2-on-1 against him didn’t connect, he gave that big, Drew Doughty smile. His teammates smiled when asked about him. Just great to see him back.

Doughty skated today for his first practice back with the team, taking part in today’s morning skate in a red, non-contact jersey.

No defined return date as of today on Doughty.

Hiller said that “it’s coming” and “hopefully not too far away”. Wouldn’t expect Doughty to get back into a game without at least a full-contact practice, considering how long he’s been away. The Kings are scheduled for full-team skates tomorrow and Friday, so we’ll probably get a better sense then of how Doughty continues to progress.

    – While he took a couple of shifts up front in Seattle, don’t expect Brandt Clarke to play there this evening.

Clarke admitted after the game he hadn’t played forward in a long time. It was something that Jim Hiller had thought about for awhile in certain situations, but it had not presented itself in a game. Hadn’t even really been much of a conversation. Until it was.

Clarke is a defenseman and made clear he wants to be a defenseman here for the long haul. Nothing changing there, either from player or team.

“I just want to do whatever I can to help this team win,” Clarke said. “At the end of the day, I love playing defense and defense is what I want to do for this team for the next decade plus, but whatever I can do, in any situation that the coach puts me in, I just know I’ll do the best I can, and that’s what I tried to do.”

Clarke was back in his usual spot this morning, alongside Joel Edmundson on the blueline, where he is expected to play tonight. Hiller said there aren’t plans to make Clarke a forward or anything like that, but on a night when the Kings were not handling the puck well, he took one of his best puck-handling players and tried to make something happen.

Ultimately, Kings couldn’t find the game-tying goal and Clarke will be back on defense tonight.

    – Lastly, sharing two stats from LA Kings PR I found interesting.

    1. The Kings (1.94) are the only team with a goals-against per game (GA/GP) at home under 2.00 in the league while their 2.42 GA/GP overall places second-best behind only Winnipeg’s 2.40.
    2. Among goaltenders to have played in at least 20 games this season, David Rittich’s (21 GP) 47 goals allowed, and Darcy Kuemper’s (23 GP) 48 goals allowed rank first and second, respectively, in the least number of goals allowed among netminders.

Rittich will be in net tonight, which makes some sense after Kuemper played four of the five games on the road. Certainly not an indictment on Kuemper’s performance in Seattle, as he gave the team a chance despite allowing three goals. The Kings have been elite defensively this season, especially at home While Kuemper has been outstanding as of late, Rittich has given the team what they’ve needed on most nights as well. Group is confident in him as well, heading into just his second start of the calendar year.

Kings and Penguins, good to see the team back here in Los Angeles. 7:30 PM puck drop here at Crypto.com Arena.

Exciting news for LA hockey fans! As the Los Angeles Kings gear up for their upcoming game on 1/20, there are a few key updates to keep an eye on.

First off, the Kings will be facing off against their rivals, the Anaheim Ducks, in what is sure to be an intense matchup. With both teams fighting for a spot in the playoffs, this game is crucial for both sides.

Additionally, a few players will be making their return home to LA, including Trevor Moore and Sean Durzi. Both players grew up in the area and will surely be looking to make an impact in front of their friends and family.

In other news, goaltender David Rittich has been playing lights out recently, posting impressive numbers in net. His stellar play has been a huge factor in the Kings’ recent success and will be key in the upcoming game.

Lastly, Drew Doughty and Alex Laferriere were spotted skating together in practice, sparking speculation about potential line combinations for the game. Both players have been playing well as of late and will be looking to continue their strong play against the Ducks.

Be sure to tune in on 1/20 to see all the action unfold as the Kings take on the Ducks in what is sure to be a thrilling game!

  • SKATE SHAVINGS — News and Notes from Caps’ Morning Skate

SKATE SHAVINGS — News and Notes from Caps’ Morning Skate

Walk On The Wild Side – The Caps open the 2025 portion of their 2024-25 schedule against the visiting Minnesota Wild tonight, the first of eight Western Conference opponents they will face among their 14 January games. The Wild will be without superstar winger Kirill Kaprizov and captain Jared Spurgeon; both players are currently sidelined with lower body injuries.

The Wild has earned at least a point in 16 of its first 19 road games (13-3-3) this season, and Minnesota’s road record is easily the best in the NHL. The Wild’s road point pct. of .763 is well ahead of that of second-place Vancouver (.688).

“They check really well; they make it really difficult,” says Caps coach Spencer Carbery of the Wild. “Similar to a Boston team, they’re going to make it really difficult on you being able to find any space – they always have numbers above – so we’re going to have to work extremely hard to create not only offensive zone time, but just to be able to penetrate and find ways to get to their net.”

Squeezing Out Sparks – Washington’s December record of 8-4-1 wasn’t quite as stellar as its October (7-2-0) or November (10-4-1) bodies of work, but it was tied for the eighth best mark in the circuit last month. And given the fact that the Caps were 26th in the NHL in December scoring with an average of 2.62 goals per game and that they ranked 30th in the League with just 21 goals at 5-on-5 last month, their record last month is remarkable.

The two teams that finished December with fewer goals at 5-on-5 are San Jose (18) and the New York Rangers (17). The Sharks were 2-10-1 last month and the Rangers were 3-10-0.

Washington was reliant on a staunch team defense and some consistently strong and clutch goaltending to keep the points coming in last month. The Caps yielded only 2.08 goals per game last month, the fourth best rate in the NHL. And although they only scored 21 goals at 5-on-5 in December, the Capitals yielded even fewer (19). Excluding empty-net goals against, Washington also allowed only seven third-period goals in its 13 games last month, the fourth-lowest total in the League, and tied for the lowest among all Eastern Conference clubs.

The Caps may not be playing to their own lofty standards at the moment, but they’re finding ways of winning games and they’ve kept a steady stream of points coming in throughout the season’s first half.

“We don’t always pay attention to all of those stats,” says Caps winger Tom Wilson. “As a group in here, we expect to win every night. Every game looks different, and hockey is a game of mistakes; some nights, you’re not going to have your best game, and you’ve got to find ways to get it done.

“For the most part this year, we’ve shown that we’re a team with resiliency and culture that expects to win. And in those tight games, you just figure it out in that moment. You step up, or guys make big plays, and you get it done.”

Like all pro sports, hockey is a results-based business/game, and there is obviously inherent value in finding different ways of coming out on top on the scoreboard as the season wears on. Coaches are always going to concern themselves mainly with the process, but it’s ultimately results that keep them employed.

Coming out of its three-day holiday break, Washington played three games in less than 72 hours to finish December, winning two of them. But Carbery wasn’t thrilled with his team’s play in any of those three contests.

“We don’t have the puck enough,” says the Caps’ bench boss. “And when you don’t have the puck enough and when teams are out-possessing you, I find that we are defending way more than we were at the beginning of the year. The amount of defensive zone shifts where we have to just get a puck out and then we just change [has increased]. It’s a simple way of saying we need to possess the puck more. Now, what goes into that? A lot of different stuff, of us being able to manage it better, of us being able to find [defensive] zone exits when we have possession and it’s on our stick.

“Not to oversimplify it, but if there was one thing … it’s because we are checking way too often and do not have the puck enough.”

Washington is playing more in its own end than it would like, it doesn’t have the puck as much as it did earlier in the season, and it hasn’t been as good with the puck when it does have it. But the wins and the points keep coming, which is important as the Caps aim to shore up the areas of their game they perceive as sagging.

“Obviously, you want to be controlling games,” says Wilson. “You want to have the stats and then analytics by your side. But it’s not always that simple. We want to win games, and at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how you do it. You’ve just got to be as consistent as you can throughout the whole year.”

The Caps have been consistent. They have yet to go more than two games without collecting a point, and they are – along with the Winnipeg Jets – one of only two teams that enters the 2025 portion of the schedule in the top five in both average goals per game and average goals against per game.

“I think that probably starts with our back end,” says Caps center Nic Dowd. “The six guys that play on any given night – and that includes the who are out of the lineup right now, because those defensemen have stepped in and played really well, and they could [do so] on any given night – are playing really, really well. And that makes it easy on us forwards to get out of the [defensive] zone and get into the [offensive] zone and play where you want to play. The more time you spend down there, the luckier bounces you’re going to get, the more goals you’re going to score, and the less goals you’re going to give up.

“And then, when something has gone wrong, our goalies have played really, really well. They take those mistakes and they kind of get washed away from the memory bank, and people don’t think about them because the puck didn’t go in. But I do think our [defense] corps has played very, very well, and the six that are in there – I would say – are the top six in the NHL.”

Those six defensemen – John Carlson, Jakob Chychrun, Martin Fehervary, Matt Roy, Rasmus Sandin and Trevor van Riemsdyk – have been in the lineup together continuously for nearly two months now, a span of 24 straight games. During that stretch of two dozen games, the Caps are 16-6-2, the third-best mark in the League, and they’ve yielded just 2.38 goals against per game, also third-best in the League. Washington blocked 16.78 shots per 60 minutes last month, the best rate in the Eastern Conference, and fourth in the NHL.

“I think we can get back to our game a little bit more,” says Wilson. “At the beginning of the year, we were playing really well with the puck. But that being said, we’re finding ways to win, which is the most important part through the dog days of the season, when it gets to December, January, and February. You’ve just got to keep collecting wins.”

The 500 Club – Tonight against the Wild, Caps defenseman Jakob Chychrun plays in the 500th game of his NHL career. Chychrun, who is still about three months shy of his 27th birthday on March 31, becomes the third defenseman from his 2016 NHL Draft class to reach the milestone, following Colorado’s Sam Girard (513) and Utah’s Mikhail Sergachev (512).

Chychrun made his NHL debut as an 18-year-old, and he has never played a game in the minors. In the last 40 NHL seasons, only nine defensemen have played more games in the League as a teenager than Chychrun’s 116. Doug Bodger (144) tops the list, followed by Rasmus Dahlin (141), Kyle McLaren (132) and Chychrun’s uncle, Luke Richardson (130). Richardson’s career total of 1,417 games ranks 12th all-time among defensemen.

If not for a few injuries along the way – not to mention the pandemic – Chychrun might have well over 600 games in the League by now.

“In the moment, you’re just doing everything you can to stick around and be there for the guys and contribute however you can at a young age,” says Chychrun. “We had a great team [in Arizona] back then. Lots of guys were very supportive my first year; I was playing with Shane Doan and just some legends of the game. Those were really, really special moments where I could see how those guys were approaching the game. Doaner was 40 years old at the time, and we all looked up to him a lot; he was great for the young guys, and he made us just feel very at home.

“But going into the league at a young age, you just feel like it’s a whirlwind. Every night, you’re playing against some of your idols, and for Doaner to help you just relax and settle in a little bit was awesome.

“But time flies in this league. And that was, you know, the message Mike Smith always preached; [he was] our goalie back then – was you can’t just say, ‘Oh, next year we’ll make the playoffs, or ‘Next year we’ll have a chance to win.’ You can’t take any day for granted in this league, because you blink and for me, it’s my ninth season already. It’s just crazy how fast it goes by, and you really do need to cherish the opportunities you have with a group like this, where we have really good team, and we could come together and do something special, because you don’t have many opportunities.”

In The Nets – Charlie Lindgren takes aim at his 11th win of the season tonight against Minnesota. After being nicked for four first-period goals on Sunday in Detroit in his most recent start, Lindgren closed the door the rest of the way, stopping each of the last 17 shots he faced. In his six December starts, Lindgren was 3-3-0 with a 2.18 GAA and a .914 save pct.

Lifetime against the Wild, Lindgren is seeking his first victory against his home state team. In three career starts and appearances against Minnesota, Lindgren is 0-3-0 with a 3.49 GAA and an .895 save pct.

Future Hall of Fame goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury gets the net for the Wild on Thursday night. Fleury is on his NHL farewell tour this season, his 21st and final one in the League. Fleury’s last season with 30 or more victories was 2018-19 when he went 35-21-5 for Vegas in the second season of then Golden Knights’ existence, but the 40-year-old has managed an impressive 101-67-16 overall record since, while gradually decreasing his workload as his retirement draws closer.

With 567 career victories, Fleury ranks second only to Martin Brodeur (691). Among all active NHL goaltenders only two – Florida’s Sergei Bobrovsky (413) and the Rangers’ Jonathan Quick (398) – are within 200 victories of Fleury’s remarkable career total.

Tonight’s game marks Fleury’s 47th career appearance against Washington and his 46th career start against the Capitals. He owns a 27-14-3 career mark with four shutouts, a 2.64 GAA and a .912 save pct. against the Caps.

For every Fleury win against Washington over the years, there has been an Alex Ovechkin goal against Fleury. The Caps captain has played in 46 of Fleury’s 47 games against his team, and Ovechkin has netted 27 of his 870 career goals against the venerable goaltender, the most he has scored against any of his 178 unique victims.

All Lined Up – Here’s how we believe the Caps and the Wild might look on Thursday night in the District:

SKATE SHAVINGS — News and Notes from Caps’ Morning Skate

The Washington Capitals hit the ice bright and early this morning for their morning skate, gearing up for their upcoming match-up against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Here are some key news and notes from today’s session:

    1. Injury Update: Defenseman John Carlson was seen participating in drills with the team, indicating that he may be close to returning to the lineup after missing the past few games with an upper-body injury. His status for tonight’s game remains uncertain, but his presence on the ice is a positive sign for the Capitals.

    2. Lineup Changes: Head coach Peter Laviolette shuffled up the lines during practice, trying out different combinations to spark some offensive production. Look for some new looks on the top lines tonight as the Capitals look to break out of their recent scoring slump.

    3. Special Teams Focus: The Capitals spent a significant amount of time working on their power play and penalty kill units during the morning skate, looking to improve their efficiency in both areas. With the Penguins boasting a strong special teams unit, the Capitals know they need to be sharp in this aspect of the game.

    4. Goaltending Battle: Both Ilya Samsonov and Vitek Vanecek took turns in the net during practice, as the Capitals continue to rotate their goaltenders to keep them fresh and competitive. The goaltending battle remains a key storyline for the team as they look to solidify their netminding heading into the playoffs.

SKATE SHAVINGS — News and Notes from Caps’ Morning Skate

New Year’s Eve – For just the fifth time in franchise history, the Capitals are hosting a home game on New Year’s Eve. The Boston Bruins are in town for the only time this season, supplying the opposition for a Tuesday afternoon tilt, the opener of Washington’s three-game homestand.

The Caps’ most recent New Year’s Day home game was on this date two years ago when they dismantled the Montreal Canadiens 9-2 here at Capital One Arena. The Capitals are 2-2-0 in previous home games on this date, and they are 7-6-0 all-time in Dec. 31 contests.

As they take the ice this afternoon, the Caps are aiming to rebound from a 4-2 loss to the Red Wings in Detroit on Sunday. The Capitals are 9-2-0 in games immediately following losses this season, outscoring the opposition by a combined total of 44-21 in those contests.

“I think the character inside of our room, the resiliency of the group, leadership,” answers Caps coach Spencer Carbery, asked why his team has been so good in games following setbacks. “I think all of that plays in. Our guys are really competitive and really proud individuals, but as a group they take pride in winning a lot of hockey games and wanting to win a lot of hockey games. So when it doesn’t go our way or we don’t perform to the level that we feel like we’re capable of – and they feel like they’re capable of – playing, they want to rectify that.”

Tuesday Afternoon – The Caps and Bruins had the first of their three meetings this season just over a week ago in Boston, on Dec. 23. That game was the final contest before the NHL’s holiday break for both teams, and it was also the second game of a set of back-to-backs for Washington. It was a 1-1 game heading into the third period, but after the Capitals failed to manage as much as a shot on net during a five-minute, all-you-can-eat power play, the Bruins seized momentum, scored three times and sent the Caps home on the short end of a 4-1 decision.

The Bruins limited Washington to a total of just 11 shots on net in that game, the fewest the Caps have managed in a game in almost 17 years, since they had 10 in a March 22, 2007 game against the then-defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes.

As they prepare to take on the Bruins again today, the Caps know they must find a way to generate better looks and scoring opportunities from the middle of the ice this afternoon.

“There are a bunch of structural things that we’ll talk about with our group about how we can do a better job,” says Carbery. “The main takeaways from going back through it, is you tip your cap, first and foremost. They’re as good as any team in the National Hockey League at preventing you from getting to valuable ice, so there is a component of knowing that, understanding that, and knowing the physical requirements against a team like this – how hard and how difficult it’s going to be and knowing how hard you’re going to need to work.

“There are going to be a lot of 1-on-1 confrontation and you’ve got to figure out a way; it’s either you or him. And he is either preventing you from getting there, or you’re going to find a way through that. So that’s a big part of it, and then we’ll talk about some structural things that we can do to help aid our players in being successful, whether it’s off the rush or in the offensive zone, to try to get to the interior.”

Although the Capitals still lead the NHL with 89 goals at 5-on-5 this season, they’ve managed just 20 goals at 5-on-5 in a dozen December games, tied for 27th in the circuit this month.

A Change Is Gonna Come – Washington will make one lineup alteration for this afternoon’s game with the Bruins; Ivan Miroshnichenko will return to the lineup in place of Jakub Vrana on the right side of a line with Andrew Mangiapane and Lars Eller.

Despite scoring three goals in his last five games – including a pair of game-winners – Vrana will be a healthy scratch this afternoon.

“I haven’t liked [Vrana’s] last two games,” says Carbery. “And I know you have to give him a lot of credit, because he came back into the lineup after sitting for a while. Certainly I respect the fact that he has scored some massive goals for us – two game-winners, scored against Boston on the power play – so he earned that opportunity.

“Now, the challenge for [Vrana] – and this is for any young player or borderline player trying to stay in the lineup – is you’ve got to try to be as consistent as possible, and I’ve felt like the last two games he has taken a step back, and that opens up the door for coaches to make decisions. And Miro – as a young player champing at the bit to get back in the lineup – I thought he took a step back for a couple of games, and that’s why he came out, and now he is going to get an opportunity to grab a hold of that.

“There is a rationale behind it, and we still have full confidence in [Vrana] who quite honestly has an argument – ‘Well, I’ve scored this amount of goals – to get more runway, but that’s the deal when you are in that mix of trying to hang onto a lineup spot.”

Vrana ranks among Washington’s top five skaters in both goals/60 (1.13) and points/60 (2.27) this season.

In The Nets – Logan Thompson gets the crease for the Caps on Tuesday against the Bruins. Coming off a 35-save performance in a 5-2 victory over the Maple Leafs in his most recent start, Thompson has limited opponents to two or fewer goals against in 11 of his last 14 starts, going 10-2-2 with a 2.14 GAA and a .926 save pct. over that stretch.

Lifetime against Boston, Thompson is 2-1-0 in three career starts and appearances, with a 2.29 GAA and a .932 save pct.

Jeremy Swayman – who is 13-10-3 on the season – is the expected starter for Boston today. He is 4-0-1 in his last five starts, with a shutout, a 1.57 GAA and a .918 save pct.

Lifetime against the Capitals, Swayman is 3-4-0 in eight appearances (seven starts) with a 1.68 GAA and a .932 save pct. In his seven career starts against Washington, he has yet to yield more than two goals against in any of them.

12/29 Preview – Byfield’s Play Right on Q + No Skate Today, Back-To-Backs, WJC Update

WHO: Los Angeles Kings (20-10-5) vs. Philadelphia Flyers (16-16-4)
    WHAT: 2024-25 Regular-Season Game
WHEN: Sunday, December 29 @ 6:00 PM Pacific
WHERE: Crypto.com Arena – Los Angeles, CA
HOW TO FOLLOW: VIDEO: Fan Duel Sports Network – AUDIO – ESPN LA App – TWITTER: @dooleylak & @lakings

TODAY’S MATCHUP: The Kings conclude a back-to-back set this evening against Philadelphia, as they take on the Flyers for the second time in 11 days.

HEAD-TO-HEAD: Forwards Anze Kopitar and Kevin Fiala led the way for the Kings with two goals apiece when these teams met in Philadelphia earlier this month.

12 Kings had a point in that game and six had multi-point evenings, with forward Warren Foegele collecting a goal and an assist, while Alex Laferriere, Vladislav Gavrikov and Jordan Spence each tallied two helpers in the victory.

KINGS VITALS: With the back-to-back, the Kings did not hold a morning skate today.

With goaltender Darcy Kuemper playing yesterday against Edmonton, expect goaltender David Rittich to get the start this evening versus the Flyers. Rittich brings a lifetime record of 5-0-0 against Philadelphia, with a .932 save percentage and a 1.95 goals-against average.

For reference, here’s how the Kings lined up during yesterday’s practice –

The Kings went 11/7 yesterday against the Oilers and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the same alignment today. If they look to make a change, I’d expect it to be in the form of forward Andre Lee coming in up front to give the Kings 12 forwards.

Forward Arthur Kaliyev and defenseman Andreas Englund are also available, if the Kings sought further changes, but Lee feels like the option if the Kings do opt for a change.

FLYERS VITALS: Similar to the Kings, the Flyers are also completing a back-to-back, having defeated the Anaheim Ducks yesterday at Honda Center.

Per Jackie Spiegel of the Philadelphia Inquirer, here’s how the Flyers lined up yesterday in Anaheim –

Flyers forward Tyson Foerster had a hand in all three Flyers goals against the Kings when these teams met earlier this month, scoring twice and adding an assist, along with a +3 rating. In total, Foerster has six points (3-3-6) over his last five games played.

Storyline Of The Day – Right On Q
Quinton Byfield talked about the win over the Rangers earlier this month as a turning point for him.

Including that game, Byfield has five goals and seven points over his last six games, bolstered by a two-goal performance in yesterday’s win over Edmonton, including the overtime game-winning goal. In adding an assist, it was Byfield first three-point game of the season and his first since February 10, also coming against Edmonton here in Los Angeles.

“Probably since the Rangers game, when I put one by Shesterkin, it just feels like I can beat goalies again,” Byfield said.

Including that game, no player in the NHL has scored more even-strength goals than Byfield.

If you look at his goals in that span, you’d see that four of the five were shots that beat goaltenders clean, starting with the goal he mentioned against New York. A week later in Nashville, Byfield hammered a shot from the slot off the post and in and beat Edmonton’s Stuart Skinner twice last night with his shot. The overtime game winner was particularly impressive and I’m not sure it’s a shot he even takes earlier this season.

There it is. He made an assertive move onto his forehand, working his way into some space in the slot. Sometimes, it’s just shooter against goaltender. Byfield trusted his shot, picked his spot on the glove side and beat Skinner clean with a shot for his first career overtime game winner. It’s a play he admitted he probably wouldn’t have shot on even 15 games ago.

“I’m just kind of finding it back again, I’m confident with the puck, taking guys on 1-on-1, using my speed,” he said. “I kind of just came back to that and it’s started working.”

It’s looking like the Byfield was saw during training camp this fall. The Byfield who appeared set to take the step from breakout play to star player. He was the best player on the team during preseason games but the production didn’t quite translate into the regular season. By his own admission, Byfield felt very confident heading into the season but when he had a few games that weren’t his best, it was hard to bring himself back up.

As Jim Hiller detailed, every player has those ups and downs, but sometimes it takes a veteran to not get wrapped up in it. Something that will come for Byfield. Right now it’s a high, with Hiller calling Byfield the team’s best player in Washington before the break, which followed a really strong showing against Nashville the game before. Now it’s three in a row. It’s not going to be 50 in a row, though, so at some point, Byfield’s level will drop off a bit and he’ll have to find his way back to level. As he gets more and more experience with the ups and downs of the NHL, those stretches should become smaller and smaller, as they are for Anze Kopitar and as they’ve become, with time, for Adrian Kempe.

If Byfield can continue to find that level, it just unlocks another level for the Kings as a team. Honestly, it’s essential to that being possible. The Kings need to be a team with three lines playing at a Top-6 level. With the way Byfield’s line has come together with Warren Foegele and Tanner Jeannot, you can see that possibility. Same goes for Phillip Danault between Kevin Fiala and Alex Laferriere. When there are three lines playing at that level, the Kings can exploit matchups the way they did yesterday. Neither Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl were on the ice for a goal against. They can’t play the entire game. Byfield’s line exploited the matchup they had and, when things are clicking, that’s a recipe for Kings success.

While Philadelphia is a different challenge, built more like the Kings without the star power but with a lot of younger players throughout their lineup, it’s the same focus for Byfield. Keep it up at that level and the production will continue to be there.

    3 To Watch For –
    – Double back-to-back today.

Both teams played yesterday afternoon, with the Kings winning at home and the Flyers defeating the Ducks on the road. With matching 1 PM puck drops, no real advantage there, with both teams having the chance to get a full night of sleep without much travel between Anaheim and Los Angeles.

Thus far this season, the Kings have been one of the NHL’s most successful teams on the second half of back-to-backs, at 4-1-0, while the Flyers have been one of the least at 1-5-0. Only Boston has collected more points on a per-game basis this season than the Kings in these situations, with another good opportunity tonight to add to that total.

    – Today’s game is Game 2 of 5 on this current five-game homestand. It’s not technically the longest homestand of the season, but the six-game homestand in February is broken up by a two-week break for the 4 Nations Faceofff. So, this feels like the longest one the Kings have.

The Kings are 11-2-1 at home this season, good for a .821 winning percentage that trails only Vegas in the league standings. Great to have these games at home and, if the Kings can take advantage, an opportunity to bank points.

“It’s an advantage if you win them,” Hiller said. “Historically, most teams’ home records are better than their road records. We’ve played particularly well in our building, in front of our fans, so I’m happy that we have the least amount of home games thus far. We’ll make them up, but we’ve got to play well and win them.”

The Kings have played just the 14 times at home, fewest in the NHL to date. A good opportunity, despite difficult competition upcoming, to make the most of an extended stretch at home.

    – Lastly, a quick World Juniors update.

Goaltender Carter George posted a 31-save shutout in his World Juniors Championships debut with Team Canada, a 4-0 victory over Finland in the opening game of the tournament. The 31 saves in total included 20 during a third period in which Finland surged. Big-game player, with the “it factor” is how George has been described by evaluators both inside and outside the organization.

Hampton Slukynsky won his tournament debut for the United States, a 5-1 win over Latvia. Slukynsky made 25 saves on 26 shots, denying the Latvian’s their second consecutive upset victory.

Add onto the goaltending a first goal of the tournament for Kings defensive prospect Jakub Dvorak for Team Czechia, which improved to 2-0 thus far, and you’ve got quite the start. Dvorak is +4 from wins over Switzerland and Kazakhstan.

Good start on all three fronts.

For the big club, Kings and Flyers, final game of 2024!

Hey hockey fans! As we gear up for the game on December 29th, all eyes are on Quinton Byfield’s impressive play as of late. The young forward has been lighting it up on the ice, showcasing his skill and determination in every shift. With his play right on Q, Byfield is sure to be a key player to watch in the upcoming game.

In other news, the team will not be hitting the ice for a skate today as they prepare for back-to-back games. This rest day will be crucial for the players to recharge and refocus before hitting the ice once again.

And speaking of hitting the ice, let’s not forget about the World Junior Championships! With the tournament in full swing, fans are eagerly following the action and keeping an eye on our team’s prospects as they compete on the international stage.

    – Give the Golden Knights a 13-0-3 record at SAP Center

    KEYS TO THE GAMES
Keep The Connection: Coming off the brief holiday break, Vegas would like to keep the same chemistry they had entering the holidays. Keegan Kolesar mentioned that consistency is key. He stated the team addresses what they need to work on, practice it, then bring it to the table come game time.

Division Dominance: Vegas is 11-2-1 in the Pacific Division and 19-3-2 in the Western Conference. Head coach Bruce Cassidy stated that in order to go all the way to the Finals, the team must be good in their own division. Cassidy also mentioned that the team “certainly feels like the top dogs of the division.” Maintaining their top-dog status, alongside remaining calm, cool, and collected is the key to success for Vegas.
