  • After a slow NBA adjustment, 7-footer Kel’el Ware is raising the Heat’s ceiling

Even in a historically poor year for the incoming class, it may be too late for Kel’el Ware to campaign for this season’s NBA Rookie of the Year award. Regardless, Ware is drawing rave reviews from Miami Heat teammates and coaches as he continues adjusting to the pros.

Miami’s had an inconsistent season for myriad (and obvious) reasons. The Jimmy Butler drama, blown leads and untimely losing streaks have been the chief causes for consternation for the Heat. Coach Erik Spoelstra maintains a pulse on what his team needs on a given day, even if it tests the patience of curious fans and observers who want to see Ware get more opportunities to flash his promise, raise Miami’s ceiling and offer glimpses of its future.

On Sunday, previews of that potential became more prominent as Ware logged his most extensive playing time alongside teammate Bam Adebayo, who has mostly held down center minutes for Miami since becoming a full-time starter more than five seasons ago. As the Heat logged a 128-107 home win over Victor Wembanyama’s San Antonio Spurs, Ware and Adebayo recorded 13 minutes of playing time together after entering the matchup with a two-minute sample size. Altogether, Miami’s budding frontcourt duo is holding opponents to 32 percent shooting when they’re on the court and 57.1 points per 100 possessions to yield a 54.6 net rating.

Yes, that is a 15-minute sample. As their time together grows, there will be some regression to the mean. But it’s quite clear the 7-foot tall Ware, who leads the team in blocks per game despite ranking 10th in total minutes, can raise the Heat’s ceiling after patiently moving toward the rotation.

For most of the season, Adebayo, who has since become a three-time All-Star and two-time Olympic gold medalist, has jokingly suggested Ware should be grateful for any burn he gets on the court as a rookie, seeing as Adebayo barely averaged 20 minutes during his first two NBA seasons. But Adebayo, an annual anchor of a defensive juggernaut, sees the upside of highlighting Ware for a team often short on shot-blocking. After Sunday’s win, he predicted being able to get “a couple of All-Defensive teams out of my young fella.”

    go-deeper

    GO DEEPER

Heat Today: Despite up-and-down road trip, Tyler Herro remains confident in Heat’s youthful core

“He’s 7-1. You can’t teach height,” Adebayo adeed on Tuesday after shootaround in preparation for the night’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers. “But also he’s athletic, coordinated, can jump, rebound, block shots. And he has a motor, so, you add all those tools together, you can get a couple DPOYs out of that.”

Since December 29, Ware has contributed minutes impactful enough to stand out for any Heat player, regardless of tenure. His massive wingspan makes it difficult for opponents to comfortably attempt shots near the basket, often forcing unnatural adjustments and contortions to get off a clean attempt. Although Ware and Adebayo have played sparse minutes together, the latter can comfortably be spelled thanks to Ware’s ability to protect the rim.

Last week against the Lakers, Ware almost immediately rejected — practically punched — an Anthony Davis hook shot attempt en route to holding the latter to 1-of-5 shooting for the game. Notice Davis trying to get the shot off as quickly as possible upon receiving the entry pass, but to no avail. Ware finished the matchup with eight points, 11 rebounds and two blocks in fewer than 18 minutes of play.

On Sunday, Ware was seemingly everywhere on defense, whether it was limiting Wembanyama (2-of-10 shooting when guarded by Ware) or forcing other Spurs like Keldon Johnson into an awkward hop stop before sending the shot back.

“I love it. Nah, for real, I do love it,” Tyler Herro said. “It gives small guys like myself protection behind us, definitely on defense and at the rim. It gives a different dynamic offensively too.”

On Sunday, Adebayo credited Spoelstra for trusting his own coaching and development process by committing to what could be a true game-changer for the Heat, both for the rest of this season and the years ahead. Spoelstra has been patient with bringing Ware along, preferring the rookie to make it obvious why he should (or shouldn’t) be on the court.

Ware spent some time with the team’s G League affiliate this season, but he never let his confidence waver, whether due to his own internal belief, Adebayo’s mentorship or Spoelstra’s approach. Earlier this season, Kevin Love expressed enthusiasm about Ware’s potential as a two-way big in an ever-changing NBA, noting the rookie’s willingness to get better, be coached and maintain a patient temperament even when Ware was fresh off his two-game stint with the Sioux Falls Skyforce.

Beyond Ware’s defensive impact, he also shows great promise as a lob option, floor-spacer and passer on offense. He ran some two-man game with Duncan Robinson on Sunday, which was eased by Ware’s viability as a roll threat forcing the Spurs to focus on him as Robinson was freed up for a drive.

Later in the matchup, Ware drew some strong side attention from Wembanyama and his Spurs teammates before dishing an interior dime to Adebayo for a floater near the rim.

“Oh, man, when you have a 7-footer that can do what he do,it makes your life really, really easy.” Jaime Jaquez Jr. said Tuesday. “Being able to knock down shots, stretch the floor while also being a tremendous roll threat (is an asset for a team). Every time he goes down, bigs gotta make the decision to stop the layup or stop the lob, and that’s a very tough decision to make. … We got to know each other during pre-draft a little bit, so I’m really proud of how he’s come along.”

After a slow NBA adjustment, 7-footer Kel’el Ware is raising the Heat’s ceiling

Kel’el Ware, the 7-foot center drafted by the Miami Heat, has had a slow start to his NBA career. However, in recent games, Ware has shown flashes of his potential and is starting to make a significant impact on the Heat’s performance.

Ware, known for his shot-blocking ability and defensive presence, has been gradually improving his offensive game and is becoming a reliable scoring option for the Heat. His size and length have also been a huge asset on the defensive end, as he has been able to alter shots and protect the rim effectively.

With Ware’s continued development and improvement, the Heat’s ceiling is being raised significantly. His presence in the paint has given the team a boost on both ends of the floor, and his potential to become a dominant force in the league is becoming more and more apparent.

As Ware continues to adjust to the NBA game and gain more experience, the Heat’s chances of success this season are only going to increase. Fans and analysts alike are excited to see how Ware’s growth will impact the team and help them reach new heights in the league.

  • Slow, treacherous travel conditions to continue through Tuesday across Michigan

Treacherous travel conditions – including blowing, gusty snow leading to low visibility and white-out conditions – are expected to continue through Tuesday as all of Michigan stays in the grips of this icy blast of air.

The bitter cold has created slick roads across the state, and the lake-effect snow that’s falling is smaller because of the intense cold. This makes it easier to blow around, creating hazardous driving conditions, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Near-zero temperatures and sub-zero wind chills remain dangerous, too. Wind chills down to 25 below zero are expected into Wednesday. Time to frostbite on exposed skin is 30 minutes or less. Stay inside if you can, and make sure to bring pets indoors. Animal rescue groups in Michigan have already reported responding to find dead pets or animals in distress.

“Very cold temperatures and lake effect snow will continue to result in slow and treacherous travel through Tuesday night,” NWS meteorologists in Grand Rapids said. “While not particularly heavy, the snow will greatly reduce visibilities and slowly add up, with the highest additional amounts generally near and west of Highway 131.”

To check the highway conditions before you leave home, click into the state’s MiDrive website. It shows you traffic slow-down areas in real time, as well as any reported accidents and where state-contracted snow plows are working.

On Monday, there was a lot of slow-moving red showing on the map, as slide-offs and pileups were reported from West Michigan to Lansing to Flint. Tonight a snow squall line was reported near Lansing, extending all the way to Livingston County.

One NWS staffer in Grand Rapids shared this first-person account from earlier today: “Take it from someone who drove to work: 5 vehicles in the ditch in a 3-mile stretch of M-6 near Grand Rapids is just one of several problem spots. Even if you see pavement, you might have very little braking action. 45 mph might not be a safe speed. Remember your hat and gloves.”

    Forecast through Tuesday, Jan. 21

More snow is expected Monday night and during the day on Tuesday.Graphic provided by the NWS

New snow expected between tonight an Wednesday could total up to 8 inches along the Ottawa County/Kent County border. Three to 4 inches in forecast for Ludington, Muskegon and Kalamazoo. The Grand Rapids area could see 4 to 6 inches.

Southeast Michigan is expected to get less than an inch of new snow by Tuesday night.

As winter weather continues to grip Michigan, residents can expect slow and treacherous travel conditions to persist through Tuesday. The combination of snow, sleet, and freezing rain has made for hazardous roads, with slick surfaces and reduced visibility.

The Michigan Department of Transportation is urging drivers to use caution and allow for extra time to reach their destinations. Road crews are working around the clock to clear snow and ice from roadways, but conditions are expected to remain challenging.

In addition to slippery roads, power outages are also a concern as heavy snow and ice weigh down power lines. Residents are advised to have emergency supplies on hand and to stay off the roads if possible.

If you must travel, be sure to drive slowly, leave plenty of space between vehicles, and brake gently to avoid skidding. Stay informed of the latest weather updates and road conditions before heading out. Let’s all stay safe and prepared during this winter weather event.

  • Will No. 13 Oregon men’s basketball be able to slow down Braden Smith, No. 17 Purdue?

EUGENE — By far Oregon’s biggest remaining home game this season, a top 20 clash with two-time reigning Big Ten champion Purdue carries significant stakes.

The No. 13 Ducks (15-2, 4-2 Big Ten) are ahead of the No. 17 Boilermakers in the polls, but behind them in the conference standings and NET entering Saturday’s game (12 p.m., NBC) at Matthew Knight Arena.

Both teams could use the Quadrant 1 win to improve their respective resumes come Selection Sunday, with Purdue (14-4, 6-1) arguably in bigger need of the road victory with all of its losses coming away from home. But as jockeying at the top of the Big Ten intensifies these are the matchups that will go a long way to determining the top four seeds in the conference tournament, which all receive double byes.

The matchup between No. 13 Oregon men’s basketball and No. 17 Purdue is set to be an exciting one, with both teams boasting talented players. One key player to watch in this game will be Purdue’s Braden Smith, who has been a standout performer for the Boilermakers this season.

Smith, a skilled guard, has been a scoring machine for Purdue, averaging over 20 points per game and shooting at an impressive clip from beyond the arc. His ability to create his own shot and knock down threes makes him a difficult matchup for any defense.

On the other hand, Oregon has been known for its strong defensive play, holding opponents to low shooting percentages and forcing turnovers. The Ducks will need to rely on their defensive prowess to try and slow down Smith and limit his impact on the game.

It will be a tough task for Oregon to contain Smith, but if they can stick to their defensive principles and make things difficult for him, they may have a chance to come out on top in this highly anticipated matchup. Stay tuned to see if the Ducks can slow down Braden Smith and secure a big win against Purdue.

  • Rudy Giuliani, Slow to Transfer Assets to Election Workers, Could Be Held in Contempt

Rudy Giuliani, Slow to Transfer Assets to Election Workers, Could Be Held in Contempt

After several missed deadlines and extensions, Rudolph W. Giuliani, the former mayor of New York, could be found in contempt of court on Friday for failing to deliver assets worth $11 million to two poll workers he defamed after the 2020 presidential election.

If he is held in contempt, he could face steep penalties, including jail time.

Mr. Giuliani, 80, appeared in federal court in Lower Manhattan to try to justify the stalled handover of some of his most prized possessions, including a penthouse apartment in Manhattan, a collection of Yankees memorabilia, luxury watches and a vintage Mercedes-Benz convertible.

Mr. Giuliani’s presence wasn’t assured. A day before, Mr. Giuliani’s lawyer asked if his client could appear virtually, because of medical issues related to his left knee, as well as breathing problems that he attributed to his time spent at the World Trade Center after the Sept. 11 attacks.

But the judge, Lewis J. Liman, who had a testy exchange with Mr. Giuliani about the case in November, said he would not accept Mr. Giuliani’s testimony unless he attends in person. So the former mayor, in a dark blue suit and glasses, walked into the 15th floor courtroom with a visible limp and a dry cough.

Mr. Giuliani is expected to take the stand sometime after lunch.

The transfer was originally scheduled to take place in October, as a down payment on a $148 million judgment that he was ordered to pay to two Georgia election workers, Ruby Freeman and her daughter, Shaye Moss. Mr. Giuliani had claimed, without evidence, that the women had helped steal the presidential election from Donald J. Trump more than four years ago.

But one deadline after another has passed, and lawyers for the women said they have received only a fraction of the property.

Mr. Giuliani has argued that he has largely complied with the handover request and said that some of the items sought by the plaintiffs are not in his possession.

“The Court should see that I gave everything that I could give,” Mr. Giuliani wrote in a personal plea to Judge Liman, on Christmas Eve.

But lawyers for the women said Mr. Giuliani continues to defy orders, despite repeated warnings from the court.

The plaintiffs have yet to receive legal possession of his 10-room apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, once listed for over $6 million, in part because paperwork has not been updated since his divorce from his ex-wife, Judith Giuliani, according to court filings. The title to Mr. Giuliani’s 1980 Mercedes convertible, which he said was once owned by Lauren Bacall, has yet to be transferred.

And the whereabouts of a signed and framed Joe DiMaggio Yankees jersey, which once hung over Mr. Giuliani’s fireplace, are unknown, Mr. Giuliani has said. Lawyers for the plaintiffs said the item was removed from his apartment sometime before they gained access.

“It is hard to square Mr. Giuliani’s position with reality,” Aaron E. Nathan, one of the plaintiffs’ lawyers, wrote in a letter to the court on Dec. 30. “Enough is enough.”

The hearing marks a low point in Mr. Giuliani’s many legal battles stemming from his stint as Mr. Trump’s personal lawyer. In November, Mr. Giuliani’s lawyers withdrew from the handover case, citing an undisclosed professional ethics reason.

In a recently unsealed letter explaining their departure, one of the lawyers, Kenneth Caruso, said Mr. Giuliani was not cooperating in the discovery process related to a condominium he owns in Palm Beach, Fla., and was withholding access to his electronic devices.

Later this month, Mr. Giuliani also faces the possibility of contempt charges in a Washington, D.C., court, where he has been accused of continuing to publicly make false claims about the two Georgia poll workers.

Former New York City mayor and personal attorney to former President Donald Trump, Rudy Giuliani, is facing potential contempt charges for failing to transfer assets to election workers as ordered by a federal judge.

Giuliani, who has been at the center of controversy surrounding the 2020 presidential election and baseless claims of voter fraud, was ordered to transfer funds to a group of election workers who were suing him for defamation. The workers had alleged that Giuliani had spread false claims about election fraud in an effort to overturn the results of the election.

Despite the court order, Giuliani has been slow to comply with the judge’s directive, prompting the possibility of contempt charges. This latest development adds to the legal troubles facing Giuliani, who is also facing a $1.3 billion defamation lawsuit from Dominion Voting Systems for spreading false claims about their voting machines.

As the legal battles continue to mount for Giuliani, it remains to be seen how this latest development will impact his standing in the legal community and his future legal endeavors. Stay tuned for further updates on this ongoing legal saga.
