Chiefs Reportedly Not Planning to Use Franchise or Transition Tag on Trey Smith

Title: Exclusive Report: Chiefs to Let Trey Smith Hit Free Agency, Sources Say

    Post:

In a surprising turn of events, sources close to the Kansas City Chiefs have revealed that the team is not expected to use the franchise or transition tag on standout offensive lineman Trey Smith. This decision means that Smith will hit free agency and have the opportunity to sign with any team in the league.

Smith, a sixth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, quickly established himself as a key contributor on the Chiefs’ offensive line. His impressive play and versatility have garnered attention from across the league, making him a hot commodity in free agency.

While the Chiefs have expressed interest in re-signing Smith, it appears that they are willing to let him test the market and see what offers he receives. This move could be a calculated gamble by Kansas City, as they may be hoping to bring Smith back at a more team-friendly price after he explores his options.

Fans of the Chiefs will undoubtedly be following this situation closely as the team navigates the complexities of free agency. Will Trey Smith return to Kansas City, or will he find a new home in the NFL? Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain – the Chiefs are in for an interesting offseason. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Minnesota’s Tina Smith will not run for reelection in Senate in 2026

Minnesota’s Tina Smith will not run for reelection in Senate in 2026

U.S. Sen. Tina Smith announced Thursday she will retire after next year, opting against a 2026 bid for another six-year term and putting a Democratic-held seat in play in an increasingly competitive Upper Midwest.

The decision comes after Smith had been conveying her plan to run again for a seat she has held since 2018. She has won two prior Senate elections, including a 5-percentage-point victory when last on the ballot in 2020. She had more than $700,000 in her campaign account to start the year.

“I have loved my job as United States Senator, and also, after 20 years of hard and rewarding work in the public sector, I’m ready to spend more time with my family,” Smith said in a video announcing her decision. Smith added, “This decision is not political, it is entirely personal, but it’s not lost on me that our country is in need of strong progressive leadership right now, maybe more than ever.”

She said she would put her all into the final two years of the term and expressed confidence that a fellow Democrat from a “deep bench of political talent” in Minnesota would take her place after the next election.

Just last week on MPR’s Politics Friday show, Smith reiterated her intention to seek another term. But she stopped short of being definitive when pressed.

“I always worked on the executive branch side. So I had to really learn what it meant to be a legislator. And I have found it tremendously rewarding. I am so grateful for the opportunity to do this work. I love doing the work,” Smith said last Friday. “It’s a lot harder, certainly, when you don’t have the power to accomplish what you want to accomplish, which is the case now.”

In 2024, Republicans gained enough Senate seats to give them 53 seats, wresting the majority that Democrats had had since 2021.

As a senator, Smith concentrated on a set of issues that didn’t always command attention, from laws affecting Native Americans to housing issues and farm policy. She also worked to reduce stigma on mental illness, going public with her own stories of dealing with depression.

Before her time in the Senate, Smith served as lieutenant governor under Gov. Mark Dayton, who appointed her to the Senate vacancy after Sen. Al Franken resigned. Smith, 66, also previously held roles as a gubernatorial chief of staff, a Minneapolis mayoral adviser and the state director of Planned Parenthood of Minnesota.

Originally from New Mexico, Smith made Minnesota her adopted home in the 1980s when she took a job in marketing at General Mills before gravitating toward a political career, mostly as a behind-the-scenes operator before joining Dayton as a running mate in his 2014 reelection campaign.

Smith and her husband, Archie, have two adult sons and four grandchildren — all living in Minneapolis.

    Minnesota Senator Tina Smith speaks

Minnesota Senator Tina Smith speaks before President Joe Biden delivers remarks on the Biden administration’s efforts to rebuild infrastructure at Earth Rider Brewery on Thursday Jan. 25, 2024 in Superior, Wis. The visit comes after $1 billion in federal funding was granted to rebuild the Blatnik Bridge, one of the main connecting roads between Duluth, Minn. and Superior, Wis.

    Erica Dischino for MPR News

Minnesota was already preparing for a blockbuster election in 2026 with races for governor, attorney general, auditor, secretary of state and every legislative seat on the ballot. Both the state House and Senate majorities could come down to a photo finish.

An open U.S. Senate seat could draw millions of dollars more into the state, which will mean stepped-up campaign field operations for both parties and an avalanche of ads aimed at voters.

While Democrats haven’t lost a statewide race since 2006, Republicans have gotten close to ending that streak several times, including razor-close finishes in two 2022 races.

With the expense of competitive U.S. Senate races, the dash to replace Smith will probably start immediately and could cause candidates looking at other offices to shuffle their plans.

One Republican, conservative podcaster Royce White, had already announced a 2026 Senate campaign after losing last year to Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar.

Smith said in the interview with MPR News last week that she felt good about Democratic chances next year, given that history is typically tough on a president’s party in the midterms.

Next year’s race comes midway through President Donald Trump’s second term, although there was a four-year gap between his tenures in the White House. In 2018, midway through Trump’s first term, Republicans gained two Senate seats but his party suffered steep U.S. House losses and Democrats took the majority.

“I suspect that a 2026 midterm election will be very good for Democrats. I think that people are going to be rejecting this kind of (Trump) leadership,” Smith said last week.

Including Minnesota, there are 35 Senate seats on the 2026 ballot. Most of them are currently held by Republicans in heavily GOP states.

Democrats are defending 13 seats. Michigan will also have an open seat due to a Democratic incumbent’s retirement.

Minnesota Senator Tina Smith announced today that she will not seek reelection in the 2026 Senate race. In a statement released by her office, Smith expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to serve the people of Minnesota and stated that she believes it is time for a new voice to represent the state in the Senate.

Smith, a Democrat, was appointed to the Senate in 2018 following the resignation of former Senator Al Franken. She went on to win a special election in 2018 to serve out the remainder of Franken’s term and was reelected to a full six-year term in 2020.

During her time in the Senate, Smith has been a vocal advocate for issues such as healthcare, education, and environmental protection. She has also been a strong supporter of women’s rights and has worked to promote economic opportunity for all Minnesotans.

As Smith prepares to step down from the Senate, speculation has already begun about who will seek to replace her in 2026. Both Democrats and Republicans are expected to field strong candidates in what is sure to be a closely watched and hotly contested race.

For now, though, Minnesotans can thank Tina Smith for her service and look forward to the next chapter in the state’s political history.

  • Super Bowl receiver DeVonta Smith: ‘Seeing the work that he put in, it kind of inspired me’

Cletis Gordon didn’t have a long career in the NFL. The cornerback played in 31 regular-season games and three playoff contests across four seasons, mainly on special teams. But Gordon does have a connection to Super Bowl LIX.

Gordon was a high school standout in Amite, Louisiana, before playing at Jackson State and entering the NFL as an undrafted rookie in 2006.

Amite also is the hometown of Philadelphia wide receiver DeVonta Smith, who’ll be on the field when the Eagles take on the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL championship game at 5:30 p.m. CST Sunday at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.

“I wouldn’t say there was someone I modeled my game after,” Smith said at a Wednesday press conference. “I had guys before me. For me, Cletis Gordon was the guy that was in the NFL when I was growing up from Amite. My first camp going to was his camp. So not even for football, but just seeing the dedication he had, the work that he put in, it kind of inspired me.”

From Amite, Smith has gone on to become an All-American at Alabama, where he caught the winning touchdown pass in overtime in the CFP national-championship game for the 2017 season, won the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award for an undefeated, CFP national-championship team in 2020 and set the SEC career records for receiving yards and touchdown receptions.

RELATED: THE SEC’S TOP 25 RECEIVERS OF THE 21ST CENTURY

Smith entered the NFL as the 10th pick in the 2021 draft, has 308 receptions for 4,011 yards and 27 touchdowns in 63 regular-season games and holds the Philadelphia record for postseason receiving yards.

Now his second Super Bowl has brought him home, with the site of Sunday’s Super Bowl LIX about 70 miles from Amite.

Smith said it was exciting to be able to “play this game on the biggest stage in front of” family and friends.

“It’s a blessing to come back home,” Smith said. “I get to see the family members that I don’t get to see throughout the season. I get some good food.”

Smith said he especially missed jambalaya while pursuing his NFL career.

In his return to his home state, Smith teamed with TCL, the official TV partner of the NFL, to present a 98-inch television to Vincent Sanders, who has been cutting Smith’s hair since the future football star was a little boy.

“I just wanted to express my gratitude and tell you how much I appreciate you,” Smith said in a presentation video. “You’ve always inspired greatness in me. From the same hometown, you’ve been backing me since Day 1 from Alabama to Philly.”

But Sanders won’t be watching Smith on the TV on Sunday. He’ll be in the Superdome.

“I built a shelf in my barber shop in Louisiana,” Sanders told the Philadelphia Tribune, “and I put a plasma TV on top, and it had four shelves. When DeVonta was little, he told me, ‘One day, that’s where I’m going to put the Heisman.’”

Smith’s first Super Bowl came two years ago in Glendale Arizona, where Philadelphia lost to Kansas City 38-35. Smith had seven receptions for 100 yards in that game.

Smith has played against the Chiefs two other times. He had seven receptions for 122 yards in a 42-30 loss on Oct. 3, 2021, and six receptions for 99 yards in a 21-17 victory on Nov. 20, 2023.

In Kansas City’s 65 seasons, 152 players have collected at least 300 receiving yards against the Chiefs. But only two in that group have averaged at least 100 receiving yards per game against Kansas City – Pro Football Hall of Fame member Andre Johnson with 36 receptions for 617 yards in six games with the Houston Texans and Smith with 20 receptions for 321 yards in three games with the Eagles.

But Smith isn’t concerned about his stats on Sunday.

“I think people overlook the most important stat, which is winning the game,” Smith said. “We don’t care if it’s us running the ball, passing the ball. We’re going to do whatever’s working.”

DeVonta Smith, the star wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles, recently opened up about the impact that former teammate and mentor, Julio Jones, had on his career. In an interview leading up to the Super Bowl, Smith reflected on the time he spent with Jones at Alabama and how it shaped him into the player he is today.

“Seeing the work that he put in, it kind of inspired me,” Smith said of Jones. “He was always the first one in the building and the last one to leave. He never took a practice off and always gave 110% on the field. That dedication and work ethic really rubbed off on me and pushed me to be better every day.”

Smith and Jones formed a dynamic duo at Alabama, with Jones taking on a mentorship role for the younger receiver. Smith credits Jones with teaching him valuable lessons about the game and helping him develop his skills both on and off the field.

Now, as Smith prepares to play in his first Super Bowl, he looks back on his time with Jones with gratitude and appreciation. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without Julio,” Smith said. “He pushed me to be the best version of myself and I will always be grateful for that.”

As Smith gears up to take the field on the biggest stage in football, he carries with him the lessons and inspiration he gained from his time with Jones. With his sights set on victory, Smith is ready to showcase the hard work and dedication that has brought him to this moment.

  • Stephen A. Smith Shouldn’t Have To Beg LeBron James to End Bronny James Experiment

Bronny James received some meaningful regular season minutes in Tuesday night’s loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, and it did not go as planned.

On Wednesday, Stephen A. Smith had to sound off on ESPN’s First Take about just how poorly Bronny played.

“I am pleading with LeBron James as a father. Stop this. We all know Bronny James is in the NBA because of his dad,” Smith said.

Bronny played 15 minutes in Tuesday’s loss, was 0-for-5 from the field, had three rebounds and an assist that was good for a -8 rating in the box score. After the game, he told reporters that he was surprised by getting real minutes in the first quarter, and head coach JJ Redick apologized, stating that he put Bronny in a very tough spot.

But Smith’s rant on this entire saga was perfect. The Los Angeles Lakers gave the sports world and the James family an incredible moment on NBA Opening Night when Bronny and LeBron became the first father and son duo in NBA history.

But this has become the most-discussed second-round pick in the history of the sport. Bronny was selected No. 55 overall. It’s wildly unfair to expect him to contribute meaningful minutes to any NBA roster, let alone the Lakers, who are eyeing a playoff spot in the Western Conference.

There’s no need for him to be on this stage, regardless of how banged up or undermanned the Lakers might be.

ESPN’s top basketball talker should not have to be forced to get on his show and break down in gruesome detail just how bad the No. 55 overall pick is playing because it’s to be expected.

Leave nepotism out of it for a second. We’re talking about a 20-year-old kid who did not play much college basketball, has some innate tools and traits of a good basketball player, but is a complete project that needs time to develop. But because of his last name—and because of who his dad is—top sports talk personalities are forced to talk about him after every single failed outing. It’s unfair to everybody involved.

It’s clear that he needs to develop—and that was happening with a few good performances strung together in the G League with South Bay.

Let Bronny develop. At this point, there are countless G League success stories of players that were not ready to play in the Association right away, but when their time came, they were ready to be everyday NBA contributors.

Right now, Bronny playing meaningful NBA minutes is nothing more than a gimmick and it’s a little bit sad. Sure, he worked tremendously hard. We’ve seen that he has all of the tools required to be an elite player in the G League, even as a rookie.

Allow him to continue his development down there, out of the spotlight, and one day he could be playing meaningful NBA minutes as a contributor.

Stephen A. Smith Shouldn’t Have To Beg LeBron James to End Bronny James Experiment

In a recent episode of ESPN’s “First Take,” Stephen A. Smith made a plea to LeBron James to end the controversial Bronny James experiment. The experiment involves LeBron’s son, Bronny James, playing high school basketball while constantly being under the spotlight and scrutiny of the media and fans.

Smith argued that Bronny James should be allowed to grow and develop as a player without the added pressure of living up to his father’s legacy. He believes that LeBron should prioritize his son’s well-being and future over his own desire to see him succeed in the spotlight.

While LeBron has been supportive of Bronny’s basketball career, Smith believes that it’s time for him to step in and protect his son from the excessive attention and pressure that comes with being the son of an NBA legend.

It’s clear that Stephen A. Smith is passionate about this issue and he shouldn’t have to beg LeBron James to do what’s best for his son. Let’s hope that LeBron listens to Smith’s plea and makes the right decision for Bronny’s future.

  • Geno Smith linked in trade with Seahawks and one surprising team

Geno Smith wants an extension from the Seattle Seahawks. Of course, he does and he should. Every person who works for a company wants to know their future in that company is secure. The question is how much Smith wants from Seattle and how much Seattle wants to pay him.

Smith is also 34 years old, though he was a backup for so long that he didn’t take as much punishment as most other quarterbacks his age. Sure, he has taken a lot of hits since becoming QB1 for Seattle in 2022 because the offensive line has been so poor, but he sat on the bench for a half-decade before that. The quarterback also has a great arm and throws with accuracy.

If Seattle doesn’t want Smith around long-term, there is likely another team willing to take a chance on him. There is no guarantee, though, that should Seattle entertain a trade for Smith another team would give much back in return for the quarterback. There are several reasons for this, including the fact Smith could hit free agency after the 2025 season.

Could a trade of Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith to the Cleveland Browns be an option?

One NFL beat reporter has an interesting idea on one team that might be willing to give up a bit to get Smith. Dan Labbe of Cleveland.com suggested recently on 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland that the Browns might want Smith. The scenario makes sense, in theory.

The Browns presumed starting quarterback Deshaun Watson tore his Achilles near the end of the season, and he could miss all of 2025. Plus, Watson has not been very good for Cleveland since going to the team in a trade with the Houston Texans in 2022. He has torn his Achilles before, so he is definitely an injury risk for the rest of his career.

Cleveland could add Smith, and have him be the starter for the team, while Watson sat out the entire year. If Smith does well, the Browns could think of signing him to an extension. Releasing Watson in 2026 would still cost Cleveland a lot of money, but the number would be down from $99,799,000 in 2025 to $26,864,000. Teams have taken more of a cap hit than previously (i.e., Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos in 2024).

What would the Seahawks get in return? The Browns pick second overall in the 2025 NFL draft, and Seattle is not going to be able to get that pick for Smith. Cleveland does pick first in the second round (pick 33 overall) and that, along with a later-round choice, might be good enough. Seattle would then start Sam Howell at quarterback next season.

General manager John Schneider could also package picks 18 (the choice the Seahawks currently own in the first round) and pick 33 and try to move up in the draft to potentially choose quarterbacks Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward. That is not likely (neither is the proposed scenario put forth by Labbe), but anything is possible.

    More Seahawks news and analysis:

Rumors are swirling that quarterback Geno Smith could be on the move again, this time to the Seattle Seahawks. However, one surprising team has also emerged as a potential landing spot for the former New York Jet.

According to sources, the Seahawks are looking to add depth at the quarterback position and have expressed interest in Smith as a backup to Russell Wilson. Smith, who has shown flashes of potential throughout his career, could provide valuable experience and leadership to the Seahawks’ quarterback room.

But the real shocker comes from the Miami Dolphins, who have reportedly reached out to the Seahawks about a potential trade for Smith. With Tua Tagovailoa still developing and uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position, the Dolphins see Smith as a potential veteran presence who could compete for the starting job.

While nothing is set in stone just yet, it will be interesting to see where Geno Smith ends up next season and how he could impact his new team. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Jaden Smith Wears House on Head

Jaden Smith is certainly a man in black.

For the 2025 Grammys held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles Feb. 2, the 26-year-old—whose parents are Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith—arrived at the event wearing the ultimate accessory: A Black castle covering most of his head.

This head-turning piece accompanied the “Icon” musician’s otherwise classic Louis Vuitton look which included a black tuxedo, white button-down and black tie. (And he’s not the only one on the red carpet: For every celeb at the annual show, head on over here.)

The “Ninety” vocalist’s latest ensemble comes as he’s stepped out more specifically to support his dad, who is slated to make a rare appearance as a presenter during music’s biggest night.

However, the look isn’t all too far-fetched for the creative, as Jaden himself has proudly shared he is always “actively working on being more weird.”

“I went through a lot of my life trying to be normal,” he told Complex last October. “It was a really big deal for me for a long time that people thought that I was normal. And that bothered me after a while. I started to feel like people didn’t really understand me or see me, and I wasn’t really trying to show anybody that.”

Jaden Smith, known for his eclectic fashion choices, turned heads once again as he was spotted wearing a house on his head. Yes, you read that right – a house!

The actor and musician was seen walking down the streets of Los Angeles with a small model house balanced precariously on his head. Decked out in his signature quirky style, Jaden paired the unconventional accessory with a bold patterned shirt, baggy pants, and chunky sneakers.

While some onlookers were left scratching their heads in confusion, others praised Jaden for his daring and avant-garde fashion sense. After all, who else could pull off wearing a house on their head with such confidence?

Whether it’s pushing boundaries on the red carpet or making a statement on the streets, Jaden Smith continues to prove that he is a true trendsetter in the world of fashion. Who knows what he’ll come up with next? Stay tuned to see what wild and wacky outfit he’ll rock next!

  • Jaden Smith Is Castle at 2025 Grammys

The Grammys are always an opportunity for celebrities to experiment with their style, but nothing could have prepared us for Jaden Smith showing up as a literal castle. Like, to be clear, he arrived in a suit with a castle headpiece that has a little hole cut out for his face.

Jaden’s sister Willow also arrived at the Grammys, wearing an embellished matching bra and underwear set, paired with an overcoat and heels:

FYI, Jaden and Willow’s dad Will Smith will be at the Grammys tonight, while Willow’s up for several awards—including Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical—for Empathogen. Willow spoke to Vogue Australia a bit about the album, saying “I’m just excited for the whole thing, bro. I’m excited for people to hear what I can really do, and how I’m stretching and pushing myself to become a better musician. I want people to hear it, and feel loved, and feel understood. And like they’re not alone, because they’re not.”

She also said “I felt that during Coping Mechanism I was expressing so much anger and confusion. Because the core of my creativity comes from a place of curiosity and compassion, you’re still gonna feel those twinges in the lyrics and melodies of [that album], because that’s just a part of me, but the majority is very dark and expressive of where I was at the time. This new album is really an ode to me just trying to go in there and be like, okay, you let out your anger, you expressed all this stuff—now what? You know what I’m saying?”

At the 2025 Grammys, Jaden Smith stole the show with his performance that can only be described as pure magic. Dressed in a shimmering silver suit and surrounded by a backdrop of crumbling stone walls, Smith transformed into a modern-day castle, exuding an aura of strength and power.

As he belted out his latest hit single, the audience was captivated by his mesmerizing stage presence and undeniable talent. With each note he hit, it was as if the walls of the castle were echoing his voice, creating a truly unforgettable musical experience.

Smith’s performance at the 2025 Grammys will go down in history as one of the most iconic and memorable moments in music award show history. His ability to seamlessly blend artistry, fashion, and theatrics truly set him apart as a visionary in the music industry.

As the final notes of his performance faded away, the audience erupted into thunderous applause, recognizing Jaden Smith as a true force to be reckoned with in the world of music. And as he took his final bow, it was clear that he had cemented his place as a musical legend for years to come.

  • Wrexham sign Reading striker Sam Smith in club record transfer

Wrexham have broken their transfer record to sign Reading striker Sam Smith.

The 26-year-old has signed a contract until the summer of 2028 after the two League One clubs agreed an undisclosed fee.

Phil Parkinson has been keen to add a striker for the last two transfer windows as the club owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney chase an unprecedented third consecutive promotion.

Smith arrives at the SToK Cae Ras with 11 goals in 25 league appearances to his name this season for Reading.

Wrexham’s joint top scorers with six goals apiece are central defender Max Cleworth and midfielder Elliot Lee, one ahead of Jack Marriott who has only recently returned from a broken leg.

“Sam’s a player we’ve been pursuing for a while,” says Parkinson. “He’s a striker who’s done really well over the last few seasons and he’s at a great age.

“He’s a fantastic addition to the squad.”

Wrexham’s previous transfer record fee stands at the £590,000 fee paid for West Bromwich Albion striker Mo Faal last summer.

Smith is expected to be the first of two further additions before the window closes on Monday at 11pm. Wrexham are understood to be keen on another forward.

Smith came through the Reading academy but left to join Cambridge United in 2021. He returned to the Select Car Leasing Stadium two years later.

“I’m excited to be a part of the journey now and I want to try and help the club achieve its ambitions,” he said.

The Welsh club had previously targeted Sheffield Wednesday striker Michael Smith, making a big play for the 32-year-old last summer. But the Championship club were reluctant to let Smith leave in the last two windows.
