X Games Rookie Rocco Jamieson Continues NZ Medal Streak, Claiming Bronze in Snowboard Big Air

New Zealand’s medal streak at the Aspen X Games shows no signs of slowing, with 18-year-old Rocco Jamieson of Wānaka earning a bronze medal in the men’s snowboard big air during his debut appearance.
The competition was fierce, with unprecedented progression on display. A score in the 90s during playoffs wasn’t enough to secure a spot in the finals, and history was made with the first-ever 2160 rotation (six full spins) landed in competition—followed by two more variations from other riders.
As the youngest competitor, Jamieson stood out with his unique style. In playoffs, he wowed the judges with a frontside 1800 bloody Dracula grab, scoring an impressive 94.00 and advancing to finals in second place.
Finals delivered the cutting-edge progression X Games is known for. Hiroto Ogiwara of Japan made history with a 2340 mute grab—six and a half full rotations—earning the top score of the day at 97.33.
Jamieson landed his frontside 1800 bloody Dracula grab again with a flawless take-off and landing. On his second run, he attempted a 2160 but couldn’t quite stick the landing. Despite this, his earlier performance was enough to secure the bronze medal in a field stacked with the world’s best.

Ogiwara claimed gold with his groundbreaking run, while fellow Japanese rider and 2024 X Games gold medallist Taiga Hasegawa took silver.
Before the big air medals were even awarded, Jamieson was back in action, competing in the snowboard knuckle huck event. He finished a commendable fourth, rounding off a remarkable debut and a historic day for New Zealand snowboarding at X Games.
The excitement continues tomorrow in Aspen, with Kiwi athletes competing in women’s ski slopestyle, men’s ski big air, and men’s ski superpipe.
Wtach Ricco’s run here
Rising star Rocco Jamieson has been making waves at the X Games in New Zealand, claiming yet another medal to add to his collection. The rookie snowboarder impressed judges and fans alike with his performance in the Big Air competition, ultimately securing a well-deserved bronze medal.
Jamieson’s smooth style and fearless approach to big tricks have quickly made him a crowd favorite, and his success at such a prestigious event is a testament to his skill and determination. With this latest podium finish, the young talent is proving that he is a force to be reckoned with in the world of snowboarding.
As Jamieson continues to make a name for himself on the competitive circuit, it’s clear that we can expect big things from this talented athlete in the future. Congratulations to Rocco Jamieson on his impressive performance at the X Games, and best of luck in his future endeavors on the slopes.

Chloe Kim won her seventh X Games Aspen women’s snowboard halfpipe title (and eighth title across all X Games sites), breaking her tie with Kelly Clark for the most in history.
Kim, the two-time Olympic gold medalist, scored 93.33 points in her first of two final runs. It included the first double cork in X Games women’s halfpipe history, and it held up as the best score through both rounds.
She also landed the same cab double cork 1080 in her second run — a victory lap with the win already assured — before falling on her next trick, getting up quickly and smiling as she rode to the bottom of the pipe.
“I am having so much fun,” Kim said on the broadcast. “I have to be honest, I was in a bit of a rut. I really did not enjoy snowboarding for a couple of years. I think this year I really wanted to change that and just do runs that felt good to me, do tricks that felt good to me. It kind of has been working out, no complaints.”
Fellow American Maddie Mastro took second with an 89.66-point run that included her signature double crippler (two backflips).
Kim is now one title shy of Shaun White’s overall record of eight X Games Aspen halfpipe golds. Kim has seven titles at the annual event in Aspen, plus one from an X Games competition in Oslo in 2016.
After repeating as Olympic gold medalist in 2022, Kim took one season off from competing.
She returned last season and became the first woman to land a 1260 in competition. Then last Saturday, she and Mastro became the first women to land a double cork at any competition in going one-two at the Laax Open in Switzerland.
In 2026, Kim can become the first snowboarder to win gold at three consecutive Olympics.

Also Saturday, Nick Goepper led a U.S. men’s ski halfpipe podium sweep with Alex Ferreira and Hunter Hess.
Goepper, a three-time Olympic slopestyle medalist, spent 10 months retired in 2023, then switched to halfpipe.
American Red Gerard repeated as X Games men’s snowboard slopestyle champion, adding to his 2018 Olympic gold medal.
Gerard’s winning run included a switch backside triple cork 1620 and a backside 1800, according to the broadcast.
Canadian Mark McMorris was second for his 24th career Winter X medal across all sites and 20th in Aspen, both outright records.
The world’s top snowboarders and freeskiers stay in Aspen for the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix next weekend, airing on NBC Sports.
Chloe Kim, the 21-year-old snowboarding phenom, has once again proven why she is one of the best in the sport by winning her 8th X Games snowboard halfpipe title. Not only did she take home the gold medal, but she also broke the record for the most X Games snowboard halfpipe titles ever won by a female athlete.Kim’s incredible performance on the halfpipe left fans and competitors in awe as she effortlessly executed flawless tricks and spins, showcasing her incredible skill and talent. Her victory solidifies her status as a snowboarding legend and cements her place in X Games history.
Congratulations to Chloe Kim on her remarkable achievement and for inspiring a new generation of snowboarders to push the limits and reach for their dreams. We can’t wait to see what she accomplishes next on the slopes. #ChloeKim #XGames #SnowboardingLegend

#Chloe #Kim #wins #8th #Games #snowboard #halfpipe #title #breaks #recordNew dad Scotty James conquers triple cork to claim X Games four-peat in halfpipe snowboard final
Australia’s Scotty James celebrates on the podium after winning the men’s snowboard superpipe final at X Games Aspen on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025, at Buttermilk Ski Area.
Austin Colbert/The Aspen TimesThe legacy of Scotty James seems to grow each year, even though his star power can’t get much brighter. The same can be said for his riding, which always seems to improve despite him being a 30-year-old with a 6-foot frame that gravity isn’t always fond of.
On Thursday night, the first day of X Games Aspen 2025, the Australian added to his fame by completing a four-peat in the men’s snowboard halfpipe final at Buttermilk Ski Area.
“I’m feeling unbelievable. A four-peat — I couldn’t have dreamt of this, so I’m absolutely stoked,” James said after. “To be here in Aspen is the best, always.”
This was the seventh X Games Aspen gold medal for James, who is also on the board of directors for the action sports franchise. He won his first gold in 2017 before going back-to-back in 2019 and 2020. He was second to Japan’s Yuto Totsuka in 2021 but hasn’t moved from the top step of the podium since again winning gold in 2022, and each year since.
This was not the first four-peat in superpipe history, as the legendary Shaun White won six straight from 2008-2013.
Part of James’ winning run on Thursday was the feared triple cork, a challenging trick that requires three head-over-heels rotations in the air. Japan’s Ayumu Hirano made a name for himself for his triple corks at the 2022 Olympics, which he won over James and Switzerland’s Jan Scherrer, but the rest of the field has slowly caught up since Beijing.
“I knew that I just had to go for it if I wanted to win, and that was my mindset,” James said. “I just said, ‘You know what, either crash or win.’ That was my mentality, and fortunately, we got it done.”

Austin Colbert/The Aspen Times Australia’s Scotty James celebrates after completing what would be his winning run in the men’s snowboard superpipe final at X Games Aspen on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025, at Buttermilk Ski Area. (Austin Colbert/The Aspen Times) Austin Colbert/The Aspen Times X Games debuted a new format on Thursday, with eight riders being given two runs during a “playoff” and the top four placers moved to the two-run finals. And that finals field was stacked, with James, Hirano, Totsuka, and Telluride’s own Lucas Foster making it in.
James did what he needed to on his first run of finals and was able to drop in for a victory lap on his second. His 96.33 held off Totsuka’s 93.66 and Hirano’s 92.33, both scored on their second runs. Foster wasn’t able to put down a clean run in finals and just missed the podium in fourth.
All four riders will likely return next week for the World Cup and Grand Prix at Buttermilk.
For James, it was also his first X Games since the birth of his first child, Leo, in October.
“It’s unbelievable,” he said. “Leo is probably at home having a sleep. He doesn’t care at all. He just wants mom at the moment. But I love being a dad, and being at the top of the podium is absolutely surreal.”
Australian snowboarder Scotty James made history at the X Games Aspen on Sunday, claiming his fourth consecutive gold medal in the men’s halfpipe event. The 27-year-old new dad put on a sensational performance, landing a flawless triple cork to secure the top spot on the podium. His impressive run earned him a score of 97.33, well ahead of the competition.
James, who became a father for the first time just a few months ago, dedicated his victory to his newborn son, saying that becoming a dad has given him a new perspective and motivation to succeed.
With this win, James solidified his status as one of the best halfpipe snowboarders in the world. His incredible feat of winning four consecutive gold medals at the X Games is a testament to his talent, dedication, and hard work.
Congratulations to Scotty James on his historic achievement, and we look forward to seeing what he has in store for the rest of the season.
