On Wednesday, January 29, 2025, Maine residents woke up to a winter wonderland – and a nightmare for their morning commute. A snowstorm had blanketed the state overnight, dumping several inches of snow and creating treacherous driving conditions.

Roads were slick and visibility was low, leading to numerous accidents and delays. Commuters found themselves crawling along highways and side streets, trying to navigate the slippery terrain.

Schools and businesses were forced to delay openings or close altogether, as plow crews worked tirelessly to clear the roads. Public transportation services were also impacted, with buses running behind schedule and some routes canceled.

Despite the challenges, Mainers showed their resilience and determination, helping each other out and braving the elements to get to their destinations. As the snow continued to fall throughout the day, residents were reminded of the harsh reality of winter in Maine – but also the sense of community that comes with it.

Stay safe and stay warm, Maine!

  • Once-in-a-lifetime snowstorm hits Gulf Coast, with record-breaking snowfall in Florida

For much of the Gulf Coast, the snowstorm that’s expected to end soon was a once-in-a-lifetime snowstorm.

Many areas saw more snow than they have in at least 130 years, making this truly a historic event.

Florida just saw the most snow on record, with a preliminary 8.8 inches observed in Milton, which is north of Pensacola. This is the highest snow total on record for the state, according to the National Weather Service.

An ABC News graphic shows the radar for the southeastern United States at 5 a.m. ET on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025.

    ABC News

Snow reports from the last 24 hours include about 1.2 inches in Houston, Texas. That’s the official number because it was taken at the city’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, but the southeast part of the city saw over 4 inces. The NWS said it “is one of the top snowstorms to impact the Houston area.”

Elsewhere in the South, the snowfall was higher. In Louisiana, Baton Rouge saw 7.6 inches, New Orleans saw 8 inches and Lake Charles saw at least 4.8 inches, with up to 6 inches in some areas. Lafayette has seen 9 inches.

The snowfall the most recent highest total in New Orleans was from New Year’s Even in 1963 when 2.7 inches fell.

The 7.5 inches that fell in Mobile, Alabama, and the 7.6 inches in Pensacola, Florida, were all-time records.

Snow is still falling early Wednesday along the coastal Carolinas, in Georgia and in northern Florida.

About 5 inches have so far been reported in parts of coastal North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Even North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, said it’s seen 3.8 inches — and it’s still snowing there.

The snow is expected to end around 7 a.m. for the east coast, exiting Charleston, South Carolina, and Wilmington, North Carolina, last.

Rain will continue in the Florida peninsula into the afternoon, heading south and exciting Miami, with lingering spot showers expected through the evening and again on Thursday for the Florida peninsula.

The Gulf Coast is no stranger to severe weather, but the recent snowstorm that hit the region has left residents in awe. Record-breaking snowfall has blanketed Florida, a state known for its warm weather and sandy beaches.

The once-in-a-lifetime storm brought several inches of snow to cities like Tampa, Orlando, and even Miami, where snow is a rare occurrence. Schools and businesses have been forced to close as residents navigate the icy roads and frigid temperatures.

While the snow has brought excitement and wonder to many, it has also caused challenges for those unaccustomed to such weather. Power outages and road closures have made travel difficult, and emergency services have been working overtime to assist those in need.

Despite the difficulties, the snow has brought a sense of unity to the Gulf Coast, as neighbors come together to help one another shovel driveways, clear sidewalks, and check in on those who may need assistance.

As the snow begins to melt and temperatures rise, the Gulf Coast will return to its usual warm and sunny weather. But for now, residents are enjoying this once-in-a-lifetime snowstorm and the memories it has created.

  • VIDEO: Snow blankets beaches along Gulf Coast during historic snowstorm

GALVESTON, Texas – Photos and videos from beaches along the Gulf Coast showed a rare and stunning sight Tuesday: snow

In Galveston, video from Galveston.com showed snow blanketing the beach, concealing the sand underneath. Waves crashed in the distance, with dark, gloomy skies behind them.

States from Texas to the Carolinas are experiencing a once-in-a-generation snowstorm this week. It has already resulted in a Blizzard Warning being issued in Louisiana for the first time ever.

More visuals from Galveston showed the snow-covered beach, a sharp contrast to the usually green, sunny landscape. Reports from the National Weather Service indicate the area has received about 1-3 inches of snow.

During the snow, people took pictures of the snowy scene next to the statue memorializing the 1900 Galveston hurricane, known as the deadliest hurricane in U.S. history.

It was the snowiest day in decades at William P. Hobby Airport in Houston, where 3 inches of snow fell, according to NWS data. The last time that much snow fell in the area was in 1949.

  • Lake effect snowstorm leaves traffic at a standstill on I-90 Monday night

HAMBURG, NY (WKBW) — On Monday evening, a severe lake-effect snowstorm caused traffic standstills and dangerous conditions across Western New York, prompting Governor Kathy Hochul to declare a state of emergency.

Road conditions were treacherous and Richard Holcomb’s husband, Mark, was among those stuck in traffic on I-90.

The lake effect snow and bitterly cold temperatures impacted several counties including Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming, and Allegany.

“I think he left here…and he calls me 15 minutes into the drive and I look and low and behold we are at a standstill,” said Richard Holcomb, describing his husband’s experience.

Acting Mayor of Buffalo Chris Scanlon warned of “single-digit temperatures and subzero wind chills that will make for very dangerous conditions outside.”

“It’s a feeling of total helplessness because I couldn’t say anything to make it better,” Holcomb added, expressing his concern for his husband’s safety.

The city’s snow-fighting fleet has been activated to clear roads, with pre-staging in South Buffalo, which is expected to bear the brunt of the storm.

Hamburg EMS Director Sean Crotty advised residents to stay home and allow plows to clear the roads, emphasizing the importance of having emergency kits in vehicles.

As the storm continues to impact the region, residents are urged to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel.

“Don’t try to brave it because sometimes it pays off and sometimes it doesn’t,” Holcomb advised, hoping for safer conditions for his husband’s return journey.

On Monday night, a powerful lake effect snowstorm swept through the region, causing chaos on Interstate 90. The sudden and intense snowfall left traffic at a standstill for miles, with cars and trucks struggling to navigate the treacherous road conditions.

Drivers reported whiteout conditions and dangerously slick roads, leading to numerous accidents and spinouts. Emergency crews worked tirelessly to assist those stranded on the highway, but the sheer volume of vehicles affected made progress slow.

As the storm continued to dump heavy snow, authorities urged motorists to stay off the roads if possible and to exercise extreme caution if travel was necessary. The winter weather advisory remained in effect throughout the night, warning of continued hazardous conditions.

By morning, the snow had finally stopped falling, but the aftermath of the storm was still being felt. Crews worked diligently to clear the roads and tow away stranded vehicles, but the cleanup process would take time.

The lake effect snowstorm served as a stark reminder of the unpredictable and unforgiving nature of winter weather in this region. Drivers were urged to stay informed, stay safe, and be prepared for whatever Mother Nature may throw their way.

  • Snowstorm ices 3-day planning huddle in Beaufort set to address city’s hot-button issues

A winter storm that’s expected to bring bone-chilling temperatures and possibly snow to the Lowcountry has postponed a three-day planning retreat in Beaufort.

The city’s five elected council members and City Manager Scott Marshall and his staff had been scheduled to tackle some of the toughest issues facing the city of 14,000 on the Beaufort River from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday at the Beaufort County Black Chamber of Commerce, 711 Bladen St.

The retreat is held annually to set planning, building and spending priorities, Mayor Phil Cromer said. The sessions help the city come up with a game plan for the coming year, he said, and marching orders for city staff.

“I hope it’s a very open, robust free-flowing of ideas,” Cromer said.

But Marshall said later on Friday afternoon that the city had decided to postpone the retreat because of a looming storm.

The National Weather Service said Friday the storm will bring extreme cold to the region on Tuesday and Wednesday with lows in the lower 20s. Windchill values as low as 15 degrees are possible Wednesday, the Weather Service said.

While the chance of snow Tuesday night was listed at 70%, the amount of freezing precipitation the area may receive still was uncertain as of Friday afternoon.

A new date, time, and location for the retreat will be determined and communicated as soon as possible, the city said.

Prior to the decision to postpone the retreat, Cromer noted that the predicted snow and sleet might make transportation to the retreat meetings difficult for some — “even for me” — because South Carolina drivers don’t encounter ice- and snow-covered roads very often.

During the retreat — whenever it occurs — current and emerging capital needs across the growing city known for its historic neighborhoods will be a major discussion topic, including stormwater drainage systems, which are a continual challenge for a city susceptible to storms and flooding.

One goal of the retreat will be coming up with a list of priorities for capital projects, Cromer said.

One high-interest issue with the general public that will likely be discussed as well is the future of Waterfront Park, Cromer said.

Last April, the city learned that the concrete pilings that support the park and the seawall are in tough shape. Repairs or even replacement of that infrastructure, which lies below the water line, are necessary with the cost expected to be in the millions.

“I think on most people’s minds is, where are we headed with Waterfront Park?” Cromer said. “That’s a biggie.”

The City Council also will discuss revisions to the development code; hear from department heads and partners such as Dominion Energy and the Historic Beaufort Foundation; and issues that are important to individual council members.

Time will be set aside for public comment at the close of each day’s meeting, which also will be livestreamed on the city’s Facebook page.

The retreat will be facilitated by Bill Stipp, a Phoenix-area-based public sector consultant who specializes in strategic planning.

You can find the full agenda at cityofbeaufort.org.

Residents of Beaufort, brace yourselves for a snowstorm that is about to put a freeze on the city’s 3-day planning huddle. The anticipated storm has forced city officials to rethink their strategy and prioritize safety above all else.

The planning huddle, which was set to address Beaufort’s hot-button issues, such as housing affordability, transportation, and environmental sustainability, will now be postponed until further notice. The city’s top priority is to ensure the safety of its residents and employees during the impending snowstorm.

Despite the setback, city officials are determined to reschedule the planning huddle as soon as possible and continue their work on addressing the pressing issues facing Beaufort. In the meantime, residents are encouraged to stay informed about weather updates and take necessary precautions to stay safe during the storm.

Stay tuned for more updates on the rescheduled planning huddle and how Beaufort plans to tackle its hot-button issues in the coming days. Stay safe, Beaufort! #BeaufortSnowstorm #PlanningHuddle #SafetyFirst.

  • Snowstorm overnight expected to bring up to 10 inches of snow – Boston News, Weather, Sports

BOSTON (WHDH) – A storm system expected to arrive in Massachusetts Sunday night is set to dump up to 10 inches of snow in some parts of the state before it makes its way out of the region.

  • Saquon’s Girlfriend Predicts Sunshine In Snowstorm for Playoff

Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon as the Eagles prep to play host the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Divisional Round playoff game on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field?

The kickoff is set for 2:20 p.m. E.T. … and snow is in the forecast – maybe lots of it – as a major storm could be hitting much of the East Coast by mid-afternoon.

One report suggests we could be looking at up to six inches of the white stuff.

In terms of the Eagles game plan? That might points to strategic nugget, with Philly keeping the ball on the ground … a fine plan when you employ NFL rushing champ Saquon Barkley.

He’s ready … and it seems Barkley’s longtime girlfriend, Anna Congdon, is prepared to go on Sunday. A social media influencer, this is her time to shine, too, in a sense, and she has developed a handy habit of turning heads on social media before kickoff throughout the 2024 season.

    https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=4RHrxI_0yGx3dnV00

Congdon has been dating Saquon since their days together Penn State and is of course Barkley’s biggest fan. Indeed, when recently he broke the 2,000 yards mark during the regular season against the Dallas Cowboys, she offered up a lovely bit of encouragement that might be convenient today.

“You outshine the morning sun,” Congdon wrote of her sweetheart.

Saquon’s Girlfriend Predicts Sunshine In Snowstorm for Playoff

In a surprising turn of events, Saquon Barkley’s girlfriend, Anna, has made a bold prediction for the upcoming playoff game. Despite the forecast calling for a snowstorm, Anna insists that there will be sunshine on the field when Saquon takes the field.

Many are skeptical of Anna’s prediction, citing the accuracy of weather forecasts and the unpredictability of Mother Nature. However, Anna remains steadfast in her belief that the sun will shine down on Saquon and the team, bringing them luck and success in the game.

As the playoff game approaches, all eyes will be on the weather forecast and Anna’s prediction. Will she be proven right, or will the snowstorm prevail? Only time will tell, but one thing is for certain – Saquon’s girlfriend is a true believer in the power of positivity and sunshine, even in the midst of a snowstorm. • Snowstorm headed to Northeast, including DC, Philly, NYC and Boston

A wintry pattern from late Saturday to Monday morning will dump enough snow to shovel and plow in areas from West Virginia to Maine as well as trigger a slew of travel problems on interstates and at airports, AccuWeather meteorologists warn.

Much colder air will filter into Northeast states after a fairly mild start to the weekend, with a weak storm bringing some rain and drizzle along the coast. That fresh Arctic air will pave the way for a second storm later this weekend, which will bring snow to many areas.

The snow will cover streets, major highways and prompt deicing delays at area airports. A surge in flight cancellations is also likely with the storm impacting most major hubs in the Northeast.

“This will likely end up being the first general snowstorm for portions along and north of the Interstate 95 corridor for the mid-Atlantic and New England, as storms this winter have not hit all of the areas with significant snow all at once,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Tom Kines said. “Portions of eastern New England have received hardly any snow at all so far this winter.”

The steadiest swath of snow may be just to the northwest of Interstate 95 from Washington, D.C. to Boston. Locations farther north and west of the major artery in the more traditional snowy spots of the northern and western suburbs of the major cities can also pick up a round of heavy snowfall from this event.

This zone is forecast to receive 3-6 inches of snow, with the storm’s fast-forward speed preventing much heavier amounts along this corridor. However, some spots in the mountains of West Virginia and from east-central Pennsylvania through southeastern Maine can pick up over 6 inches.

“We are very confident that snowfall amounts will tend to ramp up from southwest to northeast in the region with the greatest amounts likely in New England,” AccuWeather Chief On-Air Meteorologist Bernie Rayno said.

The snow will move into Philadelphia for tailgating ahead of the National Football League playoff game at Lincoln Financial Field, creating slippery conditions and poor visibility that can be a factor in the game. Snowfall rates of one-half to three-quarters of an inch per hour are possible later in the afternoon and evening for a time around Philadelphia and much of I-95.

Snowfall with the storm could reach 1 foot in the mountains of New England and, depending on the storm track, parts of the Poconos in northeastern Pennsylvania and the Catskill Mountains in southeastern New York state could approach that number as well. A sharp northwestern cutoff to the accumulating snow is likely with the storm, so areas in western Pennsylvania and western and central New York may receive little or no snow prior to the ramp-up of lake-effect snow.

“There is some data that suggests the storm could strengthen fast enough to be dubbed a bomb cyclone,” Kines said.

The storm’s central barometric pressure would have to plummet 0.71 of an inch of mercury (24 millibars) or more in 24 hours or less, most likely from Sunday morning to Monday morning, with a track from near southeastern Virginia to Atlantic Canada.

The storm will strengthen enough to create harsh winds in its wake from Sunday night through Monday and into Tuesday. The storm’s circulation will help pull in the coldest air of the winter that traveled all the way from Siberia.

The anticipated frigid conditions and safety concerns have caused organizers to move the presidential inauguration indoors on Monday, which is also Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Areas made wet and slushy by the storm will be at risk of freezing solid on Monday with little or no natural melting anticipated through the middle of the week.

More winter storms brewing in the Southern states will be monitored closely for a turn up the Atlantic coast next week as well.
