Snowy Wednesday in Maine causes tricky travel conditions, more snow on tap later this week
PORTLAND (WGME)— Snow will taper off by Wednesday afternoon with a few lingering snow showers or squalls in Maine.
An active pattern continues with more snowfall chances through the weekend.
Steady snow will give way to a few lingering snow showers or squalls Wednesday afternoon.
Highs will range from near 40 in southern Maine to 20s across central and northern Maine.
Bitter cold is back for Thursday.
Highs will only be in the teens with sunny skies and breezy winds.
Our next storm likely arrives on Friday afternoon.
There is still considerable uncertainty with this forecast, but at this point it looks like mostly snow with possibly some rain mixing in in far southern Maine.
Snow and possibly some rain will continue into Friday night, wrapping up very early on Saturday.
Cold air is then back for Saturday with highs in the teens or low 20s under sunny skies.
Sunday will start out quiet, but will turn more active for the afternoon and evening.
Another round of snowfall is looking likely into Sunday night, but overall amounts look light at this time.
Due to a milder Monday, if precipitation persists into the day it would likely change to rain. However, most precipitation will likely fall Sunday night as all snow.
As a winter storm swept through Maine on Wednesday, blanketing the state with several inches of snow, travel conditions became treacherous for commuters and residents alike. The heavy snowfall led to slick roads, reduced visibility, and numerous accidents reported on major highways. The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for much of the state, warning of hazardous travel conditions and urging residents to exercise caution while driving. Snow plows worked tirelessly to clear the roads, but the steady snowfall made it challenging to keep up with the accumulation.
Despite the challenges posed by the storm, Maine residents are no strangers to winter weather, and many were prepared with snow tires, shovels, and warm clothing. Schools and businesses remained open, but some opted to close early or allow employees to work from home to avoid the hazardous conditions.
The winter weather is far from over, as forecasters predict another round of snow later this week. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts and be prepared for more winter weather in the days to come. Stay safe and stay warm, Maine!

Most times, you don’t realize you’re having one of the best days of your life until long after it has passed.
On Jan. 22, 2025, it was apparent from the start. After a night of wondering about wintery precipitation forecasts, I stumbled to the window at 3 a.m. to see a steady snowfall blanketing my lawn. I made a sleepy smile knowing that the day ahead was going to be magical in Tallahassee.
My kids arose at sunrise not knowing if the snow had come. They climbed into our bed, and I shared the good news with them. What followed was a parade of wonder that I’ll never forget.
We explored our yard together in the first icy hour after dawn. Woodland Drives was painted white, and my eyes were just as wide as theirs. Icicles hung from camellias like the ancient formations of the Marianna Caverns. Every step was crunchy and foreign to our Floridian feet. We were all at a loss for words until the kids inevitably got hungry.
Winnie and John David Revell enjoying a snow covered Capital City Country Club.
While my family got breakfast, I decided to take my faithful labradoodle Leon for a walk about. I had to scope out the slopes at Capital City Country Club to see if sledding might be in order. As we strolled through the neighborhood, I saw familiar and happy faces out surveying the snow for themselves. My phone began to ring with notifications of friends and family doing the same on their home streets. Along with the snow, a good mood fell over Tallahassee for what seemed like the first time in a long while.
The weather hasn’t been too kind to our neck of the woods lately. Tornados and hurricanes gave us all enough of a scare last year to last a few decades. However, one arctic blast and a perfectly timed stormfront delivered a life affirming day that made so many worries fade away like snowflakes in the night.
Leon and I were delighted to find our favorite golf course covered in snow. The rolling hills that were so unpleasantly exposed by spring tornadoes now looked like a sunshine state ski resort. The word was getting out too. Kids of all ages were trotting to the course with makeshift sleds to speed down the fairways. We turned back for home to hunt for our own.
Like many in Tallahassee, we were woefully unprepared for this God-given playdate. My best available options were a trashcan top, baking pan, and the lid of a turtle shaped sandbox. Our family piled into our golf cart and slowly rolled back to the course to test the snow worthiness of our vessels. To say they floundered would be an understatement.
My kids were getting upset at my poor engineering skills until a kind neighbor came walking up our way. His name was Fred, and I was glad to make his acquaintance considering he was holding a slick yard sled that would make Clark Griswald blush. Recognizing the problem I was facing, “Mr. Fred” offered us his sled to use for the morning.
In the hours that followed, I had more fun with my family than any other time I can remember. We raced down hills, and their laughter echoed off ice covered live oaks. My wife, in awe of the moment, called it a “foundational memory” for our family.
I know she’s right, because my earliest memory as a child came during the famous Florida snowstorm of 1989. I can vividly recall the time I spent with my parents playing in the snow on the fields of Gadsden County. That day and this one, both made deep impressions.
For a brief moment, my first memory and my best new one were happening at the same time. Recognizing the scarcity of this miracle I gave it all the attention I could. I was standing in a Norman Rockwell painting. We were living the verses of a Robert Frost poem. It was Frank Sinatra singing “My Way”.
In other words, this day was perfect.

This article originally appeared on Tallahassee Democrat: Jay Revell: Tallahassee’s snowy miracle built foundational memories
Growing up in Tallahassee, Florida, snowy days were a rare occurrence. So when a blanket of white covered the city one fateful winter day, it was nothing short of a miracle. As kids, we couldn’t contain our excitement as we rushed outside to build snowmen and have epic snowball fights. The streets were eerily quiet, with the usual sounds of cars replaced by the crunching of snow under our boots.
Families came together to sled down the few hills Tallahassee had to offer, creating memories that would last a lifetime. Friends gathered around bonfires, roasting marshmallows and sharing stories as the snowflakes continued to fall.
For many of us, this snowy day was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It brought us closer to our community and reminded us of the beauty and magic of nature.
As the snow melted away and Tallahassee returned to its usual warm climate, we held onto the memories of that snowy day. It may have been fleeting, but it left a lasting impact on all of us, creating foundational memories that we will cherish forever.

Lake Effect Snow Creates Hazardous Conditions in Sault Ste. Marie
A winter weather travel advisory remains in effect for Sault Ste. Marie and St. Joseph Island this morning as lake effect snow off Lake Superior continues to impact the region. At 7:00 AM EST, light snow is falling with a temperature of -12.8°C. Winds are blowing from the south-southwest at 14 km/h, creating a wind chill of -20. Humidity is at 82%, with visibility at 24 kilometers—although heavy bursts of snow may cause sudden and localized visibility reductions. The barometric pressure is rising at 101.6 kPa, signaling a shift in the weather as the lake effect snow begins to move out.
Tuesday’s Forecast: Snow Squalls, Flurries, and Frigid Air
The lake effect snow will gradually exit to the south this morning, but not before dropping local accumulations of up to 5 cm. Flurries will persist for much of the day, with a 40% chance of snow continuing into the afternoon. Winds will shift from the southwest at 20 km/h (gusting to 40) this morning, calming briefly before switching to the north at 20 km/h early in the afternoon.
The high temperature today will be -6°C, though wind chills will make it feel like -22 this morning and -13 this afternoon. Frostbite remains a concern for exposed skin, so don’t skimp on your winter layers if you’re heading outdoors. The UV index is a low 1, but with clouds dominating, the risk of sunburn is virtually nonexistent.
Tonight: Bitterly Cold and Cloudy
The skies will remain cloudy tonight, and winds from the north at 20 km/h will taper off by evening. Temperatures will plunge to a low of -17°C, with a wind chill of -24 making it feel much colder. This is a good evening to stay inside and cozy up with a hot drink.
Midweek Weather: Flurries and Snow Return
Wednesday will bring a mix of sun and cloud by the morning, but a few flurries will linger throughout the day. Winds will pick up from the southwest at 20 km/h, gusting to 40 km/h by noon. The high temperature will rise slightly to -5°C, but the morning wind chill of -24 will make it feel much colder before moderating to -12 in the afternoon.
Wednesday night, expect snow to return as the region prepares for another round of wintry weather. Temperatures will fall to a low of -7°C, so roads may become slick overnight.
Extended Forecast: A Brief Warm-Up
Thursday offers a break from the extreme cold, with flurries continuing and a high of 0°C—possibly the warmest day of the week. Thursday night will remain cloudy with a 40% chance of flurries and a low of -3°C.
Friday brings more snow, with a high of -1°C. By Friday night, the temperatures will drop back to -8°C, with a 60% chance of flurries to wrap up the week.
What to Wear
Today’s weather calls for full winter gear. Start with thermal underlayers, add a thick sweater, and finish with a windproof, insulated parka. Waterproof boots with good traction will help in the snowy conditions, and don’t forget a toque, scarf, and gloves. With wind chills in the -20 range, exposed skin can freeze quickly, so bundle up to stay safe and warm.
Weather Trivia: Lake Superior’s Snow-Making Magic
Did you know that Sault Ste. Marie experiences some of the heaviest lake effect snow in Ontario? The massive surface area of Lake Superior generates moisture-rich snow bands that can dump up to 30 cm of snow in a single event. While today’s accumulation is minor in comparison, it’s a reminder of the lake’s powerful winter influence on the region.
Weather Overview
Winter weather advisory in Sault Ste. Marie as lake effect snow continues this morning, reducing visibility. Flurries persist through the day with wind chills near -22°C.
Attention Sault Ste. Marie residents! A snowy advisory is in effect for the area, with heavy snowfall expected throughout the day. Please exercise caution while driving and be prepared for slippery road conditions. However, there is good news on the horizon. The snow is expected to taper off later this evening, with clearing skies and colder temperatures overnight. This means that road crews will have a chance to clear the snow and improve driving conditions for tomorrow.
Remember to bundle up and stay safe during these wintry conditions. And don’t worry, clearer skies are on the way! Stay warm, Sault Ste. Marie!

Boulder will experience snow and freezing temperatures for the next few days. Whether you’re staying in town or leaving for the weekend, here are some tips to be prepared.
1. Prepare your home for cold temperatures
If you live off campus, take these steps to prevent damage and frozen pipes:
- Disconnect hoses from outside spigots. It could be your responsibility to remove hoses after each use in freezing weather to avoid pipe damage. Any damage could be your financial responsibility.
- Keep your space warm. Use thick curtains or weather insulator film to prevent heat transfer through windows and doors, and make sure furniture, rugs and clothing are not blocking air ducts and heat vents.
- Set your thermostat to at least 62 degrees. Keep the heat on, especially if you’re away for the weekend.
If pipes freeze and leak, shut off the main water supply immediately.
2. Tend to snowfall
After heavy snow, remove buildup from trees and bushes to prevent damage.
In Boulder, residents need to clear sidewalks within 24 hours of snowfall. Check your lease or ask your landlord about snow removal responsibilities. If you’re away for the weekend, arrange for someone to clear your property.
3. Take additional steps if you’re leaving town
As winter approaches, it’s important to be prepared for extreme cold and snowy weather. Here are four tips from the Division of Student Affairs to help you stay safe and comfortable during the winter months:1. Stock up on supplies: Make sure you have plenty of food, water, and other essentials on hand in case you get stuck inside during a snowstorm. It’s also a good idea to have extra blankets, flashlights, and batteries in case of a power outage.
2. Dress in layers: When venturing outside in cold weather, it’s important to dress in layers to stay warm. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add a insulating layer, and finish with a waterproof outer layer to protect against snow and wind.
3. Stay informed: Keep an eye on weather forecasts and stay informed about any potential winter storms in your area. Make sure you have a way to receive emergency alerts and updates, such as a weather radio or smartphone app.
4. Prepare your home: Take steps to winterize your home, such as insulating pipes, sealing drafts, and making sure your heating system is in good working order. Keep your driveway and walkways clear of snow and ice to prevent slips and falls.
By following these tips, you can be better prepared to handle extreme cold and snowy weather this winter. Stay safe and stay warm!

We’ve got a split forecast for the upcoming weekend in Massachusetts, with warmer temperatures and rain for Saturday before a cooldown brings in snow Sunday.
Saturday is going to showcase a chilly rain. Highs will be relatively mild for this time of year in the low to mid 40s, but that’s still a pretty miserable temperature when it’s accompanied by rain.
While the morning will be dry, rain will roll in during the afternoon. It’ll be raining the rest of the day through 8-9 p.m. Overnight lows Saturday night into Sunday morning will drop down to the low 30s.
Sunday morning will also start dry. By 3-4 p.m. the snow will begin moving into our area, and that’ll last until early Monday morning.
Most of the area will see a range of 3-5 inches, with isolated amounts up to 6 inches possible. Snow totals will be a little lighter on the Cape and islands. This will change as the weekend progresses, however, so always check in with the latest updates.
Otherwise, Sunday’s highs will reach the mid to upper 30s but the temperature will drop as the snow rolls in.
After that, get ready for a bitter cold blast!
Monday’s lows will be down to the teens with afternoon highs in the low 20s.
The coldest days will be Tuesday and Wednesday. Lows will get pretty close to zero degrees both mornings with afternoon highs only in the mid to upper teens. It’ll be dry those days and mostly to partly sunny. Thursday morning will be frigid in the single digits but at least afternoon highs will get into the low to mid 20s. Friday will be “warmer” with lows in the teens and highs back to average in the low to mid 30s.
This past weekend brought a mix of wet weather and snow to Massachusetts, with Boston and surrounding areas experiencing a dreary Saturday followed by a snowy Sunday. On Saturday, rain showers dampened the region, making for a soggy start to the weekend. Despite the wet conditions, many residents braved the weather to run errands, attend events, or simply enjoy a cozy day indoors.
As the evening approached, temperatures dropped and the rain transitioned to snow, setting the stage for a snowy Sunday. By morning, a blanket of white covered the ground, creating a winter wonderland for those who ventured outside.
While the snow brought a picturesque scene to the area, it also posed challenges for drivers and pedestrians navigating the slippery roads and sidewalks. Many residents took precautions, such as shoveling their driveways and salting walkways, to ensure safe passage in the wintry conditions.
As the weekend came to a close, the snow began to melt, leaving behind traces of the winter storm. Despite the changing weather, the resilient residents of Massachusetts embraced the unpredictable nature of New England weather and made the most of their wet Saturday and snowy Sunday.
Stay tuned to Boston News for the latest updates on weather, sports, and more in the Boston area. And remember to stay safe and warm during these winter months!

CO mountains bracing for snowy holiday weekend
SILVERTHORNE, Colo. — Multiple rounds of mountain snow mean it will likely be a crowded holiday weekend for skiers and boarders on the slopes, and for those driving up into the high country.
By Monday, a foot of snow is possible along the Interstate 70 drive. The area around Steamboat Springs and Rabbit Ears Pass is under a Winter Storm Warning and could see even more.

Shops like Blue Valley Ski and Board Rentals in Silverthorne were packed on Friday.
“Today, we sent out our biggest day of the season so far,” said owner Mo Esch. “We were sold out for a while [today].”
Esch said that only happens a couple of times a season.
This holiday weekend between Christmas and New Year’s has led people to his business from as far as the Southern U.S., and even the Southern Hemisphere.
“Lot of Alabama, a lot of Louisiana,” Esch said of Friday’s customers. “Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Jersey, New York, Argentina, Mexico, lots of places.”
Still, there are many more who will be making the drive up this weekend. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is warning them to plan ahead.
“What we are hearing is that there are going to be waves of snow this weekend, fairly moderate snow that we’re expecting,” said Lisa Schwantes, regional communications manager for CDOT.
“Travel during the daylight hours, if you can, because the cold temperatures will definitely impact and affect the roadway. So it could freeze up, get slick out there,” she advised. “So if you can avoid travel at night, I would do that.”
CDOT advises everyone to take extra time and extra emergency items with them, like food, water, a blanket, a snow shovel and a flashlight.
The department also urges everyone, especially commercial drivers, to obey chain laws. Drivers who do not are often involved in slide-offs and pile-ups that can snarl traffic and prevent plows from getting through, according to Schwantes.
The extra precautions are worth it to safely enjoy spending the holidays in the Colorado mountains.
“I hardly remember any of the Christmas presents I got, but I remember every single ski vacation my family ever took,” Esch recalled. “It was really just something I hold near and dear to my heart. So that’s one of the reasons why I just, I like to share that with other people.”
The Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) is warning backcountry travelers to be careful, as this weekend’s heavy snow and high winds will bring high avalanche danger.
