Australian Open 2025 results: Jannik Sinner thrashes Alex de Minaur after Ben Shelton beats Lorenzo Sonego
Anticipation was high among the Australian fans arriving at Rod Laver Arena that De Minaur could cause a shock – particularly given the uncertainty about Sinner’s condition.

De Minaur came into the match with a terrible record against his opponent, losing all nine of their previous meetings and winning just one set in the process.
The 25-year-old Australian was looking to end that unwanted run and become the first home player since 2005 to reach the men’s singles semi-finals.
But what was expected to be a raucous atmosphere failed to materialise on a cool Melbourne night.
It was testament to Sinner’s assured display that he largely silenced the majority of the 15,000 fans.
“Right now my worst match-up on tour is Jannik. The head to head doesn’t lie,” said De Minaur.
“In these types of conditions where it’s a little bit colder and you can’t really get the ball out of his strike zone, he can just unload and not miss. It’s tough.”

Shelton outlasts Monfils, Sonego hits new heights
Aware that his opponent had already become the oldest ATP title winner in Auckland before being forced to battle for nine-and-a-half hours just to reach the fourth round, Shelton’s game plan was clear from the outset – to make this battle as physical as possible.
“There’s a lot of things he does unbelievably well – counterpunching, making you feel uncomfortable on the court and getting to net and being able to shorten some of those points,” Shelton said.
“It was really tricky today to do some of that stuff because he was serving so well. I think he’s been doing that all week and yeah, there’s a lot of things that make that guy a nightmare to play. I can’t imagine playing him when he was 21 or 22 like me.”
Earlier, in his 26th main draw appearance, Sonego reached his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal after ending the breakout run of 19-year-old American Learner Tien 6-3 6-2 3-6 6-1.
After the 29-year-old comfortably took the opening two sets, the teenage qualifier did everything he could to make a match of it in the third set, but the tank was running on empty. Tien was ultimately unable to find enough on serve in the fourth to extend his stay.
“Just unbelievable, crazy emotion,” Sonego said. “Today was really tough. I’m so sad because he had some problem and he’s not the right way to win, but I’m so happy to reach the quarterfinal … I’m [high] in confidence right now. I have more experience than my opponent today.
“He’s a young player, next generation. Yeah, he needs to improve, and he [will] play more time in this level, for sure. Today I put my experience on court.”

If Shelton’s draw was favorable, Lorenzo Sonego’s seemed almost ordained. The world No. 55 hasn’t gone up against a single seeded player in Melbourne. He dispatched two talented qualifiers in Joao Fonseca and Leaner Tien, but neither has big-match experience the way Shelton does. This is likely to be a much sterner test for the Italian than any he has faced so far.
Like many Americans, Shelton is most comfortable on hard courts. Expect him to use his big lefty serve to his advantage on Wednesday. Sonego won their last encounter, but it came on the clay courts of the French Open. The American won their only other hard-court match in three competitive sets at the 2022 Cincinnati Masters–and that was before Shelton was anywhere close to the player that he is now.

His serve should only to look better against Sonego, whose 13.5% break percentage in 2024 was absurdly low. His inability to consistently put returns in play played a huge role in Sonego’s 22-30 record last year. His statistics last year make it hard to believe in his hot start to 2025.
I also believe Shelton has done some valuable prep work in the offseason. His return game definitely needs some more seasoning, but his backhand looks a little better, and he’s making better decisions in key moments. The latter should serve him very well in a match like this, which could feature some tight sets —and possibly even a couple of tiebreakers. Shelton will need to be smart in pressure points, and there’s no reason to believe he won’t be right now.
There just isn’t much that Sonego does better than Shelton, so it’s hard to imagine him doing too much damage against the American on his favorite surface.

Shelton has had a slightly less impressive path to the round of 16, but he still pocketed his own (slight) upset win over No. 16 seed Lorenzo Musetti in the third round. This match is perhaps the most intriguing of the fourth round. Shelton’s serve is one of the most dangerous in all of tennis right now. So while it’s true that Monfils has been in better form to this point, Shelton will have his chances to advance.
Given that the Frenchman came into Melbourne with a title that he won just last week, he has played a great deal of tennis. There will come a point when fatigue will become a factor–but not yet.

Quello tra Sinner e Rune è il primo confronto a livello Slam dopo quattro precedenti equilibrati come il bilancio complessivo: due vittorie a testa.
