  • Why Sonny Styles’ NFL Draft decision is so important to Ohio State football

COLUMBUS, Ohio — James Laurinaitis took over an Ohio State linebacker room where only one person had legitimate experience and turned it into an elite unit.

Now as he heads into Year 2 as a full-time assistant, the question is whether he can do it again. The good news is that he will have a pretty valuable piece available to him as Sonny Styles has decided that one year as a linebacker isn’t enough to feel comfortable leaving for the NFL.

Styles joins Caleb Downs as the lone returning starters on Ohio State’s defense in 2025.

Styles arrived as a five-star originally part of the 2023 class before reclassifying to 2022 to show up a year early. His career began as a safety having a small role in the 2022 Peach Bowl before claiming a starting job in 2023. But his athletic profile continued to suggest that maybe his best position was a linebacker as he quickly adjusted to the position and started alongside Cody Simon (113 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, seven sacks and seven pass breakups) this past season.

Sonny Styles, a highly touted linebacker prospect from Pickerington Central High School, has recently announced his decision to forgo his senior season and enter the NFL Draft. This decision has sent shockwaves through the Ohio State football community, as Styles was expected to be a key player for the Buckeyes next season.

Styles’ decision is not only important for his future, but also for the future of Ohio State football. With his departure, the Buckeyes will need to find a replacement for one of their most talented defensive players. This will not be an easy task, as Styles’ unique combination of size, speed, and instinct make him a rare talent.

Additionally, Styles’ decision sends a message to other recruits and current players at Ohio State. By choosing to enter the NFL Draft early, Styles is showing that he believes in his abilities and is willing to take a risk to achieve his dream of playing in the NFL. This kind of confidence and determination can be contagious, inspiring other players to work harder and strive for greatness.

Overall, Sonny Styles’ NFL Draft decision is a pivotal moment for Ohio State football. It serves as a reminder of the talent and potential that the Buckeyes possess, while also highlighting the challenges and uncertainties that come with playing at the highest level. As Ohio State looks to fill the void left by Styles’ departure, they will need to rely on their depth and talent to continue their tradition of excellence on the gridiron.

  • Cowboys 2025 NFL Draft: Sonny Styles scouting report

The Ohio State Buckeyes have won the College Football National Championship. The Buckeyes have one of the most loaded rosters in college football, with several playmakers on all levels. The offense gets much of the attention with premier receivers and running backs, but their defense has fueled their national championship. Their linebacking corps, in particular, has been outstanding. One linebacker is the feature of today’s prospect profile, Sonny Styles.

The big linebacker has football in his blood. His father, Lorenzo, played in the NFL for six seasons and won a Super Bowl with the St. Louis Rams. Sonny Styles is a second-team All-American with an enticing athletic profile the Cowboys should be interested in. Here’s the scoop on the junior linebacker.

    Strengths

The first thing that stands out about Styles is his size. Styles is listed at 6’4 ”and 235 lbs. He and Cody Simon work well together to give Ohio State a formidable tandem with great versatility. Styles has the upper body strength in the running game to hold up offensive linemen at the line of scrimmage.

As an athlete, Styles is exceptionally fluid in defending the run from sideline to sideline, and his quickness to get around offensive linemen allows him to make big plays in the running game. He routinely makes himself skinny in pursuit of the ball carrier to get around blockers.

As a tackler, Styles can also fill the gap and meet the running back in the hole. Iowa’s Kaleb Johnson is one of the premier runners in the nation. It’s one-on-one in the hole, and Styles takes him down. He also fits the proper gap to make the tackle and stop Johnson dead in his tracks.

In coverage, Styles is very alert. He understands when to pass off receivers through his zone and retrace back to his area. Styles is very light on his feet and effortlessly glides from his backpedal to playing downhill to close in on would-be receivers. In man coverage, he can easily carry running backs and tight ends up the field.

    Weaknesses

As for negatives, when Styles carries receivers and tight ends, he can be handsy for an extended time when playing near the line of scrimmage. When rushing from the interior, Styles needs to get under his pads more. He comes in to rush upright, and it gives interior linemen a clean strike zone to reroute him off his track. With his change of direction, he could be more effective as a rusher. Also with his traits, you wonder if there’s some upside with him as a speed rusher in select sub packages with his length and quick first step.

    Fit

Some draft boards have Styles listed as a safety. However, with his physicality near the line of scrimmage and ability to cover underneath patterns, a permanent move to linebacker in the NFL makes a lot of sense. He started for the Buckeyes as a Will linebacker. DeMarvion Overshown and Marist Liufau are good starting blocks and possess terrific athleticism. However, Overshown is in recovery from another ACL injury and Liufau is still developing. Styles would give Dallas immediate depth at an area of need with traits a defensive coordinator could develop.

The Dallas Cowboys are gearing up for the 2025 NFL Draft, and one player who has caught their eye is Sonny Styles. Here is a scouting report on the promising prospect:

Sonny Styles is a versatile and athletic defensive back who has the ability to make an impact all over the field. Standing at 6’2″ and weighing in at 205 pounds, Styles has the size and physicality to match up with larger receivers and tight ends.

One of Styles’ greatest strengths is his instincts and football IQ. He has a knack for reading the quarterback’s eyes and anticipating plays, allowing him to make timely interceptions and break up passes. Styles also excels in run support, using his speed and tackling ability to make stops in the open field.

In addition to his defensive skills, Styles is a dynamic returner on special teams. His speed and elusiveness make him a threat to take any kick or punt back for a touchdown.

Overall, Sonny Styles is a versatile playmaker who can contribute on defense and special teams. If the Cowboys decide to draft him in 2025, they could be adding a game-changing talent to their roster. Keep an eye out for Styles on draft day!

  • Ohio State football linebacker Sonny Styles announces return for senior season in 2025

Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles announced Friday he will remain in school for his senior year rather than leave early for the NFL.

“It’s an honor to play for Ohio State,” he wrote in a graphic posted on X. “I’m not done yet. I’m here to stay. Let’s run it back.”

With heavy attrition as a result of maintaining a senior-laden defense last season, Styles’ return is impactful for the Buckeyes. He joins safety Caleb Downs as a returning starter.

He could replace Cody Simon as the starting middle linebacker, which involves a handful of pre-snap responsibilities, or stay on the weak side.

A native of Pickerington who graduated a year early from Central in 2022 to enroll at Ohio State, Styles spent his first two seasons with the Buckeyes as a safety.

But with a 6-foot-4 frame, he moved closer to the line of scrimmage during spring last year, taking advantage of his size. In his move to linebacker, he made nearly twice as many tackles, finishing with 100 as a junior. Only Simon had more with 112.

Styles also finished with 10.5 tackles for loss and six sacks, used in blitz packages by defensive coordinator Jim Knowles.

No other defender from the front of Knowles’ 4-2-5 defense is returning to school.

Styles has family ties to Ohio State. His father, Lorenzo Styles Sr., was a linebacker for the Buckeyes during the 1990s, and his older brother, Lorenzo Styles Jr., is a cornerback who transferred to the school from Notre Dame in 2023. Lorenzo Jr. is in line to be a fifth-year senior next fall.

  • Ohio State Linebacker Sonny Styles Staying for Senior Season

Sonny Styles is staying for his senior season.

The Ohio State linebacker announced Friday that he will stay in Columbus for his senior season rather than enter the 2025 NFL draft.

Styles’ decision to stay for his final year of eligibility is a key boon to Ohio State’s 2025 defense, which is set to lose at least eight starters including all five of its other starters in its front six. He’ll be poised to play a key leadership role on Ohio State’s defense next season alongside Caleb Downs.

In his first year as a linebacker after starting his Ohio State career at safety, Styles started all 16 of the Buckeyes’ games and recorded exactly 100 tackles with 10.5 tackles for loss, six sacks, five pass breakups and one forced fumble.

Styles got progressively better over the course of his first season as a linebacker, playing some of his best football in the College Football Playoff as he recorded 24 tackles with four tackles for loss, two sacks, a forced fumble and two pass breakups – both in the form of big hits that separated the ball from the receiver. That said, Styles should be able to elevate his draft stock with another year of experience as he still has room to improve in all areas of his game, particularly in pass coverage.

Staying for his senior year also potentially gives Styles the opportunity to start alongside his older brother Lorenzo Styles Jr., who is projected to replace Jordan Hancock as Ohio State’s top nickel cornerback next season after backing Hancock up this past season.

Styles was one of three Ohio State juniors with NFL draft decisions to make along with running back Quinshon Judkins and cornerback Davison Igbinosun. Judkins announced Friday that he is entering the NFL draft while Igbinosun has not yet announced his decision.

Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles has announced that he will be returning for his senior season with the Buckeyes. Styles, who is considered one of the top linebackers in the country, had the option to declare for the NFL draft but has decided to stay in Columbus for one more year.

Styles has been a standout player for Ohio State since he arrived on campus, earning All-American honors and leading the team in tackles for the past two seasons. His decision to return for his senior year is a big boost for the Buckeyes, who will be looking to compete for a national championship in the upcoming season.

“I love this team, this university, and this city,” Styles said in a statement. “I want to finish what we started here and bring a championship back to Ohio State. I believe we have the talent and the drive to do it, and I want to be a part of that.”

With Styles returning for his senior season, Ohio State’s defense will be in good hands. His leadership and playmaking ability will be crucial for the Buckeyes as they look to make a run at a national title in 2023.

ATLANTA – When Ohio State edge rusher Jack Sawyer scooped up a fumble by Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers and raced 83 yards into Buckeye icon status at the Cotton Bowl Classic on Jan. 10, his high school coach braced for the impact in his house. The father of Georgia football head coach Kirby Smart is reportedly recovering in a New Orleans hospital after a fall outside his hotel Tuesday afternoon, according to UGASports’ Radi Nabulsi.

Sonny Smart, the elderly father off Kirby Smart, was reportedly admitted to a local hospital where he’s expected to undergo hip surgery after his fall, per Nabulsi.

Sonny Smart was in New Orleans with his wife, Sharon, to watch their son coach the Georgia Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl College Football Playoff national quarterfinal, which has been rescheduled for 4 pm ET Thursday following the tragic New Year’s Day terrorist attack on Bourbon Street.

Smart’s fall was unrelated to the early-morning terror attack, where 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. citizen from Texas, allegedly drove a pickup truck into a crowd of NYE revelers, killing at least 15 and injuring more than 30, according to local officials.

Sonny Smart is a Georgia High School coaching legend after more than two decades coaching at multiple schools in the state, including at Kirby Smart’s alma mater Bainbridge and Rayburn County High.

ESPN’s Laura Rutledge provided an update on what the Georgia team is doing around 1 p.m. ET in New Orleans. She revealed the Bulldogs are currently sheltering-in-place inside the team hotel. Police presence around the hotel has increased too, attempting to protect both teams ahead of the game.

“I spoke with the spokesperson for Georgia’s athletic department, Steven Drummond,” Rutledge said on ESPN College GameDay. “He said currently at the team hotel, Georgia has a shelter-in-place, so they are locked down at the hotel, nobody leaving that area. And they’re going to continue to do that as they gather more information.

“Right now, the College Football Playoff, as well as the Sugar Bowl officials, are meeting. They’re meeting with FBI. They are meeting with police here in New Orleans, trying to figure out exactly what’s going to be safest moving forward. And I can tell you, there is an extreme police presence here. They’ve added a lot more when it comes to police presence around New Orleans, doing everything they can to keep everybody safe.”

Griffin McVeigh contributed to this report.

In a shocking turn of events, it has been reported that Kirby Smart’s father, Sonny Smart, has been hospitalized just days before the highly anticipated Sugar Bowl matchup between Georgia and Notre Dame. This news has undoubtedly added a layer of concern and distraction for the Georgia head coach as he prepares his team for the crucial game.

Sonny Smart, a well-known and beloved figure in the Georgia football community, was reportedly admitted to the hospital for unknown reasons. Kirby Smart, who is known for his close relationship with his father, is undoubtedly feeling the weight of this situation as he balances his responsibilities as a coach with his concern for his father’s health.

As Georgia fans and players rally around their coach during this difficult time, it remains to be seen how this development will impact the team’s preparation and performance in the Sugar Bowl. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Smart family as they navigate this challenging situation.
