  • Hoops: Sooners’ huge second-half run propels them past No. 24 Vanderbilt

NORMAN — The second half started with an alley oop from Jeremiah Fears to Sam Godwin. Duke Miles followed that up with a 3-pointer.

Then Brycen Goodine made a 3-pointer.

Fears followed that with a layup.

Jalon Fears and Goodine made back-to-back 3-pointers.

Godwin made a dunk. Fears again made another layup.

By the time Glenn Taylor made a layup, it capped off a 21-0 run for the Sooners to open the second half. The Sooners made nine consecutive shots during that stretch while holding No. 24-ranked Vanderbilt scores, flipping a four-point halftime deficit into a 17-point lead.

The offensive simply found a rhythm, the defense tightened up and the Sooners rode that momentum to an 97-67 win over the Commodores Saturday at the Lloyd Noble Center.

That second-half run really was a continuation of the way the Sooners ended the first half. With Vanderbilt leading by 11 points with 3:30 before halftime, the Sooners closed the first half on a 9-2 run that was punctuated by a 3-pointer from Luke Northweather with 28 seconds to go.

Combining that with their second-half run, that stretch saw the Sooners outscore Vanderbilt 30-4. That proved to be the run the Sooners needed to find their footing in a game they had to win.

With the win, the Sooners improve to 16-5 on the season and 3-5 in SEC play.

    — Vanderbilt led by as many as 12 points in the first half and went into half with 42 points on 47% shooting from the floor and 43% shooting from the 3-point line.

But OU’s defense was significantly better in the second half. Vanderbilt scored just 27 points after halftime while shooting just 30% from the field.

After trailing 42-38 at halftime, the Sooners outscored Vanderbilt 61-27 in the second half.

    — The Sooners were remarkably efficient offensively. They shot 63% from the field (36/57) and 55% from 3 (11/20).

In the second half? The Sooners scored 61 points while shooting a blistering 73% from the field and 58% from the 3-point line.

    — It was turnovers that killed Oklahoma in the first half. The Sooners coughed the ball up 11 times, which led to 10 Vanderbilt points.

The Sooners completely flipped that script in the second half. They committed just six turnovers after halftime while scoring 15 points off of 10 second-half turnovers for Vanderbilt.

    — The Sooners won the rebounding battle 39-24, a huge bounce back after they were outrebounded by 28 against Texas A&M.

    — All eyes were going to be on Jeremiah Fears after his dud against Texas A&M, when he was held scoreless while missing all five of his shot attempts.

This was the bounce-back effort the Sooners needed, and it started early. Fears scored seven of the team’s first eight points, and that carried through the rest of the game. He finished with a team-high 21 points while shooting an efficient 8-of-12 from the floor, adding six rebounds, four assists and three steals. He finished with a plus-minus of +22.

When Fears plays like this, the Sooners are a lot tougher to beat.

    — Dayton Forsythe continues to be a genuine difference-maker off the bench. In one particular sequence at the end of the first half, Forsythe forced a jump ball defensively, drove and made a layup, then stripped a Vanderbilt player that resulted in a turnover. It was a big reason why Oklahoma ended the half on a 9-2 run.

Forsythe — who finished with 14 points, three rebounds and three steals — wasn’t even in the rotation to begin conference play. But he’s now logged at least 22 minutes in the last two games and has become an indispensable cog in the Sooners’ machine.

He was a big reason why the Sooners held an 32-10 advantage in bench scoring against Vanderbilt.

    — Vanderbilt guard Jason Edwards was on a heater to start the game, making four of his first five shots. But the Sooners held him in check, as he made just three of final 15 shots. He finished the game with 21 points on 7-of-20 shooting.

    — This was a significantly important victory for the Sooners, who face No. 1 Auburn (8 p.m. Tuesday, SEC Network) and No. 8 Tennessee next week.

  • Sooners defensive coordinator target Jim Knowles accepts job at Penn State

Jim Knowles, the reigning national champion defensive coordinator for the Ohio State Buckeyes and a target for the Sooners’ open DC position under Brent Venables, has reportedly accepted a job at Penn State.

Griffin Media’s Toby Rowland reports that Knowles, the former Oklahoma State defensive coordinator from 2018-2021, is staying in the Big Ten and going to Happy Valley with James Franklin.

“Reliable sources confirm that barring last second change of heart, Jim Knowles is headed to Penn State. He has notified James Franklin that he’ll accept their offer of well over $3 million to be highest paid coordinator in college football history. Knowles is from Philly.”

Knowles was a top candidate to replace Zac Alley as OU’s defensive coordinator in 2025. Oklahoma hired Washington State’s Ben Arbuckle as offensive coordinator in December to replace Seth Littrell.

He brought with him the top quarterback in the Transfer Portal, John Mateer, with him to Norman to take over for Jackson Arnold, who is now on the Auburn Tigers.

Oklahoma opens the season on Saturday, Aug. 30, against Illinois State. The Sooners don’t travel on the road in conference until Oct. 18th against South Carolina.

The Oklahoma Sooners may have to look elsewhere for a new defensive coordinator, as top target Jim Knowles has reportedly accepted a job at Penn State.

Knowles, who has been the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State for the past three seasons, was widely considered the frontrunner for the Sooners’ vacant defensive coordinator position. However, it appears that Penn State was able to swoop in and secure his services.

This is a major blow for the Sooners, as Knowles is widely regarded as one of the top defensive minds in college football. His aggressive and innovative schemes have helped Oklahoma State become one of the top defensive units in the country.

It will be interesting to see who the Sooners turn to now in their search for a new defensive coordinator. They will have big shoes to fill after missing out on the opportunity to bring Knowles on board.

  • Hoops: Sooners beat South Carolina, secure first SEC win

Hoops: Sooners beat South Carolina, secure first SEC win

NORMAN — Oklahoma was locked into yet another slugfest on Saturday against South Carolina.

Despite a poor offensive first half, where the Sooners scored just 34 points and committed 11 turnovers, Porter Moser’s squad clung to a 59-54 lead with 7:23 left in the game. But considering the stakes, and the Sooners at risk of falling to 0-5 in conference play, they needed a spark.

    They got it.

Jalon Moore was fouled on back-to-back trips, making 3-of-4 free throw attempts. Jeremiah Fears then found Mohamed Wague for an alley-oop dunk, and Moore followed that up with a layup.

With 4:05 to go, Fears found Kobe Elvis for the dagger 3-pointer that punctuated a 15-0 run, putting the Sooners up 18 points.

It was a scoring flurry the Sooners desperately needed, as they rode that momentum to a 82-62 win at the Lloyd Noble Center.

It wasn’t the prettiest win, but it was a game the Sooners had to win to avoid falling to the bottom of the SEC standings. They improved to 14-4 on the season and 1-4 in SEC play.

“The understatement of the year is how bad we needed that,” Moser said. “To get that narrative of getting the first one out of the way and getting our confidence back up to play winning basketball. You’re going to have tons of opportunities in this league.

“We needed to log that first (win) so we could move forward.”

    NOTES

    — Moore continues to be super aggressive offensively, and the Sooners needed that against the Gamecocks. He finished with a game-high 22 points on an efficient 6-of-10 shooting performance, adding eight rebounds. He’s also been good at getting to the free throw line, making 10-of-11 attempts.

This comes just a few days after Moore scored a career-high 29 points against Texas, with 26 of those points coming in the second half.

    — Turnovers threatened to again doom the Sooners. They committed 11 in the first half. But they cleaned that up in the second half, committing just one.

The thing that helped? South Carolina were just as bad at taking care of the ball, committing 12 of its 17 turnovers in the first half. The Sooners also won the points-off-turnover battle 19-3.

“I think that’s the narrative of this team,” Moser said. “It was better winning basketball. It’s been a theme for us these last two days. We had an old school company mission statement: We need to play better winning basketball to win games. I thought we had 11 (turnovers) in the first half, and we talked about: How many were unforced? Just dribbling too deep.

“We really took care of it in the second half. Just way more urgency.”

    — After being out of the rotation the first three SEC games, Dayton Forsythe got some minutes in both halves. The true freshman came into the game at the 13:20 mark of the first half and drilled a jumper 14 seconds later.

He made one of the biggest plays of the game midway through the second half, hitting a deep trailing 3-pointer with 8:14 on the clock that pushed Oklahoma’s lead to eight.

This comes after Forsythe gave the Sooners a spark in the second half of Wednesday’s loss against Texas.

Forsythe finished the game with five points, two rebounds and an assist, and again provided effort plays on both ends. He’s likely earned a spot in the rotation moving forward.

“After last game, we talked about it, and we all felt like, why do anything different than we did the last 15 minutes of the Texas game?” Forsythe said. “I feel like today we did that. We played like the last 15 minutes and we gave everything we had, and the result was the result.”

    — This marked the second game with the Sooners’ new starting lineup, with Brycen Goodine in place of Kobe Elvis.

The results were mixed against Texas, but it paid off against the Gamecocks. Goodine made two 3-pointers, while Elvis scored 12 points with four 3-pointers off the bench.

    — Jeremiah Fears was great as the Sooners’ primary playmaker and nearly finished with a triple double, finishing with 16 points, nine rebounds and a career-high eight assists.

Fears’ jumper has remained inconsistent, finishing 5-of-12 from the field and 0-of-4 from the 3-point line, and that’s held him back from being OU’s primary scoring engine. But the playmaking and all-around play has been there.

    — The Sooners made 18-of-11 free throw attempts, while the Gamecocks made just 11-of-21.

The Gamecocks’ struggles were a big reason why the Sooners won the game.

Up next: The Sooners have a bye week before traveling to Arkansas on Saturday.

  • Women’s hoops: No. 9 Sooners fall to No. 5 Texas

Women’s hoops: No. 9 Sooners fall to No. 5 Texas

    NORMAN — 27 turnovers.

That’s how many times the No. 9-ranked Sooners had in their 80-73 loss to No. 5 Texas to open conference play Thursday at the Lloyd Noble Center. The Sooners fell to 12-2 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.

The Sooners couldn’t have asked for a better start. They shot 10-of-20 from the floor and committed just three turnovers, as they led 26-17 heading into the second quarter. They closed the first quarter on a 14-6 run.

However, the offensive issues piled up in the second quarter. The Sooners shot just 5-of-16 from the floor (31%) and coughed the ball up eight times in the frame, as they entered halftime with a one-point deficit. The turnover issues didn’t improve after the break — the Sooners committed eight in the third quarter and seven in the fourth quarter.

The early start was promising, but the Sooners simply struggled to sustain that early momentum.

“We struggled to get into a flow, but it’s hard to do that when you pass it to the other team,” OU coach Jennie Baranczyk said. “… I thought our ball movement was really good in the first quarter. Then I thought we had some moments in the third quarter. But we went away from completing our cuts. We went away from just our receivers being relentless.”

While Texas had their own turnover issues with 18, the Sooners’ proved particularly costly. The Longhorns won the points-off-turnover battle 28-15.

The offense wasn’t good enough to overcome those issues. The Sooners shot 46% from the floor (26 of 57) but only made 2-of-16 attempts from the 3-point line.

Here’s a few other notes from the game:

    — It was truly an ugly game from start to finish. The two teams combined for 44 fouls, 46 free throw attempts and 45 turnovers.

The Sooners’ 27 turnovers tied their season high.

The ugliness came to a head late in the third quarter. Texas forward Kyla Oldacre shoved OU forward Beatrice Culliton to the ground during a battle for a rebound, and that resulted in a scuffle between the two teams. Officials reviewed the play for several minutes before assessing Oldacre with a technical and two Sooner players with personal fouls.

However, the Sooners were not rewarded two technical free throws.

“I don’t know if I’ve had a (review) that long,” Baranczyk said. “… The explanation was basically that they had an intentional foul and we reacted to it, so they negated each other.”

    — One of the casualties of the foul brigade was Reagan Beers. The Sooner forward picked up two quick fouls in the first quarters and sat the entire second quarter. She picked up her fourth foul late in the third quarter.

Beers — who leads the Sooners in scoring this season — finished with 11 points and six rebounds in just 16 minutes.

    — One bright spot for the Sooners was Liz Scott off the bench. She provided an immediate spark with seven points in the first quarter and finished with 14 for the game.

“I thought Liz brought incredible energy,” Baranczyk said. “… I thought Liz did some really good things.”

Peyton Verhulst led the Sooners in scoring with 23 points but she shot just 7-of-23 from the field, including 1-of-11 from the 3-point line.

    — The Sooners killed the Longhorns on the glass, winning the rebounding battle 44-28. They even had 21 offensive rebounds, which led to 23 second-chance points. However, the turnover issues proved too much to overcome.

    — It was a tough way for the Sooners to open SEC play, but Baranczyk is confident this is a learning experience for her team.

“I don’t think we’re as confident as we need to be right now. This is one of those games that you kind of hope we get a little edge back and make sure we know that we can do that. I haven’t seen a team of ours pass up as many shots, either. Then we turn it over after. So those are the things that’ll be really interesting as we process this, because this team is good. We have a really good basketball team. So I’m excited to see how we respond.”

    — Up next: The Sooners travel to No. 15 Tennessee for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday.
