  • Sources – Bucks trade Khris Middleton to Wizards for Kyle Kuzma

The Bucks have traded Khris Middleton to the Wizards, ending his tenure as one of their franchise cornerstones in a multiplayer deal that sends Kyle Kuzma to Milwaukee, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The Bucks also sent rookie guard AJ Johnson, their first-round draft selection last year, and a pick swap to Washington, which dealt forward Patrick Baldwin Jr. and second-round draft compensation to Milwaukee, sources told Charania.

As part of the deal, the New York Knicks are sending center Jericho Sims to the Bucks in exchange for Delon Wright and cash, according to sources.

Middleton, 33, spent the past 11-plus seasons in Milwaukee and was one of the foundational players on the Bucks’ championship team in 2021.

But he has been hampered by injuries in recent years and continues to recover from offseason surgery on both ankles, which sidelined him for the first 21 games of this season and has limited his production — his 12.6 points per game is his lowest scoring average since 2013-14.

Middleton is owed $31.7 million this season and has a player option for next year worth $34 million. Kuzma is making $23.5 million this season, but his salary drops to $21.4 million next season, followed by $19.4 million in the final year of his deal.

To help Milwaukee build out its roster, Kuzma is reducing a portion of the trade bonus in his contract, sources told ESPN’s Bobby Marks. The savings drops Milwaukee below the second apron, which will give the Bucks more flexibility to improve their roster.

The Bucks can now aggregate salaries to make a trade, which they were previously restricted in doing under the collective bargaining agreement. But to achieve that flexibility, the Bucks traded their longest-tenured player, a longtime running mate to franchise superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Middleton rose from G League player to NBA All-Star on the strength of his ability to play well off Antetokounmpo. The three-time All-Star averaged over 20 points four times in a five-year stretch that began with the 2017-18 season and ran through the 2021-22 campaign. He co-starred with Antetokounmpo and Jrue Holiday to lead Milwaukee to its first NBA title in 50 years with a six-game Finals victory over the Phoenix Suns to cap the 2020-21 post-bubble season.

But after the championship run, knee injuries slowed Middleton, as he hyperextended his knee during the 2021-22 regular season before suffering an MCL sprain in his left knee during the playoffs. He missed the start of the following season while recovering from offseason wrist surgery, then missed an additional 18 straight games during the year with knee soreness.

The ankle surgeries in the offseason delayed Middleton’s season debut until December, and he has appeared in 23 games since, starting in seven.

Middleton owns the Bucks franchise record for career 3-pointers with 1,382. He had 12,586 points with Milwaukee to rank as the franchise’s third-leading scorer, behind Antetokounmpo and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

He ranks second in team history in games played (735) and minutes played (23,039) — behind Antetokounmpo — and third in assists (2,990).

Kuzma, 29, is averaging 15.2 points and 5.8 rebounds on 42% shooting this season, the lowest percentage of his career. He injects some youth to a Bucks roster that features three core players — Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard and Brook Lopez — in their 30s.

Kuzma, who is 6-foot-9, also can play in the frontcourt next to Antetokounmpo in Milwaukee’s small-ball lineups. However, he has struggled throughout his career shooting from the outside; he is a career 33% 3-point shooter, including a career-low 28% this season.

Kuzma signed a four-year, $102 million deal with Washington in July 2023, a contract that came after he averaged 21.2 points and 7.2 rebounds in 64 games. He has had a strong defensive season, according to ESPN Research, which tracked opponents shooting 42.7% against him this season. That falls within the top 25 players with at least 250 field goal attempts.

Johnson, 20, has not played much for the Bucks as a rookie and has spent most of the season in the G League.

Baldwin, 22 and raised in Wisconsin, has also been used sparingly, appearing in 22 games for the Wizards this season.

Sources have confirmed that the Milwaukee Bucks have traded Khris Middleton to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Kyle Kuzma. This trade comes as a surprise to many fans, as Middleton has been a key player for the Bucks in recent years.

Middleton, a two-time NBA All-Star, has been a consistent scorer and playmaker for the Bucks, helping lead them to a championship in 2021. However, with the emergence of young players like Jrue Holiday and Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Bucks may have felt that Middleton was expendable.

On the other hand, Kuzma, a versatile forward, brings a different skill set to the Bucks. Known for his scoring ability and defensive prowess, Kuzma could provide a boost to the Bucks’ frontcourt.

It will be interesting to see how this trade plays out for both teams, as Middleton and Kuzma will have the opportunity to make an impact in their new respective teams. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Sources – Suns’ Kevin Durant has no interest in Warriors reunion

Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant has no desire for a reunion with the Golden State Warriors, league sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The Warriors have been seriously pursuing a trade before Thursday’s deadline with Durant as one of their targets. Golden State is eager to find another star to play alongside franchise star Stephen Curry.

Due to Phoenix’s 25-24 record and ninth-place standing in the West entering Wednesday, teams have been aggressively calling the Suns and have inquired about Durant.

However, sources told Charania that Durant does not want to go back to Golden State, after he helped the Warriors win back-to-back titles in two of his three seasons there.

Durant won Finals MVP in both the 2017 and 2018 NBA Finals.

The Suns hope to continue to build around Durant and Devin Booker, but it is unclear where trade talks go between now and the deadline.

According to sources close to the situation, Suns’ star Kevin Durant has no interest in reuniting with the Golden State Warriors. Despite speculation that Durant could potentially return to the team where he won two NBA championships, it appears that he is focused on leading the Suns to success.

Durant, who signed with the Suns in the offseason, has been a key player for the team and has quickly become a fan favorite in Phoenix. While the Warriors have expressed interest in bringing Durant back, sources say that he is committed to his current team and is not interested in returning to Golden State.

Fans of the Suns can rest assured that Durant is fully focused on helping his team compete for a championship and is not looking to make a return to his former team. Stay tuned for more updates on Durant and the Suns as the season progresses.

  • Nico Gonzalez: Man City pushing for cut-price Porto deal – sources

Manchester City are working to thrash out a compromise with FC Porto to get a deal for midfielder Nico Gonzalez over the line before the transfer deadline, sources have told ESPN.

City have so far indicated they are reluctant to meet the release clause in Gonzalez’s contract — believed to be around €60 million ($62m). They value the 23-year-old at closer to €40m.

Porto do not want to accept a reduced fee because part of the payment will be owed to Gonzalez’s former club, Barcelona. The Spaniard moved to Portugal from La Liga in 2023 and a source has told ESPN that the payment owed to Barcelona if Gonzalez moves could be as high as 40% of the total transfer fee.

Sources have told ESPN that talks between the clubs are continuing on Monday. City have until 11 p.m. in the UK to get a deal over the line before the window closes.

City are also keeping an open mind about the possibility of signing Douglas Luiz from Juventus. A source has told ESPN that the Serie A side would have to accept an initial loan offer for the Brazilian with an option to make it permanent in the summer built into the deal.

Juventus have told Luiz’s potential suitors that they would prefer a permanent transfer or an obligation to make it permanent in the summer for a set fee.

Meanwhile, a source has told ESPN that City have knocked back an approach from Chelsea for 19-year-old midfielder Nico O’Reilly. City are open to letting O’Reilly leave, but want to include a buy-back option in any potential deal.

Nico Gonzalez: Man City pushing for cut-price Porto deal – sources

According to sources close to the negotiations, Manchester City are eager to secure a cut-price deal for Porto’s talented midfielder Nico Gonzalez. The 20-year-old Argentine has caught the eye of City’s scouting team with his impressive performances in the Portuguese league.

City are reportedly looking to take advantage of Porto’s financial difficulties and are hoping to strike a deal for Gonzalez at a lower price than his market value. The club sees him as a potential long-term replacement for Fernandinho in the midfield.

However, Porto are said to be holding out for a higher fee for Gonzalez, who has a release clause of €20 million. It remains to be seen whether City will be able to negotiate a deal that satisfies both parties.

  • Sources – Canelo Alvarez, Terence Crawford finalizing Sept. 13 title bout

Canelo Alvarez, boxing’s top star, and Terence Crawford are in the process of finalizing a deal for a Sept. 13 super middleweight championship fight in Las Vegas, sources told ESPN.

Crawford, who moved up to 154 pounds from 147 in August in a title-winning effort vs. Israil Madrimov, will jump two more weight classes to the 168-pound limit for the bout. There won’t be any catchweight or rehydration clause attached to the fight, sources said.

Turki Alalshikh, the chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority, is organizing the fight. He also organized Crawford’s most recent bout. There are no signed contracts yet, sources said.

Before Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) moves onto a planned Mexican Independence Day showdown with Crawford, Canelo will defend his three 168-pound titles on Cinco De Mayo weekend. Alvarez could fight William Scull, who grabbed the title stripped from Canelo last year, on May 3 in Las Vegas, sources said. A victory over Scull would once again crown Alvarez undisputed champion.

Mexico’s Alvarez, 34, still holds the WBA, WBC and WBO titles at 168 pounds. The future Hall of Famer is ESPN’s No. 5 pound-for-pound boxer. In 2024, Alvarez scored decision wins over Jaime Munguia and Edgar Berlanga. Canelo has knocked down each of his past four opponents in decision wins.

Alvarez has won five fights since a decision defeat to Dmitry Bivol in May 2022 at 175 pounds. His only previous loss was against Floyd Mayweather in 2013 at 152 pounds.

Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) is ESPN’s No. 2 pound-for-pound boxer. Also a future Hall of Famer, the Omaha, Nebraska, native hasn’t fought more than once in a year since 2019.

His career best came in July 2023 when he scored a ninth-round TKO of Errol Spence Jr. to win the undisputed welterweight championship. Crawford, 37, won’t fight before he meets Canelo, sources said, as he builds his body up to 168 pounds from 154.

Crawford, ESPN’s No. 1 boxer at 154 pounds, is a four-division champion. Alvarez is also a four-division champion.

Sources have confirmed that boxing superstars Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford are finalizing a highly anticipated title bout scheduled for September 13th. This exciting matchup between two of the sport’s biggest names is sure to be a must-watch event for boxing fans worldwide. • Mets agree with infielder Nick Madrigal on 1-year deal: Sources

Looking to add to their infield depth, the New York Mets agreed to a one-year deal with veteran Nick Madrigal on Friday, league sources confirmed. The New York Post first reported the agreement. It’s a split contract, league sources said, meaning Madrigal would earn different salaries in the majors and minors.

Madrigal, who turns 28 in March and holds minor-league options, is set to compete in spring training for an infield role along with younger players Brett Baty, Luisangel Acuña and Ronny Mauricio, among others. The Athletic previously reported that the Mets were in the market for infield depth.

Similar to Jose Iglesias, a free agent who excelled in a utility role last season with the Mets, Madrigal offers some versatility. In the majors, he has played second base and third base (no word on Madrigal’s singing ability).

Madrigal puts the ball in play and hardly ever strikes out (just 9 percent of the time over his career). He doesn’t hit balls especially hard or find barrels, however. With the Chicago White Sox and over his first two seasons, Madrigal, the fourth pick in the 2018 draft, slashed .317/.358/.406. But he hasn’t matched that production since. Over his past three seasons, all spent with the Chicago Cubs, Madrigal has slashed just .251/.304/.312.

The New York Mets have reportedly reached an agreement with infielder Nick Madrigal on a 1-year deal, according to sources close to the team. Madrigal, known for his exceptional defensive skills and high contact rate at the plate, is expected to provide a valuable addition to the Mets’ roster for the upcoming season.

Stay tuned for more updates as details of the deal are released. Mets fans, are you excited to see Madrigal in a Mets uniform? Let us know in the comments below! #Mets #NickMadrigal #MLB #HotStove

  • Stephen Curry, Steve Kerr have concerns about Jimmy Butler joining the Warriors: Sources

Will the Golden State Warriors trade for Jimmy Butler? The answer will come down to the wishes of Stephen Curry.

I reported on Tuesday morning that the Warriors were back in the mix for Butler now that the Heat have dropped their asking price. Then on Wednesday, The Athletic’s Anthony Slater and Marcus Thompson added intriguing details, noting the Warriors’ initial reluctance due to concerns across every level of the organization about price tag and potential “combustion.”

My league sources confirm these hesitations, revealing Curry himself has reservations about Butler’s fit in the Warriors’ locker room — a sentiment shared by head coach Steve Kerr. Their worries stem from Butler’s tumultuous history with previous teams:

In Chicago, Butler clashed with multiple teammates, including Joakim Noah and Rajon Rondo, and publicly slammed his head coach Fred Hoiberg.

In Minnesota, there was the infamous practice incident where he yelled at teammates, coaches and executives before conducting an interview with Rachel Nichols.

In Philadelphia, he refused to shoot 3-pointers because of his issues with Brett Brown’s offensive system.

And now in Miami, he’s feuding with Pat Riley, missing flights and disrespecting his teammates.

It’s no wonder Curry would be unsure about wanting Butler in the same locker room as Draymond Green, who has his own unique brand of team chemistry roulette. Are we really ready for the Draymond-Jimmy Buddy Cop movie? Curry’s probably having nightmares of Butler yelling, “You f***ing need me!” while Green’s busy recording his next podcast rant.

I would not trade for Butler if I were the Warriors. As much as he’d help the team as a versatile defender and a downhill attacker, adding Butler’s I’m-the-captain-now energy to a ship that’s barely staying afloat is a bad idea compared to other routes for the Warriors. Blowing it up would be a more sensible long-term approach, as I wrote in-depth about last week. So would staying patient and waiting until the offseason to find out what other opportunities are available. Who knows? If the Suns implode, maybe Kevin Durant would want to move to the Bay Area.

It’d be one thing if Butler were easily acquirable, but he makes $48 million this season. The Warriors would need to give up Andrew Wiggins and some combination of important players to make any deal work financially, such as Gary Payton II, Kyle Anderson and Jonathan Kuminga. As Green himself said on his podcast, trading for a player making that much money is a challenge.

The Heat have lowered their asking price for Butler because they’re tired of his act, and they’d like to get something in return instead of letting him walk in free agency for nothing. There’s a fear in Miami that the Nets could absorb salaries this offseason to free cap space for a team, such as the Rockets, to outright sign Butler.

But if the Warriors bypass the opportunity to trade for Butler, and if the Suns can’t find a team willing to take on Bradley Beal, then what happens for the Heat? Maybe the Bucks re-enter the sweepstakes. Or maybe the Rockets decide to make a splash now instead of waiting for free agency. But executives around the NBA keep pointing to Memphis.

It’s been widely reported the Grizzlies were informed that Butler doesn’t want to play there. But they still keep popping up as the team that could end up with Butler in return for what Miami desires: short-term salaries and headache relief.

According to sources close to the Golden State Warriors, both Stephen Curry and head coach Steve Kerr have expressed concerns about the potential addition of Jimmy Butler to the team.

While Butler is undoubtedly a talented player, there are worries about how his strong personality and demanding playing style could potentially disrupt the team chemistry that the Warriors have worked hard to build over the years.

Curry and Kerr are known for their emphasis on teamwork and selfless play, and there are concerns that Butler’s more individualistic approach could clash with the team’s culture.

Additionally, there are questions about how Butler would fit into the Warriors’ already star-studded lineup, and whether his presence would disrupt the balance of the team.

While nothing has been confirmed yet, it seems that Curry and Kerr are approaching the possibility of Butler joining the Warriors with caution. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Tyler Sabapathy: Eagles fan, 18, dies after falling from pole, sources say

A night of joyous celebrations took a terrifying turn that claimed the life of a young Eagles fan, according to sources.

    What we know:

Philadelphia police confirmed to FOX 29’s Kelly Rule that an 18-year-old man landed on his head after falling from a pole near 15th and Market streets on Sunday night.

He was taken to a local hospital, where he was put in very critical condition, according to authorities, who say he fell on his own.

On Tuesday night, sources told FOX 29 that the 18-year-old, a student at Temple University, had died.

    What they’re saying:

On Tuesday, Temple University released the following announcement to students and colleagues titled “Tragic News to Share:”

“It is with deep sadness that we write to share news of the death of first-year student Tyler Sabapathy. Over the weekend, Tyler sustained critical injuries and ultimately passed away this afternoon.

The loss of a promising 18-year-old man like Tyler is both tragic and traumatic. There are no words that can make sense of it, and the entire Temple community mourns his passing. Our hearts go out to Tyler’s family, friends, classmates and all who knew and loved him.

A native of Toronto, Canada, Tyler was already a thriving student within Temple University’s College of Public Health, where he was majoring in exercise and sport science. As an accomplished gymnast with more than 120 medals in provincial, regional and international competitions, Tyler was fascinated with injury prevention, and this ultimately led him to pursue the major that he did. He no doubt had a bright future ahead of him, and it is so tragic that we will not be able to see how he would have made his mark on the world.

As a member of the university’s club gymnastics team, Tyler displayed exceptional self-discipline and work ethic, spending countless hours a week training and honing his craft. He was loved by his teammates, friends and coaches here in Philadelphia.

Temple University is committed to supporting our community during this time of unspeakable loss. We encourage students to seek available support services at Tuttleman Counseling Services, located at 1700 N. Broad St., which offers a range of resources. For more information on services and hours of operation, call 215-204-7276 or visit the Tuttleman Counseling Services website.

For faculty and staff members, our employee assistance program offers support and resources 24/7 online or by calling 1-888-267-8126. Employees and students can also contact Temple’s Psychological Services Center at psc@temple.edu, or 215-204-7100.

Once again, we extend our thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies to those closest to Tyler, especially his parents and siblings. He will be deeply missed.”

    Dig deeper:

Temple University freshman students and teammates of 18-year-old Tyler Sabapathy are devastated, remembering him as a beloved student and talented athlete.

Junior Robert Stewart says he’s cherishing the moments he had with him, as he supervises the Men’s Gymnastics Team practices.

“To hear that of all sports, but of all people of that to happen to, is Tyler, is actually pretty upsetting. It’s shocking. It’s hard to honestly comprehend,” says Stewart. “He was a beautiful student, he was amazing, he was nice, he was sweet, he was kind.’

Students tell FOX 29 they are feeling differently about the celebrations now, but want some of the negative feedback on social media to stop.

“It’s the culture of the city so please don’t make a mockery of it. It was an accident,” says Stewart.

Ray Epstein, Temple’s student body president, says the tragedy should be used as a message of caution.

“We can celebrate easily and happily without necessarily continuing this tradition,” she says. “As much as it’s been something that’s been positive for people, this is a sign that it needs to come to an end, and it’s nobody’s fault because people were participating in a long-held culture, but we need to disrupt it.”

A spokesperson for Temple University said they sent out the following message to students before the NFC Championship game, and will be sending out similar messaging before the Super Bowl.

    Dear Temple University Students,

This Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles face the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship Game for the chance to compete in Super Bowl LIX. The excitement is palpable across the city, surrounding counties, and beyond!

While such moments unite fans in celebration, history has shown that post-game festivities can sometimes lead to destructive or unsafe behavior. At Temple University, your safety and the well-being of our community remain our top priorities. We ask that all students keep the following in mind:

    • Stay Responsible: Acts of vandalism, refusal to disperse, or destruction of property could result in both criminal charges and university disciplinary action. Sanctions may include fines or even immediate suspension. Please note that surveillance will be increased both on campus and in the city during the game.
    • Respect Our Community: Temple takes pride in fostering strong relationships with our neighbors. Celebrations that damage property or disrupt our community will not be tolerated.
    • Celebrate Safely: If the Eagles win, the city and state will coordinate official celebrations on a designated day, ensuring plenty of opportunities to revel responsibly.
    • Lead by Example: As members of the Temple community, you are leaders. Let’s show what it means to celebrate with spirit and respect.

We encourage everyone to play a role in keeping this moment memorable for all the right reasons. If you have any concerns, please reach out to the Office of the Dean of Students or Campus Safety Services.

Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to the Temple community. Let’s make this a historic and joyous time—Go Birds!

    The backstory:

Sabapathy was one of many to climb poles across the city as hundreds of Eagles fans gathered to celebrate the team’s championship win against the Commanders.

The poles are typically greased by the city prior to big sports games in an effort to deter climbing, but many fans over the years have made it to the top regardless.

The Source: Information from this article was provided by the Philadelphia Police Department, Temple University officials, students and friends.

    PhiladelphiaNewsPhiladelphia Eagles

  • Natasha Howard bringing title experience to Fever, sources say

Three-time WNBA champion Natasha Howard will sign with the Indiana Fever as a free agent, sources told ESPN on Friday.

The two-time All-Star and 2019 defensive player of the year will bring veteran experience and a defensive presence to a Fever team led by the younger core of No. 1 overall picks Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston and star guard Kelsey Mitchell.

Howard, a 6-foot-2 forward, returns to the franchise that drafted her fifth overall in 2014 out of Florida State. She spent two seasons with the organization, where she was coached by the recently returning Stephanie White, before moving on to play for the Minnesota Lynx, Seattle Storm, New York Liberty and Dallas Wings. Howard was part of the Lynx’s 2017 championship squad and won a pair of titles in Seattle with Sue Bird and Breanna Stewart in 2018 and 2020.

With the Storm, Howard was named WNBA Most Improved Player in 2018 and had her career season in 2019, when Stewart was out with injury, earning an all-WNBA first-team nod, her first of two All-Star bids and her second all-defensive first team appearance.

Howard, also known for her ability to rim-run, averaged 17.6 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game in 2024 for the Wings.

Now with Howard to elevate the frontcourt, the surging Fever are looking to improve on last season’s 20-20 campaign and first-round playoff exit. This offseason, they brought back White for her second stint at the helm and re-signed Mitchell in free agency.

Free agent contracts can be signed beginning Saturday.

Natasha Howard, a two-time WNBA champion with the Seattle Storm, is reportedly bringing her championship experience to the Indiana Fever. According to sources, Howard’s leadership and winning mentality will be invaluable for a Fever team looking to make a playoff push.

The 6-foot-2 forward has proven herself as a versatile player on both ends of the court, with the ability to score, rebound, and defend at a high level. Her presence on the court will not only elevate the Fever’s performance but also provide mentorship to younger players on the roster.

Howard’s experience in big moments and her championship pedigree will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the Fever’s quest for success. With her on board, the Fever are poised to make a statement in the upcoming WNBA season.

Fans are eagerly anticipating Howard’s debut with the Fever and are excited to see how her leadership will shape the team’s future. Stay tuned for more updates on Natasha Howard’s impact on the Indiana Fever.

  • Sources — Blue Jays reach deal with free agent Max Scherzer

Free-agent right-hander Max Scherzer and the Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to a one-year, $15.5 million contract, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Thursday.

The future Hall of Famer, who turned 40 last July, is coming off an injury-plagued season with the Texas Rangers in which he made just nine starts and went 2-4 with a 3.95 ERA. He didn’t make his first start until June 23 following surgery in the offseason to repair a herniated disk in his back. He then missed all of August with shoulder fatigue, returning to make one start in September before a hamstring injury ended his season.

Once a durable workhorse who made 30-plus starts each season from 2009 through 2018, Scherzer has now missed significant time each of the past three seasons, making 23 starts in 2022 while missing time with an oblique strain and making 27 starts in 2023 due to a strained shoulder and back spasms.

When he did pitch, the stuff was diminished, even from the previous season. His fastball averaged 92.5 mph, the lowest of his career and down from 93.7 mph in 2023. His strikeout rate dropped to 22.6%, down from 28.0%, and well below his 2021-22 season, when he was over 30%. He allowed a .724 OPS, higher than the MLB average of .711.

Scherzer was a free agent for the third time in his career. Ahead of the 2015 season, he signed a seven-year, $210 million contract with the Washington Nationals that proved to be one of the best signings ever for a free-agent pitcher. Scherzer won the second and third Cy Young Awards of his career, finished in the top three in three other seasons and helped the Nationals win the World Series in 2019, going 3-0 with a 2.40 ERA that postseason, and started Game 7 of the World Series while pitching through a neck injury.

He was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2021 in the final year of that contract and then signed a three-year deal, $130 million deal with the New York Mets, the highest annual average value for a player at the time (matched a year later by Justin Verlander and then surpassed by Shohei Ohtani in 2024). The Mets made the playoffs that first year as Scherzer posted a 2.23 ERA, but he was traded to the Rangers in 2023 — and helped them to a World Series title, although injuries limited him to just 9.2 innings in three postseason starts (he did pitch three scoreless innings in his one World Series start).

The eight-time All-Star is 216-112 in his career with the three Cy Young Awards and 75.4 WAR. Among active pitchers, only Verlander has more wins and only Verlander and Clayton Kershaw have a higher WAR.

ESPN’s David Schoenfield contributed to this report.

Sources close to the Blue Jays organization have confirmed that the team has reached a deal with free agent pitcher Max Scherzer. This blockbuster signing is sure to bolster the Blue Jays’ starting rotation and make them a serious contender in the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story. #BlueJays #MaxScherzer #MLBFreeAgency
