  • Natasha Howard bringing title experience to Fever, sources say

Three-time WNBA champion Natasha Howard will sign with the Indiana Fever as a free agent, sources told ESPN on Friday.

The two-time All-Star and 2019 defensive player of the year will bring veteran experience and a defensive presence to a Fever team led by the younger core of No. 1 overall picks Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston and star guard Kelsey Mitchell.

Howard, a 6-foot-2 forward, returns to the franchise that drafted her fifth overall in 2014 out of Florida State. She spent two seasons with the organization, where she was coached by the recently returning Stephanie White, before moving on to play for the Minnesota Lynx, Seattle Storm, New York Liberty and Dallas Wings. Howard was part of the Lynx’s 2017 championship squad and won a pair of titles in Seattle with Sue Bird and Breanna Stewart in 2018 and 2020.

With the Storm, Howard was named WNBA Most Improved Player in 2018 and had her career season in 2019, when Stewart was out with injury, earning an all-WNBA first-team nod, her first of two All-Star bids and her second all-defensive first team appearance.

Howard, also known for her ability to rim-run, averaged 17.6 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game in 2024 for the Wings.

Now with Howard to elevate the frontcourt, the surging Fever are looking to improve on last season’s 20-20 campaign and first-round playoff exit. This offseason, they brought back White for her second stint at the helm and re-signed Mitchell in free agency.

Free agent contracts can be signed beginning Saturday.

Natasha Howard, a two-time WNBA champion with the Seattle Storm, is reportedly bringing her championship experience to the Indiana Fever. According to sources, Howard’s leadership and winning mentality will be invaluable for a Fever team looking to make a playoff push.

The 6-foot-2 forward has proven herself as a versatile player on both ends of the court, with the ability to score, rebound, and defend at a high level. Her presence on the court will not only elevate the Fever’s performance but also provide mentorship to younger players on the roster.

Howard’s experience in big moments and her championship pedigree will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the Fever’s quest for success. With her on board, the Fever are poised to make a statement in the upcoming WNBA season.

Fans are eagerly anticipating Howard’s debut with the Fever and are excited to see how her leadership will shape the team’s future. Stay tuned for more updates on Natasha Howard’s impact on the Indiana Fever.

  • Sources — Blue Jays reach deal with free agent Max Scherzer

Free-agent right-hander Max Scherzer and the Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to a one-year, $15.5 million contract, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Thursday.

The future Hall of Famer, who turned 40 last July, is coming off an injury-plagued season with the Texas Rangers in which he made just nine starts and went 2-4 with a 3.95 ERA. He didn’t make his first start until June 23 following surgery in the offseason to repair a herniated disk in his back. He then missed all of August with shoulder fatigue, returning to make one start in September before a hamstring injury ended his season.

Once a durable workhorse who made 30-plus starts each season from 2009 through 2018, Scherzer has now missed significant time each of the past three seasons, making 23 starts in 2022 while missing time with an oblique strain and making 27 starts in 2023 due to a strained shoulder and back spasms.

When he did pitch, the stuff was diminished, even from the previous season. His fastball averaged 92.5 mph, the lowest of his career and down from 93.7 mph in 2023. His strikeout rate dropped to 22.6%, down from 28.0%, and well below his 2021-22 season, when he was over 30%. He allowed a .724 OPS, higher than the MLB average of .711.

Scherzer was a free agent for the third time in his career. Ahead of the 2015 season, he signed a seven-year, $210 million contract with the Washington Nationals that proved to be one of the best signings ever for a free-agent pitcher. Scherzer won the second and third Cy Young Awards of his career, finished in the top three in three other seasons and helped the Nationals win the World Series in 2019, going 3-0 with a 2.40 ERA that postseason, and started Game 7 of the World Series while pitching through a neck injury.

He was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2021 in the final year of that contract and then signed a three-year deal, $130 million deal with the New York Mets, the highest annual average value for a player at the time (matched a year later by Justin Verlander and then surpassed by Shohei Ohtani in 2024). The Mets made the playoffs that first year as Scherzer posted a 2.23 ERA, but he was traded to the Rangers in 2023 — and helped them to a World Series title, although injuries limited him to just 9.2 innings in three postseason starts (he did pitch three scoreless innings in his one World Series start).

The eight-time All-Star is 216-112 in his career with the three Cy Young Awards and 75.4 WAR. Among active pitchers, only Verlander has more wins and only Verlander and Clayton Kershaw have a higher WAR.

ESPN’s David Schoenfield contributed to this report.

Sources close to the Blue Jays organization have confirmed that the team has reached a deal with free agent pitcher Max Scherzer. This blockbuster signing is sure to bolster the Blue Jays’ starting rotation and make them a serious contender in the upcoming season. • Courtney Vandersloot is expected to sign with the Sky as an unrestricted free agent: sources

Courtney Vandersloot left the Sky in 2023 in pursuit of her second WNBA championship.

After accomplishing that goal with the Liberty last season, Vandersloot entered free agency with a new priority: compete for a franchise that values her. According to multiple sources out of Unrivaled, the Sky’s All-Time assist leader is expected to return to the franchise that drafted her with the third overall pick in the 2011 WNBA draft.

Vandersloot averaged 6.4 points and 4.8 assists, playing just 22.3 minutes per game last year for the Liberty. The five-time All-Star has been heavily pursued during free agency. Several franchises would expect her to come off the bench. She will have a starting role in Chicago and serve as the veteran presence they lacked last season.

Signing Vandersloot is another step in the Sky’s efforts to signal that they are a franchise worthy of the league’s top free agents.

    This is a developing story.

According to sources close to the situation, star point guard Courtney Vandersloot is expected to re-sign with the Chicago Sky as an unrestricted free agent. Vandersloot, who has been a vital part of the Sky’s success in recent years, is reportedly thrilled to continue her career with the team that she has helped lead to multiple playoff appearances.

  • Warriors among several teams back in the mix on Jimmy Butler as NBA trade deadline nears: Sources

The Golden State Warriors are one of several teams back in the running for Jimmy Butler’s services now that the Miami Heat have lowered their asking price, according to Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor.

Momentum for a trade may be picking up one day after Butler’s latest suspension by the Heat on Monday, his third this month. This suspension is “indefinite,” after Butler apparently walked out of shootaround Monday morning after learning the team wasn’t going to start him in its game against the Orlando Magic, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Butler will be suspended for a minimum of five games, which would run through the Feb. 6 trade deadline.

The NBA trade deadline is quickly approaching, and teams are scrambling to make moves to improve their rosters. One player who has been at the center of trade talks is Jimmy Butler, and several teams are back in the mix to acquire the talented guard.

According to sources, the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, and Miami Heat are among the teams interested in making a move for Butler. The Warriors are looking to add another star player to their already stacked lineup, while the Lakers are hoping to pair Butler with LeBron James to make a championship run. The Heat, on the other hand, are looking to bring Butler back to Miami, where he previously played before being traded to the Philadelphia 76ers.

With the trade deadline fast approaching, it will be interesting to see which team ultimately lands Butler and how it will impact the rest of the NBA landscape. Stay tuned for more updates as the deadline approaches.

  • Caitlin Clark disinclined to compete in NBA All-Star three-point contest, sources tell SBJ

    Stephen Gosling/NBAE via Getty Images

Caitlin Clark has told the NBA she is disinclined to participate in an All-Star Game three-point contest next month that could include Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Sabrina Ionescu, sources told SBJ, although indications are the league is still in discussions with Clark’s representatives.

Sources said Clark is not interested in shooting three-pointers off of a ball rack — considering her practice regimen consists only of catch-and-shoot three-pointers or shots off the dribble — and, unless she is persuaded otherwise, she will decline the invitation.

That decision would be somewhat of a blow to the league, which had contemplated moving what they call Steph vs. Sabrina 2.0 to the Sunday night of All-Star weekend, to be staged in between the second semifinal and championship game of the first ever All-Star tournament in San Francisco.

In another development, the league officially announced its Rising Stars Challenge rosters today, revealing that Bronny James would not be one of the seven G League players participating in the event. There had previously been the remote possibility that, if Bronny James was part of a team that won the Rising Stars Challenge, he could possibly face off against his father LeBron James in an All-Star semifinal on Sunday. But, according to Bleacher Report’s Chris Haynes, Bronny (averaging 16.3 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.2 assists in the G League) declined an invitation to play.

The league has spent the past year attempting to spruce up the Sunday portion of the All-Star Game, eventually drawing up the four-team tournament that included three teams of eight NBA All-Stars, plus the Rising Stars winner. And the idea of adding Clark to mix became a peripheral priority.

According to sources, the league reached out to the Fever guard through her close associates and agents, and the possibility still exists she could still accept their three-point shooting invitation. One scenario would have an NBA player such as Curry conceivably reciprocating and doing a similar shoot-out at the WNBA All-Star Game next summer.

“I wouldn’t say it’s over until the thing happens,’’ a source said of Clark’s decision. “A lot of this stuff comes together very, very late.’’

According to sources close to the situation, rising basketball star Caitlin Clark is reportedly disinclined to compete in the NBA All-Star three-point contest this year. Despite her impressive shooting skills and success on the court, it seems that Clark is choosing to focus on other aspects of her game at this time. • Sources – Brittney Griner agrees to 1-year deal with Dream

After 11 seasons with the Phoenix Mercury, 10-time WNBA All-Star Brittney Griner has agreed to a one-year deal with the Atlanta Dream, sources told ESPN on Tuesday.

Griner, who spent her entire career in Phoenix after being drafted No. 1 overall in 2013, heads to Atlanta in one of the most stunning free agency signings in league history.

The move can’t be made official until Saturday, when contracts are allowed to be signed.

Griner’s departure marks the official beginning of a new era for the Mercury, who could also be without Diana Taurasi for the first time in two decades if she decides to retire. Taurasi and Griner won the franchise its third and most recent championship in 2014.

The 6-foot-9 center missed the 2022 campaign when she was wrongfully detained in Russia for nearly 10 months. She was eventually freed in a high-profile prisoner exchange and returned to All-Star form in 2023 and 2024.

Griner, a six-time all-WNBA selection, goes to Atlanta as the biggest free agent signing in franchise history. She joins a team also headlined by Rhyne Howard, drafted first overall by the Dream in 2022, and Allisha Gray, for whom Atlanta traded for in 2023. The franchise moved on this offseason from former coach Tanisha Wright and hired Karl Smesko from Florida Gulf Coast University to lead the team.

The Las Vegas Aces also looked at signing Griner, sources told ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, in their long-standing effort to find another big to play alongside A’ja Wilson. But after acquiring former Seattle Storm guard Jewell Loyd and evaluating their style of play moving forward, sources said the Aces have turned their attention to other post players such as Cheyenne Parker-Tyus and trying to re-sign veterans Tiffany Hayes and Alysha Clark.

Earlier Tuesday, the Mercury also finalized a deal to acquire five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas and Ty Harris from the Connecticut Sun, sources told ESPN, a trade that will send Natasha Cloud, Rebecca Allen and the 2025 No. 12 overall pick to Uncasville.

According to sources, Phoenix is also expected to meet with Satou Sabally, who has requested a trade out of Dallas, and speak with free agent DeWanna Bonner.

ESPN’s Shams Charania contributed to this report.

Sources have confirmed that WNBA star Brittney Griner has agreed to a 1-year deal with the Atlanta Dream. This signing marks a significant move for the Dream, as Griner is considered one of the top players in the league.

  • Sources – Kings to open talks for potential De’Aaron Fox trade

The Sacramento Kings are expected to open up talks for a potential De’Aaron Fox trade ahead of the Feb. 6 deadline, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Tuesday.

Fox, 27, has one year left on his contract before he hits free agency in the summer of 2026.

There will be plenty of suitors for Fox, who made an All-NBA team in 2022-23, but it’s believed that the Kings point guard has a target destination in mind ahead of his free agency, sources said.

The Kings fired head coach Mike Brown last month after the team appeared to be falling short of expectations. Since then, the Kings have won 11 of their last 15 games under interim coach Doug Christie.

Sacramento enters Tuesday night’s games one loss up from the Golden State Warriors for the final play-in spot in the Western Conference.

Fox, in his eighth season in the league, is averaging 25.2 points and 6.2 assists while shooting 46.8% from the field.

Sources have indicated that the Sacramento Kings are open to discussing potential trade options for star point guard De’Aaron Fox. The Kings have reportedly reached out to multiple teams to gauge interest in a potential deal.

Fox, who is considered one of the top young point guards in the league, has been the subject of trade rumors in recent weeks. The Kings are said to be considering all options in order to improve their roster and build for the future.

While it remains to be seen whether a trade will ultimately come to fruition, the Kings are actively exploring their options and are open to moving Fox if the right deal presents itself.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing situation.

  • Sources – Mercury to acquire Alyssa Thomas in trade with Sun

The Phoenix Mercury are finalizing a trade to acquire five-time All-Star forward Alyssa Thomas from the Connecticut Sun, sources told ESPN on Tuesday.

Thomas, who had played her entire career with the Sun, leaves Connecticut as one of the greatest players in franchise history after helping the organization to six consecutive semifinal appearances as well as Finals berths in 2019 and 2022.

Thomas was an unrestricted free agent, but the Sun cored her, meaning the only way she could leave the team was to be traded. Thomas also had to sign off on her ultimate trade destination. Because the transaction involves a sign-and-trade, the move can’t be made official until Feb. 1.

The 6-foot-2 Thomas is regarded as one of the best defenders and facilitators in the league, establishing herself as one of the top players in the world as she has finished top-five in MVP voting each of the past three seasons.

Thomas, also a 2024 Olympian with USA Basketball, earned six All-Defensive Team nods in her career and is the league’s all-time triple-double leader with 11 in the regular season and four more in the postseason. She averaged 10.6 points, 7.9 assists and 8.4 rebounds last year with the Sun.

Aside from bringing in Thomas, the Mercury were already poised to look different next season. Brittney Griner is exploring free agency for the first time in her career, and Diana Taurasi is considering retiring.

In their first season under Nate Tibbetts, the Mercury were swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Minnesota Lynx.

Connecticut recently hired former Belgium national team coach Rachid Meziane to lead the organization, replacing Stephanie White, who left for the Indiana Fever.

Sources have confirmed that the Phoenix Mercury are set to acquire Alyssa Thomas in a trade with the Connecticut Sun. Thomas, a versatile forward known for her athleticism and defensive prowess, is expected to bring a significant boost to the Mercury’s lineup.

The deal, which is still pending league approval, is said to involve multiple players and draft picks. This trade marks a major move for both teams, as the Sun look to reshape their roster and the Mercury aim to strengthen their championship contending team.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing trade as more details emerge.

  • Man United continue to push for Patrick Dorgu deal – sources

Manchester United are continuing to work on a deal for Patrick Dorgu before the transfer deadline, sources have told ESPN.

Lecce have already knocked back an offer of €20 million ($20.9m) plus €5m in add-ons for the 20-year-old Denmark international.

Sources have told ESPN that talks between the two clubs are ongoing and that there is growing confidence an overall package of close to €40m can be agreed.

Ruben Amorim is keen to add a left wing-back to his squad in January. United, according to sources, have also explored the possibility of triggering their €18m buy-back option to re-sign Álvaro Fernández from Benfica.

The former Old Trafford academy graduate, who has impressed in Portugal, is considered a fallback option if a deal for Dorgu cannot be agreed. Should either Dorgu or Fernández arrive, United will listen to loan offers from Tyrell Malacia.

There’s hope that Luke Shaw is close to a comeback from injury and a temporary move until the end of the season would allow Malacia to play regularly. The Dutchman has made seven appearances this season after spending more than a year sidelined with a knee injury.

Sources have also told ESPN that United will listen to loan offers for Casemiro before Monday’s deadline. The Brazil international has started just one of the last 11 games and has been an unused substitute in the last six matches.

His last appearance was in the 2-0 defeat to Newcastle on Dec. 30. Roma have expressed interest in signing the 32-year-old until the end of the season.

Sources have told ESPN that United are willing to pay a portion of Casemiro’s wages — more than £300k-a-week — to make the move happen.

According to sources close to the club, Manchester United are continuing to push for a deal to sign Patrick Dorgu. The talented young midfielder has been on the radar of the Red Devils for some time now, and it seems they are determined to bring him to Old Trafford.

Dorgu, who currently plays for a top European club, has been turning heads with his performances on the pitch. His skill, vision, and creativity have caught the attention of many top clubs, but it seems United are the frontrunners in the race for his signature.

Reports suggest that negotiations are ongoing between the two clubs, with United keen to secure Dorgu’s services before the transfer window closes. The club’s management and coaching staff believe that the young midfielder has the potential to become a key player for the team in the future.

United fans will be eagerly awaiting any developments on this potential transfer, as the prospect of adding a player of Dorgu’s caliber to the squad is an exciting one. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Sources: Maya Brady to join Athletes Unlimited Softball League

Shortstop Maya Brady agreed to join the Athletes Unlimited Softball League on Tuesday, adding a significant presence to the burgeoning league that will hold its inaugural draft Wednesday night, sources told ESPN.

23-year-old Brady, a left-handed slugger who also plays outfield, is a two-time first-team All-American and Pac-12 Player of the Year who ranks second all-time in home runs at UCLA, a preeminent college softball program.

The AUSL, being run by former Miami Marlins general manager Kim Ng, will have four teams playing a 30-game schedule in six to eight cities — including suburban Chicago and Wichita — this summer before a planned transition to a fixed-city format in 2026. Each of the four teams — the Bandits, Blaze, Talons and Volts, who will choose in that order in the first round — will draft a dozen players and fill out their 16-woman roster with one free agent and three players from the college class of 2025.

The draft, which will be broadcast live on the ESPN app at 8 p.m. ET, will include two-way player Rachel Garcia, outfielder Amanda Lorenz, right-hander Megan Faraimo, right-hander Georgina Corrick, infielder Tiare Jennings and right-hander Montana Fouts in addition to Brady.

While a number of top softball players opt to play in the top-tier Japan Diamond Softball League, Brady chose the new league that includes all-time stars Lisa Fernandez (Talons) and Cat Osterman (Volts) as general managers. Other advisers to the league include Jennie Finch and Jessica Mendoza, also an ESPN analyst.

Brady, the niece of Tom Brady and former Major League Baseball All-Star Kevin Youkilis, finished her career at UCLA hitting .384/.464/.757 with 71 home runs and 246 RBIs in 249 games.

Athletes Unlimited previously has run four-week events and crowned individual champions based on a scoring system that awards players for on-field production. With an expected 30 games this summer broadcast on ESPN networks, the league is hoping to find more success than National Pro Fastpitch, which disbanded in 2021, and two other four-team leagues, Women’s Professional Fastpitch and Association of Fastpitch Professionals, which played in the summer of 2024.

“Softball is poised for tremendous growth at the professional level, and the AUSL is meeting the moment by creating the action-packed, world-class softball league that this sport has deserved for so long,” Ng said. “The caliber of players vying to be drafted tomorrow — Olympians, Team USA veterans, All-Americans and NCAA champions — further exemplifies that the world’s best players are here together as a unit of founding members who will make the AUSL the next big thing in women’s sports.”

Sources: Maya Brady to join Athletes Unlimited Softball League

According to sources close to the situation, standout softball player Maya Brady is set to join the Athletes Unlimited Softball League. The league, known for its fast-paced and competitive play, will provide an exciting new challenge for Brady as she continues to hone her skills and compete at the highest level.

Brady, who is the niece of NFL superstar Tom Brady, has already made a name for herself as a talented infielder and power hitter. Her addition to the Athletes Unlimited Softball League is sure to bring even more excitement and star power to the already impressive roster of players.
