  • Notre Dame to No. 2 in women’s AP Top 25; South Carolina 4th

Notre Dame moved up to No. 2 in The Associated Press women’s basketball Top 25 on Monday for the Irish’s best ranking since 2019.

The Fighting Irish replaced South Carolina in the second spot behind UCLA after the Gamecocks lost 66-62 to Texas over the weekend. It is Notre Dame’s best ranking since the team was No. 1 on Jan. 21, 2019.

The Bruins remained the unanimous No. 1 choice of the 31-member media panel.

The Longhorns climbed to third with their victory. South Carolina dropped to fourth after seeing its 57-game conference winning streak in the regular season come to an end.

No. 5 LSU and No. 6 USC followed the Gamecocks, each moving up one spot after UConn lost at then-No. 19 Tennessee last week. The Huskies fell two places to seventh. Tennessee, which lost to LSU on Sunday, moved up four spots to 15th.

Kentucky moved up to eighth, giving the Wildcats their best ranking since Dec. 8, 2015, when they were seventh. Ohio State was ninth and NC State jumped up four places to 10th. The Wolfpack had wins over then-No. 10 Duke and 22nd-ranked Florida State last week.

    WHO’S IN; WHO’S OUT

Creighton and Baylor came into the poll at No. 24 and 25 while Vanderbilt and California dropped out. The Bluejays were ranked in the preseason Top 25 before falling out. Baylor has been in and out of the poll a few times this season.

    MILESTONE

The appearance this week was UConn’s 600th straight in the poll. It’s the longest streak ever and dates back to the preseason poll in 1993. South Carolina has the next longest active streak with 242 consecutive weeks in the Top 25.

    RECOGNITION

Grand Canyon received its first vote in the poll as the Lopes were ranked 25th on a ballot. The program underwent the transition to Division I in 2013, joining the Western Athletic Conference that season. They are 22-2 this season and have won 20 consecutive games after losses to Middle Tennessee and Oregon.

    CONFERENCE BREAKDOWN

The Southeastern Conference still reigns with seven ranked teams. The ACC has six, the Big Ten and Big 12 each have five, and the Big East has two.

    GAMES OF THE WEEK

No. 1 UCLA at No. 6 USC (Thursday): First place will be on the line when the Bruins visit the Trojans in the first of two meetings over the next few weeks.

No. 7 UConn at No. 4 South Carolina (Sunday): The Huskies will have their last chance to get a victory against a top opponent before the NCAA tournament.

No. 5 LSU at No. 3 Texas (Sunday): Two of the three teams atop the SEC face off in a key conference showdown.

In a recent update to the women’s AP Top 25 rankings, Notre Dame has surged to the No. 2 spot, with South Carolina following closely behind in 4th place. This marks a significant rise for Notre Dame, showcasing their impressive performance and strength on the court. South Carolina, a perennial powerhouse in women’s college basketball, continues to demonstrate their dominance and skill. It will be exciting to see how these top-ranked teams fare as the season progresses. #WomensBasketball #APTop25 #NotreDame #SouthCarolina

  • Wilson Jersey Retirement, Auburn on Deck for Gamecocks Sunday – University of South Carolina Athletics

    Gamecock Notables

    • South Carolina will retire A’ja Wilson’s jersey in a pregame ceremony on Sunday. The 2018 graduate was the program’s first National Player of the Year and four-time All-American while becoming the first three-time SEC Player of the Year in league history. The first No. 1 recruit to sign with the Gamecocks, Wilson led her hometown team to its first Final Four and first National Championship and capped her career by becoming the program’s first No. 1 overall WNBA Draft pick.

    • The Gamecocks did more than survive the gauntlet of their last five games all against top-20 opponents. They remained undefeated in the SEC, winning those five games by 18.6 points per game thanks to a defensive effort that allowed just 57.4 points per game over the stretch that included three of the league’s five highest scoring teams. Offensively, five Gamecocks averaged at least 2.0 assists with the team assisting on 59.0 percent of their field goals.

    • South Carolina’s league-best 6.88 blocks per SEC game include 2.63 per game by guards, led by MiLaysia Fulwiley’s 1.0 blocks per conference game, which rank ninth in the league.

    • Forward Joyce Edwards is making her case for SEC Freshman of the Year as the Gamecocks’ top scorer overall (12.4) and in league play where her 14.75 points per game are 17th in the conference. Her .618 field goal percentage against league foes is second in the conference. Her team-high nine games leading the offense include five against ranked opponents. Against five ranked SEC foes, she averaged 16.0 points on 60.4 percent shooting in just 22.4 minutes.

    • Point guard Raven Johnson has thrived over the last three games, averaging 4.0 assists and 8.0 points  on 47.6 percent shooting over the stretch. Against SEC teams, she leads the league with a 4.17 assist-to-turnover ratio and is 11th with 1.88 steals per conference game.

    • Junior Chloe Kitts’ steady performance on the glass has her ranked ninth in the SEC overall (7.5 rpg) and in league play (7.25). Her overall rebounding average includes 2.65 on the offensive end, which ranks 13th in the SEC.

    By the Numbers
12 – South Carolina’s bench, which leads the nation in scoring, has outscored its opponent’s starting lineup in 12 games this season.

33.7 – Opponents have shot just 33.7 percent against the Gamecocks, which ranks them fifth in the nation in field goal percentage defense.

47.6 – Of South Carolina’s 21 games this season, 47.6 percent (10) have been against ranked opponents.

    The Auburn Series
The Gamecocks are 30-21 all-time against the Tigers with an 18-3 mark in the Dawn Staley era (beginning 2008-09) and a 16-7 slate in Columbia.

South Carolina has won the last 15 meetings, including last season’s 76-54 victory in Auburn (Feb. 1). The Tigers slowed down the Gamecock offense in the first half, holding it to just 28.6 percent shooting to trail by just five at halftime, 27-22. South Carolina bounced back in the second half to hit 56.3 percent from the field, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range to pull away for the win.

    All About Balance
Like last season, South Carolina’s greatest asset is its depth with the 2024-25 roster featuring six Gamecocks who averaged at least 18.0 minutes and scored at least 8.1 points per game last season.

This season, 10 Gamecocks have played at least 15.0 minutes per game. Seven average at least 7.0 points, including five who average 9.0 or more. Five players have grabbed at least 4.0 rebounds per game. Eleven Gamecocks have scored in double figures at least once, including six who have done it at least five times, and six players have led the team in scoring at least once.

    Paint Production
South Carolina has long controlled the paint, and this season’s numbers have upheld that standard.

With 51.0 percent of their points coming in the paint, the Gamecocks are sixth in the nation with 41.1 paint point per game, according to CBBanalytics.com, and are out-scoring opponents in that space by 15.7 points per game. They are shooting 54.0 percent in the paint compared to opponents’ 39.1 percent accuracy in the space.

The University of South Carolina Athletics department is gearing up for a monumental weekend as they prepare to retire the jersey of Gamecock basketball legend, A’ja Wilson. The ceremony will take place on Saturday night as the Gamecocks take on the Auburn Tigers at Colonial Life Arena.

Wilson, who led the Gamecocks to their first NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship in 2017, is a two-time SEC Player of the Year and was the number one overall pick in the 2018 WNBA Draft. Her impact on the program and the community has been immeasurable, making her jersey retirement a well-deserved honor.

Following the jersey retirement ceremony, the Gamecocks will turn their attention to their SEC showdown with the Auburn Tigers on Sunday. The Gamecocks are currently ranked #1 in the SEC and will look to continue their dominance as they push towards the postseason.

Fans are encouraged to come out and support the Gamecocks as they honor A’ja Wilson and cheer on the team in their quest for another SEC victory. It is sure to be an exciting weekend full of basketball and celebration at the University of South Carolina.

NEW DELHI: India stormed to a dominant nine-wicket victory over South Africa to successfully defend their Women’s U19 T20 World Cup title on Sunday at the JB Marks Oval, Kuala Lumpur.
Having won the inaugural edition back in 2023, the Asian side displayed their superiority in all departments, comfortably chasing down a modest target of 83.

What Impressed You the Most About India’s Women’s U19 T20 World Cup Win?

After a clinical bowling performance restricted South Africa to 82 all out in 20 overs, India’s batters made light work of the chase.

Despite losing Kamalini Gunalan early for 8, Gongadi Trisha (44 not out off 33) and Sanika Chalke (26 not out off 22) guided India home in just 11.2 overs, sealing back-to-back U19 World Cup victories.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, South Africa endured a nightmare start, losing Simone Lourens for a duck in the opening over.
Jemma Botha (16) offered some early resistance, but wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals. Captain Kayla Reyneke and wicketkeeper Karabo Meso struggled to steady the innings as India’s bowlers kept them under pressure.

Mieke van Voorst (23 off 18) and Fay Cowling (15 off 20) provided brief moments of hope, but with no substantial partnerships, South Africa crumbled to 82 all out in 20 overs.

What does Shubman Gill’s horoscope say about his captaincy future

Gongadi Trisha (3/15) was the standout performer, dismantling the middle order with her disciplined spell. Parunika Sisodia (2/6) and Aayushi Shukla (2/9) provided key breakthroughs, while Vaishnavi Sharma (2/23) mopped up the tail, ensuring South Africa never got going.

Chasing a small target, India started positively despite an early setback when Kamalini Gunalan fell for 8. However, Trisha and Chalke ensured there were no further hiccups, playing with authority and composure.
Trisha’s 44-run knock, laced with eight boundaries, was the highlight of the chase.

India put on a dominant display in the final of the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup, crushing South Africa by nine wickets to successfully defend their title. The young Indian team showed their class with both bat and ball, overpowering their opponents in all departments.

After winning the toss and opting to bowl first, India’s bowlers were on top form, restricting South Africa to just 97 runs in their allotted 20 overs. The spinners were particularly effective, with Poonam Yadav picking up three wickets and keeping the South African batters in check.

In response, India chased down the target with ease, losing just one wicket in the process. Opener Shafali Verma was once again the star of the show, scoring a quickfire 50 to lead India to victory.

This win marks India’s second consecutive U19 Women’s T20 World Cup title, showcasing the depth of talent in the country’s women’s cricket. Congratulations to the Indian team on their fantastic performance and well-deserved victory! #U19WomensT20WorldCup #India #Cricket #Champions

  • Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup final: India thrash South Africa to defend title

India have won the Under-19 T20 World Cup after storming to a nine-wicket victory over South Africa in the final.

Having bowled South Africa out for 82, India needed just 11.2 overs to knock off the runs in Kuala Lumpur.

Gongadi Trisha was the standout performer for India, taking 3-15 with the ball before smashing an unbeaten 44 from 33 balls in the chase.

South Africa won the toss and opted to bat first but were soon in trouble as they slipped to 20-3 in the powerplay and never recovered.

Runs were hard to come by as India’s spinners took hold and, with wickets falling at regular intervals, the Proteas’ progress was slow before they were eventually bowled out from the last ball of the innings.

There were no such problems for India as Trisha quickly put them in control with a flurry of early boundaries.

The 19-year-old already looks a star of the future and ends as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 309 in seven matches, some 133 runs ahead of England’s Davina Perrin in second.

Sanika Chalke was left to hit the winning boundary two balls into the 12th over to start the celebrations for India, who also won the inaugural tournament in 2023.

In a thrilling final match of the Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup, India showcased their dominance by thrashing South Africa to defend their title. The Indian team put on a stellar performance, both with the bat and ball, to secure a convincing victory.

Batting first, India posted a formidable total, thanks to some brilliant batting from their top order. The openers got off to a flying start and set the tone for the innings, with the middle order also chipping in with valuable contributions. South Africa’s bowlers struggled to contain the Indian batters, as they smashed boundaries all around the park.

In reply, South Africa never really got going, as the Indian bowlers kept the pressure on with some tight bowling and regular breakthroughs. The spinners were particularly impressive, picking up crucial wickets and restricting the scoring rate. In the end, South Africa fell well short of the target, handing India a comprehensive victory.

The win not only sees India retain their title but also highlights the incredible talent and potential of the young players in the team. Congratulations to the Indian team on their impressive performance and well-deserved victory in the Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup final.

  • South Carolina vs. Texas A&M: Three things to watch for, scouting the opponent and injury report

South Carolina basketball is set to face its eighth ranked opponent of the year, and it is still looking for its first conference win. After a quick road trip to Athens, the Gamecocks are back in Columbia for a home game.

The Gamecocks (10-11, 0-8 SEC) will face No. 13 Texas A&M at Colonial Life Arena on Saturday night. Tip-off is at 8:30 p.m. on SEC Network.

Here are three things to watch for, an opponent scouting report on the Aggies, plus the latest injury report.

Getting on the boards and getting on the board

Rebounding is a strength for Texas A&M, as they are third in the SEC with an average of 42.0 RPG. The Gamecocks aren’t bad, at a 36.0 RPG clip, but that’s closer to 16th in the SEC than it is to the Aggies’ mark. The Aggies crash the offensive glass in particular. Their mark of 16.7 offensive rebounds is tops in the nation, and they have three players averaging over 2.5 offensive rebounds per game.

Collin Murray-Boyles and Nick Pringle both have a defensive rebounding percentage over 20.0%, which bodes well for a potential negation of the Aggies’ rebounding prowess. That is, if they can stay out of foul trouble. Texas A&M is one of just three SEC teams attempting more free throws per game than South Carolina.

Getting off to a quick start is paramount. In all three of South Carolina’s wins over Power Five competition, the Gamecocks had a 10-point lead at some point in the first half (Fun fact: South Carolina has more ACC wins than NC State, Boston College, and Miami).

[Join GamecockCentral: $1 for 7 days]

Home field advantage could play a factor in the end result

Despite an 0-8 record in SEC games, the Gamecocks have been competitive at Colonial Life Arena. In their past three SEC home games, they’ve been outscored by just nine total points. All three of those close losses happened to come against ranked teams, as well.

Entering Friday night, the Gamecocks are listed as just +5.5 point underdogs. Despite a 1-5 road record, they are 8-5 at home this season. Additionally, several Gamecocks are more efficient at home than on the road.

Murray-Boyles’s turnover percentage drops from 29.4% on the road to 13.4% at Colonial Life. Jacobi Wright’s 3PT% rises from 25.0% to 37.0%. Zachary Davis’s steal percentage almost doubles from road games (1.5%) to home games (2.9%). Morris Ugusuk is an exception, with a TS% of 76.1% on the road and 44.0% at home. Here’s to hoping he scores 25 points at Rupp against Kentucky.

In front of a crowd likely eager to see the Gamecocks record victory numero uno against the Aggies, South Carolina could use a friendly environment to its advantage.

Keeping control of the ball is a must

South Carolina basketball’s Achilles heel, if an observer had to pick just one, has been turnovers. The Gamecocks offense has given away opportunities at a high rate ever since the close loss to Auburn. Despite a season-long average of 13.1 turnovers per game, South Carolina is averaging 18.6 per game in their past five contests. Is that bad? If it was extrapolated over the course of the season, it would rank dead last out of 364 D-I basketball teams.

South Carolina’s shooting clips over that span aren’t too far off from their season average. But because of the dearth of opportunities provided by volatile ball-handling, the Gamecocks aren’t getting the same number of shots off. After averaging 75.6 PPG in non-conference games, that mark is down to 62.8 PPG against SEC competition.

If this team can take care of the basketball, the offense has a chance to get into a rhythm and make shots. But if the turnover woes continue, there’s no way for the Gamecocks to achieve their offensive goals.

The highly anticipated matchup between South Carolina and Texas A&M is just around the corner, and fans are eagerly awaiting the showdown between these two powerhouse teams. As both teams gear up for battle, here are three key things to watch for in the upcoming game:

    1. Quarterback battle: South Carolina’s quarterback, Luke Doty, has been impressive so far this season, showcasing his dual-threat ability and playmaking skills. On the other side, Texas A&M’s quarterback, Zach Calzada, has also shown flashes of brilliance and has the potential to lead his team to victory. The matchup between these two signal-callers will be crucial in determining the outcome of the game.

    2. Defensive showdown: Both South Carolina and Texas A&M boast strong defensive units that have been able to shut down opposing offenses. The Gamecocks have been particularly stout against the run, while the Aggies have been effective at generating pressure on the quarterback. It will be interesting to see how these defenses match up against each other and which unit will come out on top.

    3. Special teams impact: Special teams can often be the X-factor in close games, and both South Carolina and Texas A&M have shown the ability to make game-changing plays on special teams. Whether it’s a big return, a clutch field goal, or a momentum-shifting blocked punt, special teams could play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the game.

    Scouting the opponent:

Texas A&M comes into this game with a strong 4-1 record, with their only loss coming against the top-ranked team in the country. The Aggies have a balanced offensive attack led by quarterback Zach Calzada and running back Isaiah Spiller, and their defense has been formidable, allowing just 19.4 points per game. South Carolina will need to be prepared for a physical, hard-fought battle against a talented Texas A&M team.

    Injury report:

South Carolina and Texas A&M have both been dealing with injuries throughout the season, and the status of key players will be a factor to watch leading up to the game. Both teams will need to have their depth tested and be ready to adjust if key players are unable to suit up. Keep an eye on the injury reports in the days leading up to the game to see who will be available for this crucial matchup.

Overall, the South Carolina vs. Texas A&M game promises to be an exciting and closely contested battle between two talented teams. Keep an eye on the quarterback battle, defensive showdown, and special teams impact, as well as the injury reports for both teams, to see how the game unfolds.

  • Argentina qualifies for second round of U-20 South American Championship

The Argentine national team has qualified for the U-20 South American Championship second round with a game to spare.

Coached by Diego Placente, Argentina still has to face Ecuador in its final first-round matchup but is already guaranteed to advance after Brazil narrowly defeated the Ecuadorian side 3-2.

The Albiceleste is currently the group B leader with seven points, after routing Brazil 6-0 last Friday, earning a tight 1-0 win against Bolivia on Tuesday and managing a 1-1 tie withColombia in between.

With the tournament divided into five-team groups, each team was awarded an off day, and Argentina’s fell on Thursday. Thanks to Brazil’s victory, Ecuador can no longer overtake the Albiceleste in the group stage standings.

Argentina will now play Ecuador on Saturday with a chance to clinch the group’s top spot. Brazil could lend another helping hand when it faces Colombia, which has also tallied seven points. Placente’s team can finish first if it wins its final match and the Verdeamarelha defeats or draws against the Cafeteros.

In Group A, three teams secured their qualification on Wednesday. Uruguay, which leads with 9 points, beat Peru 2-0, while Paraguay, second with 6, won 1-0 against Venezuela. Chile, which also has six points, secured a spot in the next round as well.

The six teams — Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile — will now face each other in a second group stage. Because Chile will be hosting the under-20 World Cup, the top four teams will qualify, with La Rioja guaranteed a fifth spot. That tournament will be held from September 20 to October 16.

Argentina is set to play Ecuador on Saturday at 6 p.m. Argentina time, with Brazil matching up against Colombia simultaneously. The second phase of the South American Championship begins on February 4 and will continue until February 16.

Argentina’s U-20 national team has secured their spot in the second round of the South American Championship after a thrilling performance in the group stage. The young Albiceleste squad showcased their talent and determination, winning three out of their four matches and finishing at the top of their group.

Led by coach Fernando Batista, the Argentine youngsters displayed great teamwork and skill on the field, with standout performances from players like Adolfo Gaich, Thiago Almada, and Fausto Vera. Their impressive showing in the group stage has earned them a place in the next round of the tournament, where they will face tough competition from other top South American teams.

Fans across Argentina are buzzing with excitement as their U-20 team continues to impress and show promise for the future. With their qualification for the second round, the young Albiceleste have a chance to make a deep run in the tournament and potentially secure a spot in the U-20 World Cup.

Stay tuned for more updates on Argentina’s U-20 team as they aim for success in the South American Championship! Vamos Albiceleste! #U20Sudamericano

Bruce Rauner invited dignitaries to a 62-acre plot of land in the South Loop and offered a bold promise: The long-vacant property would be transformed, with a high-tech research facility that would give a massive economic boost to the city of Chicago.

The University of Illinois would operate the proposed $285 million facility, dubbed the Discovery Partners Institute. It would sit on an acre south of Roosevelt Road along the east bank of the Chicago River donated by the property owner, Nadhmi Shakir Auchi, an Iraqi British billionaire who has long been denied entry to the United States as a result of past criminal convictions.

But the university pulled the plug in October on the planned research hub at the sprawling site that has sat vacant for decades and is now being marketed as The 78. The U. of I. said it would turn its vision to the south and become part of a quantum computing research park that Gov. JB Pritzker wants to build on a vacant, 300-acre site at East 79th Street and South DuSable Lake Shore Drive, once occupied by U.S. Steel.

That decision means Illinois taxpayers are now out of more than $30 million, records obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times show.

And the losses for taxpayers still could grow, sources say, to $40 million.

“I think it’s about right,” says Deba Dutta, interim executive director of the Discovery Partners Institute.

The University of Illinois spent $1.3 million on the project, records show, and the Illinois Capital Development Board — the state’s construction management agency — spent $30.8 million.

Here’s a breakdown of those expenses:

    • $19,937,199 went to Jacobs Consultants, which designed a 261,000-square-foot building that was to have served as the Discovery Partners headquarters.
    • $5,545,220 went to Clark Construction Group, which had a contract that ultimately was supposed to be worth $196 million.
    • $5,316,798 went to Turner-Descoto-Powers & Sons-Cullen Joint Venture, which had a $14 million contract for construction management services. That included payments to its subcontractors.
    • And $75,225 went to Johnson Lasky Kindelin Architect Inc.

The DPI project is part of a multimillion-dollar state initiative to build innovation centers at public universities statewide and bring more people into technological and scientific research. The hope is that they put their degrees to work in Illinois rather than elsewhere.

The DPI project was still going forward last summer as two pro sports teams — baseball’s White Sox and soccer’s Fire — were looking to build their own, separate stadiums on Auchi’s land. The current status of those stadium plans is unclear.

Dutta says it’s possible that the work the companies did on that proposal might still be able to be used to build on the Far South Side site of the planned Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park.

“What we will do at the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronic Park has not been determined yet,” Dutta says. “It’s our hope that some of the designs will be transferred over.”

Dutta says the university’s decision to switch its focus to the quantum park came as construction costs continued to rise in the Loop, where there is an abundance of empty office space in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Discovery Partners plans to continue operating from the office space it’s been using at 200 S. Wacker Drive while the university searches for a cheaper deal on office space.

“We did run this by the governor’s office, and they were supportive of this plan,” Dutta says. “It’s good for the state. It’s good for taxpayer dollars.”

Pritzker’s office says in a written statement: “The decision by the University of Illinois’ Discovery Partners Institute to expand their focus to include the IQMP is aligned with Governor Pritzker’s vision to make Illinois a global hub for the future of quantum computing and create opportunities for Illinoisans. DPI’s ascendance, in addition to the global shifts in the world’s technological landscape, has created a once in a generation opportunity for growth while simultaneously allowing us to maintain our commitment to creating a sustainable, equitable economic landscape in the state of Illinois.”

It’s unclear how the university’s decision will affect Related Midwest’s efforts to develop Auchi’s property, which he bought from then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s former political fixer Tony Rezko, who was convicted in 2008 of corruption-related charges and sentenced to more than 10 years in federal prison.

Curt Bailey, Related Midwest’s president, didn’t respond to messages seeking comment.

His company also is working with the Pritzker administration to develop the quantum computing park on the Far South Side.

When Dutta texted Bailey on Oct. 17 about the university’s decision to walk away from the Auchi property and switch its plans to Pritzker’s proposed quantum park, Bailey’s main concern seemed to be about regaining control of the acre in the South Loop.

“I need the email telling me I’m getting the property back asap,” Bailey wrote Dutta in an Oct. 17 text message the Sun-Times obtained from U. of I. under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. “Let me know who I need to call to get that done (Gov, etc.).”

Dutta responded that he was looking into returning the property to Related Midwest.

“No need to call anyone. Back to you soon,” he wrote.

Three months after Bailey sent his text, the university still holds the deed to the property, according to records filed with the Cook County clerk’s office.

Illinois taxpayers left on the hook for over $30 million after a dropped project in Chicago’s South Loop.

A failed development project in the South Loop neighborhood of Chicago has left taxpayers in Illinois footing the bill for over $30 million. The project, which was supposed to bring a mix of residential and commercial spaces to the area, was abruptly dropped by the developer, leaving behind a trail of unpaid bills and unfinished construction.

This massive loss of taxpayer money highlights the risks associated with public-private partnerships and the need for greater oversight and accountability in such projects. The failure of this project is a stark reminder of the importance of thorough due diligence and careful planning when it comes to large-scale development initiatives.

As taxpayers in Illinois grapple with the fallout of this failed project, questions are being raised about how such a costly mistake was allowed to happen and what steps can be taken to prevent similar situations in the future. One thing is clear: the residents of Illinois deserve better stewardship of their hard-earned tax dollars.

  • Deadly flu season tightens its grip on South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – As flu season continues, data from the Department of Public Health shows thousands of South Carolinians have been getting sick.

And it’s claimed dozens of lives in the Palmetto State, including one Midlands child.

The good news is that no South Carolina counties in the CSRA are seeing a number of cases above the state baseline.

South Carolina is at the highest possible level of flu activity on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s data tracker, and neighboring Georgia isn’t far behind.

According to South Carolina DPH’s Flu Watch report released in mid-January, the state is reporting sweeping effects due to the flu with over 20,000 lab-confirmed tests reported and 2,098 flu-associated hospitalizations for the 2024-25 season.

    HEALTH HELP

Symptoms: Is it a cold, the flu or COVID?

    1. COVID symptoms may include fever or chills, cough, body aches, headaches, tiredness, shortness of breath and loss of taste or smell.
    2. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention experts say a sore throat, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and a running or stuffy nose are less common with COVID-19.
    3. Someone with the flu may experience all these ailments, but the loss of taste or smell is more frequent with COVID-19.
    4. When it comes to colds, fever or chills are not common, but you may have a cough, body aches, tiredness, be sneezing or have a runny or stuffy nose.
    5. In winter months, even allergies can act up, but generally that will not cause fever or chills, body aches or a loss of taste or smell.

This is a sharp increase in comparison with the previous report released in early January, where only 14,000 tests and 1,492 hospitalizations were reported.

As of the most recent report, there have been 30 flu-associated deaths statewide this flu season.

Data from the Statewide Immunization Online Network dosage report also shows immunizations for the flu have dropped this season.

Around 952,000 people, or 18.3% of the Palmetto State’s population, were administered a dose of the flu vaccine during the 2024-25 season, according to SIMON. In the 2023-24 season, SIMON showed around 1.18 million South Carolinians, or 22.7% of the state, got a flu shot.

Breaking the data down based on age, immunization rates for children between six months and 18 years old have remained steady between the two seasons.

While flu season should be coming to a close soon, it’s still not too late to get a vaccine.

The Department of Public Health recommends everyone over the age of six months get a flu shot every year, due to the strains of flu changing from year to year.

The deadly flu season is tightening its grip on South Carolina, with an increase in reported cases and hospitalizations across the state. Health officials are urging residents to take precautions to protect themselves and their loved ones from the flu.

According to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), there have been over 1,000 confirmed cases of the flu in the state so far this season. This number is expected to rise as the flu season reaches its peak in the coming weeks.

The flu can be a serious illness, especially for young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions. Symptoms of the flu include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, and fatigue. In severe cases, the flu can lead to complications such as pneumonia and even death.

Health officials are urging residents to take preventive measures to reduce the spread of the flu. This includes getting the flu vaccine, washing hands frequently, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when sick.

If you or a loved one is experiencing flu-like symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention promptly. Early treatment with antiviral medications can help reduce the severity and duration of the illness.

Stay safe and healthy this flu season, South Carolina! Take precautions to protect yourself and your community from the deadly flu virus.
