  • Southeast Notes: Ball, Adebayo, Ware, Herro, Hawks

LaMelo Ball leads the Eastern Conference All-Star voting among guards despite the Hornets‘ poor record (11-28). However, Ball has stepped up his game, particularly on defense, Roderick Boone of the Charlotte Observer writes.

Ball had 23 points, nine assists and seven rebounds in Charlotte’s victory over Dallas on Monday afternoon.

“His two-way play has really helped us,” coach Charles Lee said. “We’ve made an effort to play with more pace offensively. I think the whole squad has really bought into that and he’s really the head of the snake when it comes to pace, and his attack and willingness to either go finish in the attack or collapse the defense and kick out for some early opportunities.

“And then defensively, he’s denying (Kyrie) Irving at the end of the game, being more physical. I feel like in our transition defense, we are having a lot more communication and urgency to get back. So, just really impressed with his two-way game and not trying to be offensively focused.”

We have more from the Southeast Division:

    • The pairing of Bam Adebayo and rookie Kel’el Ware gave the Heat a “dynamic” new look, according to Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald. At the end of the first half and beginning of the second half, the Heat went on a 36-13 run against San Antonio on Sunday with the two bigs playing together. “Right now, defensively that just looked like it was elite,” coach Erik Spoelstra said. “So if I have to lean into this thing defensively right now for our team to get to another level, I will. That could be a path and we’ll dive into this. But that looks like a path where we can find some higher success, at least on one side of the floor.”
    • Tyler Herro is averaging career bests in points, rebounds and assists and the Heat wing is drawing extra defensive attention. Lakers coach JJ Redick says the Herro needs to be guarded like Stephen Curry. Adebayo said it’s a learning experience for Herro, Chiang writes “He is the focal point of a lot of scouting reports,” he said. “So for us, it’s understanding that he’s got to play kind of like Steph. He might not get the ball, but go set a screen, go screen somebody. That’s how you get yourself open. Me and him had that conversation during the (Spurs) game. He was like, ‘Man, what am I supposed to do?’ I was like, ‘Just go screen for somebody.’ Literally if they’re face-guarding you, just go screen for somebody. Somebody is going to be open.”
    • The Hawks have the East’s fourth-best record in large part because they’re handling adversity better, according to Lauren Williams of the Atlanta Journal Constitution. They have a 6-2 record against the teams above them in the conference standings. “Your hope is when you find adversity in the game, because it comes in a lot of different forms that that can bring you together and you can raise your level, as opposed to it splitting you apart,” coach Quin Snyder said.

Southeast Notes: Ball, Adebayo, Ware, Herro, Hawks

In the Southeast division of the NBA, there are several players and teams making headlines. Let’s take a look at some of the latest news and updates from the region:

    – LaMelo Ball continues to impress for the Charlotte Hornets, showing off his playmaking ability and flashy passes. The rookie point guard has quickly become a fan favorite and a key piece for the Hornets moving forward.

    – Bam Adebayo is having a standout season for the Miami Heat, showcasing his defensive prowess and improved offensive game. Adebayo’s versatility on both ends of the court has been a major factor in the Heat’s success this season.

    – LaMelo Ball’s older brother, Lonzo Ball, has been linked to a potential trade to the New Orleans Pelicans. The younger Ball has expressed interest in playing with his brother in the NBA, leading to speculation about a potential reunion in New Orleans.

    – Tyler Herro has been a key contributor for the Miami Heat this season, providing scoring off the bench and stepping up in crunch time. Herro’s ability to create his shot and knock down clutch shots has been crucial for the Heat’s success.

    – The Atlanta Hawks have been surging in the Eastern Conference, led by All-Star point guard Trae Young. The Hawks have shown improvement on both ends of the court and are looking like a playoff contender in the East.

Overall, the Southeast division is filled with exciting players and teams to watch. Keep an eye on these players and teams as the season progresses.

A decision regarding school operations for Friday, January 24, 2025, will be made on Thursday after further assessment of conditions.

    Pierce County

Pierce County Schools will remain closed Thursday, January 23 due to hazardous road conditions. All after school activities will be canceled.

“We will evaluate road conditions and weather tomorrow to make a decision about Friday. It is a great day to stay home, stay warm, and make a snowman!” said School Superintendent Dara Bennett.

  • Driving instructor advises caution as ice grips Southeast Texas

In the usually hot and humid Southeast Texas climate, it will come as no surprise that many of its residents have never driven in the snow.

BEAUMONT, Texas — As icy conditions are expected to grip Southeast Texas roads, a driving instructor is urging people to stay home. However, if driving can’t be avoided try to avoid slippery overpasses and bridges.

In the usually hot and humid Southeast Texas climate, it will come as no surprise that many of its residents have never driven in the snow.

“I’ve never driven in the snow all this time living in Texas. Because it’s a surprise for me, it’s hot in this place,” said resident Patricia Roscio Washington.

Now, an upcoming winter storm will be creating an unexpected challenge for drivers in the area.

“My recommendation is everybody you know, don’t drive outside at this time. Stay safe with your family and everything. You don’t got nothing to do outside stay in home and that’s it,” said another Beaumont resident.

Although staying off the road is recommended, many will not be able to stay home when the snow hits.

“Very, very nervous cause I was supposed to work that day, so I’m very nervous,” said resident Sunterrie Walker.

Driving Safety Instructor for Courtesy Wheels Defensive Driving School, Shirley Walker, says if you must drive there are a few steps you can follow to stay safe.

“If you have to get out in it I’m telling you to drive slow. It is not against the law to reduce your speed in bad weather,” said Walker. “Rule of thumb says 25 miles under the posted speed is what’s safe.”

Walker says when driving on ice, it is important to leave a little extra space between you and the car in front of you to allow those cars to break if necessary.

“If you slam on the breaks on the icy road of course you’re going to skid. There’s no doubt about it,” said Walker.

Instead lightly tap the breaks if the car does hydroplane.

“The first thing that you should do is drive into the direction of the skid. Do not try to correct your car while you’re in a skid. Do not let go of the wheel, maintain the vehicle at all times,” said Walker.

Once full control is regained, turn the steering wheel of the car in the direction you want to go.

Walker says that another potential hazard to be warry of is black ice. This form of ice is notoriously hard to see while driving, which is why it is important to lower your speed and avoid tailgating.

With winter weather hitting Southeast Texas, driving instructor urges caution on the roads. Snow and ice can make driving conditions dangerous, so it’s important to take extra precautions when behind the wheel. Remember to slow down, leave plenty of space between vehicles, and avoid sudden movements that could cause you to lose control. Stay safe out there! #DriveSafe #WinterWeather #SoutheastTexas

Winter Storm Enzo has brought rare, record-breaking snow to parts of the Gulf Coast, snarling travel and resulting in historic snowfall totals from New Orleans to Florida.

(MORE: Why We Name Winter Storms And The 2024-25 List)

New Orleans picked up 8 inches, making it the heaviest snowfall there in modern day records (since 1948) and the city’s biggest total in over 100 years.

By nightfall, skiers were skiing and snowfall fights had been had on Bourbon Street and ice hockey had been played on Canal Street. It wasn’t just partygoers wearing green, purple and gold weeks ahead of Mardi Gras, but also snowmen. Cafe Du Monde served up plentiful snowflakes with its beignets. Streetcar tracks and palm trees in the city were covered in snow.

Florida has likely broken its state snowfall record. Milton, Florida, the state’s previous record holder, picked up 8.8 inches of snow. This is much higher than the 4-inch record set on March 6, 1954, near Milton. Snowplows were out Tuesday night clearing parts of Interstate 10.

    Estimated Snowfall So Far

Reported snowfall totals by state so far, through 11:30 p.m. EST:

    • Alabama: 11 inches in Babbie (southeast Alabama)
    • Florida: 8.8 inches in Milton (north of Pensacola)*
    • Georgia: 7 inches in Blakely and Leesburg (southwest Georgia)
    • Louisiana: 11.5 inches in Chalmette (near New Orleans)
    • Mississippi: 9 inches in Ocean Springs
    • North Carolina: 2 inches in Hampstead
    • South Carolina: 3 inches near Conway
    • Texas: 6 inches near Pine Island (near Beaumont)

    * a potential state record

    imageimage

    Here’s a state-by-state recap:

    Texas

Up to 4.2 inches of snow had fallen in the Houston metro area while flurries fell in Galveston. Snow even fell as far south as Brownsville, Texas, early Tuesday. Gusts to 44 mph were also recorded there.

Up to a quarter inch of ice accreted earlier Tuesday in south Texas, where some power outages are being reported.

    Louisiana

Southern Louisiana picked up some 8-10 inches of snow in a once-in-a-generation event.

An unprecedented blizzard warning was issued for southwest Louisiana and extreme southeast Texas during the morning hours. It was the first in Louisiana’s history.

Bouts of moderate to heavy snow fell and accumulated in New Orleans, where wind gusts occasionally topped 35 mph. Near-blizzard conditions were recorded at the city’s Lakefront Airport.

Thundersnow was reported near Lafayette. Airboats commonly used for traversing the bayous that Louisiana is known for were instead used for doing donuts in the snow.

Down on the coast, snow piled up right up to the water in the Gulf.

    Alabama

Mobile saw 7.5 inches in the storm, which is the most the Gulf Coast city has seen for any snow event on record dating to the late 1800s.

    Mississippi

Biloxi, home of the Hurricane Hunters, saw heavy snow Tuesday afternoon. The city picked up at least 5 inches of new snow, but other parts of southern Mississippi picked up as much as 9 inches. The snow coated streets, signs and even the beach. Visibility dropped at times as low as one-quarter mile.

Before the storm hit, the Hurricane Hunters took flight into Winter Storm Enzo to investigate the storm as it neared the Gulf.

    Florida

In addition to the Milton preliminary state record mentioned earlier, Pensacola also saw record-breaking snowfall.

The storm total of 7.6 inches is the heaviest this city has seen since the late-1800s. The previous record was a 3-inch snowstorm in February 1895

Winter Storm Enzo is set to bring rare snow and ice to the Southeast Coast this weekend. With temperatures dropping and precipitation on the rise, residents are being urged to take precautions and prepare for potentially hazardous conditions.

From North Carolina to Florida, areas that don’t typically see much snowfall are bracing for a winter wonderland. The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings and advisories for several states along the coast, warning of icy roads and slippery conditions.

Meteorologists are predicting significant snowfall accumulations in some areas, along with the potential for freezing rain and sleet. This could lead to power outages, travel disruptions, and dangerous road conditions.

Residents are advised to stay indoors if possible, stock up on supplies, and avoid unnecessary travel. It’s important to stay informed and follow any updates from local authorities and emergency services.

Winter Storm Enzo is a reminder that winter weather can be unpredictable, so it’s best to be prepared and stay safe during these challenging conditions. Let’s all stay warm and stay safe as we weather the storm together.

  • Houston power outages: Utility companies say crews are prepared for the January 2025 winter storm hitting southeast Texas

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — As the weather begins to roll in, one concern for many is keeping the power on for the millions of people who live across our area.

Utility companies across the area told ABC13 that crews have been working around the clock to prepare for the winter storm, saying they’re ready for whatever could come through.

CenterPoint Energy brought in additional resources from other states to prepare for this storm.

Representatives say it’s been a logistical challenge, but the forecast is one thing in their favor. They say less ice is expected, which should help prevent potential outages.

They told ABC13 they are concerned about drivers who could crash into power poles.

After mass power outages during Hurricane Beryl a few months ago, CenterPoint told ABC13 they had a call for change. They said they focused on more tree trimming and adding more and sturdier poles.

Eyewitness News said they feel confident with the improvements made.

Representatives with CenterPoint are doubling down on their readiness for anything and their ability to handle this winter storm.

“I mean, we have 3,000 workers here between our own crews and folks that work for CenterPoint locally. As well as 1,200 additional assistance folks from across the country. So, we feel scaled really well to meet the challenge,” Senior Vice President and Chief Communications and Marketing Officer Keith Stephens said.

Entergy Texas and Texas New Mexico Power also tell us they have line workers across the area standing by for the potential impacts this winter storm could have on you at home.

  • Dangerous cold prompts school closings throughout Southeast Michigan

NEXT Weather Alert: Tracking dangerous cold. 1/20/2025

NEXT Weather Alert: Tracking dangerous cold. 1/20/2025

    02:44

(CBS DETROIT) — Dangerously cold temperatures have prompted school districts across Southeast Michigan to close for Tuesday.

A cold weather advisory is in effect through Wednesday across the region. Advisories are issued when wind chills reach -15 to -24 degrees Fahrenheit.

Dangerously low wind chill temperatures between -15 and -25 degrees are expected over the next few nights. There is little relief during the daytime, as high temperatures in the single digits and wind chills at or below -10 degrees are expected.

Latest school closings and delays for Tuesday

As temperatures in Southeast Michigan plummet to dangerous lows, school districts across the region are taking precautions and closing their doors to keep students safe. With wind chills expected to reach well below zero, officials are urging residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.

The decision to close schools comes as a result of the extreme cold weather advisory issued by the National Weather Service, warning of frostbite and hypothermia risks for those exposed to the elements. Many districts have also cited concerns about transportation difficulties and heating issues that could pose a threat to students and staff.

Parents are advised to check their school district’s website or local news outlets for updates on closures and delayed openings. It is important to prioritize safety during this frigid weather, and to make sure that children are dressed appropriately if they must be outside.

Stay warm, stay safe, and stay informed as we weather this dangerous cold snap in Southeast Michigan.

  • Southeast Michigan school closings: Tuesday closures rolling in amid arctic blast

While many Metro Detroit schools are closed Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, others are already announcing that they won’t reopen Tuesday due to subzero temperatures

A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect for Monroe County, Livingston County, Lapeer County, St. Clair County, Wayne County, Macomb County, Washtenaw County, and Oakland County until noon Wednesday.

Monday’s high will struggle to reach 10 degrees, with wind chills remaining below zero all day. Heading into Tuesday and Wednesday, it will be even colder. Wind chills are forecasted to be between -15 and -15. Some areas could see this number dip as low as -25.

Though there is no hard and fast rule for canceling school, it’s likely schools will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.

A tricky snow and ice threat could unravel from Texas to at least the Carolinas during the first half of the week ahead. To say this forecast is uncertain is an understatement, but we’ll talk about what we know and what we don’t.

Here are some of the things that we do know going forward:

    • Moisture is likely to overspread the coldest air of the season. More on this setup at the end of this article.
    • The window for this interaction will open by late Monday night or early Tuesday and may continue as late as Wednesday.
    • Parts of the Gulf Coast and the Southeast could receive snow, ice or a mixture of the two during that window.
    • Heavy snow is currently not expected, but it could be enough to make travel hazardous.
    • For now, it is too early to show reliable snowfall or ice accretion forecasts given the amount of uncertainty in model guidance.
    • This forecast will change for the next couple of days. We encourage you to check back and not to stick with the forecast we’re showing here.

(Social Media And Snow Forecasting: What You Need To Know)

Here’s a day-by-day look at the upcoming winter storm and some additional caveats to the forecast:

    The Beginning: Monday Night’s Forecast

    • The first collision of cold and moisture will likely occur over Texas and Louisiana late Monday.
    • It is likely that there will be a zone of snow, sleet and freezing rain, especially near and south of Interstate 20 to the Gulf Coast.
    • The northward extent of this wintry weather is the most uncertain part of the forecast, so expect changes.
    imageimage
(While it is too soon to pinpoint precisely who will see what precipitation type, the green shadings depict where rain is expected. Areas that are shaded blue are expected to see snow. Purple-shaded locations may see either rain or snow. Areas in pink are expected to see sleet or freezing rain (ice).)

    Tuesday’s Forecast

    • If the moisture pushes far enough north, snow and ice will spread farther east along the Gulf Coast into southern parts of Mississippi and Alabama, the western Florida Panhandle, portions of Georgia and the coastal Carolinas.
    • For now, precipitation will fall as snow north of Interstate 10 and as rain or as a mixture along and south of Interstate 10.
    • Temperatures during the afternoon may warm above freezing, which would turn any snow in spots that push above 32 degrees into rain or a mixture of rain and snow.
    • Once again, the northern extent of that moisture, and thus snow and ice, is highly uncertain.
    imageimage
(While it is too soon to pinpoint precisely who will see what precipitation type, the green shadings depict where rain is expected. Areas that are shaded blue are expected to see snow. The End? Wednesday’s Forecast

    • The system might continue to wring out snow and ice from the Southeast into the coastal mid-Atlantic before lunchtime.
    • Rain is more likely across Florida from Tuesday night into early Wednesday.
    • Again, this is under the assumption that enough moisture overrides portions of the coastline.
    • Notice the question mark on “The End?”: Several computer models are suggesting that another burst of rain, snow or ice may sweep across the South and East later in the week.

Wintry Mess Via Common Tricky Setup

The configuration for this snow and ice threat is common as we slide through late January and into the second half of the winter.

Widespread cold air will have taken over the Lower 48 by early next week. Overnight temperatures will fall below freezing all the way to the Gulf Coast.

The trickery in this kind of forecast is often the moisture component: how much moisture makes it over that cold air and for how long.

We often see multiple rounds of moisture overspread the cold air, which means multiple batches of snow, ice or a mixture of the two. This frozen tango may last just a day or it can go on for a week or more. This first dance we’re discussing here may only be the first round. Stay tuned for any further threats in the days ahead.
