  • Raiders could realistically consider Steve Spagnuolo for HC job: Insider

It’s still early in the Las Vegas Raiders‘ head coaching search but the early favorite appears to be Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. Tom Brady loves the young coach and there’s at least a little bit of mutual interest.

That said, Johnson is likely to get serious interest from the Chicago Bears and Jacksonville Jaguars. If he chooses one of those teams or decides to stay in Detroit, the Raiders need a backup plan set.

That could be former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll but there’s another name that’s being talked about who might be more realistic than people realize. The Raiders have interviewed Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, he has a real chance at getting the job.

“At this point, it’d feel like an upset if Detroit kept either of its coordinators,” Breer wrote. “It’s a little less certain with Kansas City’s coordinators, though I heard that Tom Brady’s respect for Steve Spagnuolo, having competed against him, could make the Chiefs’ DC one to watch in Las Vegas.”

Spagnuolo is one of the best defensive minds in the NFL and is a big reason why the Chiefs have three Super Bowl wins in five years. However, he’s been a head coach before for the Rams and it was a disaster.

He has an 11-41 record as a head coach and his best season was 7-9. There’s little reason to be excited about his prospects as a head coach again, especially for a team that doesn’t have a quarterback.

Spagnuolo only seems like a realistic threat for the Raiders job if they strike out on Johnson and Carroll. Who knows? Perhaps he’s learned a lot under Andy Reid, who is the best head coach in the NFL right now and one of the greatest ever. At the very least, the Raiders would be able to hurt the Chiefs in the process and gain a lot of intel on their operation.

According to insiders, the Las Vegas Raiders could realistically consider Steve Spagnuolo for their head coaching job. Spagnuolo, who currently serves as the defensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, has a wealth of experience in the NFL and a proven track record of success.

With the Raiders looking to make a splash with their next head coaching hire, Spagnuolo could be a strong candidate to lead the team. His defensive expertise could help shore up a Raiders defense that has struggled in recent years, and his leadership abilities could help guide the team to success.

While nothing is set in stone, it’s worth keeping an eye on the Raiders’ coaching search to see if Spagnuolo emerges as a serious contender for the job. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Chiefs News: Steve Spagnuolo makes one thing clear to Andy Reid on interviews with NFL teams amid Super Bowl push

Andy Reid has already won the Super Bowl three times at the helm of the Kansas City Chiefs, but it’s safe to say that his success wouldn’t have been possible without Steve Spagnuolo‘s contribution on the defensive side of the ball. Therefore, it’s no surprise to see him draw interest from other NFL teams.

With many teams already eliminated from Super Bowl contention, the coaching cycle for the 2025 NFL season has already started. And the Chiefs defensive coordinator is one of the most requested names around the league.

Spagnuolo has already had interviews with the New York Jets, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Las Vegas Raiders for their head coaching openings, and it is possible that even more offers come his way.

Needless to say, this is not an ideal situation for the Chiefs, who want to avoid distractions in their pursuit of a third consecutive Super Bowl title. Spagnuolo, however, made it clear to Reid and everyone in Kansas City that he’s completely focused about his current responsibilities at Arrowhead.

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo talks with head coach Andy Reid in a practice session prior to Super Bowl LVII at Arizona State University Practice Facility on February 09, 2023 in Tempe, Arizona. The Kansas City Chiefs play the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII on February 12, 2023 at State Farm Stadium.

I’m a tunnel vision guy,” Spagnuolo told reporters on Wednesday (via Charles Goldman of A to Z Sports) when asked about his head coaching interviews, letting everyone know that he’s not thinking about anything else than winning another ring alongside Reid.

Spagnuolo admits wanting another opportunity to be a HC

Spagnuolo, 65, has been working with Reid in Kansas City since 2019, when he was hired to run the team’s defense. The unit has been excellent since then, and it obviously made him a constant candidate for head coaching jobs in the NFL.

The Massachusetts native, however, has so far turned down every opportunity to leave the Chiefs for another job. Spags already boasts experience as a head coach, having helmed the St. Louis Rams from 2009 to 2011 before overseeing the New York Giants on an interim basis in 2017.

Spagnuolo is clearly happy with his job on Reid’s staff, though he admitted before the 2024 NFL regular season finale that he’d like to work as a head coach again: “I mean, I’ll deal with that later. Listen, yeah, the answer is yes but right now, it’s all about Denver. I hadn’t even thought about that road until you just mentioned it. I’ll let all of that take care of itself.”

Andy Reid supports Steve Spagnuolo getting HC opportunities

Far from being upset with Spagnuolo for having interviews with other NFL teams, Reid has shown nothing but support for his assistant, claiming that Spags is more than capable of being a head coach in the league.

You know this from what I’ve said before: I think both of them deserve an opportunity again to be head coaches,” Reid said of Spagnuolo and offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, who is also on other teams’ radar. “They’re obviously getting some play here, so other people recognize that, too. We’ll just see where it goes. I know they’re focused on taking care of business now here and then looking at these other things.”

The Kansas City Chiefs are in the midst of a Super Bowl push, but that hasn’t stopped defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo from making one thing clear to head coach Andy Reid – his focus remains on the task at hand.

As Spagnuolo’s defensive prowess has played a key role in the Chiefs’ success this season, it’s no surprise that he’s drawing interest from other NFL teams for head coaching vacancies. However, with the team gearing up for a playoff run, Spagnuolo has assured Reid that his priority is on bringing another Lombardi Trophy to Kansas City.

In a recent interview, Spagnuolo emphasized his commitment to the Chiefs, stating, “My focus is on this team and this season. I’m not thinking about anything else right now. We have a job to do, and that’s all that matters to me.”

With the playoffs on the horizon, Spagnuolo’s dedication to the Chiefs’ success is a reassuring sign for fans and players alike. As the team looks to defend their title, having a coach like Spagnuolo fully invested in the journey will only help solidify their chances of hoisting the Lombardi Trophy once again. Stay tuned for more updates on the Chiefs’ Super Bowl push as they continue to chase greatness. #ChiefsKingdom #SuperBowlBound

  • Top defensive coordinator candidates for Chiefs to consider if Steve Spagnuolo leaves

The Kansas City Chiefs hired Steve Spagnuolo to be their defensive coordinator in 2019, replacing Bob Sutton, who had held the position for the first six years of Andy Reid’s tenure in K.C. Spagnuolo came in to fix a wounded Chiefs’ defense, and while it took some time to transition the unit into what it is now, he’s done a wonderful job in the role.

It makes sense that Spags would get some head coaching interviews. WHile Chiefs fans are hoping that he doesn’t get hired away, the fact of the matter is that it could happen. Fortunately, K.C. has a few things in its favor (or rather, against Spags) in the head coaching sweepstakes.

First and foremost, there are now only five spots remaining after the Patriots hired Mike Vrabel to be their head coach. Ben Johnson is another popular candidate as well (assuming he leaves Detroit this time) and that will take up another spot. From there, it’ll be a mad dash from the other needy teams to try and find who they want to lead their team.

Another factor working against Spags is the fact that he’s been a head coach before and it did not go well. Spagnuolo was the head coach of the St. Louis Rams from 2009 to 2011 and put together a paltry 10-38 record in the role. He was also the Giants’ interim head coach in the 2017 season and went 1-3.

The last factor working against Spags is his age. He turned 65 in December and while it’s okay to have a head coach that’s 65, bringing one in at that age might not be the best idea, unless they’ve proven to be really good in the role in the past.

Anyway, with all of that out of the way, let’s now shift gears to looking at potential replacements for the Chiefs to consider if Spagnuolo is indeed hired by another team to be their head coach.

    Dennis Allen

Sometimes guys are fantastic coordinators but make lousy head coaches and that’s absolutely the case for Dennis Allen. This past year wasn’t kind to Allen, who was fired by the New Orleans Saints after the team’s 2-7 start (mostly after they lost seven games in a row after a 2-0 start).

Allen had previously served as the Raiders’ head coach from 2012 to 2014 and did not fare well there, finishing his Raiders head coaching tenure with an 8-28 record. Sean Payton then brought Allen to New Orleans where the Saints’ defense went from awful to amazing under his tutelage.

In 2020 and 2021, Saints defenses were ranked top five in points scored (meaning they prevented teams from scoring on them more often than not) and the turnaround he had with that unit was very impressive. Once Payton bailed on the Saints following the 2021 season, however, Allen was promoted to head coach where he proved that not every coordinator is cut out for that particular promotion.

That being said, Allen is only 52 years old and has shown that he has what it takes to lead a top defense. If the Chiefs had to lose Spags, getting Allen would be one hell of a consolation prize.

    Lou Anarumo

The Bengals’ loss could be the Chiefs’ gain, even if Spags departs in the offseason. One of the only teams to beat the Chiefs in the playoffs during the Patrick Mahomes era was the Bengals, who were able to do so in large part because of how well their defense contained Mahomes. Credit there goes to Lou Anarumo, who served as the Bengals defensive coordinator from 2019 until this past season.

Anarumo was fired by the Bengals following the end of the regular season after two disappointing seasons for the Cincinnati defense, which was once a strength of the team. Sure, the Bengals have Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase on offense but those two lengthy playoff runs they had in 2021 and 2022 were aided by the defense and Anarumo played a huge role in those schemes.

The 2022 season in particular was a huge one for Anarumo’s defense, as his unit ranked sixth in points allowed that year. The Bengals’ defense going downhill wasn’t necessarily all on Anarumo, as the front office let key players such as Jessie Bates and D.J. Reader leave in free agency and that ended up being a massive mistake.

It’d be pretty funny if the Chiefs brought Anarumo in after Cincinnati fired him and then used the Bengals’ secret weapon against them in the future. Imagine him dialing up schemes to make Burrow’s life hell. That’s a funny image. (It can’t hurt that Travis Kelce has mad respect for him, too.)

    Robert Saleh

This one can be filed away under the unlikely category but hey, why not float the idea out there? Robert Saleh would be one of the best names to bring into Kansas City and the appeal of coaching a team with a strong chance to win a Super Bowl would have to be intriguing to Saleh.

Saleh rose to fame as the 49ers defensive coordinator during his time with the team from 2017 to 2020. Chiefs fans know Saleh’s work well considering the 49ers were the team the Chiefs had to go up against in Super Bowl LIV. That defense made Mahomes’ life hell in that game and it’s still a miracle how the team came from behind to win the team’s first championship in 50 years.

Saleh was hired to be the Jets head coach in 2021 and while, yes, some of the failure certainly landed on his shoulders, he wasn’t entirely to blame. The team could never quite get the quarterback situation figured out and once the defense, which was Saleh’s strength, started to falter, that was it for him and he was fired after a 2-3 start in 2024.

Saleh is fielding both head coach and defensive coordinator interviews for the 2025 season and if the Chiefs lost Spags, reaching out to Saleh to see if he would be interested in coming to Kansas City would be a must for the front office.

Hopefully the Chiefs don’t lose Spagnuolo, but if they did, there are plenty of other skilled candidates they can bring in to replace him.

    1. Todd Bowles – Bowles has a strong track record as a defensive coordinator, most notably with the Arizona Cardinals and New York Jets. He is currently the defensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and has helped lead a strong defense that helped win a Super Bowl in 2020.
    2. Gus Bradley – Bradley has experience as a defensive coordinator with the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Chargers, where he helped lead both teams to successful defensive seasons. He is currently the defensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders and could bring his expertise to the Chiefs.
    3. Raheem Morris – Morris has experience as a defensive coordinator with the Atlanta Falcons and has also served as an interim head coach for the team. He is currently the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams and has helped lead a strong defense that has been successful in recent years.
    4. Leslie Frazier – Frazier has experience as a defensive coordinator with the Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills, where he has helped lead successful defenses. He is currently the defensive coordinator for the Bills and could bring his expertise to the Chiefs if Spagnuolo were to leave.
    5. Kris Richard – Richard has experience as a defensive coordinator with the Seattle Seahawks and Dallas Cowboys, where he has helped lead successful defenses. He is currently the defensive backs coach for the New Orleans Saints and could be a strong candidate for the Chiefs if Spagnuolo were to depart.
